Got Craft?

Meet two of the designers from Vancouver’s largest indie craft fair Sassy Contessa

M

iranda Lievers is a Vancouver based ceramic artist, crafter, photographer, and creative small business owner/supporter/advocate.

After jumping ship from her fast-track corporate life, she dove head on into the creative life she’s built with her husband Reilly including a busy wedding & portrait photography studio - Blue Olive Photography - and her line of handmade goods.

Miranda’s typography inspired line is, in part, about turning the boxes that constrain artists around – she’s inspired by typography, by the pages of old books and by beautiful advertisements found in 100 year old journals. She has focused on her inspiration rather than her medium in developing her line – primarily, paper craft, ceramics, and fabric based printmaking.

What are some occupational hazards and highlights? Working for yourself definitely has it’s pros and cons. Huge plusses include a very short commute, weekday “networking” breakfasts with other self employed friends, and the flexibility to work from the beach on occasion. Hazards include having to be everything from maker to accountant to janitor at times, the lack of real vacations due to having no one to fill in for you if you leave town, and the fact that you end up working really long hours. On the whole, I consider the self employed world a win.

Any advice for crafters of the future? Make for yourself and what you love, rather than what you think others will want. If you love it, the people who love what you do will find you.

Best way to spend a girls’ day out in Vancouver? In the city - coffee at Nelson the Seagull or Matchstick, a walk up Main St. browsing the shops, and an afternoon at the beach with a picnic or small crafty projects to complete. Out of the city - Scandinave spa in Whistler is heaven on earth, and perfect to reset before getting back to real life.

How long have you been doing craft fairs? Favourite part of the experience?

I’m relatively new to the craft fair scene with only 3 years under my belt. My favourite part of Got Craft? is getting to see all my favourite crafty friends (with their own tables or walking through as visitors) and chatting up the regulars who come through the show.

The Beautiful Project

O

riginal illustrations, cheeky sentiments and a bit of whimsy—these paper works are designed with love. The Beautiful Project was established in 2005 by Vancouver graphic artist, illustrator and web designer, Jeannette Ordas. Her cards are inspired by her love of all things vintage and cute, from 1950’s cookbooks to textiles and typography, and have been featured on popular design blogs like Decor8, Design*Sponge and Poppytalk to name a few.

What are some occupational hazards and highlights? I run my own web design company (MatchboxCreative.com) with my husband, along with my card business plus a food blog (EverybodyLikesSandwiches.com), so I think can be sometimes difficult to tear myself away from the computer. So I make sure that I leave the house every day to go on walks and errands so I can feel connected to the real world. Being online may have it’s drawbacks, but it’s really great for connections and many people that I’ve met online have become real life pals.

What is your favourite occasion or sentiment to design for? I love designing birthday cards the best. There’s no one direction and you can go sweet and cute or wacky and a little oddball. Right now, I’m loving animals, from rabbits to bears to cats - all cute, but with a little sly look in their eye. They have personality and are quite charming, I think!

Your top 5 most beautiful places/ things in Vancouver: In no particular order: Habitat Island in False Creek. Find your own little island nook and have a picnic at sunset. It’s great place to sit by the water and watch kayaks and nature go by, smack dab in the middle of the city; A bike ride along the sea wall; Any night tucked into the Alibi Room - great craft beers, beautiful space and good food; The Aqua Bus, seriously, a ride on these little boats always tugs the ol’ heartstrings; The free blackberries that you can find throughout the city in late summer. Almost everyone I know has their favourite picking spot. Urban foraging at its most delicious.

How many years have you been doing craft fairs? What is your favourite part of the Got Craft? experience? The first craft fair that I participated in was the “I Heart Crafts” sale in Strathcona. It took place in my neighbourhood and I figured it was a good breaking-in event for the novice crafter. I had a great time. Later that year, I participated in Got Craft? and it instantly became my most favorite craft fair. It’s a great space to meet all your favorite creators and crafters face to face. My favorite part of Got Craft? is meeting my customers, many who come every year to stop by my booth to pick up new cards and chat.

tatistics from Nielsen’s Television Audience Report indicate that the average American household has 2.86 television sets, despite having just 2.5 people. It is also estimated that those in the U.S. will have watched the equivalent of 9 years’ worth of TV by the age of 65. Canadians spend 1,500 hours each year watching TV, and 128,000 Canadians have a TV in the bathroom.

Though TVs are located throughout the typical household, homeowners don’t always appreciate the look of a TV and how it fits in with their design scheme. That is why many seek ways to camouflage a television when it is not in use.

There are many ways to mask a television when not in use.

Homeowners can explore different options, depending on their particular budget and the available space.

Furniture: Television armoires and cabinetry are some of the most basic ways to hide a TV. The unit is housed behind doors that are closed when the TVis not on and can be opened and recessed when it’s time to watch a show. These pieces of furni-

On the move: There are mechanisms that can lower or raise a TV from a hidden location, whether in the floor or ceiling. The TV can descend or ascend vertically, or a hinged device can flip the TV up or down, depending on need, much like a small LCD television that mounts on the underside of a kitchen cabinet.

Under the bed: People have long embraced the under-thebed storage options, but what about using that space for a TV? Homeowners who have $10,000 lying around can purchase a mounting device that stores the TV under the bed, and then raises it into position at the foot of the bed with the touch of a remote control.

Track TV: With a system of trackwork, a television can swivel out of a hiding spot in a closet, cabinet or soffit and move into position on a pole connected to the track. Both manual and motorized tracks can be installed for a few hundred dollars.

Canvas cover: A less expensive option than some of the motorized devices available, a shade or tapestry on a manual device (think the window shades that you tug and the shade rolls up onto itself) can also conceal a television. Lower or raise the shade as needed.

Smaller scale: Smaller TVs are easier to camouflage. Think scale when placing a TV in a bedroom, bathroom or kitchen.

Simple decor accessories may do the trick of hiding the TV from view.

Although most people can’t get enough of their television viewing, the caveat is they don’t want the television to be an eyesore when not in use. Different concealment strategies can help mask a TV when it is not in use.
