The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay arrived here on Monday, and will be continuing through the city on Wednesday. The tour has retraced the Canadian segment of Hansen’s original Man in Motion tour, but this time the phrase is “many in motion,” as 7,000 participants from across Canada have become medal bearers. They are walking, wheeling and biking their segments of the tour, and passing along the Rick Hansen Medal. The anniversary relay is a 12,000 km, nine-month, 600-community tour. It began Aug. 24, 2011 at Cape Spear – the easternmost point in Canada. The tour came from Chilliwack and wound through Abbotsford on Monday, ending with a celebration at Rick Hansen secondary. BC Lions general manager Wally Buono was one of the medal bearers. Hansen is scheduled to be in Abbotsford on Wednesday, when the relay resumes from his namesake schooL. The medal will drop onto the school field with a skydiver, and Hansen will wheel the medal out of the school for the first leg of its journey to Mission. On of the medal bearers along Downes Road will be Vancouver Canucks icon Trevor Linden, at 11 a.m.

An Abbotsford teen says she did not attend her graduation ceremony in 2009 because she was hurt by allegations that she had lied about receiving sexual text messages from a teacher. School calendar approved The Abbotsford board of education has approved a two-week spring break for 2013. Next year’s holiday will take place on the weeks of March 18 and 25. The first week coincides with the one-week break set by the Ministry of Education. The second week runs into the Good Friday and Easter Monday statutory holidays. Boards of education have been required to hold a public consultation whenever they plan to deviate from the one-week holiday set by the ministry. The ministry has passed legislation that now permits districts to set their own calendars, starting with the 2013-14 school year. Lamb residence officially opens Abbotsford News
Darla Rasmussen has finally found a place to call home. The official opening of the Christine Lamb Residence, a 41-unit supportive housing development for women and children at risk of homelessness at 3096 Clearbrook Rd., was held on May 11. Rasmussen was the final speaker at the opening. “I didn’t prepare anything, I’m a heart speaker,” she said. “If you had known me a year ago, I was just hanging on. I was a broken spirit.” Rasmussen moved into the newly built housing on March 5. “Through this residence, I have been filled with so much love and encouragement by the staff and the other women that live here.” Prior to moving in, Rasmussen didn’t have a stable residence. She couch surfed for several months and more recently, lived in
Agassiz with a family in their basement. “They fed me, they took care of me, they loved me, but it wasn’t a suitable place to have my children,” Rasmussen said. She began to feel hopeless and wasn’t sure if anything would come together for her. However, since finding her new home, things have turned around for Rasmussen. “It was really empowering, but really scary at the same time,” she said. “I’ve never lived on my own before, and since I’ve come here, I’ve really had to come into my own as a woman and a mother.” Rasmussen currently cares for her two boys, Sedar and Phox, on weekends and is in the process of regaining full custody. She also found a full-time job working for Xyolhemeylh Child and Family Services. “My passion is all about prevention and helping people through transition in their life,”
she said. Aside from working, she volunteers and goes to school. Rasmussen is grateful for the opportunity to improve her life and she is already making progress. “Through this experience, I see myself in a different way. I have more confidence, I’m starting to recognize the gifts that I have, and as some would say, I’m starting to sparkle.” For more information, visit wrsfv.ca.

Sports is about competition First they – the adults in charge – took away ribbons on Sports Day. Then they stopped keeping score in kids’ hockey games. Now Canada’s 56 national sports bodies want to take competition out of other youth games and focus on fun and skills rather than winning. For example, in Ontario they want to change soccer tournaments for players younger than eight to “festivals,” in which no standings would be kept, no MVPs selected, no winners and losers. The greatest part of sports is competition, trying your best to win. Not at all costs – that’s why sports have rules. But why bother playing if you’re not trying to win? Friendships form out of a common interest, and a common goal, not shaking hands. That’s sportsmanship, and it already exists. Failure, making mistakes, is how we learn – even if it is just how to cope with that. It breeds desire, builds character, and from which grow compelling stories
of overcoming adversity. This new national program, under the guidance of Sport Canada, is not wrong in wanting to focus on skills over winning. Everyone develops at a different rate. But natural ability and individual skill alone don’t win championships or medals. Determination is vital, fuelling the hours of practice required to perfect the skills necessary to succeed. Even then, intelligence, teamwork and tactics are key factors, as are risk and luck, timing and circumstance. How do you develop those traits if you take competition out of the picture? Go to an elementary school at lunch hour and you won’t see them practising, but playing games. Ask them the score and the ones competing will tell you. Sports, like life, aren’t fair. They are about winning. Again, what would be the point if the players weren’t trying to win? – Black Press

Other Hand Amazing the difference a day or two makes. Last week most of the province was cold and wet, with snow falling on the Coquihalla. A warm weekend and suddenly we have wildfires, outdoor burning bans, and home evacuations in the central Interior. Apparently in the Kamloops fire district, the forests are “tinder dry,” though I’ll bet that at mid-elevation levels there’s still lots of snow under the tree canopy. Apparently, snow conditions across much of the province, despite the “dryness” created by the sudden onset of hot weather, are 135 per cent of normal, and in the remainder it’s something like 120 per cent of normal. In other words, on the ground it’s wet with melting snow threatening serious flooding – above the ground we have explosive conditions portending disaster
in the woods. Fire and pestilence! What a great way to kick off a late spring, early summer. I promised back at Christmas that I’d take my eldest grandson, and perhaps a cousin or two of his, fishing on a couple of my favourite Interior lakes. Due to ice on the lakes, the promise was not expected to be delivered until late this month, and now it suddenly seems possible we could be spending the evening without a cheery blaze, because today in the southern Interior, an open burning ban will be instituted. Fortunately, the forest service usually allows campfires, but if things are so bad in the woods right now, you can bet even they will be off-limits later in the year. In the meantime, I’d be bracing for wet feet if I lived on the lowlands adjacent to the Fraser River. With the snowpack this year, I’ve long been predicting that conditions are right for a possible flood of epic proportions. The only thing, in my uneducated opinion, that will prevent the Fraser from breeching a dike or two is a return to long, cool stretches of weather. If that doesn’t occur, and selfishly I would rather it didn’t as I’ve had enough of
cloud and cool this year, the economic impact could be severe. I’d hate to have to tell my grandkids we can’t go fishing because the freeway is closed due to flooding, and the farms that raise our food and support our economy are in ruins.
Sounds like the apocaplyse, but it has happened before, and it is only a matter of time before it happens again. In a worse-case scenario, catastrophic flooding in the valley will essentially cut off the Lower Mainland from the rest of the province. Road traffic on both sides of the Fraser out to Hope could be closed, rail lines washed out. No way to get our goods to the ports, no way to get food and other goods to the Interior, other than perhaps the “long and slow way” through Whistler to Lillooet,
where incidentally, the current wildfire has shut down the roads, and thence to Highway 97. Other than that route, things will grind to a halt. Farms and homes, shopping malls and schools will be inundated. Pollution, contamination and environmental damage will be far-reaching and long-lasting. Sounds like the apocalypse, but it has happened before, and it is only a matter of time until it happens again. Today, however, unlike 1948 and 1894, the cost of damage, remediation and loss will be enormous because of development and investment, and the huge economic ties we now have to the transport of commodities. And since insurance companies are only willing to provide flood coverage to those who live on mountains, or well above flood-plain, the personal and corporate losses could, in many respects, be crippling. So enjoy the sunshine and fabulous weather we are now experiencing, but remember that it may come at great cost to all of us.

8 people WANTED: 30 15-year sentence with hearing loss
I replied to your online question about Brent Parent’s road rage trial and the suitability of his five-and-ahalf-year prison sentence. My answer was no, I do not think that his sentence was suitable for the crime concerned, and this seemed to be the majority vote. I am sickened by the Canadian justice system and its “tickle my butt” penalties. I have been a proud Canadian for 33 years, although I was born in Europe. Why don’t we have the intestinal fortitude to hand out punishments
that fit the crime as they do south of the 49th Parallel? This man is someone who should be taught to realize that anger is not a solution to his day-to-day issues and consequentially should pay a harsh price for his actions. The severity of his punishment should match the severity of his actions. This would, in some way, offer some sense of closure in this tragic incidient. This man should have been sentenced to 15 years with no chance of parole for 10. John Moffitt

Trucker killed
An Abbotsford truck driver who died in a collision in Calgary on Friday is being remembered as a hero. Baldev Grewal, 44, pushed colleague Balwinder Sidhu out of the way as an SUV
careened towards them, according to Calgary Police Service. The two had legally parked their semis in a median to exchange tie-down chains just before 2 p.m. After hitting Grewal, the northbound SUV then travelled into the
southbound lanes and struck another vehicle before coming to a stop. Police say neither speed nor alcohol are considered to be factors in the crash. Grewal and Sidhu were co-workers at a trucking firm in Surrey.
Guilty of assault Two Abbotsford men have pleaded guilty to their involvement in a violent assault that took place in August 2010. Bhavdeep Deol, 23, and Herman Sidhu, 22, were originally charged with aggravated assault but have pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of assault causing bodily harm. Co-accused Gurparit Gill, 33, was sentenced in May 2011 to a four-year prison term after pleading guilty to aggravated assault. The trio attacked a 24-year-old man on Aug. 22, 2010 as he left Finnegan’s Pub in the 33700 block of King Road. The victim was punched, kicked and stabbed three times in the arms and torso. The three assailants left the scene in a black Honda Civic, and were stopped by police near Albert Dyck Park on Walmsley Avenue. The victim recovered in hospital, and the trio were arrested and charged in November 2010.

FRASER Sylvia Sylvia passed away peacefully at 1:10 pm, Thursday, April 12th, 2012 surrounded by her family at the Menno Hospital. She will be sadly missed by her husband George, son Tony and daughter Debbie, grandchildren, Jennifer, Melanie, Miranda and Iris plus seven great grandchildren. A special thanks to the workers at Menno Hospital for the wonderful care Sylvia received during her two year and three month stay.
BAERG Henry R.
Henry R. Baerg of Chilliwack, BC passed away in Chilliwack on Tuesday, May 8, 2012. Henry was born on August 12,1918 in Alexanderthal, South Russia to John J. & Margaret (Wiebe) Baerg. Henry grew up in Saskatchewan before the family settled in Coaldale, Alberta. After much struggle, Henry decided to become a follower of Jesus Christ at the age of 17, was baptized in the summer of 1937 & joined the Coaldale MB Church. In February 1941 he married Justina Anne Wiebe and they began a life of service together. After studies at MBBC in Manitoba, Tabor College and Wichita State University in Kansas (earning an MA in History) H.R. was ordained into the ministry & served as pastor of First Baptist Church in Durham, KS, then at Henderson MB Church in Henderson, NE. In 1956 H.R. became professor of Christian Education and History at MBBC & Dean of Students in Winnipeg, spending the first three summers as Director of Camp Arnes. After six years of teaching he received a call from the Portage Avenue MB church in 1962 to pastor the congregation and responded with great enthusiasm. During this time he also worked on a PhD in education. A great challenge presented itself when H.R. became president of Winkler Bible Institute in 1969. The school underwent a very dynamic period of growth and he was able to exercise his capacities to the full. With keen devotion, he recruited staff and students, some from as far away as Africa and India. In 1979 he was excited to become the pastor of the Kingwood Bible (MB) Church in Salem, Oregon. Following semiretirement in 1982, came a total of five one-year interim pastorates at Kamloops MB church, Grace Mennonite church (Winkler), Elm Creek MB church, Lakeview MB church (Lethbridge) and finally Henderson, Nebraska again. Then Henry’s last pastorate was with the small Immanuel Baptist church in Salem, Oregon. He was greatly appreciated by many people and congregations that he pastored throughout his
extensive ministry. In 1993 a final major move to Chilliwack took place. Henry and BAERG Anne spent many memorable hours together with guests and in visitations before Anne, his loving and supportive companion of 60 years, passed away in March 2001. In May 2002 Henry married Erika Miller of Edmonton. Henry also enjoyed traveling and involved his children in a number of cross continent road trips. Other adventures included organizing tours around the world, taking four mission campaigns to India and 12 trips to Israel and beyond as tour leader, including two trips to the USSR. H.R. possessed a great desire for his children to live for God and he played a significant role in directing them in that way. He encouraged youth to get an education and exercised guidance and direction to thousands of old, middle-aged and young people. Henry’s enthusiasm was infectious. People of all ages were drawn to him and he was graced by their friendship in return. He visited the sick and bereaved and was blessed to receive the same in his last years from generous care givers and family members. Henry is survived by his wife Erika, of Toronto, 6 children: Don from Berlin, Eleanor from Chilliwack, Sam (Eileen) from Salina KS, Charity (James) Peters from Winkler, Paul from Los Angeles, David (Lorna) from Winnipeg; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 1 sister, 3 brothers & their spouses; 1 sister-in-law; two step-children. He was predeceased by his first wife Anne, 1 grandson, 5 brothers and 3 sisters. Services to commemorate the life of H.R. Baerg will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Viewing is at 10:30 am at Central Community Church, 46100 Chilliwack Central Rd., Chilliwack, BC; burial at 12 pm at Little Mountain Cemeteries; service at 1:30 pm at Central Community Church. MACFARLANE Lia Our mom has gone home to be with the Lord. Lia Macfarlane, nee Vanderhouven, passed away peacefully on May 10th, 2012 at the Sherwood Manor Home in Abbotsford. Oma fought a long and hard fight with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Lia is predeceased by her husband Bob, in 2002, daughter Donna, son-in-law Gary, sister Zus and two brothers, Hank and Henny. She is survived by her 3 sons, David (Tara) Macfarlane of Sardis, John Macfarlane of Vancouver, and Bo (Jennifer) Macfarlane of Bridesville. She is further survived by her grandchildren; Jodi (Randy), Bryanne (TJ), Jordan, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Shane, Ben, Danny, Rebecca and James; as well as many relatives in Holland and Ontario. Life was hard for mom after dad passed away. She loved him dearly and mourned him until the day she died. We take solace in that she is no longer suffering and is reunited in Heaven with our dad and others who had passed before her. Mom’s great loves in this world were her children and grandchildren. It was impossible not to know how much she loved all of us. Another great love was for her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Mom’s faith in God helped so much throughout her life but in particular in the last couple of years when her battle with cancer intensified. Mom had many friends whom she adored and were so kind and helpful, in particular Sandra Bull, whose support during mom’s final months goes beyond words. Our family wishes to thank all her many friends who filled her life with joy and supported her. There will be a Celebration of Life Ceremony on Friday, May 18th, at 10:30 am at the Cascade Community Church in Abbotsford. Mom loved flowers; however, she is in Heaven now and has all the tulips and daffodils she could ever dream of. Therefore, in lieu of flowers please donate to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Salvation Army, both of which were near and dear to her heart.

8 MONTH TERM/ MATERNITY LEAVE COVERAGE HUMAN RESOURCE COORDINATOR (EXTERNAL) Stó:lô Nation, requires the services of a Human Resource Coordinator to fill a 8 Month Maternity Leave Term (plus 1 month Job shadowing period starting June/July 2012) with the Finance and Administration Department. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: • Must have a college education and/or certifications in Business Administration and Human Resource Management • Actual experience (minimum of 1 year) in any or all of the tasks cited in the specific duties and responsibilities • Must have the ability to operate a computerized personnel database • Must have mathematics and computer skills (EXCEL/ MS OFFICE ) is a desirable characteristic supplemented by an aptitude for detailed work, ability to follow instructions, and possess strong analytical skills • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to establish rapport with people of all educational and occupational backgrounds • Must have the ability for being organized, and must have good coordination and monitoring skills and able to keep good recording system • Must have the ability to deal tactfully with occasionally difficult employment and employment-related situations • Successful candidates will be required to provide the following if screened in for an interview: • Proof of education documentation • References: Three names and phone numbers of recent supervisors • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Drivers’ License • Must successfully pass the required pre-employment RCMP Criminal records Check SALARY RANGE: Will be based on qualifications/experience TYPE OF POSITION: 8 month Term (August 2012 to March 31, 2013) Full-time and subject to 3-month probationary period and planned performance evaluations.
