entury Group says the homes it proposes to build on the Southlands property will be priced below the area average, but only time will tell whether that will be incentive enough to entice young families into the community and boost Tsawwassen's dwindling elementary school population.

This was one topic of discussion Tuesday evening (May 15) at the second of two public information meetings about the Southlands hosted by Century Group at the South Delta Recreation Centre.

During the designated question period, one Tsawwassen resident asked if Century Group envisions enough children living on the Southlands to warrant the reopening of Boundary Beach Elementary school, which closed down in 2009 due to lack of enrolment and a budget shorfall.

Century Group president Sean Hodgins said if the Southlands development proposal goes ahead, perhaps the Delta School District might consider the possibility.

"I would love to see that school open, I think it would be a great win for the community," Hodgins said. But he also noted that nearby elementary schools Pebble Hill and English Bluff are operating well below capacity.

Karel Ley, from the Southlands Community Planning Team, said the citizens' group has discussed ways to encourage young fami-

lies to move into the area in order to improve school attendance.

"If the properties are financially viable for younger families, and for people like me who want to downsize to one of those delightful little cottages, then I can see this bringing the kind of people into the area that we need to support our grey population," Lay said.

Hodgins said homes on the Southlands will be priced at about $550,000 or less.

"That would be our target. That's hardly affordable housing, it's still market driven housing," he said. But he added that the average price of a home in Tsawwassen now is about $650,000.

"Our houses are going to be less money relative to the market in Tsawwassen right now," he said. "This is still market housing that we're trying to develop. Is it absolutely affordable? No. But is it more affordable?

Yes." Architect Patrick Cotter said the long-term buildout period will give Delta schools plenty of time to adapt to changing demographics.

"This is projected to unfold over many, many years, and that gives school districts a lot of advanced warning in terms of gradual increases in student demand," Cotter said.

Century Group's proposal is to build 950 housing units on 20 per cent of the 537-acre agricultural parcel. The other 80 per cent would be transferred to the Corporation of Delta for agriculture, natural habitat and public open space.

On April 4, the development company submitted an application to Delta council

to rezone the Southlands for the first phase of development. Phase 1 would include 450 units, plus infrastructure and public amenities.

Last fall Century Group put forward an application to amend the Official Community Plan to allow new uses on the Southlands property.

Tuesday's public open house featured informational sign boards, presentations, a question-and-answer period and the opportunity to submit written comments.

Cotter gave an overview of the development plan, describing the mix of housing types and the Market Square situated at the village centre.

"Really what we have is a community that has as its focus, and at its core, the celebration of the agricultural component of the land, brought right into the centre of town, and a focus on community gardening as part of the character of the village," he said.

Paul Dorby, transportation planner for the project, emphasized the new east-west link that would run between 56th Street and Boundary Bay Road. He said the link, which turns into the "high street" at the town centre, will help distribute traffic and take pressure off of Boundary Bay Road.

The next step in the application process is for the Corporation of Delta to hold a public information meeting, likely in June. Council is expected to consider first and second reading in the fall and a public hearing would occur after second reading. reporter@southdeltaleader.com

A Delta Police officer was allegedly assaulted after making a traffic stop of a suspected impaired driver Tuesday (May 15) in Ladner.

According to the DPD, one of its members was responding to a report from another motorist who was following a vehicle being operated by a suspected impaired driver.

When the officer conducted the traffic stop of the suspect along Admiral Blvd. the driver allegedly got out of his vehicle and became aggressive, did not comply with verbal direction given by the officer, and without provocation began to throw punches at the member.

The driver was arrested for assaulting a police officer and transported to Delta Police Headquarters.

The driver was also issued a driving suspension, along with a violation ticket for having no vehicle insurance.

The officer was not hurt during the alleged assault.

Charges are pending.

TFN election announced Members of the Tsawwassen First Nation will go to the polls on Sept. 5 to elect their government.

On general election day, which was recently called by the TFN executive council, eligible voters will be asked to choose one chief and 12 legislators for a three-year term.

This will be the second general election held since the Tsawwassen treaty came into effect. In the last election in September 2009, Chief Kim Baird retained her position for a sixth term, acclaimed during the nomination process.

The TFN executive council is made up of the four legislators who get the most votes in the election for the legislature, and the elected chief. They will manage the government’s day to day operations, debate proposed regulations under Tsawwassen law and other responsibilities of Tsawwassen government.

The Legislative Assembly’s responsibilities include meeting to debate, consider, and enact laws, and to pass the annual budget.

Council supports pay hike Proposed salary adjustment based on average of four Metro Vancouver municipalities with similar populations CHRISTINE LYON REPORTER

Delta’s mayor and council are in favour of giving themselves a pay raise.

On Monday evening (May 14), Delta’s civic politicians gave three readings to a bylaw that would increase their salaries to match the average of four other Lower Mainland municipalities.

That bylaw will be scheduled for final adoption later this month.

If approved, Mayor Lois Jackson will receive a pay hike to $110,653 from $103,932, while the six councillors will see their remuneration jump to $47,564 from $44,048.

Council’s pay is based on a formula that compares their remuneration to those of four Metro Vancouver municipalities with similar populations—Coquit-

lam, Richmond, Township of Langley and District of North Vancouver.

According to a staff report from the Human Resources and Corporate Planning Department, Delta council’s current remuneration rate is below the average of these four comparators.

The report also says Delta councillors have a larger workload because the municipality is the largest one in B.C. to employ six councillors instead of the usual eight for a population of more than 50,000.

Also recommended is that the taxable vehicle allowance for mayor and council be increased by $200 per month to reflect the increasing cost of fuel, insurance and vehicle maintenance.

The cost of the proposed salary adjustment and increased car allowance would be funded from the 2012 Financial Plan. reporter@southdeltaleader.com

Two hundred and fifty metres may not seem like a great distance, but every step along the way will be filled with meaning for two Deltans taking part in the Rick Hansen Relay event passing through Ladner and Tsawwassen on Sunday (May 20).

Ladner's Jason Jones a n d No r t h D e l t a ' s Harkiran Parmar are two of the 26 taking part in the Delta portion of the event celebrating the 25th anniversary of Hansen's global wheelchair Man in Motion tour that raised awareness and funds for accessibility and spinal chord research.

Jones, an avid runner and PE teacher at Sacred Heart School in Ladner where school sports participation is around 90 per cent of the student population, said he asked his wife jokingly if organizers could make his part of the relay at least 2 km.

"I'd like at least that, but it's all good. It's for a good cause," Jones said, adding he remembers the Hansen's original Man in Motion tour.

"I was about 15 at the time and when he touched down in Canada it was really exciting. It was all you heard about in the news," he said.

Bolstered by success at that level Harris took the next step to enter competitions in California where he was a regular top five finisher.

His performances caught the eye of pro teams and he was approached to join the Bones Brigade where he rode with the likes of Tony Hawk and, "a lot of the inventors of the best tricks ever to happen in skateboarding," he says.

Harris spent the better part of a decade at the pinnacle of the sport, but stepped back in the early 1990s to start a family.

"My wife would have to fly into different cities just to see me because I was all over the place back then," he says. "It was exciting and fun, but at the same time we were trying to raise a family."

While the touring schedule may have slowed down, Harris' enjoyment of the sport has not diminished.

"Just like if you're a skier or golfer you just keep going," he says, adding only now he picks and choose which events to attend.

"I've never really stopped competing. It's been more of a fun, let's take the family to Tokyo or Sweden and enter that contest," he says.

And that led to helping organize the freestyle competition at the rodeo. The last one was in Sweden and the year before it was held in Japan.

"We decided to bring that event to the Cloverdale Rodeo and it was just one of those things that happened," Harris says.

"They (Cloverdale Rodeo) had asked me to do shows there last year and once I did that and started talking to the organizers they asked if I'd bring the (freestyle) event to Vancouver at the rodeo."

The competition is set to feature 40 of the top pro competitors representing 10 to 12 different countries with the ages spanning 16 to 50.

"The guys who are still winning these events are still guys in their 40s. And that's insane because I never thought that being this age I'd still be able to skate this good as I did in my 20s," Harris says.

"And a lot of people come up to me and say that I actually skate better now. And I don't know how that is. I guess I've been on that board for so long that everything still works.

"And I'll keep going as long as I can."

n most sporting competitions age can play a factor.

But for Ladner's Kevin Harris the fact he will be taking on some challengers three decades his junior doesn't phase him.

That's because Harris, 49, is a "grey beard" in a still relatively young sport— skateboarding.

He was Canada's first pro skateboarder and considered one of the tops in the world from 1982-1992 and will be taking part in the World Round-Up Freestyle Skateboarding Philip Competition at Raphael the Cloverdale Rodeo this long weekend.

It's his first competition since 2007 and he says he's still got the wheels to stay up with the younger generation.

"Guys in the sport who are my age, we're all still skating and skating very well," says Harris. "And I think some of the things we have over the younger guys is that we have so many years of experience in competing."

And that means Harris' generation also serves as mentors—something he didn't have when he was rising through the ranks.

"It's really funny, when I was skating as a pro in my 20s—and most people call that your peak in pro sports—we were in such a young sport that all the guys I was skating with were also that age," he says. "So, we didn't have anyone to look up to—no guys in their 50s because the sport didn't exist until the mid 1970s."

Harris first picked up a skateboard when he was 15.

"In the late 70s I became the best amateur skater in Canada and at that time there was a major circuit that not many people knew about because skating was still kinda small at that point."

Regional events to determine the top competitors were held at Super Valu grocery stores across the country and a national finals were held at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver.

Tsawwassen water park wins award THE FIREPLACE WAREHOUSE SHP

Design, access and community involvement recognized Tsawwassen’s new water park has made a splash with the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA).

The Corporation of Delta was presented with the Parks and Open Spaces Award for Rotary WaterWorks at Diefenbaker Park.

Officially opened last August, the facility was recognized for its design, accessibility and community involvement.

The project was driven by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen which contributed $275,000 both in-kind and financially with the balance of the project being paid through the Corporation of Delta.

“The Rotary WaterWorks at Diefenbaker Park is a great example of the power of community involvement in the creation of a functional

and unique park feature that will be enjoyed for many years to come,” said BCRPA chief executive officer Suzanne Allard Strutt in a press release. “We applaud the volunteers and the Corporation of Delta for creating a public space that is accessible to the entire community and reflects the history of the area.”

The Parks and Open Spaces Award recognizes excellence in the concept, design and development of parks and open spaces. The space demonstrates outstanding and/or innovative aspects which have or could have significant impact in the recreation and parks field.

Tsawwassen Rotary Club member Vickie Sangster and chairperson of the Rotary WaterWorks project, said she was delighted with the award.

“It’s great to be recognized in this way,” she said. “I just hope that other groups take a page from the book of Rotary Tsawwassen and are able to accomplish something they want to because it just shows you what can be done when you have a good partner and have the community behind you.”

The project was also featured in the Rotary Club’s national magazine.

Sangster added the park’s design is unique by the incorporation of educational components through interpretive signage stressing the importance of water stewardship and conservation as well as the historical reference relating to the Diefenbaker Park as a former gravel pit.

Grade 12 Sands Secondary student Parmar said she was shocked to hear last fall she had been selected to not only take part in the relay, but was chosen to be the final runner in the Delta portion who will hand over the relay medal— which has been carried across the country by 7,000 participants who have made a difference in their community— at Delta Municipal Hall where a community celebration will held.

"Honestly, this still hasn't quite sunk in," said Parmar, 17, who is part of the Me to We committee at school, a member of the Delta Youth Advisory Council and volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club. "It's something I never would have dreamed of my entire life.

It's a huge honour and I don't know of any words to do justice to this."

Parmar said she'll be thinking of her mother,

Ravneet, who died of cancer last year at 47 during her run.

"I know that if she'd been here she would have been extremely proud and there for me all the way. So, I will be running for her, but others too, because in my view everybody is a difference maker. At some point in all of our lives we will each do something to help another person— even if it's just holding the door open for someone. It's the little things for me that can make a difference."

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson said having the relay pass through Delta is an honour and a way of recognizing a hero from that era when feats such as Hansen's were not commonplace.

"I don't want to say it was more significant then, but people weren't doing that sort of thing in those days. And when it was done it was a very special thing," Jackson said. "And today we remember that, and more people are becoming involved in caring for and about others.

Sarah Gallop, co-chair of this year's May Days—which runs May 25-27— said the community is invited down to Memorial Park on May 27 following the May Days parade—betweem 1-4 p.m.—to try their hand at fashioning

their own iced masterpiece.

A veritable army of gingerbread men—about 300—along with all you need to decorate them will be available.

"When people think of the fair and a carnival, you think of candy and the great fair food," Gallop said. "So, we wanted to tie this all together and do something a little different."

While the sheer number of gingerbread men required for the event made it necessary to have them supplied, Gallop says this recipe below is ideal for baking a much smaller batch right in your own kitchen.

Gingerbread INGREDIENTS 1 cup butter 1 ½ cups white sugar 1 egg 1 ½ tbsp. orange zest 2 tbsp. corn syrup

1 tbsp. water 3 ¼ cups white flour 2 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. ginger 1 tsp. cloves

DIRECTIONS 1. Cream butter and sugar together, add egg and beat until fluffy.

2. Add orange peel, corn syrup and water and mix well.

3. Add baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and flour. If mixture is too dry add a little water.

4. Chill dough in fridge for 15 min-

utes.

5. Roll to 1/8 inch thickness and cut out cookies.

6. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Decorate with Royal Icing and candy or sprinkles as desired.

TFN mall looks like a ponzi scheme, with the shopping mall being used as bait to force Delta taxpayers to fund tens of millions of dollars in local road improvements to ensure more and larger roads, not to service the shopping mall, instead servicing housing developments on ALR lands.

Already, farm lands are being assembled by developers hoping the provincial government will take the farmland out of the ALR. The cost of the new roads for the supposed TFN shopping mall being a lure for Delta council to support new housing developments, to create a larger tax base to fund expensive road construction.

What should be of great

concern to Delta taxpayer's is: "Is the TFN going to fund road improvements in Delta?"

If the answer is no, then Delta council should not consider any extra road improvements at all and let the ensuing gridlock on choked roads starve the new shopping mall of their much needed customers.

The lack of real transportation planning and the lack of real public consultation, certainly points to some sort of provincial flim-flam, trying to get precious farmlands out of the ALR and Delta Council should not even consider playing the provincial game.

During her tenure the Delta Hospital Foundation has raised nearly $17 million for equipment a n d c a p i t a l i m p r ov e m e n t projects.

Teresa was instrumental in building both the new emergency room and new surgical daycare suite.

She forged relationships that secured the funds for Delta Hospital to obtain its own CT scanner. She raised thousands to renovate the operating rooms, clinics, residential care tubrooms, and sought to improve our surroundings by creating the much adored Healing Gardens and Forest for the Future.

In addition, Teresa organized seven highly successful galas, as well as seven golf tournaments,

and numerous other fundraising initiatives.

Her legacy to Delta Hospital, and to this community, is amazing and noteworthy.

As you can imagine, I did not want this wonderful woman to slip out of our community without mention and thanks.

We wish her all the best in her new pursuits and will be forever grateful for everything she has done for this hospital and this community.

So, on behalf of Delta Hospital staff and physicians I would like to say thank you Teresa.

You will always hold a special place in the hearts and memories of Delta Hospital.

What's in a name?

Marc Dalton, Maple Ridge-Mission MLA, thinks his party, the B.C. Liberals, should change its name.

He says the name—in place since the provincial Liberals formed in 1991 (and the one voters have elected to govern three consecutive terms) —is confusing to some centre-right voters, now that the B.C. Conservatives have surged to solid third-party status.

He says those who are federal Conservatives will have a hard time voting B.C. Liberal next time.

Last month, the NDP won two B.C. byelections, in Chilliwack-Hope and Port Moody-Coquitlam. The Liberals came second in both, the Conservatives third.

The Liberals fear more vote splitting in the May 2013 provincial election.

But changing the party’s name won’t prevent that. Doing so would seem even more confusing to voters, which may be the point.

It’s easy to see why the Liberals would want to rebrand the party, distance itself from past scandals and failures, and try to reverse falling popularity. But whatever the Liberals come up with—the B.C. Alliance Party is being floated about—it’s still the same cast of characters who brought you the B.C. Rail and HST fiascoes.

Whether or not Kevin Falcon and other cabinet ministers run again isn’t going to change that. And changing the party’s name, to something more progressive, won’t erase the past, or fool many.

In the South Delta Leader's April 27, 2012 edition the Readerpoll asked if a name change would help improve the Liberal party's fortunes.

The response—unscientifically based as it may have been—suggested no as a mere 27 per cent thought it would make a positive difference.

B.C. doesn’t need a new centre-right party— it already has two. The B.C. Conservatives beat the Liberals to the punch. Trying to decide between the two is what’s confusing.

Are the Liberals about families or business?

A tiger can’t change its stripes. Changing the party’s name is just painting over them.

As long as the B.C. Conservatives are around, the right will be split. And that’s what the NDP is counting on.

Big Bike fundraiser rolls into Ladner Fundraiser for Heart and Stroke Foundation draws 6 teams A bike built for 29 riders took to the streets of Ladner Monday (May 14) as the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and Yukon rolled its annual Big Bike fundraiser into South Delta.

Joan Mann, area manager for the foundation and the Big Bike event said six local teams had signed up for the event which has riders fundraise for the opportunity to get some exercise and at the same time donate money to a wor thy cause.

Last year, 200 communities across the country took part in the Big Bike ride and raised more

Growing game New outdoor pickleball venue at Cromie Park in Ladner offers added challenges CHRISTINE LYON REPORTER

Peter Darvill took up the curiously-named sport of pickleball two years ago and has been hooked ever since.

The Ladner resident is now the Pickleball Canada ambassador for Richmond/South Delta and plays the game six days a week. He describes the sport as "a mini game of tennis played on a court the exact size of a badminton court."

The net is 34 inches high, slightly lower than a tennis court net, and players hit a hard Wiffle ball using paddles made out of wood or graphite. Most games are played in doubles.

"It gets the heart rate going, especially when you're playing with people of your same calibre," Darvill says. "It's really good for seniors," he adds, explaining the sport is much easier on the knees than tennis.

"Anybody who's got any experi-

ence in racquetball, table tennis, any of those kinds of sports, do very well at it," he says.

According to the USA Pickleball Association, the sport was invented in 1965 by a man from Bainbridge Island, Washington. It was named after the family dog, who would chase after balls and hide them in the bushes.

There are about 30 active pickleball players in South Delta who play at the Ladner Community Centre and the South Delta Recreation Centre.

This year, local pickleballers have a new outdoor venue at Cromie Park, adjacent to Ladner Elementary School. The Corporation of Delta last year resurfaced the tennis courts and added permanent pickleball lines.

"It's kind of unique in Canada and the northwest United States to be outside, because basically it's played inside here," says Darvill, explaining outdoor play requires a harder ball.

"So the game gets played a little bit faster," he says, listing the added challenges of wind and sun glare.

Darvill encourages others to try the sport and says he's happy to teach newcomers the basics.

"It's quite easy to pick up," he says. "It's really growing in popularity and it's good for you."

Play time is usually Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 p.m. at Ladner Community Centre and Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at South Delta Rec Centre.

Charting new waters

t’s a balmy spring evening and Deas Slough is dotted with rowers gliding along the water as rush hour traffic rumbles over a bridge nearby through the George Massey Tunnel.

In her single-person shell, novice rower Kiran Aujlay concentrates on her body position and rowing technique. With every stroke, she propels her boat further and further away from the dock where she’s left her wheelchair for the evening.

Aujlay is a paraplegic athlete who participates in Delta Deas Rowing Club’s new adaptive rowing program which gives people with physical and intellectual disabilities the opportunity to get out on the water.

With a few equipment modifications and some assistance transitioning from chair to boat, Aujlay is ready to row.

“I love it,” says the 30-year-old North Delta resident with a grin. “As you’re rowing out there, it’s very serene, very beautiful. And once you get going it’s a pretty fast sport.”

cardiovascular exercise, which can be a challenge for those with mobility restrictions, Aujlay says.

“For people with physical disabilities, that’s a big thing, trying to figure out a way to get a workout and get the heart pumping.”

Opening new doors An adaptive rowing program has been in the works for some time at Delta Deas Rowing Club, which already has successful junior and adult programs.

“It’s something that I’ve been wanting to do for years,” says Julie Stevens, club manager and adaptive rowing coach.

“Our infrastructure is so easy, it was just a natural fit,” she says, noting the club features an easily accessible, low dock with no stairs.

“We’re a rowing club that can do this, so I thought why aren’t we?”

Last October, Aujlay and two other athletes came out for a trial run but, with winter approaching, the club shelved the idea until this spring.

So far, eight people have completed the club’s adaptive rowing course and two, including Aujlay, have signed up to be full club members.

Stevens says those interested in adaptive rowing should have some range of motion and a bit of core stability.

“We’ve got amputees that row, we’ve got paras (paraplegics) that row, we do have an autistic young man that’s just started,” she says.

Stevens adds the provincial sport organization Rowing B.C. is encouraging clubs to establish adaptive rowing programs and a few others are taking root across the Lower Mainland. The new program at Deas Island was made possible, in part, by grant money and a loaner boat courtesy of Rowing B.C. and Rowing Canada.

Shifting gears Aujlay lost the use of her legs when she was injured in a car accident the day before her sixth birthday. She dabbled in wheelchair basketball as a teen, but there wasn’t much in the way of organized wheelchair sports in the southern Manitoba farming community where she grew up.

When her family moved to the West Coast near the end of high school, it opened up a whole new world of opportunity. Aujlay took up tennis, and later turned her attention to wheelchair racing—a sport which took her to

international-level competition.

But a recent surgery—Aujlay had rods put in her back to correct scoliosis—slowed her down for a while.

“It was a really extensive surgery and unfortunately there were complications, so I ended up spending six weeks in ICU, and then six months in hospital,” she says. “I’m not the type of person who sits still for very long, so to be forced to do that was absolutely horrible.”

After the surgery, she could no longer participate in racing. At first she thought she would be OK, that perhaps athletics was just a phase in her life.

“But the more I gravitated away from sport, the more I realized that it was actually a part of who I was,” she says.

And so began the search for a new athletic endeavor.

“I’ve tried other sports since recovering from my surgery and nothing has really clicked with me as much as rowing has, so I’m pretty excited about it,” she says.

When it comes to equipment modifications, Aujlay uses a fixed seat, as opposed to a sliding seat. Her oars are shortened slightly, to

“It’s actually, I think, quite liberating for someone who has mobility restrictions to get out on the water and be able to do what everyone else is doing,” Aujlay says.

Athletes with vision impairment or an intellectual impairment will usually row in conventional boats that do not need modifications.

Worldwide exposure Former Canadian Olympic rower Joy Fera, who was one of the founders of Delta Deas Rowing Club, says she is thrilled with the addition of the adaptive rowing program.

“Sports can be enjoyed to a great extent by those with disabilities,” says the Tsawwassen resident, adding that one of the legacies of the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games held in Vancouver is an increased awareness of and respect for physically disabled athletes.

Adaptive events were added to the World Rowing Championships in 2002 and an intellectually disabled category was added in 2009. This summer, adaptive rowing will make its second Paralympic appearance at the London Olympics after debuting at the 2008 Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing, China.

Fera hopes the televised exposure will draw more attention to the sport.

“Hopefully they will show that coverage in Canada,” she says. “That should also inspire those that might be reluctant,” she adds, explaining some would-be adaptive rowers might be apprehensive about the water, depending on their ability to swim.

Fera gets out to the Delta Deas Rowing Club regularly and says she has enjoyed meeting some of the adaptive program participants.

“It’s just delightful to watch the progress being made by those learning,” she says.

Aujlay has only been out on the water a handful of times this season, but she’s quickly picking up the rowing lexicon, feeling her core muscles strengthen and becoming more comfortable putting her complete trust in the coaches—who keep her safety paramount.

“Every time that we go out, I personally feel more and more confident,” Aujlay says.

As the weather warms up, she plans to start rowing more frequently and looks forward to getting better— and faster.

“I would like to actually pursue this competitively,” she says. “But I’m still learning the ropes.” reporter@southdeltaleader.com

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association has honoured the best of the best in the home building industry with their third annual Ovation Awards.

“Residential construction is a major contributer to Metro Vancouver’s economy and we are delighted to acknowledge the industry’s brightest stars,” says GVHBA President and CEO Peter Simpson.

There were several familiar faces among the big winners, including ParkLane Homes, who came out with eight awards including the Grand Ovation Awards for Single-Family Builder of the Year and Multi-Family Builder of the Year.

“We are honoured to be the winner of these awards,” says Yosh Kasahara, ParkLane’s General Manager of Sales and Marketing. “We recognize the high calibre of builders and projects in these categories, and to be named (SingleFamily) and Multi-Family Builder of the Year is a testament to our dedicated team of employees, stakeholders and suppliers.”

ParkLane also won awards for Best Single-Family Detached Home: Less than 2,000 Square Feet, Best Single-Family Detached Home: 2,000 to 2,499 Square Feet, Best SingleFamily Detached Home: 2,500 to 2,999 Square Feet, Best Single-Family Detached Home: 3,000 Square Feet and Over, Best Townhome/Rowhome Development: Less than 2,000 Square Feet and Best Marketing Innovation: Multi-Family Builder.

When it stays light outside past 8 p.m., it's a telltale sign that cycling season has begun.

While the hard-core riders have been pedal-pushing throughout the winter, the late evening sunsets and mild spring temperatures cause the number of recreational riders at Delta-based Team Coastal Cycling Club to swell.

One year ago, Ladner resident Laura Thomas joined the club. No stranger to cycling, Thomas worked as a bike courier in downtown Vancouver after high school, but she had been out of the saddle for a number of years when she decided to take part in an intense, 60-kilometre group ride along 0 Avenue in Surrey.

Continued from p.5 Her legs felt like they were on fire and she almost lost her breakfast, but she finished the ride and was immediately hooked on the sport.

"It's a bit addictive," Thomas says, explaining that cycling not only provides great exercise and a chance to enjoy the fresh air and local scenery, but it can also be a social activity when riding with a group. Team Coastal has some 200 members and, when travelling in a pack, members ride "two up," or side by side, to allow for chit chat.

That's how Thomas met her fiancé Alan Hewson. The two ended up next to each other during a club ride last July and a romance blossomed from there.

This season, the couple is focusing on nurturing new riders. They lead beginner-level rides on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. And on Sundays they lead a 20-kilometre round-trip family outing from Ladner Pioneer Library to the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary—a favourite excursion for Thomas's eight-year-old daughter Ella-Rose.

With a mix of agricultural flatland, challenging hills and waterfront scenery, Delta is a destination for Lower Mainland cyclists.

Hewson is partial to the route from South Shore Cycle in North Delta, through the Agricultural Land Reserve and around Tsawwassen, with a pit stop at Petra's Arts Kafe for a coffee before heading back north.

He has been an avid cyclist his whole life and commuted by bike to work for 12 years. After taking a hiatus to raise a family, he returned whole-heartedly to the sport about two years ago.

"You feel alive and fast, and healthy.

And then you throw in the social component and, I mean, what's not to like?" he says.

Thomas is particularly fond of the club's Monday night beginner ride from North Delta, through Sunshine Hills, along Ladner's farm roads, through the cow tunnel and back to North Delta via Tilbury.

"It kind of fries your legs at the end even though it's just a short 40 km ride," Thomas says. "It's always beautiful. The sunsets, the mountains. The view is incredible when you're out riding."

Thomas says that while South Delta offers an ideal mix of terrain for cyclists, she would like to see more dedicated bike paths, similar to what exists in Europe.

"We do have a little bit of a problem

in South Delta where we have this wonderful flat land, but it's really car dominated," she says. "Ladner could be a complete cycling haven. We could have paths everywhere."

In addition to recreational riding, Thomas and Hewson are involved with Ride2Survive, an annual, one-day 400-kilometre group bike ride from Kelowna to Delta that raises money for cancer research. This year, riders are scheduled to roll into South Shore

Hewson attempted the grueling course for the first time last year.

"Not many first timers survive the full 400 km," he says, explaining he had a mechanical failure after 300 km and had to sit out two stages. "You're happy to be off the bike when it's over, 'cause it's 19 hours."

Thomas and Hewson are also enthusiastic spectators of the Tour de Delta cycling race, scheduled to take place July

6, 7 and 8 this year. Ella-Rose plans to compete in the kids' criterium. Last year she rode the course on a mountain bike, but this year she is the proud owner of a sleek new road bike—one of the smallest available on the market—which should give her some more speed.

For new and returning riders, joining a cycling group is a good way to get started, Hewson says.

And Thomas insists novice riders shouldn't be intimidated by the pack decked out in their head-to-toe cycling gear.

"Some people think when they see us all out riding in our kit that we're some kind of race team," she says. "But we're really not. We're just a bunch of middle-aged people out getting some exercise, quite frankly," she laughs. ❦

Ladner Pioneer May Days, one of B.C.’s oldest free family fairs is celebrating its 116th anniversary in 2012.

And organizers are promising it will be a “sweeter” than ever celebration as the threeday (May 25-27) event’s theme

this year is Candyland.

The Candyland theme will figure prominently throughout the weekend with a “community cupcake” table on Saturday where visitors can ice their own cupcakes.

Candyland will also be prevalent in the annual parade.

New this year, the parade will include a bicycle decorating contest, in which kids are encouraged to “take pride in their ride” for a chance to win great prizes in their age category.

Festivities begin on Friday evening with discounted midway rides for kids. Saturday is filled with a broad range of top-

notch family entertainers and many free activities and entertainment for children, including a petting zoo and pony rides.

Sunday activities kick off with a pancake breakfast followed at noon by the parade, featuring the May Queen float.

The 1.5 mile parade route leads through the heart of historic Ladner Village and culminates at the stage in Memorial Park where the traditional May Pole

Dance and May Queen Crowning Ceremony take place.

Soothing sounds Ladner's Memorial Park the stage for annual musical treat

Music in the park sounds like the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon in Ladner. And thanks to the 8th annual Ladner Bandfest lineup there will be plenty of free entertainment to take in.

A total of 21 bands will perform on two stages at Memorial Park on June 9 and 10, rain or shine. Families are invited to bring their lawn chairs and picnic baskets to make the most out of a weekend of outstanding music.

Shows start as early as 10:20 a.m. and the latest performances begin at 5:20 p.m.

On June 9 Dal Richards and MLA Vicki Huntington will be the special guests at 2:20 p.m. And Mayor Lois Jackson will be the special guest on June 10.

Ladner Village Market Sundays a perfect family day out

Every year thousands of people from South Delta and beyond look forward to the Ladner Village Market, an open air market stretching over three blocks right in the heart of the historic town.

This summer marks the 17th year for the market which prides itself on an array of vendors—around 150 of them—who “make it, bake it, or grow it.”

Organizer Bill McKnight said an average of 7,500 people attend every other Sunday through the summer—starting with the first market of the year on June 1o, right to the final one on Sept. 9.

Three days of racing returns to Delta for 12th year

For the past 11 years Delta has been “cycling central” in the Lower Mainland as the Tour de Delta has rolled into the three town sites of North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen. And the 12th annual event is going to extend that thrill of wheel-to-wheel racing as the streets get turned over to local and professional racers who will be competing for $25,000 in prize money which makes it the richest event in Canadian cycling. The men Pro 1/2 start at 9 a.m. from Sungod Recreation Centre (7815 112th Ave. in North Delta) and also finish at Winskill Park.

They complete 4.5 laps of North Delta, then 10 in Tsawwassen for a grand total of 140 km.

It’s hard to believe that this year marks Wellbrook Winery’s 8th annual Summerfest event.

But each year the East Ladner farm draws a steadily increasing num-

ber of visitors to the event.

Dining‘out’ Picnics in South Delta offer great tastes and locations

The old saying goes that when eating in the great outdoors the food just seems to taste that much better.

And when you start with some great recipes for that meal “out” you can’t help but get it right, especially when you pair it with some superb places to visit in South Delta to pack along a picnic basket.

To help with that, we asked some local restaurants and chefs to tell us what they like to take along on a picnic, and where they like to go.

And their responses ranged the menu from vegetarian to barbecue favourites.

So read on and enjoy a meal in the great outdoors.

Easy to pack for a picnic, and delicious to eat. It's the chicken panini from the Beach Grove Cafe, a customer favourite for many heading out to the nearby beach or parks, says the cafe's Erin Bowling.

The sandwich starts with grilled Cajun chicken that is placed between slices of focaccia bread with Havarti cheese.

"It has a lot of different things on it, including a fabulous jalepeno aioli which gives it a little bit of a kick," says Bowling. So, where to take your freshly

Picnic time is perfect for barbecuing. But it's not just the traditional burgers and hot dogs for Jeet and Pal Sidhu from Bombay Joe's in Ladner Village.

The pair enjoy something a little more exotic. But that doesn't mean complicated, says Jeet who counts his take on Bombay Joe's chicken as one of his specialties.

Akin to tandoori chicken, but

substituting a regular barbecue for a clay oven, the recipe is simple to prepare and cook.

The preparation includes marinating chicken thighs and legs overnight in a mixture of yogurt, ground green chillies, red chillies, crushed garlic, and a pinch of coriander, cumin seeds, tumeric and fenugreek.

The mixture needs to be enough to cover the chicken.

When cooking it's important to remember the chicken needs to be 165 degrees inside to be

"It's not overcrowded. You can put down your barbecue and you've still got loads of room."

"Diefenbaker (Park) is probably a pretty popular choice, but if I was to go on a picnic by myself I'd go to the Secret Garden in Boundary Bay (off Centennial Parkway) that's so well kept and so beautiful," Bowling says. "It's so out of the way, you wouldn't know it's there."

What's a picnic without a great salad?

Chef Cindy Anderson from the Coast Tsawwassen Inn has just the recipe with her macadamia nut garbanzo salad—one she enjoys taking along to barbecues with her friends and family at Tsawwassen's Centennial Beach and Boundary Bay Park.

"This salad is a sure crowd-pleaser; in fact, it’s often requested by the staff at the hotel to take for home parties and barbecues," says Anderson. "It’s quick and easy to make, can be prepared earlier in the day, or the day before, and the macadamia nuts help to set the summertime tone."

Anderson adds it can be paired with grilled chicken, corn on the cob, and a dry white wine.

When you run a busy restaurant kitchen every night what's the best way to take a break and enjoy a family picnic?

For chef Roland Smith of Illuminaté Restorante in Tsawwassen, he enjoys taking to the local waters in his 20-foot boat for the afternoon.

And one of the dishes he likes to take along, which has been added to the menu for spring and summer, is salad niçoise—a salad topped with tuna.

"We don't have a lot of time usually," says Smith. "But we have a little boat and we just grab something tasty on a sunny day and go out there for an hour or two, sometimes with the kids and sometimes just me and my wife."

To make things easy and uncomplicated, dishes that can be served cold are best.

"Something like salad niçoise," Smith says, "something that's fast and easy, pre-sliced and ready to go."

Boundary Bay Airshow returns

The Boundary Bay Airshow makes a return to the summer event schedule this year as Delta's main airport gets ready to showcase a wide variety of static and flying displays.

The show took a hiatus last summer due to construction in and around the facility, but fans—as many as 10,000— are expected to flock back to the tarmac airside to see exhilarating air performances, plus take part in plenty of ground-based activities that includes a large childrens activity centre As one of the few remaining free airshows, this is a great opportunity to see some unique entertainment, said Lyle Soetaert, manager of Boundary Bay Airport.

Among those expected to take part will be local and military aviators.

"There will everything from military to corporate and business aircraft," Soetaert said.

Fresh air films Movies under the stars delight families

The Business Improvement Association of Tsawwassen (BIA) will once again delight local families and draw visitors to the community with its annual Outdoor

Movie Nights.

For its fifth year, the BIA is bringing together entertainment, local businesses and organizations, and a movie under the stars.

On clear days up to 1,000 people are known to attend the screenings, where from 6:30 p.m. until dusk they can interact with local shop owners and take in displays and demonstrations.

The film shown on July 28 at Diefenbaker Park (5579 1 Ave.) is up to the public (sponsored by Tsawwassen Collision and Randy’s Excel Tire and Auto Service)

The Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall event Aug. 20 (at 56 St. and 12 Ave.) will feature Night at the Museum.

Before the movie begins, residents can enjoy a block party with live entertainment,

including a Ronald McDonald magic show, dance groups and more.

This year, all movie nights will raise money for The Rangers of The Girl Guides of Canada through concession and popcorn sales provided by local service groups.

Farm fresh produce Earthwise Farm Market offers seasonal themes

The Aug. 4 market features Jam Fest that pairs tasty local preserves, field-fresh organic berries, and live music and art from local creators.

Held during the height of blackberry season there will be plenty for all visitors to experience.

On Sept. 15 the market's "tomato festival" bids farewell to summer and welcomes fall with more than 40 varieties of organic heirloom tomatoes, all hand-grown at the Earthwise Farm.

Visitors can sample tasty new varieties or enjoy hard-to-find favourites.

Market Days will also feature local music and art, cooking demonstrations, produce tasting, workshops on organic gardening, and tours of the Earthwise Farm.

Getting connected with B.C. agriculture

Get to know more about where your food comes from and meet the local people who grow and produce it at the seventh annual Day at the Farm.

Hosted by the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust at the Westham Island Herb Farm, A Day at the Farm features exhibitors, activities, entertainment and competitions to engage families in local agriculture.

Visitors will also have a chance to learn about internationally significant wildlife habitat and its relationship with agriculture in this area.

A big hit with visitors is the hay wagon farm tours, led by farmers, and a plough pulling demonstration. Children always enjoy the B.C. Dairy Foundation’s Moo Crew Mobile Dairy Classroom, an interactive display where they learn about the milking process.

Last year, approximately 3,000 people came out to Westham Island for the free event.

From a Strawberry Festival to an Independence Day parade, there’s plenty more to do ANNUAL SALMON BBQ When: June 3, noon to 5 p.m.

Where: Ladner Harbour Park (4905 McNeely’s Way) What: For more than four decades the Tsawwassen Shrine Club has served up salmon at Ladner Harbour Park to raise funds for community groups, including the Delta Hospital Foundation. In previous years, volunteer members have barbecued about 2,000 pounds of salmon for anywhere from 1,400 to 1,600 hungry people. Cost is $10 per adult.

FATHER'S DAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST When: June 17, 9 a.m. to noon Where: Centennial Beach (Boundary Bay Regional Park) What: The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club and Cammidge House Committee/Boundary Bay Regional Park volunteers host their annual Sunday Father's Day Pancake Breakfast where families can pack in all the pancakes and sausages they can eat while enjoying live music and a day at the beach in Boundary Bay Regional Park.

Visitors have the opportunity to buy ready picked strawberries or U-Pick strawberries (weather permitting, bring your own containers), and funds are raised for the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society through sales of hot dogs, smokies and strawberry shortcake. There has recently been a noticeable increase of incidents of fires caused by dry peat moss in potting soil. Problems are also related to fertilizers in the soil, which can act as oxidizers that accelerate fires. Many potting soils on the market today contain less dirt and more organic substances that are flammable, such as shredded wood, bark, peat moss, Styrofoam, and vermiculite.
