From the popular malls to downtown boutiques, there’s lots of little gems and big treasures to be found in Vernon.

The region’s largest mall is located in Vernon on 27th Street and 48th Avenue. With more than 60 stores and services you are sure to find whatever your heart desires in the Village Green Centre.

Vernon is also home to a number of strip malls, like Vernon Square Mall and Fruit Union Plaza, as well as some bigger shops in and around Anderson Way. There’s also the Shops at Polson Park, which has been revamped with new stores and services to serve your needs.

Looking for a place to cool off this summer? Look no further than one of the many beaches the North Okanagan has to offer.

Kin Beach is located at the far north end of Okanagan Lake and is a popular spot for a splashing good time. This popular hangout offers not only the beach itself, but a wonderful park with barbecue pits, a large grassy area, towering trees and covered picnic areas.

Paddlewheel Park beach is also a great place for family fun and is located on Okanagan Landing Road with a boat launch located on site.

Kal Beach is located at the north end of Kalamalka Lake and offers a long meandering beach with numerous piers that are perfect for a sunset stroll. With golden sands there is a large area blocked off for swimming, and some great

shaded areas for cooling off. A close walk away there is a restaurant with an adjacent liquor store, a convenience store, a stand up paddle board shop, a booth to rent life jackets and kayaks, and in summer there is a concession stand.

Since 1913 the people in the North Okanagan have enjoyed hitting the links at the Vernon Golf and Country Club. Nestled in between downtown Vernon and Kalamalka Lake, this semi-private course lets golfers enjoy a peaceful round surrounded by lombard poplars and weeping willows. OFFERED IN OK/SHUSWAP Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons, or CPS for short, is a volunteer organization dedicated to teaching safe boating. CPS has over approximately 30,000 members and has been presenting safe boating courses in Canada since 1938.

Each year over 200 fatalities are recorded by the Canadian Coast Guard. 80% of those fatalities could have been avoided through increased safety awareness.

CPS presents an entry-level Boating Course that is aimed at those with boats less than 8 metres in length. Heavy emphasis is on safety, leading to writing the exam for the Pleasure Craft Operator

Card. Secondary emphasis is on coastal navigation and general boating skills such as anchoring, docking and undocking, and plotting a course on a chart. The course generally requires two hours per week for 13 weeks.

This entry-level course leads to other courses such as Marine Radio Operator Certificate, Navigating with GPS, Seamanship, Advanced Piloting, Boat and Engine Maintenance, Cruising and many more.

Silver Star’s bike park opens June 29 and offers 1,600 vertical feet of trails and is home to Canada’s largest mountain bike chairlift.

GO BACK IN TIME...

You don’t need a time machine to go back to the 1800’s. The Historic O’Keefe Ranch, founded in 1867 offers the experience right here in the Okanagan Visitors can take a walk through the old O’Keefe victorian-style Mansion, view the original pump organ of St. Anne’s Church, shop in the general store, or visit the Blacksmith. Family vacations have declined in number over the last several years, when many families were forced to cut expenses in the midst of a struggling economy.

One of the more affordable and family-friendly vacation options is camping. Families get the chance to experience some of nature’s most idyllic settings at a fraction of the cost of expensive resort vacations.

• Research the weather. Before choosing a campsite, get a firm grasp of what to expect from Mother Nature while you’re there. Research weather patterns and how much the weather can vary during the time of year when you will be vacationing. Weather conditions will dictate which gear is necessary.

• Find an activity-friendly campground. Adults might enjoy the simple relaxation of camping, but kids will likely need more to do. Look for a campground that can offer activities the children will like, such as hiking, kayaking, rafting, or even mountain biking.

• Get the right gear. The good thing about camping gear is it’s reusable. If this year’s camping trip is a success, then next year’s trip won’t

cost nearly as much. Visit a local camping store and explain your situation, including what you hope to get out of the camping trip and where you’ll be heading. An associate should be able to help you find the right gear for your trip, including a tent, lights, a water filter, cooking materials, and inflatable mattresses.

• Stock up on the essentials.

Particularly during the warmer months, campgrounds can be very hot and insects abound. Be sure to bring adequate amounts of sunscreen and bug spray and apply each liberally every day. Even if the sky is overcast, apply sunscreen to avoid painful sunburn. Other essentials include toilet paper (bring more than you expect to use), bottled water, plates and utensils, and garbage bags. Be sure to bring extra garbage bags to avoid littering in the campground.

• Don’t forget to have fun. Families should emphasize having fun when visiting the campground. Because camping is not a resort-style vacation, it’s up to Mom and Dad to entertain the kids. Bring along a guitar for a campfire sing-a-long, and pack a few board games the family can enjoy under the stars at night.

Since the year 2000, a new sport has been born: geocaching. All it is in fact is the modern version of the good old hide and seek of our childhood. But this time, there’s no question of leaning against a tree, closing our eyes and counting to 10. Instead we use GPS technology!

Geocachers hide an object somewhere and then display the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) on Internet. Other geocachers use their GPS (Global Positioning System) device to download the coordinates and the description of the cache in order to locate its position and then go out and search for it.

Once the cache has been discovered, they leave proof of their visit, replace the treasure in the cache and register their find on Internet.

This modern treasure hunt, which allows the participation of the whole family, was created in

From its humble beginnings with 33 founding members 59 years ago, The Vernon Yacht Club numbers have grown to exceed 335 Members today with both power and sail boaters more or less evenly represented amongst the 285 slips in the moorage.

Although the Vernon Yacht Club is well known to residents of the North Okanagan, most are unaware of the many benefits the Members of the Club provide to their community as a whole.

More than just a group of individuals collectively focused on their common passion for boating, the Vernon Yacht Club actively works to promote the enhancement of safe boating in the North Okanagan as a recreational and pleasurable pastime.

Visitors and residents alike enjoy safe moorage at any one of the 37 mooring buoys, maintained at the cost of the Members of the Vernon Yacht Club, that are strategically placed throughout the north half of Okanagan Lake.

The Vernon Yacht Club also provides community support by donating valuable moorage space free of charge to the Okanagan Landing Volunteer Fire Department for their fire boat and to the Okanagan Quality of Life Society for their pontoon boat “Heaven Can Wait” that is used to take elderly and disabled persons on free water excursions.

Annually, the Vernon Yacht Club holds the Okanagan Charity Sailing Regatta where sailors from up and down the Lake come to enjoy the camaraderie and a great weekend of racing, all for the purpose of raising funds for local charities. Over the past 10 years, with the generous support of our sponsors, this event has raised more than $296,000 for local charities in the North Okanagan.

The Vernon Canadian Power and Sail Squadron receives use of the Vernon Yacht Club’s Clubhouse free of charge as a meeting place and training centre to conduct their professional safe boating courses.

Since 1989 the Vernon Yacht Club has held its annual Boat and Leisure Show, a free community event, with numerous exhibitors displaying their wares and the Members of the Vernon Yacht Club donating their time and boats to offer free sail boat rides to those always wanting to feel the thrill of moving through the water under the power of the wind alone. Memberships are available as either Regular or Associate with Regular members having access to moorage privileges while an Associate membership comes with certain limitations and restrictions. Both however, allow the Member to enjoy the air-conditioned Clubhouse with its relaxed atmosphere and fully equipped bar, dance floor, sound and video systems, free Wi-Fi and the large wrap-around deck that features a powered rollout awning and gas heater overlooking the lake and the moorage basin.

Reciprocal privileges are available to Members at all yacht clubs on the Lake and at many in the Pacific Northwest. The Club also hosts a number of annual social events for its Members including its infamous Pig Roast and the Commodores Ball and Sail-past. In addition to holding their own, Members from the Club participate in “Invasions” and Regatta’s held by other club’s on the Lake to promote inter-club participation.

Major expansions of the moorage took place in 1987, 1998, 2007 and most recently in 2011 replacing all but one of our 5 wooden docks and their slips with concrete, making them extremely stable and safe.The Vernon Yacht Club is the only yacht club on Okanagan Lake to be the owner of its own land giving it the certainty to control its own destiny now and into the future.

To qualify for a Regular membership your principal residence must be within a 100 kilometer radius of the Club, providing an opportunity for residents from Kamloops to Penticton, pay annual dues, moorage fees and a one-time initiation fee.

THRILL SEEKERS will love kitesurfing...

A sport which has only been around for the last ten years or so, kitesurfing (or kiteboarding) is a wave-oriented sport which combines both surfing and kiting. The kite is steered by a control bar attached to the surfer by a harness with four or five lines, 20-30 metres long, allowing for the traction and the steering of the kite.

Two different types of large kites are used, either leading edge inflatable kites or foil kites. The surfboards are generally equipped with footstraps or bindings & can be either unidirectional or bidirectional.

The huge kites allow more experienced enthusiasts to jump up to 20 metres in the air. The sport of kitesurfing requires a site which offers wide-open spaces and a safe environment.

As with all extreme sports, wearing a helmet, a wetsuit and a personal flotation device is always recommended.
