PRINCE RUPERT - The Lax Kw’alaams First Nation now owns an engineering company.

The formation of Embark Engineering was announced on Wednesday at the National Aboriginal Business Opportunities Conference in Prince Rupert, and the company is an undertaking of both the Lax Kw’alaams Band and established engineering firm Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd. “We’ve had a long-standing

working relationship with Lax Kw’alaams, and this evolved from discussions that we had while attending the conference last year,” said Frank Belfry of Kerr Wood Leidal, who will be taking on the role of general manager for Embark Engineering.

“We’ve been working with Kerr Wood Leidal for 30 years.

They’ve done great work and we saw this as an opportunity for a partnership...It’s in the early stages right now, but we want to get things moving as quickly as we can,” said Lax Kw’alaams mayor Garry Reece.

The company will have its head office in Lax Kw’alaams, with an office in Prince Rupert possibly in the future, and band manager Wayne Drury will be CEO while Reece will be chairman of the company. Embark Engineering will introduce academic programs and scholarship in the future to help create engineering careers for the people of Lax Kw’alaams.

“We will identify individuals who want to follow through with engineering careers, get them the right skills and training and go from there,” said Belfry.

Enbridge line safe, engineer KITIMAT - A geotechnical engineer working for Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines told Kitimat Council that, from a personal perspective, he wouldn’t work with the company if he didn’t believe the pipeline could be constructed safely.

The engineer, Drum Cavers, was in town for a talk to the Kitimat Chamber of Commerce and then later to Kitimat Council for a shortened version of his presentation.

Covering a variety of subjects relating to the landscape that the proposed pipeline would face from Bruderheim, Alberta to Kitimat, Cavers set out work that has been done to mitigate the risks, which range from rock slides to earthquakes.

On the subject of earthquakes, Cavers said that the nearest coastal plate is 300 km away, west of Haida Gwaii. In 1918, he said, there was a 6.0 earthquake about 300 km south of the proposed route, near Valemont.

On the route itself, there is no known active faults that could break the surface, he said.

The welded steel pipeline, he said, would be very resistant to seismic motion.

One of the ways they’ve routed the pipeline is with a technology called LIDAR, which essentially allows them to map the surface with lasers, taking away obstructions such as trees.

Kitimat Valley is another area of focus for designers and Cavers said that areas of known rock falls will be reinforced to reduce the risk of affect on the pipe.

As for the terminal, it has been relocated to avoid large clay deposits they would otherwise have to deal with.

When Cavers made his presentation to Kitimat Council, the subject of Nimbus Mountain came up, a subject of discussion from earlier meetings.

On that subject, Cavers said that there are some slides along the corridor to Nim-

bus Mountain but that the pipeline would be built well below and sideways from affected areas.

Responding to questions from Phil Germuth, Cavers said that he couldn’t guarantee no pipeline spill but still believed in the project.

“There’s no absolute guarantee for anything in life. What we are doing is making the risk... very, very low,” he said.

He added that based on his love of west coast life he wouldn’t be involved with the pipeline if he thought it was unsafe.

The maps that produce let geologists see areas of potential rock slides and allows them to adjust the route, which has been done at several spots.

For the Kitimat Valley one of the larger concerns is groundwater blow-off, where the pressure of groundwater has the potential to push on the pipe. Drainage will be the key to addressing that issue, he said.

And as for snow, snow avalanches are not a concern for pipeline safety with how it has been designed, he said.

Business Expo interest rises

TERRACE - The 2012 Business Expo was a full house this year, as every available space was filled by a booth.

The expo was hosted by the Terrace and district Chamber of Commerce and was a three-day event April 20-22 at the Terrace Sportsplex.

“We’re very happy with the show this year,” said Carol Fielding, executive director at the Chamber of Commerce.

This year with 84 participants the event was fully subscribed and there was a waiting list, said Fielding, adding that the success

of the expo is a good sign for business in Terrace.

Awards were given out in retail, community/government, service, commercial, judges’ overall and exhibitors’ choice categories.

Winning the best retail booth was Nor-Burd RV. It had a large presence in the Hidber arena section of the Sportsplex, moving a number of recreational vehicles and other units to the location.

Second place went to the Flying Fish.

The best community and government booth was awarded to BC Timber Sales, and Live Smart BC took second place.

The best commercial booth

was won by Skeena Valley Exterior, and St. John’s Ambulance was awarded second place.

The judges’ choice overall booth was won by Winton Global Homes, and second place in that category went to the Kitselas First Nation.

The exhibitors’ choice award was won by Nor-Burd RV. Winners were chosen based on signage, professionalism, first impressions, product knowledge and friendliness of exhibitors.

Judges also looked for exhibits following the theme of the expo this year which is powering up the future. That’s in reference to the impact of the Northwest Transmission Line.

Prince Rupert Port Authority CEO talks to Smithers Chamber

SMITHERS - If Don Krusel, president and CEO of the Prince Rupert Port Authority is right, expansion of the Prince Rupert port facilities can only be good news for northern British Columbia, including the Smithers economy.

“Over 2,000 new jobs have been created right across northern British Columbia as a result of the activity at the Prince Rupert port,” Krusel said.

“That includes extra train crews and that I know has a huge impact for the Smithers economy.”

Talk of expanding the Prince Rupert port is music to the ears of Taylor Bachrach, mayor of the Town of Smithers.

“The biggest positive benefit we’ve realized is the increased employment in Smithers associated with increased CN rail traffic,” Bachrach said.

Although 2011 was a good year for the port, Krusel, speaking to the Smithers Chamber of Commerce last week, said the future was even brighter.

“Today we are at a pivotal point in the history of the port,” Krusel said.

“We are looking for unprecedented growth.”

That growth, Krusel explained, will come as trade increases between Canada and Asia, especially China.

“The best is yet to come,” Krusel said.

An increase in traffic at the Prince Rupert terminal means an increase in railway traffic carrying goods to the port.

That, Krusel said, was good news for Smithers, noting that the local rail yard has already seen an increase in personnel to deal with the increased traffic. The increased rail traffic also means CN is improving its rail infrastructure, which also means more economic activity in Smithers.

“CN has indicated they have some substantial infrastructure upgrades planned for Smithers, to accommodate increased rail use,” Bachrach said.

Krusel pointed to two factors as key indicators of China’s future needs for natural resources, resources that Canada has in abundance.

ization is occurring in China. Secondly, along with that urbanization is the growth of the Chinese middle class, an estimated 35 million people join the middle class each year.

“They need resources to supply those needs,” Krusel said.

But to take advantage of those trade opportunities, the Prince Rupert port facilities will have to expand, up to five times its current capacity, according to the 2020 Gateway Vision report produced by the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

With increased trade in natural resources, Krusel said mining and exploration companies based in Smithers would also benefit through greater access to Asian markets.

The recent rezoning of the land at the Smithers airport, could also contribute to future success of resource companies based in Smithers.

“The plans for the airport are broadly linked to increased resource development in the Northwest, particularly mining and exploration, and Smithers’ strong reputation as a base for these operations.” Bachrach said.

KITIMAT - Kitimat Hospice Palliative Care Association is celebrating 20 years in Kitimat.

The non-profit association consists of an executive, directors, trained and screen hospice visits, a volunteer coordinator and an office/activities volunteer.

Working from their office on the second

floor of the City Centre Mall, their goal is to help support people living with terminal illness and their caregivers, both in the hospital and home setting, while respecting confidentiality and personal beliefs. Referrals are accepted from members of the public, doctors, nurses, home support, family, friends, clergy or any other concerned person. Our motto is “You are not alone

... asking for help can make a difficult road easier.”

From May 6 to May 12 the Hospice Association will have a display table outside their office and the public is invited to take a look.

Brianna Gallina, a graduate of Bear Valley School, received the $1,000 scholarship from the Ministry of Education for successfully completing the Secondary School Apprenticeship program.

In order to qualify, she maintained a C+ average and completed 1,100 hours towards her certification as a cook.

Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) is a career program that provides students with the opportunity to

begin an apprenticeship while still in high school, and to earn high school credits for doing so.

SSA students complete up to 480 hours of work experience that counts towards their apprenticeship and course credits.

Youth apprentices must be 19 and under and complete their SSA workbased training by three months after graduation.

Like other apprentices, Secondary School Apprentices are responsible for finding an employer who will hire them and commit to their training as a sponsor.

Lack of quorum cancels budget meeting

PRINCE RUPERT - It was standing room only at the April 23 special meeting of the Prince Rupert School District board of education, with a final vote on the budget expected.

Unfortunately for the crowd that lined the board room and spilled out into the hallway, mostly teachers and staff and many dressed in shirts in protest of Bill 22, the meeting and the vote never came to be.

At seven p.m., the scheduled start time of the special meeting to give third and final reading to the Annual Budget Bylaw for 2012-2013, only trustees Tina Last, Bart Kuntz and Terri-Lynne Huddlestone were in attendance. With four trustees missing there was no quorum present.

As per procedure, board chair Last announced that the board would wait 30 minutes before ruling the meeting couldn’t take place due to a lack of quorum. At 7:30 p.m., with no additional trustees in attendance, the gallery was informed the meeting had to be cancelled.

The meeting to vote on the 2012/2013 budget has been rescheduled to April 30 at seven p.m. at the school board office.

Book Prize finalist authors coming to Kitimat

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Public Library will be hosting two BC Book Prize finalists during the authors’ tour of the province.

The free events will include public readings from the authors.

In Northern B.C. residents can expect to see Charlotte Gill, author of Eating Dirt and shortlisted for the

Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize, and Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award.

With her is Pamela Porter, author of I’ll Be Watching, and shortlisted for the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize.

Signed books will also be offered for sale.

Kitimat is the final stop for the pair and they’ll be in town May 2, at 7 p.m. at the library.

KITIMAT - A 20-year export licence has been issued to BC LNG Export Co-operative.

Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver announced the licence on April 11.

The licence will allow the company to export liquefied natural gas from Kitimat, and this is the second licence approved for the export of gas to Asian markets.

“This export licence is another example of our government’s commitment to diversifying our energy export markets and strengthening our trading partnership with Asia,” said Oliver in a press release. “Canada is a safe, responsible, and reliable supplier of energy contributing to global energy security.”

The gas for BC LNG would come on the existing Pacific Northern Gas pipeline and possibly on the proposed Pacific Trail Pipeline.

This latest action concludes the approval of the export licence which was granted in February by the National Energy Board.

The licence allows a maximum 1.8 million tonnes of LNG exported a year.

BC LNG is a 50:50 partnership between the Haisla and LNG Partners LLC of Houston, Texas.

In February, when the NEB approved the licence, LNG Partners’ Tom Tatham said that he was looking forward to a final investment decision sometime this month.

The proposed plant could be operational as early as 2014.

Construction will employ 150-200 people over 18 to 24 months with 30-40 permanent operating jobs at the Douglas Channel site.

City sticks with roadwork plan

TERRACE - The City of Terrace is sticking to its plan to fix up more roads than first anticipated.

“We’ve just had roads that have been so deteriorated over the years here,” said mayor Dave Pernarowski of the move to add projects this year that had at first been slated for future years.

“We just need to get in and jump on it.”

The city’s draft budget contains $2.5 million for projects involving either repaving or total road reconstruction.

The largest amount, $1.1 million, will be spent on paving and pulverizing in which a machine chews up existing asphalt and part of the road base which is then used to form a new base for asphalt.

The roads to be pulverized

include two blocks of Agar Ave. from Molitor St. to Braun St., the 4600 and 4700 blocks of Straume Ave. and McConnell Ave. on the bench from Marshall St. west to Kalum Lake Drive.

“We’ve got a whole bunch of them (this year),” said the city’s roads foreman Henry Craveiro.

“We try to pick roads where we feel the base is suitable.”

By suitable, Craveiro is talking about roads with a base that needs minimal work before pavement can be laid, either in the form of pulverizing and grinding into the base, or milling the top layer of asphalt and laying on top of it.

“We call it a mill and fill,” said Craveiro.

Another $635,255 will be spent on milling a road’s surface and putting on a fresh asphalt overlay. Locations for this work

include Lakelse Ave. from Eby St. to Emerson St., Kalum St. from Lakelse Ave. to Park St. in addition to a small bit of Sparks St. in that area, and Sparks St. from Lakelse Ave. to Lazelle Ave. There is one major road reconstruction project this year and it’s taking place in the Horseshoe on the 4500 Block of Scott Ave. from Kalum St. to Hanson Rd. This will also involve work on the underlying water lines. Still to be finished from last year’s work plan are small touch ups on Davis Ave. from Kalum St. to Sparks St. Top soil and grass seed will be put down on the verges of last year’s McConnell Ave. reconstruction project on the bench.

“We don’t have a timeline on any of this for this year because we haven’t finalized a schedule to coordinate things,” said city works official Herb Dusdal of the work.

RCMP target priorities

TERRACE - Terrace’s RCMP have set their top crime-fighting priorities for 2012.

In a presentation to city council April 10, Inspector Dana Hart said four overarching themes were chosen, which his experience has taught him is an efficient way to achieve goals.

Terrace’s RCMP priorities are: deterring, disrupting and preventing alcohol and drugrelated crimes; to reduce property-related crime such a break and enters and mischief; to improve road safety by targeting distracted drivers, impaired drivers and unsafe drivers; and through partnerships and enforcement, reduce the level of family violence in the Terrace area.

By setting priorities, it means that RCMP have direction to take preventative crime-control measures in addition to reactive ones, said Hart.

“We’re going to continue ... focused and targeted enforcement,” said Hart, explaining the police force will be taking an aggressive stance on prolific offenders with a focus on rehabilitation.

“We’re going to continue to target our hotspots,” he said.

On the Statistics Canada crime severity index for communities larger than 10,000, Terrace ranked 29th from the top for its crime rate out of 238 whereas in 2009 it ranked 15 and 13 in 2008.

“Fifteen years ago it was in the top 10,” said Hart, adding that while the crime severity rate (which takes into ac-

count violent and nonviolent crime levels and compares them with other cities) has decreased, property related crimes in Terrace have gone up.

“Our property crimes, I’m ashamed to say, have continued to escalate,” said Hart. “I would speculate a significant number of our property crimes are from young persons ... directly related to alcohol abuse.”

Hartley Bay receives $250,000 from BC government for clean energy project

HARTLEY BAY - The province of BC announced on April 24 that the Gitga’at First Nation of Hartley Bay will be receiving $250,000 for a clean energy project in the community.

The money, which is equity funding for the project, will be used to support the construction

and operation of a hydroelectric facility that would virtually eliminate Hartley Bay’s dependence of diesel.The money was part of $610,000 in funding announced today from the First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund “Hartley Bay has been working to develop a clean energy solution for our community for many years in keeping

with traditional and cultural practices of caring for the environment...The Gitga’at see this as another step in reaching our goal of developing a clean energy solution for the community and thanks the Province for their support,” said Gitga’at chief Arnold Clifton, noting that the community still has much work to do.

“The First Nations Clean

Energy Business Fund has been supportive of this initiative since the inception of the fund.

The equity contribution represents about one per cent of our projected costs.”

The government notes that the hydroelectric would also create economic opportunities for Hartley Bay in the way of selling power to BC Hydro for resale to Hartley Bay residents.

PRINCE RUPERT - A report released on April 19 outlines just how affordable home ownership is in the north compared to the rest of the province.

The Northern BC Housing Affordability Study released by the Northern BC Real Estate Board is based on number from 2011, and shows 30.8 per cent of pre-tax median household income in the north is needed to cover mortgage costs, taxes, utilities and fees, while that number is 70.2 per cent across BC. When compared to Vancouver, the difference is almost 60

per cent with that figure sitting at 90.6 per cent.

In Prince Rupert in 2011, that number sat at 29.2 per cent, the fourth lowest in northern BC behind Quesnel, Mackenzie and Kitimat.That number is also the lowest since 2007, with the affordability hitting a nine year high in 2008.

In terms of the average house price, Prince Rupert is well below that of northern BC. Prince Rupert’s average selling price was $175,217 while the average for the region that stretches from the Yukon border to 100 Mile House was just under $250,000.

Cullen takes on new job in House of Commons TERRACE - SkeenaBulkley Valley NDP MP Nathan Cullen has been named as House leader for the official opposition in the House of Commons.

NDP opposition leader Tom Mulcair, in making the appointment, described Cullen as a “great debater.� “Nathan has shown a great capacity to involve people in the political process. His persuasiveness, his innovative thinking and his respect for others are his hallmarks,� Mulcair said.

Cullen, first elected in 2004 and then reelected in 2006, 2008 and in 2011, ran third in the March NDP leadership contest. That placement raised his national profile and put him on Mulcair’s short list for senior appointments.

Mulcair also named three MPs from different parts of the country as deputy leaders, helping to make the case that the NDP is a nationallybased party.

Mulcair himself is from Quebec and the party’s breakthrough there in the 2011 federal election propelled it into Official Opposition status with 103 seats in the House of Commons.

Cullen’s appointment comes with a salary bump, resulting in a pay packet of nearly $200,000 a year.

Cullen makes $157,731 as a Member of Parliament and will make an additional $39,179 as NDP House leader for a total of $196,910. Cullen said he was excited about the new position which he officially takes on this week. “There’s going to be a lot of strategy and a lot of negotiating with government,� said Cullen of the position.

As House leader, Cullen is the manager of his party’s affairs in the House of Commons.

He conceded that the position will require toughness as well as be-

ing tactful. “You want to stop the bad stuff from happening and you want to make Parliament work,�

Cullen added.

He’s already anticipating one of his first challenges – legislative changes the federal government wants to make to quicken the pace of environmental reviews of industrial projects.

The federal government is arguing that the current system in which there is no time limit and which involves a multitude of departments takes too long and is too bulky. “A review of assessments and how we do them to make them more efficient – that’s not a problem. But it’s not the point. It’s a totally different thing to make changes to approve any and all oil and gas projects without a public discussion taking place,� said Cullen. He said there has to be an expectation in a democracy that any and all voices are heard.

Seabridge Gold’s proposed KSM Project, located 65 kilometres northwest of Stewart, is a project with estimated capital costs of more than $4.5 billion and a projected mine life of 50-55 years. If approved, the KSM project could offer signi¿cant economic and social bene¿t to the Province and its residents.

But what does that really mean? Big picture, it’s important to remember the mining industry bene¿ts British Columbia’s economy in many ways. First, in the form of direct expenditures for goods and services, employment and tax revenues; but also indirectly, when mining companies buy goods and services from other providers, who in turn purchase inputs from other companies; or when people spend their wages on goods and services in local communities.

A PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) report commissioned in late 2011 by the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) estimated that, for every dollar spent in BC’s mining industry, there is about $1.73 of total impact on the provincial economy.

Direct mining expenditures in BC were about $5.2 billion in 2010, with an additional $3.7 billion spent in secondary and support industries and services. That’s $8.9 billion in total economic activity in BC as a result of mining.

“Mining plays an integral role in the provincial economy, contributing to the provincial labour market, government tax dollars and the quality of life in rural communities, through its support of healthcare initiatives, the arts and educationâ€? says Karina BriĂąo, president and CEO of MABC. “The sector remains a major driver of development and sustained economic activity throughout the province, where it offers employment, education and economic growth opportunities that may otherwise be difÂżcult to achieve and, in some cases, may not have existed.â€?

Ian Ricketts would know. For the past two years, the General Manager at Bulkley Valley Wholesale in Smithers has been supplying Seabridge’s KSM Project camps with groceries and other provisions during the Âżeld season. “A good part of our business comes from supporting the resource sector, and companies like Seabridge Gold. Every week, from May through September, we pull together orders for several mining and exploration companies running projects camps in the northwest region.

If approved, when the KSM

Project is under construction, it will generate direct spending of approximately $3.1 billion in the provincial economy for goods and services. At full production, the project will contribute about $365 million per year to the provincial GDP (direct, indirect, and induced) and $895 million per year for all of Canada. That adds up to an estimated $45 billion in total GDP for Canada over the life of the proposed project.

Through its exploration stage the KSM Project is contributing to the economy. Since acquiring a 100 percent stake in the project in 2006, Seabridge has spent $110 million in exploration drilling, engineering and environmental studies to advance the project through the Environmental Assessment process. The estimated budget for 2012 is $25 million and approximately 80 percent of spending to date has been in local communities across BC.

advantage of springtime weather for an exciting field trip earlier this month to explore fishing areas within traditional Gitga‚at territory, southeast of Prince Rupert.

The Applied Coastal Ecology (ACE) students had the opportunity to engage in some interesting field research to learn more about marine fish diversity in the area and the importance of varied habitat types.

To his knowledge, instructor Chris Picard says the area had never been explored in this way.

“I am not aware of any other fisheries work being completed at our study sites, so ours was likely the first look at fish diversity there.” said Picard, adding the group found a wide array of species using the eelgrass and beach habitats.

“This field trip gave the students an opportunity to become familiar with some of the biodiversity the North Coast has to offer,” Picard added. “The sites were heavily used by juvenile pink and chum salmon, as well as a variety of other interesting and unique species, such as pipefish and tubesnout˜both closely related to the more familiar seahorses in tropical seas. Numerous adult and juvenile flounder, along with several other species were also observed, suggesting the area is important for supporting fish biodiversity. Undoubtedly, had we more time, even more would have been learned and discovered.”

Picard says it took a team effort to pull off the trip successfully. The support of the Gitga‚at Guardians was paramount to the overall success of the project.

Crash sends woman to hospital

Hospital gets a lift…

TERRACE - A woman was injured after two vehicles collided at the corner of Keith Ave. and Kenney St. in Terrace April 23.

The crash involved a Ministry of Transportation vehicle in which two male passengers were uninjured, and a tan coloured Toyota car from which a woman was extracted by emergency crews using the jaws of life and other extraction devices, said spokesperson Const. Angela Rabut of Terrace

RCMP. The crash happened at roughly 1:30 p.m., she said, and the exact cause was still under investigation.

It was known that the truck was traveling northbound on Kenney St. and the car eastbound on Keith Ave. “She is stable,” said Rabut that day, adding that the woman was transported by ambulance to Mills Memorial Hospital for treat-

ment of her injuries.

Cpl. John Hughes of Terrace RCMP, who was on the scene, said the woman was alert and conscious at roughly 1:45 p.m.

The extent of her injuries were unknown, said Rabut.

After the collision, both vehicles were in the eastbound lane with the car pinned up on its side against a hydro pole on the northeast corner, the truck nearly parallel behind it.

Manuel José On April 16, Manuel José of Kitimat, BC, went to be with the Lord. He was 78.

He will be missed by his wife of 57 years, Maria José, as well as his children Maria de Fatima, Anna (Tom), Elizabeth, Celeste (Peter), Eduarda (John), and Manuel (Kathy).

Also left to mourn are his grandchildren Eleanorr (Joey), Ruth, Lydia (Chris), Emily (Anthony), Karla (Russell), Kristina, Christopher (Alexis), Thomas, Christina (Kelly), Edward, Andrea and Matthew, and his great grandchildren Reuben, Jonah, Deklen, Emma-Lee, and Zachary.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Simon, who died suddenly as a result of diabetic complications. Simon was born November 9, 1986 in Prince George, British Columbia. He is the son of Derry and Hazel, and a brother to Steven, Candace, and Jason. Simon is also survived by sister-in-law Michelle, brother-in-law Ryan, and niece Kiara, grandparents George and Florence Bott and Bill Fox. Simon was pre-deceased by his grandmother, Viola Fox. He has numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Simon completed high school and graduated from Charles Hays Secondary School in 2004. Simon went on to attend North West Community college in Terrace to start an apprenticeship program in carpentry which he Ànished in December 2010 receiving his Red Seal.

He was a son who cherished spending time with family and friends and put others feelings ahead of his own and brought humor and caring to the lives of many others. He will be missed by customers and staff at the Highliner Inn and Good Times Games.

Simon expressed his imagination and creativity in drawings, painting Àgurines and even creating his own language. He wanted everyone to accept others as they were, to understand that differences in character or conduct are not cause for condemnation. He lived the phrase “treat others as you would have them treat you”.

We wish to thank everyone who has surrounded our family with love and support.

William (Bill) Peter Benzer February 20, 1933 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; April 13, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden, but peaceful passing of our dear Dad. Bill was born & raised in Kelowna.

He met Sybil there in 1951 & they were married in Vancouver in 1958. They moved to Terrace from Vancouver in 1963 to continue his trade as a Dental Technician. He opened Terrace Dental Lab & continued to â&#x20AC;&#x153;go to the ofďŹ ceâ&#x20AC;? for the rest of his life. He volunteered as a ďŹ reďŹ ghter from 19641991 & worked as a paid staff of the Terrace Fire Department from June 1969 until he retired in June 1988. He also tended ambulance & participated in ďŹ rst aid competitions during that time. Being part of the ďŹ re hall community meant so much to him, he really enjoyed everything about it & all the friends he made.

Early years in Terrace were spent camping, ďŹ shing, gardening, exploring back roads hunting grouse & other typical Terrace adventures. He was a proud Dad & all of his life he was active in our lives, supporting our activities & he was welcoming to all of our friends. After they retired, he & Sybil did some travelling which they both enjoyed very much. On the list was a cruise of the Panama Canal, which was a dream of Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. He was also a proud â&#x20AC;&#x153;Terraceiteâ&#x20AC;? & volunteered much of his time: coaching hockey, driving, delivering meals on wheels, volunteer bureau, music festival, playing Santa (with big eyebrows), etc. He enjoyed square dancing, curling, playing cards/ crib, word puzzles & keno.

He is survived by his beloved wife Sybil, his Brother in Law Ted & Cathy Rabone of Surrey, Brothers: Joe Benzer of Merritt, Ernie & Kaye Benzer of Kelowna, Art & Gail Benzer of Montrose, his much loved Children: Carla & Don McColl, Nancy & Ron Ross, Russell & Beth Benzer & his cherished Grandchildren: Andrew, Kenny (& Lenay) & Eric McColl, Brianna (& Tiger), Nadia & Marlee Benzer. He also has 11 nieces/nephews & their families who were very dear to him. He was always SO proud of his Grandkids & spent many years following all of their activities.

His door was open to all visitors, any age, neighbours, friends, anyone. He always had a cheerful â&#x20AC;&#x153;hi-yaâ&#x20AC;? greeting for everyone. He loved being happy & having fun & seeing others having fun meant everything to him. He had a really great sense of humour, even on a crabby day you could make him laugh.

To honour & respect his wishes, no service will be held. A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Please feel free to celebrate his life how you wish, he would really like that, & so would we. He was blessed with so many great friends & he very much valued & treasured ALL of them. There are many, many happy memories. We would like to sincerely thank all of his friends & our family & friends & co workers & those in the community who have helped & supported us through this difďŹ cult time, we are truly humbled & appreciative. He was loved, & we are comforted in knowing that, Thank you. We know he will be greatly missed & fondly remembered by so many.

Haisla women score basketball tournament win

KITIMAT - The adage that the word ‘team’ stands for ‘Together Each Achieves More’ proved true for the Haisla Senior Women basketball team, who came in first in the ladies division at the Cultural Warming Kitimat/Kitamaat Basketball Tournament.

Team Captain Deanna Smith credited a spike in experience for the team over the past month which has seen them participate in four tournaments.

That experience was crucial for the women to rank where they did.

“This past weekend was our fourth tournament in a row,” said Smith. Their last tournament was in Kamloops, where they placed in second place.

Winning in a tournament down south was a big achievement for the team.

In fact they were able to defeat Nanaimo in that tournament, the same team the women lost to at the All Native Tournament in Prince Rupert.

Smith said that the Cultural Warming started a little rocky when they lost their first game by just a few points.

But their teamwork pulled together in time for a first place win.

Their skill on the court dampened the Prince Rupert Rain in the final, by 16 points.

She said this last tournament was “the end result of all the tournaments we’ve gone to because you could tell the difference between our team and the team we played in the final.”

The Haisla Braves Senior Men team came within grasp of the coveted first place spot but settled for second against Prince Rupert Lights Out. Quinton Nyce, named as one of the tournament All Stars, said they put up a good fight in the final game and considers the tournament a success.

“We crawled our way back having a chance to win the game,” he wrote to the Sentinel. “We still forced [overtime] where we simply fell short.”

He said that the tournament brought in a good number of teams.

“We were the team the local community wanted to see win this tournament,” he said.

“And we wanted to make that happen, seeing how that was our first time making the finals since the tournament

He said the team’s first real tough match was against Prince Rupert in the semi-final and had to fight against a 15 point trail with five minutes on the clock but the Haisla men managed to come out ahead by two points.

In the final he said

Prince Rupert did well by playing the first half more efficiently even though the Haisla had a one point lead at the half’s close.

“We played tough,” he said.

In the Men’s Division, Prince Rupert Lights Out placed first, followed by Haisla

Braves Senior Men, Rupert Ballerz, Kitkatla Warriors, Fort St. James Wolves, Haisla Two and Kispiox Bullets.

All Stars were Quinton Nyce for Haisla Braves, Andrew Nyce for Terrace Waks, Justin Adams with Lights Out, Morgan Grant for Haisla Braves, Aj Adusei for Rupet

Ballerz and Most Valuable Player was Darcy Pearson with Lights Out. In the Ladies Division, the Haisla Senior Women placed first followed by Prince Rupert Rain, Prince Rupert Thunder, Hartley Bay, Canyon Wildcats and Gingolx Ladies.

All Stars were Miranda Ross with Haisla Women, Kristen Helin with Prince Rupert Rain, Kaitlyn Smart with the Rain, Denise Wilson with the Prince Rupert Thunder and Megan Metz with Hartley Bay. Most Valuable Player was Yvonne Campbell with the Haisla Women.

Bluebacks swim to second, Terrace swimmer excels

TERRACE - The Terrace Bluebacks came to a second place finish at the Prince George Moose Meet, April 13-15.

The swimmers competed as a part of Points North, a regional team with athletes from Terrace, Smithers, Kitimat and Prince Rupert.

Coach for the Bluebacks, Nesia Bare said training for the meet was a little difficult as Terrace swimmers transitioned from swimming in their 25-metre pool, to swimming in a 50-metre pool in Prince George.

Points North swimmers combined managed to improve their swim times 70 per cent overall.

From Terrace, Emma Hodgkinson, Thomas Christensen and Brayden Phillips all managed to best previous times on every swim event they entered.

Phillips also won a silver medal in the 200-metre individual medley

and bronze in the 200-metre freestyle swim, both in the 10 and under boy’s divisions.

“It feels really good,” Phillips said of his results. “I feel proud of myself.”

Additionally, nine-year-old Phillips scored an AA time in the 100-metre breaststroke for 11-yearolds, which qualified him to swim at provincials against swimmers two years older.

“It takes a talented kid to get that,” said Bare. “Brayden is a great swimmer, and just wants to improve on his swim times.”

Bare explained that in practices Phillips is always asking to be timed, in a constant effort to better himself.

He will push himself until he achieves his goal, she said.

In his third year with the Terrace Bluebacks, Phillips plans to continue swimming for as long as he can.

He said what he likes about the sport is the fact that it is hard, fun and good exercise.
