The Strathcona Regional District is re-evaluating a plan to connect areas south of the Campbell River to the city’s sewer system.

Over the past month, an engineer has been studying the Area D sewer project in order to update plans that were drafted five years ago.

“It’s been a few years so we want to make sure our costs are as accurate as they can be,” said

Russ Hotsenpiller, community services manager with the Strathcona Regional District. “We’re working on what configuration is the most efficient for the actual system.”

That includes analyzing where connection lines might be located

and how many pump stations are needed.

Phase one of the project would connect 172 homes in the Ocean Grove and Crawford Loop neighbourhoods to the City of Campbell River’s sewer system. Subsequent phases are supposed to extend the

Sewers: some residents have given up hope Continued from A1 for 2009 and is valued at $5.1 million.

Affected residents voted in a referendum in 2006 and voted in favour (52 per cent) of the regional district borrowing $9,250, for the collection and disposal of sewage.

Properties benefiting from the sewer service would then cover those costs in either one lump sum or spread out over a 25-year period.

The regional district then applied for and received $3.4 million in provincial and federal grant funding for the estimated $5.1 million project.

But trying to acquire

that funding and securing an agreement with the city has caused delays, Hotsenpiller said.

The city submitted a sewer connection proposal to the regional district on Oct. 10, which it thought was in line with what electors voted for in the referendum. “ L o o k i n g at t h e numbers, it’s generally in the range of my understanding of what was approved at the referendum,” said City Manager Andy Laidlaw last month.

But Hotsenpiller said the price tag was too high.

“The initial offer

from Campbell River was significantly more, that’s what’s led us to look at the investment again from the engineer’s point of view to make sure we’re apples to apples,” Hotsenpiller said. “Once we come to an understanding with Campbell River, we’ll have to go back to the community and see if there an appetite for this, are the costs appropriate or not.”

Some residents eagerly awaiting the sewer system, such as Karen Van Male, have given up hope the project will ever come to fruition because it’s been six years since the referendum with

no targeted date for construction in sight.

“We have had three groups down here and nothing flies,” Van Male said. “Just a lot of hard put-in hours and nothing comes of it. Due to a lack of work...I don’t think this project will continue.”

But Hotsenpiller said he thinks the regional district is getting close.

He expects the engineer’s report to come back within the next two to three weeks, and shortly after that the regional district plans to meet with the city.

Following those discussions, Hotsenpiller said there will be a public open house for affected residents.

“We’re operating on a ‘what’s next’ basis and I know there hasn’t been any new news for a long time going out to the community, but I think we’re getting really close to providing some more information to people.”

Salmon farmers work together on virus management Prompt action and information sharing has been the response of BC’s salmon farmers to news that a case of Infectious Haematopoietic Necrosis (IHN) has been identified on Vancouver Island’s west coast.

Re presentatives from all three Atlantic salmon far ming companies have come together to co-ordinate approaches to mitigating risk factors in containing the virus, in adding testing on a wide range of farms and supporting the affected company.

“These companies are paying close attention

to the situation and moved immediately to assess their current situation and prepare for steps to come,” said Mary Ellen Walling, Executive Director, BC Salmon Farmers Association. “The action by all members has been thorough, decisive and organized.”

On May 14, Mainstream Canada detected IHN virus as part of their routine fish health inspections at their Dixon Bay farm. The site has been officially quarantined by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and the company has begun to depopulate

the site.

IHN virus is naturally carried by Pacific salmon, trout and herring, and studies show that they have a natural resistance to the virus and rarely develop illness or disease.

Atlantic salmon however are highly susceptible to the virus, and when the virus is spread from wild sources to farm-raised Atlantic salmon, it can be lethal to the farmed fish.

BCSFA’s members who far m Atlantic salmon have all signed a viral disease management plan, which has been implemented.

This plan outlines communications, shared resources as well as plans for disposal and follow-up. All of these procedures are targeted at limiting any spread of the virus.

“This is definitely concerning news for our members – but they recognize that it’s critical to work with each other and with regulators to ensure that potential impacts are minimized,” said Walling.

The Dixon Bay finding is the first case of IHN in BC’s salmon farms since 2003. IHN poses no human health risk.

Campbell River could get a new library if the city can make Vancouver Island Regional Library an offer it can’t refuse.

The organization is in the process of trying to update its facilities.

“Campbell River effectively only serves 44 per cent of the population,” said Adrian Maas, director of finance for Vancouver Island Regional Library, during a delegation to council May 15.

Campbell River is sixth on a list of 13 urban libraries to be either renovated or re-built. The process could be sped up if the city or Strathcona Regional District could provide Vancouver Island Regional Library with some property.

“Lake Cowichan donated land in order to fast-track things and we’re having discussions with a couple of other municipalities,” Maas said. “Fast tracking is a matter of political will. If you present your case we’ll get it in front of the board and the board will consider your agreement on a case-by-case basis.”

Maas said the Campbell River library is 9.683 square feet, undersized for the area it serves.

“Based on the population in 2009...the library should be 21,000 square feet. If you take a look into the next few years, we should really be looking at 31,000 square feet.”

Vancouver Island Regional Library set new standards in 2010 that its facilities should be .60 square feet per capita. The new Facility Master Plan was created by the regional library board as a result of strategic planning that

began five years ago.

“We went to the communities during the process and asked about their expectations of local libraries,” said Rosemary Bonanno, executive director of Vancouver Island Regional Library. “We got almost the same response everywhere and that was that they wanted bigger, better, more. The facilities did not support the customer’s vision of a 20th century facility.”

The study revealed that libraries are too old, overcrowded, and in some cases inaccessible. It also found that most branches suffer from deferred maintenance because of inadequate budgets.

To remedy the situation, in 2010 the board recommended a funding increase over 10 years of 1.25 per cent for facilities, one per cent for maintenance and repairs, furniture, fixtures, and equipment.

Maas said Vancouver Island Regional Library would prefer to own its library facilities, rather than lease them, to keep costs down.

Coun. Ron Kerr said he would like to see the city take action on securing a new library.

“I think this is a real opportunity here,” Kerr said. “Unfortunately council in the past hasn’t seen fit to move on it and we’re probably at the back of the line for a new building.”

Bonanno reminded council that Campbell River is sixth on the list.

“You’re not that far behind,” she said. “If you get a funding model in place, that will expedite the process.”

Maas confirmed that Campbell River could move up in the ranking with an offer of land or a new funding model.

As a naturopathic doctor that’s what Pincott’s work is all about – warding off illness and disease before it strikes.

“We’re not waiting until people get sick,” Pincott says. “We prevent people from getting sick. It’s a safe, effective, and proactive approach.”

Pincott sees patients with an array of medical issues – from cancer to high blood pressure.

“I treat everything, all sorts of conditions,” Pincott says. “I have people coming in because they’re infertile, I’ve treated kids with attention deficit, I’ve treated kids with autism.

“I treat men with prostate problems, you name it.”

Pincott has several patients with asthma.

She works with them to help them reduce their dependency on their inhalers, prevent chest infections, and help them with allergies – measures to thwart an asthma attack.

“They may have a propensity for asthma but we can definitely help make them feel better,” Pincott says.

“We teach the underlying causes of disease.

For example, with asthma, it’s dairy (products).

Pincott says people who come to see her are typically motivated to put in the work at home because her services are all out of pocket, and not covered by the BC medical plan.

She says the greatest barrier to her field is education.

People are often not aware there is an alternative to traditional medicine and their regular medical doctor.

“We’re a tiny profession compared to the medical profession, so that’s what we’re up against – trying to educate people,”

Pincott says. “I’m big on the idea that the public doesn’t have to choose. You can do your regular medical approach plus do this.

It’s complementary so they don’t have to decide to do one or the other.”

In an effort to reach out to people, Pincott has several binders full of educational newspaper clippings and a bulletin board full of health pamphlets in her waiting room, which she calls an “educational centre.”

Pincott encourages people to come in and find out more about naturopathic medicine.

She also has her office open to the public every Tuesday for free candida testing and taste testing.

The candida test is a five-minute, electrodermal acupuncture that gives the doctor an idea of a person’s intestinal health. It also determines how sensitive a person is to yeast growth in the gut.

The taste testing

gives people the opportunity to come into Pincott’s office and try nutritional supplements such as cod liver oil.

During last week’s Naturopathic Medicine Week, Pincott had more than 50 people come through her office for the free candida and taste testing.

“Basically my office is always open for people to drop in and to find out what we’re all about,” Pincott says.

Vendors selected for mobile MRI equipment and trailer Mobile Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) service for patients in Campbell River, the Comox Valley, Port Alberni and Duncan is getting closer with the selection of Philips Healthcare to provide the MRI system and Advance Mobil-

ity Specialty Vehicles to provide the trailer that will transport the equipment between these Vancouver Island communities.

T h e Va n c o u v e r Island Health Authority received three qualified responses to the RFP. An Island-

wide selection committee that included radiologist representation from the four communities set to receive mobile MRI service participated in the vender selection. The proposals were evaluated based on technology, image quality, ease

of use, user references, service support and price.

“This will be the first system of its kind to be installed in a trailer in North America,” said Dr. John Mathieson, VIHA Medical Director of Medical Imaging.

“The image quality is

absolutely superb.”

VIHA had anticipated the start date for the mobile service would be summer 2012.

However, the vendor must go through an internal certification process before releasing the equipment to ensure quality and

safety standards are met. Delivery is now slated for October 1, 2012. The vendor will provide an interim mobile MRI system should there be delays beyond the Oct. 1 delivery date.

“The selection committee unanimously

felt it was better to accept a short delay in service start up in order to get the nextgeneration technology,” said Mathieson.

Final purchase price was approximately $1.9 million for the MRI system including the trailer.

A group of cyclists protesting the Northern Gateway Pipeline which they say could wipe out B.C.’s fisheries pedalled into Campbell River Friday.

Eleven activists from Parksville, who cycled from Campbell River to Victoria over a span of four days, set up shop at Robert Ostler Park to spread their message.

“We want to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the Norther n Gateway pipeline proposal because there’s so many flaws in their proposal,” said Sharon Farinha, one of the organizers of Cycle to Protect Our Coast which wound up yesterday at the legislature in Victoria.

Farinha said an oil spill, similar to what happened in the Gulf of Alaska in 1989 and the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, could destroy our fisheries and the environment as a whole.

“What we stand to lose is far greater than what we stand to gain, which is a few jobs,” she said.

Myst de Vance, a cyclist on the Cycle to Protect Our Coast tour, said the initiative was not only to raise awareness but to encourage people to take part in the fight to protect B.C.’s coast.

The group also collected signatures on two different petitions that it presented to the legislature after wrapping up its tour on Tuesday afternoon.

Free education comes at a price Free cradle-to-grave public education would be a great idea if we could afford it.

Education is expensive and, in some cases, students should be expected to pay for it. After four years of providing free tuition to graduated adults seeking to upgrade their high school education, the province is now whittling down the number of courses it will offer at no charge.

More specifically, the province has determined that it will only pay for literacy, math and competency courses for students learning English as a second language and English 12, Biology 12, Math 11 and 12, Chemistry 11 and Physics 11.

The idea is that these are the courses that are most sought after by students seeking to upgrade their education. Students who wish to take history, law or accounting, which could be seen more as electives than core academics, will now have to pay for them.

The province has also moved to withhold partial funding unless courses are completed, and while we don’t know all the details — and there could be some costly fine print for school districts unless attention is paid to this issue — the principle is sound.

Taxpayers should only pay for courses that people sign up for and complete.

Adding English 11, Communications 11 and 12, Physics 12, and Chemistry 12 to the list of free core courses is also a good idea because they, too, are needed for university or college. But until educators are prepared to work for free, students will have to contribute in some way to their own education.

Get your heads out of sand According to Money Sense, Campbell River ranked number 175 out of 180 best places to live in Canada in November 2011. Three other British Columbia city/ towns were listed in the bottom 10 with Campbell River.

It was noted that Campbell River had high unemployment, extremely high housing prices, and is trying to re-invent itself as a retiree community, winning a green award.

The idea that the community can survive on retiree money is wrong thinking. Retiree money is finite meaning it doesn’t grow, it only depletes. The first dollar in any economy comes from the land. Resource dollars form the base of an economic pyramid. Campbell River, like much of Canada has an upside down pyramid ready to collapse upon itself.

Decision makers for the community continue to keep their heads in the sand like the proverbial ostrich, blind to the reality the majority of the townspeople live with daily: struggling to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table more often resulting in an outflow of workers making room for retirees and the destitute.

Committed my own small act of ecological defiance

There I was approaching one of my favourite spots in the Beaver Lodge Lands when I started to notice something was different.

Did the route down to the creek look more trampled, more like a trail? Or was I just imagining it? The point about having a favourite spot is to get to know all about it’s nuances, its changes through the seasons. Bushes go from bare limbs to budding leaves and eventually to summer berries.

Ferns unroll themselves from the forest floor into first fiddleheads and then swords or brackens. The expansions and contractions of the seasons is an unending process that you soon become attuned to.

The creek swells, overflows, retreats. Salmon fry await the fall

rains. The cycles keep rolling.

Detecting something was different without it being obvious was a good thing. That something was different, however, had an ominous feeling to it.

This part of the creek is on the road to rehabilitation after years of heavy use as a crossing, first for hikers and then – as the mountain bike boom hit – for spoked wheels and nobby tires.

The crucial creek bed and the sloping banks suffered as the trail slashed across the streambed. But that was stopped after the Beaver Lodge Forest was protected in 1993 and the trail was decommissioned.

This beautiful stretch of stream rebounded and my discovery of it provided a respite from the outside world.

As I got closer to the stream it became obvious that something had changed. Drastically. Set up on the bank of the stream was a log crib filled in with soil to create a jump for someone’s mountain bike. The landing spot was obviously the gravel bar in the middle of the streambed. the soil for the jump was provided by the muddy river bank where a four-foot hole had been dug.

I was outraged.

So, I tore apart the bike jump and scattered the logs. I tried to cover the approaching trail with as much forest debris as I could to “re-decommission” the trail. Thankfully, the winter storms provided plenty of branches.

After half an hour’s work I was moderately pleased with the results.

For a finishing touch, I took a stick and scratched into the gravel bed the letters S-A-L-M-O-N to explain why I did this. This was prime salmonrearing habitat and the reason the crossing was decommissioned in the first place. It couldn’t return to being a bike crossing.

I don’t have any problem with bikes in the BLL. In fact, I rode my bike to get there that day. But I got off of it at the trail and walked the rest of the way.

I don’t even have a problem with bikers setting up jumps and obstacle courses but do it away from the creek and get permission. There is room for all to use the Beaver Lodge Lands but you can’t just go building things wherever you want.

While property assessments have dropped significantly, property taxes are increasing to preserve the image of being an award-winning green community for old people to enjoy spending frugally on services that pay their employees minimum wages.

After 25 years of living, raising my children, and growing old myself in Campbell River, I am unable to afford living in this community of many distinctions because it lacks economic development to support my education and skill base and being overqualified for minimum wage work. Campbell River doesn’t even have enough minimum wage jobs to support its youth who are in competition with aging and immigrant workers for those few minimum wage positions that require the worker to first spend money attaining certifications to have the privilege of making next to nothing.

On the other end of the scale is the travesty of losing the mill due to an exaggerated sense of entitlement by the union leaving Campbell River with only aquaculture as the major resource employer whose economic arms reached throughout the entire community – the same community that allows the spread of hostility toward aquaculture causing its product to be too expensive to be viable in the world market.

The only green award I want to see and Campbell River should be working toward is the green of economic development before Campbell River is just one big green cemetery. Haul your heads out of the sand and start working to rebuild our economic strength while there still exists people young enough willing to do the work.

I find it very depressing that there appears to be no path to labour unrest in our schools.

Judging by the public spanking issued – by the president of the Campbell River District Teachers Association nonetheless – in response to a column using dark humor to express concern for the impact of BCTF actions on the children we entrust to their members I can only imagine what language and tone is used around the privacy of the negotiating table.

I can empathise with Mme. Thompson, I have no doubt that being around so much negativity can take its toll, but snapping at shadows only makes things worse, so maybe it’s time to step back and look at some of the reasons the BCTF is not receiving universal support.

I tend to be leery of BCTF statements, having been a student during a teachers strike, and a parent during the most recent illegal teachers strike, where children learned that it’s okay to break the law if you disagree with it. What I have learned, is that they (the BCTF), always say, “It’s for the students” and “smaller class sizes” and what always happens is, they get their raises, they get their signing bonuses ($3,000 last time), and despite increased funding, class sizes get bigger, and student services get cut. During the last decade, the SD 72 budget

has increased by six per cent even though student enrollment is down by about 2,000 students. During the same time, teachers’ salaries and benefits have gone from under 60 per cent to over 70 per cent of the budget. That number does not include principals, vice principals, clerical, janitorial, or maintenance staff. It’s statically evident who is gaining and who is suffering.

Pick your poison; virtually every sector of our economy has been hit hard. In the same paper as the editorial, you can read about people risking jail to steal copper from the corpse of what was our largest employer (perhaps to buy school supplies or pay for a field trip), even the good news around here is kinda sad.

The new parkland we have, used to be a large sawmill with a shake and shingle mill next door, the parkland exists not because the operations were relocated, just closed.

There are parents out there that toil in toxic atmospheres, enduring temperature extremes that would crack corning ware, and bear the scars of witnessing death and dismemberment amongst their coworkers (sometimes, you get an extra day off without pay, after such an incident). Of the folks in the private sector who have not had to relocate or retrain, many of them, unionised or not, have been forced to take substantial wage and benefit cuts just to keep their jobs.

This current school year, in SD 72, of a $50.5 million budget, $45 million is going to salaries and benefits. It doesn’t take a math prof to realise that with declining revenues, and increased costs, the buck has to stop somewhere. If 65 grand plus benefits ain’t enough for ya, I hear Fort Mac is real purdy, and you can still summer here.

Call it teacher bashing, call it class envy, call it whatever you want, but use some self-reflection, and please realise that there are reasons, and to many, they are valid.

I know many teachers, and the vast majority seem to be decent, reasonable people, and I find it hard to believe that such a defensive, reactionary, and divisive lady as Mme. Thompson is speaking your real positions. To the teachers of Campbell River – have the courage to stand up to your union leaders, and do what’s right for the children,

your public image, and the overburdened taxpayers that you rely on.

Make this a teachable moment, show compassion during lean times, and let the children see what sacrifice and community are all about.

While it’s true that the workers of this province are as solid as rocks, the stones are tired and worn from giving so much blood.

I request my name not be published, as I have witnessed and experienced the retribution leveled upon children after a parent has dared to publicly express a difference of opinion.

Why I am in favor of the Raven coal project The public should be aware by now that British Columbia, has some of the toughest environmental regulations in the world, thereby protecting against the desecration of our environment.

I use the word desecration because I believe most British Columbians hold that the environment is sacred; it is just as true to mining people as it is to others of the public.

We (mining people) live in the communities. We breed the air and drink the water; and are just as concerned that our children inherit a clean environment as the rest of the public.

Bears are out so be Bear Aware

With bears seeking out non-natural food sources, Environment Minister Terry Lake is spreading the word to British Columbians to do what they can to control bear attractants and reduce conflicts with bears.

The main cause of human-wildlife conflicts in B.C. is access to non- natural food sources. Bears that learn how to get at exposed pet food, ripe f r u i t , i m p r o p e rl y stored garbage, dirty barbecues or composts become conditioned and will continue to return to the area.

British Columbians are encouraged to prevent human-bear conflicts by adopting the following practices: ■ Ke e p g a r b a g e secured in a bear-resistant container or in the house, garage or shed until pick-up day and return the containers to the secure site once they are emptied.

■ Pick ripe and fallen fruit daily and remove any unused fruit trees.

■ Use bird feeders only in winter.

■ Keep the ground

free of seeds and nuts.

■ Clean the barbecue grill after each use, and store it in a secure area.

■ Bring pet food dishes inside and store the pet food inside.

■ Do not add meat products or uncooked food to compost. Turn it regularly and keep it covered.

■ If residents spot a bear, they are advised to remain calm, keep away from the bear and bring children and pets indoors, if possible.

■ People should never approach a bear and should not run from it, as bears can move very quickly.

■ Once a bear has left the area, residents should check their yards to ensure no attractants are available.

The Conservation Officer Service (COS) is the primary responder to human-wildlife conflicts where there is a risk to public safety, conservation concerns or where significant property damage has occurred.

Recent changes to the Wildlife Act give

Conservation Officers the ability to issue a $230 ticket or notice for a court appearance to residents who do not secure attractants.

Residents who intentionally leave out items that attract dangerous wildlife could also be issued a Dangerous Wildlife Protection Order. Failure to comply with an order carries a $575 fine.

Over the past five years in B.C., an average of 600 black bears have been destroyed each year, while 93 were relocated.

Bear Aware is an educational program managed by the British Columbia Conservation Foundation that is designed to prevent and reduce conflicts between people and bears.

DEATHS KOCH, ROBERT (Bob), January 23, 1933 Thursday, May 17, 2012 A long time resident of Campbell River since 1957, he was the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bobâ&#x20AC;? in Bobâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hardware and then could later be found helping customers at West Fraser / Revelstoke. He loved the outdoors, canoeing/kayaking, ďŹ shing and camping with his friends and family. For a period of 10 years from 1989 until his health prevented him from riding, he could be seen peddling his bicycle around town, raising funds in support of the BC Lung Association.

Bob was a person who loved life and he always had a big smile for everyone. He invested his time and energy in his family, friends and community.

Bob was deeply loved by his wife Shirley, children Steven and Susan, and Shirleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s children Bruce, Sandy and Cheryl. He was a loving grandfather to 8 grandchildren and still on friendly terms with his ďŹ rst wife Dorothy. He leaves behind many great memories that will ensure that his contribution to life lives on and he will be remembered forever by his big, friendly smile.

A memorial was held at St. Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s church, 34 S. Alder St, at 11 AM on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, where we will all gathered to send him off on his next big bicycle ride.

Do you have freshly plucked weeds with no place to put them?

Maybe it’s time for composting with the Campbell River composter rebate program.

Fifty $50 composter rebates are now available on a first-come, first-served basis for Campbell River residents.

The rebate program is available for any type of composter purchased from the CSWM

compost education centre in Campbell River or any retailer within or outside of Campbell River.

The rebate program is sponsored by Comox S t r a t h c o n a Wa s t e Management Service (CSWM) and runs from May 1 to July 31, 2012 or while supplies last (limit of one rebate per household).

“Our regional landfills are nearly full, and organic matter makes up about 35 per cent of household garbage that we send to the dump. It’s also a source

of methane gas, one of the most potent greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change,” says Coun.

Larry Samson. “This new program encourages more citizens to compost kitchen scraps and to be part of protecting our environment by helping to reduce greenhouse gases and the amount of waste going to the landfill as well as adding nutrients to our soil.”

As part of the rebate program, a free Learn to Compost workshop

will take place Wednesday, June 6 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the CSWM compost education centre at 228 South Dogwood Street (across from Strathcona Gardens recreation complex).

Residents interested in participating in the rebate program will need a numbered voucher and a voucher form from the City of Campbell River. Send the completed voucher form along with the original receipt for the composter purchase and a photo of the purchaser with the newly

installed composter to the City to have the rebate processed.

Sixteen-year-old trumps the Strathcona Symphony KATHERINE GIBSON SPECIAL TO THE MIRROR

S

heldon Faulk is a trumpeter so talented that Strathcona Symphony conductor Pippa Williams predicts he will have a brilliant future.

“Sheldon produces a clean, beautiful sound, something that usually takes years to acquire. As with a great singing voice, this ability is something he was born with — something that comes naturally,” Williams said.

And she might be right. Faulk comes from a family of musicians. His parents Ken and Violet both studied music and his five siblings have also played trumpet.

As the symphony’s principal trumpet player, Faulk takes the honour in stride.

Unlike the often extraverted personalities of most first trumpeters, the Grade 11 student, who attends Campbell River Christian School, is somewhat self-effacing and humble. He credits the

SSO with much of his success.

“The atmosphere of the SSO is very nurturing, super supportive. I want to stay with the orchestra as long as possible,” Faulk said.

The Black Creekborn student plans to study architecture in Alberta upon graduation, so his tenure with the SSO might be short. But while he is still with them, you can hear him play The Trumpeter’s Lullaby in the symphony’s upcoming concert, Spring Bloom. This Leroy Anderson classic, written in 1949, features this bold, brassy instrument in a gentle, moving melody that audiences will instantly recognize.

Faulk’s piece will be one in a bouquet of pieces chosen by Williams to welcome spring.

“I’ve assembled a mix of composers and styles that will include a few surprises,” said the SSO conductor.

“It’s a program of beautiful melodies

to welcome spring. I want to offer the audience some new experiences, some musical surprises.

“The Lyric Suite

by Edvard Grieg, originally written for piano, but newly arranged for orchestra, and the moody Verdi Overture to La Forza del Destino, will highlight the skills of the orchestra as they move between modern and classic pieces.

Also on the program is Tchaikovsky’s emotive Andante from Symphony No. 5. This is a challenging program, one that has pushed our players. But they’ve nailed these pieces.

I’m delighted with the sound and skill of these musicians.”

The Strathcona Symphony is a community orchestra with players ranging from 12 to more than 70 years of age. In its sixth year, it offers new and experienced players an opportunity to make music and share it with the community.

As with so much that happens in the Valley,

the SSO is volunteerdriven and operates on a limited budget.

“It’s a privilege to work on behalf of this orchestra,” said SSO president Michele Morton. “We are a small community that does great things, and the SSO is an example of what can happen when people work together. Volunteers do everything, from setting up chairs for concerts, to providing treats at intermission, to sitting on our board of directors. Our reward is listening to the beautiful music the orchestra creates.”

Spring Bloom takes place on Saturday, May 26 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, May 27 at 2 p.m. in The Old Church Theatre, 755 Harmston Ave., Courtenay. Tickets are $15.

Local race car driver wins despite challenging conditions Chris Beaulieu, son of 2007 NPP Late Model Series Champion Jason Beaulieu, had a perfect night at the 2012 season opener of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series in Rimbey, Alta.

qualifying heat, Beaulieu overcame tricky track conditions last Saturday night at Castrol Raceway and drove the Team Beaulieu #90 Dodge to victory.

“This was my first real race of the year,” Beaulieu said.

“To get the win feels pretty good right now.”

Local teen represents B.C. at national games Campbell River’s Ryan Howich represented B.C. in a nationwide sporting competition for the deaf.

Howich, 16, was named to Team BC for this year’s Canada Deaf Games, which took place May 15-20.

The games are held every two years and include hockey, curling, volleyball, and bowling.

Athletes are scouted for the Deaf Canadian Team which competes at the World Olympics.

Howich was selected for Team BC in his first year of eligibility to try out for the team.

The Strathcona Triathlon club, in conjunction with Campbell River Recreation and Culture department, offered a four week Introduction to Triathlon camp for youth (KOS – Kids of Steel).

The camp was supported by a generous donation from the Knights of Columbus making the camp $10 for four sessions.

Over the four weeks the kids ages 5 – 12 learned safe bike riding skills; how to fuel up for fitness; how to transition from swim to bike and bike to run and how to put it all together in a mini triathlon on the last night.
