A middle-aged Victoria man was injured after his motorcycle collided into the back of a van on the 7100block of West Coast Road in front of John Muir elementary school around 1 p.m. this afternoon. A pair of motorcyclists were heading eastbound on West Coast Road, travelling approximately 40 km through a school zone, when one of them collided into the back of a cube van

turning left into John Muir elementary school. According to Cpl. Barb Cottingham, the cube van failed to yield to the oncoming motorcyclists. The motorcyclist attempted to avoid a collision, but ended up crashing into the rear of the van and was ejected from his bike. The extent of his injuries are unknown, but his riding partner, who was not injured or hit, said the man complained of injuries around his collar bone and hip region.

The injured motorcyclist was taken to Victoria General via ambulance with undetermined injuries. Cottingham said it was an instance of distracted driving. “It’s quite common for drivers not to be paying attention and they need to be cognizant that there are motorcyclists out there and cyclists,” she said. The driver of the cube van will be charged with failing to yield.

The Sooke Fire Rescue Service responded to a boat fire at Salty Towers dock around 7 p.m. on May 21. The fire was located around the engine compartment of the 24-footlong pleasure boat, causing extensive damage to the deck of the vessel and some fire and smoke damage to the interior. Fire Chief Sorensen said the boat was well-enveloped in flames when firefighters arrived. In order to put out the fire, fire crews had to manoeuvre

An engine fire was doused by local firefighters. the fire truck down a windy driveway and lay out 550 feet of hose to reach the burning boat.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown, but Sorensen said an electrical short circuit is suspected to be the cause. The coast guard was then called in for assistance, and the boat was hauled to the Public Boat Launch at the Prestige Hotel to be removed from the water by the owner. “We didn’t know if it was going to sink or not,” Sorensen said. According to Russ Nix, coxswain in training with the Sooke Coast Guard Auxiliary, electrical problems do happen from time to time.
