Interior Savings participate in a Canadian Cooperative Association’s Women’s Mentorship Program. Each year the program provides a professional development opportunity to women leaders of financial co-operatives in developing countries and builds a body of knowl-

edge and experience related to the specific needs of women in financial co-operatives Heidi Hyokki, the official host for this program has travelled to Africa twice as part of the CCA Mentorship Program and knows first-hand how the experience can change the lives of an individual and an entire community.

“I am excited that Interior Savings has been chosen to participate in this incredible program. This is a month long project where women from credit unions in Africa come to Canada to learn the Canadian credit union system and to use the skills they acquire here to help grow their credit unions back home,” says Hyokki.

“We are honoured to be part of such a

life changing experience for these women.

This is a unique opportunity for them to develop leadership skills and learn general lending practices. Interior Savings has worked with CCA in the past providing managerial resources by sending employees to Africa so we recognize the value and learning opportunity this program provides,” says Kathy Conway, President and CEO of Interior Savings.

Interior Savings will be hosting Ahiabu from May 10th to May 20th.

Energy and emissions planning workshop held for Clearwater and Barriere Jill Hayward, North Thompson Star/Journal A recent workshop held in Barriere was about “business as usual” in the communities of Barriere and Clearwater, and what this would mean for future greenhouse gas emissions, and how these could be reduced over the next several years by setting achievable targets. The workshop was part of the BC Hydro Community Energy and Emissions Planning: QuickStart

Program, with facilitators Community Energy Planners (CEA) Megan Lohmann, and Peter Robinson.

Participants attended from the District of Barriere and Clearwater including mayors, council members and key stakeholders.

April Shaw, called in to the workshop from BC Hydro to explain a number of interesting opportunities that BC Hydro has available to support actions in provincial communities.

She advised that T12

tube lighting will soon no longer be available, and therefore advised small business owners currently using this lighting to consider changing their lights, noting BC Hydro currently has a $10,000 cost incentive on a lighting retro-fit.

Shaw went on to add that BC Hydro also has a Powersmart Program for large businesses who spend over $200,000 annually on electricity.

As well there is a new construction program which includes a lighting defined program that

includes cash incentives for the builder. There is also a new home energy star program package with an $800 rebate incentive for energy star appliances.

Most importantly though she explained BC Hydro offers a program for those on low incomes that provides retro fitting opportunities. The program requires a free assessment done by an approved contractor for those who qualify within the income bracket. The assessment looks at; insulation in attics, draft

nity, saying by working together there will be a “focusing on crosspollination of community ideas from both towns”.

She noted community planning is required to address our fears about climate change and available energy in the future, with such planning bringing “hope for the future.”

“Both communities have done a good job with their OCP’s (Official Community Plan) and addressing emissions aggressively,” said Lohmann, “The future will be quite different from the past, and planning for the future will allow us to prepare for what future scenarios may be.”

She asked, “What if climate change is a

Lohmann noted the four ‘R’s’ of importance regarding energy planning for the future: 1) reduce energy demand, 2) re-use waste heat. 3) renewable heat sources, and 4) renewable energy for electricity.

This kind of planning also involves answering questions such as, “Where to start with buildings?” and “Where to start with transportation?”

Lohmann said the model used for the workshop would use the following stats for each community based on their individual OCP’s: Barriere with a 10 per cent greenhouse gas reduction by 2020, and a 33 per cent reduction by 2050; Clearwater with 33 per cent by 2020, and 80 per cent by 2050.

Participants in the workshop then considered the planning actions defined for their community related to energy conservation and green house gas emissions; defining those already accomplished or implemented, those being worked on, those to be considered, and actions that were deemed to be not a consideration for the community.

Council approved $500 in funds to the North Thompson Arts Council with the allocation of $400 as a grant-in-aid and $100 for the sponsorship of a planter box.

The purpose of the cedar planter boxes are to encourage the growth of edible plants within a small cofined space. The project encourages awareness of local food security as well as provides an avenue for local art talent to display their wares.

Hockey boards for arena Over the last several years the Sportsplex has been replacing the wooden hockey boards with steel when the boards are in need of repair or rebuilding noted Chief Administrative Officer Leslie Groulx. Be aware bears are out warns CO Yevonne Cline Bears are coming out of hibernation and searching for food, said Clearwater conservation officer Kevin Van Damme. â&#x20AC;&#x153; If you spot a bear just be aware and take appropriate caution.

Move slowly, and back out of the area,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Bears are lured into peoplesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; backyards by: household garbage, pet and livestock food, bird feeders, food scraps and smells from uncleaned barbeques, compost bins, orchards, and garden produce. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once a bear gets a taste of garbage itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be back, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There have been sightings close to town so be on the look out," advises Van Damme.

The local conservation officer wants the public to know that a grizzly bear sighting has been reported up around the Camp 2 area. "There are no elevated concerns," he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153; Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just close to town."

Grizzlies are not new to the area. They have been spotted on Raft, up in the TFL, and Clearwater River areas.

Bears come into regular contact with people in B.C., especially black bears because they are more adaptable to humans and human settlement than grizzlies. Black bears live throughout the forests of B.C. and often reside at the forest edge near towns or farms. These

bears frequently wander into populated areas drawn by human food and/or garbage.

If people allow these visiting bears to access garbage and other non-natural food sources, they help to create â&#x20AC;&#x153;problemâ&#x20AC;? bears. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Problemâ&#x20AC;? bears are bears â&#x20AC;&#x153;that act on their learned behavior to such an extent that they produce a threat to human safety and property when seeking out human food and/or garbageâ&#x20AC;?

A fed bear is a dead bear.

Most people are not aware of their role in the destruction of bears.

If humans allow bears to access non-natural

food sources such as garbage, they help to create â&#x20AC;&#x153;problemâ&#x20AC;? bears.

In most cases, â&#x20AC;&#x153;problemâ&#x20AC;? bears must be destroyed because they damage property and are a potential threat to human safety.

Any conflicts or concerns should be directed to 1-877-952-RARR (7277) From 2004 - 2009 Conservation Officers in British Columbia had to kill, on average, 538 black bears and 37 grizzlies each year because of real or perceived threats to human safety.

Most of these bears come into conflict with people because they are allowed to access nonnatural food sources.

Forest Products Manufacturers Establish Safety Task Force British Columbia’s wood products manufacturers have come together in an unprecedented collaboration to advance research and best practices in improving mill safety in response to the devastating explosions at Babine Forest Products and Lakeland Mills.

Until we receive the investigation conclusions from WorkSafe BC, we cannot say for certain what caused the events at those two facilities. However, we are told the investigation reports will take months and we feel strongly that the severity of the two incidents demands an immediate and comprehensive safety response. Four members of our sector lost their lives and we will not wait to take action.

On Wednesday, the CEO’s from the major wood products manufacturing companies in British Columbia gathered to create an action plan for improving safety. Companies including Ainsworth, Interfor, Dunkley Lumber, Western Forest Products, Tolko, Sinclar Group, Hampton Affiliates, Conifex, West Fraser Timber and Canfor resolved to establish a CEO-led task force that will quantify combustion risks related to dust from processing both green and dry wood and identify best practices for dust mitigation from other industries that have issues related to dust in manufacturing.

We also committed to developing a set of clear and auditable standards that will be utilized to independently assess the safety of mills across the industry. We will work with experts across disciplines and other stakeholders to ensure these standards are

comprehensive and can be relied upon to provide assurance that conditions in mills across British Columbia are safe for workers.

Finally, we will be reaching out to every forest products manufacturer in the province, large or small, to expand this initiative to every mill in British Columbia.

As the Task Force undertakes their work, each of our companies is taking proactive steps to mitigate all possible fuel and ignition sources in our mills. These significant steps began in January and all of our companies have implemented extensive measures to ensure safety. We welcome the support and collaboration of WorkSafe BC and appreciate government’s swift action to visit every facility in the province. The collective efforts of industry and WorkSafe BC are delivering immediate improvements in safety performance across all British Columbia facilities.

As we mourn the lives lost and those changed forever by the explosions at Babine Forest Products and Lakeland Mills, we are taking every possible step to ensure that nothing like this ever occurs at another mill in this province again. We will be reaching out to government and labour to join with us in our efforts, and appreciate the continued support of our employees and our communities.

We could not have done it

without you. ‘Thank you’ to the artists and artisans of all ages for displaying their work and doing their performances, ‘thank you’ to the great band, the food vendors for providing wonderful food, and of course to the 200 plus visitors. Without you this event, which concluded BC Arts and Culture Week, could not have been successful. Also,

Re: 20 year old Madison Scott still missing as anniversary date approaches Unbelievably, my 20 year old niece, Madison Scott, remains missing after mysteriously disappearing on Saturday, May 28, 2011, from the Hogsback Lake forestry campsite 25 kms south of Vanderhoof, one hour west of Prince George, BC. She was camping with a group of young people from Vanderhoof who were celebrating a friend’s birthday. Everyone left the party by about 4 a.m,

and Maddy was left alone at the campsite. Something happened that led to Maddy’s disappearance; foul play is suspected. Maddy remains missing despite a vigorous and in depth RCMP investigation and ongoing efforts by family and friends. We believe someone knows where she is, but they have not come forward with the truth. The purpose of this letter is to appeal to all British Columbians, Albertans and visitors to be watchful for and mindful of anything suspicious as they head out into the outdoors as spring and summer

approach. Our family needs everyone’s help. If anyone has any information that will help bring Madison home to her family, come forward now! The incorrect spelling of Mr. Morden’s name was intentional.

I was checking to see if he had suffered a concussion. Great news Wes! No concussion!

All indications are that you are suffering from TOYTLS, the “taught one year too long syndrome”!

The elementary

“The drums go bang and the cymbals clang” had nothing to do with the “rambling man.” It was the congregation of monks following the Dalai Lama. Can’t you see them, all dressed in orange?

The “man of grit by a gravel pit” will have to be left for a future letter after all the independent testing has been completed. Rumor has it

that there was a man with a funny hat pulling a rickshaw down Thompson Drive. I’m not sure if that had anything to do with you, Wes, or with the depth of the gravel pit.

Further to my correct spelling of the name of B. C.’s next premier, I’ve checked all my previous letters and not once was John Cummins’ name mentioned, let alone spelled wrong.

In closing, may I suggest a cure for your case of TOYTLS.?

An out-of-control grass fire worked its way under a porch and came close to destroying the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Muttit in Blue River. Prompt action by the Blue River Volunteer Fire Brigade plus local residents contained the fire.

Multiply those hours by say $17.50 an hour and that will tell you how much these ladies are worth in their time and effort.

Last year the Hospital Auxiliary purchased equipment for the hospital totalling $22,600. This year at our annual general

meeting the hospital auxiliary unanimously agreed to purchase equipment totalling $12,250. This includes a Holter monitor, stethoscope - cardiac, vital signs monitor and much more. And did you know that the Auxiliary has provided

all the TV’s and cable boxes for the acute care patients and cable boxes and music for the extended care?

Community policing: In line with our detachment’s strategic priorities addressing traffic safety and substance abuse, the Clearwater detachment had a total of 13 drug seizures from traffic stops; one grow op was taken down in Avola with a total of 307 marijuana plants being seized; one female subject was charged with production and will be appearing in court in May; and one criminal code impaired driving charge was laid during this period as well as two IRP warns.

Clearwater detachment members continue to be involved with the local schools and during this reporting period a number of bullying and Internet safety talks were conducted. Clearwater detachment members also participated in a floor hockey game at the elementary school on anti-bullying day in February.

A robbery prevention talk was given at one of the local businesses in March. At my request, Clearwater detachment members will be organizing a bike rodeo for the kids to be held May 26. Cst. Bruns will be spear-heading this event.

The B.C. government is attempting to restore limits on third-party election spending that were struck down by a judge before the 2009 vote.

Attorney General Shirley Bond has introduced amendments that would put limits on spending by unions, business groups and other non-party advertisers in the 40 days before the official start of an election campaign. A previous 60-day limit was challenged by seven public sector unions, led by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, and rejected by a B.C. Supreme Court judge as an unjustified restriction on freedom of speech.

Premier Christy Clark said some spending limit on the precampaign period is justified, since the province went to scheduled elections in 2005. Current rules restrict party and non-party spending during a formal 28-day election campaign, but contain no limits on spending before that period.

The government intends to submit the proposed 40-day restriction to the B.C. Supreme

Preschool children help in annual stocking of Dutch Lake Yevonne Cline Clearwater Preschool children were invited to take part in the annual fish stocking of Dutch Lake on May 9 at the Dutch Lake Boat launch.

“The Preschool children always come to help out,” said Mark Green, manager of Clearwater Trout Hatchery.

“They really enjoy releasing the fish.”

The group released a total of 4,000 kokanee and 1,500 rainbow trout for the annual spring stocking of Dutch Lake.

Clearwater Trout Hatchery (Freshwater Fisheries Society

of BC) stocks over 300 lakes in B.C. a year covering areas north of Merritt up to the Yukon border. Fish releases are carried out at two different times a year by the society. Fish are released into lakes in the spring from April - June and then again in the fall in September.

Fuelling for ďŹ tness ensures adequate glycogen stores for lasting energy Simon Jennings, Registered Dietitian Now that the weather is getting warmer I bet many of you are pulling out your bikes, hiking shoes, running shoes, etc. This 'not too cold, not too hot' weather is perfect for outdoor activity. Whether you are devoted to the gym or like to workout in the great outdoors I have a few nutrition tips that will help you maximize your energy.

1. Carbohydrates are your friend. Low carb diets have become very popular but will not give you adequate energy for exercise.

Just to be clear, by 'exercise' I mean activity more strenuous than a leisurely walk (think biking, hiking, running, a fitness class, etc). And by 'low carb' I mean significant restriction of grain based foods.

Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen.

Glycogen fuels our muscles during activity.

By eating whole grain carbohydrates with each meal and snacking on fruit you'll help ensure that you have adequate glycogen stores for long lasting energy.

2. Choose the right type of carbohydrates.

Of course you should limit 'bad carbs' like pop, chips, and sugary foods. Instead fuel your body with 'good carbs' such as whole grain bread, quinoa, oatmeal, fruit and vegetables.

These low glycemic carbohydrates will provide more sustainable energy and appetite satiety. Where as high glycemic foods, like white bread, white rice or sugary foods can create energy highs and lows, and leave you feeling hungry half way through your activity.

3. Pay attention to the timing of your meals. Try to eat a meal with carbohydrates and a small to moderate amount of protein 2-4 hours before exercising. Adjust the size of your meal depending on how much time you have. The closer you get to 'go time' the more important it is to have smaller amounts of food that are easy to digest.

Choose foods that are

lower in fat and fibre as they slow digestion. For early morning workouts or times when you're eating 30-60 minutes before exercising have a small snack that is primarily carbohydrate

such as a banana and a glass of milk, whole grain crackers with a little peanut butter, or a smoothie with fruit and milk.

4. Hydrate! Carry a water bottle and drink

from it throughout the day. Consume 1/2-1 litre of water in the 4 hours before your workout. It is also important to hydrate during and after exercise.

ple meal ideas for 2-4 hours before exercise: Oatmeal with berries and milk or yogurt; wholegrain toast with peanut or almond butter and banana; egg(s) and wholegrain toast; break-

fast wrap: scrambled eggs, green onion, red pepper and salsa; Greek inspired salad made with chicken, feta and quinoa; smoothie made with banana, frozen berries and plain

Greek yogurt; cottage cheese with fruit and a whole grain muffin; whole grain wrap with veggies, lean meat and cream cheese; 2-3 oz of lean meat or fish with brown rice and veggies.

The Strong Start program held a Mothers’ Day tea at Vavenby Primary School on May 9 to honour moms for all their hard work and love for their children.

Everyone had muffins, fresh fruit, yogurt, tea or water.

When the group first arrived the children made cards. Last week they made plaques of their hand prints.

The hand print plaques went very well with the poem in the cards.

After tea everyone went to the school library where Linda Brown, leader of the Mother Goose program, took over. Brown read a story and then everyone had fun singing action songs. The children were fully involved.

The first concert at the Serenity Performing Arts Centre is on Saturday, May 26, at 7 p.m.

Cancer Society applauds BC government to ban tanning beds for youth under 18 Vancouver - The Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, applauds the announcement made recently by the Honourable Health Minister, Michael de Jong, to restrict access to tanning beds for young people under the age of 18. The regulation is anticipated to take effect this fall.

"This is another step forward in cancer prevention," said Canadian Cancer Society, BC and Yukon, CEO Barbara Kaminsky. "The decision to introduce this healthy public policy has the support of the majority of British Columbians, and will help protect young people from getting skin cancer later in life."

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Canada and over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and indoor tanning equipment is the major cause of skin cancer. The good news is that skin cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers.

Youth are particularly vulnerable: the use of indoor tanning equipment before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 75 per cent. Melanoma skin

cancer - the most serious form of skin cancer - is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in youth between the ages of 15 and 29. Canadian Cancer Society has been calling on the B.C. government to implement province-wide legislation banning those under the age of 18 from using artificial tanning equipment because: • indoor tanning is especially harmful to young people • public education alone is not working • voluntary guidelines are not working • parental consent does not work Canadian Cancer Society health promotion coordinators worked with local youth volunteers in 18 high schools in 2011 to develop and implement the Tanning is Out campaign. Over 3,000 grade 12 students pledged to be tan-free for prom or graduation in 2011 and the Canadian Cancer Society is confident the number of students who pledge to be tan-free in 2012 will be much higher.

Wells Gray Tours celebrates 40 years Wells Gray Tours, a British Columbia based tour operator with five offices throughout the province, is celebrating its 40th anniversary on a seven-day Alaska cruise departing May 19.

With over 500 clients on board and most of the company’s staff, the cruise will be a great celebration.

The company began in May 1972 when founder Roland Neave, a resident of Kamloops and student at Simon Fraser University at the time, learned of a BC Hydro plan to dam the Clearwater River in nearby Wells

Gray Provincial Park. An environmental group called STRRADA protested the project by operating bus tours to the park, and Neave volunteered as a guide. BC Hydro changed its plans, but Neave continued to operate tours each summer. After graduation, he began to expand the destinations, and from these humble beginnings grew the company still known today as Wells Gray Tours.

Over the past 40 years, the company has expanded to become one of British Columbia’s largest tour operators with offices in five BC cities. The head office is still

in Kamloops, and there are sales offices in Kelowna, Penticton, and Vernon. Most recently, in April of 2010, a new branch office was opened in Victoria.

Tours are all guided group vacations and depart year round, but destinations are no longer limited to nearby provinces and states and are not restricted to motorcoach travel. On Wells Gray Tours website, you find a great diversity of vacations - cruises, theatre tours, winter getaways to the south, soft adventure, and international vacations to all continents around the globe.

Standing firm on a slippery slope with a little grounding found in faith walk One icy winter, I had the marvelous experience of sliding backward off the Boulder Hill on Windpass Road. Trust me, it was not fun!

For the uninitiated, that short stretch of back road is one of the steepest, if not the steepest, roads in the North Thompson Valley. Through some sort of miraculous intervention I did not roll or crash the van. In fact, I didn’t even get stuck. One thing I do know is that I couldn’t get all the way up the hill or keep the van stopped while I tried to figure out what to do next. It was too slick, and we were going down.

Life has slippery slopes. Perhaps the hardest thing to do these days is know how to deal with all the moral and ethical dilemmas facing us as a society. Things were a bit simpler in my growing up years.

Unfortunately, our society does little to give those doing the slipping anything to grasp.

The weather was not remarkable in any way - not wet, but with little sun and less blue sky. Appointments called us into the city of Kamloops, a familiar )` 2H` 2UV_ highway drive of about an hour and a half.

John was at the wheel so I could gawk to my heart’s content.

On a farm in Blackpool, the tractor had “spat out” hay for the cattle since new growth had scarcely begun. This precious food was heaped in a long, curving line.

“What’s special about that?” you ask. Well, it must have been warm and comfy, for that’s where the calves, all of similar colouring, were lying.

We chuckled to see two or three dozen contented cows-to-be resting on top of that row while equally happy mothers munched away at their bed. The scene was repeated further south. This time the feeding line was shorter even though the size of the herd was comparable, putting multi-coloured calves closer together.

A couple of deer blended in with deciduous tree trunks where they were browsing, slight movement of one drawing my eyes to them. To our surprise, we saw no more despite the many farmers’ fields which became greener as we drove south. In some of them, calves pretended to be real cows as they tugged at the hay being distributed by friendly tractors. I couldn’t help noticing the “joy of being alive” that emanated from these youngsters. “It’s a wonderful thing to be so young and free of the cares of the world,” I mused, thinking of human babies, kittens, puppies and more whose lives are full of caring, warmth, and food.

After that, bird life seemed to take over the scene. The usual ravens and magpies, now joined by crows that had returned from wherever they’d been enjoying a warmer winter, were sprinkled around the sky, the roadside, and everywhere in between. While looking at some geese in one damp field, I spotted two much larger, lighter-coloured, long-legged birds - sand hill cranes. All were nibbling on last year’s leavings and this spring’s new growth. Tiny yellow spring flowers adorn some of the cut-banks right beside the highway south of McLure - so bright, so easy to miss, and there so briefly.

A bald eagle, obviously awaiting an unsuspecting fish, had been sitting atop a tree beside a bend in the river just south of Barriere; closer to Heffley Creek, a large nest made of sticks was easy to see across the river because those “nasty leaves” were not yet hiding it. A trademark white head showing within the jumble told me it was occupied. As we have all seen, birds of every size love to observe the world from power lines, and this trip was no exception. Once again, identification was often beyond me. A hawk, like the first eagle, was watching for movement that would propel those strong wings into immediate action to descend on unsuspecting prey. A kingfisher kindly gave its identity away, with its typical “bad hair day,” as it too watched for a possible feast below.

John might be mumbling and grumbling about thoughtless, foolish drivers on this busy highway, but for me the miles and minutes flew past, along with the now familiar scenes along the way. The critters which also call this area home add so much interest and variety, along with the occasional surprise sightings that turn an “ordinary drive” into something special.
