During court proceedings for former Abbotsford teacher Martin Careen, the content of text messages between him and some of his students was revealed. There were explicit messages with one female student that resulted in his conviction and sentencing for sexual exploitation. But there were also friendly chats that, although not criminal in nature, raised questions about the use of this technology. It’s an issue that has been reviewed by the Abbotsford board of education’s policy committee, and remains on the radar. Trustee Shirley Wilson, former head of the committee, said the board is looking at expanding its policy on the use of cellphones and multimedia devices to include such things as text messaging and Facebooking. Alleged gangster arrested Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Police busted an Abbotsford home on Thursday afternoon and arrested a man with apparent gang connections. The 23-year-old is now facing four counts of possession for the purposes of trafficking. He cannot be named until charges are laid. Const. Ian MacDonald said the Abbotsford Police Department’s drug enforcement and gang suppression units, as well as the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team, executed a drug warrant at
the home in the 3200 block of Trafalgar Street at about 2 p.m. Police seized small quantities of cocaine, heroin and crack cocaine, as well as 100 to 150 OxyContin pills. Three people were detained – also including a male youth and a 46-year-old woman – but only the man was arrested. MacDonald said the drugs seized are indicative of someone who is dealing them or supplying them to dealers. “This kind of stash has the earmarks of someone who has some kind of connections to drug-line work,” he said.
A public hearing has been suspended for a police officer fighting a decision that he be fired from the Abbotsford Police Department. Const. Nathan Brown, 30, requested the hearing after the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) ruled on March 16 that allegations of “discreditable conduct” and deceit against him had been proved. Under the Police Act, an officer is entitled to a mandatory public hearing when the proposed discipline is dismissal. Brown’s OPCC hearing was granted on May 11, but a date has not yet been set, pending the outcome of criminal court proceedings. “To continue with the Police Act proceedings at this time would prejudice the criminal prosecution,” said Rollie Woods, deputy police complaint commissioner in a press release. Brown was charged in October 2011 with obstructing a police officer and next appears

Although the suspect is allegedly associated with gangs, it’s difficult to say which one, MacDonald said. He said the Red Scorpions, UN Gang, Independent Soldiers and Duhre Group are still active in the community, but the players aren’t as evident due to “shifting and volatility.” Branches of those gangs have formed, and some people are operating independently of any group as they “jockey for position,” MacDonald added. “It’s far from decided who is running what, who’s aligning with whom.”

May 23 in Abbotsford provincial court for an arraignment hearing. It is alleged that on the evening of April 14, 2011, Brown drank alcohol in the lounge of the Abbotsford Police union building and then crashed into a pole while driving home in his assigned patrol car. He allegedly informed his supervisors the next day that he had been in a collision on the way to work that morning, according to OPCC documents. On April 26, he supposedly admitted to senior officers that the crash had, in fact, taken place on the evening of April 14 and he had left the scene and returned the next day. An “order for investigation” was conducted by the OPCC, and the discipline authority ruled that Brown should be fired due to deceit, and be given a 10-day suspension without pay for discreditable conduct.

Kendall De Menech of Abbotsford can recall lying on the living room floor as a child, playing with her grandfather’s pocket watch. At the time, she had little knowledge of his untimely end. Today, De Menech is in the process of writing a book on her paternal grandfather, an RCMP officer who was murdered in 1928. Sgt. Richard Nicholson was shot during a confrontation with a bootlegger in Molson, Manitoba. while conducting a search of his farm. He was the 49th member of the RCMP to fall.

When her father and grandmother were alive, it wasn’t easy to broach the subject of her grandfather’s passing. “We didn’t really talk about it,” De Menech said. “We didn’t want to upset my grandmother, and my dad was kind of private, so there’s always been this kind of Hollywood mystery.” In the early ’90s, De Menech began searching for information on her grandfather through microfiche at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and found plenty that interested her. Recently, she decided to put together the information she had accumulated into a
booklet for her family. “I have a child, cousins, nieces and nephews that don’t have a lot of information, so I thought I’d just start it off as a booklet for the family,” she said. It wasn’t long before she realized the project could have a much larger scope. “The more I researched, the more I realized it’s just a great hundred years. Even at the time of his death, it was a turning time in terms of advances in technology.” Since those trips to UBC some 20 years ago, De Menech has amassed a sizeable collection of artifacts and information

De Menech’s interest was heightened further when she came into possession of her grandfather’s pocket watch and jacket. “What really set it off for me was the jacket,” she said. The year 1914 is written on the inside sleeve. De Menech believes this to be when the jacket was made and hopes to be finished her book by 2014 so she can celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the coat. De Menech hopes to hold the event at Depot, the RCMP training academy in Regina. This is also where both De Menech’s paternal grandparents are buried. “Isn’t that the coolest? How could you honour a man more? I’m very pumped,” she said. To this day, De Menech is still captivated by her grandfather’s gold pocket watch. “It’s got the most beautiful tick. It’s so quiet and deep.” The watch still contains a photo of De Menech’s grandmother. “Every time he wound it, he looked at the face of the woman he loved,” she said. Over the next two years, De Menech is planning trips to her grandfather’s various posts in cities including Dawson City, Yukon; and Winnipeg, Lac du Bonnet and Molson, Manitoba. Through this exploration, she is hoping to uncover more information and delve deeper into her grandfather’s history as a Mountie.

A massive early morning fire caused extensive damage to a lumber mill in Abbotsford. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called to Absolute Lumber Products, located at 3467 McCallum Rd., near Highway 11, at about 4 a.m. on Saturday. When crews arrived, the plant was fully engulfed, and flames were shooting high in the air. Smoke was so thick over areas of the city that it set off fire alarms at apartment buildings several kilometres away. Firefighters first had to navigate around power lines to begin extinguishing the fire. It took crews about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control, but by then, heavy

A line on a map The provincial government continues to throw millions of dollars towards Experience the Fraser, a plan to link existing parks and trails along both sides of the river from Vancouver to Hope. We hope it’s worth it. Most of the money, $2.5 million initially, went towards developing a concept plan – mapping out the hiking and biking trail links. But because of private property – some of it occupied by industrial businesses, such as saw mills, and even more of it being native land – the proposed trail has to go around them, for now. While connected by a line on a map, the trail in areas such as south Albion in Maple Ridge would consist only of a road shoulder and some signs indicating the route. So it’s not really one, long connected trail, but a series of independent existing ones. Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes suggests a small park fee be added to municipal taxes to purchase private, riverfront property if or when
it becomes available, to expand the route – fill in the gaps. It’s a nice idea, but an expensive one. And would such a trail, if completed, really attract tourists – cyclists who want to ride the entire route just to say they did? Where’s the economic return if they’re just bypassing through town? And why wouldn’t they just take the Trans Canada Trail? Remember that? Who uses it? Who cares? Fraser Valley residents have a plethora of trails they use in abundance already – and some make up part of the Trans Canada Trail and Experience the Fraser. Municipalities already have plans to purchase private properties along the river, negotiate with them when they do become available, to expand trail networks. So what new is the provincial government spending millions of dollars on? As far as we can tell, nothing more than a line on a map. – Black Press
Let’s just say ‘no’ to tree protection bylaw Mark

Other Hand Located within a city advertisement in this edition is announcement of an information-seeking forum on Abbotsford’s notorious Tree Protection Bylaw. Regular readers of this column are probably now groaning that “he’s back on that again” but, without making an issue of this senseless regulation, it may have remained unchanged within the laws of this city. So as an effort to grease the squeaky wheel, city council is now reconsidering the tree bylaw, and seeking your input Thursday, May 24, from 6-9 p.m. in Matsqui Centennial Auditorium (aka the city council chamber). If you believe this bylaw is pointless, punitive and unnecessary, I urge you to attend, as the ad requests, to provide your input and/or opinion. I’ll be there, though it won’t be amendments I’ll be suggesting, rather the complete repeal, abolition, rejection,
rescindment or any one of a hundred other words you can find in a Thesaurus to get rid of this bylaw. Twenty years or so ago, I was given a series of aerial photographs of my property and the surrounding area. The photos were taken in winter, when snow was on the ground, and in comparison to today, there now are literally hundreds more trees in the area. We aren’t clearcutting, we aren’t logging and we aren’t devastating the environment. In fact, as the photos prove, we are “reforesting” it. Noteworthy is that this bylaw really doesn’t affect me, because virtually all of my property is in lawn or pasture. What does affect me is that I have a government body telling me what I can, or can’t do with something I not only own, but pay taxes on. I have no problem with the city protecting trees in parks and public places, but not on private land because they already have regulations in place to regulate clear-cutting for development. Additionally, the tree “protection” law only protects (read that as “demands money from you” to cut or trim your own tree) in the existing and future development areas. It does not apply to three-quarters of the city, most of which
is designated Agricultural Land Reserve but also includes large wooded areas and major gravel removal operations. It also does not apply to thousands of acres of Crown land on Sumas Mountain that is designated, and currently being used for, clear-cut logging. Let’s make something else very clear: This bylaw with its “tree police” is discretionary and arbitrary. If you have a little

Make them mad and they whack you with large fees. Or, after the fact of trimming or cutting trees without their permission, they levy huge fines or reprimands. An elderly neighbour who, being environmentally friendly, uses a clothesline instead of an electric dryer, recently received a letter of reprimand because she had someone trim a few branches,
off only two trees, that interfered with the clothesline she has been using for 30 years. Or another who gets “attacked” for clearing a fence line so he can keep his cows in; a condo complex whose groundskeeping strata fees have risen markedly just to meet city-imposed costs. Or a woman downtown whose neighbour complained about the sap from her tree that coats his car. She understood, didn’t really want the tree anyway and applied for permission to have it removed. Denied! In my opinion the guy next door should now send his car-cleanup bills to the city. Got a huge tree that threatens your house, or those of the neighbours? If the tree police determine the tree isn’t “a danger,” what are the chances you’ll get a letter that the city assumes liability for it? No, this bylaw doesn’t need amending. It needs to be rescinded, repealed, quashed. I would also like to know just how much this unnecessary “protection” policy is costing Abbotsford taxpayers in the way of staffing and processing. letters Warm Zone closing puts women in danger The funding for the Warm Zone, a threeyear project funded by the city, provincial and federal governments, has come to its end. According to these government offices, it was not a success. Those who feel this way should talk to our ladies and find out what these people feel about the Warm Zone and the fact that this facility which offered them safety, security, food and counselling is being taken away by uninformed individuals. Government officials are putting our ladies back in harm’s way. Do you have a family
member or a friend who is having addiction or mental health problems? Maybe one of these days that situation will be yours to deal with. Where are you going to go for help? Probably not to our city council! Probably not to our provincial government! Certainly not to our federal government! These ladies reside here in Abbotsford. Many have addictions and mental health problems that need help. Abbotsford does not have a detox centre. The Salvation Army is doing a wonderful job, but they are

overwhelmed by the numbers on the street. Our food bank is also in need of support. But what does our beloved local government do? They would rather fund (or partially fund) a golf course and a hockey team rather than help those who really need and deserve our help. Who else are they supporting? Time to take a reality check and ask them. I love hockey but I don’t think our teams, no matter what league they are in, would sacrifice a women’s life for their sport. I don’t think our golfers would do it either.

Tielmann to debut with Team Canada Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News
When Pat Oaten, head coach of the Canadian senior women’s water polo team, called Alexa Tielmann last week to invite her to join his squad for a major tournament in China, she was utterly stunned. She is, after all, just 17 years old – still working on finishing off her Grade 12 studies at Abbotsford’s Yale Secondary. So as she processed the invitation to play in the FINA Women’s World League Super Final, Tielmann’s initial response was indicative of her youth. “I said I’d have to ask my mom,” Tielmann related with a chuckle. “But they (my parents) were ecstatic to hear the national team was that interested in me.” Tielmann’s status as a phenom was already well-established. Last year, she became the first Canadian

Her freshman year begins in September. But as far as national team possibilities go, Tielmann’s focus was on earning selection for the Canadian under-20 team which will participate in the World
Junior Championships in December. A senior team call-up wasn’t supposed to be in play, at least not so soon. But at the U18 club nationals in Kamloops earlier this month, Tielmann was the top scorer with 21 goals in five games – the runner-up had 14 goals – as her Fraser Valley Water Polo Club won bronze. The call from Oaten came soon
after. Tielmann flew to Montreal last Friday to train with Team Canada, and the squad departs for Changsu, China on May 26. The top two teams in the eight-nation tourney earn berths to the 2013 World Championships. “I’m sure it will be tough,” Tielmann said. “I’m not sure what’s going to happen. But I’m excited.”

Twisters terrific in Delta
Athletes from Abbotsford’s Twisters Gymnastics Club made a major medal haul at the Delta Invitational last weekend. On the girls’ side, Emma Doede, Zoe Rumsby, Leanne Hellewell and Marquita Morison were all-around medalists in their respective categories.
