Public school teachers have voted 73 per cent in favour of withdrawing extracurricular activities province-wide to intensify pressure on the provincial government in the continuing labour dispute. The vote of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) could affect everything from high school graduation ceremonies to upcoming sports events. Meanwhile, a decision of B.C.’s Labour Relations Board has ordered unionized teachers to prepare second-term report cards immediately, something some had resisted as part of job action. The ruling gives teachers until April 27 to have them ready. Public school teachers walked out for three days in March before the provincial government passed Bill 22, legislating them back to work with a six-month cooling off period. A total of 21,625 teachers voted to ban volunteer work, while 7,846 voted no. BCTF

president Susan Lambert said cancelling extracurricular activities was a wrenching choice. “Teachers struggle with this because these activities bring so much joy to our engagement with students,â€? she said. “We know this will mean the loss of some highly valued activities, and we sincerely regret that. But we have to look at the bigger picture and the longer term.â€? The decision is expected to pit teachers who still want to coach teams and run student clubs in deÂżance of the BCTF decision against more militant teachers who will be able to ask their union locals to take disciplinary action. Education Minister George Abbott told reporters the BCTF vote to ban extracurricular activities will divide teachers, punish students and leave parents overseeing functions like grad ceremonies. “It’s their personal decision,â€? Abbott said. “And I don’t believe it’s appropriate for the BCTF to be trying to interfere in that.â€? Abbott also defended his choice of a mediator in the dispute, Dr. Charles Jago, who the BCTF alleges is biased. If talks with the BCTF fail to reach a mediated settlement, the government would likely legislate a two-year contract, ending June 30, 2013. Abbott said he can’t guarantee that the dispute won’t disrupt the start of the school year next fall. The action plan approved by the BCTF membership also calls for a public awareness campaign to mobilize public opposition to Bill 22, a possible future vote on a full withdrawal of services and work in advance of the May 2013 election “to bring in a new governmentâ€? that will repeal the legislation.

City bylaw reminder for cemetery flowers With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday May 13, staff at the Westlawn Cemetery are poised for a large inÀux of Àowers and other adornments. However, the City wishes to remind residents that only fresh cut Àowers are allowed on memorials at Westlawn or alternatively arti¿cial Àowers in the Mausoleum. On June 1, 2010 all adornments, with the exception of Àowers, were to be removed from memorials at Westlawn

Cemetery in Cranbrook. This follows the adoption of the new City of Cranbrook Cemetery Bylaw, by Council on February 22, 2010 to comply with changes made to the British Columbia Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act introduced in 2004, that includes the issue of adornments. Under the bylaw, fresh cut Àowers, wreaths and Àoral offerings may be placed in the authorized Àower container during the period of March 16

Blaze destroys four businesses–sees dramatic rescue Submitted

The investigation is underway into a serious ¿re in downtown Cranbrook overnight that engulfed four downtown businesses. At 1:24 a.m. on Tuesday April 24, Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services received a call of a ¿re in a building located at 806 Baker Street, between 8th Avenue South and 9th Avenue South. The call was made by an alert RCMP of¿cer doing a routine patrol of the downtown core. The

of¿cer had noticed smoke coming out of the rear of the building and upon closer inspection, saw Àame through a rear window. Other police of¿cers responded before the ¿re department was able to arrive and while the of¿cers were unable to gain access to the building because of erupting Àames, they were able to make enough noise to wake the occupants of the building. beautification campaign that benefits our community as a whole. Through the effort of many volunteers, each year, tons of litter and debris is removed from parks, ravines, neighbourhoods, streets, schools and public areas including in and around business premises. In 2009, over 4,300 projects were completed in BC municipalities representing a $4 million donation in labour made by our Pitch-In volunteers. The City of Cranbrook’s annual Pitch-In campaign is under way for another year and runs from April 23rd – 30th! Chamber members, the Downtown Business Association and residents of Cranbrook have been very supportive of this program. In the past two years alone, participants from a variety of schools and organizations in our community collected almost 500 bags of refuse. The 20-Minute Makeover: As part of Cranbrook’s Pitch-In Week Campaign, this activity is designed to increase participation by encouraging business owners and citizens to take 20-minutes and spruce up the area around their business or home. Twenty minutes can make a difference! A clean and litter-free community can attract tourism and promote economic activity, as well as encourage a sense of pride amongst citizens. Low Flow Toilet Rebate Returns May 1

This popular rebate program returns to provide an incentive for homeowners who install a low flow toilet, replacing a higher volume fixture (greater than 6 litres per flush). There is a lifetime maximum of two $50 rebates (maximum $100) per p residence. Submittingg an application pp does not guarantee g a rebate – each application will be evaluated and processed on a first come, first serve basis. To qualify for a rebate, you must be a property owner in the limits of the City of Cranbrook. Gregarious Gardener by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

Time to plant some bulbs When people hear the word bulb, some automatically think about the popular spring bloomers, such as crocus and tulips. However, many summer blooming garden favourites are grown from bulbs, tubers or root clumps as well, and now is the time to plant them. These summer blooming bulbs include dahlias, gladioli, lilies and even peonies and hostas. The best site for bulbs is on well-drained soil with organic matter added. Also consider the light requirements of the plants – you will find them on the package. Many summer blooming bulbs need full sun or partial shade. Bulbs can also make a great addition to your planters and baskets. After choosing an appropriate site for your bulbs to grow, dig with a fork or spade to loosen the soil. Add some bulb food or bone meal to the soil to stimulate strong root development. If you are planting small bulbs like cyclamen or anemones, use a trowel to dig a hole at the recommended depth - see on the package. For larger bulbs, such as dahlia tubers and cannas, it is better to dig a large hole and mix the bulb food or bone meal at the bottom of the hole. Place the bulb on top of this mix, making sure that the eye (growth bud) is facing up before burying the bulb. Then all you have to do is water, fertilize and enjoy. Water the bulbs after planting and give them a good drink every time the soil is dry after the first flower buds appear. Fertilizing the plants monthly from when the shoots emerge until the plants reach full flower will keep them beautiful. Some summer blooming bulbs, especially dahlias and gladioli, might need extra support to remain upright. A wire support, such as a peony ring, is an easy way to hold up plants with weak stems and large, heavy blooms. Stakes will also work, however it is a good idea to drive them into place at planting time to avoid accidental damage to the bulbs. The different types of bulbs die down at different rates. Cut them down to soil level after the leaves have all yellowed and fallen over. Fading leaves can take away from the overall look of your garden. If they bother you, try growing your bulbs with low-growing herbaceous plants (plants that have no woody growth). They leaf out later on in the season and hide the bulb foliage. Most summer flowering bulbs have to be dug up in the fall and stored indoors through the winter months. Use a spading fork to lift the bulbs from the ground. Some bulbs, such as dahlias, should be stored in clumps with soil around them, on a bed of lightly moistened peat moss or sawdust in a cool place. Other bulbs, such as cannas, have to be washed and dried before they can be stored away from sunlight in a cool, dry basement, cellar or garage. Keep your bulbs well labelled so you know what you are planting next spring. Joe Pires ball hockey tournament in May The Joe Pires Memorial Tournament will be

taking place in Sparwood B.C on May 12

Friday, April 27, 2012 Kootenay News Advertiser at the Sparwood Recreation Center. The 2nd annual ball hockey tournament will feature 12 teams playing games of 3 on 3 ball hockey; as well as a cabaret afterwards. All proceeds

of the event will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society in an effort to prevent this disease. This event is dedicated to the memory of long time Sparwood

Resident Joe Pires who lost his battle with cancer in December 2011. This event gathers family, friends and community members in an effort to raise awareness for cancer as well as honor a great man through sport and entertainment. The ball hockey tournament consists of rosters of 7-10 players; with

registration starting at 9:30am May 12th. The Cabaret will begin at 9:00pm in the Sparwood Curling Rink. This is 2nd annual event looks to capitalize on a successful ¿rst year which raised over $9200 for the Canadian Cancer Society. The event has grown from 8 to 12 teams in only a year. This event

Designed to elevate the ball on the teeoff, the tee has evolved considerably over the years. This simple little wooden peg has made a lot of progress and still remains an important accessory for golfers. The time is long gone when players used a pile of sand to elevate the ball! While Klassen and Culter are excited about the progress made in Grand Guave they are quick to point out that most of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince remains in ruins. “While Grand Gauve has become cleaner, safer and more economically advantaged, most of Haiti’s devastation from the 2010 earthquake remains unchanged.” The Hungry For Life Gala and auction is open to everyone and takes place on Saturday, May 12th at the Cranbrook Curling Club. Food drive coming for Hunger Awareness Week Hunger is a complex issue with many root causes and in a country as prosperous as Canada it’s shocking to see so many struggle to get enough food. Close to 900,000 individuals turn to food banks for support each month in Canada, and of those, 38% are children and youth. The problem of hunger is a persistent one, with food banks providing comparable levels of food and other assistance for the better part of a decade. Food Banks Canada, along with its provincial members and food banks across the country, including Cranbrook, Kimberly Helping Hands, Creston and Invermere are asking all Canadians to mark Hunger Awareness Week and to Give It Up for Hunger - to make a positive impact on the issue of hunger across the country. What does giving it up really mean? It’s as easy as three simple steps:

Give It Up – Close to 900,000 Canadians have relied on food banks this past month. Know what it’s like to have food out of reach by challenging yourself to give up your lunches or a food staple for the week. Give a Shout- Share your experience- go online and show your support via Facebook, Twitter or blogging or wear a Hunger Awareness Week sticker. Give It Out - Donate food, funds or your time to a local food bank. “We wanted a way for anyone and everyone to feel connected to our cause and to realize that their simple actions can really change lives for those in need,” said Jackie Jensen. The 2nd Annual Trashion Fashion Show, held during Earth Week attracted a crowd of 150 people to the Tamarack Shopping Centre. Customers and guests were delighted by ingenious recycled fashions designed, created and modeled by Mount Baker art students. Clothing was made out of discarded items which included garbage bags, bike tires, tablecloths, ties, paper, juice packs, old blankets, oven mitts, egg cartons, broken cd’s, and food wrappers. Forty-¿ve students participated and the goal was to showcase what can be done and what can be viewed as art. The show was well received and out¿ts were more elaborate and better constructed as students were inspired from last year’s

event. Held during Earth Week, viewers were encouraged to continue to reduce, re-use and recycle. The Tamarack Centre also launched their Fare Fight for Food Initiative to raise food and donations for the Cranbrook Food Bank Society. Guests at the fashion show donated change and raised over $100 dollars and donated ¿ve

bags of food. Guests took home paper bags and were asked to ¿ll them with non-perishable food items or toiletries and return them to the Tamarack Centre Administration Of¿ce. The Tamarack Centre will be collecting and weighing food on behalf of the food bank. Bags and donation cans are available throughout the Centre and food will be collected throughout the summer until October. Look for future food based events to take place at the mall in the coming months.

Meadowbrook residents form society Land use issues in the Meadowbrook area have prompted residents and other users to form a society. The purpose of the society is to preserve and enhance the Meadowbrook area for residents and other recreational users. At a meeting held on April 5, 2012, twentytwo people gathered to adopt the draft constitution and bylaws and elect an interim board. Jane Walter, RDEK

Area E Director, who was in attendance commented: “I am delighted that this association is being formed. It will facilitate communication among Meadowbrook residents and others concerned with issues in the area. It will also provide me with another way to ascertain the wishes of my constituents. I urge all residents and others wishing to preserve and enhance the Meadowbrook area to become members of

the new association and support the efforts of its board of directors.” The ¿rst interim board meeting was held on April 10, 2012. Arising from concerns expressed at this founding meeting, it was agreed to pursue creating a park at Cherry Creek Falls. FORTISBC ENERGY UTILITIES INTEND TO AMALGAMATE NATURAL GAS SERVICE IN B.C. AND IMPLEMENT COMMON RATES On April 11, 2012, the FortisBC Energy Utilities applied to the British Columbia Utilities Commission to amalgamate their natural gas utilities across the province and to implement common rates and services across their service areas starting January 1, 2014. Currently, FortisBC Energy Utilities is made up of three separate natural gas companies, operating in six service areas. The companies have their own services, service agreements (tariffs) and rates. If approved, the application would combine the three companies into one, under a single tariff, with common rates for the various regions. This Application has different implications for customers in each service area. If approved, customers in the Vancouver Island and Whistler service areas will see rate decreases, while customers in the Lower Mainland, Columbia, Inland, and Fort Nelson service areas will see an overall rate increase. Back alleys don’t recycle unwanted electronics Environmental

Consumers and businesses in British Columbia have an environmentally sound recycling option.You can drop off a range of acceptable products at designated Collection Sites throughout the province without charge (see “Acceptable Products” list for details). The Electronics Products Recycling Association (EPRA) is a national, not-for-profit extended producer responsibility program. EPRA has contracted Encorp Pacific (Canada) to deliver the stewardship program under the Return-It™ Electronics brand in BC. The program works to recover and recycle all regulated electronics in a responsible, cost effective manner. The Return-It system also ensures BC’s unwanted electronics are collected and recycled in an environmentally and socially responsible manner by using the Recycler Qualification Program (RQP). Since 2007, the EPRA program, previously run by ESABC, has diverted over 70.6 million kilograms of electronics out of BC landfills and illegal export, while recovering precious metals and other materials for use in future products. How Electronics are Recycled: Electronics collected in BC are sent to approved recyclers in North America. The items are broken down using various manual and mechanical processes. The remaining products are separated into their individual components for recovery. Through a variety of refining and smelting processes, the
