Horsland’s name will be familiar to many thanks to the 30 years he spent teaching in the Beaver Valley. Now he serves as an art instructor for the UBC West Kootenay Teacher Education Program offered through Selkirk College.

“It keeps me in touch and it keeps me active,” said Horsland.

“You can’t teach what you don’t know, I just try to give (students) a good grounding so that they’re confident.”

Away from the classroom setting, Horsland devotes any spare time to working with senior citizens and restoration projects.

Previously, he volunteered as a summer camp counselor for the United Church and contributed to several specialty art projects.

“I think that having a background in art made it easier to set up museum exhibitions,” said Horsland.

“Museums are for telling stories, it’s the memory of the community.”

Although his passion is art, Horsland organizes and maintains heritage kiosks at the Fruitvale Kootenay Credit Union

“When he sees something old, his eyes light up,” said Art Benzer, former chairman of the Kootenay Columbia Educational Heritage Society. “He just enjoys history, I guess.”

A trade token from the Boundary ghost town of Phoenix sold for $131 US last week.

The brass token issued by the Royal Billiard Parlor was good for 6¼ cents in trade.

According to Leslie C. Hill’s token bible, British Columbia Numismatica, fewer than 10 examples of this token were known to exist as of 1980. (Two slightly different variations exist.)

However, there may be more out there, for three others turned up on eBay in the space of five months in 2006. The first was listed for $222 but didn’t sell. It found a

It’s the first such token to appear on eBay, although many from the city’s 1976 celebration have sold before.

Kaslo RCMP said they would assist by removing anyone from village land who is engaged in unauthorized and unsupervised activity of mass gathering raves.

Robinson said the RCMP has identified some of the organizers, but their names have not been released to the public.

On Saturday night some of Rossland’s finest dancers demonstrated their talents in front of a big crowd in Trail. Kootenay Danceworks had a special show at the Charles Bailey Theatre in Trail entitled “Footprints.” It gave dancers a chance to show their talent as a sort of kick-off to the summer.

Three of the dancers are graduating, and two are hoping to further their careers

in dance. Two others who were accepted to professional schools for the summer.

Those schools include four weeks of auditions to possibly get into the full-time professional programs in the fall.

Renee Salsiccioli, coach, said it’s very exciting for her students.

“It is exciting, especially from this area, there is a lot of arts here, but it’s not a city where you can go to the theatre every night with ballet and the opera, it’s more sports,” Salsiccioli said.

“It’s good to have people realize that kids in this area actually have that opportunity.”

Scam to avoid SUBMITTED

Nelson RCMP have received a report from a Nelsonarea resident about a money-wiring scam.

A fraudulent cheque is sent (in this case, $3,996.68), the recipient is advised in writing from a company that they have been selected to participate in a paid consumer research program as a Consumer Service Evaluator. They are instructed to send a money-gram ($3,206) to a pair of mystery shoppers.

The scam advises that this is all part of their training on the way to becoming a full time Consumer Service Evaluator.

The RCMP would like to remind you to remain guarded when instructed to send money to unknown sources, no matter the circumstances or how appealing the financial proposition may be.

Fraudulent scams of this nature can be reported to your local Police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-4958501.

Lehbauer honoured by hospice association

The Castlegar Hospice Society is proud to announce that Executive Director Suzanne Lehbauer is the recipient of the prestigious BC Hospice Palliative Care Association & Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem Award Recognizing End-ofLife Care for British Columbians.

The award is being given for an Advanced Care Planning Community Engagement Project that Suzanne developed. She will be given the award, along with $5000.00 to go towards the project at the BCHPCA Conference in Vancouver on May 25.

This is the second time Suzanne has received the award. The first was in 2009 and made Castlegar the first small rural community to win.

“I found out yesterday,” said Lehbauer of the major kudo on May 22.

“I was planning to go to the conference anyway, I do every year. But this (award and money for Castlegar’s Hospice effort) is just icing on the cake.”

Grand Forks Bikes to shine After a one-year hiatus, a motorcycle show is set to return to Grand Forks.

With May being Motorcycle Awareness month, the Show and Shine is returning to the Overwaitea parking lot in Grand Forks on Saturday, May 26, beginning at 10 a.m.

“What we do is we try to do this on an annual basis and raise awareness for motorcycle safety – for vehicles to share the road with motorcycles, explained organizer Diane Muscroft.

Bikers will be displaying their motorcycles and there will be an Awareness Ride, which will go to Rock Creek leaving at around 1 p.m. By donation.

Grand Forks considering MFLNRO fuel management proposal

The City of Grand Forks is considering a proposal from the Ministry of Forests, Land and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) to remove fire hazardous material near Angus MacDonald Park.

The plan would consist mostly of pruning and thinning of trees and removing of debris that could serve as fuel (i.e. ponderosa pine needles) on cityowned land behind Extra Foods and adjacent to the park.

Second access gets second life

A second access road to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital is getting a second life as Trail city council has resurrected the issue and placed it back on the regional district table.

On May 9 council reaffirmed its commitment for construction of a second access route to the hospital — an issue in the city for nearly a decade — with a letter of support.

In mid April the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) board of directors made a call for letters of support from all municipalities and electoral areas to see if the project had any appeal, either regionally or just locally.

Trail was the first municipality to sign back on to the proposed $2-million project, but it still has plenty of hurdles and commitments to obtain, as well as de-

termining the city’s annual cost for the venture, said councilor Robert Cacchioni.

He said if the entire region elected to contribute to the undertaking, it would cost Trail $34,583 (23.5 per cent) over the 20-year lifespan of the borrowing, but $64,943 (44.13 per cent) per year if only the seven East End communities — including Rossland, Warfield, Montrose, Fruitvale, and electoral areas A and B — signed on.

The last time Ivan Decker was in Castlegar he couldn’t find any castles. This time out may not prove any more fruitful in terms of finding any castles in Castlegar, but rest assured, he will once again bring the laughs.

“I was a little disappointed the first time I came given that there were zero castles,” he said. “I thought there would be at least one. I don’t know how many constitute a ‘gar’.”

Decker was here in October as part of the Yuk Yuk’s Tour at the Fireside Inn with fellow comedians Marcus Beaubier and Garrett Clark.

This time, the youthful jokester will be the headliner for Stand up for Charity at the Element Club Bar and Grill in Castlegar and at the Charles Bailey Theatre in Trail.

Decker describes his comedy as observational, much like Jerry Seinfeld or Brian Regan.

“It’s generally pretty clean,” he said. “It’s more silly than it is dirty. I try to make it fun. I’m not trying to alienate anyone. I want everyone to enjoy the show.

“The style I do - I try to make the jokes relatable for anyone.

Old people, young people, anyone can come out and have a good time.”

Decker’s family is from Saskatchewan but he grew up in Vancouver. “I grew up in the suburbs,” he said. “I moved into the big city at 19 and started to do comedy then. I’ve been doing comedy pretty steadily since then. I’ve been on Just for Laughs.

Great Caesar’s ghost! ... a production called... ‘Shazam!’

Superheroes united in the auditorium at Grand Forks Secondary School during the 11th Street Kids Theatre’s production of “Shazam!” on May 17.

An original play written by writer and director Jean Pinto, it was inspired by classic super heroes and villains, and an old army uniform.

“I told everybody that we were doing a show on superheroes because I knew that I had heard about a show about superheroes called Shazam,” Pinto said. “I looked and looked and there was nothing. There was no show that I could find.”

“So cell phones weren’t in their

realm,” she said. “The other thing about superheroes was that

they had day jobs.”

Pinto decided to create a play with

superheroes called “Shazam!”mostly because she liked the word.

After finding her aunt’s Second World War uniform in her basement, which is similar to what Wonder Woman would have worn, she created the play.

The story is about a little girl’s pointed determination that Wonder Woman was her grandmother and her family’s reluctance to believe her.

(Erika Burroughs) pairs up with friends to bring superheroes back from another dimension but instead of superheroes, out come the villains.

The final play ever by the 11th Street Kids Theatre will be “Shrek,” a musical comedy about a grouchy, selfish green ogre who enjoys living in peaceful solitude in his swamp, until it is disrupted by fairy-tale beings.

I recently had a very interesting meeting with a representative of Teck Trail Operations and learned something that I am not sure many people are aware of.

Teck has been at the forefront of metals recycling since they developed the first lead-acid battery recycling program in Canada over 20 years ago. Today, battery waste is received from all over North America and the recycled lead from these vehicle batteries composes up to 20 percent of the total refined lead produced at Trail Operations.

A delicious BBQ lunch was served on Monday by the yacht club. The derby started on Saturday with wonderful sunny skies. The weather held off until Monday when the rain came The Arrow Yacht Club Family Fishing Derby was a great success with a large turnout of fishers of all ages. There were 21 junior fishers registered, with a grand total of 67.

There were three adult hidden weight prizes of $20 each. For the Juniors, three hidden weight and three hidden times awards of a tackle box and lure for each.

Action-packed couple of days on West Kootenay area golf links SUBMITTED

It was a busy weekend for Junior Golf with a two day event that doubled as the regular Junior Circuit as well as the qualification tournament for the BC Junior. All the juniors played 18 holes Saturday in Castlegar and then 18 holes Sunday at Birchbank.

The Browell brothers, Trevor, Aiden and Jesse, from Champion Lakes made their first start and played

well considering it was their first event in a two day tournament with the added pressure of Junior Scoreboard ranking points. It was good to see James Booth playing after taking time off to recover from shoulder surgery, and finally Amber Arnold from Castlegar posted her best tournament round of the year with a 78 on Saturday in Castlegar.

In the competition for the four automatic exempt spots into the

BC Junior, Tyler McKay from RTCC took medalist honors with a two day total of 149.

Brenan Moroney also from the RTCC and Jordan Hoodikoff from Christina Lake tied for second at 150 and Braden McKay earned the fourth spot with a total of 163.

Tyler and Brenan both held a share of the lead at the end of the day on Saturday with identical rounds of 74. Braden and Jordan were tied

at 78 after Day 1 and Ryan Fullerton was five back of the fourth spot with an 83 and Alex Rugg was six shots behind with an 84. Early Sunday it became a three player battle for first.

The lead changed hands four times between Brenan, Tyler and Jordan. It came down to the 18th hole where Brenan missed a four foot par putt, and Jordan a 12 foot eagle putt that would have sent the kids to extra holes.

In the race for the fourth Braden, who had started the day with a five shot lead, struggled early in his final round and both Ryan Fullerton and Alex Rugg from Champion Lakes made an early run for the fourth spot. After nine holes Braden’s lead had shrunk to two shots, but a birdie on the par five 10th then a run of four pars in a row was enough for him to hold on.

Garrett Underwood and Nolan

Renwick struggled on Saturday in Castlegar but both kids posted much better results on Sunday and Garrett ended up finishing a three way tie for fifth with Ryan Fullerton and Alex Rugg and Nolan finished alone in eight.

Two more Zone 1 spots will still be awarded for the BC Junior. These spots will be selected based on a PBE (Performance Based Entry) and consideration will be given for kids

that have had a prior commitment to provincial high performance camps.

For any player who does not get into the BC Junior Championship they can apply to Monday qualify at the site. Applications can be made on line at the BCGA web site.

There is also the BC Juvenile Championship, for kids 16 and under that any player can register to compete in. Applications for this can also be made on line.
