n information picket set up by striking CP Rail workers near Deltaport Wednesday (May 23) did not disrupt train traffic to and from the facility.

But that was okay with the small group of employees—locomotive engineers and conductors—who were content to get their message out about why they, and their fellow workers across the country, were off the job.

At the top of their list of concerns is what they say is the company's move to reduce pension income by as much as 40 per cent.

It's especially significant to long-time employees such as Marvin Hultman, a locomotive engineer who has spent the past 31 years with the rail line.

"The main thing is the pension," Hultman said. "We could be looking at pension rollbacks up to 40 per cent from what I understand."

"The pension is something we work for to carry us through in our later years," said Andrew Vandenberg who is a conductor on freight trains and has been with CP Rail for 28 years. "We work for the wage and look forward to the pension for quality of life at

the end of it all. And the union has worked long and hard to see that the workers' rights are upheld and that we get a good pension.

"Now, the company wants to claw that back and take it away from us. And that's just not right."

Vandenberg added this is the second time in his career he has been involved with job action—the other time he and his colleagues were legislated back to work before they had a chance to walk the picket line.

"This is actually the first time I have been on a strike," he said, adding he hopes the union and CP Rail can come to a solution and get things back on the rails. "We are all working men here, and that's what we want to do."

Federal Labour Minister Lisa Raitt said in Ottawa that the government is prepared to introduce back-to-work legislation if the two sides cannot reach a deal, aware that a prolonged work stoppage could cost the national economy an estimated $540 million a week.

As they sat under sunny skies in fold-up chairs and displayed strike signs fixed to their vehicles by the side of the road along the western end of 27B Ave.—a distance from the rail tracks, but across the asphalt from CP Rail's area office—the striking rail workers didn't think that on Wednesday their demonstration had impacted traffic at Deltaport.

"I don't think we're really stopping anything here today," Hultman said. "We've set up our picket, mostly for information purposes. A couple of people have stopped and asked. But it's just us who is not working."

Denis Horgan, Vice President and General Manager at Westshore Terminals, which handles coal at the Roberts Bank facility, said the only difference in operations Wednesday was that CP trains were not being unloaded.

CP Rail traffic accounts for just over half of Westshore Terminal's traffic.

During an average day two to three CP trains would unload about 40,000 tons of coal at the terminal. On Wednesday Westshore was just dealing with coal traffic from BNSF Railway and CN Rail. editor@southdeltaleader.com

A symbol of acceptance, achievement and admiration through sport will be making its way through Delta early next month.

It's the Law Enforcement Torch Run, an innovative initiative powered by dedicated law enforcement personnel around the world in support of Special Olympics athletes.

The Corporation of Delta is one of 30 dedicated communities across the province participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run that helps raise awareness for Special Olympics athletes and programs in B.C. Law enforcement officials, Special Olympics athletes and members of the community will be running through Ladner on June 8.

The run will commence at Ladner Lions Park at 3 p.m. and will end at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the Delta Police Department (4455 Clarence Taylor Crescent) where participants can enjoy a wrap up barbecue.

Barbecue season With the warm summer weather hopefully just around the corner what better way to get outside and enjoy things than at a barbecue? And the Tsawwassen Shrine Club kicks off the outdoor eating season next Sunday (June 3) with their 43rd annual Salmon Barbecue.

Last year, the service group served up around 1,800 meals at Ladner's Harbour Park.

Proceeds go towards Delta Hospital and the Shriner Care Cruiser Program which transports physically challenged children and their parents to BC Children's Hospital, as well as other medical facilities in B.C. and Oregon.

Delta Hospital Foundation staff and a small army of volunteers proved spare change can quickly add up as they counted and rolled $500 in pennies Thursday (May 17).

The effort was part of the foundation’s Every Penny Counts campaign that is asking the public to send in their pennies—which will soon be out of circulation—to help purchase a Triple Lumen IV Pump.

The pump is designed to administer up to three medications simultaneously to patients in the event that such treatment is required.

Cindy Tudge from the Ladner branch of Envision Financial was on hand along with Grade 10 finance class students

from Delta Secondary school to help count the coins. She said the campaign’s goal is to collect one million pennies.

That translates into $10,000.

And judging by the response from the community since the campaign kicked off several weeks ago, the coins are starting to add up.

In addition to helping acquire a needed piece of equipment for the hospital, the campaign is a handy way of getting rid of those old copper coins.

Future penny counting and rolling sessions are planned for the future as the Every Penny Counts campaign runs until September.

Event commemorates Man in Motion World Tour Parmar who was selected to be the one to end the Delta portion of the event at municipal hall.

Parmar, a Grade 12 student at Sands Secondary school told the crowd she was taking part in memory of her mother who died last year of cancer.

Mom-run business takes interdisciplinary approach to elementary school learning

s a mother of two elementaryaged daughters, Tsawwassen’s Tami Oudendijk knows of the challenges associated with organizing class field trips.

She says it’s rare for schools to hire costly yellow buses these days, and it can be difficult to round up enough volunteer parent drivers. Then there’s admission fees and travel time. On more than one occasion, Oudendijk has volunteered to chauffeur the 45-minute trip from Tsawwassen to the Vancouver Aquarium.

Christine “While the Lyon program is good, there was more time commuting back and forth than you actually spent doing the program that you were at,” she says.

Recognizing these challenges, Oudendijk joined forces with two other moms—her sister Shauna Farrell and their long-time mutual friend Mira Chan—to develop a program that allows kids to enjoy the change of pace and educational outcomes of a field trip without ever leaving the classroom.

The trio created Field-Trip-In-A-Box, a one-and-a-half hour theme-based workshop that broaches a range of subjects. The cost is approximately $6-10 per child.

“We looked at the B.C. curriculum and said, well, how can you combine social studies and math and language so they’re not all compartmentalized subjects?” Oudendijk says.

She, Farrell and Chan recently held their first “field trip” at South Park Elementary school in Tsawwassen.

“We just show up and do this really

theme-based, integrated program that’s totally based on the B.C. curriculum,” Oudendijk says.

The workshop they led at South Park was themed around water. Students learned about the water cycle, the weather, the science of water and social responsibility.

Oudendijk said the kids really enjoyed what they dubbed “the survivor game” in which the class is divided into groups and placed in different imaginary environmental settings.

“They’re given a certain number of natural resources and they also have to invent some tools given their physical location,” Oudendijk says. “They have to imagine what it would be like in the area where they lived and then come to us with an invention.”

For example, the coastal-dwelling group might create a tool out of a stick and a shell and attempt to trade their fish for another group’s clean drinking water.

“So they really have to use critical thinking and teamwork and all that kind of stuff to achieve what they need by the end of the game.”

In addition to academic subjects such as science and language, students are also encouraged to use “soft skills” like collaboration, critical thinking and communication.

Oudendijk says this school year has been a difficult launch time because of the ongoing teachers’ job action, but she hopes to start delivering the Field-TripIn-A-Box program in more classrooms.

“What we’re really excited about is being part of the change that’s happening in education,” she says, explaining many educators are shifting towards a more interdisciplinary approach to learning.

Ladner pair cook up culinary awards Chef and apprentice bag medals at Korean competition PHILIP RAPHAEL EDITOR

Cooking talent from Ladner’s renowned La Belle Auberge proved to be a hit with the judges at a recent international competition in Daejeon, South Korea.

Chef Tobias MacDonald and apprentice Jasper Cruickshank brought home medals from a pair of events.

MacDonald, a longtime competitor in culinary challenges, earned a bronze at the WACS ( World Association of Chefs Societies) Global Chef competition, while Cruickshank was rewarded with a gold at the Restaurant of Provinces team

event for young chefs.

Eight weeks prior to the competition the chefs in MacDonald’s event were given a line up of ingredients they had to use during the actual event.

For MacDonald that first meant practising his take on a vegetarian appetizer that featured mushrooms.

“The second course was a Norwegian halibut,” he said, adding the main course then used an Australian wagyu beef—Kobe beef which is a very upscale, well marbled beef product.

MacDonald used a wagyu strip loin and brisket. And to finish, the dessert had to use strawberries.

Little House president receives Hansen medal Stimson recognized for re-establishing Tsawwassen facility To help celebrate the achievements of Rick Hansen, who embarked on a global tour on his wheelchair 25 years ago, members in the community who have also achieved great success are being honoured.

And one of them is Jim Stimson, president of the Little House Society.

Delta-South independent MLA Vicki Huntington recently presented

Stimson with the medal for his leadership to rebuild the Tsawwassen facility that is a meeting place for addiction and related recovery groups.

Destroyed by an arson fire in 2009, Stimson spearheaded the drive to raise the $330,000 needed to complete a modern multi-purpose facility for recovery and other community groups that needed room for

training, meetings and therapeutic uses.

Over the past year not only has the society raised close to all the money required, but numerous businesses have also stepped forward to donate their materials and skills to finish a beautiful, firstclass facility.

“Jim Stimson has brilliantly led a group of dedicated citizens along

a path of magnificent community accomplishment. The Little House has become a beacon of support to individuals struggling with the impacts of addictions of all kinds. Delta is grateful for the leadership Jim and his board have shown and for the difference they are already making in our home town,” Huntington said.

Good money sense It's all about the customer for financial advisor Dean Meloni Look around financial advisor Dean Meloni's office and it quickly becomes clear what matters most to him.

Photos of his wife and their four-and-a-half-month-old daughter decorate his shelves and computer screen. And hanging on the walls, framed black-and-white pictures chronicling the history of Edward Jones financial services firm serve as a constant reminder of the company's principles and investment philosophy.

Meloni has worked in the financial services industry since 1997 and took over the Tsawwassen branch of Edward Jones (5682 12th Ave.) just over a year ago. He says he learned quickly that being a successful financial advisor means putting the customer first.

"You can't truly help people in this industry if you're motivated by money," he says. "If you wake up every day and you look at yourself in the mirror and you say, 'I'm going to be successful because I help people,' that's when

it works."

Meloni has clients across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley and says he takes a personal approach tailored to the needs of each individual or company.

"People come to me and they have a need for solid, sound advice that is going to help them get towards their goal," he says.

For 2012 and 2013, Meloni says he is focusing on education. He and a group of other professionals in the community plan to reach out and teach people about everything from retirement planning to wills to home insurance.

Before he got into finance, Meloni worked as a short order cook and he still knows his way around the kitchen.

This week, he shares a recipe for authentic Italian tiramisu.

Tiramisu INGREDIENTS 6 cups strong coffee or espresso (warm) 8 omega-3 eggs (separated) 1 cup sugar 1 1/2 cups Mascarpone cream cheese (Philadelphia or no name is fine) 1 cup whipping cream

DIRECTIONS Using an electric hand mixer beat egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar on medium/high for 2 minutes, or until thickened. Blend in cream cheese and continue mixing until smooth.

Beat egg whites on high speed until stiff peaks appear (about 5 minutes) Add 2 tbsp. of sugar to whipping cream and beat until stiff. Gently fold egg whites into whipping cream and

2 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 pinch orange zest Sprinkle of hot chocolate powder or cocoa 1 package lady finger biscuits

then fold mixture into egg yolk/cream cheese mixture.

Add vanilla, orange zest, cinnamon and nutmeg, folding continuously.

Combine espresso with remaining sugar and stir until dissolved. Very quickly and gently dip the lady finger biscuits into the sweetened coffee and lay in rows in an 8×12 no-stick metal baking pan, about 2 inches deep. Be very careful not to soak the cookies,

Once you have completed one layer spoon a generous amount of the cream cheese mixture (maybe a little less than half) over the biscuits and distribute evenly. Sprinkle with cocoa. Needless to say, my Facebook page was plastered with anticonservation links and articles (and still is, mind you). And again, needless to say, I was quite depressed when Jack Layton's group was defeated (and even more so when he passed away).

I'll get to the point. The point is I want to encourage average citizens like myself to be informed, to do research and understand what is going on in the federal government.

The government is pushing to pass a law, Bill C-38, which will have unmeasurable impacts on our environmental protection laws.

Our coastline is a beautiful, sensitive area and in case you haven’t heard our oceans are in

jeopardy, too. There are now five ocean areas of floating garbage (the one in the Pacific is over twice the size of Texas), large mammals and small micro organisms are experiencing changes in their physical chemistry due to increased acidification, warming, chemical leaching and so on.

This is not the time to sit idly by, or, as our government is doing, plug our ears and hum and march in the direction of obvious environmental destruction.

We want back the Canada that loved and valued our wilderness and sought to protect it for our generations to come.

40 years back championed developers' land-use-contracts— no building permits granted without sewers, roads, curbs, sidewalks, underground wiring, ornamental lighting mapped out in the blueprints, as well as school / park-purchase capital in the bank up front. Offsets in-hand for predictable costs that lurk in the bush.

its ( Tsawwassen) Mills and (Tsawwassen) Commons grand plans, these infrastructure monies will be relative chump-change for them to secure too.

Plenty of reasons to celebrate locally You have to marvel at the way South Deltans like to celebrate in their own backyard.

Whether it's fun in the sun at May Days, the Ladner Village Market, Tsawwassen's Sunfest or the Outdoor Movie Nights at Diefenbaker Park and the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, the community comes out in pretty decent numbers to enjoy themselves locally.

With the 116th annual May Days ready to kick off this Friday afternoon—that's when the rides get rolling at Memorial Park—you get a sense that a history of attending community gatherings is well entrenched here.

It's like saying "offer it and they will come."

But events of these sorts don't just happen by themselves. They require an awful lot of effort to plan and stage. And that usually means a lot of heavy lifting many months in advance by groups of dedicated organizers who volunteer their time to ensure the next great community bash in Ladner or Tsawwassen goes off with as few hitches as possible.

And it's that commitment by your friends and neighbours that is very much a reason to celebrate, too.

Those volunteers make their contributions with little or no fanfare. They agonize over details many of us will never even notice.

They often don't have the opportunity to fully enjoy their event in the way the rest of the public does.

And they are the frequently overlooked component of what makes a good event great.

That by itself should be reason enough for the public to get out and attend all that South Delta has to offer—whether it's spring, summer, fall or winter being celebrated.

And when you do it might just be an idea to mention to one of those volunteers helping direct traffic, setting up a tent, or making sure the parade floats make it around a corner safely that they are doing a great job—like always.

Ladner Pioneer May Days will be marking its 116th annual celebration starting this Friday (May 25) afternoon and stretching to Sunday.

A s o n e o f Br i t i s h Columbia's oldest free family fairs, what's its secret to such longevity?

Ladner May Days cochair Jackey Zellweger says much of the success is owed to a sense of tradition.

"I think it's just history," Zellweger said.

"It's been going on so long and people come and bring their kids.

And when they grow up they bring their kids.

It's just a tradition that gets passed on."

"I also think it brings a lot of people back to their childhood," says Sarah Gallop, the event's other co-chair.

"It's been around forever. And the fact it's so close to the high school means pretty much everyone who's lived in Ladner went there and probably remembers it from when they were a kid."

And it's not just folks from in and around South Delta making their way to Ladner.

Plenty come from much further afield, too.

"I know some who live in Maple Ridge who come out for the parade and the whole experience because that's part of their growing up," Zellweger said.

"Also, there's not really anything else like it out here," added Gallop. "People like the community aspect of it, too, and the fact that people who have m a y b e e v e n m ov e d away come back. It's like a reunion. You see people who you went to high school with, or grew up with. And even if you don't live locally you pretty much know they are going to be there. It's one of those reconnection points."

Craft fair has something for everyone at Memorial Park A highlight of the annual Ladner Pioneer May Days, the craft fair is back in business this year with between 25 and 30 vendors selling everything from naturally scented soaps and candles to handmade bags, wallets, jewelry and clothing. “There’s something for everyone’s taste and price range,� says May Days volunteer Jennifer Middleton, who has coordinated the annual showing of crafters and artisans for the past 15 years.

Vendors hail from the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley, as well as from Ladner and Tsawwassen, which makes buying locally pretty easy, says Middleton.

Back by popular demand, the Dipsy Doodle candies and gag gifts will be available once again, and Middleton is also proud to have Michael, “The Hat Guy� back for 2012.

A farmer's plight Ladner's Trevor Harris doesn't see a future in crop growing in Delta

It's a hot topic of conversation these days—and one Ladner grower Trevor Harris says he's sick and tired of hearing about.

The fifth generation farmer runs Crest Grove Farms where he grows more than 500 acres of potatoes, peas and beans. He's watched the landscape around him change dramatically over the years and doesn't have a rosy outlook when it comes to the future of crop farming in Delta.

"Times change," he says, looking out the window of his second-floor office where the afternoon traffic is beginning to descend on the Massey tunnel. "We're getting so crammed here, I don't see a future in growing crops here."

Harris says the local soil and climate are not as ideal as some make it out to be. Meanwhile, he's facing increasingly tough foreign competition.

While defenders of agriculture argue preserving local farmland is vital for long-term food security, Harris says it's a non-issue because of increasing yields produced in the United States and overseas.

"The need to have this (land) for food security is just a joke," he says.

Frustrated, Harris chose not to attend a public information meeting on Tuesday evening (May 22) hosted by Delta-South MLA Vicki Huntington on the topic of industrial development on agricultural lands.

Finding a balance On Tuesday, dozens gathered at the South Delta Secondary school theatre to learn more about information released last month

by Huntington's office which revealed an

industrial development company has secretly optioned nearly 600 acres of Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) farmland near Deltaport, with plans to build an intermodal yard and logistics park for the port.

Huntington said she is trying to convince the province and Port Metro Vancouver that industry is not an appropriate use of the land. She said it provides food security for the region and sustenance for birds that migrate along the Pacific migratory bird flyway.

"I would stand up and defend the need for a healthy active port, but what I want to find is the balance that we know needs to take place in terms of what land that port accesses for economic purposes," she told the audience.

She said the community has values beyond industrial development and its economic advantages; there is also quality of life, the future of agriculture, and the environment.

"We have to take these other values into account and we have to decide where the appropriate land uses are for our future economic development."

Huntington was joined by guest speakers, including Dr. Art Bomke, a soil expert and associate professor emeritus in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC. "Delta farms contribute to local food security and they provide ecological services that are critical," Bomke said. "My strong feeling is that land-based farmers and farmers in Delta are worth saving."

Bomke said Delta has productive soil and a Class 1 climate, a long frost-free period, more sunshine hours than the Fraser Valley and moderate temperatures.

"The moral of the story is good land with good climate is a precious resource, and that's particularly true in Canada," he concluded.

Farming is a business While Bomke describes Delta's soil as some of the finest in the country, Harris doesn't think it's all it's cracked up to be.

"It's a heavy clay, it's at sea level so it floods, and you've got to factor in the climate we have," he says. "The amount of heat units we get in the summer is not very many."

He says he faces stiff competition in Eastern Washington where there is sandier soil, double the heat units, and farms produce double the yield.

When it comes to local food security, Harris says as long as you have money you can buy food—it's already coming in from all over the world.

Crest Grove Farms exports 70 to 80 per cent of everything it grows. Still, Harris was left with a 400-ton potato surplus last year for

which he said there was no market.

He says ALR designation restricts what farmers can do with their land, but there is no accompanying legislation to force consumers to buy what he grows.

"They can buy food from anywhere in the world," Harris says.

"We keep asking them (the government) to match the level of support that Europe and the U.S. have for their growers and create a level playing field as we are competing in a global market," he says.

But the level of support always falls short, he says.

"The original intent of the ALR is obvious now; it was to manipulate and devalue the land so it could be bought cheaper in the future by the province for roads and the port and other uses."

South Delta Leader Friday, May 25, 25, 2012 2012 Environmental concern Tsawwassen resident, author and South Delta Leader columnist Anne Murray spoke on Tuesday evening about the environmental benefits of preserving the agricultural land around Deltaport.

"This is the most critical area on the West Coast of Canada for shorebirds, so it's a pity that so many of the people that run our province and run our country do not understand that," she said.

She added that the Fraser River delta is also the most important place on the Canadian coast for wintering waterfowl.

"All of these waterfowl depend on agricultural fields at some stage of their migration and wintering life," she says, explaining Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust provides funding to help farmers plant cover crops and resist damage by feathered species.

If birds can't stop here, Murray says they will be forced to move onto the next feeding area. But with pit stops becoming fewer and further between, she says birds will either die off or become easy prey in their weakened state.

"All across the world shorebird numbers are declining because all too many of their habitats where they stop have been destroyed by humans who don't realize what is happening," she said.

"The rural landscape provides all sorts of good habitat for all sorts of species," she added, explaining several species at risk also use Delta's farmland.

While there are a number of environmental designations in South Delta, Murray said most of them do not carry any legal strength.

Rounding out the speakers list was Gordon Price, director of the City Program at SFU and an authority on land use planning.

Price said ports are "exponential growth machines" and advised the audience that if

"We cannot simply step back and say, 'I'm here to defend the birds, or the soils, or my quality of life—too bad about you.'

That doesn't work in planning and it doesn't work politically," he said.

He said residents instead need to an have honest, open dialogue with port officials and be willing to negotiate.

"You are on the front line," he told the audience. "What happens on those lands just a few kilometres over there is going to say much about who we are as a people."

Accepting change Harris points out his office window to the spot where he first started driving a Ford 3000 tractor when he was just six-years-old.

"You're kind of born into it, and then it becomes a part of you," he says of the business. "That's why people are emotional about their farms. You become a part of the land when you're a grower your whole life."

He pulls a framed black-and-white photo off his office wall that shows his grandfather's farm and house. It was a dairy operation before his father switched over to crops in the '60s. There was no Delta Town & Country Inn, no highways criss-crossing the property, and no traffic.

Harris says he has learned to accept change and predicts there is a lot more on the horizon.

"The future I see, this is going to be a port town because it already is," he says.

Harris has a daughter and nephews, but he doubts they will be interested in taking over the farm. And he's not sure he would steer them in that direction either.

"I would direct them to get a government job with a pension," he says. reporter@southdeltaleader.com

The Phoenix ready to take wing

Unique combination of dance, live painting and music to take the stage at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre Los Gitanos Flamenco Dance Company will be presenting The Phoenix, Flamenco Fire at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre on June 1-3 which is being billed as an explosive blend of dance, live painting and music.

Organizers say the show is unlike anything produced before in Tsawwassen.

“I am very excited to have partnered this year with so many talented artists in our community which allowed us to fuse our seemingly different styles into one incredible performance,” said Bev Mantovani, owner and choreographer of Los Gitanos Spanish School of Dance in Tsawwassen.

“This show allowed the perfect opportunity to combine our different talents into one unique flamenco presentation.

You won’t even find this in Spain.”

The audience will witness the development of live painting as it is created to the sounds of Spanish guitar, soulful songs, rhythmic palmas and castanets, intricate zapateo (footwork), compelling piano and violin,

and the warmth of percussion.

“Garett Campbell-Wilson is a young, curious and extremely talented (Tsawwassen) artist who loves to find ways to progressively take his work to a new level,” Mantovani said. “He has tried live painting before to violin music, but not to flamenco dance; he instantly accepted the challenge.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with him and I can’t wait to see what he will develop during our performance.”

One of the songs at the performance called Poeta by Spanish flamenco composer Vicente Amigo has been recorded by the students of the Delta Community Music School led by Stephen Robb.

The second part of the song will be played live

by Robb and one of the violinists at the music school.

The performances run June 1 and 2 starting at 7 p.m. and June 3 at 3 p.m.

No 'flagging' fortunes here Non-tackle form of football on the rise with the Rams The South Delta Rams flag football program is certainly proving the old adage that "nothing succeeds like success."

That's because next month the club will be sending five of its seven teams to the 2012 Flag Football Provincial Championships in Kelowna.

Plus, the flag form of the sport is enjoying a surge in popularity with enrolment soaring this season.

For example, at the U14 level the Rams had one team with nine players on it last year.

This year, there are three teams with a total of 33 players.

"It's totally exploded," said Brent Calvert, a junior bantam coach with the Rams, adding the transfer of the program's management from NFL Canada to local football associations is part of the reason.

"This is the first year where the Vancouver Mainland Football League has taken over, now teams are based on their local affiliations.

And it's totally taken off as an easier way to get kids into football without all the contact that comes in tackle (football). They try it out and realize there's room and space for all body types," Calvert said. "You don't have to be a big hulking guy to play tackle."

Growth has also been experienced across the league with a jump from 13 teams at the U14 level to 25 this season.

"Right through the whole Lower Mainland and the (Fraser) valley

there's been growth," Calvert said.

"I think we're catching a lot of kids at that U14 age level who are in transition—kids who may not have made the gold level team in soccer, or are playing house instead of rep in hockey and want to try something different.

And with three U14 teams and two U16 teams from the Rams going to the provincial finals June 9-10, hopes are their success will spark further interest in the sport locally.

"Our U12 team last year won the provincial (flag) championships and the kids were mentioned in the paper and they received a big banner," Calvert said. "And kids want to be involved with winning groups, and even at our level that's helped."

Al Chrzanecki of Foreshore has some tips for a homeowner in the market for a new mower.

“Buy a mower to fit your personal circumstances; if you are on a regular-size flat city lot you don’t need a rider mower, you really only need a push mower,” says Chrzanecki “Push mowers are somewhat different than we remember from our father and grandfather’s day. Andrew McDowell of 21st Century Roofers Ltd. is a second generation roofer; you might say it’s in his blood. The company, started by his dad in 1978 and taken over by McDowell four years ago, has grown from a small four-person business to twelve highly trained professionals.

“There have been lots of changes over the years; for instance on a low-slope roof we used to build it up with felt, tar and a gravel finish. Today we can provide a modern high-performance alternative,” McDowell says. “We are very careful about using new products, some of which haven’t been around very long. Our company will only use proven materials and technology and which has a good warranty behind them. Some of the new materials have been around for ten years or less so we don’t know how they will perform over the expected life of the roof. Another thing to understand is some of the new materials don’t have CSA approval from the Canadian government.”

He cites the example of a wood fibre product that definitely didn’t work.

“In the 1990s there was a new roofing product

made of wood fibre in cement; it failed miserably.

As we know cement is porous, as is wood fibre. This product may have been fine in Arizona but not in our climate and a lot of home owners suffered with roofs that caved in from the weight.”

Metal roofs are growing in popularity. There are different types: metal shingles, metal cladding and barn profile. 21st Century uses steel metal cladding because McDowell feels the hidden system makes it much more water-tight.

For most of us he says, a new roof is not a rewarding purchase that you can look at like a new television or sofa; it’s utilitarian. But not much else matters if on a dark and stormy night you hear the sound of water dripping onto your dining room table. Do your due diligence, check references, check to see if there is a string of complaints filed against the company and make sure you get the proper warranties. It also pays to check that the company is a member of an association like the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association which requires members to carry a minimum of $5 million in liability insurance, and is current with WorkSafe BC. Also, check to see if the company you hire subcontracts out. If they do you just don’t know who you are getting.

Tending to the neglected areas of the home

By Maggie Calloway After what seems like a long fall and winter with its wood fires, mud and dust, the pull to shrug off the heavy burden of cold weather by throwing open doors and windows is irresistible.

The problem is the winter takes a toll on your home, both inside and out.

It may be old-fashioned to schedule a spring cleaning but it can be quite cathartic to scrub down windows, wash curtains and hang them back up fresh and clean, and generally give the whole house a deep clean.

Like anything else worth doing, there is a method to doing a thorough job cleaning a house so it was time to turn to the experts, Molly Maid. The good folks at Molly Maid have refined cleaning to a fine art and that is certainly true of Vancouver’s Michele Yonge.

“There are a couple of things we advise people do before they deep clean; one is getting into closets and packing away winter stuff and hanging spring and summer clothes ... not forgetting to wipe down shelves as you go,” Yonge says. “Next, cleaning windows and washing or drycleaning drapes and curtains makes a huge difference. We recommend people wash the outside (of the) windows first because if you wash the inside first you don’t get the same bang! Don’t forget to clean the curtain tracks and window frames as you go. Use the tools that help get the job done; a dry, clean paint brush for instance is terrific for getting dust out of corners. One of the handiest things to use is microfibre cloths, (which are) great to clean wooden blinds ... plus can be thrown in the washer. Feeling the sun

shining through clean windows gives you great incentive to keep going.”

A big thing is to declutter the whole house. Look at everything on counters, dressers and any surface where things tend to land. Sometimes we are so used to something cluttering the house we cease to see it. If you are not using or wearing something, get rid of it. You deserve to live in a space where you can breathe, with sun pouring through windows and clean surfaces.

“We recommend people do three or four deep cleanings a year depending on your home and family,” Yonge says.

“Laundry rooms are another place to get organized this time of year. Instead of soiled laundry piled together, get (a basket) for whites (and) one for darks ... it makes it so much easier. Once the clothes are washed placing them in a designated colourcoded basket for each family member keeps the room organized.

Master bedrooms are great to dig into this time of year because they are often the place where things are dropped (and are) probably the most neglected room in the house. A final hint would be to put together a cleaning caddy with all the tools you need at hand; it really helps motivation when you don’t have to go digging around under the sink.”

The folks at Molly Maid have some tips for doing a thorough spring cleaning, including drycleaning the drapes, de-cluttering every flat surface and tidying up the kitchen.

Dedicating a room to the art of washing clothes not unusual

By Maggie Calloway Remember when the washer and dryer were automatically banished to a dark corner of the basement? Well, no more! Laundry rooms are now not just any room, but a designed room. Doing laundry is now an experience, with top-end appliances, drying racks, linen storage, granite counters and marble backsplashes.

I must admit I approve of this metamorphosis; doing laundry was always such a grim but necessary chore. Having the right tools to do a great job applies to this job as well as any other, and a dedicated room fully kitted out is a wonderful thing.

So what makes not just a stylish room but one that works well? Looks are important but not as important as workability. Think through the process: where are the soiled clothes stored? If you have side-by-side appliances make sure the doors open the right way; you don’t want to be loading the dryer over the door of the washer. Each should open in the opposite direction so a clear inner space is formed. Shelving for laundry soap, bleach and such should be above the washer and dryer but high enough to allow you to use the top of each appliance as counter space if you are in a small room. And let’s not forget the ironing board; you need enough space to comfortably put up the board and an installed rod to hang up finished items. This rod is also great for drying hand-washed delicates.

“This is a family with young children so having the laundry room on the main floor made great sense. Having lots of storage in a laundry room is a great luxury.”

If your laundry room is small, installing closed upper cabinets could feel confining.

Think about open shelving with attractive baskets. Old-time ceiling drying racks are back, somewhat sleeker in design but still doing the same job of drying clothes in an

environmental way. Steal an idea from the garage and install a wall-mounted storage system; it gets everything up off the floor and, done properly, can look quite chic.

One thing I love in a laundry room is a very deep sink, again just like the old days, in which you can do many things, from leaving items to soak to washing the dog.

This is one room in the house where you can go a little wild with great coloured walls, maybe some wallpaper and let’s not forget a T.V. to help with the ironing. Why not?

You can now push a button to prime and the fuel is available immediately to the combustion chamber, no more pulling and pulling hoping the engine will catch,” he says. “In my opinion they have designed the system so they will start almost immediately and are much cleaner burning.”

If you have a larger property or a property that has a sloping lawn, a self-propelled gas mower is the way to go unless you want to fold pushing a lawnmower into your exercise program.

Like all things in life, as Chrzanecki says, there is good, better and best and the world of lawnmowers is no different.

“You have your basic steel deck push mower; a little better unit would still be a gas mower, still with a steel deck but may be self-propelled and mulch, which is a good thing; mulching is good for your lawn. As you get up the scale you get to a Toro model which they call a super mulcher. It’s an aluminum deck so the deck will not rot; it’s a 25-year machine if looked after.”

Once you have sorted out what you need in the way of a mower, you need to take care of it if you want it to last and perform at the top of its game. Dana Nicholson, the fulltime mechanic at Foreshore, has 25 years experience with lawnmowers of every stripe.

“My advice to everyone with a mower is to really watch which fuel they use and how they use it. The fuel we have from the pump has a very short shelf life; just a few weeks before it starts to break down.

I recommend, as most people will have to buy fuel from a gas station, (buying) premium fuel with no ethanol and only buy a gallon at a time,” says Nicholson. “I know it’s inconvenient but unlike fuel in our cars which gets used up quickly, gas sits in a lawnmower for weeks and sometimes months. If possible, buy Aspen fuel from a store specializing in lawnmowers or power tools; this fuel is refined down so far it is very clean burning with a long shelf life. The other piece of advice is to keep the blades sharp and clean. Look after the mower and it will do a good job for you.”

Making over a North Vancouver house to turn it into a modern, family-friendly paradise

By Maggie Calloway As we so often find, here is a family who loves their North Shore neighbourhood but the house, approximately fifty years old with one partial renovation in the 1990s, was tired.

Enter Kennedy Crawford Design of North Vancouver who designed the project, specifically Catherine Brown, who worked with the family very closely during both the design and building process. David Adair of Blackfish Homes and Construction, also based in North Vancouver, was brought into the project to do the actual build.

“This is a family of four who enjoyed their home but the whole main floor needed a major renovation to bring it up to today’s standards,” says Adair. “We virtually pulled apart the whole main floor. The original main floor consisted of much the same rooms in the same place. They had a pretty big garage with a small flex space; they weren’t really using this space so we took over a section of the garage and extended it to make a mudroom entry. In the family room we pushed the back wall, the TV wall, back right to the exterior wall to create the space we needed.”

The original flooring was a mixture of tile, vinyl and carpet; this was unified throughout most of the rooms with hardwood, which made a huge difference.

Vinyl tile was used in the new powder room and mudroom.

“In the formal living room the floor was leveled to match of the rest of the area.

The fireplace is original but the hearth and pedestal had to be adjusted to the new level of the floor,” Adair says. “The rest of it was just freshening up with new wall colour, addition of wallpaper, new ceiling fan and lighting. The dining room had a French door from the hallway so we opened everything up to make the flow better. We brought the new flooring through and again just freshened everything up with new wall colour, wallpaper, lighting.”

The powder room is a good size, but it was gutted and the flooring once again brought through. The new modern vanity and toilet match the new style; there are no jarring accents just a smooth flow to all the rooms including this one.

The kitchen and family room is perfect for this family. This is definitely the heart of the home where everyone spends their time.

“We really enjoyed this whole project. The family was excellent to work with,” Brown says. “Our client had a very good handle on what she wanted to achieve, particularly regarding the kitchen. She knew very clearly how she wanted to function in that space and how she wanted it to work for her family, then left it to us to bring it to life, giving feedback as the project proceeded.”

This kitchen is one of Brown’s favourites.

“This is a very large space. You can make spaces look too modern so we like to bring in pieces to soften them, give them more warmth; the barn door was part of bringing in interest,” Brown says. “We really like to find unique pieces; the island is an example of this. We had the design in our mind then had to go and find the right piece with a little bit of the traditional about it. The beautiful stone on the island is a real stand out with the distinctive lines. The funny thing is we had that exact pattern in our original drawings so it was great to find the exact match.

We used Caesarstone on the surrounding counters and the backsplash above the stove is a mosaic white marble which adds a bit of an interesting accent. The stove is Fisher & Pykel, the jewel of the kitchen.”

Brown says the client was good about communicating her master plan for the kitchen and how she wanted to use the space, which made her job easier.

“Every bit of the kitchen and family room, from the wall of storage cupboards with so much detail in the cabinetry, to the fabric chosen, to the colour of the stone, it all had to work together. We have an eye for detail right down to the hardware on the barn door to the faucets, the tile, every single detail is gone through so there are no jarring notes and everything flows,” she says.

I must say I love the barn door in the kitchen. I’ve seen them used before but often the room just can’t carry the size and heft but in this instance, with such a large space, it makes sense and looks spectacular. There is no doubt the success of this project is in how the family uses the whole space.

The homeowners were intimately involved in the whole process of choosing a design for their home, from deciding on storage spaces to choosing the colour of the stone. Brightening up your life with heritage paint

By Maggie Calloway There is no getting around it, painting the exterior of your home is a big job whether you decide to tackle it yourself or hire a contractor. We have all heard of curb appeal, and the quality of the paint job, the colours you choose and where you put each colour can make the difference between a stunning exterior and one that just doesn’t work.

If you decide to paint it yourself, know that preparation is 80 per cent of the job.

Tedious as it may be, taking the time to prep means your house will look great and the job will last. Make sure the wood is dry. In our climate it pays to wait until we have enjoyed a long string of sunny days, as painting over wet wood creates a world of problems, not the least of which is the new paint forming blisters. If you are painting over old paint, scrape off flakes with a wire brush and clean the surface. If there are bare patches, prime before painting. Check to see what kind of paint was used previously then take advice from the paint store about which paint to use.

Buy the best paint you can afford; this is not the time to be frugal. You want your home to look fantastic now and for years to come.

Is there an art in picking paint colours?

Heidi Nyline of Warline Painting certainly believes so.

“We have been fortunate to be hired to paint the exteriors of the ‘Painted Ladies’, the four heritage houses on West 10th (in Vancouver) and you can imagine how jarring it would be to get the colour balance wrong,” she says. “The colours are very bright and different on each house; they really make a statement.”

We have all agonized over paint colours, especially for the exterior. It’s not like making a colour mistake in the dining room which can be remedied in a day. Nyline says the problem is people are trying to make colour choices from a two- by two-inch paint chip,

which is impossible.

“You stand in a paint store and stare at thousands of colours, how are you supposed to put colours together?”

Nyline says. “First, take note of everything you can’t change; the roof colour and the colour of the stonework, the colour or your window trim if they are vinyl, etc. Next, (look at) the natural surroundings. If you have a ton of trees around the house that green foliage will impact how colour looks on your house.

For instance, if you use paint with a red undertone on a north-facing house with lots of trees, in a certain light the house will have a slightly pink look to it. You have to paint large five-feet by five-feet samples of your preferred colour range on (a) board to get the proper impact of that colour on your house.”

The moral of this story is take time.

Time to do proper prep work, time to properly chose appropriate colours, time to do the best job possible, or hire someone who cares enough to do the same.

Tech tips for new homeowners With the ever-growing amount of available home technology, buyers need to keep an eye on the trends as well as their future plans.

“Pre-planning saves you money and headaches in the end,” says Lee Rente of Encore Security and Automation.

He suggests that homeowners think about what they will eventually want.

Everything from cameras to speakers will need to have a wire somewhere.

The first tip Rente gives buyers is to make sure the house is pre-wired for sound, security, television and Internet.

“Making sure a wire is where it needs to be will save you a lot of money in the end,” he says, since having to go in and

wire a house once the drywall is up will force the installer to cut holes in walls and ceilings to run the wire through.

If you’re planning to mount a television, Rente recommends you look at the construction of your home first.

“It is very difficult to hang a TV on steel studding,” he says. “It doesn’t really support weight well.”

Instead, he tells homeowners to look for a piece of wood between the studs and behind the drywall.

The advice he gives homeowners is to share. “Always tell the tradespeople your ideas,” he says, adding that it will help both parties on their journey to creating the perfect home.

South Surrey gets classy at Woodbridge’s Pier 16

The project, from developer Woodbridge Homes, features 41 threeand four-bedroom townhomes right in the heart of South Surrey.

Touring the show home, it becomes clear how many small choices in the finishings add up to a satisfying whole.

Where many developments opt for intricate, colourful and showy tile backsplashes in the kitchen, Pier 16 offers a relatively simple pattern with larger, plain tiles that remind the viewer of exposed brick. It provides an air of confidence, like someone who knows they don’t need to show off.

Sales manager Trina Brady says this approach has made Pier 16 popular among younger and older buyers alike.

“It’s very classy and simple; you can dress it up with add-ons,” she says. “It leaves it as a blank slate for the buyer to fill.”

You get this sense from the whole kitchen: the quartz countertops are a little thicker than usual and the undermount sink is a little deeper than usual. It adds up to a satisfying package.

The main floor kitchen/dining room/ living room has an open concept layout, and it flows well from one setting to the next. Brady says she encountered a bit of skepticism when describing the L-shaped kitchen, but that quickly dissipated when they saw the room in person. That’s because the kitchen L remains unobtrusive even as it stretches into the middle of the space.

“The design here really makes it feel like a large island and not a barrier,” Brady says.

Every home includes nine-foot ceilings, and you will get tons of light coming in from the generously sized windows.

Heading upstairs, you’ll find the same big, bright windows in all of the bedrooms along with a good amount of closet space.

A huge deck flows out from the master bedroom and over the driveway.

It spans the entire width of the house while extending out by eight feet, which provides lots of outdoor space for relaxing as well as shelter for your car.

The master ensuite comes with a marble countertop, his-and-hers sinks and an oversize glass shower.

The shower is big without becoming obtrusive and taking over the bathroom. Brady says the glass walls on the shower kept the space wide open.

“To have it all see-through takes away barriers that would otherwise obstruct views where a normal wall would be,” she says.

Old-time variety shows will not vanish if a group of active Delta seniors has anything to sing and dance about it Boaz Joseph, reporter Surrey/North Delta Leader A lot of things have changed in the first 10 years of The Vaudevillians, but one thing has remained the same: The need to help others.

Just like the first show in 2002 in Barkerville, where members raised $4,500 to keep an elementary school open, the seniors' entertainment troupe keeps collecting money for annual bursaries for deserving performing arts students at Douglas College—to the tune of $72,000 so far.

The elements for The Vaudevillians came from founders Fran Dowie, his daughter Susie Francis, and tap dancers linked to

instructor Sandra Greene, who still helps with regular rehearsals at the Kennedy Seniors’ Recreation Centre in North Delta.

Former director, current vice-president and upcoming president Jim Trimble was also there at the beginning.

Having spent seven years with Toastmasters—and getting comfortable in front of a crowd—he was the perfect fit as master of ceremonies with The Vaudevillians.

“I’m the only M.C. we’ve had. I think I’ve missed two shows in 10 years,” says the 81-year-old.

Since then, it’s been all song, dance and comedy—a modern-day take on vaudeville stage acts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Trimble says the calibre of the ensemble has improved greatly in recent years.

Though technically they’re an amateur (and non-profit) troupe, when they get on stage, they set the bar to a professional standard.

Trimble credits much of the improvement to current artistic director Gordon Long, a retired drama teacher from Prince George.

“He’s a master of directing comedy.”

Trimble also gives recognition to seamstresses Leigh Burton and Karen Arland —two ladies responsible for some seven or eight complete costume changes for up to 22 performers in a show that lasts — Continued on p.6

This seminar will help prepare you and your family to weather the first 72 hours of a disaster—the critical time when emergency responders may be overwhelmed with calls for service. Specifically, this seminar will address fire related issues and advise when to turn off certain utilities in your home.

This is a free seminar, open to the public, at the North Delta Public Safety Building (11375 84 Ave.) from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Register at your local Community Police Station (CoPS) office.

Low flood risk this year It's unlikely that a flood warning advisory will be issued in Delta this spring.

That's according to Delta's deputy director of engineering, Hugh Fraser, who recently updated council on the spring freshet—or melting of the snowpack.

The spring freshet typically peaks in late May or June. Delta’s dike system protects the community with elevations ranging from 3.4 metres to 4.1 metres.

Fraser told council that Delta's flood response is presently at Stage 1, based on readings from the Fraser River at the Mission gauge. If the gauge reaches six metres, the emergency operation centre would be activated (Stage 2). Fraser said Stage 3 is unlikely this year, where the gauge would reach seven metres and flood warning advisories could occur.

A relatively cool spring followed by sudden warm temperatures can cause an accelerated snowmelt and rise in river levels, increasing the risk of flooding. Delta is presently monitoring the snow pack, which is the sixth largest since 1950.

Said by pretty much anyone else but Elizabeth Villeneuve, you might not believe them.

But she, and Rena Pratt, members of the Ladner-based team of breast cancer survivors who paddle for the Abreast in a Boat team, are doing just that on June 3.

They will be part of a 14-women team of other breast cancer survivors from Vancouver taking part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant that will feature an estimated 1,000 boats on the historic River Thames to honour Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne.

Villeneuve has been a member of Abreast in a Boat for the past 15 years and says the idea was floated about a year ago while she was racing in Malaysia.

“Someone saw the opportunity online for the celebration for the Queen and she mentioned to one of the organizers who was British and he said maybe we can do something,” Villeneuve said.

Between those two organizers a boat and crew was assembled. They are borrowing a boat while in the U.K. from another crew. Their team name is Abreast from the West.

“We’re going to be very close to the beginning of the flotilla on the Thames which stretches 11 km,” Villeneuve said. “We get on at Putney and it ends at Tower Bridge.”

Boundary Bay Airshow returns in 2012

After taking a hiatus in 2011 due to con of the 80th Street Overpass, the Boundary port Airshow is set to return this summer.

On Monday (Jan. 16) Delta Council a Alpha Aviation’s request to host the 2012 ary Bay Airshow with a beer and/or wine on July 28.

The Corporation of Delta will contribute cash toward the event.

The 2009 and 2010 airshows were atte more than 5,000 people.

Avcorp ships first batc wing components

What do North Deltans treasure most about their community?

Mark Sakai, executive director of the Delta Museum and Archives Society, is curious to find out.

Whether it’s the mighty Fraser River, the ancient archaeology sites along its banks, or the community’s long fishing history, Sakai wants to know what people, places and things the residents of North Delta identify with.

It’s part of a Delta Museum and Archives outreach program that hopes to connect North Deltans to their community’s history, and strengthen the link between the northern and southern sections of the municipality.

The Delta Museum and Archives was founded in 1969 by a group of Ladner historians and most modern-day Ladnerites are at least somewhat familiar with their town’s fishing village heritage and early pioneering families.

But it’s a different story in the North. For some, there is a perception that North Delta is simply a residential suburb that emerged after the George Massey Tunnel was built. But in fact, North Delta has a rich past predating the 20th century that may surprise some locals.

“Certainly Annieville has tremendous history.

The very first salmon cannery in British Columbia was established in Annieville at Gunderson Slough,” Sakai said. “It has traditionally been a settlement where Scandinavian immigrants came—hence the name Gunderson Slough.”

Meanwhile, Trinity Lutheran Church remains one of the oldest churches in Delta and Kennedy Trail—which was built by early settlers to link the Fraser River and Mud Bay—is an important historic landmark in North Delta, Sakai said.

In February, the Delta Museum and Archives will hold “mind-mapping” workshops with representatives from North Delta schools, local businesses, the South Asian community, church congregations, and other interested parties.

Participants will be asked what they treasure most about North Delta. And with the under-construction South Fraser Perimeter Road slated to

On Friday (May 11) B.C.'s Ministry of Education announced a list of 14 schools across the province that were included in funding totalling $122 million.

Exactly how much of that will be spent on SDSS is not clear at the moment, but a figure is expected to be firmed up over the coming months as site inspections of the areas requiring attention will be conducted.

Delta School District Director of Facilities and Planning Frank Geyer told the South Delta Leader the school is in overall good condition. It is made up of seven blocks of varying vintage—the oldest are from 1975.

Those in line for an upgrade are the shops wing, the single-storey classroom block, and two-storey classroom block housing the science rooms and library.

They are considered high priority.

"That just means that there's a greater likelihood in the case of a major seismic event that here could be some form of failure," Geyer said.

"And what this project will do is take those blocks of the building—the

structure of them—and strengthen them to do a better job of resisting a major earthquake."

Specific areas anticipated to have work done are walls, floor and roof construction.

"We don't have the specifics at this time as to what parts of the building components will require the most amount and what kind of work. That's the next step," Geyer said, adding SDSS has been on the district's list for seismic upgrades for a number of years.

The school's newer sections—the new gym, cafeteria, theatre and the addition built in 2003—are considered low to medium risk.

"Those four blocks aren't being touched in this project," Geyer said.

A seismic project identification report is expected to be done in the coming months.

Once that is completed, a list of non-structural seismic upgrades will be submitted.

"That will include things like restraining lights and ceiling fixtures, ceiling tiles and that sort of thing," Geyer said. "So, if the building does get a good shake (parts) will not come loose and fall to the ground and perhaps block exit routes."

Construction could be started next spring with completion in about 18 months.

Located at Delta Secondary School in Ladner, the academy placed first in every category they entered at the Extreme Dance Competition held at the Surrey Bell Centre on May 4.

The competition was for school dance programs from both the public and private sector. Delta took top spot in senior jazz group medium, junior contemporary medium and large group variety. In addition to these wins, the senior jazz group placed first overall and the junior contemporary group placed third overall.

This school year is the inaugural year for the Dance Academy. Twenty students in grades 8 to 12 are taking part, including five international students.

The program focuses on ballet, contemporary, jazz and hip-hop

while incorporating other styles of dance, such as Bhangra and Latin. Professional instruction from Jyla Davis, owner of Studio West in Ladner, Lesley Benham, owner of Deas Island Dance, and Katie Parks from Deas Island Dance, has propelled the students to new heights in their

dance.

The students dance as part of the academy two to three times a week. Operating within two blocks of the school timetable, the structure allows for students from other schools to also take part. The academy is open to both male and female students.

Torch run coming to Delta

A symbol of acceptance, achievement and admiration through sport will be making its way through Ladner June 8.

It's the Law Enforcement Torch Run, an innovative initiative powered by dedicated law enforcement personnel around the world in sup-

port of Special Olympics athletes.

Patrollers keep Delta parks safe Relay for Life returns to Summer program has reduced litter and property damage Christine Lyon, reporter South Delta Leader There will be some extra eyes on Delta's parks over the next three months.

Every summer the Delta Police Department, in co-operation with the Corporation of Delta's Parks, Recreation and Culture Department, hires a group of college and university students to patrol the community’s parks during the evening hours to ensure park users are complying with municipal and provincial laws.

Beginning on the Victoria Day long weekend, the newly assembled five-person team started patrolling approximately 20 North Delta parks and 30 parks in South Delta, cruising around town in pairs in a grey vehicle marked with Delta's signature bulrush brand.

"They're insuring that the parks are safe for community members to go to," said Delta Police spokesperson Const.

Ciaran Feenan. "What they're looking for is groups of people congregating, maybe things like open alcohol, open drug use, and what they're doing is they're reporting back."

In the past, the parks patrol team has stopped vandalism, interrupted parties and dissuaded other law breakers simply by their presence and con-

"We think it's been absolutely helpful in keeping the parks safe. It's reducing litter, discarded bottles, beer cans, things like that, and it's really helping the Corp (of Delta) in terms of repair costs with maintenance," said Feenan.

When necessary, the patrollers can request a police response for any situation they are not trained to deal with.

"In many instances they will have a police radio where they can get a hold of dispatch," said Feenan. "We're not going to put them in any position that's go-

ing to compromise their safety."

As much as the patrol team is out to promote safety, they are also there to answer questions, give directions, and be a comforting presence.

"They're just going to be out and about and trying to promote usage in the parks," Feenan said.

Police say since the program's inception, park usage has increased with families and seniors less concerned about risks associated with improper behavior because of the regular appearance of the park patrollers. reporter@southdeltaleader.com

That’s when the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual Relay For Life event takes place in Delta for the seventh year. The event is a non-competitive, overnight, relay-style event that is a celebration of hope, survival and a tribute to the lives of loved ones.

Teams of up to 15 people participate by taking turns walking, running or strolling around a track.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the community of Delta to show their support and raise funds for a great cause,” says local Relay For Life Leadership co-chair Christine Ma-

cleod. “I know the event will be incredibly successful in Delta this year and we invite the entire community come out and join us and to support participants through donations.”

The relay will take place on the track at North Delta Secondary School. The event kicks off at 1 p.m. and goes on, through the Luminary Ceremony at 10:30 p.m., overnight for those who are up for the challenge, and through to a pancake breakfast from 6 to 7 a.m., cooked and served

Rookie robotics club wins big High school students build 'sumo bots' for Skills Canada competition

The Grade 9 student from Sands Secondary School in North Delta took top spot in the Junior Sumo Bot category, a significant accomplishment considering he and his teammates only recently started building their robots.

Until two months ago, Sands Secondary did not have a robotics club. Sensing the desire to have such a club, studentteacher Emil Jurica, who is at the school to complete his teaching practicum, decided to start the extra-curricular club.

“Often these students’ electives are already spoken for and they miss out on taking a technology class or have the room for only one, so this club allows

them to experience multiple subjects in a non-graded, relaxed environment,” said Jurica.

Five students joined the club and set out to create sumo bots for the Skills Canada regional competition at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, which was just a month away. A sumo bot is a robot designed and built to push another student’s robot out of a ring. These robots must conform to certain standards such as maximum weight and size, but students are allowed to use their creativity to design a robot they think can win.

After a month of work, the Sands Robotic Team participated in the regional Skills Canada competition on March 2. It was the team’s first competition. Brach placed second, winning a silver medal

and qualifying the team for the provincial competition.

The team revised and modified their sumo bots to fix design flaws before participating in the B.C. Skills Canada provincial competition on April 18 at the Tradex in Abbotsford. Brach placed first in the Junior Sumo Bots category.

Several other Delta School District students were also recognized at this year’s Skills Canada competition. At the regional level, Delta students brought home three bronze, three silver and three gold medals.

At the provincial level, Cameron Laidlaw from Seaquam Secondary won bronze in the automotive category, and Alexander Thormeyer from South Delta Secondary won silver in mechanical computer assisted design.

The shows, a medley of comedy skits, dancing and singing, are based on material up to 1940—it was up to 1930 until last year, but an infusion of Broadway acts meant adding a decade.

There has always been one new Vaudevillians program each year, introduced each November and repeated, with minor variations, at different venues throughout the Lower Mainland—around 20 performances each year.

The highlights in this year’s show: • A Pat Trimble and Dan Minor duet song-anddance of “Ain’t She Sweet”;

• Dorothy Perkins, 91, singing “I Enjoy Being a Girl”; and • The Can Can dance—always an audience favourite.

Each show is accompanied on piano by Alice McAuley, 83.

Though the basic structure of each performance remains the same, weekly rehearsals take place for 10 months each year to keep the acts sharp.

“Being seniors, we don’t retain things as well as younger people,” Trimble chuckles.

The Vaudevillians range in age from 59 to 91.
