What’s New on the NorthStar Rails to Trails The NorthStar Rails to Trails, a 26 km paved trail between the Cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley, continues to be a huge draw for residents and tourists. The 2.5 metre wide paved trail, is designed for a wide variety of non-motorized uses, with the exception of motorized wheelchairs. The trail meanders its way through a natural setting of forests and grasslands, encompassing fantastic views of the St.Mary’s River and the Rocky and Purcell mountain ranges. The trail is well used by a variety of users including families, commuters, and fitness enthusiasts. Over the past 8 months, a number of new initiatives and enhancements have been put into place to be ready for Spring 2012. Among the trail enhancements include new trail extensions in both Cities. Kimberley has added a link into Marysville, and Cranbrook extended the trail further into the City by an additional kilometer. The trail additions were made possible through funds from the Canada-British Columbia Rural Infrastructure Fund, Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives and both Cities.

The Rotary Club continued to be a primary partner on the Cranbrook end through their vision to link the trail with the Rotary Way trail system. A number of private property owners and agencies worked with the City and Rotary Club to provide essential components to this project. Thanks goes out to Ed and Linda Berukoff, Hal Anderson, Wildstone Golf Course, BC Hydro, and Fortis. A new parking lot has been constructed through an initiative from Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The parking lot is located along Wycliffe Park Road. Travel 5.3 km from the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce to Kimberley, and follow the signage. This new parking lot is also home to a new washroom. One of three located along the trail. Another washroom will be located at the Cranbrook trail head. The access is 2.3 km from the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, turning left on Collinson Road. The third washroom is located along the highway crossing entering Marysville. The washrooms will be open from mid-May to mid-October. Recently, the trail formally became part of the Trans Canada Trail System. The trail will benefit from increased national and international exposure as a scenic link that will one day span the entire country. The NorthStar Rails to Trails Advisory Committee continues be an important partner in supporting the trail. The committee will soon evolve in to a society that will provide maintenance, promotion and other trail enhancements. Contact Chris New at the Leisure Services Department at 489-0040, ext. 252 for information on how to become involved with the trail society.

Community Trees for Life

Sustain those memories of a special person, whose life you wish to commemorate, or perhaps celebrate a meaningful event such as a birth, wedding, anniversary, retirement, graduation or special achievement. Plant a tree of your choice and identify your gift with a celebratory plaque. The City of Cranbrook and Cranbrook in Bloom Committee have developed site plans for each of the following locations to ensure that your ‘Tree for Life’ is placed in the best possible position and is shown to its best advantage. These “Trees for Life” locations will provide many years of enjoyment for the donor and public alike. In future years

these locations will become ‘demonstration urban forests’. The following sites have been chosen for their readily available source of water, accessibility and visibility for all to enjoy. Moir Park, Gyro Park, Cranbrook RecPlex and Rotary Park. Memory Lane in Idlewild Park is a natural setting and is also available but care must be provided by the donor as there is no irrigation at this site. The cost of the trees (including a bracelet plaque) are $535 including delivery, planting and ongoing care. For more information call 250-489-0040, extension 246 for Carrie or extension 252 for Chris.

The fitness facility offers many benefits such as: • Improve cardiovascular and muscle endurance, strength, range of motion, balance, coordination and agility. • Provide a balanced exercise program. • Give variety to your exercise regime - there are numerous variations for all abilities. • Decrease your risk of falls. • Increase strength to the muscles that support your joints. • Increase your bone mineral density. • Decrease pain. • Provide you with the fitness so that you can better enjoy your recreational activities with decreased risk of injury. • Reverse many of the age related changes to your body and mind. A Senior Ambassador program will return in late Spring,

which will provide knowledgable community volunteers who will be available at the facility to provide feedback and assistance with the use of the fitness park. Hours will be posted at the Leisure Services front desk. RecPlex Exercise Stations Numerous seniors have been enjoying the opportunity to walk the RecPlex concourse. A new fitness opportunity has been developed on the RecPlex concourse. Senior Ambassadors and personal trainers John and Debbie Mandryk have worked with the City to develop a series of four fitness stations located at each corner of the RecPlex. The stations were designed to utilize features in the arena such as stairs and handrails, to provide simple exercises that focus on four areas of functionality – push, pull, squat and step-ups – all functional movements we do every day.

Why shoes?

The aquatic shoes provide the wearer with more stability and traction for an upright stance when moving through the water. They reduce the effects of impact when jumping in shallow water and add resistance in deep and shallow water, thereby further helping build strength. They help to prevent accidental slips on the deck and in the pool. They also help protect the feet from infection and protect the joints from impact. What kind of shoes can you wear? Old trainers (as long as they are clean!), surf walkers, sport sandals, or specific shoes made for aquatic fitness. Ask any of our aquafit instructors where to buy these types of shoes, they will be happy to assist you!
