Our programs help women heal by recognizing, understanding and overcoming the impacts of

In recent years my yearning for being more out in the public has taken me to a few different jobs. You may have seen me at The Late Rodan Jewelers, or the fashionable Ricki's Clothes store and now the very cool and cozy Bean to the Beach.

I'm loving the customers and all our interaction and baking to my hearts content, it hardly feels like working until I have to clean up to close. I have also started having Portrait Parties in my home studio. For as little as $35.00 to $50.00 you and your friends can have your portraits taken and take home a 5x7 of your favorite pose. And any type of portrait you would like. There's lots of laughs and it's a great

get together for a girls night out or a child's birthday party idea. I'm still promoting Visalus and have kept my weight off now for over 8 months and still love the shakes with all the new recipes out there I could have a different one every day. Well I got a new picture this year thanks to Harpreet who took my photo and of course I did do a little bit of Photoshop Botox on myself as well.

So many victories behind us, so many challenges to come

In Canada, almost half of the boards of directors of large companies include only one woman, and only six percent include two or more.

There is no denying the progress Canadian women have made in filling positions of power over the decades, whether in business or politics. During National Business Women’sWeek, from October 16 to 22, let’s not lose sight of the fact that these hardwon advances remain fragile. Let’s not forget that there is still plenty of resistance to fair female representation in certain spheres of activity. Before 1918, women in Canada didn’t even have the right to vote in federal elections! Since then, they have not ceased to take huge strides in their quest for equality in education, in personal and legal relationships, and in business. But many more challenges remain. In parliamentary representation, the numbers are low: women made up 25 percent of the windfall in the 2011 federal elections, but it that is

still far from the critical mass target of 30 percent. This dismal rate puts Canada far down the list of women’s representation in world parliamentary institutions around the world. Another place where the glass ceiling continues to prevent Canadian women from achieving their fair share of power is in boardrooms: women are notably underrepresented on private sector and public boards of directors. In Canada, almost half of the boards of directors of large companies include only one woman, and only six percent include two or more. Will the increasing numbers of women registering at our universities change this situation over the next few years? Let’s hope it will, but in the meantime, we must continue to support those who already hold decision-making jobs or who have set their sights on them.

Harpreet began her career in the newspaper industry in 2002 after graduating from Langara College with a Journalism diploma. She spent the next seven years working in Black Press as the sports editor at the

Prince George Free Press, Penticton Western News and Kamloops This Week. Because of her love of hockey she took the opportunity to work for the Kamloops Storm Junior B Hockey Club for the 2009/10 season as the team prepared to host the Keystone Cup (the Western Canadian Junior B Championship). During this time she got to see the other side of the media, working as a liaison with the local, provincial and national reporters. She also

DEBORA BUCAR

Debora Bucar of Randall North Real Estate Services Inc. is opening a new Branch here in Penticton, with her main focus being Property Management of Rental Buildings Residential & Commercial. Randall North Real Estate has been in business since 2008 in Victoria. July of 2009 they opened a branch in Prince Rupert, and April of 2012 a branch in Smithers. What makes Bucar’s company unique is the client focused service delivery business, which is something she looks forward to bringing

to Penticton. She helps Investors envision their goals and achieve them by focusing on maximizing revenue, improving returns and controlling costs. We maintain high property values through expert maintenance planning, increased rent revenue, quality tenants and low vacancy rates. Once her new office is open, “Growth” will be her first focus! Bucar is committed to growing the business through volunteering and networking in the community. With growth comes the ability to employ more people which helps the community in which she lives and works. Debora and her husband moved to Penticton from the Lower Mainland (Port Coquitlam) almost three years ago. Has three boys, which remain on the coast, two live in Vancouver proper and the youngest is in Coquitlam. The youngest is 21 and the oldest will be 25 in August. Bucar and her husband always celebrate with him on Ironman weekend because his birthday usually falls

on one of the days! He hopes to compete one of these years. She loves camping, biking, jogging, walking and swimming. When she first moved here she worked as a Realtors Assistant, and eventually went to a local notary’s office to do Conveyancing work. Bucar has had over 15 years legal experience on the coast, but no positions were available for her in a law firm when she first came up here. February of 2011 she was laid off and with no work available decided to reinvent herself, always believing when one door closes another one opens. April 2011, there was an ad in the paper, Bucar applied for the position to open an office here in Penticton for property management, and here she is a year later, that dream is coming true. Bucar is excited to belong to such a vibrant community and looks forward to building this business here. After the office is open, she plans on dividing her time to allow herself to volunteer and get more involved with the community.

The past year has been incredible for the women of Penticton Laser and Skin Clinic. In September we changed our name to what has always been our legal name and this brought with it the need for development of our new website, new e-mail address, a new logo, and all new signage. It was a momentous task, but we are proud of the outcome. The website is 98% done, and we are in the process of preparing our before- and- after images showcasing our work over the last 6-plus years. We are in production of our video to demonstrate all our services, intended to give you a glimpse of what happens behind the doors. In 2011 Breanne joined our team, and we are so thrilled with the tal-

ent and skill she lends with her friendly and positive attitude. René had the opportunity to visit Germany last year where our new skin care line dermaviduals® is manufactured. It was a privilege to see the intricate details that go into the manufacture of a single bottle of cream or cleanser, and of course the education while there was top shelf material too. Amie has had a year of focus on further development and education in the area of Botox © and fillers. She is a remarkably talented operator and the compliments from our regular clients are always abundant. Our tightly knit team has attended many events this last year including the Working Woman’s Open, hosted by Sun FM for the benefit of the Children’s

Charity. We’ve hosted 2 ladies nights at the Buffl eBuffle head, attended the annual Welcome Wagon Bridal Show, and for the first time this year the Lakeside Resort bridal show, to name a few. We always enjoy time spent at events like these and regularly donate gift packs to different organizations for their own fundraising efforts. We are privileged to work with the wonderful Dr. Louw, and thank him for the support he gives us, his team, and our community by allowing us to support them in any way we see fit and possible. 2012 has already started with plenty of activity and we look forward to seeing you all at local events, and, of course, in the clinic.
