Some interesting fats We’ve come a long way from being told that fats are bad for us to learning that certain fats are not just good, but essential for health. Most of us have heard about the good omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA or DHA and how they can benefit our hearts & minds.

Rice bran oil can benefit athletic performance and increase lean body mass.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some other fats that have different benefits.

CLAs (conjugated linoleic acids) refer to a group of modified omega-3 fatty acids that are primarily found in dairy products and beef. Omega3’s from plants are not naturally converted into CLAs in the human body, but they can be chemically transformed into CLAs. Different isomers or forms of CLAs have different properties. Some have been found to kill certain types of cancer cells and inhibit the spread of other types of cancer cells. CLAs have been shown to reduce fat mass and may enhance immune function.

Supplements containing a mixture of CLA isomers such as Ultra CLA may support healthy glucose metabolism and insulin metabolism GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) is an omega-6 fatty acid typically derived from the seeds of borage or evening primrose plants. GLA is the active form of linolenic acid in the human body.

This fatty acid may have benefits for

inflammatory conditions as it is a precursor to the anti-inflammatory prostaglandin, E1. It can improve symptoms

of and prevent further deterioration in diabetic neuropathy. GLA is a component of healthy skin thus its supplementation can help with skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. As we age, the ability to convert dietary fatty acids to GLA is reduced. Supplement with GLA can bring back the healthy glow of younger skin. Women with pre-menstrual cramps or breast pain have found relief by supplementing with this fatty acid. Examples of supplements that can be used for this indication include GLA Forte and GLA Skin Oil. Preliminary evidence shows that GLA’s anti-estrogenic effects could improve the response of breast cancer

patients to select chemotherapeutic agents. Also, a metabolite of GLA has also been shown to modulate the immune response in rheumatoid arthritis.

Although not a different type of fatty acid altogether, safflower oil deserves a bit of attention. Until now, it was found on grocery store shelves as a cooking oil rich in omega-6 fatty acids, but recent investigations into this oil have revealed its surprising ability to reduce belly fat.

Supplementation with 8g of safflower oil daily resulted in decreased fat mass in the trunk region along with a small increase in lean body mass. Results were independent of any changes in the diet or physical activity level. An easy to use safflower supplement is Safslim, which comes in a pleasant tangerine or berry cream flavour.

Another food item that has gained interest as a health supplement is coconut oil. This oil is derived from pressing the fruit of the coconut palm.

Coconut oil has been touted to help reduce obesity and body fat mass because up to 85% of it is comprised of medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs. MCTs are easily absorbed at physiological pH and are not stored in fatty tissues like long-chain fatty acids, which makes this an ideal fat alternative for those looking to improve their body composition. Although coconut oil

is the most saturated food oil (even more so than lard or butter), it is interesting to note that at doses of 30mL per day, it has not been proven to be associated with increased cardiovascular disease. There are contradicting reports on this oil’s effects on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels, thus those with preexisting cardiovascular conditions should use this oil with caution. “Virgin” coconut oil implies an unprocessed oil that has not been bleached, deodorized or otherwise refined. Organic Fiji makes a virgin coconut oil that is great for those who do not mind the original coconut scent. For those who prefer unscented oil, consider using the version by Omega Nutrition.

Supplementation with any fatty acid will result in a similar side effect profile consisting most commonly of gastrointestinal side effects including diarrhea, nausea, loose stools, and upset stomach. Fatty acids are relatively safe to take, but make sure to discuss its use with your doctor or pharmacist to ensure you choose one that is safe for you and will not interact with other medications or supplementations that you are already taking.
