Eighty-six B.C. mayors, including Larry Jangula of Courtenay, have banded together to strengthen their communities.

Jangula, who could not be reached for comment before the Record’s deadline, attended the inaugural B.C. Mayor’s Caucus last week, where the caucus endorsed the following statement found in a news release from the group: “B.C. communities are frontline service providers for our citizens and we are seeking a new partnership with the provincial and federal governments in the best interests of all of our communities.

The B.C. Mayors’ Caucus requests an immediate discussion on the efficient use of existing resources to better address the challenges our residents face.”

According to the release, the mayors outlined specific areas that need to be addressed including: • Create a Premier’s Round Table with the B.C. Mayors’ Caucus to discuss public policy changes that affect local government budgets and delivery of services.

Woman plunges from Hornby cliff Erin Haluschak Record Staff

A 70-year-old woman visiting Hornby Island died Saturday when she fell off a cliff in Helliwell Provincial Park, located on the southeast tip of the Island.

Witnesses noted the woman was walking along the edge of the cliff around 3 p.m. when she appeared to have bent over to have a closer look at something on the ground or possibly tie a shoe, and fell over the edge, Doug Chinnery, deputy chief of the Hornby Island Fire Department, noted to media.

“We arrived on scene and found our patient at the bottom of the cliff motionless. There were two civilian rescuers who had some first aid training who were making their way to the patient at the time,” he explained.

Chinnery added the fire department set up their

rigging system and a few members were lowered to help out.

“Around the time that our members got to our patient, the Coast Guard from French Creek also arrived.

The three teams of rescuers worked on the patient for awhile, and were unable to restore a pulse at that point. They loaded her onto the Coast Guard boat and took her into Tribune Bay where the air ambulance was waiting,” he said.

Tony Law, chair of the Islands Trust Fund, told media the accident is upsetting for all residents.

“We are all aware that the high cliffs can be dangerous, but at the same time, we want to see the view, and we want to experience it. One thing we need to keep in mind is that thousands of visitors come to Hornby every year, and this is the first accident like this that I’ve known of,” he noted.

St. Joe’s electronic system offline while it’s being repaired Renée Andor Record Staff

The entertainment technology at St. Joseph’s General Hospital has been shut down and removed for troubleshooting purposes.

Health Resource Group (HRG) Inc. — which installed 160 prototype touch-pad personal access terminals at no cost to the hospital — was at St. Joseph’s last week to assess ongoing problems with the system.

According to HRG CEO Ken Grant, the servers and operating systems were removed and taken back to the company’s office in Vancouver for further testing, with the expectation that the system will be back at the hospital within 30 days, problems fixed.

“We decided just to shut it down and (we will) reboot it in 30 days with everything up and running,” said

Grant. “I think having the gear here in our lab gives us the ability to use the gear that was installed there and see where the software actually sits and see what was causing grief that we were having.

“We can actually run it 24 hours a day so that we can see it under stress and put the stress test on it before it goes back in (St. Joseph’s) and then it should be stable.”

Grant noted problems with scalability, meaning the system’s ability to function during high traffic.

The equipment was installed in fall 2010 as a pilot project. The terminals boasted television, Internet, entertainment such as movies and games, telephone, a customer satisfaction survey, an option for ordering food with a menu based on the patient’s needs and a call nurse button, which uses a video connection.

However, the system had intermittent functionality problems when working, and at other times it shut down completely, leaving hospital patients without any electronic entertain-

“We certainly see this as a serious matter,” said Murphy. “It is important to us as an organization that we’re able to offer this to our patients. It’s fairly

Grant noted HRG has spent over $1 million on its prototype system to date, so it’s in the company’s best interest to ensure the system is working properly.

He said the hardware appears to be fine, and the issues seem to be with the software, which he is confident HRG will be able to fix.

Bill Stevenson, a patient at St. Joe’s a few weeks ago, told the Record last week about his frustration with the system before it shut down completely; he said the phone option wouldn’t work, only a handful of television channels worked and he couldn’t sign into his e-mail account, among other issues.

“The previous administration basically cut them off and figured that we didn’t need that kind of service, which is wrong,” said Grant, adding the company recently underwent internal restructuring and these two HRG employees are now either on-site or available by phone all the time again.

Murphy said St. Joe’s staff can often offer help to patients as well.

Conner Copeman had intended to catch a Central Mountain Air flight from Campbell River to Vancouver on the evening of April 20.

Instead, the wheelchair-bound member of Cumberland council went home. Apparently, his standard-powered chair was too heavy, according to CMA policy.

“They were willing to help facilitate some sort of rental on the other end, which is a kind thought but the setup is quite unique to the person that has the wheelchair,” said Copeman, who needed to travel with an assistant. “It’s not renting a car...It was just disappointing, to say the least.”

Normally when he flies, Copeman’s chair is placed in storage.

Using a specialized Washington chair, he is boosted into a seat on the plane.

Copeman’s wheelchair is nearly 300 pounds which, he notes, exceeds the airline’s maximum wheelchair weight of 120 pounds. Still, he feels the aircraft is “more than capable of taking this type of weight and this type of standard chair.”

He questions why the airline did not inform him of the weight issue ahead of time.

“At the very least, if they can’t

provide access to the disabled then they should pronounce that when they have sections in paperwork to allow you to be handicapped and fly with them. If they have the documentation available, it should contain the restrictions,” said Copeman, noting other disabled travelers have encountered the same obstacle with CMA. “From my perspective it’s a matter of policy. I may not be an aircraft structural engineer but there’s no reason why these workhorses, these turbo-propped planes can’t take that type of weight, the luggage that they pack. Extra items for air freight quite commonly would challenge this type of weight.”

Central Mountain Air operates a fleet of 14 twin-engine, 18-seat turboprop planes. Maximum load capacity on the Beech 1900D is 659 kilograms or 1,430 pounds, its website states. The Dornier 328 and Dash 8-300 can carry up to 50 passengers.

CMA contracts four planes and flight crews to Air Canada/Jazz, with flights in B.C. and Alberta. Calls to management were not returned.

The airline has reimbursed Copeman’s worker but has not reimbursed his ticket. He booked the flight with a different agency, through which CMA said he needs to negotiate. reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Educating immigrants about our education system Immigrant Welcome Centre helps newcomers to Comox Valley Scott Stanfield Record Staff

A small percentage of immigrants settle in rural areas of Canada. Most wind up in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, says Rachel Blaney, executive director of the Immigrant Welcome Centre.

The organization, which serves the Comox Valley and Campbell River, hopes to increase the number coming to the Comox Valley.

“A broader spectrum of people are coming to Canada,” Blaney said in a presentation to the regional district committee of the whole.

While senior levels of government are actively attracting immigrants, Blaney is concerned about expectations regarding our native tongues.

“The biggest changes we’re seeing are around making sure people have high levels of English or French before they come,” she said in an interview.

“I have concerns about that because it does narrow who’s coming to the country. The major-

ity of people who do come to Canada have basic English.”

The centre has served about 18 countries in the past six months. Most immigrants who move to Vancouver Island hail from the U.S. or the United Kingdom, but it is people from other countries who require the centre’s services.

Vietnam, China and the Philippines are the top three ‘source countries’ served.

Aside from challenges associated with not knowing people or processes such as school registration, Blaney said a perception suggests rural communities offer fewer opportunities than urban centres.

In some countries, for instance, she said parents who want quality education for their children need to move to a big city because it can’t be found in rural places.

“There’s many layers to it, but definitely part of that layer is educating people that our system is our education system, it doesn’t matter what part of the province or the country you’re in, that’s the system you go through,” Blaney said. “There’s definitely some barriers to a rural community.”

IMMIGRANTS average 260,000 newcomers a year. Last year, 34,776 immigrants came to B.C., but just 4,173 (12 per cent) moved to small communities.

Premier Christy Clark, through her jobs plan, expects one million jobs will be created in B.C. in the next decade. One-third of the positions will need to be filled by immigrants.

Courtenay director Jon Ambler asked how the centre answers questions that suggest immigrants take jobs away from unemployed Canadians.

“The attitude is an issue, but the reality is a lot of employers are looking for skilled workers and they can’t find anyone in Canada who can take those positions,” Blaney said.

“When we look at it we’re looking from our lens, but it’s important to look at a bigger lens.

There are businesses that are travelling and recruiting 400 people out of a particular country and helping them come here.”

She said it’s important to recognize the shortage of skilled workers during the present economic downturn.

“As people retire

it’s going to increase,” Blaney said.

Federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenny has noted a shortage of welders in northern parts of Canada.

A further example is the northern B.C. town of Mackenzie, which Blaney said is having difficulty finding truck drivers.

“Again, we’re fighting this issue where smaller communities are struggling because they can’t get those people in to do the work. And immigrants who might have those skill sets don’t know how to move to smaller communities in a way that they’re going to feel supported to do so,” Blaney said. “I think

A young Comox Valley photographer will donate funds from her photo shoots to Relay For Life.

Grade 12 Vanier student Katie Clarkson, owner of Clarkson Photography, will offer a sitting and four edits for $30 until the end of this month, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society via Relay For Life.

This is Clarkson’s third annual Photo Shoot for Cancer and her third year participating in Relay For Life.

“We started doing Relay For Life right after my mom survived it (cancer),” said Clarkson of her and her family. “I wanted to figure out a way to raise money for the Cancer Society … and my dad was like ‘you should use your photography somehow’ so I started up a photo shoot and it’s now in the third year.”

And this year, Clarkson has found a way to give even more “If people are going through cancer treatments and they want a family photo or portraits done, they can just contact me and it will be a free portrait session,” explained Clarkson.

Clarkson plans to make photography her career. After she graduates this June, she will go over to England and take a break from schooling for a year before she enrols in a photography program.

Clarkson’s Photo Shoot for Cancer has grown each year since it started, and she hopes it grows again this year because raising funds for the Canadian Cancer Society is important to her.

Cancer warning issued Medical health officer speaks at open house about cancer risks

‘World-class river’ awaiting Puntledge River Paddle Festival offers whitewater thrills Record Staff Offering something for paddlers of all levels, the Puntledge River will play host to an abundance of kayakers this weekend.

The eighth annual Puntledge River Paddle Festival is scheduled for May 25 to 27, and promises an adventurefilled weekend as the Island’s only festival celebrating whitewater kayaking.

“This (festival) is unique due to the features of the Puntledge River and the fact that during the festival, the flows are regulated by BC Hydro,” explained one of the festival’s organizers, David Prothero.

He added the Vancouver Island Whitewater Paddling Society (VIWPS) has developed a relationship with BC Hydro for a five-year recreational study, which looks for the benefits of having a water release and its impacts on other users of the river.

He noted the festival, which will be headquartered at the Maple Pool Campsite at 4685 Headquarters Road, has something for everyone interesting in paddling.

Dr. Charmaine Enns, in a recent address to the Canadian Cancer Society’s open house, expressed concern at the rising incidence of skin cancers provincially and nationally, including the more serious melanoma.

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation results in damage to skin cells and even tanned skin is damaged skin, explained the North Island medical health officer. The cumulative effect of ongoing exposure to ultraviolet radiation increases the chances that a person will develop a skin cancer over their lifetime.

Tanning beds have recently been moved to the highest risk cancer causing category, Category 1, by the World Health Organization.

This is the same category shared with tobacco, plutonium and asbestos.

Evidence indicates that using tanning beds before the age of 35 years increases that person’s likelihood of developing melanoma by 75 per cent.

Dr. Enns also stressed the impor-

tance of prevention and the reasons why youth especially have the most to gain by early prevention.

In the fall, B.C. will implement a law that will ban the use of commercial tanning beds by those under 18 years.

Garage sale for CCSS The Cumberland Community Schools Society is a non-profit charity that has been working in the Village of Cumberland since 2000 out of Cumberland Elementary School.

There are many ways to support the CCSS and to get involved with strengthening the opportunities for youth and families in Cumberland.

On May 27 the CCSS huge garage sale runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the gym at Cumberland Elementary. All proceeds from donated items go to support programming at the CCSS. If you have any items to donate you can drop them off in the gym at Cumberland Elementary on May 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or phone Jennifer at 250336-7902 if you need items picked up.

One of three community schools in the Comox Valley, the CCSS provides a healthy, locally sourced hot lunch program four days a week with partial and full subsidies available for families needing support, and excellent-quality, free, after school programming. The CCSS is also beginning to offer Community Programs for residents of the Village of Cumberland as capacity builds.

After school programs run in three sessions throughout the year and this spring, the CCSS is offering 17 programs, servicing 196 students and parents.

These programs are able to be run because of the generosity of volunteers who contribute their time and energy to make them possible along with important core funding from SD71, grants from the Coastal Spirit Fund and the Province of British Columbia, and contributions from local businesses and individuals.

COMOX MEDICAL CLINIC and Rocky Mountain Café have hatched a plan to donate a portion from sandwich sales at the Comox eatery to the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Fight cancer with sandwich snack Rocky Mountain Café and Comox Medical Clinic are teaming up to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life happening June 23 and 24 in the Comox Valley.

An office manager from the clinic recently passed away from breast cancer. To honour her memory and to make a contribution the fight against cancer, co-workers from the clinic and the staff at the café wanted to do something special.

The idea was hatched to have the doctors create unique sandwich recipes with fun names, which would be put together and sold at Rocky Mountain Café.

Two dollars from each sandwich will be donated to Relay for Life. The sandwich specials will be offered every Wednesday

between now and June 20.

Highland Games ALL THINGS SCOTTISH The 17th annual Comox Valley Highland Games would not feel right without time-honoured traditions such as the heavy games, dancing and piping, which always sounds better accompanied by highland drumming. Gemini ending with final show In the heart of Tin Town, at Gemini Dance Studios, is one of the most creative performing arts communities in the Comox Valley ready to show off their talent in their annual year-end show, Showtime 2012.

The studio is made up of a blend of extremely talented faculty, dedicated parents and students devoted to the performing arts. What every dancer at the studio knows is that they feel welcomed, are asked to do their best, and then encouraged to grow and develop their abilities as a dancer and performer.

Showtime 2012 is Gemini Dance Studios’ final show after 30 years of nurturing young dancers; some of whom have gone on to dance professionally all over the world.

Many of the pieces in this year’s show have been performed at the North Island Festival of Performing Arts in the Comox Valley, the Danceworks Festival in Victoria including their Gala performances held in Sidney and at the Royal Theatre in Victoria, as well as the No Borders Group Dance Competition in Surrey and CORE Dance Competition in Nanaimo.

Many of these performers and their pieces have been given awards and honoured with bursaries, gala invitations, trophies, medals, and scholarships.

The studio and its faculty wants the Comox Valley to

know about the incredible young talent being nurtured by their teachers and choreographers, and to encourage everyone to buy a ticket to see one or both of the shows.

The studio is made up of small children just learning to point their toes to young adult pre-professional calibre dancers, and the show will be a wonderful mix of all types of dance: tap, musical theatre, jazz, modern, ballet, voice and lyrical.

Core Dance Competition awards to Gemini Dancers include: • Meghan Caine received a scholarship to Triple Heat Summer School for her diversity of discipline. Meghan is a very accomplished singer, actress, and dancer.

• Meghan and Shannon Caine received a gift from recording artist Stephanie Lang for a two-hour vocal lesson as a result of their song and dance duet Couple-ASisters.

• Liam Galway received a scholarship to attend the mentorship program in Los Angeles including classes, videos, and all sorts of outstanding experiences. This was a result of his many stage talents.

Precocious talent flourishes in the Comox Valley.

Ready in the wings is young Sheldon Faulk, a trumpeter so talented that Strathcona Symphony conductor Pippa Williams predicts he will have a brilliant future.

“Sheldon produces a clean, beautiful sound, something that usually takes years to acquire.

As with a great singing voice, this ability is something he was born with — something that comes naturally.” And she might be right. Sheldon comes from a family of musicians. His parents Ken and Violet both studied music and his five siblings have also played trumpet.

As the symphony’s principal trumpet player, Sheldon takes the honour in stride. Unlike the often extroverted personalities of most first trumpeters, the Grade 11 student, who attends Campbell River Christian School, is somewhat self-effacing and humble. He credits the SSO with much of his success.

“The atmosphere of the SSO is very nurturing, super supportive.

I want to stay with the orchestra as long as possible.”

The Black Creek-born student plans to study architecture in Alberta upon graduation, so his tenure with the SSO might be short. But while he is still with us, we can hear him play The Trumpeter’s Lullaby in the symphony’s upcoming concert, Spring Bloom.

This Leroy Anderson classic, written in 1949, features this bold, brassy instrument in a gentle, moving melody that audiences will instantly recognize.

Sheldon’s piece will be one in a bouquet of pieces chosen by Williams to welcome spring.

“I’ve assembled a mix of composers and styles that will include a few surprises,” teases the SSO conductor. “It’s a program of beautiful melodies to welcome spring. I want to offer the audience some new experiences, some musical surprises.”

The Lyric Suite by Edvard Grieg, originally written for piano, but newly arranged for orchestra, and the moody Verdi Overture to La Forza del Destino, will highlight the skills of the orchestra as they move between

“This is a challenging program, one that has pushed our players,” Williams says. “But they’ve nailed these pieces. I’m delighted with the sound and skill of these musicians.”

The SSO is a community orchestra with players ranging in age from 12 to more than 70. In its sixth year, it offers new and experienced players an opportunity to make music and share it with the community.

As with so much that happens in the Valley, the SSO is volunteer-driven and operates on a limited budget.

“It’s a privilege to work on

behalf of this orchestra,” said SSO president Michele Morton.

“We are a small community that does great things, and the SSO is an example of what can happen when people work together.

“Volunteers do everything, from setting up chairs for concerts, to providing treats at intermission, to sitting on our board of directors. Our reward is listening to the beautiful music the orchestra creates.”

Spring Bloom takes place this Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Old Church Theatre at 755 Harmston Ave. in Courtenay.

String band trio led by Martens

Music veteran playing at Joe’s parents preferred, to the Mexican and Hawaiian music that were part of the musical melting pot of the Los Angeles area.

Quickly mastering acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, and mandolin, Tim was also introduced at a young age to the rudiments of Hawaiian steel guitar by his grandfather.

Over a short period of time he became extremely fluent in Delta bottleneck and bluegrass dobro techniques as well.

Williams will grace the stage this Thursday at Courtenay’s Joe’s Garage at 115 Fifth St. in Courtenay. Tickets are available at Bop City Records in Courtenay or on a firstcome basis for more at the door.

Born in Southern California in the late 1940s, Tim Williams was both a published poet and an emerging coffeehouse phenomenon by his late teens in the mid-1960s.

His first LP recording, Blues Full Circle (produced by Arhoolie Records legend Chris Strachwitz, cover photo by Jim Marshall, liner notes by Pete Welding, and boasting appearances by L.A. blues veterans Pee Wee Crayton and George “Harmonica” Smith) came out when he was just 20.

Although most often known within the context of the blues, Williams grew up hearing (and able to play) everything from the Bob Wills and Sons of the Pioneers music his

The Brett Martens String Band returns this Thursday for its second performance this year, in response to an overwhelming number of requests to have them back.

Brett is one of Vancouver Island’s most astounding young guitar pickers; currently touring with The Marc Atkinson Trio, Caravan with Daniel Lapp, and leading his new band the Brett Martens String Band. The band follows the sound of Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hotclub de France, a musi-

cal style pioneered in the ‘30s when a very inventive gypsy living in France discovered American jazz. His name: Django Reinhardt.

Known as ‘manouche’ or ‘gypsy jazz,’ the sound is all-acoustic and rich with delightful rhythm, melody and improvisation. Because its origins are largely in France it is frequently known by the French name, “jazz manouche”, or alternatively, “manouche jazz,” even in English language sources.

Like sands through the hourglass, so flows the cash from the wallets of Canada’s top beach volleyball players as they try to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Carding money from Sport Canada’s Athlete Assistance Plan – which had been tentatively approved for 20 players – has been held back for six months by a Volleyball Canada appeal concerning a player who had been cut from the men’s team.

With the Olympic clock counting down, the players say they have hit the limit of their personal credit cards and cannot afford plane tickets to the crucial Europe qualifying tournaments for the July 27 to Aug. 12 Games.

The men’s team of Martin Reader of Comox and Josh Binstock of Toronto are among those affected by the lack of funds. Also affected are Maverick Hatch of Comox and his partner Sam Schachter.

Volleyball Canada says it will pay for the flights of beach volleyball players to Europe in the form of an interest-free loan. “If it’s an issue for them, we’ll buy their air tickets for the tournaments (in Prague, Moscow and Rome),” said Ed Drakich, Volleyball Canada’s high performance director for beach volleyball, in an article in the Globe and Mail.

“The carding [money] is on hold because of the appeal process,” said Drakich, adding that the appeal process has dragged on an unusually long time.

“The appeal process ... is internal to Volleyball Canada, and Sport Canada is unable to complete the carding process until Volleyball Canada completes its appeal process.”

Glacier Kings part ways with Butcher Kalan Anglos Special to the Record

After a frustrating finish to the 2011-2012 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season, the Comox Valley Glacier Kings have released head coach Jordan Butcher.

In his inaugural season as head coach, Butcher led the Icemen to a 21-18-3 record, with the team taking the VIJHL North Division crown for the second time in as many years.

However, despite a talentladen lineup, the Glacier Kings were upset in the first round of playoffs by the Kerry Park Islanders.

It is likely Butcher will take the next season off as far as coaching duties, even though his keen hockey sense has given him a few options.

But don’t expect the youngest head coach in Glacier Kings’ history to be off duty long.

“I’ll be back,” said Butcher. “I learned a lot and I realized I love coaching just as much as I loved playing.

“Even though I have way more to learn, I’m not going to give up. I’m going to keep learning and keep growing and doing what I love to do.”

Pool league completes another successful season The Comox Valley Pool League has wrapped up its fourth season.

Each year the interest in organized league play continues to grow and the competition is there for all skill levels.

Players say this wouldn’t be possible if they didn’t have such a great league operator in Rose Kantor. “She takes her time organizing a league that fits all skill levels of play and puts in the time running many events to help players improve their skills. She is one dedicated lady to the sport of pool in the Valley,” a CVPL player stated.

“I’m grateful for all the compliments the players give me for a job well done, but what really makes me happy is when I see all their smiling faces at the banquet cheering,” Kantor said. “I know then I’ve accomplished what I started out to do four years ago.

I couldn’t have done it without all of the players. Thank you for making my dream a reality!”

This season, playoffs were a double knockout, no handicaps for the A Division and double knockout, handicapped for the B Division.

Finishing first in the league was last year’s playoff champions Chalk-A-Holics, and going into playoffs every team was out to take them down. And take them down is what the Sharpshooters (who play out of the Avalanche) did.

Museum loves its fossils The Courtenay and District Museum takes a giant step forward this summer with assistance from Community Futures Strathcona and the Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI).

The museum will embark upon a project to enhance its position as B.C.’s premier marine fossil destination and invests in the Comox Valley’s dinosaur-age fossil resources.

The Destination Courtenay Museum and Palaeontology Centre, engages exhibition designers, fabricators and production people to activate the cumulative research and interpretation accomplished to date by museum staff, board, volunteers, scientists and historians.

With support from Community Futures in the planning and development stages, REDI BC approved $147,000, which the museum and donors will match. The museum will continue to work with Community Futures throughout the project.

“Earth scientists and amateur palaeontologists have made over 10 significant discoveries since the Puntledge elasmosaur was discovered in the late 1980s,” says museum executive director Deborah Griffiths.

“Scientists from Canada the U.S., Europe and Japan visit Courtenay to research and publish these discoveries, some of which are tylosaurus, the T-Rex of the sea and giant squid and exotic marine finds like the ratfish and vampire squid.”

Griffiths went on to say these discoveries create new opportunities for the museum to be relevant to a wider audience.

“Natural history is a popular gateway for people to learn about the ‘sum’ of local history, both natural and cultural, which has been the museum’s mandate for over 50 years. In turn, increased visits support all areas of the museum.”

With the assistance of a Courtenay hair salon, Victoria resident Sue Bishop recently donated her hair to support sick children who have lost theirs.

She raised roughly $150 for Locks of Love, a charity that assists underprivileged Canadian and American children suffering from medical hair loss. Locks of Love helps young people develop a sense of normalcy and selfesteem by providing them with high-quality wigs they couldn’t otherwise afford.

Bishop had the Velvet Underground salon chop 10 inches off her lengthy locks before dying the remainder red. The project is inspired by — and a tribute to — Bishop’s mother, Shirley Gagnon, who passed away 19 years ago after battling breast cancer.

a wig after losing her hair to chemotherapy, and Bishop hopes to share similar comforts with the children Locks of Love helps.

Only 15 when her 42-year-old mother died, Bishop nevertheless remembers her mother as an incredibly loving individual.

“She was the best mom in the world,” Bishop recalls. “All my friends called her mom.”

Gagnon frequently volunteered and attended “every school event” of Bishop’s childhood; Bishop is

certain Gagnon would endorse Locks of Love’s mission.

“She would do anything to help other people,” says Bishop, “so donating my hair feels good. It’s something to give back.”

This is not the first tribute Bishop has made in her mother’s memory. She previously donated hair to the Canadian Cancer Society, and fully intends to continue growing, cutting and donating her hair in her mother’s name – each year, if she can.

Although Bishop initially struggled to find a donor in Victoria, Velvet Underground donated a cut and colour once Bishop’s mother-in-law put her in touch with the local business.

Owner Vicki Weber, whose daughter is legally blind, says that while the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) is Velvet Underground’s

charity of choice (they’ve held several fundraisers in its support), the salon is “open to working with anyone.”

Many of Vicki’s clients have battled cancer, and Velvet Underground supports those who shave or cut their hair for charitable causes.

“I was very nervous and anxious for days before,” says Bishop, “but Vicki did an amazing job, as I hear she always does.”

Reclaim debt control – save time and money, too If you are carrying various forms of debt and making multiple, sometimes high-interest payments each month, debt consolidation could be the best way to manage your money, your time and your debt.

Here’s how and why it works: • Eliminates highinterest, high-cost loans — by consolidating car payments, education loans, lines of credit and expensive credit card payments into one, lower-interest loan.

• Lowers your monthly interest payments — by consolidating your debts, you can seek out a lower overall interest rate than the combined rate you’re currently paying on all your debts. When you’ve consolidated all your loans, you then have two choices: 1. Keep your “preconsolidation” payment amount – because you’re paying a lower interest rate on your consolidated loan, by applying the same payment amount towards your debt you will be putting extra money towards the principal debt repayment and will eliminate your debt much faster.

2. Keep your amortization or debt payback period the same — your new lower-interest consolidated loan means a reduced payment amount and the creation of additional cash flow that you can use to reach other financial life goals.

Here are a few other debt management suggestions: • Consider consolidating through a home equity loan — you’ll pay a much lower interest rate than on many other types of loans and especially your credit cards that can range from 19 to 28 per cent interest on outstanding balances.

• Keep amortization to a reasonable timeframe — aim for repayment within five years.

• A line of credit is not for everyone — although it provides added flexibility for your borrowing needs, if you have trouble sticking to a budget and typically have little money left at the end of the month to apply to your debt, a personal loan or a refinanced mortgage might be

• Keep one credit card for emergencies —

Hikers head to Seal Bay The public is invited to join Frank Hovenden of the Comox Valley Naturalists Society, who will lead a hike in Seal Bay Park this Saturday. Seal Bay is a nature park administered by the Comox Valley Regional District.

Comox fire centre expanding Comox Fire Training Centre is in the process of expanding its training facilities with the addition of a new building.

The centre will soon have four separate buildings using four very different training scenarios.

The new building is about 30 per cent complete and will include training props designed around searching for victims and rescuing firefighters in need.

Chief Gord Schreiner states: “We have spent thousands of dollars and a considerable amount of time and effort developing our training site and the training courses to go along with it. We believe we have one of the best training centres in the province.

“Our centre is well used but we still have a lot of additional untapped capacity. We are seeing more and more local departments use this training centre on a regular basis.

“We are very pleased to be able to add this addition to our site.

When completed there is not much in the line of structural firefighter training that we will not be able to do here in Comox.”

The centre is used by firefighters from all

over Vancouver Island on almost every weekend of the year. The Comox Fire Training Centre has signed a formal “service provider” agreement with the Justice Institute of BC, which will enable them to further expand the courses they offer in Comox to the benefit

of all local fire departments.

This partnership allows firefighters on Vancouver Island to receive great accredited training without having to travel to the mainland.

Water topic of discussion The Blue Communities Project is a Canada-wide initiative of the Council of Canadians that furthers the work of Water Watch coalitions across the country.

Canada and Tonga are the only two countries in the world that have not recognized the universal right to water.

Water privatization has been made a key part of the Harper government’s agenda through funding mechanisms promoting private ownership, management or financing of public services.

This Thursday, the

Comox Valley Chapter of the Council of Canadians, in co-operation with Comox Valley Water Watch, will present information on what you can do to protect our shared water resources in the face of increasing pressure to put water up for sale and privatize water resources.

Octogenarian an aging expert Author Wakan reads Thursday at Courtenay Library At the Courtenay Library this Thursday, Naomi Wakan will read from her new book, A Roller-coaster Ride: Thoughts on Aging.

Now past her 80th birthday, Wakan is well-placed to be writing about aging. Qualifying between merely being old and old-old, she considers retirement homes, elder abuse, death and the often thorny question of what to call people once they’re past retirement. With humour and honesty she looks at the disconnect between how she sees herself and how the world sees

her and concludes it’s this inner view that decides nearly everything about aging.

Wakan has written over 30 books, including Segues, Late Bloomer: On Writing Later in Life, Compositions: Notes on the written word and Book Ends: A year between the covers. Haiku: one breath poetry was an American Library Association selection.

Her essays have appeared in many magazines and anthologies and have been broadcasted on the CBC. She lives on Gabriola Island with her husband, sculptor Elias Wakan.

THE BLACK SWAN Fiddlers will reel in a crowd this Saturday to raise funds for L’Arche Comox Valley.

Black Swan brings that musical bounty to a gala put on by L’Arche Comox Valley this Saturday at the Upper Filberg Centre.

This third annual gala auction will be a fundraiser to make available a variety of residential options for men and women in our community who live with developmental disabilities. There is a severe shortage of safe, affordable housing for people with developmental disabilities on Vancouver Island.

Live and silent auctions will contain airline tickets, resort weekends, restaurant dinners, gadgets for the kitchen, the wine cellar, tools for the shop and the garden, food baskets, catering services, pet services and much more.

Food will grace every table so you can munch while you laugh and

listen or outbid your neighbours for that much sought-after item. There will be a cash bar.

This group of superb musicians is locally grown; arising over the years from the fiddle classes taught by David Stevenson at Sound Advice, for years was the community’s centre of music-making.

Many across the Valley will have heard them at Zocalo, the Farmers’ Market and many

other venues.

That’s why police agencies are waging a focused assault on speeding and aggressive driving. Police are hitting problem roads and intersections this month to drive home the idea that tailgating, speeding and high-risk driving won’t be tolerated.

It’s the kind of driving behaviour that frustrates motorists most on a daily basis – someone riding too close on the highway or weaving in and out of traffic, running yellows and reds and generally behaving in ways that ramps up the road rage.

If homeowners are going to call the police about something in their neighbourhood, more often than not it’s about speeding and racing.

For police, combating reckless driving is a labour-intensive and time-consuming task. Unlike roadblocks where officers can wait for drunk drivers to come to them, traffic patrol officers need to witness and document speeding and dangerous driving.

But it’s a worthwhile effort. Culled from police data, ICBC attributes 60 per cent of all crashes at intersections to speed, distracted and inattentive driving, and ignoring the right of way.

On Vancouver Island, that drops to 50 per cent, but police link 29 traffic fatalities on average per year on the Island to speeding and reckless driving.

The annual campaign against high-risk driving picks up across the province in May, and more people than usual are being hit with tickets. People need to remember police aren’t the enemy – traffic officers are trying to make the roads safer and more civil for all.

Drinking and driving remains a high-profile problem and by definition is risky driving. But it’s the purely aggressive, high-risk driving that impacts our day to day lives en route to work or school or for recreation.

We encourage police and ICBC to help keep the pressure on bad drivers year round.

People will die on the water Dear editor, I am writing to Prime Minister Harper and MP John Duncan to express my concern and absolute outrage at the proposed closing of the Coast Guard stations in Vancouver, Comox and Tofino.

The proposed elimination of services these Coast Guard stations provide will result in the deaths of Canadians.

I have lived my life in Vancouver and Comox and had friends who died at sea in storms. I have watched marine gas stations blow up in the Vancouver Harbour, boats explode, pleasure craft lose their engines, people fall overboard — you name it, it’s happened.

What has always reduced the number of lives lost is the ability of the Coast Guard to get to a situation quickly.

In the case of Vancouver harbour, there is no way anything will get from Richmond to Vancouver harbour in a timely manner, except maybe to pick up the bodies, but certainly not to save people. The Kitsilano Coast Guard station is called out 300 times a year. Who is going to pick up the work if they no longer are there?

Vancouver, Comox and Tofino all have small pleasure craft and wind surfers. What will happen when they run into danger and need assistance?

New equipment that observes will not save them. The only thing that saves lives at sea are fast boats — close at hand —

and qualified people.

Now as I understand the media reports, these closures are all in aid of saving $11 million.

My question is, which one of you gentlemen will be going to tell the families of people who die it was because you wanted to save $11 million?

This weekend, the media reported Canada has spent $28 billion in Afghanistan and PM Harper has agreed to have Canada pay an additional $110 million each year.

If Canada’s deficit is so serious I would suggest we get out of any overseas actions next week, if not sooner. It will save an enormous amount of money.

These monies can then be spent paying down the deficit and saving Canadians who get into trouble at sea. Oh, and I’d suggest we forget about those new jets or at a min. get something a lot less expensive.

I understand our tax dollars can only go so far. However, these tax dollars are from Canadian citizens and I would suggest we spend them on Canadians and the services they need.

Editor should accept responsibility Dear editor, If, in the editorial world, the measure of a man is the size of his “retraction,” Mark Allan, your editor, is truly a small man.

However, if the content of his “retraction” is the measure, he is no man at all.

Mark Allan, editor, rather than take responsibility for his completely false and defamatory editorial blamed the entire work of fiction on third-party information, that of course, being his young reporter Erin, who was in attendance at the meeting.

He has embarrassed the entire hard-working staff at the Record from the publisher on down to cub reporters. Mark Allan should take his soap box, stand up in front of all the staff, and apologize for his irresponsible behaviour.

I would also hope that in the future when Mark decides to write hurtful lies about anybody he does the research needed to ensure the accuracy of his drivel. The Record and the Comox Valley citizens deserve better.

He’s feeling remorse Dear editor, Regarding the media attention my name has been getting recently, I hope that you will kindly allow me an opportunity to express my remorse about the charges that have been levied against me.

Ottawa spending skewed Dear editor, Winston Churchill, no stranger to folly himself, nevertheless had occasional fits of wisdom.

Churchill once said that most men stumble across the truth but then pick themselves up and walk away.

Complaining, the English call it whinging, whining, is what we call someone else’s concern. A baby for a bottle, a citizen for some sanity, a taxpayer for accountability, history is replete with humanities inability to empathize, to consider another’s point of view.

To compare eagles with hornets, jet planes with a bird, to put to much stake in our need to prepare for an aeronautic Armageddon is hyperbolic and a little absurd. To juxtapose loopy jets against cutting services for vets, as an argument — it’s not a very strong one.

Nine pretty Snowbirds flying in formation, is it unpatriotic to ask what this operation is costing our nation? Nine pilots (at least), nine ground crew, winter storage, and summer billets, fuel at least triple the price of 2002. I bet the cost is more than a pension or two.

I may be wrong but I believe we have just come through the kind of financial crisis that occurs about as regularly as world wars do, and that almost all our governments are struggling with deficit, too.

The federal government is cutting the Department of Veteran Affairs staff at the end of Canada’s longest war; isn’t the end of a war when veterans might be most numerous and most in need?

Why would they do this, why would they cut short, shoot down the support of our service people?

Could the motive be as base as money?

That’s right, the generals and the ministers, in pursuit of the sinister, thought it was a good idea for our

forces to invade Kandahar driving the Iltis, a glorified Volkswagen Thing. They think that risking pilots’ lives in decrepit, after-burning barnstormers makes our nation strong.

Is it at all possible that the generals might be wrong?

If I said that the Snowbirds cost $20 million a year, is that a wild speculation? Multiply it by a decade and it becomes $200 million. And the price goes up every year.

Just to get this straight this is not about noise and I’m not whining, just wondering, pondering, and perhaps baffled enough to pose the question. Just what are these demonstration teams worth?

And to the neo-lemming chorus that calls almost any question seditious, I find your jolly justifications comically delicious. Attacking the messenger is as old as time; it seems to tickle us humans like the rush of rhyme.

I’m only asking as a proud taxpayer, I’ve put my money on Canada almost since I’ve had any worth.

If reluctant sometimes, it’s only because I suspect the governments’ appetite for my money.

It’s hard to get figures from the Department of National Defence because as usual our government employs stealth when they are spending our taxed wealth.

For instance, how much do they pay to train a cadet glider pilot?

Isn’t this something private flight schools could do, and perhaps cheaper? Why does our anti-HST populace buy it?

In a century where we have drones that fly themselves 24/7 in the skies over Afghanistan, kill AlQaeda leaders in Pakistan, with a tap on a keyboard; drones can be bought at the Source with a credit card, unless your credit is due.

HATS OFF TO the Fanny Bay fundraising committee for their Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea and Fashion Show. It was a hit! It was well attended by over 100 folks, some who came from as far away as Sooke and Campbell River.

Buses from Glacier View Lodge and Cumberland Lodge brought many elder “babes” to the event to see the fashions from their past. Linda Hargreaves’ beautiful collection of fashions, which included everything from funwear to evening gowns, was truly amazing. Every outfit was complete with jewelry, shoes, hat, gloves and a purse. From the little black swimsuit number circa 1900 to the “Titanic” dress with parasol and button shoes every outfit sparkled as they were modelled by a great bunch of gals, who at first were a wee bit reticent to parade in front of strangers, but after seeing the immense effort put forth by Linda and the “haute couture” quality of the collection, the models were enthusiastic, stylish, chic, and graceful. The tables were decorated with an assortment of summer flowers and fancy tablecloths with a spectacular assortment of tea cups and saucers some loaned and some donated to the hall for this event, by Norma Shelley, Erna Smith, Nancy Dear, Inger Hyatt, Marg Green and others. Emily Schroeder put together a Hat Display using a “rainbow” of Linda’s hats that wouldn’t be part of the fashion show but were deemed too beautiful and of an historic nature not to be seen. Carol Arthur’s brass cherub lamp with stained glass “palm tree” shade stood proudly amongst Emily’s colourful hat boxes and Linda’s collection of feather, mink, wool, be-ribboned straw, Mother of the Bride, Queen Mother’s, and felt

Growing good moods in the garden Looking something up recently, a headline caught my eye ... “Grow a Good-Mood Garden.”

How can you not have a “good mood” in the garden?

Intrigued, I deviated from my original quest to read further. It was about plant varieties that promote “good moods” through their very chemical makeup.

Vegetables like Swiss chard, for instance.

Scientists have determined that magnesium is an essential nutrient for producing a biochemical reaction in your brain that elevates energy levels.

Magnesium content is over 37 per cent in Swiss chard.

Eating tomatoes for their lycopene in the skins. This is a phytochemical that has been proven to reduce the build-up of pro-inflammatory compounds linked to depression... among its other good benefits.

Oregano...they have found many of its chemical compounds effectively combat fatigue, anxiety and depression. Run your hand over a patch of oregano and breathe deeply. Uplifting!

There were other plants listed, all capable of boosting one into a better mood. Very interesting, but time to get back to the object of my original search.

Hemerocallis gall midge. Contarina quinquenotata to give its proper name. The pest that attacks the flowering buds on our daylilies before they open.

My search was for any new information after talking to someone recently about daylilies and pests.

For those who are not familiar with this insect (although it has been increasingly prolific on the B.C. coast since about 2001) this midge is a tiny (2mm), grey-brown fly. The

LESLIE COX adults will be emerging from the soil any day now. Pretty much as soon as your first daylilies start to bloom.

With a lifespan as short as 72 hours, they quickly mate and the female lays her eggs on the flower buds. (Only

daylily buds, luckily.) The larvae hatch in about two weeks’ time and burrow their way inside where they cannot be reached.

Spotting shrivelled and deformed daylily buds are your clues to whether you have this pest or not.

Deformed buds are caused by the larvae feeding on the tender insides. Pick one, break it open and you will spot tiny, grey-white grubs wriggling to

escape the daylight.

My search was to see how the Royal Horticultural Society was making out with their pesticide (horrors!) eradication trials they began in 2009. Nothing definitive to report at the end of the 2010 season, so they continued the trial into 2011.

I did not find any posted results for last year.

To my way of thinking, because the larvae are inside the flower bud where they cannot

effectively be reached by any pesticide... which we are banned from using anyways... it would make more sense to devise a pheromone trap to hang in the garden when the adult gall midge flies are emerging. Attract the males to a trap and your problem is largely solved. The females cannot do anything by themselves. (I think only aphids are born pregnant.)

But for now...the best line of defence against the gall midge is to hand-pick any suspiciously infected daylily buds. Seal them in a plastic bag and garbage them. Do not compost them! Due diligence will keep this pest under control.

In our favour, because of the timing of when the adults emerge, it is typically the earlier flowering varieties that are most affected. So, as much as you may be annoyed at the look of your early yellow and tawny-orange daylilies, they do work fairly well as a “trap plant”, keeping your later blooming

Allergy-free planting in your yard Hippocrates advised his students to study the winds and ecology of an area in which they planned to practice. This advice is as important today as ever before and not just in the field of medicine; although the lack of botanical consideration in modern medicine has given rise to many pharmaceutical stop-gap measures valued in the billions of dollars per year. Good for some but not for allergy sufferers.

The landscape designer, landscape architect and horticulturalist need to be more savvy in the ecological knowledge of plant species/types causing severe allergic reactions but, ideally, so should the average gardener.

After all, you spend most of your time in your home and garden, so make it the most comfortable place it can be.

Planting shrubs/trees/ grasses that are low on the allergen scale will ensure that your garden time is rash, hay fever and asthma free (or certainly reduced).

Typically, dioceious plants are the biggest culprits. The male of the species produces so much airborne pollen in order to ‘find’ the female of the species. Solution? Plant the female of the same species. Yes, you will end up with the fruit (assuming there’s a male around) on the ground to clean up in the fall, but isn’t that so much better than sneezing all summer?

Choosing flowers such as roses or apple blossoms is also a good way to go. These flowers are bisexual (or complete) meaning they have both sex parts all inside the same flowers. As such, the pollen doesn’t have far to travel, resulting in reduced pollen output into the surround-

ing environment (you).

Monoecious plants, having both male and females flowers on the same plant, are not necessarily the answer though. Plants such as oak and cypress are two such plant species which cause a great volume of airborne pollens in their search for neighbouring female flowers.

Another factor to

consider is those plant species that rely on insects for pollenation.

These plants generally cause fewer allergies.

The solution to the problem of allergens in the garden is not easily simplified. There are many criteria to consider which cannot be covered adequately here. But, in order to get you started, here are two suggestions to

get you on your way to an allergy-free backyard: Make it a all-female garden – simple and it works – the only problem here is the wildlife consideration (food for the little critters), so planting some low allergen, completeflowered plants that can set fruit should be included in any garden (in consideration of our bird friends).

Choose plants with large, very showy, lightly scented flowers – ensure the male flower parts are either few in number or deeply recessed within the blossom – these will

be insect pollinated plants types that rarely cause pollen problems.

One final note, in the “darndest things one finds out sometimes” category: I was looking up the growth habit of Saruma henryi. A friend gave us this lovely specimen and I wanted to give it the best possible siting in my garden.

Very surprised to

find out its common name is upright wild ginger. The plant looks nothing like my other wild gingers, except for its heart-shaped leaves perhaps. The yellow flowers, fuzzy leaves and its height are all atypical of gingers... as is its second bloom period later in the season.
