Courtenay debates smart metres Renée Andor Black Press COURTENAY — Courtenay council wants to hear from BC Hydro before deciding whether to request a temporary prohibition of smart meters from the province.

The council chambers at city hall were packed last week as council heard from residents opposed to BC Hydro’s smart meters.

The delegation urged council to ask for a moratorium on the mandatory installation of BC Hydro’s wireless smart meters until independent research on the meters is completed. BC Hydro plans to install smart meters in the Comox Valley over the summer.

Coun. Starr Winchester made a motion to invite a BC Hydro representative to a future council meeting to hear the company’s reasons for installation.

“I think in order for us to make an informed decision we have to hear both sides of the equation,” said Winchester.

Council voted in favour of the motion.

Trudy Thompson, one of three delegation speakers, said she understands council’s desire to hear from BC Hydro before making a decision.

“I understand that they need to talk to BC Hydro, but BC Hydro is one-sided and one-sided only and that is to push forward this smart meter program no matter what the cost to the public, any health effects, any concerns, and I mean it’s costing us dearly, not just with our money, but with our lives and our security,” said Thompson.

Some of the concerns raised were: increased cost, threatened security to residents’ privacy and health risks.

She also pointed out the new meters are not CSA approved.

David Kirk, who also spoke against smart meters, said he asked BC Hydro not to install a smart meter on his property.

“BC Hydro told me that they would not be installing a hydro meter on my property, that it was noted, but if I refused again, that my hydro service would be denied to

The birds are singing, the bugs are buzzing and the shrubs are blooming at Baikie Island nature reserve this spring.

“There’s no better time to stroll through Baikie Island and nearby Raven Park to explore the Campbell River estuary environment,” says Ross Milnthorp, the City’s general manager of parks, recreation and culture. “This Baikie Island restoration has transformed a former industrial hub into an exquisite and tranquil natural space,” Milnthorp says. “The change in the estuary is breathtaking, and people will be able to enjoy this for years to come.”

type of habitat and the plants and animals that live there. Often rare or endangered species are found on nature reserves. The Baikie Island Nature Reserve protects a significant portion of the Campbell River Estuary, an extremely important and productive area for salmon, waterfowl, migratory and shore birds, mammals and native plants.

Extensive restoration measures have transformed this onceindustrialized area back to a natural setting in the estuary.

Over the past year, the City of Campbell River implemented the final phase of the Baikie Island Restoration project to re-establish the riparian forest zone in

the central area of the island.

Invasive plant species, industrial debris and degraded soils were removed, topsoil was spread and contoured, large woody debris was placed in piles or erected as snags for habitat, two wetted areas were created, a short loop trail was constructed, and more than 5,000 native plants and trees were installed.

Greenways Land Trust provided a planting crew.

This phase of the project is expected to be completed over the next few years, at a cost of up to $400,000 once all invasive plants are removed, native plants established and park signs and furniture are in place. Funding

was provided by the federal government’s Community Works Fund, BC Hydro Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, Tree Canada and the City’s Parks Parcel Tax. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) purchased Baikie Island in 2000 thanks to generous donors and wide-reaching community support.

In 2001, the NCC transferred ownership of the property to the City of Campbell River, under a conservation covenant to protect and manage the property as Baikie Island Nature Reserve.

BC Parks programs are big on families From its hugely popular park passports to its new ‘textto- donate to kids programs,’ BC Parks is big on families, Environment Minister Terry Lake said.

While BC Parks has long benefitted from donations, its new mobile-giving program signals a move into the 21st century and donating has never been easier.

With the view to nurturing and expanding kids’ appreciation and understanding of the natural world, BC Parks is introducing the text to donate program to contribute funds to new kids programs.

All potential donors need to do is text “BCPARKS” to 45678 to donate $5 dollars.

The donation will be added to their next cellphone bill and 100 per cent of every donation ($5 dollars

for each text with a monthly limit of six texts) will be spent on children’s programs.

For example, Learn to Fish, sponsored by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, is a children’s program currently offered in some provincial parks.

Information about both text-to-donate and Learn to Fish and lots more is available in BC Parks passports.

Kids of all ages can also have some fun with the passports.

BC Parks introduced the successful program for the first time last year.

It’s geared towards families but everyone can join in the adventure. Collect six stamps or stickers and win a prize - it’s that easy.

Passports are free, good for two years, and can be picked up at any visitor centre in B.C. and most

provincial parks.

Passport holders can choose from more than 200 parks or visitor centres provincewide.

The idea is to collect six stamps from one or more provincial parks during 2012 and earn a coveted, collectible Jerry the Moose pin, and earn another, different pin, the following year.

Also, for every six unique Visitor Centre stickers, the reward is an environmentally friendly water bottle.

Along with the chance to collect stamps and stickers to win awards, the passport includes advice on trip planning and Visitor Centre coupons.

Planning a picnic, day hike or camping trip?

Don’t forget - last year the province eliminated parking fees in all provincial parks to help make them

more accessible.

Yorke Island is a tiny island in the Johnstone Straits, six kilometres northeast of Kelsey Bay (Sayward area), that was chosen as a coastal defence site to ward off a potential Japanese attack during the Second World War. This unique look at the history of the Yorke Island fort includes more than 100 photos, both archival and modern, and stories from local residents living in Kelsey Bay and on Hardwicke Island when the fort was being built.
