Naturopathic medicine is a pay for service and there is time in the 3045 minute routine appointments to investigate underlying causes of problems that other professionals may not have the time or expertise to pursue. Water purification is certainly a hot topic. I don’t recommend buying bottled water as you don’t know how long the water has been stored in plastic or if the plastic is free of BPA (Bisphenol A), a carcinogen. Most companies that sell water in five gallon jugs now use BPA plastic containers but still I choose to use three gallon glass storage containers that I get from a local wine store. Cont. on Page 6

Cortes Island writer’s new book explores 50-year-old mystery It is no secret that the Cold War was synonymous with covert military operations. Few people know, for example, that massive US Air Force B-36 intercontinental bombers – referred to as “Peacemakers” – regularly flew mock bombing exercises over major US cities, including San Francisco. It was on one of these training runs that tragedy struck B-36 Bomber 075. Just before midnight on Feb. 13, 1950, three engines on Bomber 075 caught fire over Vancouver Island. The crew was ordered to jump, and the plane ditched somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Nearly four years later, the wreck of the bomber was found by accident in a remote location in the coastal mountains of British Columbia, three hours’ flying time in the

It is important to get the water tested yearly to monitor for these levels. I also had Benjamin undergo the electrodermal testing we provide to identify and eliminate food sensitivities that may

Cold water can kill

It’s ďŹ nally Spring. The days are getting longer, the air carries a sweet fragrance and the ice has receded from the lakes. It’s a time when millions of Canadians ďŹ nally get back their favourite pastime and head out on the water in their boats. Smartboater. ca was created by the Canadian Safe Boating Council in partnership with the National Search and Rescue Secretariat to remind Canadians during Safe Boating Awareness Week, which runs from May 19th – 25th, 2012, and throughout the entire boating season to take a few extra precautions to guard against the dangers of a fall into Cold Water. Many people think that a fall into the water is no big deal. They can climb back onto the dock or swim the short distance to shore, or they can right their overturned boat and get back in. If the boat can’t be righted, they can put on their lifejacket and hold onto the boat until help arrives. The reality is when dealing with cold water those goals often can’t be

reached. It’s hard to imagine what happens should you unexpectedly ďŹ nd yourself in cold water. Dr. Gordon Giesbrecht, Professor of Thermophysiology at the University of Manitoba, has experienced ďŹ rst-hand the effects of cold water. He developed what he calls the 1-10-1 Principle to help you understand how your body will react. You will have One minute to get your breathing under control, as there is an initial gasp response followed by extreme hyperventilation. Ten minutes of meaningful movement before the muscles in your extremities lose their effectiveness, and up to one hour before you

lose consciousness due to hypothermia. If you’re not wearing a lifejacket and survive the initial shock and gasp, you have very little time before their arms and legs begin to stop functioning, preventing you from staying aoat. Studies have shown that our bodies lose heat approximately 25 times faster in water than in air of the same temperature. If you are wearing thermal protection such as a neoprene wetsuit, paddling dry suit or a oater coat/suit, it will help keep you warmer for a greater length of time. Should your boat capsize and you ďŹ nd yourself in the water, try to reduce the rate of heat loss by

climbing onto the overturned hull or any other oating object such as a cooler. If none are immediately available, remain as motionless as possible to allow your skin to warm a thin layer of water around your body. Thrashing in the water not only disturbs this layer of warmer water but also accelerates heat loss. If you are alone, tuck your legs and fold your arms across your chest in the HELP (Heat Escape Lessening Position) to protect your vital organs. If you are with others, huddle together interlacing your arms and legs and pressing your torsos together to preserve body heat. One of the big questions is whether

to stay with the boat or swim to shore. You should only consider swimming for shore if you are wearing a lifejacket, your chances for rescue are very slim and the distance to shore is manageable. (Be aware that the effort involved in swimming will increase heat loss and adversely affect muscle movement.) Keeping these considerations in mind and taking proactive steps to protect against the dangers of a fall into Cold Water will go far towards making your boating activities safer and more enjoyable. Remember too that, in Canada, many of our larger bodies of water remain cold throughout the summer.

FISHING CORNER Sean Ortiz, Brian Toner & Jesse Newman

Sean Ortiz and Jesse Newman, members of the B.C. Lions football team, recently attended the C.R. Eagles football camp at the Sportsplex in Campbell River. Ed Schmuland and Brian Toner took the players out for an afternoon ďŹ shing trip and the players hooked into a number of ďŹ sh and had 1 keeper. Shelter Point and the Hump are still the main destinations in Campbell River; small uorescent plugs are getting some ďŹ sh in the 14 to 24 pound range. Painters Lodge is open for the season. On the opening Saturday, 14 boats were booked and ďŹ sh caught range between 6 and 24 pounds. In the peak ďŹ shing season coming up as many as 30 plus boats will be out on the water. I met up with John Robilliard who is spending his 4th year at Painters. Last year during the 3 day women’s ďŹ shing derby, 2100 hundred pounds of salmon were caught. Freshwater ďŹ shing has improved in all areas in Courtenay and Campbell River. The north end of Wolf Lake has been ďŹ shing well, trolling a wedding band. Fishing from shore has produced trout using Power bait at many of the local lakes such as the Lower Quinsam, where the trout can get up to 3 pounds. At Echo Lake, the pan size trout can be caught on black woolly bugger ies or casting lures from shore. Discovery Pier is now open and the locals gather to socialize with the ďŹ shermen and tourists. Fishing licenses are available at the concession and tackle can be rented. This is a great spot to watch the anglers trying for the big one while enjoying snacks, a coffee or ice cream. The public washrooms have been renovated. Mel Adams is the lone angler on the board with his catch of 28 pounds on April 20th.

Sporting overalls and pink shirts, Comox Valley women are making history as they work to give a local family a home. The Women Build component of Habitat for Humanity’s build project in Courtenay is the first of its kind in B.C., and Women Build co-ordinator Cristi Sacht says Comox Valley women are getting pumped up. “They absolutely

to have four more teams of five to 10 women come on board and start fundraising to help reach their goal. “I’m rounding up troops right now, it’s like we’re trying to build an army of women that are going to tackle this endeavour,” says Sacht, adding she’s looking for women from the skilled trades to help too because this allwomen group aren’t only fundraising — they’re building. However, Sacht says unskilled women shouldn’t be scared off because each team only has to build for a minimum of one day, and it’s okay if some women would rather just fundraise or just help with the construction — though she prefers that women participate in both parts of the initiative. The fact that it is the first Women Build in the entire province and we’re doing it in our little town of the Comox Valley is absolutely fabulous.” Habitat for Humanity will build six homes — in the form of three duplexes — off Piercy Avenue near Eighth Street with construction expected to start late summer or early fall. Different local groups have signed up to raise money to build each unit. The Women Build group has six teams, and has raised about $11,000 so far with a goal of $100,000, according to Sacht, who adds in-kind donations of service and supplies are also welcome, and all donations are tax refundable. One in three Canadian kids are left sitting on the sidelines In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers. Ever since she was a little girl, Casey, 17, knew she wanted to play professional golf, but her family’s budget was stretched with a busy household of seven young children.

“We knew that Casey had extraordinary talent, but we could not afford the expensive membership and green fees,” said Casey’s mom, Julie MacNeil. “The last thing we wanted was to keep her off the golf course due to affordability. She had such big dreams for herself.” Kids who are able

to participate in organized sport and recreation, outside of school hours, gain many short and long term benefits including increased self-esteem, greater self-confidence, leadership skills, and better grades. “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives, not just their childhood years,”

said Dan Thompson, president of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Programs like Canadian Tire Jumpstart are dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can participate in organized sport and recreation.” Despite the financial hardships many Canadian

parents are facing, there is a way to get kids into the game, no matter what barrier. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped 417,835 children like Casey get in the game. “We couldn’t be more proud of what our daughter has Cont. on Page 18

Know before you go this spring Spring rains combined with melting snowpacks and rising streams can affect road and highway conditions.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure urges you to be prepared for spring driving conditions by checking

DriveBC before leaving on a trip. Heavy snowfall this winter has resulted in the fifth-highest snowpack in the

province since the 1950s. Several days of warm weather have led to high snowmelt rates and quick moving rivers and streams in

parts of B.C. This, combined with saturated hillsides, caused six washouts on provincial roads this past week.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution and look for pooling water in low-lying areas, near creek and river crossings.

Motorists can check current highway conditions on the Drive BC website. Motorists can also see the highway conditions in real time, with 200 highway webcams strategically placed throughout the province. All this information is available online at: http://drivebc.ca Another way to “know before you go” is to follow DriveBC and TranBC on Twitter and get up-todate information on your desktop or your mobile phone. These Twitter feeds are available at: http:// twitter.com/tranbc and http://twitter.com/ drivebc

Help kids play sports this May 26 From Page 17 accomplished,” said MacNeil. “This year Casey is heading off to Charleston Southern University on a full golf scholarship and we have Jumpstart to thank for giving her the opportunity to continue to perfect her game.” Help kids in your community by visiting Canadian Tire, Mark’s, Canadian Tire gas and Pita Pit locations throughout the month of May and on Jumpstart Day, Sat., May 26 to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball, with all proceeds going to Canadian Tire Jumpstart.
