Big Time Out returns to its home Mark Allan Black Press CUMBERLAND — For the past several years, Big Time

Out mainman Vig Schulman has insisted the event was not an annual one in spite of it happening each year.

Each year, he

explained, he would proceed with the weekend of music and celebration in Cumberland only after finding an appropriate

headliner or two available during the right timeframe.

After staging the 2011 festival at nearby Ash Berry Farm,

Schulman now has a multi-year agreement with the Village of Cumberland to hold the Big Time Out back in its usual home at Village Park.

“The most significant aspect of this year’s event that excites me as the artistic director is the ‘fringe festival’ or taking the show to the

street in Cumberland,” Schulman says of the 2012 event Aug. 18 and 19. “We have always over the past seven years presented everything on one stage.

“In ’09, we had one of our acts, the March Fourth Marching Band, parade down Dunsmuir into the park and onto the

stage. It was a hint of the concept that will be very prevalent in this year’s model.

“While the ‘concert’ bowl will be the same layout in the Village Park with the mainstage and vendors, etc. as it has always been, I will be programming entertainment in the Cont. on Page 4

Bruce the Goose Aikman has been guiding in Campbell River for 42 years and he is back for another fishing season at Painters Lodge.

On any given day he will be fishing the Tyee Pool in August Guide, Bruce the Goose Aikman and September.

This year will be his 6th season guiding at Painters Lodge. When I talked to Bruce last year, he was in the middle of instructing his customers on some fishing techniques that will be used on the pool. Last week Bruce was going over his gear and waiting to head out to his fishing location.

So far this fishing season, Jason Shand, Derek Alexander, Mike Ravenberg, Kathy Whittla, William Ferguson and Mike Mclean have hooked into fish. The salmon range in size from 6.8 to 24 pounds. Festival wristbands will allow admission to Village Park as well as the other venues.

“My role is to build a budget … second to that I’m the fellow that basically designs the site … builds the site, develops site plans,” Haughton explains.

“I also develop the security plan working in liaison with the RCMP and the Village of Cumberland to see that through.”

“Every artist, every band will have a certain number of needs,” says Haughton, himself a touring drummer with Canadian singer Wil. “We’ll more often than not provide … drums, keyboards, guitars, bass that meet or exceed their needs.

“As a musician myself, I know myself what we can and cannot substitute.”

Qualifications & Experience: The successful job applicant will have Diploma or International Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor and/or Bachelor’s Degree in Social work with a focus on substance misuse.

An alternative level of education and experience my be considered.

Salary: $19/hr.

Approx. 30hr/wk.

Buy a brick, build a house in Guatemala Kristen Douglas Black Press Juan Antonio Juracan Chicoj works as a farm hand in Guatemala for a measly $6.50 per day while his wife, Tomasa Morales Morales earns $35 every four months for her weaving.

The couple are struggling to support five children – including a daughter who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and seizures.

This is just one of several stories local high school students have heard since the start of the school year.

A group of 27 students from both Carihi and Timberline made a decision in September to go to Guatemala as part of their International Co-op class to work on two

humanitarian projects.

But they need the communities’ help.

The students have to raise $5,500 to help with the cost of one of two houses they will help build for povertystricken families.

Buy a Brick, Build a House gives the public the opportunity to purchase a brick for $5 that will be used to help build a house in Guatemala.

The students also hosted a second Grunt Work for Guatemala on Sat., May 12 for anyone who wanted windows cleaned, weeded or basic yard work done, or any other household chores. Students worked in teams of two, were supervised, and charged $10 per hour per student.

op instructor at Timberline, said the grunt work day is good practice for when her students are in Guatemala July 1-15.

The kids were expected to carry all building materials to their work sites, for approximately 200 metres, up a steep and challenging hill.

Juracan Chicoj, 30, and Morales Morales’, 28, family is one of the two large families that will benefit from the students’ aid.

The students, working under the guidance of non-governmental organization (NGO) Porch de Salomon will help build the family a new home. The family of seven lives in a 15 metre by 15 metre dirtfloor house held up by poor-quality adobe, wood planks and feed

sack material. The roof and walls leak when it rains. They have an outhouse, two beds, a simple table and some chairs, according to Porch de Salomon.

The co-op students will help build a new 480 square foot house on the family’s property made with concrete floors, block walls, and a tin roof. The home is expected to have three bedrooms, a kitchen, a wood stove, a bathroom and covered sink area.

The students will also build a new house for Nicolás Nimacachi Nimacachi, 44, and María Cumes Sajvin, 41, and their eight children who struggle to make ends meet selling streetvendor items such as jewelry, clothing and weavings. Nimacachi

Nimacachi worked in construction up until ten years ago when he hurt his back and was unable to return to work despite spending money on doctors and medication.

The couple live in an unfurnished half block, half tin shack 6.5 metres by two metres, with a dirt floor. The roof and walls leak and the family has tried to keep scorpions out of their home with some concrete and rock work.

According to Porch de Salomon they have no furniture other than one bed which the father purchased to help his back.
