An online petition to bring WestJet Airlines to the West Kootenay Regional Airport is picking up steam. The petition, started by Dirk Jonker of Nelson, has 457 signatures out of 2,500.

There were plenty of comments on the petition site, most of which were from people wanting more consistent service at the Castlegar airport. Leica Nelson-

wrote that she would, “Gladly welcome a more cost effective flying solution for us here in the West Kootenay! Yes, yes, yes!”

Castlegar councillor Kevin Chernoff said the petition has been around for a while.

“I think if you go back to the Facebook page, it was started a few years ago,” he said. “From what I see, they’re trying to get WestJet in here.

I’m seen other communities do the same thing. It’s a way for

people to let WestJet know they want their services.”

Optimism has grown in recent months about WestJet expanding into more markets after the company announced they plan to purchase several smaller aircraft and made a commitment to grow their domestic market.

West Kootenay Airport regional manager Gerry Rempel said he isn’t aware of any expansion by WestJet into Castlegar, but has heard the

carrier is expanding.

“I think they’re still deciding on where to locate their services,” he said.

At present, the West Kootenay Regional Airport is served only

by Air Canada Jazz, which goes to Vancouver and Calgary.

WestJet is not expected to announce its expansion until late 2012 or early 2013.

“We haven’t made a decision nor are we close to a decision to where we’re going to fly with this new regional airline,”

said Robert Palmer, a WestJet spokesperson. “We are not even close to a decision on where we are going to fly to. We’re still six or eight months away from making a decision on which communities we’re going to be flying into with our new service.”

Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff says the city is always looking to attract new businesses and services to the region.

“They’ve made some moves to purchase an aircraft to service communities like ours if that’s feasible. We’ve been pushing to get WestJet. We may be dealing with Air Canada again or whatever the case is because they’ve been providing the area with service. Can we upgrade services here? So really the point of discussion is - we want to talk with both carriers and get the best service possible into the community.”

Highway 3 between Salmo and Castlegar near the Bombi Summit has been reduced to single lane traffic after an unexpected build-up of ground water washed part of the road away on April 25.

Crews from Emcon are busy repairing the road. Reconstruction efforts are expected to take about three weeks.

"One of our supervisors on patrol called it in, as did several members of the public," said Joe Mottishaw, division manager for Emcon Services for the Koo-

tenay Boundary.

"We were up there within about 15 minutes of the slide happening and we quickly secured the area."

Mottishaw said the slide was caused by excess water coming down from a logging operation aided by the heavy rain fall.

Castlegar City Council briefs CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

Miss Castlegar candidates Miss Castlegar candidates attended the Castlegar city council meeting on May 7. All 12 young ladies introduced themselves to mayor and council and received a City of Castlegar heritage from Mayor Lawrence Chernoff.

The ladies are vying for the title of Miss Castlegar, which will be decided at the ceremony during Castlegar’s SunFest weekend in June.

First Street Road rehab Council gave notice that the rehabilitation of First Street project has been awarded to local firm WSA Ventures Ltd. for the sum of $228,774 plus HST. The project includes the installation of approximately 200 metres of water main and associated infrastructure.

“It’s a local contractor and we’re anticipating a start date really quick here,” said councillor Deb McIntosh.

“I think the residents of First Street and that area are going to be really pleased with what’s going to come in.

There’s going to be a sidewalk; there’s going to be some stairs.

The access is going to be better. There’s going to be better sight

lines. I think they’ll be pleased with the action council has taken with this.”

McIntosh says the city had several local bidders.

“I think it’s always important to hire local,” she said. “It was nice that we had several local companies bidding that were able to do the job.”

Concerns about intersection sightlines and overall safety had been brought forward by the First Street residents for several years.

“It’s quite a sharp little incline,” said McIntosh. “People were concerned mainly about safety. They came as a delegation.

Chris Barlow (Castlegar civic works director) worked with them closely to come up with some solutions.

I think we’ve come up with some great solutions that will help everyone out there.”

Councillor suggests forum on urban chickens Councillor Deb McIntosh brought forward the idea of council having a public meeting on the issue of backyard chickens in Castlegar.

City administrator John Malcolm told her the chickens are not allowed in city limits under the Animal Control Bylaw.

“The door was opened again for the chicken debate a few months ago,” said McIntosh after the

“We had a delegation come (Peter Wulowka) and speak to it. We owe it to the community to have that discussion. We opened that door wide open and now we have to follow through on it.”

Resident against mayor’s trip to Japan Local resident Dave Kravski has written a letter to Castlegar city council speaking against the upcoming city delegation trip to Embetsu, Japan.

At a previous meeting, council voted 4-2 to send a delegation from Castlegar to the city’s Japanese twin, Embetsu. The delegation will consist of mayor Lawrence Chernoff, fire chief Gerry Rempel, and councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff.

“I recently read the decision for a taxpayer expensed trip to Japan. I have a hard time concluding the business sense to this cost other than a nice entitlement/perk for a select few. However, if still justified by you, I would suspect that some sort of report with added value will be presented to council/community such that our community is better as a result,” wrote Kravski.

Mayor Chernoff countered by saying the trip to Japan will be a benefit to the whole region.

Mexican man’s Canadian journey ends in Castlegar CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

Castlegar RCMP received a phone call last week from a young male asking to return to his home country of Mexico.

“April 27, a fellow calls 911 from a pay phone. He doesn’t speak any English,” said Sgt. Laurel Mathew.

“Dispatch must’ve had someone that spoke Spanish - we figured out he needed to get back to Mexico.”

After procuring the use of a translator, Castlegar RCMP was able to determine that the man was an illegal immigrant who was smuggled into Canada.

Chernoff said an adult delegation has not been sent in more than 20 years.

“All we have to pay is airfare,” he said.

“Our accommodations and everything is covered by this group. It’s great for the youth in the community to see that we take leadership and allow these exchanges to take place.

The benefits of these come right back to the community.”

The delegates have not received the itinerary yet for the Japan trip, but Mayor Chernoff says they will be attending the grand opening of the city’s new fire hall.

“We got a hold of everyone we needed to - Border Patrol Services and a translator,” said Mathew.

“We took him to the airport and he was escorted away.”

The young man was in Canada for about a month but was unable to find any employment and decided he wanted to return to Mexico and so called 911, says Mathew.

“It’s not a huge stretch for that to happen,” she said.

“The grass is greener - and then, unfortunately, they can’t make their way.

“If they come here illegally, it’s not like you can just walk in and get a job or a passport.”

S.D. 20 budget passes quietly TIMOTHY SCHAFER Trail Daily Times

With little fanfare the new school district budget officially passed late last week into legislation.

The $41.9-million budget bylaw was adopted with no discussion — nor with anyone in attendance from the public — by the School District No. 20 (Kootenay Columbia) board of trustees at Trail Middle School in a brief meeting Friday evening.

It was a balanced budget, as mandated by the province, but it came at the expense of district staff, with expectation nearly 14 people from the district’s teaching and support staff will be cut.

However, that terminal prophecy could alter when the school year begins this September, said board

chair Darrel Ganzert on Sunday. What passed into law Friday night might not necessarily transpire when the chalk hits the board in the fall.

Instead, what was delivered in the budget was acknowledgement the school district will work within the reduced means the Ministry of Education has allotted it, but it is not what will automatically happen, said Ganzert.

“The actual amount of money that you gain or lose by the decisions you’ve made is quite variable in a budget,” he said.

“Only the future will tell how this works.

All this budget does is signal to the public our intentions, if truth be told.”

Meaning there will be some adjustment, some finetuning. A budget is the direction the district’s secretary

treasurer will pursue until the board decrees the course must be changed. That adjustment takes place on a monthly basis during the school year as issues — such as the teachers’ sick day cost overrun — arise.

Ganzert also dismissed the idea of putting the onus back on the provincial government to find answers to the $1.55-million budget shortfall, similar to what Cowichan’s School District No. 79 did in passing an unbalanced budget, $3.8 million more than its revenues, recently.

An unbalanced budget was not considered in SD20 since many trustees felt the facilities question — closing schools in Castlegar and Rossland — could provide a budgetary answer in the next two years, Ganzert said.

“Until that is done,

it would be irresponsible to approach the government for more money because the first thing they would say is, ‘Cut a school,’” he said. “Now, do you want them to do that or for us to do it with public input? For us, we aren’t there yet.”

The new budget means there could be 14 full time job losses throughout the region — including two teacher-librarians, almost eight teachers, three non-enrolling teacher staff, and one custodian.

The job cuts were deemed necessary for the coming year to deal with a $1.55 million operating shortfall in the district — and rising internal costs for sick leave that are now $400,000 over budget — covering a three per cent drop in funding from the Ministry of Education.

Habitat for Humanity West Kootenay held its annual general meeting on May 2 at St. Rita’s Church in Castlegar.

Attendees heard reports from various committees as well as the chair’s report.

“We have had a great year and I am very proud of what we have accomplished in the last 12 months,” said board chair Chuck Henderson. “We are 80 per cent complete on a new home being built on a lot donated by the city of Castlegar.

To build this home we have organized a number of fundraisers and have received approximately $80,000 of which we have only used half of, so the balance can be held over for a future project.”

of the experienced Nelson directors so they were learning as they went. Even with the challenges faced, they managed to raise enough money and find sponsors and volunteers to build a house in a very short period of time.

Turmoil over planned Japanese trip

From regional to provincial, national to municipal, one thing shared by all who enter into the world of politics is the chance they’ll succumb to temptations that come their way.

Sounds a lot like real life, eh?

The deal with the politicians, though, is that there is always someone with an accusation ready to let fly, and so there should be. It’s not all their own money the politicians are spending, after all.

The brouhaha over whether a Castlegar contingent should be heading over to Japan to keep up the niceties of a sister-city arrangement is a good case in point.

It’s true enough that life would go on if such relationships were just cancelled.

We’ve enjoyed the benefits of phones for years. With email... and Skype, what’s the point of actually going anywhere? Unless it’s physiotherapy or a trip to the hairsylist, we can pretty much give it a miss.

On the other hand, there is a determined lobby that feels goodwill relationships are worth promoting and preserving, and that face-to-face dealings still have value. In a way, it’s nice to know a visit from a few Castlegarians is desired on the other side of the world.

Either way, as usual, opinions are strong and varied. It’s a relief to realize, at the end of the day, that we all have bigger proverbial fish to fry.

But can we afford the Japanese junket

Tucking in to The Hunger Games We’ve been hearing a lot recently about the “hunger games” phenomenon. Young people, in particular, seem to be quite enthusiastic about the “hunger games” novels and the movie. So I had to have a look.

Reading Suzanne Collins’ novel “The Hunger Games” was an interesting experience. The novel was touted as a book for teenagers, and I can understand why they would be interested. Here were young people in a struggle to survive in a future world where the power lies elsewhere.

What I didn’t understand was why “I” was so keen upon the book. In fact, once I began to read the novel, I couldn’t put it down. It reads smoothly, the conflicts are incredibly real, and the characters are fascinating. The main character, 16-year old Katniss Everdeen, caught my attention from the first moment she was introduced.

Indeed, my sympathies focused on her throughout the entire story.

Katniss’ world is made up of several different districts in a nation called Panem sometime in the future. At the heart of this nation is a major Capitol city which rules over and controls all the outlying districts. Each district contributes a particular product to the Panem economy. district is the nation’s coal producer, and like all the other outlying districts, it has very few food resources and its residents often starve to death.

Once, however, in the past the various districts rebelled and fought the Capitol’s forces. When the districts lost the war, they were given harsh treatment. Each year they were required to choose one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games at the Capitol.

The Hunger Games are reminiscent of gladiator entertainment in ancient Rome. Only now the combatants are children from the 12 districts and from the Capitol, and the warfare is televised live to the nation. It’s a bizarre event in a landscape far bigger than a coliseum. The idea is the strongest and the smartest at survival will kill the others and reign as king or queen of the Games.

If you ever read Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery,” you’ll recognize the society Katniss lives in.

The names of all the young people in the District are placed in a glass ball on stage. Unfortunately, some names are in the glass ball more than once.

ing your name again and again to the “reaping” as it is called.

I won’t tell you how Katniss ends up as a combatant in the Hunger Games, but from the moment she is accepted, her life changes. The preparation for the introductory spectacles prior to the Hunger Games is reminiscent of the preamble beauty pageant contestants must go through. However, the Hunger Games extravaganzas far outstrip the readiness required of prospective beauty queens before they walk onto the stage.

Most of the novel follows Katniss when she is tossed into the Hunger Games environment with 23 other contestants who must kill her and the others in order to carry on. We witness her skill, her breath-taking escapes, and her near-death many times as she comes closer to winning it all. It is exciting reading as we are caught up in both her anguish and her triumphs.

In this novel, we truly enter another world than the one we live in.

The conflicts between power structures and between humans, however, are not much different than those in our own societies. That author Collins has managed to include these parallels has made this novel worth reading— even for adults.

Chicken issue likely to stick around I’m battling for democracy regarding whether Castlegar residents should be allowed to have a pet that produces food.

I am talking about chickens. A pet by any other name, would it be the same as owning a dog or cat? Not 50 or 100, but two chickens.

Five hundred-plus eggs a year. A small enough number to easily manage and an everlasting lesson on sustainability.

If rural communities are going to use this punchline, then we better understand the true meaning of it.

Prohibition of things that benefit sustainability, compared to things that extract resources from rural communities.

If you want an urban setting in the country, build yourself a large fence around your house.

Hire an artist to paint pictures of high-rises all around it!

I have been told by many residents, including the mayor, that I provided an excellent alternative option to manage and raise food-giving pets.

I have publicly put my cards on the table as a “pro-chicken” person, taken the time to research and build a suitable home for these pets, advertised the issue, peti-

tioned, commented and appeared in front of council as a delegation.

If it wasn’t for the voice of one councillor, this issue would’ve been swept under the rug.

Democracy! Wide spread public support has been demonstrated. The nay-sayers hide behind phone calls and e-mails.

Why? Because you’re chicken!

A public meeting with council is what helps the survival of democracy. This is consistent with every issue.

If you do not acknowledge the fact that your rights and privileges are continuously being extinguished - they will be lost, and I’ll tell you why. Because you sat back in your easy chair and did nothing.

It takes one hidden “no” vote to squash a thousand open “yes” votes. Does this sound fair?

The sacrifices made in the past for what we have and enjoy today will have been in vain. If you have a problem with this, I’m right here. Let me have it, and be prepared to get it back.

I’m not backing off.

I’m just warming off.

This can be a valuable lesson on freedom. Chickens are just one topic. What’s next? No lawn mowers on Sunday? Showering is only permitted between 6 and 8 p.m.?

Think about it. For those who fight for their rights - I salute

you. Our forefathers would be proud.

Group seeks board members The West Kootenay Brain Injury Association (WKBIA) is seeking individuals to serve on our Board of Directors. Our organization is a growing non-profit that requires a strong Board to oversee its direction and operation.

The WKBIA supports adults and families living with the effects of brain injury enabling them to enjoy and participate in life in their own home and community. Our organization provides one-to-one support, peer support, family support, education, advocacy, referrals, and special events.

The effects of brain injury are as varied as the people who sustain them. The damage left from a car accident, stroke, illness or blow to the head, may produce a temporary or permanent impairment of cognitive abilities and/ or motor functions.

Memory loss, difficulty with concentration, inability to plan or problem solve, low energy level, anger, irritability, disruption of sleep patterns, depression, and inability to communicate are

among the symptoms usually reported. Often these life altering effects are not obvious to the casual observer.

However those of us working with these individuals have seen the life changing results of brain injury.

Brain injury most often happens without warning and can tremendously change an individual’s life and that of their family. Families can have difficulty communicating and connecting with loved ones.

Brain injury survivors may not be able to continue their careers, drive a vehicle, or care for themselves without support: the result can be devastating.

Families are often left to become the primary caregivers and support persons for those affected. Fortunately the WKBIA can offer support. You too can make a difference!

The WKBIA is currently seeking community- minded people with an interest in helping others and willingness to learn about and participate in building a strong viable non-profit organization. The board meets one evening per month in either Trail or Castlegar. It would only take a few hours of your time every month to make a huge difference. New Castlegar Resources Guide to services for seniors now available SUBMITTED

A helpful, up-todate, easy to read resources guide to services for seniors is now available for residents in the Castlegar area.

The guide was funded by Interior Health and produced by the West Kootenay Boundary Regional Crisis Line.

Publicly funded and private services listed in the guide range from government services, food and meal programs, health care resources,

seniors’ housing and accommodation, foot care, home service providers, transportation, information lines, assistance for various health related conditions and so on.

Several years ago, a Trail & Area Seniors Guide “Closing the Gaps in Seniors’ Care” was created by the WKB Regional Crisis Line at the request of Home & Community Care staff at the Kiro Wellness Centre in Trail.

The response from seniors was so positive, that Inte-

rior Health asked the Crisis Line to create similar directories for other communities in the West Kootenay Boundary area.

Now that the Castlegar guide is completed, others for Arrow & Slocan Lakes, Nelson, the Boundary, Slocan Valley, Kaslo & Salmo are at various stages of development. The goal is to have them all completed by the end of May. Both the Castlegar and Trail Directories are posted online for downloading

and printing at www. trailfair.ca/seniors . Printed copies will be left at various locations in Castlegar, including the Seniors’ Centre, Castlegar & District Community Services, Castlegar Hospice and the Home & Community Care Office at the Castlegar & District Health Centre.

The ladies of Castlegar enjoyed a “Night in the Orient” at the 11th Annual Diamond Dinner, which was held on Saturday, May 5 at the Castlegar Community Complex. From the moment they stepped inside, the male Rotarians waited on each of the 289 guests hand and foot. The ladies were greeted with a glass of champagne and escorted to their table, and were also served dinner and drinks.

The evening included fashion shows by JJ’s Fashions and Fashion Foundations, live auction bids, silent auction bids, a draw for an unfolding bar from The Brick, and arm’s length draws featuring a variety of prizes. The male Rotarians provided the entertainment, with the “Diamonds in the Rough” dancers performing to “Footloose” and “Party Rock Anthem.”

The dinner was catered by Kim’s Creations, and featured an Asian-inspired meal including appetizers, salad, Five Spice chicken, Vietnamese spring rolls, vegetable stacks, a medley of five different types of rice and an indulgent chocolate truffle cake for dessert.

The luckiest lady of the evening, Nikki Perrin, went home with the grand prize – a beautiful diamond from Simone Jewellers as well as a gift certificate for a setting from Jo-Ann Bursey at Century 21.

This much-anticipated event is the Castlegar Rotary Club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and the proceeds go to local and international projects including outdoor exercise equipment at Millennium Park, wheelchairs for the Red Cross and PolioPlus-worldwide eradication of Polio. The Club is grateful for the continued support of our sponsors and donations from local businesses that help make this event possible.

This year’s dinner sold out in less than a day. The Committee will let everyone know next spring when and where the indemand tickets for the next Diamond Dinner will go on sale.

Kootenay Festival looking for volunteers CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

The second Kootenay Festival may not be until July, but organizers are already on the lookout for volunteers.

Last year’s inaugural festival was a big success with hundreds of visitors enjoying music, food, vendor booths, and great entertainment.

This year’s event looks to be even better with great music from Aché Brasil and Wasabi Collective already confirmed.

“We’re gearing up for a fantastic day on July 14,” said Audrey Polovnikoff, chair of the Kootenay Festival committee. “Last year we had just fantastic volunteers come out and help us prepare for the day with set up on the Friday, set up on Saturday, during the day, and then

clean up. So we’re asking if anyone is interested in helping out this year.”

Applications for volunteering are available on the festival’s website at www.kootenayfestival.com and can also be picked up at the Castlegar Community Centre.

“We need help with setting up again,” said Polovnikoff.

“Last year, we had the Rotary Interactors group

and the USCC Vision of Peace youth group and they were both amazing and we’re hoping they’ll come back on board this year.

“We had over 70 volunteers last year.

This year we are hoping to have even more.”

Some of the jobs that need volunteers are: set up and take down; children’s painting project; ad-

missions; and parking.

“We also need people to go out and check on our vendors regularly just in case they need to step away from their booths,” said Polovnikoff. “We have new kids’ activities we’ll need help with. We also want to make sure we look after all our performers, so we have backstage help that’s needed.”

the committee is already getting emails and messages from people who want to be involved again.

“We do have applications forms this year,” she said. “We want to make sure we get people the right sized shirts and put people in the jobs they want to do.

That’s something we didn’t have last year.

We want to make sure people do fill out those application forms.”

Organizers are also looking for motorized golf carts and drivers to help escort seniors around the site.

“It’s quite a big area,” said Polovnikoff. “So we want to be able to pick up seniors and take them where they want to go. We’re hoping for more golf carts. So if anyone has any golf carts they can lend us for the day, that would be fantastic.”

What follows is some information, as contained in a news release from the B.C. Government on the topic of Emergency Preparedness Week.

British Columbia has joined jurisdictions across Canada in marking May 6 to 12 as Emergency Preparedness Week.

Emergency Preparedness Week is a national awareness campaign coordinated by Public Safety Canada, in close collaboration with the provinces, territories and municipal partners.

Since 1996, the campaign has served to educate Canadians of the value in emergency planning and preparedness for emergencies and disasters of all kinds.

British Columbia faces many hazards, most stemming from natural disasters. While the Province works closely with other levels of government to help ensure publicsafety response and emergency management, safety begins at home with individual and family preparedness.

When disaster strikes, emergency workers may not reach everyone immediately, or even for several days.

Families should be prepared to take care of themselves for a minimum of 72 hours. The impacts can be lessened by knowing what to do before, during and after an emergency and by identifying the risks, having a plan and a kit prepared.

Reviews Video game Witcher 2. Once Christmas hits and all the great games come out, the video game scene becomes a veritable wasteland.

There’s usually a few good games that come out sporadically, but the big games are usually released in the fall leading up to the big Christmas season.

One game I played recently was Witcher 2. An rpg (role playing game) with combat using swords and spells, and plenty of character tree building.

I found the game to be pretty and have great sound, but ultimately, it was slow and boring. The game took a long time to get going. Combat is needlessly complicated, and while the story isn’t bad, the cut scenes are long and take you out of the action.

Of course, any recent rpg has to be compared to the great Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and Witcher 2 fails in every aspect.

Overall grade: C TV - Game of Thrones. One of the best, if not the best, TV series out right now is Game of Thrones on HBO Canada. The show, which is based on George R.R. Martin’s series of books “Of Ice and Fire,� is set in the fantasy world of Westeros. Several different heads of noble families are vying for

the Iron Crown, symbolic of the King. This is the second season and the show just gets better and better as characters become more established and alliances are made and broken. The second season expands the cast as well as the magical aspect, which was merely hinted at in the first season.

What makes the show great, though, is the amazing interaction between different characters as they vie for power.

Overall grade: A Book - Tough Sh*t.

This is the autobiography of director and actor Kevin Smith.

Smith is best know for movies like Clerks and Chasing Amy. He is also well known for utilizing social media such as Twitter and online podcasts.

The book was a little disappointing as it really meandered, particularly in the middle. There was some interesting parts but overall I was hoping for more of the insider-y chat about the movie business and his skewed views on Star Wars and other pop culture. The most well known part of the book is the long chapter where he describes in great detail how terrible it was working with Bruce Willis on Cop Out. At least you have to give Smith credit for not pulling punches.

Overall grade: C+ Music - Classic buzz band - Guns ‘N Roses. This month we travel back to the late 80’s and early 90’s when Axl Rose made it okay for men

to wear Spandex and have dreadlocks.

Okay, thankfully, that look never spread, but there is no denying the influence of the charismatic screamo singing Rose, guitar legend Slash, and the rest of the band on the music scene. For a time they cranked out hit after hit, going between ballads and all-out rockers.

Bonus points for no key members succumbing to drugs or alcohol. Loss of points for Rose touring and recording as Guns ‘N Roses without any other original band members.

Top three songs - 1.

November Rain - A fast-paced ballad, or

slow rocker? For those of us who went to university when this hit, it was the perfect end-of-the-party cool down song.

2. Welcome to the Jungle - A perfect drive down main street with the top down and rock out song. Also well used at hockey and basketball games.

3 - Sweet Child O’ Mine - The song that broke them. Sweet Child showcased Rose’s vocal gymnastics and Slash’s legendary guitar perfectly.

Overall grade - B+ Music - new buzz song - Wallpaper, Best Song Ever - A really catchy, silly, happy, hopeful ditty.

Is it really the best song ever? No, but it’s a good early summer

ROAD CLOSURE HUGH KEENLEYSIDE DAM The road over Hugh Keenleyside Dam will continue to be closed to all trafďŹ c until Wednesday, September 19.

Safety is a top priority for BC Hydro. This road closure is to ensure the safety of employees, contractors and the public at a time when the Spillway Gates Reliability Upgrade Project work on this site will be very active. During this temporary road closure, road covers will be removed in order to access the gates and gate equipment in the dam, crews will be working on and above the roadway, construction material will be stored on the roadway, and heavy equipment will be in use. This project is necessary to ensure dam safety and that ood waters can be safely discharged downstream. Please use alternate routes during this time.

My cell phone recently alerted me to the fact that I am, in fact, eligible for an upgrade, which, of course, means that after almost three years I can get a new phone.

It’s a tough decision and one I certainly don’t take lightly. A phone is something that a techno-geek like myself carries around and uses constantly. I use my cell phone to text friends, check Facebook, Twitter, and emails. I check sports scores and surf the internet. I play games such as Angry Birds and Draw Something.

I use the calendar and the alarm to remember appointments and get up in the morning. I use the built-in maps to find my way around foreign cities such as when I travel to Trail or Rossland.

My iPhone takes pretty good photos and I can also check the weather and local movie times. I have over 1,000 mp3 songs on my phone that I listen to. Heck, occasionally I’ve even made phone calls.

I’ve had an iPhone for almost three years and have, for the most part, enjoyed it.

Of course, Android based phones have improved over the past couple of years.

I’ve heard that they have more customization with the more open nature of the Android operating system.

Once the decision on which phone to buy is made it’s off to the store. Or should I wait until the next version comes out? Word is the new Android phones are coming out this summer and the new iPhone maybe the iPhone 5, finally - is coming out in the fall.

Oh, I bet they’ll have some great new features. Are they worth waiting? Who knows? But you can pretty much bet as soon as you get your

Mary Anne Coules, Stakeholder Engagement Advisor, Community Relations, has updated the Castlegar News on the work which continues at the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam near Castlegar.

“Last month, lowlevel outlet gate five was removed from the dam for refurbishment,” Coules pointed out.

“This process will

take approximately three months and entails removing, inspecting and either replacing or refurbishing all of the parts; removing the existing seals; inspecting all existing welds; recoating the gate; installing the new seals; and inspecting and repairing the gate guides and other supporting equipment. Once this work is complete, the gate will be reinstalled and tested before it is

returned to operation.

On the topic of workrelated spinoffs, the community relations specialist declared, “This project brings significant benefits to the local community.

An estimated $115,000 per month is spent locally in support of the work on this project, including the purchase of local project supplies and services whenever possible.”

Coules continued, “This includes ma-

chining works and the fabrication of tools, office supplies, accommodations, equipment rentals, safety and environmental protection equipment and services. Coules furnished an update for motorists interested in the resumption of access over the dam itself, informing that the road will remain closed until September 19, and further closures are expected beyond that date.

Mother and daughter duo ready for summer games return trip

When the Kootenay regional girls team takes the court in Surrey at the B.C. Summer Games in July, Castlegar’s Michelle Matson and her teammates will be ready for battle.

Having played on the Kootenay team at the 2010 summer games, Michelle has a pretty good idea of what to expect and

is eager to lead her team against the best players in the province.

“I remember everyone was a lot better than us,” said Michelle. “There were no East Kootenay girls on the team.

Pretty much everyone who tried out made the team.”

That is not the case this year. The Kootenay regional team, which is coached by Kim Matson, Mi-

chelle’s mother, has had two try-outs with almost 30 players taking part.

“There’s a lot more range of talent this year,” said Michelle. “We’ve had a lot more players try out from all over the Kootenays.”

The team had its first try-out camp at Stanley Humphries Secondary in Castlegar on April 21. After that camp, the team was pared down to

14 players who made their way to Cranbrook for the final try-out camp on May 5 at Parkland Middle School. After that camp, the team is now down to 12 players, although the two alternates have not been selected.

“I started off almost by complete accident,” said Kim, who also coached Michelle on the Stanley Humphries junior team this past year.

“In 2010 Michelle tried out for the summer games team as a grade six and ended up making it. I basically helped out with practices and was asked to be an assistant coach.”

Kim enjoyed her time helping with the summer games team in 2010.

“That gave me a bit of an eye-opener of what the games were all about,” she said. “It was a great experience. I knew Michelle had another shot at it two years later and seeing as how I had already coached, I thought I’d be a good person to step up and coach that team. So here we

are two years later and it’s happening.”

The 2012 Kootenay summer games team will rely heavily on Michelle’s size (6’2) and agility and touch near the basket. As a grade 8, she played junior and was one of the top players on the SHSS junior team. Her passion for the game is evident when you watch Michelle run through drills in practice. Despite her strong skill level, she is always working hard and pushing her self and her teammates.

“I really like basketball,” said Michelle. “Going to the summer games in 2010 was really fun.”

Adding strength to the Kootenay team is a trio of talented East Kootenay players: Claire Duffy, Hunter Burton, and Cameo Hanlon. Duffy and Burton are both from Cranbrook and play on a very strong club team and add size and defence.

Hanlon is from Sparwood and can play both guard and forward. Her dedication is evident, as she has to travel almost five

hours to attend the camps in Castlegar.

Adding quickness and talent to the backcourt will be a pair of West Kootenay guards: Ansleigh Dergousoff from Nelson and Kari Durban from Greenwood.

Dergousoff is an athletic multi-position player, while Durban is expected to be one of the team’s top defenders.

“I’ve been very impressed with the talent that’s come out,” said Kim. “It’s been great to have players from throughout the East and West Kootenays. We’ve got players from Greenwood to Sparwood.”

Coach Kim is happy with the level of improvement she’s seen in a short time.

“I’m pleased with how the team’s progressing,” she said.

“We’ve had two major weekends of eight hours of basketball.

We’ve tried to cover a number of things in that time. It’s a lot of stuff to cover, but I think it’s coming together.”

The Kootenay team will be heading down to the B.C.

The Stanley Humphries Secondary (SHSS) senior girls soccer team was in action this past weekend at a tournament in Nakusp, despite a recent BCTF vote where teachers voted in favour of withdrawing volunteer services.

“Many of the regular teachers/coaches were in attendance,” said coach Brainwen Hains-

worth, who is continuing to coach despite the BCTF vote.

“It is difficult to get other people involved so without the teachers’ participation, the girls simply will not have school soccer. The program has been running for 14 years and I am not willing to lose it after all that time and effort has been put in.”

Hainsworth says education cutbacks have made her job difficult as soccer coach.

“Bussing is outrageosly expensive and, unless, I charge the parents for bussing, I don’t know how we’ll continue to get the players to tournaments,” she said.

Taking a team to Nelson is about $500, while going to Nakusp was close to $2,000.

“That doesn’t include the tournament fee, my teacher-on-call cost or hotel costs. The whole situation becomes unaffordabel.

So, while I want the program to contineu, unless the government puts more money into the whole system, or parents pay a lot more, I simply can’t keep trying to find people to drive their kids to play during the work week.”

With school tournament on Fridays and Saturdays, it’s hard to find parent drivers for Fridays.

“It’s very frustrating so this could be my last leason,” said Hains-

worth. “That breaks my heart and I’m not fully decided but I’m moving closer to that verdict. The system no longer supports these opportunities for kids or for teacdher and therefore, we are losing the vibrancy we used to enjoy in our school experience.”

On the field, the SHSS team won two of three games.

Zone Provincial Tournament in Langley on May 25-27.

At that tournament, the team will have a chance to play games against other summer games teams as well as be evaluated by provincial team coaches.

“We’ve basically had two weekends to prepare them for zone provincials,” said Kim. “We’ll see what comes out of that, but I think we’re ready to compete.”

The B.C. Summer Games take place July 19-22 in Surrey.

In total, there will be more than 2,800 athletes from all over the province competing in 20 different sports.

“The girls get an opportunity to play against the best in the province and participate in the summer games experience,” said Kim. “It’s something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. It’s a great opportunity for them to develop their game practicing against the best players in the area and playing against the best girls in the province.”

Both the U12 and U16 West Kootenay Bulls boys club basketball teams had good results at the Thompson Rivers University spring basketball tournament on May 4 and 5 in Kamloops. The U12 team placed second out of four teams in a round robin format. They lost a heartbreaker in the opening game to eventual champion Vernon 19-18. The Bulls went back and forth all game with the quick team from Vernon, but a last second short fell short.

Next up for the U12’s was the Valleyview club from Kamloops.

Bulls led after the first half and exchanged the lead during the second half. Eventually, OK Mission took the win 44-37 behind some strong outside shooting. The Bulls played their second game on 75 minutes rest against another Valleyview club team. The Kamloops squad brought only eight players into this match up. The Bulls played all 12 players and proceeded to push the pace for the entire game. Strong defence produced turnovers and fast break points, leading to a final score of 36-22 in favour of the Bulls. Vanderhoof was the opponent for the last pool game.

The Bulls started slowly and the score was close throughout the game. Strong in-

side play and solid rebounding carried the Bulls. However, strong outside shooting kept the Vanderhoof squad within striking distance until the end.

Eventually, the balanced Bulls squad was too much and they prevailed 49-44. This left the Bulls in second place in their pool and earned a spot in the consolation final. The South Okanagan Regional team awaited in the final match-up.

South Okanagan led for most of the game, but the Bulls kept the score within seven points for most of the match. Every time they closed the gap to four or less, the Okanagan team had an answer and extended the lead again. Final score was 46-34 for S. Okanagan. The Bulls

represented themselves with pride and grit throughout the tournament. Officials let the boys play rough throughout the tournament and the Bulls backed down from no one. Every player on the roster rebounded fearlessly and competed for every loose ball. Defensive effort was intense, leaving opponents frustrated and exhausted.

Twenty-three players represented the West Kootenay in both age groups. Players were from Trail, Nelson, Castlegar, Salmo, and Slocan Valley.

Every player contributed throughout the tournament. All the players and coaches learned a lot and look forward to a bigger and better program in 2013.

Janzen from Creston was second with a 90. One of the best performances on the day came from the 13 and 14 year olds where Nolan Renwick from Granite Point Carded a 79 to finish second overall, but first in his flight. Braden McKay from RTCC was second in 13 and 14 year flight with an 84.

In the skill prizes Garrett Underwood won KP for the 15 18 year olds and Ryan Fullerton from RTCC won long drive. Jeff Ashton from Castlegar won KP in 14 and under and Braden McKay took the long drive.

For the first time in a few years we had enough females to run a female division. Amber Arnold from Castlegar beat MacKenzie Field in a two hole playoff to take first. Both girls posted identical rounds of 88.

In the skill prizes MacKenzie Field won KP for the 15 - 18 year olds and Derik Launier from Rock Creek won it for the 14 and unders. Nolan Renwick was the long drive winner in the 14 and under and Jordan Hoodikoff was the LD champion in the 15 - 18 year division.

The next scheduled event for Juniors is on Saturday in Nakusp.

The Selkirk College Saints Men’s Hockey program is pleased to announce a commitment from forward Kyle Golz (Surrey, B.C.) to attend Selkirk College and compete for the Saints beginning in the 2012/13 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

Golz joins the Saints from the Pacific International Junior Hockey League’s Grandview Steelers, where he finished the 2011/12 season as the team’s top goal scorer.

He scored 17 goals and totalled 28 points on the season despite missing 12 games to injury, and added 94 penalty minutes. In two PIJHL seasons split between the Steelers and Aldergrove Kodiaks, Golz

scored 32 goals and picked up 21 assists in 66 games.

The 6-foot-2 centre has also spent time in the WHL and BCHL, having split

the 2008/09 season between the Prince Albert Raiders and the Quesnel Millionaires.

Saints sign former Comox Valley captain SUBMITTED

The Selkirk College Saints Men’s Hockey program also announced a commitment from forward Jackson Garrett (Comox, B.C.) to attend Selkirk College and compete for the Saints beginning in the 2012/13 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

Garrett joins the Saints following four seasons in the BCHL and VIJHL, where he concluded his junior career with his hometown Comox Valley Glacier Kings. The six-foot-three winger captained the Glacier Kings during the 2011/12 season and led the team with 28 goals and 60 points in 39 games played.

Those totals were good for second and fourth respectively amongst all VIJHL skaters, while his 165 penalty minutes were the second most in the league.

The 20-year old previously spent three seasons in the British Columbia Hockey

League, totalling 35 goals and 73 points in 106 games split between the Alberni Valley Bulldogs, Cowichan Valley Capitals and Powell River Kings. During the 2009/10 season he was the Capitals’ second leading scorer with 22 goals and 51 points in 50 games played.

“Jackson brings good size and a great deal of ability and experience to our lineup,” says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois.

“He’s a prototypical power forward who plays his best when he’s disruptive in the offensive zone and using his size to create scoring opportu-

Allan Munroe MUNROE- Allan was born on September 7, 1953 in Trail, BC and passed away on April 28, 2012 in Salmo, BC. Allan is predeceased by his father, James Munroe and is survived by his mother, Pat Munroe of Nelson; two sisters Lynda (Larry) Dunkley of Clearwater; Margaret (John) MacDonald of Salmo; nieces Leigh-Anne (Jody) Fleury and family of Okotoks, AB; Tara MacDonald of Calgary AB and Chelsey MacDonald of Kelowna; nephews Troy (Suzi) Haskell and family from Salmon Arm; and Kevin MacDonald of Salmo. Allan did tree planting in the 80’s and 90’s, worked in the Coal Mine at Elkford and the Copper Mine in Gransile in the mid 70’s and gas line installation in the mid 90’s.

Allan loved participating in most sports- especially hockey, fastball and golf. He enjoyed camping and fly-fishing with friends at various lakes around the Kootenays and Okanagan. Allan also enjoyed huckleberry picking, going for long walks with his dog Bob, and having coffee at both the Totem Inn in Peachland and the Dragonfly in Salmo.

A celebration of Allan’s life will take place at the Dragonfly Café- 413 Railway Road in Salmo, BC at 4:00pm on Saturday, May 5th, 2012. Bill Clark of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services in Trail, BC was entrusted with the arrangements. As an expression of sympathy, any donations to either the SPCA or to www.kidsportcanada.com (specify which community) would be greatly appreciated.

MIKE PLOTNIKOFF July 21, 1929 - April 27, 2012 Mike Plotnikoff passed away suddenly at his home, on Friday, April 27, 2012. He was 82 years old.

Mike was born on July 21, 1929 in Castlegar, BC. It was here in Castlegar where he grew up, had all his schooling, raised a family and lived his whole life.

Mike met his wife Paulie Markin in Grand Forks, BC and they were married on March 31, 1956. Mike and Paulie later welcomed two wonderful children, a son Ed and a daughter Carrie.

Mike worked at the local sawmill, Celgar, as a dry kiln operator, as well as an oiler, until retirement in the early - 90’s.

Throughout his life, Mike enjoyed various activities such as carpentry, gardening, fishing and watching his favorite hockey team, the Vancouver Canucks. He also enjoyed visiting different Casinos and playing the lottery he always thought that maybe one day he would be a big winner!

Mike really loved spending time with his grandson Kane whom he referred to as his “rock”.

Mike also spent much of his time with his companion of the last 16 years, Vera Makaroff. Mike and Vera were the best of friends and were together until his passing. Mike will be deeply missed by his own family, but he will be missed by Vera’s family as well.

In 2010, Mike welcomed his first great-grandson, Maksim Plotnikoff. This meant that Mike, Ed, Kyle and Maksim were now four generations of Plotnikoffs, which is a very special and uncommon today. Mike was proud to have been a part of this.

Mike was a kind, humble, generous, soft-spoken and gentle man. He was also very helpful, friendly, and social, and he had a quiet sense of humor.

Mike is predeceased by his loving wife of 39 years, Paulie, who passed away March 4, 1995. He is also predeceased by his father Mike Plotnikoff, his mother Nora Plotnikoff and his sisters Nora Drazdoff and Florence Kinakin.

Mike is survived by his son Ed and his wife Donna; daughter Carrie and her husband Fred; grandson Kyle and his wife Natalie; granddaughter Tianta and her husband Dean; grandson Kane; great-grandsons Maksim and Hudson; and his sister Polly Davidoff and her husband Andy.

We would like to thank Castlegar Fire and Rescue, Ambulance Attendants, RCMP, Neighbours, Bill Strilaeff & staff at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel, Harry Zeabin, singers, Walter Holuboff, gravediggers & the cooks. Also thank you to all who sent flowers, food & condolences.

MAY GOD BLESS HIM & MAY HE REST IN PEACE.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) union position, working a once monthly ten (10) days on, four (4) days off rotation, at an hourly wage of $32.30 (as of March 1, 2012) plus a certification premium of $0.20 per hour for each level of each certificate obtained.
