Some 4,000 participants will gather on May 27 at Centennial Park to take part in Abbotsford’s Run for Water.

More than 500 runners will take on the event’s half marathon.

Many will be happy to break the two-hour barrier, some will try for a personal best, and yet others will run with a pace bunny group to hit a certain time.

One runner is on track to break the course record of 1:10:13 held

by Jeremiah Johnston. Former Canadian Team runner David Jackson is on schedule to run a 1:07 if everything goes well.

In the 10 years Jackson has run competitively, he has lived and trained with an elite group in Victoria, but moved to Abbotsford two years ago.

Special needs students will miss resource room

Carol and Doug Henriksen know their son Michael has it in him to drive a teacher around the bend if he is put into a regular classroom setting. And they know transferring him to a different school’s resource room will be upsetting to the boy, who has Down syndrome and autism, and set him back by perhaps half a school year.

However, those are their options after the Abbotsford school district decided to close the resource room at W.J. Mouat Secondary starting in September.

Chipo McNichols is equally worried about her 18-yearold daughter Caroline, explaining the teen has a rare disorder that inhibits her ability to metabolize protein. She is intellectually at about a Grade 1 level, but Caroline knows she is going to deeply miss her friends and teaching assistants at Mouat’s resource room.

“She is quite upset. This

When her family moved to Abbotsford from Hope, the resource room at Mouat started to make a difference in her daughter.

“For Caroline, it has been a lifesaver. She has grown so much as a person,” she said.

Their children can attend at a school that has a resource room, remain at Mouat in integrated classrooms with appropriate support, or attend their neighbourhood school in regular classrooms, with appropriate support.

Carol says 15-year-old Michael can’t be integrated into Mouat’s academic classes. He is integrated with an aide for metalwork and drama classes, but just won’t sit still in a “regular” class.

“It would be disruptive to the teacher and the students,” she said.

She explained Michael is also a flight risk. Once, in elementary school, he locked himself in a janitor’s closet, and his unexplained absence caused tremendous anxiety for school staff.

“He’ll just bolt on you,” said Carol. “He thinks it’s funny.”

Middle-aged female found by boaters The body of a middle-aged female was found floating in the Fraser River just west of the Mission Bridge Monday afternoon.

The body was loaded onto the boat and the vessel moored at the dock until the B.C. Coroner’s Service arrived shortly after 4 p.m.

Gross said the centre has seen almost 200 kids from the community, and 30 per cent of those have been from Bakerview, an alternative education program located on Marshall Road for people ages 14 to 65 years.

AYHC wanted to be more accessible to those students by offering services at the school one day a week for three to four hours as part of a “hub” that also includes social workers, probation officers, drug and

alcohol counsellors, and a street outreach worker.

The health centre would be available to Bakerview students, but might also be open to the community, Gross said.

Schafer said the school district has “an obligation to parents” to ensure the health and welfare of their children while in the district’s care, and parental consent should be a requirement for Bakerview students using the clinic.

Chipo explained Caroline was supposed to be doing Grade 13 at the resource room, which is a program tailored to help her transition into adulthood and be socialized as a young adult. Disrupting that could be devastating, she said.

“We didn’t have a voice. We had no input, no notice,” said Chipo.

Carol doesn’t buy the argument that Mouat’s resource room has too few students to be viable.

She has contacted the resource programs at Hansen, Abbotsford Collegiate and Bateman, and said each will have six or seven students next year – just as Mouat would.

Abbotsford board of education communications manager Dave Stephen said special needs students don’t need a resource room to be supported in their education.

There are 1,600 identified special needs students in the district, and many do not attend classes at a resource room.

Many schools don’t even have one, and some school districts don’t use them, favouring full integration into classrooms.

“Integration has been a long-established arc in education,” he said, adding the goal of educators is to integrate students as much as possible.

Stephen said the decision to close the resource room came after a review revealed the number of students using the facility at Mouat had been in steady decline.

The decision was made to realign services to where there is greatest demand.

“Whatever those students’ needs are, we will continue to support them,” he said.

The artist was speaking at his namesake school on Tuesday. Bateman gave two presentations, one on art and one on the environment, during his day-long visit.

Glimpse of Liberal future Barring major unforeseen events, the NDP will likely win the next election.

That was made clear in last Thursday’s two byelections. The NDP won Port MoodyCoquitlam by a sizeable margin. They had a popular candidate (and former Liberal) in recently-retired Port Moody mayor Joe Trasolini, and results were much as expected.

The real surprise and key result was in Chilliwack-Hope, where the NDP won a seat they have never held.Gwen O’Mahony took the seat in a three-way fight, with the BC Liberal vote melting away, and the resurgent BC Conservatives coming third with 25 per cent of the vote, despite a poorly funded and disorganized campaign.

Liberal candidate Laurie Throness got 4,399 votes and 31 per cent of the vote. This compares with Barry Penner in the 2009 general election, who got 8,985 votes.

So the Liberals, in the course of three years, lost more than half their support, with a large proportion of that going to the BC Conservatives, whose candidate John Martin got 3,548 votes.

There is another factor – the voter turn-

out. In the 2009 election, 16,865 votes were cast in Chilliwack-Hope. Last Thursday, despite the scrutiny this race has been under, and numerous visits by the premier and other party leaders, 14,013 people voted.

That means more than 2,800 stayed home — likely because they wouldn’t vote for the Liberals, and did not want to vote for anyone else. If the Liberals can convince most of those people to come back to them in the next election, the Liberals will win seats like Chilliwack-Hope next year.

However, the vote splits in other ridings put the NDP in position to form the next government. The Liberals won a number of seats in 2009 by narrow margins (one by just 88 votes), with little or no Conservative opposition.

If the Liberals can convince enough disaffected voters to come back to them, they will keep some traditional strongholds.

But unless their political fortunes improve drastically – and soon – in three-way election fights they will lose many of the seats they now hold.

B.C. Views NDP victories in two byelections bring the standings in the legislature to 46 B.C. Liberals, 36 NDP and three independents, one of whom has pledged allegiance to the B.C. Conservatives.

B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins put a brave face on his third-place finish in Port Moody-Coquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope. Even in bedrock conservative Fraser Valley farm country, in a protest byelection with a high-profile candidate, the B.C. Conservatives managed to attract just enough to deliver a landmark NDP seat.

The NDP was helped by the absence of the B.C. Green Party on the byelection ballots, with most of its five per cent support from 2009 presumably going to the winners.

Cummins said his party’s goal going into the Port Moody-Coquitlam vote, with an unknown candidate and a handful of volunteers, was to break 10

per cent. They got 15 per cent and he declared a moral victory.

Cummins rejected a possible merger with the “discredited” B.C. Liberals. Premier Christy Clark was equally emphatic that she will be the leader of the “free enterprise coalition” in the 2013 election.

So the stage is set for an NDP majority government.

What will that look like? Well, Port Moody mayor-turned-MLA Joe Trasolini has a wealth of local government experience, so pencil him in as municipal affairs minister. A long-time supporter of the B.C. Liberals, Trasolini should clarify if he endorses the NDP constitution, which still opposes all profitmaking activity.

He’s not the only high-profile newcomer likely to be included in an Adrian Dix cabinet.

New NDP candidates from union executive ranks will likely include long-time Hospital Employees’ Union president Judy Darcy. She no longer talks about bringing a “Marxist analysis” to economic matters. Darcy is now best known for leading the long court battle against the B.C. Liberal government’s contractbreaking legislation of 2002.

The eventual decision of the Supreme

Court of Canada basically invented a constitutional right to collective bargaining. (The high court could also ponder if there might be a right not to belong to a union, but that’s another story.)

Then there’s George Heyman, the longtime B.C. Government Employees’ Union president.

Then we have B.C.’s third-largest political party, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation...

After leaving the BCGEU, Heyman has taken a turn as executive director of Sierra Club B.C., a branch plant of the U.S. enviro-machine that works against B.C. forest, mining, power and petroleum development.

These folks would be working with Stephen Howard, who went from senior positions at the BCGEU and CUPE to his current role as Dix’s chief of staff. Dix, of course, benefited from the sudden

ouster of Carole James, who made the mistake of trying to loosen big labour’s grip on the NDP and modernize some of its quaint 1930s notions.

Then we have B.C.’s third-largest political party, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, which has already confirmed it will continue its long campaign to replace the B.C. Liberals with the NDP next year.

Such a team brings impressive experience, but unfortunately for taxpayers, much of that experience has been in extracting money from the public treasury.

And if recent B.C. history is any guide, this fundamental conflict of interest will receive little or no media attention in the months to come.

Instead, the conventional wisdom will be that voters want “change.”

That protest boat was directed at a U.S. nuclear test off Alaska, not a Soviet test as stated. AND IMPLEMENT COMMON RATES On April 11, 2012, the FortisBC Energy Utilities applied to the British Columbia Utilities Commission to amalgamate their natural gas utilities across the province and to implement common rates and services across their service areas starting January 1, 2014. Currently, FortisBC Energy Utilities is made up of three separate natural gas companies, operating in six service areas. The companies have their own services, service agreements (tariffs) and rates. If approved, the application would combine the three companies into one, under a single tariff, with common rates for the various regions.

This Application has different implications for customers in each service area. If approved, customers in the Vancouver Island and Whistler service areas will see rate decreases, while customers in the Lower Mainland, Columbia, Inland, and Fort Nelson service areas will see an overall rate increase.

Abbotsford’s David Rushton will conduct the 55-voice Gloria Dei Chorale during a concert of Choral Classics taking place May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Parish of St. Matthew, 2010 Guilford Drive in Abbotsford.

The Gloria Dei Chorale was

founded in 1954 as a choir of the Christian Reformed Church of New Westminster, and for the first 12 years it performed primarily in that church for special occasions.

To conclude the choir’s 2011-2012 season, a varied program has been planned including choral

favourites from Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Creation, Rutter’s Requiem as well as works by Beethoven and others.

Guest soloists will perform several selections. These include sopranos Charlotte Abbott and Leah Cummins, accompanists

Suzanne Klukas, piano, and guest organist Ay-Laung Wang, and oboist Deborah Hunter.

Tickets to this concert are still available for $15 each or $35 for a family pass. Tickets are available at House of James and Kings Music or at the door.

Back on track

In any other year, traveling to Toronto for a national track and field meet would be a huge thrill for high school athletes.

But this year, the opportunity to participate in the Nike High School Grand Prix is particularly exciting for Nicola Hiller, Jenna Thiessen and Cambria Wiens of Mennonite Educational Institute.

The inaugural Nike event offers the Eagles’ trio a rare chance to compete – and a high-profile one, at that – in a season where the high school track and field campaign has been largely derailed by the labour dispute between public school teachers and the B.C. government.

All of the AbbotsfordMission district meets have been cancelled – a product of public school teachers withdrawing volunteer services, leaving a shortage of people to run the track events.

“It’s a good opportunity to still get to do some track,” Hiller noted, looking ahead to the Nike Grand Prix, which runs on May 12.

“It’s something we’re really looking forward to, and we’ve been training every day.

We’re really excited, and we’re going to try our hardest there, because it might be the only big thing we get to do this year.”

The Nike event will bring together upwards of 250 athletes from provinces and territories across Canada, and is billed as a “celebration of sport, culture and youth.” The three MEI students are joining 12 athletes from West Point Grey Academy in Vancouver to form the girls team which will represent B.C. All three Eagles are participating in the 100 metres and the 4x100m relay.

Additionally, Hiller and Wiens will both take part in the long jump, Thiessen and Hiller will run the 200m, and Thiessen is entered in the 100m hurdles.

MEI track coach Kristen Meindertsma said that if her team had known earlier that the local high

school meets would be cancelled, more athletes would have applied to attend the Nike meet.

“In hindsight, I

think I could have 15 athletes that would go,” she said. “It’s a little bit too bad. But the three that are Continued on A17

Craddock wins Basketball BC award

University of the Fraser Valley men's basketball coach Barnaby Craddock was honoured with a coaching excellence award at the Basketball BC Hall of Fame and Awards Dinner on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

The Cascades bench boss was one of four recipients of the coaching award, along with Deb Huband (UBC women),
