To help residents dispose of unused and leftover household pesticides, Delta is hosting a free residential pesticide drop-off day on Saturday, May 5.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. that day residents can drop off domestic pesticides only in liquid, solid and aerosol form at the Engineering Operations Works Yard parking lot, 5404 64th St. Containers must not exceed 10 litres and they must be labelled with a poison symbol and a "Pest Control Product" registration number.

small fish-bearing slough may just be outside the windows of Neilson Grove Elementary school in Ladner, but a recent, student-led art project to help promote awareness of stream habitat preservation and protection has been given a global reach.

Students used a combination of traditional and high-tech methods when they created a mural of swimming salmon lining the school's fence adjacent to a section of the Millennium Trail and the slough.

Inspired by what they were learning about local waterways and how they can protect them, the students decided to provide the information they gathered on video from environmental experts to a wider audience.

Then, students from all grades painted wooden cutouts of salmon that parents tied the fence. And on some of the brightly coloured fish were QR codes that when scanned by a smart phone link to the videos some of the older students produced.

On hand for the work party of parents Monday (April 30) putting up the mural was Grade 6 student Andrea Heard who explained the students linked up with the Stream of Dreams non-profit organization

that educates students and communities about their local waterways.

"The Stream of Dreams is trying to raise awareness about the fish and how all drains lead to fish habitats," she said, adding the students learned how dumping chemicals in local creeks, and even down a kitchen sink can be harmful.

As for what people will see when they scan the QR codes on the fish, Heard said, "They link to websites that go directly to videos of interviews we made for different aspects of conservation. My group did one for the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society."

Heard said she hoped those using that section of the Millennium Trail will notice the colourful mural and take time to stop and scan the QR codes.

"If anybody is coming down here, jogging

by with their smart phone, they can scan the QR codes and get some information from our interviews, as well as some of our science experiments having to do with watersheds."

Delta school trustee Val Windsor, who was at Neilson Grove to see the mural being put in place, said she was impressed by the scope of learning the mural project has provided for the students.

"Well certainly, it's gone beyond the sit and regurgitate from what you've read in a book," said Windsor, a former longtime teacher and head of the Delta Teachers' Association. "Kids are living the education they are getting right now. They are branching out into the more global community in some of the clubs they've contacted and interviewed. This is life-long learning. They are learning from this particular project—the media aspect of it, interviewing people. This incredible learning experience will stick with them forever."

Neilson Grove principal Bob Thompson said he was delighted with the project's reach within his school.

"We're really working hard to extend and deepen our students' learning and make it more meaningful for them," he said. "This is another kind of literacy that we're working on." editor@southdeltaleader.com

Delta's Rotarians will be celebrating the achievements of local youngsters next Saturday (May 12) when they hand out the annual Rotary Youth Awards.

The event at the Delta Town & Country Inn will recognize a total of 22 youths from age 10 to 18 from the Delta community who best represent the spirit in each of its award categories including Compassion and Empathy, Inner Strength, Helping Hand and the Global category.

One of the students will also be presented with Rotary Service Above Self award, which is given to the youth that best represents Rotary club’s motto.

DSS courtyard revamped

What was once a vacant, weed-infested space at the centre of Delta Secondary School has been transformed into an outdoor social hub where students can eat lunch and enjoy the fresh air.

On Tuesday (May 1) staff and students celebrated the grand opening of the revitalized Centennial Courtyard with live music, refreshments and a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The square space, accessible from inside the school building, was for a long time closed off to the student body. But thanks to a $1,000 donation from Delta Youth Support Line (DYSL) and the efforts of the Grade 11 academic leadership class, the courtyard has been cleaned up and fitted with picnic tables, benches, flower planters, garbage cans and recycling bins.

The revitalized Centennial Courtyard also commemorates the 100th anniversary of Delta Secondary School.

As the weather warms up, Delta drivers are being reminded to exercise caution on the roads.

Delta traffic police and volunteers took to the streets Tuesday (May 1) and Wednesday (May 2) as part of a high-risk driving initiative, developed in partnership with ICBC, designed to cut down on preventable accidents.

“We see vulnerable road users out and about, which are pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycle riders,” said Delta Police spokesperson Const. Ciaran Feenan. “As we move into the spring and into the summer, it’s just a reminder to people to slow down, to think about their driving habits, and if they’re engaging in risky behaviour, to try and curtail that.”

Feenan said the overall strategy of the two-day traffic blitz is built around education, prevention, awareness and enforcement.

Volunteers from the Tsawwassen, Ladner and North Delta Community Police Station (CoPS) offices set up speed boards in and around known problem areas.

That visible warning was coupled with the Delta Police traffic enforcement team, who used radar and handed out tickets. In addition to speed, police also cracked down on other risky driving habits such as unsafe lane

“We’re looking at school zone safety, intersection safety,” said Feenan. “We know that 60 per cent of collisions that occur in British Columbia occur in intersections, and that has to do with awareness around traffic signals, traffic controlled devices, red lights, yellow lights.”

Southpointe top-ranked Delta school in Fraser Institute list Annual report card based on province-wide exam results CHRISTINE LYON REPORTER

Tsawwassen’s Southpointe Academy is the topstanding high school in Delta according to the Fraser Institute’s annual ranking of secondary schools in B.C. and Yukon.

Released Monday (April 30), the report puts Southpointe in 19th place for the 2010/2011 school year out of the total 280 public and independent schools on the list.

The rankings are based on average exam marks in grades 10, 11 and 12 courses that include a mandatory provincial exam.

Southpointe scored 8.6 out of 10 on the most recent report card. That’s down slightly from its average 14th place ranking with a score of 8.8 over the last five years.

Tsawwassen’s South Delta Secondary tied for 73rd spot with a rating of 7.0. Delta Secondary School was close behind, tied for 86th place with a rating of 6.8.

The Fraser Institute report card also includes information about each school’s make up, including parents’ average income, the percentage of ESL students, and the percentage of special needs students.

Delta school trustee Val Windsor questioned the right-wing think tank’s annual school report card.

“I think most parents and the community realize that what the Fraser Institute is doing is try to sell newspapers and their own organization,” said Windsor. “What they are doing is not necessarily good for public education.”

Windsor added she worries the motivation of the institute’s ranking is to drive students towards the private education system.

According to Delta Police, preliminary indications are that on April 4 the Prince Rupert RCMP attended a residence and were advised that the 15-year-old youth wanted to harm herself.

Police confirmed with the teen that she was upset and wanted to take her own life. The female was apprehended under the Mental Health Act. She was also then arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

And the adults would go out and gather crabs, clams and mussels. We'd get a big pot and have a cook out right at the beach. And that would bring people together," she says. "It was wonderful.

Some of my best childhood memories are from the times I spent there with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins."

Unfortunately, McElhinney's mother, Valeria Williams, died when she was eight so some of those memorable times did not continue as often.

But thanks to her close contact with TFN's elders she has been able to discover something about her own family.

"One of the things that's so wonderful with the position I have with the Elders Gathering is learning that my parents met while picking berries one summer on Vashon Island, which is near Seattle," she says, adding it "closed the loop" on a photo of her mother as a youngster picking berries.

"They used to bus the young people down there every summer and that's how they got together."

As an "elder in training" McElhinney says her role is to absorb knowledge from elders.

"It's part of them to know things like weaving, and going and getting cedar, and how they weave a traditional hat—different traditional things like how you create regalia, how you honour people, how you lay people to rest," she says, adding much of that is passed down by example.

iane McElhinney likes to refer to herself as an "elder in training."

"I don't really consider myself to be an elder yet," laughs the 58-year-old TFN member who is serving as cochair of the 36th annual Elders Gathering event July 10-12 in Abbotsford.

"But I can tell you from the perspective of what it means to me to have elders at the Tsawwassen First Nation."

McElhinney says simply put that elders are keepers of history, culture and traditions.

"They are the people who connect us back in time," she adds.

And that's an important link, one that will be shared by the 5,000 or so from across the country who are expected to attend the event at the Tradex – Trade and Exhibition Centre which is being hosted by the Tsawwassen First Nation and Stó:lo communities.

The event's purpose is for elders to come together and take their rightful place as advisors, teachers, and leaders.

And in preparing for it McElhinney says she was able to recall some wonderful memories from her childhood that was spent between TFN and Washington State.

She calls the TFN land of the late 1950s and early 1960s as an idyllic place.

"It was before the (BC Ferries) ferry dock, or causeway, was put in," she says. "We used to be able to walk over to the beach and see lots of tide pools.

Problem solvers bound for Iowa Competition encourages kids to think outside the box

Seven students from Sacred Heart School, dressed in their performance costumes, will compete at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in Iowa after a successful showing at the provincial competition.

A group of students from Ladner's Sacred Heart School is heading to Ames, Iowa in a few weeks to demonstrate their problem solving skills.

The school entered four teams in the provincial Odyssey of the Mind competition held April 21, and one of its teams, comprised of seven Grade 5 students, qualified to move ahead to the world finals May 23-26 at Iowa State University.

Two others received silver and bronze medals respectively.

Team members include Meaghan Dillon, Jeremy Walker, Christy-Anna Chung, Lauren Tjoe, Tess Karwandy, Liam Lester and Jake Hwang.

Odyssey of the Mind is a school-based, international program that promotes creative problem solving for students from kindergarten through college. Under the guidance of a coach, teams of five to seven students learn creative thinking and problem solving skills while finding innovative solutions to a variety of technical and performance problems.

"Odyssey of the Mind is not looking for a straightforward answer. So you if you ask a question, the obvious answer isn't necessarily the one that's going to get

"The nice thing about it is the kids really, unlike a lot of their education, have to do it themselves. The coaches are not allowed to give them solutions," she added.

The kids needs to raise a hefty $12,000 to get to the world finals and are planning a series of fundraising activities before school lets out for summer.

Customer care is at the heart of most successful businesses, and Ladner Autobody is no exception after 35 years in operation.

It's a trait recently reinforced when the firm earned a customer satisfaction award from ICBC for the second year in a row through a follow up survey for the 2011 AutocheX Premier Achiever Award for outstanding customer service.

According to ICBC, AutocheX is a third party company that measures customer satisfaction levels for body shops.

Garden club member says homegrown is best Bruce Kinghorn likes his tomatoes. And he's got plenty of them—about 36 varieties he will be offering up at the Evergreen Garden Club's spring sale May 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mountainview Extended Care centre at Delta Hospital.

Kinghorn says that once you've tried homegrown tomatoes it's next to near impossible to go back to store-bought.

"They are just not as tasty or juicy as the ones you can grow," he says.

Last year, he took along 260 plants to the sale and they were gone in about 30 minutes.

"I guess people must have liked them," says the 46-year Tsawwassen resident.

This year proceeds from the sale will be split between the gardening club and the extended care facility.

One recipe Kinghorn said is perfect for a nice ripe tomato is one for soup he came across at an out-of-the-way place in Yountville, California called Bistro Jeanty.

The unique part is the soup bowl is topped with flaky puff pastry that you have to dive through to get to the creamy and rich soup below.

DIRECTIONS Melt the 1/2 cup of butter in a large stockpot over a medium-low heat.

Add onion, cover and cook for about five minutes. Do not let the onions colour.

Add the tomatoes, garlic, tomato paste, bay leaf, peppercorns, thyme and water, if needed. Simmer over low heat for 30-40 minutes until the tomatoes and onions are soft.

Puree in a blender (working in batches) or use a handheld immersion blender.

Strain.

Return soup to the pot. Add cream, salt, white pepper and the remaining 1-2 tbsp of butter to taste. Bring soup back

Bistro Jeanty Tomato Soup INGREDIENTS 2 1/2 lbs (5 cups) tomatoes, ripe, cored and quartered 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/2 lb (1 cup) yellow onions, sliced 6 cloves of garlic 1/4 cup tomato paste 1 bay leaf 1/2 tbsp whole black pepper corns

Free 

1 tsp dried thyme 1 cup water (use only if tomatoes are not ripe and juicy) 4 cups heavy cream 1-2 tbsp butter 1/2 tsp ground white pepper 1 lb puff pastry—defrosted if frozen 1 egg-beaten with 1 tbsp water Salt to taste to boil.

Let soup cool for two hours or overnight in the fridge. Divide among six, eight-ounce cups or bowls.

Roll out puff pastry to 1/4 inch.

Cut six rounds slightly larger than your cups or bowls. Paint the dough with the egg wash and turn the circles egg washside down over the tops of the cups, pulling lightly on the sides to make the dough tight like a drum.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly paint the top of the dough rounds with egg wash without pushing the dough down.

Bake for 10-15 minutes until the dough is golden brown. Serve immediately.

Let me start by saying I am an animal lover, own a dog, have taken my students to the animal shelter to volunteer to walk the dogs at the shelter, so I appreciate and respect all of the fine work caregivers provide to animals less fortunate that our own family pet(s).

Freedom of choice One could argue that the right, a side of the political spectrum that is defined by smaller government and free enterpr ise, had a determining factor of splitting that led to two NDP gains in both Port Moody and Chilliwack-Hope.

So, the rationale by some of those on the right was to call for an alliance between the failing BC Liberals and the BC Conservatives which remain a relatively new and untested political party to many British Columbians.

I just find it ironic that George Harvie and Mayor Jackson are able to find $4.2 million to stand up and protect these animals, yet when they were approached many times by MAPP (Mothers Against Power Poles) and people of the South Delta community to stand up and protect us against the massive power line upgrade that affects all of our health, wellbeing and safety, they turned a

blind eye.

I am deeply disturbed and disappointed animals are being taken care of and protected to a much greater extent than the children and residents of South Delta—shame.

Are the BC Conservatives going

to make mistakes if they ever form government? They probably will, but it is the duty of voters to hold them accountable.

The idea of flipping between the BC Liberals and the NDP simply because one has betrayed you more recently than the other is a failed state of democracy, and that’s why voter turnout is so low.

In the 2009 provincial election only 50 per cent of eligible voters turned out to vote, and always offering up the same choices is only going to make that number drop.

Free enterprise struggles Is the B.C. electorate truly drifting to the left?

The results of two byelections last month might seem to indicate a rise in support for the NDP. But it’s just as likely to be a symptom of resistance to the right-of-centre options offered in the province today.

It’s no secret the public is disenchanted with the BC Liberal brand. Where once the party name alone was deemed a sufficient selling point, they have been falling over themselves to remind us that they are “a free-enterprise coalition.”

Thoughts on a name change to help party fortunes show a weakness, and one some South Deltans didn't see as an effective way of improving matters—see the results of last week's Readerpoll.

And this weekend’s departure of party executive director Chad Pederson and director of communications Jehnifer Benoit to pursue opportunities in the private sector—no matter how vociferous their parting good wishes— can only be viewed by a jaundiced public as further symptoms of the BC Liberals’ slide.

The B.C. electorate is angry—angry as much as anything else with a lack of leadership choices. Policy advisers should recognize that when the public blood boils, it’s not a time to expect calm or rational decision-making. Lecturing, or hectoring, the electorate will likely only raise the temperature in the kitchen.

It’s not just a B.C. problem. The “Occupy” movement achieved traction internationally because of the unpunished excesses of a group of economic looters.

Avarice—and corporate and governmental double-speak—has led to a climate of suspicion surrounding all free-enterprise capitalism, a climate that must be overcome by responsible leadership.

Many still recognize that soundly based business success is crucial to the economy, the only sure source of jobs, a proper living wage, and the money to adequately fund muchneeded social programs.

It is likely that many British Columbians still support free enterprise. It’s just free-for-all enterprise they have a problem with.

Flyway fears Environmentalists worry potential loss of wildlife habitat could pose a threat to migratory birds Boaz Joseph file photo

large bird with its long, narrow wings outstretched hovers overhead in the grey sky.

"OK, see that? You guys got that?" shouts Tom Bearrs excitedly. "That's an osprey."

A dozen members of the Delta Naturalists Society—all of them decked out in weather-appropriate waterproof gear—grab their binoculars, zoom in on the raptor, and express acclamations.

It's an encouraging start to an otherwise dreary day, but there are plenty more species these casual birders hope to spot on their recent outing to Iona Beach Regional Park in Richmond, so they trudge ahead.

"The reason we came here today is because this is the only place, that we know of, where yellow-headed black birds nest," said Bearrs, president of the society.

The yellow-headed blackbird is just one of many migratory species returning north to nest after spending the winter down south. Another "target" bird for the group is the newly-arrived purple martin.

Located along the Pacific Flyway migration route, the Fraser River delta is an important stopover for millions of travelling birds annually. The Fraser estuary has been identified as an Important Bird Area under a BirdLife International program and some portions, including George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island, have been designated for conservation.

World Migratory Bird Day, which this year takes place May 12-13, is a global awareness-raising campaign initiated to highlight the need to protect migratory birds and their habitats. In South Delta, some environmentalists are concerned the spate of residential, commercial and industrial developments proposed for the area could pose a risk to wildlife populations, including migratory birds.

Vital habitat As the Delta naturalists venture deeper into the park, they stop periodically at marshy ponds to admire winged species flitting about. Tsawwassen resident, author and South Delta Leader columnist Anne Murray, known as the "guru" of the group, easily identifies a yellow-headed blackbird perched in the distant reeds without the aid of her fogged up binoculars.

Murray explains that many avian species are currently just

arriving, just leaving or simply passing through the area as they make their annual journey from California, Mexico and South America back to their breeding grounds in Yukon and Alaska.

"If you live on insects then you're not going to survive much in the frozen north," Murray said. "But in the summer it's fine, there's tons of insects in the Arctic."

With developments on the horizon in South Delta, she worries what might become of vital wildlife habitats and feeding grounds.

"I'm really concerned when I see any loss of farmland," she said. "The farmland is used very heavily by migrant birds, particularly the ducks, geese and birds like the sandpipers.

"I was just driving through an area that's slated for development on the Tsawwassen First Nation lands yesterday and there was a huge flock of snow geese on that farmland," she noted.

Murray said habitat is essential to keep birds around.

"And the habitat has to be something that supplies lots of insects and lots of nesting places."

Farmland threatened Delta-South independent MLA Vicki Huntington last month released information revealing a vast amount of local farmland could be slated for industrial, port-related development. Apart from the arguments of eroding the environment and food security, at stake with the possible development is a destabilization of the Pacific Flyway, Huntington said after releasing the information.

“Without the upland forage that agricultural land provides, the ecosystem supporting the Pacific migratory bird flyway will collapse,” she said.

David Bradbeer, program coordinator at Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust, told the Leader in an earlier interview that the area Huntington highlighted is used by a diversity of wildlife, including migratory waterfowl, shorebirds and wintering raptors.

"Those farms support migratory waterfowl that will be moving south in the fall. Some of them will spend the entire winter here and a lot of the time they feed on the agricultural fields," he said.

Through stewardship programs, the trust encourages Delta farmers to plant grassland set-asides, winter cover crops and hedgegrows and grass margins, all of which provide habitat for a diversity of wildlife, including migratory birds.

"It's a fairly simple math equation. Less habitat, less birds," Bradbeer said.

Mitigation efforts Port Metro Vancouver is in the early phases of planning its proposed Deltaport expansion called T2, which would see the addition of another multi-berth container terminal at Roberts Bank.

"Certainly migratory birds and the impact on their habitat is of significant importance for the port," said Darrell Desjardins, director of environmental programs for the port authority.

"Any port expansion, and that includes port operation, has to be respectful of the migratory birds and the ecological significance of Roberts Bank."

He said early field studies are underway to look at significant species, such as the western sandpiper, that are currently moving through and feeding at Roberts Bank.

After Deltaport's third berth opened in 2010, Desjardins said a study, reviewed by independent scientists, reviewed the effect of the project on migratory and resident birds.

"We were looking to see if there was any ecosystem trends attributed to Deltaport third berth and the good news is that there has been no negative impacts on waterfowl or shorebirds utilizing Roberts Bank," he said.

In the past Desjardins said the port has undertaken a number of projects to protect birds, including a barn owl nesting program and a habitat program along the east causeway.

"We actually excavated about four kilometres of shoreline to create fish and wildlife habitat," he said. "That shoreline has been developed to enhance fish resources, but also feeding areas for waterfowl and shorebirds."

The environmental assessment for T2 will include a review of area farmland.

"The port would be considering those environmental assessments and looking at ways to offset those impacts to agriculture and wildlife use."

Entertain and educate Back at Iona park, the Delta birders wander around the sewage lagoons at the nearby wastewater treatment plant.

"Have you seen the solitary piper?" Bearss asks a passing worker in a reflective vest and hardhat.

The man shakes his head, no, clearly accustomed to bird watchers scouring the treated sewage pools for rare species.

Bearrs says there is a great deal of concern among the Delta naturalists when it comes to looming developments and, while many of his members write letters and advocate for environmental conservation, lobbying is not his personal forte.

The Delta naturalists set up educational displays at community events throughout the year and organize monthly presentations at Cammidge House.

Junior Jays take flight Ladner core help team start season unbeaten Sporting a core of Ladner talent, the North Delta Blue Jays Junior Premier baseball team is off to a good start after winning all four games against the visiting Okanagan A's in their season opening series recently at Mackie Park.

After a successful season last year playing Bantam AAA together, the Ladner contingent successful in making the team included Austin Ell, Mike Smith, Dayton Wilson, Mal-

colm Boehm, and Brock Morgan.

They endured a series of tryouts last September that included Fall Ball, winter training at the Richmond Oval and Strength/Conditioning at Douglas College in New Westminster.

Now, along with the Senior Blue Jays, the Junior Jays compete in the wood bat only Premier Baseball League (PBL) which is the highest level of baseball in the province.

The Junior Jays also have players from Richmond, Surrey, Cloverdale, and Vancouver.

The league consists of 12 teams from the Okanagan, Vancouver Island and Lower Mainland.

They play around 75 games from April to August. Some notable past PBL alumni include Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Jeff Francis and Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau.

GVHBA to hold annual spring home renovation seminar

Mark your calendars for May 15 With about $7.8 billion expected to be spent on home renovation this year in B.C. alone, the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association will hold its annual spring home renovation seminar on May 15 to give homeowners a few tips about hiring the best renovator.

The event will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Croation Cultural Centre.

More than 40 RenoMark renovators and suppliers will be available before the seminar between 5:30 and 7:30 so homeowners can discuss their plans.

To be accepted into the RenoMark program, contractors must adhere to a 10-condition code of conduct.

“There is no shortage of fly-by-night

operators taking advantage of trusting homeowners,” says GVHBA President and CEO Peter Simpson. “Dealing in the cash-only underground economy exposes homeowners to personal liability and close scrutiny from municipal bylaw officials, provincial safety-compliance authorities and others.”

Participants will learn about various stages of the renovation process, from design to choosing a contractor.

Both schemes feature stainless-steel appliances, under-cabinet lighting and a spacious ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower and ceramic tile surround. Every home includes in-suite laundry, so you’ll never need to worry about making time for getting a load in the wash.

Woodbridge built on the lessons learned from their past project, Willow Grand, when they decided on what would be included in Salix.

“It genuinely makes me excited that we covered a lot of the bases that purchasers were looking for,” Carlsen says. Among them is the increased storage space that each home at Salix has, including kitchen pantries and an individual secure storage locker in the parking area that Carlsen calls the “mini-garage.”

The neighbourhood has been one of the big draws for buyers, Carlsen says.

“We’re really close to everything Willowbrook (shopping centre) has to offer,” he notes. The surrounding neighbourhood is quiet and family friendly, with several schools, restaurants and leisure activities just minutes away.

“This is an opportunity to own on the Clayton (Heights) hillside at Langley City prices,” Carlsen says. “It’s never been done before.”

Salix opened for sale in mid-April, and already over 15 per cent of the 69 homes have been sold.

“The response has been fantastic,” Carlsen says. “We’ve hit the mark with our storage lockers, options and price point.”

Early birds are also able to choose where their parking stall will be, along with their mini-garage.
