Long-lost project comes full circle

More than two decades since it was started, the dainty crochet cotton medallions awaited a home where someone could complete its mission in life.

Likely no one will ever know where it was for the 20-plus years it was missing, but last month it returned home.

The question of a business case for Keating access from Highway 17 – an ongoing part of the revitalization discussion – was a chicken-and-egg conversation.

“Some are of the belief that we need to grow the business park, because then we’re going to create the congestion and catch the province’s awareness,” Jensen said. “I think there’s a compelling business case right now for the overpass for the safety of the people that are already out there.

“What that will then do is help with some of the broadening of the business we bring to Keating.”

The goal was to create a focus type group that could back the district, and vice versa, to help create a vibrant business core.

The meeting provided plenty of business folk who showed interest.

“Now we’re looking to cut the group down to a working group,” Jensen said. “One of the things we want to do, and Mayor [Alastair] Bryson stressed, we want them involved because they’re going to help us shape the solution. We had the experts in the room. … This is their livelihood, these people are good at it.”

The next step is creating a group with a goal of envisioning Keating in 2020 or 2030.

Research lab should stay alive Today, May 16, a United Nations right-to-food expert leaves Canada after an 11 day visit to analyze what some watchdogs have called “a broken food system” within our country.

Food production and safety are undoubtedly pillars of a healthy lifestyle in Canada. It takes hard work to ensure we know where our food comes from, what’s in it and how it will affect our bodies.

Inspectors are the link that help the distribution of this information to consumers.

They are responsible for making sure what’s on the label of our food is the same as what is contained in the food itself.

Sometimes, things go awry. Remember the contaminated spinach debacle of 2009? The listeriosis outbreak in processed meats of 2008?

The federal government plans to axe jobs at the Centre for Plant Health, located in North Saanich as part of a budget-cutting measure (see page A5). The idea is to phase out the entire operation and consolidate operations at a lab in Summerland.

Our MP Elizabeth May doesn’t believe just 12 jobs will be affected, as stated by the feds.

With contract and other positions factored in, it could be closer to 35.

We as consumers and residents of the Peninsula could lose in two ways. With 100 inspector jobs being cut nationwide, there are far fewer eyes watching what goes into our food.

We also worry about losing these skilled workers if these positions are eliminated.

Greater Victoria is known as a hub for science and technology, which has economic benefits for the population.

Whether it’s 12 or 35 jobs going under the guillotine, we should be concerned about the decisions being made at the federal level which could negatively affect us locally.

Like the News Review, the Centre for Plant Health celebrates its 100th birthday this year.

We’d rather see it celebrate another 100 than see the lights go out at our food research laboratory.

On the Duke Point run this meant at least eight and a half hours, “thus ensuring the crew at least one hour at double time daily and often more,” Harvey writes. “Later it became a scheduled overtime route.”

It’s just too fine a day to complain I have no complaint today, not with the SBA, teachers, governments or my aching back.

I read the Review this morning then headed out to my garden where I watched wall lizards hunt for their breakfast. One tenacious critter was trying to climb the side of a round bottom flower pot, but was unable to

hang on in a dozen attempts. I wondered how clever this animal was, so placed a wooden stake as an access ramp.

After three more failed attempts to climb the pot’s side, it found my ramp and was into the pot in a jiffy.

We have had wall lizards in our yard for perhaps 10 years now. I understand they have spread since being released

from a little zoo near Durrance Lake in the 1970s. We used to have pill bugs in abundance in our garden, but hardly see one now. As a result, our seedlings are faring much better.

It’s just too fine a day to complain about anything, don’t you think?

The meeting will provide a wonderful opportunity for Ms. Dear and the public in general, not only to visit the centre and enjoy its unrivalled attractions but also to learn just why the SSCA members so enjoy contributing, through our sister city partnerships, to life in Sidney and on the Peninsula.

Understanding why Sidney town council and the citizens of Sidney and nearby area – since 1984 when Sidney was sistered with Cairns, Australia; since 1996 when Sidney was sistered with Anacortes; and since 2008 when Sidney was sistered with Niimi, Japan – have strongly supported SSCA activities at very little cost, would clarify why the SSCA through its support of such Sidney and Peninsula incentives as the Town of Sidney calendar, various art

and artist exchanges, student exchange visits, retention of the Sidney-Anacortes ferry route, and the Sidney and Anacortes summer and Christmas parades, joins so enthusiastically with many other volunteer community organizations and ventures to attract visitors and businesses to the area.

Double Vision The sudden onset of double vision is a frightening experience.

Double vision occurs when the two eyes don’t point at the same object. Each eye sends an image to the brain which attempts to superimpose the two images. When this works we have depth perception, when it doesn’t we have “diplopia” or double vision.

Some people experience occasional diplopia when they are tired or taking certain medications.

This occurs because the central control of the muscles used to align the eyes is compromised.

This condition, while a nuisance, disappears when the cause is remedied.

Sometimes diplopia occurs for no apparent reason. Possible causes include a stroke, a tumor, diabetes or multiple sclerosis. It is important to have a medical evaluation to ensure nothing untoward has occurred.

Often normal vision returns gradually. Spectacles with prism can be helpful in aligning the images until the diplopia has resolved or stabilized. If you suffer from double vision, be sure to have a thorough examination by an optometrist regularly.

Cycle to Protect Our Coast will spend four days spinning from Campbell River to Victoria over the May long weekend and end on the legislature lawn.

“We love to cycle, but we also want to build some information about the whole pipeline and tanker issue,” said organizer Sheri Farinha.

They’ll stop in Central Saanich Monday, May 21.

Along the way CPOC members will chat with interested residents about the economic and ecological dangers of the oil tankers associated with both the Northern Gateway pipeline and Kinder Morgan expansion proposals.

“When you love something, you stand up for it,” said Farinha. “We care about our area and we want to prevent super-sized tanker spills of bitumen and condensate … from washing up on Canada’s most productive coastline.”

Along the way they’ll have a petition to sign, writ-

ten information and offer “five salient points” for those seeking more information.

Farinha is also wracking her brain to come up with a demonstration to show how long a tanker is.

“I want folks to understand how far 350 metres is because that’s how big tankers are. It is a huge distance, these are ships that have no chance of stopping in a mile or turning.

“It’s inevitable, we’re going to have an oil spill here,” she said.

CPOC will roll into Centennial Park just before noon Monday, when Elizabeth May, MP for SaanichGulf Islands is set to speak.

“British Columbian voices need to be heard. The federal government can’t just assume that this is in the national interest or in British Columbia’s interest,” May said of the pipeline issue.

“Cyclists are welcome to join us in riding the 22 kilometres to the Victoria legislature, where we will have a community discussion about protecting our coasts and hand over the petitions gathered along the tour,” Farinha said.

Victoria’s Red Barn Markets are brimming with all things local and delicious this spring.

From farm-fresh asparagus to tart and tangy rhubarb, the flavours of the Capital Region are providing plenty of culinary inspiration, not to mention support for local farmers, notes the Red Barn Markets’ Russ Benwell. Looking ahead, sunnier days bring the promise of berry y season, salad fixings and soon enough, sweet yellow corn.

In the meat department, house-made sausages and other products are identified with special tags as gluten-free or glutenfriendly.

“We’ve really developed quite a following with the celiac community,” Benwell says.

“We want to be a store that suits everybody’s lifestyle,” he explains. “There’s so many health concerns out there, people are starting to get away from the wheat products.”

Specialty products, however, do not mean specialty pricing; the success Red Barn enjoys with customers comes in striking the balance between quality and value.

Royalty gets chuckle at donor thank you The Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation got some good news at a thank you event it hosted Thursday.

At its donor appreciation lunch, at the Brentwood Bay Resort and Spa, the foundation learned that Betty and Wally Spence, both deceased, left $1.5 million to the non-profit.

Wally was the founding president of the organization and Betty volunteered with the group for several years until her death last year.

In addition, Brentwood Bay Resort announced a $10,000 donation to the foundation.

About 87 people attended the event and heard entertainment by Her Majesty the Queen – not the real queen, but impersonator Carolyn Sadowska, who had the group laughing with jokes and stunts.

When you read this I’ll be in Cedar (God willing) visiting my brother and searching his garden for ideas to pass on to you. In the meantime, here at home, what can I tell you that is new and fascinating? Not much I fear, but let’s see what we can come up with.

I have spent some time this morning watering, both inside and on the balcony.

My daughter will be here in my absence.

She isn’t much of a gardener, but I’ll leave her a note and probably phone at least once to make sure she is OK (and to ask if she has watered).

I had hoped the pole beans would be up, but not a sign of life in that container, which causes me concern as they had large roots started and should have made an appearance by now.

However, I realize I am often impatient and if I would just be more trusting, things would appear exactly when they should, not when I expect. It is

so wonderful to have leaves appear when you have put in a small brown lump and, lo and behold, here comes a nice sturdy plant.

I’m to be away for a week and by that time they will either have shown up, or I’ll have to re-plant and should have beans by Christmas.

One of the greatest gardeners I have known was an elderly man who never planted anything until May 24. His garden was always a marvel.

So, you people who haven’t got around to planting anything can relax. There doesn’t seem to be any rush.

I know it’s fun to be the first to have new potatoes, but it isn’t a race. Yours will taste marvellous even if your neighbour has already been boasting about his super early ones. They are probably riddled with wire worms. I think this is what is meant by “sour grapes.”

I’d wait for a bit longer before planting (out in the vegetable plot) things like started tomato plants and squash.

How about making up a pot or two, or a couple of hanging baskets instead? I know not everyone likes marigolds, but they look like sunshine in a pot, especially if surrounded by yellow pansies, which smell so nice. Some white bocoppa to trail over the pot edge would be a happy choice, or maybe some trailing blue lobelia.

We will soon need a bigger pot if I keep adding things I like, and there are hundreds of choices, so get yourself to a nursery and have a wonderful time. Just remember everything you purchase has to be planted, so please take it easy on both your aching back and your shrinking pocket book.

THE ARTS White hosts bluesman Fresh off a Junofest performance and Juno nomination, Saanichton bluesman Bill Johnson will perform this weekend.

Thanks to an older brother’s music collection, the blues rang through Johnson’s childhood.

While other kids read comics, Chuck Berry was his Superman. By the age of 15 he began a career as a professional guitarist studying and gigging in smoky bars.

Eventually superb bluesmen such as Donald Ray Johnson took notice and began to use Johnson on their recordings.

Artists including the legendary Hubert Sumlin, Chess Record’s Cash McCall and Alligator Records’ Son Seals, began to call on him when they needed a guitar player.

Johnson’s most recent CD, Still Blue, was nominated for three Maple Blues Awards, a Western Canadian Music Award and a Juno. The Juno for best blues recording went to MonkeyJunk for “To Behold.”

It is with a sad heart that we announce the passing of Dr. Ruby Anne Commandeur. On Tuesday April 24, 2012, Ruby passed away suddenly of heart failure at her home in North Saanich, B.C. Ruby spent most of her childhood years growing up in Nelson, B.C., where she attended L.V. Rogers Secondary. Upon leaving high school, Ruby attended both the University of British Columbia and University of Victoria before heading to Toronto to complete her education at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. She received her Doctorate of Chiropractic in 1989. After graduation, she moved to Victoria B.C. where she began her practice, helping and healing patients for almost 15 years. She was a women who worked tirelessly to create space for kindness, compassion, understanding and empowerment in the lives of her family, friends, clients and community around her.

Ruby was predeceased by her younger brother, George Allen Commandeur. Her light of wisdom, courage, strength and beauty will be deeply missed by her husband, Ivan Mishchenko; daughters, Nina and Kira; son, Robert; parents, George and Florida Commandeur; brothers, Victor (Laurilee), Leo (Debbie), Colin (Paula); sister, Jackie (Leonard); nieces and nephews, Sheena, Drew, Samantha, Maddison, MyKayla, Nicole, Cole, Grayson, Chloe, Adam, Ollie, Eirywinn and many close friends.

On April 1, 2023 the Government of Canada plans to start raising the age of eligibility for OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) from 65 to 67.*
