Mungall seeks answers on hospital delay Nelson Star Staff

Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall told the Minister of Health last week that taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill for the

Kootenay Lake Hospital delays.

Mungall questioned Michael de Jong in the legislature after it was announced earlier this month that the hospital would be delaying the opening of the new

emergency room and diagnostic imaging floors.

“To have made such a major mistake in terms of the flooring… People are asking questions in my community. I think they’re fair questions, and this is

one of the questions that they’re asking. Is this something that was avoidable?

If so, who’s responsible?” asked Mungall.

According to a press release from the MLA, de Jong said the Interior

Teen struck in crosswalk Nelson Star Staff

A 16-year-old Nelson girl was taken to Kootenay Lake Hospital Thursday after being struck at the crossing of Front and Poplar streets.

Police say the driver, an 80-year-old man, went through a red light.

Off duty paramedics and Nelson Fire Department members witnessed the collision and rushed to the teen’s aid.

Her injuries were not lifethreatening, but she was taken to Kootenay Lake hospital by ambulance, and was expected to undergo further tests in Trail.

The driver has been charged with failing to stop for a red light and failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Man arrested after break-in attempt A 46-year-old man was arrested after an attempted break-in at a Nelson business early Wednesday.

Police say when they responded to the alarm, they spotted a man who ran away.

He was found a short distance away and arrested, and discovered to have drugs on him. He’ll be in court July 24 to answer to that charge.

The man’s involvement in the break and enter and a theft from another nearby store is still under investigation.

Friendly visit turns into bust Nelson police say they were “checking on the wellbeing” of a man at his home Thursday when they discovered a grow-op.

The man arrived home while police were seeking a warrant to enter.

He was arrested and will appear in court July 24 on charges of drug production and trafficking.

Massive grow-op discovered in Winlaw Nelson Star Staff

Four people have been arrested and over 3,000 marijuana plants seized after the RCMP’s border integrity program and the Central Kootenay regional detachment searched a Winlaw home.

A search warrant was executed May 11 relating to the production of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.

Two men who lived at the home off Bojey Road in Winlaw were arrested along with a man from Nelson and a woman from Thrums.

In addition to the 3,000 marijuana plants, investigators seized related grow operation equipment and one motor vehicle.

“When you have 3,000 marijuana plants at one location the plants were not being grown for personal use,” said

Paint cans that have been collecting dust in garages and sheds around Nelson can now find a home at the Nelson Leafs Recycling Centre.

The centre began a paint recycling program at the end of April to deal with a growing demand for the service.

“When the Paint Depot shut down, Product Care who was doing the paint recycling for them asked us if we’d be interested seeing as we were already doing our small appliance recycling through them,” said Grant Wilson, manager of the recycling centre.

The expansion project at the hospital was originally announced in April 2009. The grand opening of the new emergency room has been delayed four times.

“You know, if there was one delay, I don’t think anybody in my community would ask this ques-

tion, but there have been several delays. What is that going to mean for Kootenay Lake Hospital? What is that going to mean for the community, and what can we anticipate next?” Mungall asked the minister. “Will we get a ribbon-cutting ceremony this fall, or will there be another day?”

According to the press release de Jong could not guarantee that this will be the final delay for the project.

“The response has been good,” said Wilson. “People that know about it know that they can come and look through any paint cans that are a half to three-quarters full we try to keep it around and see if we can get it reused.”

A certain amount per can is collected as a profit for the centre.

Wilson asks that anyone wanting to recycle unwanted paints drops it off during operating hours, which are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

Former Notre Dame prof dies with dignity Nelson Star Staff

A retired Alberta biology professor who chose to die last month, and allowed a newspaper to follow his final days, was once a professor at Notre Dame University in Nelson.

Lochan Bakshi passed away in his sleep at 87 after deciding to stop kidney dialysis and hasten his death before experiencing more pain.

Bakshi’s decline was chronicled in print and video by the Edmonton Journal. He believed strongly that governments needed to debate euthanasia, and that physician-assisted suicide should be legal for those with terminal illness.

Bakshi came to Nelson from the University of Ghana. According to the Journal, he developed a bachelor’s degree program at Notre Dame. In 1973, he moved on to Athabasca University.

A former woodlands manager with Meadow Creek Cedar is worried taxpayers could be on the hook for millions of dollars to reforest the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s old cutblocks.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you see how bad all the non-compliance issues are, especially the silviculture, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty devastating,â&#x20AC;? he says.

Kestell worked for Meadow Creek for 13 years, including five as woodlands manager â&#x20AC;&#x201D; although only spent a few months under the current ownership. For the last six years, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been the forester for Porcupine Wood Products near Salmo.

Kestell says during his time with Meadow Creek, they had an annual silviculture budget of $1.2 million to $1.4 million, mostly for brushing and site tending of older plantations.

Licensees usually try to replant cutblocks within 1.5 years of harvesting, he said.

However, a recent Forest Practices Board report found the company failed to do any

brushing for five years, and also questioned its purchase and handling of seedlings.

Kestell says the backlog makes the license unappealing to potential buyers who would inherit the obligations along with the timber base. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The problem now is who is going to take over those obligations?â&#x20AC;? he asks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Who is going to pay for that license to become viable again?â&#x20AC;?

When it was last up for sale a few years ago, Kestell says Porcupine concluded about $5 million was required.

Now, he estimates it will take $10 million to $20 million to bring the cutblocks back to free-growing status. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not going to be a licensee of any kind, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to be government. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to pay for it.â&#x20AC;?

The province has a dedicated funds to carry out silviculture work when remediation orders are not obeyed, but district forest manager Garth Wiggill wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure how much is in the account.

Wiggillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s order, issued at the end of January, requires Meadow Creek Cedar to replant all cut blocks in contravention and submit reports confirming the work is up to standard by mid-August. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because this determination is still under appeal it is premature for me to predict exactly how we may respond following August 15,â&#x20AC;? Wiggill says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My office is closely monitoring Meadow Creek Cedar activities and various mitigation options are being considered.â&#x20AC;?

Kestell also wonders what will become of the land base in the next timber supply review, and thinks his own professional association needs to accept some blame. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The overriding thing everyone talks about is the [Forest and Range Protection Act] and professional reliance and accountability,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe managers in this area live and die by the act.

But when something as large as this happens in the world of professional reliance, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accountable? Nobody seems to be.â&#x20AC;?

TRUCKING FIRMS STILL GROUNDED Although two trucking companies associated with Meadow Creek Cedar may be back in good standing with the B.C. corporate registry, they still arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t authorized to operate commercial vehicles.

Ministry of Transportation spokeswoman Kate Trotter says neither Partap Farm and Transportation nor Daminis Transport Inc. has its national safety code certificate.

Both companies hauled for Meadow Creek before being taken off the road for safety violations.

As reported in the Star last week, Dale Kooner is trying to sell three logging trucks and four trailers that belong to the two companies to generate cash for his Surrey blueberry farm, which faces foreclosure and receivership.

Kooner is the sole owner of Daminis, while his son owns Partap.

he continual delays for the opening of the Kootenay Lake Hospital upgrade are frustrating. Originally slated for a ribbon cutting back in November, the $15-million addition is unlikely to see patients until September.

As you have read on today’s front page, last week local MLA Michelle Mungall voiced the concerns of many constituents in the Legislature. It’s the first time the frustrations have been publicly aired in Victoria.

We’ve been covering the plight of the hospital upgrade for many months. Each time a date comes and goes, we ask questions. Each time the Interior Health Authority provides answers lacking any real detail. In November it was the mechanical system. In January it was the “finishing” details with items like desks and smaller pieces of equipment on backorder. Earlier this month we found out there is an issue with the flooring. With every story the frustration builds in the community.

A multi-million dollar construction project is complex. Dozens of sub-contractors and more than 100 workers have toiled away at the hospital site over the last couple of years.

When everything is working well, it’s like a finely tuned orchestra. Then there are the days when notes are missed and the trouble begins.

From our view outside the glass exterior, it would appear there have been many days where execution has been less than perfect.

Are the delays normal? For anybody who has ever embarked on even the smallest home renovation, the answer is yes. In the case of the hospital, the amount of paperwork, standards and inspections is massive. There is too much at stake to cut corners or deliver a product that is imperfect.

So what are we supposed to do? Like our MLA, we want to find out who is going to be on the hook for the delays. Vague assurances from the Minister of Health have not provided the answers. Our guess is that it will be many months before it all gets sorted out.

When the ribbon is finally cut, the new wing of the hospital is going to be a source of tremendous pride for all community members. Unfortunately the pride bursting inside of us is going to have to be quelled until the scissors are finally drawn.

The Nelson Star is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry.

The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. Spring a busy time for council

I

’m coming to the end of the long weekend as I write this and it’s been a good one, full of activities in and out of Nelson. I’ve bought flowers and bedding plants in various greenhouses, went to Lucas Myers’ production in Ymir and even had time for a round of golf.

It’s the time of year when people are ready to get out and participate in community and there are upcoming events of interest for everyone.

The next round of community consultations regarding the Columbia River Treaty are coming up at the end of this month. Many of you attended the fall sessions sponsored by your local government when we partnered with the Columbia Basin Trust to take its educational show on the road. We answered questions and collected your feedback about what

This time round, the provincial government will join CBT and local governments to provide their perspective and to answer your questions on their plans for treaty discussions with the United States. These events will also provide an opportunity to answer the questions you had in the first round. West Kootenay events will be held in Creston on May 30, Nakusp on June 5 and Castlegar on June 6. Sessions will begin with an open house at 3 p.m., followed by a free dinner, then presentations by the province. Council and staff recently met to strike a committee to put the downtown and waterfront master plan into action. councillor Robin Cherbo and I will lead the Hall and Baker streets plans while councillor Candace Batycki and Mayor John Dooley take on Rail Town.

In this first phase we’ll be working with the business sector and the larger community to initiate projects around improvements to Hall street, the gazebo at the Prestige Inn, the farmers market, the CP stationhouse and lights on Baker street. This work is coinciding with the Kootenay Co-op store’s plan for renovation and expansion and the work of other business owners in the downtown core. Many of you have approached me with ideas, and I’ll be looking forward to work-

Council recently directed staff to explore restructuring the Heritage and Advisory Planning Commissions. There have been concerns raised that this will mean the end of the important role that these commissions have played in restoring and protecting important heritage sites in our community. In giving the go ahead to this work, council is clear that heritage will continue to be a keystone piece in the future of our community.

The intent is to improve communication between the community, council, and its commissions and to ensure we are using an integrated approach in decision making. If you have ideas or concerns about the future of these groups, do contact us.

OCP has roots in Area E In answer to Mr. Zeeman’s letter to the editor “No clear OCP mandate” and the Hugs & Slugs comment on May 11 in the Nelson Star.

Taxation The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) has some services that are mandated by the provincial government and all electoral areas and municipalities must contribute through taxation.

At the RDCK, land use planners work in the Development Services Department which is a mandated service.

Area E has contributed to the service for many years and while all other rural areas of the RDCK have received planning services, Area E has not despite its healthy contribution to the service.

The development services department has other functions such as building permits, customer service, etc.

Area E will not pay any more in taxation due to having a community plan. The department exists whether we have a plan or not. The money used to prepare the plan thus far would simply have stayed in the department and been used on other areas.

Support for the Community Plan In 2010 a survey was sent by address mail to 2,100 ad-

dresses in Area E and absentee owners. A 40 per cent return received on the survey is a very good response rate and exceeds the number of people that come out to vote at elections. The survey contained 63 questions focused on land use and people’s values about the land. For example 93 per cent of the respondents believed lakeshore development should be conducted in an environmentally sensitive fashion. Seventy-seven per cent of respondents thought the RDCK should manage the location of commercial and industrial growth.

In Balfour, where Mr. Zeeman lives, the response to the survey was vigorous with 180 households answering the survey and the response was decisive with there being more surveys favouring a community plan than the combination of undecided and negative responses.

The request for community planning was brought forth by the former director for the area at the request of HarropProcter residents. It was on the RDCK list of priorities when I became a director specific to Harrop-Procter.

The leadership of the Balfour Chamber of Commerce, at the time, expressed interest in the concept at my initial meeting with them. On this basis the development services depart-

ment and I decided to test the idea of planning in all of Area E in 2009. Since that time we have sent out two newsletters, a survey, held three public meetings at different times in all four communities of Area E, taken out a full page newspaper ad, sent unaddressed mail notices of meetings, placed notices in the Nelson Star and Pennywise, posted the survey and meeting notices on my blog and sent our community emails where we have email addresses.

This is a community process meant to plan for amenities the community wants, define Area E to government ministries, new residents, commercial ventures and land developers so that the community retains its rural nature. Most of the draft community plan is not regulatory and does not impose restrictions on landowners. It is not zoning. Zoning would require a separate process at the request of a community.

Some areas wish they had zoning now given the invasive and undesirable land uses that are taking place in their neighbourhoods but such requests are community driven: not imposed randomly by the RDCK. Ramona Faust Area E Director Regional District of Central Kootenay

Another way to look at taxation The question of taxes and procedural applications is immense, however a new way must be found.

In the old way, a household would give 1/10th of the operation of his farm to the community to feed the whole. This then was divided up and distributed to each household always leaving some for dry times.

If everyone was honest (and there was no reason not to be) there was usually plenty for all.

If there was not, however it was the leaders who took

less, for it was their job to ensure the health and well being of the people.

Clearly this honourable perspective has been all but lost. Accountability has been murdered in this Liberal governmental occupational regime. This is where Rome began to fall.

The tax perspective should look like this: 10 per cent of all household and monthly income should go into the communal kitty or municipal government structure. Assets at the end of a person’s life should be divided up to the

family with 10 per cent to government. Of this money 20 per cent should go to the provincial government for infrastructure. Federal government should receive 30 per cent of this money. Big business must begin to pay up all the remaining taxes they owe or face penalties.

Of course there’s more, however, the concept and purpose has lost its meaning and this is what needs to be addressed.

Le bibliobus de Cochabamba de l’association AYNI BOLIVIA se rend dans les villages pauvres près de cette ville pour y offrir un service de bibliothèque, inexistant dans ces communautés rurales. En plus d’encourager les enfants et les adolescents à lire et écrire, il y a aussi des jeux éducatifs, des ateliers de peinture et de travaux manuels, et un soutien scolaire personnalisé.

Chaque village est visité une fois par semaine et cette école portative est installée dans l’espace couvert présent dans tous les villages. On sort du bus, tables et chaises puis on sort les caisses de livres et de jeux…et commencent les activités.

Presque tout le temps, je travaillais avec les plus jeunes et je m’occupais de six à dix enfants. En premier, il y avait l’apprentissage de l’alphabet, de l’orthographe de mots faciles et pour certains, la lecture d’un conte car chaque Bibliobus de Cochabamba en Bolivie enfant était à un niveau d’apprentissage différent. Je faisais le tour des tables en passant quelques minutes avec chaque enfant, et ainsi, je pouvais les voir de quatre à six fois durant la séance afin de vérifier et d’approfondir leur apprentissage. Il était donc indispensable d’avoir une bonne connaissance de l’espagnol pour être capable de communiquer et ainsi établir un contact humain chaleureux par la patience et l’encouragement.

J’incorporais aussi à la lecture, la connaissance des chiffres quand je le pouvais, mais en réalité, c’était les enfants qui m’amenaient dans la direction de ce qu’ils voulaient apprendre. Lorsqu’ils dessinaient, on pouvait voir l’intérêt et le talent de chacun. En plus d’apprécier leur créativité, nous pouvions aussi parler de choses et d’autres, surtout de leur vie quotidienne. À l’occasion, je parlais aussi de mon coin de pays.

Ensuite, il y avait les jeux et en particulier, les casse-têtes, ce que les enfants adoraient.

C’est un art d’y participer de façon à ce qu’ils découvrent par eux-mêmes le montage des pièces. À travers ces activités, les enfants pouvaient s’affirmer et même découvrir leurs talents car leur soif d’apprendre est aussi grande que leur besoin d’attention. Au cours de ces heures, s’établissait un partage, un échange qui va droit au cœur, je recevais autant que je donnais et même plus.

Anne Courrèges a monté ce projet en mars 2009 et elle continue à donner son énergie, sans mesure, pour la continuation du Bibliobus qui a besoin d’aide. News Rosemont raises money for fire victims Tears and smiles filled the gym at Rosemont Elementary School as staff presented a cheque to Ava Koeltgen and her parents Harold and Jeanine. The Koeltgen’s lost their home to a fire earlier this year.

Police warn of A good way to keep money wiring scam track of traffic Nelson Star Staff

The Nelson RCMP Detachment is warning the public about a money wiring scam.

The RCMP received a report from a local resident who was not financially defrauded.

The scam includes being sent a fraudulent cheque in this case for $3,996.68 You are then advised in writing from a company that you have been selected to participate in a paid consumer research program as a consumer service evaluator.

The structure of the scam involves multiple assignments.

After the assignments

have been complete you are instructed to send a money gram through an identified company capable of sending money grams to individuals at a specified location.

The scam will advise you that in completing the assignments it is viewed as part of your training exercise and is viewed as a job interview for a permanent position.

RCMP are reminding residents to remain guarded when instructed to send money to unknown sources; no matter the circumstances or how appealing the financial proposition may be.

Fraudulent scams of this nature can be reported to your local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

DriveBC is busy getting ready for summer travellers by installing 30 new webcams around B.C. and the first few are at the Balfour and Kootenay Bay ferry terminals.

The cameras are now live on the DriveBC network and will help people headed to the ferry gauge weather, road conditions and most importantly for the ferry terminals, line-ups.

A webcam was installed last summer at the Kootenay Bay terminal by the East Shore Internet Society.

The makings of Superstar With Kevin Armstrong at the helm, the Nelson Opera Society embarks on production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar and is looking to tap into the deep talents of the community with auditions beginning this weekend BOB HALL

After an epic return to his hometown as part of KHAOS, Kevin Armstrong is now settling back to his roots by helping bring Jesus Christ Superstar to the Capitol Theatre stage.

“It’s a show that I have lived with for a couple of years [as part of the cast] and a show that I still love very much,” Armstrong says. “I loved it even before I did it and I love it even more since I have done it.

I’ve been wanting to do my own production of it for a long time and it just so happened that all of the stars came into alignment. It seemed like the right time.”

“When I was about 12 I decided I wanted be a professional musician and it’s been my life ever since,” he says.

Once he graduated from high school, in 1996 Armstrong moved onto to McGill University in Montreal where he studied music and graduated with a master’s degree in opera performance.

In 2002 he moved to Zurich, Switzerland where he did an apprenticeship at the Zurich Opera House.

That stint lead to a 10 year stay in Europe that saw Armstrong perform in more than 100 productions ranging from Carmen to Night of the Musicals.

When Jesus Christ Superstar comes to life on the Capitol Theatre stage in November, Kevin Armstrong’s voice will be behind the scenes holding the production together with his leadership. But those wanting to see his impressive vocal talents on stage will get a chance on June 2 when he brings Opera for Heathens to the Capitol.

Opera for Heathens is Armstrong’s one-man show that pairs his fouroctave vocal range with his skills as a guitarist.

“It’s everything that is vocally grandiose and connected to music theatre somehow,” he says.

Continued from Page 14 “I got my foot in the door a couple of times and I never quite had the breakthrough that I needed,” Armstrong says. “But I was able to live from it for 10 years and had the opportunity to see a lot of things I wanted to see, learn new languages, meet amazing people and had a great time. But it was definitely the time to move onto the next step. And this is the next step.”

Armstrong was also lured back to his hometown by love having recently married local musician Laura Johnson. The two met when he was back visiting a couple of years ago and he stopped into the Coconut Lounge to see a friend perform. Johnson owned the late night coffee shop and music venue. The rest is modern history.

Fresh from his return, Armstrong threw himself into KHAOS where he was cast as Cerberus. Being part of the hugely successful locally produced opera gave Armstrong the fuel he needed to continue bringing great music to a hungry regional audience.

“Coming off the big success of KHAOS, I am very motivated to keep the momentum going,” he says.

“Hopefully we can get a few productions a year happening and maybe get a semi-professional group going. We have the talent here… let’s do it.”

Armstrong was part of three different Jesus Christ Superstar productions in Europe where he played Pilate.

When Nelson Opera Society driving force Marty Horswill asked Armstrong if he was interested in heading up the next production, he jumped at the opportunity to bring the rock opera to the community for the first time ever.

“The music is just awesome,” says Armstrong about the allure of the Andrew Lloyd Webber work that first hit the Broadway stage in 1971.

“It never gets boring and that is why it has survived for 40-plus years.

It’s just as relevant today as it was back then, it’s full of energy. There is something for everybody, people who love classical music, people who like folk songs, people who like rock-

out numbers and people who like Broadway musicals. It’s a story that everybody knows and told in a very non-threatening way. It’s more of a story about friendship gone sour than about religion.”

And now Armstrong is looking for a cast that’s up the task.

“If you find a couple of strong singers for those main parts — Jesus and Judas — everything else will fall into place,” he says.

Though the community is full of well known incredible talent, Armstrong is also looking for some hidden gems to be part of the November five-show run.

“I am sure there are some people out there with the chops that just haven’t had the right opportunity… hopefully they will come out of the woodwork,” Armstrong says.

L.V. Rogers Girls Soccer Earn Kootenay Provincial Berth

The L.V. Rogers Bombers girls soccer team sent a message to Kootenay high schools on Thursday afternoon at Lakeside pitch: soccer in Nelson is a notch above the rest.

In the Kootenay playdowns the Bombers took care of Castlegar’s Stanley Humphries with a dominant 6-0 win in the morning and then crushed Invermere’s David Thompson in the afternoon 7-0.

With the pair of wins the Bombers earned the right to represent the Kootenays in the AA BC High School Provincials in Kamloops starting on May 31.

“They played very well,” said coach Dave Spendlove.

“We are still getting it together for next week [at the provincials], but it’s coming along.”

The emerging dominance of Nelson teams at the Kootenay level coincides with the arrival of the Soccer Quest indoor program and coaching. Spendlove brought the program to Nelson five years ago and this is the first true test of the results.

“It takes five years to build a program and we are starting to reap the rewards of it,” said Spendlove who heads up

the Bombers program with a team of Soccer Quest coaches including Iain Harvey and Jamie Spendlove.

“Seven or eight of those girls have trained together year-round for the last five years. They have come through together and they play the possession game really well. Their knowledge of the game is very good and they know how to play the system.”

Goal scorers in the Stanley Humphries game included Morag Paterson and Andrea Stinson with two each, while Chloe Kuch and Keegan Paterson added singles.

Against Invermere Bekka Schrader notched a hat trick while Morag Paterson, Abbie Bourchier-Willans, Erica Augsten and Brittany Wheeler added singles. Bombers keeper Kat Garbula registered both shutouts.

The rankings for the provincials are expected out later this week and the Bombers will know where they stand.

“Our goal is to always go and win,” said Spendlove.

“We are normally slow coming out of the blocks, so winning that first game is going to be imperative. We don’t know the opposition, but I am quite confident that the girls will play good football and that is the main thing we are concerned about.”

For some of the girls, the Kamloops tournament will be their last in a Bombers uniform as they graduate.

Four of the players on the team have earned spots in Canadian university soccer next season including Stinson (University of Calgary), Taylor Stewart (Calgary), Morag Paterson (University of Lethbridge) and Wheeler (Lethbridge).

The Nelson Cycling Club has teamed up with the Urban Systems Foundation to help make improvements to the Rosemont bike park.

As cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts, the board at Urban Systems have committed to this initiative by developing a plan for phase two of the park and put $10,000 toward the initiative.

“It’s an opportunity to spread our resources locally so that we can make the community better,” said Jan Korinek, of Urban Systems and a member of the Nelson Cycling Club.

The enhancements to the bike park to be made this spring will include improvements to the landscaping, safety and gradual development of riders using the area.

Controlled landscaping, including drainage, the addi-

tion of two new jump lines and enhanced curb appeal are just some of the tasks the two groups are looking to be completed in a sustainable manner.

“Adding two sets of jumps will help riders more gradually progress to the next most challenging jumps.”

“Taking things that are normally thought of as waste and turning them into some element of the bike park, items like left over soil, mulch, disused pipe and concrete chunks.”

Wooden jumps to dirt landings will be utilized on the two largest of the jump lines to help reduce maintenance and maximize the dirt material available.

Throughout the rebuilding of the jump sets, measures will be taken to increase safety, like relocating trees.

Figure skaters finish season with a bang Nelson Star Staff

The Nelson Figure Skating Club wrapped up its season on May 5 with its annual skatea-thon and awards event.

Twenty-one skaters logged 1,787 laps of the ice in one hour, raising more than $2,400 for the club. It was a celebration made all the more colourful by the 1980s dress-up theme, as skaters and coaches sported their most lurid spandex, lace gloves and leather jackets.

Christina Champlin, led all skaters with 166 laps, while Morgan Sabo raised $712, the most of any skater.

Junior Academy skater Naomi Lee came first in her category with 121 laps, while Lily Linnen raised $115.

CanSkaters Courtney Donaldson and Lexi Elias led their group with $156 and 63 laps respectively.

The awards event followed, recognizing individuals who have excelled over the season, shown an extraordinary level of commitment to their sport, or who have served as models of dedication and personal conduct.

This year’s winners included: Spirit of Skating Medal Brianne Morris; BMO CanSkater of the Year Nyah Hedstrom; Adrienne McMillan Award Soleil Babcock; Dance Artistry Trophy Sophie Borhi; Coaches Cup Trophy Genevive Beaudoin and Isabella Kroker-Kimber; Most Improved Leo Measures (primary), Charly Defouw (intermediate), Christina Champlin (senior); StarSkater Sportsmanship Award (voted by fellow StarSkaters) Naomi Perkins; Test Achievement Award Sophie Borhi; Test Achievement Award

“The bike park gets really well used by kids and the more we do, the more we’re helping those kids.”

In addition to the $10,000 the Urban Systems Foundation has put forward, the Morrison Family has donated over $600 to the project and many more in kind donations have also been made.

Those interested in donating money, materials or even volunteer time to the project can contact the Urban Systems Foundation at 250352-9774.

While the building process of the park may mean that some riders will have to ride elsewhere for a short period, the project should be completed in time for the Fat Tire Festival in August.

“Nelson and the area produces so many high calibre cyclists and cycling trails,” said Korinek.

“There are kids in the community who have different heroes than hockey players and baseball players, they have cycling heroes and they want to emulate them… We’re trying to create opportunities for them by giving them a safe place to build confidence and skills.”

Sports Kootenay Swim Club

Swimmers strike gold Nelson Star Staff

The Kootenay Swim Club proved they were a contender at the Kelowna long course swim meet earlier month.

As of April the club has been focusing on training for competing in pools that are 50 metre long, since the short course season ended in mid-March.

“I was very impressed with

the team’s strong performance and team unity during the meet,” said head coach Dustin Boyachek.

The relay team of Jordan Andrusak, Kelsey Andrusak, Tenysha Van Mierlo and Gabrielle Hanvold blew the competition out of the water winning gold in both the 200 m medley and the 400 m freestyle relays.

The relays were only one of the many great accomplish-

ments for the swimmers during the meet.

Jordan Andrusak made waves with best times and placed first in 100 m breaststroke, 100 m fly and 200 m fly. She also had second place finishes in 100 m freestyle, 200 m freestyle, 400 freestyle, 200 m Individual Medley (IM) and 400 m IM. Story continues to ‘Andrusak’ on Page 21

Sports Diamondbacks Fall Short Against Trail Still looking for their win of the season, the Nelson Junior Babe Ruth Diamondbacks took on the powerhouse Trail Nationals at Queen Elizabeth diamond on Saturday for a double header. Fuelled by the strong pitching of Braeden Zarikoff (seen right), the Diamondbacks played their best baseball game of the season in the opening game of the afternoon. A timely hit by Jayden Maida in the second inning drove in two runs to give the Diamondbacks a 3-1 lead. And despite pushing the lead to 4-1 in the third inning, the strong Nationals team chewed away at the margin. In the sixth inning the Trail squad took the 5-4 lead which they did not relinquish. The second half of the double-header was a lopsided win for Trail.

The Heritage Harmony Barbershop Chorus and Nelson Choral Society are joining forces to entertain vocal music enthusiasts in a spring concert I Believe In Music.

Also participating are some young men of the Corazon choir who recently returned from performing in Cuba and the Kootenay Expres-

sions barbershop quartet.

The Saturday performances are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Bethel Church on Gordon Road.

“A variety of genres will be presented,” says Heritage Harmony Barbershop Chorus director Tim Joveski.

“With the Barbershop Cho-

rus and men from Corazon emphasizing the popular doo-wop songs of the ‘50s and ‘60s.”

The Nelson Choral Society, under the direction of Kathleen Neudorf, will perform a variety of spiritual, love and inspirational songs, representing several countries. The Choral Society, which has been a vital part of Nelson’s cultural scene for many years, has between 40

and 80 members performing four-part choral works with piano or orchestra each spring and Christmas.

Heritage Harmony Barbershop Men’s Chorus sings to support local events and performs numerous free Christmas concerts for shut in seniors around town.

This is the first collaboration by the two Nelson groups.
