xplore the Nicola Valley, B.C.’s best kept secret for outdoor enthusiasts. Located along the Coquihalla Highway, the Nicola Valley offers natural beauty and attractions yearround that provide the perfect country getaway. The rolling hills, crystal blue lakes and streams, brilliant sunsets, and the romance of the old west are only part of the mystique of the natural surroundings. Right from the start, early settlers were attracted to the area because of its rich grasslands ideally suited for livestock and ranching remains an important part of the Nicola Valley communities, which include Merritt, Quilchena, Douglas Lake, Aspen Grove, Spences Bridge and Logan Lake. The region experiences mild winters, warm, dry sunny summers and boasts over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year. Climate, scenery and people come together in the Nicola Valley in ways that bring visitors back year after year.

The scenery is fantastic, the local hospitality is second to none and the ability to connect with the land and the history is an experience to not be forgotten.

EXPERIENCE T

our our local ranches, experience our local First Nations culture and hike to breathtaking view points. Top off your stay by experiencing the romance of the old west or exploring the backcountry on a geocaching treasure hunt. Everything necessary for an incredible vacation. ARCHAEOLOGIST FOR A DAY Discover local First Nations history in Monck Park right on the shore of Nicola Lake. Pictographs and depressions in the ground left by pit houses can still be seen scattered around the valley and north side of the lake. To reach the area, take High-

way 5A out of town and follow the signs to Monck Park. Leave your vehicle in the parking lot and walk down to second beach. To reach the pictographs, walk around the fence at the edge of Monck Park and look for a large, smooth, white boulder. Please remember, this is the private property of Nicola Lake-

shore Estates. The owners would like everything you bring in carried back out. About 900 feet from the pictographs, on the right side of the trail, are several grassed depressions in the ground, about 15 to 20 feet in diameter. These are where the pit houses once stood. Keep a sharp eye open; they are hard to spot.

SEEING STARS? Over the years, incredible stars from the country music industry have performed at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival, and the Walk of Stars began as a way to commemorate those big names. Many of these well-known performers are immortalized with their handprints embedded in bronze stars located around the City of Merritt. Follow the map on pages 21-22 to see your favourite performer’s handprints. The names read like a who’s who of country music.

EXPLORE THE DOUGLAS LAKE RANCH The rolling hills, covered in bluebunch wheatgrass, attracted the first European settlers to the area during the Cariboo gold rush. They knew good cattle grazing when they saw it. Cattle were first brought into the valley from Oregon and the Brigade Trail to feed the hungry miners. There are dozens of ranches in the Nicola Valley and many of the people who make their living riding the range today can trace their history back to the mid1800s. The image of cowboys on a working ranch still exudes romance. Douglas Lake Ranch covers a sprawling 200,000 hectares (500,000 acres) and runs approximately 20,000 head of cattle during the summer, making it the largest working cattle ranch in Canada. Established in 1884, Douglas Lake Ranch has been built up from the original John Douglas home-

stead by several owners. The home ranch is a whole village, complete with a twelve-grade school, a store, tourist accommodations and employees’ homes. Several lakes dot the ranch property and the fishing is excellent. The ranch offers privately guided tours, fly fishing and seasonal outdoor activities.

VISIT NICOLA RANCH Nicola Ranch, one of the largest working ranches in British Columbia, is located seven kilometres northeast of Merritt. This beautiful 250,000 acre ranch produces Black Angus, Wagyu (Kobe-style beef cattle) and fallow deer. Hay and other forage crops are harvested from its 2,000 acres of farmland. Settlement began at Nicola in the 1860s and grew to nearly 1,000 people. Nicola was the business centre of the valley until the discovery of coal, and the routing of the railway south of Nicola caused business to shift to Merritt. Visit two of the old Nicola churches, as well as the old Nicola Courthouse, which still stand today near the ranch. Visitors are welcome.

DOUGLAS LAKE CATTLE COMPANY The home ranch, just 40 minutes northeast of Merritt, is successful in bringing the mid 1800’s atmosphere to the thriving tourism industry by incorporating history, working cowboys, fly fishing and campfires, with luxurious resort hospitality.

FIND HIDDEN GEOCACHE TREASURE Discover the Nicola Valley’s rich history while using GPS points or clues to find boxes cached throughout the Valley. Geocaching is a modern treasure hunt that combines outdoor adventure with anecdotal and historical education as explorers search out sites of interest across the region. Using only a GPS receiver and your sense of adventure you can join the fun by seeking out caches in and around Merritt and the Nicola Valley. There are hundreds of caches in B.C.’s Gold Country.

For more information on the local GeoTourism program see www. goldtrail.com or pick up a copy of Jeff Bloom’s A Taste of the Valley — a local cookbook, history book and geocahing book wrapped into one.

STEP INTO THE PAST Would you like to know what ranching was like a century ago? Come visit the historic Quilchena Hotel and Resort site. Third generation owner Guy Rose says the cowboys still get up at the crack of dawn to look after the herd. With approximately 4,000

head of cattle, the Quilchena Ranch, established around 1870, is among the largest in B.C. The Quilchena Hotel, built in 1908, maintains an antique atmosphere that encourages visitors to feel they are stepping back in time. The general store, established in 1912, boasts an authentic saloon — complete with bullet holes in the bar. There is also a coffee shop which serves breakfast and lunch as well as a restaurant for fine dining.

LEARN TO MEDITATE True meditation takes training and

practice. Organizers of the Dhamma Surabhi Vipassana Meditation Centre, located 20 minutes south of Merritt, want to teach these techniques to all who wish to learn. Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India’s most ancient meditation techniques and is non-denominational. One of over 120 international centres where Vipassana meditation is taught and practised, Dhamma Surabhi is located on a 56 acre forested property that is accessed by the Coldwater Exit off the Coquihalla Highway.

RECREATION

EXPLORE R

ecreational opportunities for every season abound in our beautiful Nicola Valley. Whether you want to cool off in the river, keep your eyes open for birds and other wildlife, or explore the ski trails of the Kane Valley, you’ll find there is always something to do. GONE FISHING Fishers will have plenty to do in the Nicola Valley. “A lake a day as long as you stay” is no idle boast. With over 200 lakes in the vicinity, fishers will be both busy and happy. The local lakes are so varied that anyone can enjoy catching fish, whether they are families with young children or avid, competitive fishers who’ve seen it all. The Nicola Valley Fish and Game Club offers a trap range, 500 meter big bore range, a .22 calibre range, pistol range, black powder range and an archery range–all wheelchair accessible. During the year the club sponsors archery contests, public gun site-ins, kids’ ice fishing and more. Their range is located on 90 acres situated on Aberdeen Road about 11 kilometres west of Merritt off Highway 8. Another of the Nicola Valley’s many outdoor, year-round pursuits

is hunting. Locally, there are numerous species to be hunted. Pick up a hunting regulations guide at the Government Agent’s Office on Coutlee Avenue.

SET YOUR SIGHTS FOR THE BIRDS Some of the best bird watching is at Beaver Ranch Flats. This wetland enhancement project was finished in 1991 by Ducks Unlimited in cooperation with the Guichon family who own the ranch where this bird paradise sits. About 35 kilometres north of Merritt on Highway 5A, the marsh is home during migration to a long list of feathered creatures. Another birder destination is the Kane Valley Lakes area. Turn down Kane Valley Road and look for the bluebird boxes atop fence posts. For an identification guide try “Birds of Southwestern B.C.” by Richard Cannings.

With campuses in Merritt and Vancouver and over 300 courses available, come and experience what makes NVIT a great place to grow.

RECREATION

LONGING FOR WOODS? The Nicola Valley has hundreds of miles of back country roads awaiting discovery year–round. There are roads that take motorists up into the high country grazing lands, past alpine forests and early homesteads. Some go higher into sub-alpine forests, past pristine lakes and into undiscovered quiet places. A copy of the “Thompson-Okanagan Backroad Mapbook” or Murphy Shewchuk’s “Coquihalla Trips and Trails” will guide you through this amazing wilderness. From early May through July, wild flowers dot the hillsides and wooded areas. Most indigenous species are fragile and slow to multiply so please, just admire and photograph them.

EXPLORE THE KETTLE VALLEY TRAILS The abandoned Kettle Valley Railway had many con-

nectors. The railbeds, which ran through some spectacular scenery, are now being recycled into walking and cycling paths. Patchett Road south to Brookmere on the rail grade will link Merritt to the Trans Canada Trail. The Kettle Valley trails offer easy day rides or week-long camping trips. Whatever your choice, a copy of Dan and Sandra Langford’s book “Cycling the Kettle Valley Railway” is a valuable guide.

PITCH A HORSESHOE Horseshoe pitching is a great recreational activity for the whole family and, for many people, it is symbolic of summer vacations. Smith Pioneer Park, off Aberdeen Road in Lower Nicola, has 12 courts (24 pitches) built to regulation standards. It is open for play or practice any time if the players have shoes. The Horseshoe Club meets Tuesday evenings around 6 p.m. to play. New members are always welcome, including children,

Moving to Merritt? WE

and someone is always willing to mentor the young players. The season starts in May and continues into the fall, weather permitting.

HIKING AND CYCLING The Nicola Valley Explorers Society promotes hiking, cycling and camping in the Nicola Valley. Blessed with rolling hills, many lakes, abun-

dant backroads and fantastic views, the Nicola Valley could keep hikers busy for years. The best tool for planning a hike is the “Thompson-Okanagan Backroad Map Book.” During the winter, club members cross-country ski and snowshoe. Members of all ages are welcome and there are trips for those in less than excellent shape.

2012 ★ THINGS TO DO IN THE NICOLA VALLEY 15

RECREATION

RIDE YOUR SLED With a wide variety of terrain types, plenty of alpine altitudes and great trails, the Nicola Valley offers the best snowmobiling for riders of all skill types. A great location for beginners is at the Helmer Lake Recreation Site, about 15 minutes north of Merritt on Highway 5 (Coquihalla). More experienced snowmobilers can head south to the Thyme Mountain Snowmobile Trails, located 30 minutes south of Merritt just off of Highway 5 near the community of Brookmere. The more extreme rides are located 18 kilometres west of Merritt at Stoyoma or Honeymoon. For more information about snowmobiling in the Nicola Valley, visit the Merritt Snowmobile Club’s website: merrittsnowmobileclub.webs.com. Each year the club hosts a variety of rides and events including an annual Spring Fling, so be sure to check it out.

GO HUNTING Another of the Nicola Valley’s many outdoor, year-round pursuits is hunting. Locally, there are numerous species to be hunted. In the fall, deer are a prime age to shoot. Other animals include grouse, moose and coyote. A hunting regulations guide is available at the Government Agent’s Office, located

on Coutlee Avenue, or at any of our local outdoor sports equipment stores. Otherwise, check the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources website.

FLOAT DOWN THE RIVER

upriver to spawn. Every year Merritt celebrates the return of the salmon with the annual Coho Festival in late September in Voght Park. The date for this year’s event will be set in the fall.

With Merritt situated at the junction of the Coldwater and Nicola rivers, you can paddle a canoe or a kayak down the river. Otherwise, simply float lazily down the river in an old inner tube. A perfect way to spend a summer day.

FISH HATCHERY TOURS If you have never seen a fish hatchery, the Spius Creek Salmon Hatchery, which produces Chinook and Coho salmon, will be quite an experience. Come during spawning season, August and September for Chinook; November and December for Coho. While small groups are welcome any time, larger tours must be booked in advance.

WATCH THE SALMON SPAWN If you take a walk along the Nicola and Coldwater rivers in September, you may witness an awe-inspiring sight. Salmon come up the rivers to spawn for a twoweek period, usually in mid-September. The survival rate of salmon spawn is one percent, so it is imperative they make it

PAN FOR GOLD

GO BERRY-PICKING

Follow the footsepts of the Cariboo Gold Rush prospectors by panning for gold in the Thompson River and the nearby Fraser River. Spences Bridge is a good place to set up base if you want to attempt this liquid treasure hunt. Who knows what you might find.

CELEBRATE ABORIGINAL CULTURE A traditional, cultural, spiritual gathering is what makes Aboriginal Day a sharing experience for the people of the Nicola Valley. Aboriginal Day activities take place on June 21. Monck Park, situated at Nicola Lake, is the most traditional and sacred place for the Aboriginal Day events. Special guests, drumming groups, story-telling, dancing and games are some of the highlights. There are also hot-dogs for the kids and a traditional Aboriginal feast for the adults. For more information call the Conayt Friendship Society at (250) 378-5101.

Hungry? Do as the bears and birds do — fill your belly on a berry picking expedition. While many people have their own closely guarded secrets about the best berry patches, there’s certainly no shortage of sweet, juicy berries in the Nicola Valley. Just take along a pail on a hike or fishing trip and you’re sure to find some. Saskatoon and huckleberries are the most plentiful, especially around the Coquihalla Summit. Depending on the season, Saskatoons are usually ready by mid June and huckleberries between mid August and mid September. The Little Douglas Lake trail, Mine Creek Road and July Creek Road are all good berry-plucking areas. Take the last exit before the toll booth (exit 228) heading south of the Coquihalla Highway to get to this area.

TRY STAR GAZING If dark night skies, twinkling

stars and telescopes attract you, mark your calendars to join other stargazers in Merritt this September. Each year the Merritt Astronomical Society hosts a large star party known as Star Quest, during which visitors pull all-nighters under a canopy of stars observing heavenly objects. The party runs from Sept. 8 to 15 (2012) at the Loon Lake Gravel Pit. Visit merrittastronomical.com for more details.

I

t is my pleasure to welcome you to Merritt and the Nicola Valley. Whether you are here for a night, a few days, or are already a resident, there are so many things to do in our beautiful valley. If you are a visitor you may even find the need to return again and again to be able to take in everything on your list. Even with being a lifetime resident, I still learn of new and interesting things to see or to attend. We are so fortunate to have the excellent weather that allows us to spend so many hours outdoors enjoying activities such as golfing at three topnotch courses, water skiing, wind surfing, boating, sailing and fishing on one of our many lakes, horse-back riding, mountain biking, dirt biking, ATVing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing,

hiking and walking on the many trails that surround us. Watch stars in one of the best locations in BC. Learn to fly fish at a fully stocked private lake. Watch or actually drive a stock car at the race track. Learn about our history, geocaching, or be a first to find. Take a stroll through our historic downtown, find your favourite country music artists’ handprint or mural. Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, or just kick back, sit and enjoy the sounds of nature at its finest. Many of our residents question why people head south for the winter, when most winters are so mild it is not unpleasant to remain in the valley. Merritt is truly a unique experience, one that should be enjoyed time and time again. If my words cannot convince you to stay awhile, perhaps viewing our website will. Enjoy your time with us, and I hope you do come back again or even decide to make the Nicola Valley your home.

HISTORY & CULTURE

DISCOVER N

estled neatly between hills and rivers of the Nicola Valley, the City of Merritt and surrounding communities are still alive and thriving. Built on the backs of hardy pioneers and the First Nations people who were native to the land, the area has a rich history to celebrate. Take a history walk through Merritt or visit the museum to learn more about what made the area what it is today.

TRAVEL THROUGH TIME

HERITAGE WALK

Located at 1675 Tutill Court, the Nicola Valley Museum and Archives transports visitors to an earlier era to experience its mining, ranching and logging exhibits. There are also displays of the Valley’s medical history, a parlour that displays the elegance of earlier times, and the clothing and tools used by early settlers. There are artifacts from renowned early citizens including Harry Priest, a photographer who chronicled Valley life for decades. The museum also boasts a model train with an early Merritt setting which is operated by the Merritt Model Railway Club. Archives are also available to researchers. The museum is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended hours from May to the September long weekend.

You may have seen plaques on buildings around the community. These plaques are a way for the Merritt Heritage Commission to recognize a building’s historical significance to Merritt. All the buildings are pre-Second World War. The Baillie House (the oldest) was built in 1908, and the Post Office (the youngest) was built in 1939. The Commission has created a walk that takes visitors to all these properties as a way to look back at old Merritt while the city works to build a new future. A brochure on these sites is available at Baillie House.

HISTORIC BAILLIE PROPERTY Open the door to Baillie House and step back in time to when the Valley was beginning to boom.

Cosam Bigney built C Bi b il the h hhouse ffor his English bride-to-be, but she fell in love with another man on the voyage and never arrived in Merritt. Bigney never married but lived in the house with his business partner until it was purchased by blacksmith Melville Baillie in 1938. Baillie lived in the house until 1990 and, in 1998, the Nicola Valley Heritage Committee acquired the

building as a heritage site. Baillie House hosts spring and fall garage sales, a Christmas craft sale, Mother’s Day luncheon, garden tours and summer teas. The grounds are also open to the public for summer picnics and public tours starting in mid-May. The Baillie Property is also Merritt’s downtown tourist information centre.
