The farmers are in the dell It all started 20 years from humble beginnings. In a field under the guidance of Gary Rolston, the district agriculturalist, a few Comox Valley farmers got together to market their product directly to the public for the first time. On a good day there were about 10 of them and maybe 100 customers that first year. Now, the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market includes more than 100 members and 60plus vendors on the field peak season – and thousands of customers each week. More than a million shoppers are estimated to have loaded their bags with the Valley’s bounty at the market in the past two decades. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his
belly – well, if the folks who frequent the farmers’ market are any indication, this is also true for women and kids (and dogs). Smiling faces abound on the field each Saturday, while shoppers scan the stalls to see what’s ripe and ready this week. The market manager claims the devotion is strong. “Every week there are folks here at 8:30 even though the market vendors are not allowed to sell before 9. These shoppers are serious, cruising the grounds for the first bunch of asparagus or the first strawberries. When the bell goes — they know where they’re going!” In fact, farmers markets are springing up all over B.C. and across Canada, and not just for the farmers. Originally, farmers’ markets were all about

It’s an infomercial listing the benefits of the latest “Perfect SitUp Machine.� Wow! Another machine that allows perfect technique for strengthening, while allowing you to lose up to (fill in your own number here) inches off of your waist in
only four short weeks! These claims are usually followed by pictures of pretty people with sculpted abdominal muscles and perfect bodies. The only problem is after using this wonderful machine for a while things don’t really look any different than when you started. Why? Most of the time if you do develop a set of washboard abs, they are still

buried under a layer of cellulite, otherwise known as body fat. Black Creek evacuation plan under development Scott Stanfield Black Press The Comox Valley Emergency Program (CVEP) will formulate a plan over the next couple of months to better deal with evacuations in Black Creek when the next storm hits. A number of residents in and around Macaulay Road were trapped during a storm in March that closed the dead end road. There are evacuation routes north of the river and at Saratoga Beach by Seaview Road to Williams Beach Road, but southerly residents need to cross a farmer’s field to access Hamm Road. According to residents, the problem would be solved if Macaulay joined with Hamm. Program staff met with the Comox Valley Regional District, B.C. Hydro, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI), Oyster River firefighters,
and Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue to review what happened during the road closure. The next step is to meet with residents once the CVEP comes up with a plan to solve some of the problems. “The biggest problem is one way in, one way out,” program co-ordinator Mike Fournier said, noting a reverse plan for forest fire evacuation enables motorists to drive through private property. “When this (storm) happened it was kind of reverse. “People wanted to go back in...But now the local people say we should have something more permanent than this. It is a long way around. “We have to take them all the way to the Blackberry Farm, and then the logging roads and all the way back up to Cranberry turnoff, which is about 7k.” The CVEP needs to work with MOTI to determine if another avenue could open.

“To put people back in is not that big of an emergency, but to take people out during a forest fire, that would definitely be an emergency that would have to be quick,” Fournier said. Linking Macaulay and Hamm is about one to two kilometres, which Fournier said is MOTI jurisdiction. Normally, people who pay for roads are doing
subdivisions. He said Lory Road would be an easier project but would serve only some of the residents, not everyone at the end of Macaulay. “We already have three exits but we should try to improve that,” Fournier said, noting the Seaview/ Williams Beach route poses the same issue with private property. “We’re working on it.”

Kevan McLean had one in storage for quite some time and recently, members of the Tyee Club picked up the boat and plans are in the works to tear it apart and rebuild it forr fishing. The Discovery Pier in Campbell Kevan with an original River is celebrating Painters Tyee Rowboat 25 years. The pier is now open for fishing and the concession stand has been completely renovated. On April 20, Mel Adams landed a 28 pound spring and 2 years ago he hooked and landed a 47 pounder. Mel puts in a lot of time fishing with his friends and family on the pier. Fishing has improved in many of the freshwater lakes close to Campbell River and Courtenay. Last Sunday, I met Blair McLean at one of the local lakes and within minutes we were catching trout on the surface. It was an overcast day with a slight breeze and some other anglers were catching fish using power bait. Many of the trout caught that day were the ones planted last year. I had the chance to stop by Painters Lodge and the dock is now in and the fishing season is underway. The Lodge will have a fleet of up to 30 boats operating this year. Painters is a first class fishing operation and the guides working this year are all experienced and they know where the salmon are biting. For the next few weeks with the water remaining as it is, steelhead fishing will be very good on the Salmon River where Big Tree Creek enters. Anglers making their way to Gooseneck report that the road is rough and you need to watch for potholes. If you’re heading toward the Middle Quinsam, the road is fair and once you get there some good trout fishing can be had on the fly. Sayward has been a popular area to catch halibut in the 18 to 20 pound size. Shelter Point and the Hump are slow for salmon; small florescent plugs are producing the odd fish.

100 years of the BC Forest Service celebrated One hundred years ago the province created the first government agency to preserve B.C.’s forests through forest fire prevention, use of timber management areas, tree planting and diversification of treegrowing. Since 1912 the BC Forest Service has managed and protected the province’’s forests and range lands. On April 24, current staff and
retirees from the Campbell River area got together at the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations office to celebrate 100 years of exemplary resource stewardship. Are you and your boat ready for the season? By John Gullick Canadian Safe Boating Council Every year thousands of boaters go out on the water
without giving any thought to how prepared either they or their boats are for the season ahead. Personal preparation involves ensuring you have
on-hand your Pleasure Craft Operator Card, up to date nautical charts, a pre-departure checklist and have obtained a reliable marine weather
forecast. When it comes to vessel preparedness, one of the first things to ensure is that your boat and engine(s) are mechanically sound.

Remember that, throughout most of Canada, boats have been in storage for a number of months over the winter and may not operate as
efficiently as they did last season. Make sure that you follow the recommended maintenance schedule found in your boat’s owner’s manual.
The Canadian government also mandates that specific safety equipment be carried on board. This equipment can be of great benefit and can mean the difference between a great day out on the water and a potential disaster. During Safe Boating Awareness Week (May 19 - 25) and throughout the entire season, the Canadian Safe Boating Council and Smartboater. ca want to remind Canadians to review their safe boating check list before heading out onto the water. Required items vary depending on boat length but the list below highlights the things that, at minimum, need be carried on board, in good working condition and within reach each time you go out: Compulsory Items required on a typical vessel 6 meters or less in length: ● The vessels license or registration if powered by a motor of 7.5 kw (10 hp) or more ● A Canadian approved flotation device (PFD) in good repair and of appropriate size for every person on board. ● Fire extinguisher (depending on type of engine, gas tank or cooking appliances on board). ● Watertight flashlight or pyrotechnic distress signal requirements (flares). ● Sound signaling device. ● Buoyant heaving line (minimum 15 meters in length). ● Paddle or anchor with at least 15 meters of rode and /or chain. ● Re-boarding device. ● Bailer or manual water pump. ● Navigation lights. ● Secure batteries. ● Passive ventilation that allows air to flow through below decks.
