Car crashes into store on Third inside the store on Tuesday.

The accident happened at 2:10 p.m. in front of Flandangles’ Third Avenue location.

Employee Kelli Rous was working in the back of the store with another employee when she heard a loud noise in the front of the store. “I heard this roar, then things shook in

Rous said. “It sounded like a tsunami too when it moved debris forward.�

Rous and the other employee ran to the front of the store where they found a car had smashed through the window and was sitting partway inside the store. “The smell of

rubber and exhaust was overwhelming,�

Rous said.

The driver, an elderly man, got out of the car then sat down in a chair inside the store until paramedics arrived, tended to him then took him away to hospital. Rous didn’t know the extent of his injuries.

The man, who had been parked in front of the store, may have pressed on the gas pedal while his car was in drive instead of reverse, Rous said.

A customer who was inside the room when the car came through the window was lucky to escape injury. “The car pushed all this stock around him and he wasn’t even touched,� Rous said.

The fisherman who was beaten up and had his leg broken in an altercation last week has a long rehabilitation road ahead of him.

On May 12, Hupacasath First Nation member Bert McCarthy, 41, was assaulted by four men outside of the PetroCanada Gas Station on River Road. He was taken to hospital with head injuries and a severely broken leg.

Three men – one age 41 and two age 17 – have been charged with assault causing bodily harm in connection with the incident. A fourth

McCarthy is home now, and facing a long recovery. His kneecap was smashed and will ultimately need to be replaced.

McCarthy, who lives near the gas station, was shocked that something like this could happen. “I don’t know how many times I’ve taken the same walk to the same station and nothing happened,� he said. “This is home to me.�

At his home, McCarthy lay prone on his couch, his heavy bandaged leg in constant pain. “I’ll need more operations, then my kneecap has to be replaced,� he said.

He tries not to think about the incident, but it replays like a video clip sometimes. “I wonder how long they’d have kept hitting me if someone didn’t come,�

McCarthy said. “And my mother. She was told her son was almost beat to death, that was her Mother’s Day present.�

The single father wonders what he’ll do now and how he’ll provide for his fouryear-old daughter. “I worked at a cement plant in Errington and was set to fish this season and now all that is gone,�

McCarthy said. “I’ll be off work for a long time and don’t know if I can do that kind of work again.�

The incident has impacted his life in a more important way, namely with his daughter. “I used to play outside with her, bring her for bike rides and take her for walks and now I can’t,� McCarthy said. “I can’t even lift her up and carry her the way I used to.�

McCarthy’s friend Jason Watts thinks about the incident as well and says he carries a measure of guilt that’s hard to shake. “I wish I never left (McCarthy) at the marina. I wish I was there,� Watts said. “Maybe he wouldn’t have gotten it as bad.

Marine safety compromised Premier bitten by pest of a problem Communities on British Columbia’s West Coast are still reeling at the sweeping cuts to coast guard services that were announced last week.

Here on the West Coast, marine communication centres in Ucluelet and Comox will close and their services will transfer to either Victoria or Prince Rupert.

While personnel at those stations will have the opportunity to move their jobs, mariners will lose a valuable resource.

For when the personnel goes, so too does the local knowledge of the area. And when the local knowledge goes, we fear safety is headed in the same direction.

There is much unknown about how two units on opposite ends of the coast will be able to cover so much territory.

People in Newfoundland and Labrador have already seen the devastating effect that stretching search and rescue resources has on remote communities, with the death of a teenager lost on the ice. With hundreds of kilometres of rugged west coast shoreline hugging the unforgiving Pacific Ocean, we cannot afford a repeat on this side of the country.

Yet, critics of the cuts say this is exactly where we are headed.

We can only hope the Port Alberni Coast Guard Auxiliary unit is correct in its assumption that the changes will not affect their coverage in the Alberni Inlet.

We can also hope that response times for coast guard and search and rescue services will not be delayed because of these changes.

We understand the need for efficiency.

But not when it compromises safety.

ICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark has a new political problem buzzing around her office.

A year ago, the newly appointed premier was looking to change the channel for an unpopular government grappling with the fallout of the harmonized sales tax.

Newly appointed NDP leader Adrian Dix was touting an idea that is all the rage with urban folks, a ban on “cosmetic pesticides.”

All the better B.C. communities already have one, starting with Clark’s old stomping ground of Port Moody in 2003.

So she figured she’d better run to the front of this parade, swipe a popular policy from the opposition and do something to redefine the B.C. Liberal Party after the tax-cutting, regulationrepealing decade of

Gordon Campbell.

But first an all-party committee would hold hearings around the province, chaired by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett.

Bennett presented the committee’s report last week, and one could see what was coming.

Bennett is the rifle-toting outdoorsman who recently called on his government to abandon the carbon tax, saying it’s silly to keep pretending B.C. can change the world’s climate. He was recently appointed by Clark to co-chair the B.C. Liberal Party policy committee for next year’s election, a strong signal of the party’s rightward shift in response to the B.C. Conservative threat.

Bennett concluded after 10 months of hearings that the public aversion to common lawn and garden herbicides is based on “chemophobia” that flourishes due to scientific

illiteracy. That statement is both politically dangerous and absolutely correct.

I first covered this issue in the Okanagan 25 years ago, when environmentalists fought the use of Roundup by the forests ministry to knock down brush and promote new trees. The evidence boils down to this: these complex organic compounds break down in a short period to simpler, common components that pose no threat. Thus, with buffer zones around watercourses and temporary entry restrictions, they are safe.

Unfortunately, most people know little or nothing about chemistry and refuse to believe this.

It’s part of the scientific nonsense trend that has grown in B.C. society for decades.

of superstitions about vaccines. We have people panicked about imaginary health effects of smart meters, egged on by shoddy, sensationalist media reporting.

The parallels between local government responses to smart meter hysteria and this scientifically ignorant push against “pesticides” is telling. As Bennett put it, when someone becomes convinced her child is at risk, “that mum is pretty darn compelling when she goes to council.” Few have the courage to stand up to that.

The committee sought advice from Health Canada, whose scientists approve conditions of use for chemicals. Health Canada representative Lindsay Hansen said B.C. was the first province to ask for its advice, despite the fact that most provinces have imposed bans.

BC Hydro apparently has the right to enter your property to replace its equipment according to an agreement you have to sign in order to have electricity. I suggest they do not have the right to enter one’s property to replace equipment with equipment which is unwanted, perhaps unhealthy, perhaps an invasion of one’s privacy depending on where you stand.

I don’t believe Hitler

would have wanted a smart meter due to the possibility of his brains being fried by electromagnetic waves.

If we equate our current world dictatorship of the corporation with fascism we see that the reason BC Hydro gives for the mandatory installation of the meters only reinforces the concept: they claim globalization makes it necessary.

What we all need now is a Winston Churchill.

We realize that we have had to come out very quickly with a campaign that had many challenges and variables that have not been of our making.

My motives are complex yet simple: there is a very real danger that the Alberni Valley may lose this franchise.

We have tried not to use this fear factor as a main motivator for people and we have

tried to stay positive but the bottom line is people should not be complacent and think that this team will be staying no matter what. If we lose this franchise I would doubt we would ever get another back.

I am not naïve to think a junior hockey team can change the fortunes of a community. I am, however, keenly aware that our community needs positive opportunities and activities that contribute to its

healthy social fabric.

We need opportunities to come together, to take pride in our community, to celebrate, to network and to feel good about where we live.

We cannot afford to lose another positive entity that contributes in this way.

When I was involved in the efforts to build the Alberni Valley Multiplex I was accused of being a dreamer, out of touch with the needs and economic realities of the Alberni Valley

and I have heard these same criticisms again.

I respect people’s opinions and their right to how they feel. I do, however, ask that we all look at the bigger picture of what it takes to make a strong and vibrant community.

It is a delicate system of social and economic pieces that we must be very careful to preserve or our community will suffer.

“It’s hard to believe that this home is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary,” says Cecile Herkel, a 10-year resident of Echo Village and past president of the Residents Council.

“This place means lots to me, not only because I made it my home, where I live independently without putting pressure on my family, but because I was a member of the board of directors and president of the “Cottages and Towers,” she said.

Herkel moved to Port Alberni 72 years ago, from Debden, Sask.

Another resident, Phyllis Chisholm, also past president of the Residents Council, says that she has enjoyed her life at Echo Village for the past six years.

“This is a nice place to live. They treat you well and make sure you are well taken care of. I like going on bus trips, especially when we go shopping to Walmart on our bus.”

(The Residents Council

is raising money for a new bus, putting aside $50 a month for this purpose. More fundraisers are planned.)

“I am very happy with the upcoming 20th anniversary celebration of this home,” Chisholm said.

Leanna Fines, director of residential and community programs, is responsible for the creation of programs and activities that enhance residents’ wellbeing at Fir Park Village and Echo Village.

The Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society will host a community information session on Thursday, May 24 at 7 p.m. to address the public’s questions about the non-profit society’s intent to purchase the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

The public session will take place at Echo Centre at 7 p.m.

The society has raised more than $150,000 to purchase majority ownership in the team, but they need a commitment of $500,000 by June 1 in order to make a solid offer, society president Darren Deluca said in a press release.

The society wants to have a commitment in place before the B.C. Hockey League’s board of governors’ annual general meeting on June 6.

The answer is yes, a society spokesperson noted, but the first hurdle is to securing the team before creating an inclusive community model.

Four BCHL teams already operate under a similar non-profit model: Powell River, Merritt, Trail and Prince George.

“These communities have been our inspiration and will be there to help us succeed as we move forward,” Deluca said.

Minority owner pledges shares The info session follows on the heels of minority owner David Ness pledging to sell his shares in the team if the PAJHS is successful in buying the 51 per cent majority from Okanagan Hockey Schools.

Ness, a Port Alberni doctor who owns 20 per cent of the team, is one of five local owners who bought the team in 2004 and relocated it to Port

Alberni. He has remained loyal to the team and community throughout ownership changes and supports the move toward community non-profit ownership.

“My wish is for the community to obtain control of the Bulldogs, and to make the team a perennial part of the social fabric of the Valley,” Ness said in a press release. “My offer is, however, contingent upon the community stepping up to affirm my belief in it. If

Ness said he would not protest the relocation of the Bulldogs if the PAJHS is unsuccessful.

Society president Darren Deluca was appreciative of Ness’ pledge, but said there is a complacency in the community “because we haven’t been playing the negative card and stressing enough that this team could be lost to the Alberni Valley.”

Director Bob Cole said it’s time for the public to step up. “We will not make a bad deal to buy this team but we need to show that the community is behind us and that we have the financial clout to make any deal at all. David Ness’s contribution puts us in an even stronger position and we thank him sincerely.”

Eliminator goes ahead GERRY FAGAN Alberni Golf

Due to the threat of rain no one entered the Eliminator event, although there were a good number of men on the golf course on Sunday. As it turned out the rain held off and we got our 18 holes in.

The closest to the pin winners were Bill Johnston on No. 2, Chris Gardiner took home $25 for the Charity closest to the pin on No. 4. Joe Baker for his second shot on No. 6, Trevor Cripps on No. 13 and Bill Johnston on No. 17.

Glen Trask won the hidden hole on No. 3 with a natural birdie, which gave him a net three to collect $40.

Next up for the Men’s Club this Sunday, May 27 is the Twin Travel Scramble. This Scramble is one of the longest running events, thanks to Cathy Ferster and Twin Travel and Cruises.

This is a four-man team event picked by computer, with all the team handicaps totaling around the same.

Alberni Golf Club hosted the first Business Ladies’ Golf Scramble for the season on Sunday, April 29. Ten teams of ladies were out for a fun day of golf.

The theme was “Poker”, with different directions on each hole to give the teams a chance to win more cards to make the best poker hand.

The team with the best poker hand was

Joy Paxton, Laurie Josefson, Leanne Frechette and Maria Bodt, each taking home some “club bucks”.

The teams were then picked by random draw to come up to pick their prizes from the wonderful selection on the table, many of which were donated by our generous sponsors.

Closest to the pin on hole No. 4 was won

by Marg Toms (high handicap) and by Muriel Abbott (low

handicap). Hole No. 2 proved to be too elusive for anyone to land on the green this day.

Long drive on hole No. 5 was won by Joy Paxton (high) and Suzanne Jones (low).

Squiggly line on No. 6 was won by Cheryl McKay (high) and

by Crystal Hiltunen (low). The raffle prize – a hybrid – was won

by Diane Luke. The 50/50 was won by Joy Paxton.

Readings begin at 7 p.m. of local authors of all genres, including prose, poetry, memoir and non-fiction.

Admission includes coffee/tea and goodies as well as a chance for the door prize. Bring your writings, a guest and your enthusiasm.

Artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Wild! about the coast â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wild!â&#x20AC;? is the latest art exhibit showing at the Rollin Art Centre.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss this opportunity to view Jacqueline Windhâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredible collection of photographs capturing life on the West Coast.

Windh is both a local photographer and author who moved to Port Alberni from Tofino a few years ago. Her photographs include both wildlife and landscapes of the surrounding areas.

This exhibit runs from May 11 to June 9. The gallery is located at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Argyle Street.

Band concert at the Quay The Alberni Valley Concert Band will perform a mini concert on Saturday, May 26 at the Harbour Quay Farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Market starting at 10: 30 a.m.

The band will play a variety of styles, including swing, symphonic, march, bossa nova and more.

The band meets Wednesday nights in the E.J. Dunn Middle School band room.

Portal Playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Dramatic Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation of Greater Tuna hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even hit the stage in Port Alberni yet, and the amateur theatre company is already raking in the awards.

Greater Tuna was Portal Playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; entry into the North Island Zone Drama Festival, which concluded May 18 at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay.

The play was a late addition when the original selection, Whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, was cancelled.

Elliot Drew won best male actor for the second year in a row, this time for his performance in the award-winning play

by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard. Drew teamed up with Terry Switzer and Peter Wienold (also director and producer) to create a combined 20 characters â&#x20AC;&#x201D; much of the population of Tuna, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;third smallest town in Texasâ&#x20AC;?.

attitudes, is a tour de farce of quick change artistry, costumes and characterizations faster than a jack rabbit running from a coyote.

The quick costume changes really make this play, says Drew, and it is no surprise that Portal Playersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Teresa Drew won an award for best costume design. Drew stepped in for Colleen May when May became ill, finishing the costumes and choreographing all the changes.

The Players won the best backstage co-ordination award, which is handed out by the drama festivalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stage managers. Port Alberniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team was the most cordial, polite and efficient team, Wienold said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wish there was a way for people to see what goes on
