Production postponed The Sidekick Players Club has had to postpone its production of The Affections of May by Norm Foster due to "unfortunate and unforeseeable circumstances."

Ground broken on new animal shelter $4.3 million project long overdue, says Delta Mayor Lois Jackson PHILIP RAPHAEL EDITOR

There were some wagging tails of joy Tuesday afternoon (April 24) as ground was officially broken on the project to build a new, much larger Delta Community Animal Shelter.

Located in the Tilbury industrial area, not far from the current site, the new building will have about four times as more room—about 12,000-square-feet—to house animals.

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, who brought along her dog Maggie—a six-year-old

Springer Spaniel—to help celebrate the project’s kick off, said it was high time the old, cinder block shelter was replaced.

It will be torn down to make way for a portion of the South Delta Perimeter Road.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Jackson said. “The old shelter was very, very tired and totally inadequate for not only the animals, but the people who worked there.”

Over the years three portable buildings helped house some of the smaller animals such as rabbits and cats.

The new building will have dedicated rooms for that.

It will also have isolation rooms with their own separate ventilation systems to help prevent the spread of any infectious conditions that can wreak havoc on animal shelters.

Hugh Davies, Delta’s manager of bylaws and compliance said some shelters in the Lower Mainland have had to shut their doors to disinfect the premises when illnesses were passed along to other shelter occupants.

Situated near the South Arm of the Fraser River, the new shelter is within walking distance of trails so volunteers can take dogs for lengthier

strolls.

›INBRIEF Council talks waterfront

On Monday night (April 23) Delta council gave first and second readings to a bylaw intended to facilitate the revitalization of the Downtown Ladner Waterfront.

Among other things, the proposed community plan amendments would allow for more uses in the area including pedestrian-oriented retail, commercial, recreation and public use, with office and residential uses above the first storey.

The changes will be referred to a public hearing after consultation with various advisory committees and community groups. Mayor Lois Jackson has asked the Downtown Ladner Waterfront Redevelopment Advisory Committee to look at developing a building that captures the essence of Ladner heritage.

elta School District officials will examine if they need to add homophobia to their anti-bullying policy after an impassioned presentation from a pair of South Delta Secondary school students.

Grade 12 student Maddy Van Beek, and Grade 10 student Rachel Garrett addressed school trustees and staff at a district meeting Tuesday evening (April 24) telling them they need to look at the situation which they believe fails to address the needs of many students who are not only treated poorly by their peers for their sexual orientation, but are often too frightened to talk to anyone about it, even their parents.

In their presentation the pair said homophobia is frequently, "a less obvious form of bullying," that is swept under the rug.

"Youth who are struggling with their gender and sexuality are not proficiently supported by their peers or families," said Van Beek who along with Garrett run their school's Gay Straight Alliance Club. "Many

The lack of including homophobia in the district's anti-bullying policy detracts from its stated core values, said Garrett, adding, "But you can help us change that."

The pair stated that homophobia is much more than bullying—it is an attitude.

"Society places taboos upon us and demoralizes those who are already struggling with who they are," Van Beek said.

What they would like to see is a specific, focused policy to deal with the issue in Delta schools.

Garrett said she suggested the district

pass a motion to establish an advisory committee to draft a sexual orientation and gender identity policy.

She added that a host of other school districts are moving forward on the issue in their jurisdictions, "and we should, too."

Dianne Turner, Delta's Superintendent of School said to get the process moving here she would be inviting representatives from each of Delta's school-based gay and straight alliance clubs to meet and discuss the issues.

"I'd like to bring everybody together to meet with some senior staff members and teachers," she said. "We have a policy development process in the district that really begins with truly understanding the need for the policy."

Trustee Simon Truelove said he felt all forms of bullying are a huge problem.

"And it hurts me when we look at our bold vision and you're (students) coming to us and saying, well, you're not really following in the case of homophobia that vision. And that's serious, and we really have to take that on." editor@southdeltaleader.com

Players and officials with the South Delta Minor Hockey Association were celebrating more than just another successful season on the ice Tuesday (April 24). They were all smiles at Ladner Arena after Esso awarded them $10,000 as part of the company's Esso Medals of Achievement 30th Anniversary Contest.

Rob Speirs, Esso's Senior Territory Manager, congratulated the association for its application for the award that recognizes young players who contribute to the game of hockey through dedication, effort and fair play.

Sean Johnson, V.P. C Hockey Atom/Peewee for the association said there have been no specific areas where the money will be spent.

"Ten thousand dollars is a very generous amount of money and would definitely benefit the association," Johnson said, adding the group's executive has looked at some ideas that include increased development opportunities for existing and new players to join the sport.

Youth in the spotlight Annual showcase celebrates achievements in a variety of areas After four years of highlighting achievements of those South Deltans under 30 one thing remains clear.

There is no shortage of young people doing some incredible things in this community.

They are committed to causes, their schools, their sports, their hobbies, their crafts and the people they care for.

They go the extra mile in all they do, not for selfish reasons, but to make their influence a positive one for all to enjoy.

So, congratulations to those who have been selected for the South Delta Leader's

30 Under 30 edition for 2012. You more than deserve to be recognized for what you do.

But as always, this is not a conclusive list. We have likely missed others who need equal billing. If so, I encourage you to let us know and we can tell their story. Just drop us a note, email, phone call, or nominate them for next year's group.

She plans to attend UBC in the fall and study sciences.

After attending a youth empowerment event a few years ago, Julia Badayeva was inspired to start making a positive difference at her school.

The event in question was Free the Children’s We Day, which is held in cities across Canada and motivates young people to take action on local and global issues.

“I realized why it’s important to get involved with the school and to raise school spirit and make sure kids are having fun at school and to make school a better place for other kids,” said Badayeva, a Grade 12 student at South Delta Secondary.

She is co-chair of her school’s We Day team, helps out with student council, and is also a Green Team leader. The 15-member Green Team, which comprises all grades, hopes to teach other students about the importance of being environmentally

Owen Best, 15, Actor It’s not every day that a young actor gets to portray a literary icon.

But that’s exactly what Ladner actor Owen Best did in a made-for-TV production that aired in February this year.

Best played the role of a young Stephen Leacock in the CBC production of Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town.

While he’s no stranger to the business—Best has a list of credits that include roles in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Tron: Legacy—this was the first time he had the opportunity to do some research on a real life figure who was one of Canada’s most beloved humourists.

“I’ve never really had a role like that where it’s serious, but has comedy at the same time,” Best said just prior to the airing of the TV feature. “Plus, this was my first big role being the lead, so it was a bit difficult, at first. But I had some great acting coaches and they helped me through it. And of course I also had some great influences on set.”

some advice and encouragement were veteran performer Gordon Pinsent and Jill Hennessy who is known for her roles in TV’s Crossing Jordan and Law and Order.

Best was inspired to get into the business when at age four he saw one of his cousins in a TV commercial.

His first big role was in a 2008 TV miniseries called Impact which was filmed on Vancouver Island. It was a sci-fi tale about a shower of asteroids colliding with the Earth and starred David James Elliott ( JAG) and former model turned actress Natasha Henstridge.

Ladner teen Alec Morgana turned the gift of an Apple iPod Touch into a career path after designing a bunch of applications for Apple's App Store.

Alec Morgana explores the high-tech world of developing apps for Apple users

C

areer paths—sometimes you stumble across them.

Other times they are a result of extensive research, trial and error.

For Ladner's Alec Morgana, 17, his came "gift-wrapped."

That's not to say the enterprising, Grade 12 student at Vancouver College has breezed through the choices available to him. He's done plenty of the heavy lifting to get himself to where he is with his own small, high-tech company that develops applications for smart phones and computer tablets.

It's just that his interest in producing them was sparked by the gift of an Apple iPod Touch a few years ago.

"I discovered the App Store when I got an iPod about four or five years ago, and I decided I wanted to try and make some apps," Morgana says in a straight forward, matter of fact manner.

With that goal clearly in mind he raised about $1,000 by various means including a garage sale to buy a computer to do the required programming.

The result?

Over the last four years Morgana has turned out 15 apps. He estimates that in total his apps—both free and paid ones—have been downloaded 400,000 times.

"They've done quite well. And I've made a few websites, and in doing so made (business) connections across the U.S. and Canada. It's been quite a lot of work," says Morgana modestly, who was born with a congenital heart condition that has required three open heart surgeries over the years.

"I had two, one when I was a week old or so, another when I was two, then the third in the summer after Grade 9," he says.

But that clearly hasn't slowed him down from delving into to the world of app programming. Most of those he's designed to date are of the joke and novelty variety.

"There's lots of that sort of stuff on the App Store, but what I've done recently is trying to get more professional and contract out a lot of the work, paying other people who are better at programming to make more advanced apps."

Right now, that includes working on a brain teaser game.

So, what motivated a then 13-yearold to get into the emerging world of developing applications?

"I saw all these stories of people quitting their jobs and making money on the App Store," he said. "I thought that was really interesting. I was also taking a computer class at school that taught me some basic HTML programming. I really liked that. I thought it was cool to be able to talk to a computer and see results."

Then he discovered more Apple computer specific development programs, gave it a try, and the rest is recent history.

For the future, Morgana is planning to enrol in business courses at either BCIT or Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

His overall goal is to gain the skills to earnestly launch his own business.

"What I have now is not all that official," he says, adding he's had to run the enterprise through his father since you have to be 18 to officially be an app vendor.

"I'm turning 18 in about three months and then this summer maybe form a proper corporation."

Jack Creighton, 12, Web designer Jack Creighton first started to show an interest in web design when he was only in Grade 2.

So, when the Grade 7 Neilson Grove Elementary School student got the opportunity last year to create a website for the Delta branch of the Stroke Recovery Association of B.C. he jumped right on it.

Branch co-ordinator Dawn Sillett, who is also Creighton's grandmother, provided him with a thick binder full of photographs, monthly newsletters and information, which he successfully pared down into a readable webpage using Adobe Flash.

"I've gotten some feedback from my grandma and she said that it's helping quite a bit," Creighton says of the site (www.strokerecoverydelta.com).

One roadblock to the website's success is the fact that many of the stroke survivors who benefit from the association's services do not know how to use a computer.

Megan Dalke, 18, Model It's not every day a small-town girl gets a shot at the big leagues, but that's exactly what happened to Megan Dalke.

The Tsawwassen teen had only graduated from South Delta Secondary a few months prior when, with zero previous modelling experience, she went to the Faces West modelling convention in Vancouver last fall.

A Vancouver Fashion Week producer offered her one of 20 open slots on the runway. She ended up performing 30 shows throughout Vancouver Fashion Week.

Jyla Davis, 28, Dance instructor After travelling and performing in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, professional dancer Jyla Davis is now focused on fostering young talent in her hometown.

Davis is the owner and director at Ladner's Studio West Dance, which she bought three years ago.

"It's just boomed. It's absolutely been a huge success," she says.

She is also the main instructor at Delta Secondary School's Dance Academy—currently in its inaugural year— where high school students receive professional training in technique, choreography and performance.

Davis started her own dance training at around five years old, became competitive in her youth and won scholarships to continue her training in New York, L.A. and Toronto. The

how-to session for local stroke survivors and their caregivers last summer.

"I showed them how to find the website, how to boot up the computer, how to make sure the mouse was Christine Lyon photo on," he says.

"Computers are definitely fairly easy for me to understand," he says. "I've used them a lot, so I'm fairly familiar with them."

Currently, Creighton is focused on maintaining the website, but says he'd love to learn more about computers in the future.

York City to meet with industry bigwigs from Wilhelmina Models. Dalke previously told the Leader she had planned to study business after high school, but she put those plans on hold for now.

"You have a window and this doesn't happen to very many people," Dalke says. "If I pursue modelling and I'm successful at it, then I can pay for myself to go to school, which would be even better."

She had expected to return to New York in January and had a trip booked in March for Paris Fashion Week.

"This is an amazing opportunity and a possible career, so I'm taking it very seriously and I'm going to work as hard as I possibly can."

Her musical theatre credits include Peter Pan, Cats and Thoroughly Modern Millie, to name a few. She was an actor in Nickelodeon's TV movie Spectacular! and she danced for Avril Lavigne in the 2006 Olympic closing ceremonies in Torino, Italy. Davis was also performance director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.

"And now I'm back in my hometown and I want to just give back to the community," she says.

Davis strives to offer her students the highest-quality training so they can decide if dance is something they want to pursue professionally and, if that's the case, they will have the skills to do so.

A cut above

Young chef expands catering business to offer a change from 'factory food' Wes Levesque is a man of many talents.

Not only can he slice a pineapple in half in mid-air, he can also cook and run a successful business.

In January, the 26-year-old chef took over operations of KinVillage Café at Tsawwassen's KinVillage Community Centre.

"But I've just started a catering c o m p a n y n ow called Urban Village Catering, so I'm growing that," he says.

Levesque is in the process of selling his former eatery, the Hilltop Café on English Bluff Road, because he decided he needed more space if he was going to expand his catering business.

"My facilities were too small for the size I was growing so I had to grow into bigger facilities," he says, explaining he now has 10 times the working space at KinVillage.

Levesque does a lot of catering at the community centre banquet hall, which hosts a variety of functions and can seat up to 300 people. He is also trying to build the commercial side of his business and make more of his food available for sale at local cafes, coffee shops and gas stations.

He says Urban Village Catering is unique because there are not many commercial caterers out there producing quality, home-cooked meals.

"A lot of it is more factory food," he explains.

Levesque knew since he was fiveyears-old he wanted to be a chef.

Largely self taught, he is thrilled to be able to combine his love of cooking with his natural business talent.

"Entrepreneurship kind of runs in the family, and the cooking I think I got from my grandma," he says.

This week Levesque shares his recipe for fresh pineapple salsa. It tastes great on blackened chicken or fish, he says, and can be used as a refreshing accompaniment to any barbecue feast.

Fresh pineapple salsa INGREDIENTS 1 ripe golden pineapple 1 lime 2 fresh jalapeños, de-seeded 1/2 red onion

1 garlic clove 1/2 bunch of cilantro 1 tbsp agave nectar Pinch of salt and pepper

DIRECTIONS Start out by trimming your pineapple, making sure to discard the core as well.

Dice the pineapple to desired size and set aside in bowl.

Finely dice the red onion and jalapenos and add to pineapple. Next, mince the garlic and cilantro and add to other

ingredients.

Squeeze the juice of one lime, add the agave, and sprinkle salt and pepper to taste to remaining ingredients and stir well.

For best flavour, let the salsa sit in the fridge for 1 1/2 hours before serving.

LETTERS 'People movers' needed There’s no doubt a solution is needed to deal with daily congestion occurring at the George Massey tunnel, especially as more and more motorists are commuting from south of the Fraser. The current congestion will be compounded further by the mega developments that will take place on TFN and elsewhere as agricultural land is sacrificed for industrial development.

Extra buses and new bicycle lanes, though nice, do not accommodate enough people to solve the problem of congestion at the tunnel. Recall that during the recent TAP (Tsawwassen Area Plan) hearings we learned that some 8,000 residents leave this area by car on a daily basis. An environmentally friendly concept was proposed some time ago by Malcolm Johnston, an advocate for light rail. One has only to look at the BART in San Francisco to see how efficient a people moving system can be—especially a system that prevents total dependence on automobiles and freeways.

The folks who developed the BART made plans long before heavy congestion took place.

They had a vision and were willing to spend the time making this vision become reality.

A new electrified South of the Fraser passenger rail system could carry commuters all the way from Langley to Bridgeport Canada Line station. A new transit tunnel beneath the Fraser River built with modern tunnel boring machine technology would cause an absolute minimum of

farmland loss, and almost no disruption of surface traffic.

This cost should be borne by all taxpayers (including businesses) but only after all has been done to stop waste within TransLink.

It was even suggested that solutions to getting around needed to be found before more housing development was considered. Surely it is time that regional and provincial governments develop a vision for the future transportation needs of taxpayers and commuters, not just for big business, for industry and for Port Metro Vancouver.

in North America to protect our future ability to produce food and protect a natural resource.

There is no monetary value that can be put on Delta’s farmland; it is priceless and must be preserved.

The BCTF's big gamble B.C. teachers are taking a big gamble by pulling out of sports and other extracurricular activities.

While the intended target of their campaign is the provincial government— which they want to withdraw Bill 22, the document enforcing mediation and new class size and composition rules—what teachers are more likely to experience is strained relationships and a drop in public support.

Teachers, who have enjoyed strong parent support in their last two contract disputes, say they must take this action because the legal right to strike has been taken away from them. But few students and parents in the weeks ahead will be able to equate the loss or complication of planned school activities with larger issues the teachers seek to address.

If they wish to keep the public on their side, B.C. teachers will need a deft communications strategy to explain why collective bargaining principles are more important than an end-of-year field trip or tournament—or grad.

What’s more, many, if not all, of these events will go ahead anyway, especially in the wealthier neighbourhoods, leaving teachers with less clout and fewer relationships on which to build strong bonds. With parents and other members of the community picking up the slack, teachers will be left out of the loop and out of the action; their students will go on with their lives, winning ribbons and scholarships and other acknowledgements without the teachers who helped them earn these achievements.

And for those students who struggle, there will be another reason to disengage when their favourite coach, choir or other sponsoring teacher stops giving their free time for political reasons or because they fear reprisals from their co-workers.

All this heartache would be worth it if there was some tangible pay-off in the end.

But the public education system has never been perfect and teachers will be hardpressed to explain how punishing kids is punishing the government.

Cory Duhaime, 23, Athlete Talk about versatility—Tsawwassen’s Cory Duhaime is a competitor, whether he’s on the steep snowy slopes, or the confines of a bowling alley.

It’s his ability to excel at a pair of very different sports—downhill skiing and five-pin bowling—which has earned the 23-year-old Special Olympics athlete the distinction of being a two-sport medal winner in both the winter and summer games.

This past March Duhaime managed to make good on his promise for podium finishes in three alpine events—the Super G, slalom and giant slalom at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games.

He came home from St. Albert, Alberta with a trio of bronze medals that have a place of honour in his room.

So does the pair of gold medals he earned from fivepin bowling at the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in London, Ontario.

The skiing medals were the result of months of intense training on the hills of the North Shore and Whistler.

Scott Foran and Barry Hartman, 25 and 24, Entrepreneurs It’s been a busy 11 months or so for Tsawwassen’s Scott Foran, 25, and Barry Hartman, 24.

The duo—former grads at South Delta Secondary—started their own rubbish removal firm called 505-JUNK in May 2011 and have enjoyed watching how their unique concept in an industry with plenty of competition has grown beyond their expectations.

Since getting things off the ground they estimate their first revenues have exceeded projections by 68 per cent.

The reason?

In part it’s their concept to charge clients by weight of material removed rather than strictly by volume, and second, they recycle as much of the waste as they can, and donate any usable goods to charity.

To date, the pair, who met at Kwantlen Polytechnic University while developing a Victoria’s Secret marketing plan for a marketing management class, have recycled more than 150,000 pounds of waste.

That kind of performance attracted some notice

In a sport where being large can sometimes play a significant role along the pathway to success, Tsawwassen’s Brendan Gallagher has proved to be an exception.

The diminutive forward—who was listed as five-foot-eight inches tall and 178 Contributed photo pounds—has risen to great heights during his major junior ice hockey career with the Ladnerbased Vancouver Giants, and he has proven to be among the top prospects at the NHL level.

During his time with the Giants, Gallagher became the WHL club’s all-time leading scorer with a total of 203 points (91 goals, 108 assists) in 190 games. In his final season that concluded this spring, he racked up 77 points (41 goals, 35 assists).

It was those kinds of numbers which drew the interest of pro scouts ahead of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft when the storied Montreal Candiens made him the club’s fifth round pick (147th overall). Last November he signed an entry level contract with the team.

While he did not make the leap to the “Habs” this past season, he was part of Canada’s team at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Edmonton and Calgary over the Christmas holidays.

Monica Houweling has been living in sunny California since January, dividing her time between the barn and her family's greenhouse.

The Ladner native is a competitive dressage rider and has been training full time with her two horses, StenChristine Lyon photo tano and Rifradin.

“It’s going really well.

There’s a lot more shows here that can qualify me for things,” Houweling says.

Houweling graduated from Richmond Christian School in 2011 and decided to take some time off to focus on dressage.

“There’s such great opportunity until I’m 21,” she says, explaining the Young Riders age cutoff is 21, at which point she would have to compete against the professionals.

Houweling has already racked up quite a few titles to her name and recently qualified to compete in the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in Kentucky this July. At last year’s event, she snagged silver in the freestyle round and bronze in the individual test.

She also has her eye on the Young Rider World Cup in Germany in December. Only one Canadian rider will qualify for a spot.

Last summer, longdistance runner Stacey Kohler became the first athlete from the Delta branch of Special Olympics B.C. to ever compete at a world games.

And she didn’t come back empty handed. At the Special Olympics World Summer Games Contributed photo held in Athens, Greece, Kohler won a bronze medal in the 3,000-metre race. She also competed in the 1,500 metres, coming in sixth place.“Being the first athlete from Delta to go to worlds, to represent Delta, was certainly an honour,” says her mother Beryl. “Just being there (in Athens) and meeting all those new people and being able to participate was just incredible.”

A South Surrey resident, Kohler has been with the Delta chapter of Special Olympics B.C. since its inception and has built a strong rapport with her coaches and fellow athletes.

She has competed in two Special Olympics provincial games, and went to her first national games in London, Ontario in 2010 where she won three gold medals (and three personal best times).

With a lengthy list of extracurricular activities on her plate, it's a wonder that Grade 10 Southpointe Academy student Morgan Leung manages to maintain her Honour Roll academic standing year after year.

The 15-year-old sits on student council, she Christine Lyon photo volunteers every Saturday as a teacher's aide at Free Flight Dance studio in Ladner, and she remains the top student fundraiser in both B.C. and the Yukon for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

This year Leung led a successful fundraising campaign entitled Bracelets for Baby Food. Through the sale of handmade woven bracelets, she raised enough money to purchase 1,223 jars of baby food which she donated to the South Delta Food Bank. She far exceeded her original goal of 150 jars as well as her more ambitious goal of 1,000 jars.

Asked why she gets involved with so many different causes, Leung says, "I really like seeing that ripple effect happen, where one person does something really good and then it just spreads all over."

Ladner's Tim Low enjoys the "lightbulb" moment.

That's when one of the students he tutors grasps the concept he is presenting to them.

It's something the 21-year-old, thirdyear UBC science student has been doing since he was in Grade Philip Raphael photo 10 at Delta Secondary.

That's where he would often snag empty classroom space, get the books out— mostly dealing with mathematics—and get to work doling out his own brand of extra help for free.

"I've been helping my classmates out for as long as I can remember," says Low who has medical school on his list of future academic pursuits.

Low expanded on his enjoyment of working with people when he became a math tutor with Kumon Learning Centre, first in Ladner, and currently at the Kerrisdale location.

Low says he enjoys looking at the material being studied to find ways to tailor his teaching to the student.

And when that "light bulb" gets lit, how does it make him feel?

"It makes me feel good that I've actually accomplished my goal."

Soccer's loss is field hockey's gain.

That about sums up the story of Tsawwassen's Sara McManus, who at the tender age of 18 has already earned 24 senior caps for Canada's Women's field hockey team.

McManus made the switch from using her Contributed photo feet to picking up a stick to control a ball when she was 10. It was a bit of peer pressure that made her curious about the game which the Delta Falcons club calls "the fastest game on turf."

While her athletic nature made her try a number of other sports, McManus soon realized she was developing quicker with field hockey than the rest. And that caught the eye of national team coaches who started to push her up the ladder and into the senior women's team at age 16.

"It was pretty young, especially for me since I am a defender. Usually, there are a lot more experienced players back there," McManus told the South Delta Leader just prior to heading off to New Delhi, India in February to compete in a 2012 Summer Olympic qualifying tournament.

Unfortunately, Canada did not make it through the tough field for a spot in London.

Kenzie Peters can't remember exactly when the singing started. But it seems as if it has never stopped.

The Grade 12 student at South Delta Secondary has been a regular in the school's musicals—she most recently played the lead role of Maria in Rob Newell photo The Sound of Music.

And she was one of the winners in the Delta School District's Voice Your Vision contest which invited students from across the district to develop a presentation in various forms that expressed how they believe the new District ‘vision’ is, or can, come alive in their schools.

Peters has spent the last two years as a member of the school's Film Acting Academy and says she has enjoyed all aspects of the program, especially the chance to perform.

"There hasn't been a day where I haven't imagined myself being a performer for the rest of my life," she said.

That love of expressing herself clearly shone through for those judging the Voice Your Vision contest for which Peters entered an original song called Blinders.

For her efforts, Peters was awarded one semester of tuition at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

While Ladner's Devon Richards is learning about the business world, he's also taking on the added responsibility of knowing what it requires to be a leader.

The 27-year-old student at Kwantlen Polytechnic Univer- Christine Lyon photo sity says he decided to play a role at his school pretty much the first day he spent on the campus.

He joined the group's planning committee for the the next year's conference and became dedicated to marketing and promotional efforts for it. For that Richards was asked if he'd take on the role of student co-chair for the planning committee. And from there he's been committed to contribute.

Why? "A number of things," says the former grad of Delta Secondary school. "For one, I really recognized the benefits after being someone who was on the receiving end. And because of the way my experiences went I could really see the value and importance and felt it was something that needs to be continued and to find new people to carry the torch."

Recently Richards was awarded a KPU “Contribution to Student Life Award” in the amount of $1,000.

Logan Schuss, 22, Field lacrosse player Sometimes making the step up from high school to university can be a steep challenge.

Not so for Ladner's Logan Schuss, a standout lacrosse player who has made a big impact at The Ohio State University team during the past two seasons with the Buckeyes. Schuss, 22, who came up through the ranks with the Delta Islanders organization, has set a series of notable achievements in his time in Ohio.

In 2010, his freshman year, he scored a team high 31 goals and 25 assists in 15 games— which earned him a rookie of the year award.

He followed that up in 2011 with 52 points (32 goals, 20 assists) to again lead all players in scoring. His two-season totals put him 24th on all-time Buckeye scoring.

Keddi-Anne Sherbino, 21, Long-distance runner Naturally talented.

Look up the definition of the term and you could expect to see an image of former Tsawwassen resident Keddi-Anne Sherbino crossing the finish line, arms upraised in victory.

That was the scene last May as the 21-year-old former South Delta Secondary grad, who now goes to university in the Okanagan, took top spot for women in the 2011 BMO Vancouver Marathon. It was the novice runner's second marathon. And her time of two hours and 43 minutes and 40 seconds over the 42 km distance was just under 10 minutes faster than her only other previous marathon competition in October 2010 in Kelowna where she also crossed the finish line first.

Sherbino knows she has potentially many years to improve her performances and maybe even represent Canada at Olympic Games somewhere down the road.

But in order to do that some experienced coaching is in the cards as Sherbino learns more a about her ability and how far it could carry her.

Rob and Rich Simpson, 22, Musicians After appearing on the CBC reality show Cover Me Canada last fall, identical twins Rob and Rich Simpson have returned to their studies at UBC and continue to make music with their band.

"It's been interesting getting back into the swing of things with school after an eightmonth layoff," says Rich, who is majoring in English literature while his brother Rob majors in psychology.

The twins, who graduated from South Delta Secondary School, were narrowed down from thousands of applicants to land a spot on Cover Me Canada, which saw eight emerging musical acts perform hit Canadian songs on national TV in an effort to win prize money and a recording contract.

Christopher Summers, 25, Political organizer When Tsawwassen's Christopher Summers was a youngster he had dreams of becoming a political figure—a provincial premier, or even prime minister.

While he hasn't quite reached that level yet, the 25-year-old South Delta Secondary grad is well on the way in the organizational aspect of politics as the riding association president of the BC Conservative Party in Delta-South. And at the end of March he was voted in as regional director of the party in Delta and Richmond and got a seat on the party's board of directors.

"There's been some great people who have helped me along the way," said Summers who earned a degree in political science at UVIC. Summers said now, just over a year before the next scheduled provincial election, is an exciting time for the BC Conservatives to show themselves to more voters across the province. The South Delta Leader felt it was time to put Cathie Gordon into the spotlight with a fab makeover!

Gordon says she learned a lot from the shopping experience. "Now I can use that and go and look at things that aren't just the same old, same old," she says.

On makeover day Gordon was treated to a manicure, pedicure and make-up application at Tsawwassen's Spa Vilamoura.

And later that day, Gordon walked out of neighbouring Myne2 Hair Spa with a shorter 'do featuring subtle blonde highlights.

On hand to witness the big "reveal" was Gordon's mother and makeover nominator Dorothy Taylor, who felt her daughter needed some special treatment after a 40-year teaching career.

"It has been a lifetime work choice that she has enjoyed every day of her teaching career," Taylor wrote in her nomination letter. "Now she has a little time to herself and I think she deserves a little pampering."

Overall, Gordon felt happy, comfortable and liked the idea that she could wear her versatile new outfit to a variety of occasions.

When Tsawwassen resident Cathie Gordon was nominated for the South Delta Leader's Be Fabulous makeover, she jumped at the chance to try out a new look.

"I kind of tend to dress in the same outfits always," says the recently retired Cliff Drive Elementary School teacher. "I never change."

Be Fab stylist Michelle Sullivan helped Gordon branch out of her comfort zone and try some colours and cuts she never knew she could wear. After several trips to the fitting room, they settled on a rose-hued summery ensemble from Ladner's South Coast Casuals.

"Cathie looked stunning in so many different looks, we had to narrow it down," says Sullivan. "We went with her final look based on the fact that she felt beautiful, the colours were really outside the box for her, and she still felt comfortable.

Gillian Thiel, 17, Service club member Gillian Thiel has been on student council at South Delta Secondary since Grade 9 and the experience encouraged her to develop her leadership skills.

Today, the Grade 12 student is an active member of her school's Interact Club, a Rotary Club-sponsored service club for high school students that gives young people a chance to participate in meaningful projects while meeting new people.

The Interact Club organizes projects and fundraising events throughout the year, from canned food drives to jewelry sales. One of Thiel's most memorable experiences with the group was joining forces with the local Rotary Clubs to deliver Christmas hampers for Deltassist Family and Community Services over Christine Lyon photo the holiday season.

"Making other people happy, seeing a smile on someone else's face, feeling like you've been able to make a difference—that was my main goal," she says, when asked why she maintains her involvement with the service club.

Thiel also excels at foreign languages and has been a French immersion student since kindergarten. In 2011 she participated in an exchange program and spent three months living in a small town in France.

Antony Tsui, 17, Student environmentalist For Antony Tsui, sitting in the cafeteria at lunchtime doesn't seem like a very productive way to spend an hour. That's why he fills his spare time with a variety of extracurricular activities.

The Grade 11 student is president of Delta Secondary School's Green Team, which is dedicated to educating people about ways to make the environment greener. As a Green Team member, Tsui acts as a BC Hydro Energy Ambassador, raising awareness about energy sustainability.

"We learn about energy conservation and we teach it to the people at our school," he says. "We also go out to the elementary schools around Ladner and we talk to kindergartens to Grade 7s about energy conservation and give Contributed photo them presentations."

DSS Green Team members also participate in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Every year, a group of high schoolers heads down to the Tsawwassen ferry causeway to pick up garbage that has washed ashore.

"That always attracts a lot of people from our school," Tsui says of the annual event.

The environmental club regularly applies for government grants. Tsui notes that the six rooftop solar panels installed on the roof of DSS were made possible by a $22,000 Solar BC grant.

In addition to his work with the Green Team, Tsui is also involved in student government and volunteers at a variety of Free The Children events.

Onni brings final high-rise project to Victoria Hill

This year, Grade 12 South Delta Secondary student Maddy Van Beek was recognized both for her talent as a performer and for her promotion of social equality.

Van Beek was awarded the B.C. Youth Gandhi Award in February. Presented annually by the Surrey Chapter of the B.C. Peace and Global Educators, the award recognizes youth who have a passion for giving back to the community and a desire to make the world a better place.

Van Beek and her fellow classmates resurrected the SDSS Gay Straight Alliance Club, which provides a safe place for students to discuss social issues and works to end homophobia.

Seventeen-year-old Monika Vlcek left her home in Austria a year ago to make her way to the hockey-mad environment of Canada and the Hockey Academy at South Delta Secondary school.

An international student, she was presented with a constant diet of training when not attending regular classes in Tsawwassen. And it paid off as last December the speedy forward was included on the roster for the U18 Women's World Championships in Tromso, Norway.

No stranger to the Austrian national team set up (Vlcek was at the previous tournament in Moscow) she made a significant contribution to the team scoring three goals in her five appearances as Austria finished second in the round robin phase of the Contributed photo six-team tournament. She turned the red light on in games against Hungary, Slovakia and Norway.

Not everybody wants to go to class first-thing in the morning, but Chance has some educating to do, and it takes just a few seconds for him to settle on her arm.

Chance is a Great Horned Owl, and,

at the risk of anthropomorphism, a good bird.

“The reason I know he’s so calm is that he’s not squeezing me,” explains Dick. “Normally, an agitated bird on a glove would squeeze quite hard.”

Chance has been an education bird at Delta’s Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) for nearly 13 years—he arrived on July 6, 1999 with a wing and eye injury. The eye has since healed, but the wing didn’t heal well enough for him to be released.

This particular morning, Chance will

go to two Vancouver schools with the OWL staffer to teach kids about birds of prey.

Dick, who started working at OWL last December, had five years of experience with a falconer on Vancouver Island.

“I’m slowly being trained in the rehab department, but in the meantime, I’m doing a lot of education because I know all about the birds and the handling of them.”

The Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay began almost nine months ago in Cape Spear, Newfoundland, and will make its way through Delta on May 20.

Some 7,000 participants from across the country are retracing the Canadian segment of Hansen's original Man in Motion World Tour. Medal-bearers will run, walk, wheel or bike and complete their segments through a variety of forms of movement for all abilities.

In every province, the medal-bearers will pass along the singular Rick Hansen medal produced by the Royal Canadian Mint.

By the time the relay concludes in Vancouver on May 22, it will have passed through more than 600 communities and travelled 12,000 kilometres. There will be a celebration at Delta Municipal Hall (4500 Clarence Taylor Crescent) at 10 a.m. on May 20.

Ladner-raised poet up for literary award Renowned poet Tim Bowling, who was born and raised in Ladner, has been nominated for the Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry for his tenth collection of poems, Tenderman.

The Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry is one of five Alberta Literary Awards, administered by the Writers Guild of Alberta, which recognize and celebrate the highest standards of literary excellence from Alberta authors.

Bowling, who is currently living in Edmonton, has been nominated for the Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry seven times, and has twice won the award, in 1998 and 2007. In Tenderman, Bowling outlines the central tension that acts as a vital force in the collection—the dichotomy between the sensitive poetic observer and the tough workingclass subject.

The Alberta Literary Awards come with a prize of $1,500; the winners will be announced at the Alberta Book Awards Gala in Calgary on June 9, 2012.

Comedy to take wing Airport restaurant aiming to raise profile with live shows Philip Rapahel, Editor South Delta Leader Live entertainment is set to take off at Boundary Bay Airport next month.

That’s when the Skyhawk Restaurant will host a comedy night.

Natalie Finkle, manager of the restaurant, says the setting is an open space concept in the western end of the terminal building and perfect for events like the one comedian/magician Randy Charach will kick off May 4.

It’s also a way of increasing exposure for the restaurant to a young client base, while keeping them local.

Finkle said the restaurant is already a hit with area customers and aviation buffs who enjoy the airside views provided by the

large windows looking out onto the tarmac and runway.

The Skyhawk Restaurant has been in business since 1988 and moved into its current surroundings in 2010 when Alpha Aviation opened the newly constructed terminal building.

“Although Skyhawk Restaurant has been in business for 23 years, much of the younger demographic of Delta is unaware of the restaurant,” said Finkle.

“This generation, of 18-35 year olds, has a need to dine-out two or three times a week and enjoy sharing their experiences with their social network. Young people dine out to set themselves apart as ‘hobby diners’ and to accommodate a fast-pace lifestyle; knowing all the hot spots to spice up their social life.

Therefore, Skyhawk Restaurant is incorporating a new lineup of

side-attractions to be, not only a ‘hidden gem,’ but also a new local hot spot for all the young people of Delta. Informing a new demographic is imperative for success. The first line of action is for entertainment to visit Skyhawk Restaurant.”

And that comes in the form of Vancouver-based Charach, a veteran entertainer whom Finkle discovered on an Internet search and signed up to perform.

If the show draws well Finkle said locals can expect a line up of more events.

“I have lots of ideas and believe Skyhawk Restaurant is the perfect venue for entertainment and option for the people who want to stay local in Delta,” she said.

The show starts at 7 p.m. on May 4. Tickets are $5 at the door.

Athletes supported $1,000 award aimed at national team candidates Aspiring young Delta athletes are getting a boost again from the Delta Kiwanis Club.

The local service group has confirmed its support of the Kiwanis Delta Memorial Sports Award which is presented to a youth who is aiming for a spot on a Canadian national team.

limited supply of inexpensive and renewable biomass fuel sources like wood waste."

He said the result is a sustainable system that reduces the carbon footprint of greenhouses.

Victor Krahn, CEO and cofounder of ProSelect, explained how the system works.

First biomass fuel, such as wood waste, is fed into a boiler.

The combusted biomass heats the greenhouses. Then the carbon-laden boiler flue gas is filtered and cooled. Flue gases enter the 60-foot-tall GC6 absorber tower where a patented solvent technology strips only carbon dioxide from the gas.

The stripped excess vapor is released into the atmosphere, while solvent from the buffer tank is heated and pure carbon dioxide is released to plants.

"Never before has there been a technology that can benefit the environment and the bottom line for greenhouse operators like the GC6 Carbon Capture System can," he said. "Our goal is to help reduce our industry's dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels while creating a sustainable legacy that supports locally grown food."

Politicians and stakeholders gathered in East Ladner on Friday (April 20) to witness a demonstration of what is being touted as the world's first carbon capture system for the greenhouse industry.

SunSelect Produce, located at 10250 Hornby Dr., has launched a GC6 Green Carbon Capture System, designed to heat greenhouse operations while simultaneously filtering pollutant emissions, capturing carbon dioxide and converting it into fertilizer to grow fruits and vegetables.

The $5-million system was made in Canada and created by B.C.-based ProSelect Gas Treating Inc. Reinhold Krahn, a director at both ProSelect and SunSelect, said the new technology does two important things.

"Firstly, it eliminates the emissions of harmful pollutants into the Earth's atmosphere from combustion of wood," he told the crowd. "Secondly, it transforms carbon capture into pure food-grade CO2 that's used as fertilizer to fertilize our healthy plants. And it does all of this by using the planet's un-

biomass and captures carbon dioxide at a rate of five tons per hour.

Until now greenhouse operators had to rely on non-renewable sources like natural gas and liquid CO2 for fertilizing crops.

ProSelect representatives say switching to the GC6 system could result in a significant reduction in fuel and energy costs.

Further financial benefits could include savings on chemicals and disposal fees and access to green government grants.

Partial funding for the GC6 Carbon Capture System pilot project was provided by the provincial government's Innovative Clean Energy Fund ($2.24 million) and the federal government's Sustainable Development Technology Canada's SD Tech Fund ($1 million).

In early April, Minister of Agriculture Don McRae visited Village Farms greenhouse in Ladner to announce that B.C.'s greenhouse vegetable and flower growers will receive a one-time carbon tax relief payment. That’s the message from the organizers of Gwen’s Growing and Giving plant sale, which is returning for its 18th year on Saturday, May 5.

“When we open at 9 (a.m.), it’s like Macy’s Boxing Day sale, it really is, so you have to be there early,” says Judy Matilda, one of the event planners.

The annual Ladner-based sale was initiated by the late Gwen Szychter in 1994. Every year, hundreds of donated plants are offered up for sale at a nominal price to benefit charity.

This year, money raised will go to the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) and the Delta Hospice Society.

Green thumbs can expect to find a variety of perennials, herbs and fruit and vegetables. Asian lilies, bicolour daylilies, silver edge SibeEDITION breeches, primrian EDITION irises, bear’s ulas and an assortment of hostas are just a few of the items up for grabs.

Once again Delta Mayor Lois Jackson is encouraging local children and youth to get things growing this spring and summer during her annual Garden Contest for Kids.

The contest invites those local youth between the ages of five and 16 to try out their green thumbs.

It can be in a balcony garden, container garden, patio garden or a vegetable garden.

The idea is to find ways to encourage youngsters to be active outdoors and learn how to garden.

There are great prizes for those selected as winners. They include facility passes and Parks, Recreation and Culture gift certificates.

Donated pots and soil will also be available and seed packages are available for a donation.

Organizers say last year’s sale was the most successful ever, raising over $3,300 in just three hours.

More than 2,300 plants were donated by community members and corporate sponsors.

“It’s all about sharing with our neighbours and taking the funds that we make and sharing it with the community,” says event facilitator Pam Mason.

What do North Deltans treasure most about their community?

Mark Sakai, executive director of the Delta Museum and Archives Society, is curious to find out.

Whether it’s the mighty Fraser River, the ancient archaeology sites along its banks, or the community’s long fishing history, Sakai wants to know what people, places and things the residents of North Delta identify with.

It’s part of a Delta Museum and Archives outreach program that hopes to connect North Deltans to their community’s history, and strengthen the link between the northern and southern sections of the municipality.

The Delta Museum and Archives was founded in 1969 by a group of Ladner historians and most modern-day Ladnerites are at least somewhat familiar with their town’s fishing village heritage and early pioneering families.

But it’s a different story in the North. For some, there is a perception that North Delta is simply a residential suburb that emerged after the George Massey Tunnel was built. But in fact, North Delta has a rich past predating the 20th century that may surprise some locals.

“Certainly Annieville has tremendous history.

The very first salmon cannery in British Columbia was established in Annieville at Gunderson Slough,” Sakai said. “It has traditionally been a settlement where Scandinavian immigrants came—hence the name Gunderson Slough.”

Meanwhile, Trinity Lutheran Church remains one of the oldest churches in Delta and Kennedy Trail—which was built by early settlers to link the Fraser River and Mud Bay—is an important historic landmark in North Delta, Sakai said.

In February, the Delta Museum and Archives will hold “mind-mapping” workshops with representatives from North Delta schools, local businesses, the South Asian community, church congregations, and other interested parties.

Participants will be asked what they treasure most about North Delta. And with the under-construction South Fraser Perimeter Road slated to

Boundary Bay Airshow returns in 2012 After taking a hiatus in 2011 due to construction of the 80th Street Overpass, the Boundary Bay Airport Airshow is set to return this summer.

On Monday (Jan. 16) Delta Council approved Alpha Aviation’s request to host the 2012 Boundary Bay Airshow with a beer and/or wine garden on July 28.

The Corporation of Delta will contribute $20,000 cash toward the event.

The 2009 and 2010 airshows were attended by more than 5,000 people.

E E Avcorp ships first batch of commun commun wing components

North Delta's Avcorp Industries celebrated completion of the first shipment of wing components for the new F-35 fighter aircraft on Jan. 19.

The J-35 is the latest fighter ordered by the Royal Canadian Air Force. Estimated to cost around $117 million each, the J-35 is slated to replace the aging F-18. Canada has ordered 65 planes.

Avcorp will work on 240 to 360 of the aircraft ordered by various customers, depending on how many of the aircraft carrier variant are ordered.

On hand to mark the event was Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence and Delta Richmond-East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

The contract is worth around $500 million and is expected to employ 50 to 75 workers over 10 to 15 years, said mark Van Rooij, CEO of Avcorp Industries.

Avcorp presently has 550 employees.

Pipes front and centre at gala Delta Police Pipe band to headline concert Friday, May 11 is a date to remember for the playing of the pipes.

That's when the Delta Police Pipe Band hosts its fourth Celtic Gala. It is also the weekend of Mother's Day, making it an ideal treat for mom and the rest of the family at the South Delta Baptist Church (1988-56th St.) in Tsawwassen.

This is a good opportunity for locals to see the band, which over the years has gained an international reputation after playing a host of major events that last year included a performance at Windsor Castle.

Closer to home, the annual Burns Dinner is traditionally sold out in short order.

Under consideration for 2013 are a music festival in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, the Moscow International Military Music Festival, Russia, and a return to the Basel International Military Tattoo, in Swit-

zerland.

In keeping with the high standard of entertainment the past Celtic Galas, this year’s fundraising concert will feature entertainers who are sure to delight the audience.

Eire Born Irish Dancers will make a return to the stage with traditional and “Riverdance” performances from their World Championship class dancers. The national award-winning Magee Secondary School Chamber Choir will provide their vocal talents to entertain with Celtic numbers.

Topping the bill will be the Celtic Folk group, Out of the Green. Comprised of Amy Stephen, Tim Readman, Jennie Bice and Allan Dionne, it is a fast-paced and lively act guaranteed to get your feet tapping.

The Delta Police Pipe Band will strut its stuff and perform traditional Scottish tunes together

with individual sets from the Regimental Highland Dancers and the Drum Cadence. Also featured will be the popular duet between the bagpipes, played by a Highland Piper, and the suona, played

by Piper Zhongxi Wu. This fusion of the music of East and West has now become a standard wherever the band plays and is universally greeted with enthusiasm.
