Home & Recreation Show 2012 Building a community The Kin Club of Cranbrook is known for its generosity and the hard work of its members.

Using provincial and federal grants, along with local fundraising, the club has produced some wonderful city mainstays.

Here are a few “bricks and mortar� examples of how this club has impacted the city and its people with projects that will leave a legacy for future generations.

The Kinsmen Park is the result of hard work by the club, who garnered volunteers from all walks of city life to help make it as beautiful as it is. (From left) Tennis anyone? The Kinsmen Tennis Courts have been a mainstay for health conscious Cranbrook tennis fans. The Kinsmen Spray Park, now in its 12th year of operation, recently was resurfaced thanks in part to a grant from Tire Stewardship BC, with the rest of the funds being raised by the club. Its surface of recycled tires put through a process provides a safe, non-slip surface so kids can be kids in this one-of-a-kind summer attraction.

Categories: Elementary (under 13 years old) • Secondary (13-18 years old) Awards will be presented to the top 3 entries in each category.

The goal of the contest is to construct the strongest bridge possible with 100 popsicle sticks and white glue.

A matchbox car must be able to drive over the bridge on a deck made of construction paper.

Kin Canada is the nation’s largest allCanadian service club organization. Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin clubs across the country work to better their communities, enhance the wellbeing of Canadians and improve the environ-

ment. The Association boasts a proud 90-year history dedicated to fostering life-long friendships while ‘Serving the Community’s Greatest Need.’

Membership – More than 7,000 members belong to approximately

500 Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin clubs. Kinsmen clubs are predominantly male and Kinette clubs are predominantly female. Kin clubs have a mixed membership of men and women.

Clubs undertake a wide variety of local

fundraising and service projects. Each club operates autonomously when determining how it fundraises and distributes the funds raised within its local community.

More than $1 billion raised – Since its founding in 1920, Kin Canada clubs have donated more than $1 billion to Canadian causes, communities and individuals in need, as well as to disaster relief efforts beyond our borders.

History – The Association was founded

by Harold (Hal) Rogers on Feb. 20, 1920 in Hamilton, Ontario.

After returning from the First World War, he missed the camaraderie of the men he had served with. Looking to join a club, Rogers decided to join Rotary but his application was rejected because it was Rotary’s policy not to admit two members

from the same business establishment; Rogers’ father, with whom he worked, was already a member. As a result of this rejection, Rogers and a small group of men gathered for a dinner meeting and became the ¿rst Kinsmen club The Kinsmen Club of Hamilton.

Portraits of Honour Tour National Project Cambridge (Preston) Kinsman and artist Dave Sopha painted a profound 10’ x 50’ mural depicting the 157 Canadian military personnel who lost their lives serving in Afghanistan. The coastto-coast tour hopes to raise $1.5 million for the Military Families Fund and the Canadian forces personnel returning home with physical or emotional injuries.
