President's Message As the CEO of Fortwood Homes, I have been a member of CHBA Northern BC for many years, and am very happy to be the Association’s president for a second year in 2011-2012. Fortwood Homes was established in the early 1970s by my father, Antonio Rebelo, whom I have worked with all of my life.

After I graduated High School, I took the Building Construction Technology course at the College of New Caledonia. I then worked hand in hand with my father and also became involved with CHBA Northern BC in various aspects including being a Director. Eventually our whole family became involved in the daily operations of Fortwood Homes.

Fortwood became a member of the CHBA Northern BC because my dad said that the biggest thing anyone can contribute to the construction industry is knowledge, education and networking; and the biggest investment any company can make is knowledge, education and networking. The Canadian Home Builders’ Association is, without a doubt, the best way of accessing all three of these very important aspects of our industry.

Right across the country, the CHBA is working hard to become as memberfocused as possible to add value to membership and advocate for the concerns of members, while informing consumers about the benefits of choosing CHBA members to build their homes. Métis Housing Society REnEWs skills and homes By: Leo Hebert

The Prince George Métis Housing Society (PGMHS) is the urban Aboriginal housing provider for Prince George. The society presently manages a portfolio of 159 low income units. The Society is very interested in reducing GHG emissions and working with others to provide capacity building for individuals as well as educating its tenants about energy efficiency. “Energy Poverty” is a term used to describe the situation some low-income families and individuals are facing. Some have to make a decision to either buy food or pay the utility bill. We want to work with others to reduce GHG emissions, but just as importantly, help our tenants reduce their utility bills for their homes amid rising utility costs.

The Society has completed energy audits for some of their homes and has initiated improvements as recommended by the auditor. Residential Energy and Efficiency Works (REnEW) is an innovative employment training program that specializes in energy efficiency, basic construction, and retrofitting. REnEW targets individuals who have little or no experience in the formal labour market and struggle with barriers to employment.

New Homes Registry keeps Homebuyers Informed Savvy homebuyers are taking advantage of free access to the New Homes Registry to stay informed.

This helpful, easy-to-use, online resource is available from the provincial government’s Homeowner Protection Office (HPO) website. Prospective homebuyers are using the registry to make more informed purchasing decisions.

Homebuyers, as well as realtors, lawyers, local governments, and others can quickly check the residential builder licensing and warranty status of a new home or a new home under construction.

The New Homes Registry provides free access to find out if a home has a policy of home warranty insurance and is built by a Licensed Residential Builder, or whether it is built without home warranty insurance.

Homebuyers can obtain valuable information such as the name and contact number of the warranty provider, the builder’s warranty number and whether an owner-built home can be legally offered for sale.

Every new home built for sale by a Licensed Residential Builder in British Columbia is protected by mandatory third-party home warranty insurance. Better known as 2-5-10 home warranty insurance, this coverage includes: two years on labour and materials, five years on the building envelope (including water penetration), and 10 years on the structure. It’s the strongest system of construction defect insurance in Canada.

The New Homes Registry allows homebuyers to search online at their convenience for both single detached homes and multi-unit homes registered with the HPO after November 2007.

The History:

CHBA Northern BC • In late 1957 or early 1958, George Creuzot, Tom Wright, Bill Robertson and Dick Foxcroft met to discuss the advantages of having an organization to represent both the builders, and the trades • February 14, 1958 – The Prince George Contractor’s Association formed, with approximately 12 members.

George Creuzot was elected its first president.

The association was focused around three main points.

1. To bring builder’s and trades together, to work toward their common goals.

2. To bring more stabilization to the building community 3. To bring more recognition to membership as a whole.

• June 21, 1958 – In a joint project between The Prince George Contractor’s Association and the Kiwanis. A school for challenged children was to be built with a twist, that it be completed in just one day. With local radio and national TV coverage, the project started at 3:00 am, and finished about 15 miniutes ahead of schedule at 5:45 pm.

• September, 1959 – The Prince George Builder’s

Exchange was formed.

• November, 1962 – Finding that the same people were attending The PG Contractor’s Association and The PG Builder’s Exchange, the two were amalgamated.

• September 1964 – The Prince George Home Builder’s Association was formed.

• The Canadian Home Builder’s Association of British Columbia is formed here in Prince George, and operates for some 10 years before it is relocated to the Vancouver region.

• July 25, 1977 – The name was changed to H.U.D.A.C, (Housing

Murray is an acclaimed educator in his field and has been instrumental in the development and presentation of leading curriculum to the construction industry.

In addition, he has delivered relevant, non-technical

seminars to homeowner groups and has vast experience in dealing directly with home owners facing challenges with new construction and renovations.

Welcome to the Horticulture Division!

Display and share your talents and your Green Thumb by entering Classes in the Horticulture Section.

Judging will be done by: David Douglas Botanical Garden Society.

Please Consider: • A limit of two entries is permitted per class.

• Entries in all classes must have been grown and owned by the exhibitor for the 2012 growing season.

• Bring Entries in suitable, inexpensive containers such as, clean jars, plain glass or pottery. Please no plastic, aluminum foil, plastic wrap or Styrofoam.

• Entries will be arranged on the display table by the representatives of the PGX. Please do not place your Entry where you think it should go.

• Please follow the rules for size of Entries.

• Be sure to have plenty of water in your container.

• Children must do their own arranging.

Section H2: CUT FLOWERS – Annuals Remove leaves below water line. All should be of the same variety. Colour variation okay. Consistency in size, shape and quality is important. Remove Buds. The same number of blooms on each stem is preferred.

Section H6: VEGETABLES To be displayed on plates. Rhubarb & Zucchini entries do not need a plate – variety names to be included; if possible Entries should appear “Table Ready” – wrap leaves.

Scales and stalks should be left on when applicable, except as indicated. Label varieties, if possible. Extra points are given for consistency in size & shape. All vegetables must be this year’s crop. Size should be moderate, not large except when called for. Entry will be cut into, to determine its internal appearance.

S1915: ROSS CUP This cup was first presented to the fair in 1915 and donated by the Honourable William R. Ross, Minister of Lands. It was awarded until 1928 when it disappeared for 22 years. It “came to light” in 1950 and was awarded until it disappeared again in 1964. It was found in 1987 and the challenge revived. The Ross Cup will retire after 2012.

Regular entry fees apply Criteria: Awarded to the family winning the most aggregate points in Livestock, Home Arts & Horticulture and 4-H; all three of these divisions must be entered, to qualify. Families must enter this class with the name and exhibitor number of each family member. (This trophy will not be awarded to the same winner more than three times).

1st Prize: $50.00, name plaque on the trophy, Ribbon & invitation to Appreciation Luncheon held post fair.

S100: SILVER TEA SERVICE Criteria: The more classes you enter in Home Arts & Horticulture, the better your chances of being awarded the prize! How it works: Every first place award in a class (on items entered in Home Arts & Horticulture) receives 6 points, every second place award receive 4 points and for every third place award 3 points.

The Home Arts Division Chair will calculate your points.

S1953: CAINE CUP (Apple Cup): The Caine Cup was donated by the late Martin S. Caine in 1953.

The Annual Apple Cup was for the best display of three varieties of apples grown within fifty miles of Prince George. It is presented for a single variety of apples. The cup was awarded until 1960 when it was misplaced until 1987 when it was refurbished and presented. In 2009 the PGX made a decision to modify the criteria for winning this cup.

Regular entry fees apply, one entry per person.

Criteria: Best apple pie made from local Crab Apples.

Winner must include recipe.

Home Arts & Horticulture: YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE, SPECIAL CLASSES Cont.

Class & Description: YOUTH IN AGRICULTURE AWARD *NEW* beginning 2012.

Judging Criteria: The person that receives the most aggregate points in the Youth in Agriculture Special Classes (Class #’s YS01, YS02, YS03, YS04, YS05, YS06, YS07, YS08), will receive a keepsake trophy as well as your name on the annual perpetual trophy. The more Classes you enter the better your chance of winning this Trophy (and the more ribbons and prizes you win, in other Classes)! So get growing, sewing, baking, building & writing!

YS01. ROOT YOUR RADISHES: • Open to Youth aged 12 years old and under • Radishes entered should be no less than 3 and no more than 6. Leaves and roots are to be left on and radishes should be free of soil (cleaned but not scrubbed) and free of splits/cracks and scabs.

Come in to the PGX office to receive everything you need (growing kit) to start growing your own radishes in time to Enter them into the Fair!

Kits are available beginning Sat. May 26, 2012.

On Saturday, May 26th, 2012 the office will be open, 10am-5pm, especially for you to *Register and to pick up your growing kit. One kit per person; open to Youth aged 12 years and under. You may come in any time after this date during regular office hours; however, the later you pick up your kit, the shorter the growing time before the PGX! Also, the number of kits is limited.

The growing kit includes seeds, soil, peat pots and hints and tips to growing your radishes. Also, at the time of *registration you will receive a FREE one day/any day admission pass to come to the PGX to check out the blue ribbon winners! You must be registered to receive your free admission pass. *Registration: to be Registered means you have completed an Entry Form and paid your $1.00 Entry Fee to the PGX office – on or before the July 28th, 2012 deadline for Entries into Home Arts & Horticulture.

For large orders please call in advance.

YS02. VEGETABLE SCULPTURE: Dress up as many vegetables as you would like to create your favourite “Farm Scene”. Get creative! Toothpicks etc. may be used for props. The Vegetable Sculpture must be displayed on a sturdy surface such as cardboard, and the surface must not be more than 24 inches in length or width. No glass or sharp edges for surfaces are permitted. Sculptures must not overhang the surface. Sculpture may be smaller if you wish, but the maximum will be enforced.

Judging criteria: 50% Variety of Vegetables used 40% Creativity 10% Theme: Farm Scene 1st Place: $15.00 + Ribbon 2nd Place: $10.00 + Ribbon 3rd Place: $ 5.00 + Ribbon

YS03. C IS FOR COOKIES: Bake cookies using your favourite recipe and present 4, any kind, named. The Recipe MUST be attached to your Entry and the Entry must be covered with saran wrap or food safe paper and presented on a plain paper plate – OR consider using an inexpensive non disposable plate that will not be returned but will be donated to be recycled, post fair.

Judging criteria: 50% Taste 20% Uniformity of Shape 15% Colour 15% Aroma 1st Place: $15.00 + Ribbon, 2nd Place: $10.00 + Ribbon 3rd Place: $ 5.00 + Ribbon YS04. LEGO: Build a piece of agricultural equipment such as a tractor, baler or a combine; extra points are provided for “moveable” parts!

No props (outside of Lego pieces) are permitted. Please note there are no additional points for the overall size of the Entry, rather the Judging Criteria is as follows.

DUCT TAPE CREATION: Use your imagination and a roll of duct tape (or two) to create a wallet or small purse. Items such as glitter glue, studs or other decorative materials can be used. Coloured duct tape is permitted. Covering an existing wallet or purse is not permitted.

CRAZY CONTAINER: Grow herbs, flowers or vegetables in an unusual container that you would find in your home such as a hat, shoe, can, frisbee or any item that you would not normally use for growing. Name of the plants must be attached and plants may or may not be grown from seed.

Judging criteria: 50% Creative Container & presentation 30% Appearance and health of the plant(s) 20% Variety of plants used 1st Place: $15.00 + Ribbon, 2nd Place: $10.00 + Ribbon 3rd Place: $ 5.00 + Ribbon YS07. MY FUNNY PET: Take a picture of a funny thing your pet does or a humorous expression. Photo must be mounted on a 12” x 12” matt board.

Photo must not exceed the size of the matt board and must include a brief explanation of the picture, not to exceed 25 words.

Home Arts & Horticulture: COUNTRY FAIRS BAKING CONTESTS 2012 Country Fair Baking (C.F.B.) Contests “2012” Rules and regulations • All entrants into the contests must submit entries that were made using the sponsor’s product.

• A product label must accompany each entry, as proof of purchase. ACH Foods will require only one proof of purchase from either Mazola Corn Oil or Bee Hive Corn Syrup..

• All entries will be judged on appearance, texture, creativity of recipe and presentation. Decision of the fair judge(s) will be final.

• First and second place winners’ names and address must be submitted.

• All first place winners must submit recipe, proof of purchase, photograph and signed release form giving permission to the sponsors for use of the winner’s name, recipe and/or photograph in any other advertising or publicity without payment.

• The fairs will send to C.F.B. the signed release forms, recipes and photo for the first place winners along with a list of all the names and addresses for 2nd place winners where applicable.

• C.F.B. contests will reimburse each fair for cash winnings up to a maximum of $80.00 per fair upon receipt of winners signed declaration form from the fair convener. C.F B. reserves the right to substitute gift prizes for a cash prize equivalent of $10.00 first place and $6.00 second place. The fair is responsible for distribution of prizes to individual winners.

HOME ARTS & HORTICULTURE: BC Fairs Members Choice Awards Chairperson: Please call the PGX office, 250 563-4096 Winning Entries in this section will go on to compete with the winning Entries from other fairs from around the province; provincial judging takes place at the annual BC Association of Fairs & Exhibition’s Convention in the Fall of 2012. A special prize is awarded for the provincial first place winner in each Category.

How to Enter: Regular Entry Fees apply. Please use the Home Arts & Horticulture Entry Form, using Member’s Choice Awards as the description.

Deadline for Registration: Saturday, July 28th, 2012 at 5pm.

• The BCAAFE will award a $50.00 cheque payable to the exhibitor of the winning Entry, together with a beautiful plaque in each category.

• The winning entry in each category will be selected by ballots submitted by delegates and guests at the 2012 BCAAFE Conference in October.

BCAAFE Member’s Choice Category #1 SEWING: Open to all ages. ITEM: Stuffed fabric animal. THEME: Farm Yard Animals SIZE: Minimum 12” x 12” to a maximum of 18” x 18” Exhibitor may use embellishments, i.e.; buttons, bows, ribbons, bells, etc. to decorate item. Clothing can also be used to adorn the item, but it must be made by the exhibitor.

BCAAFE Member’s Choice Category #2 COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY: Open to youth (ages 17 years and under) THEME: Farm Yard Animals. SIZE: 8” x 10” (not to be digitally altered beyond the standard optimization) MOUNTING: to protect prints from damage, all photos must be mounted on a firm backing with ½ inch to 1-inch black mat border.

Frames or glass will NOT be accepted. NO UNMOUNTED PHOTOGRAPHS WILL BE ACCEPTED. BCAAFE Member’s Choice Category #3 B.C. 4-H EDUCATIONAL DISPLAY: Open to all B.C. 4-H Club’s Project criteria: As per the B.C. 4-H guidelines.
