from a proposed new underpass. Over the last year, the conservation partners of Lazo Marsh Conservation Area have been working with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to study amphibian migratory corridors at Lazo Marsh. The study found the newts, salamanders, frogs
and toads need help. Efforts to cross from one side of the marsh to the other using Lazo Road often ended in tragedy for these creatures. A new underpass that mimics the marsh surroundings is proposed to assist with crossings and help sustain amphibian populations. It is anticipated that mitigation works will commence
in 2012. You are likely to hear a loud chorus of support from the marsh on spring evenings for this ‘newt highway’ from the Pacific chorus frog and red-legged frog, two species, which will surely benefit from this critical conservation work. – The Friends of Comox Lazo Forest Reserve

Making home improvements doesn’t have to mean compromising environmental ideals in the process. There are numerous jobs that a person can do that fit with a green lifestyle. While these improvements help protect the planet, they’ll also help keep a few extra dollars in your wallet.
1. CONSERVE WATER. Turn off the tap between brushing teeth or rinsing off dishes. Better yet, install low-flow faucets, showerheads and toilets that reduce the consumption of water in the household.
10. GLASS FIREPLACE DOORS: Install glass fireplace doors, which are safer than fireplace screens. They’ll also help protect against heat loss up the chimney when there isn’t a fire lit.
2. MOTION DETECTION: Motion-detector lights can be installed in different rooms of the home and outdoors. Lights will automatically turn on and off depending on the activity in the area, reducing the chances of a light being left on inadvertently and wasting money and energy.
11. BUY A SOLAR COVER. Warm up your spa all season long with a solar cover, which helps keep debris out of the water, too. Solar covers reduce the need to fire up the heater to warm the water.
3. SOLAR PANELS: You may have been toying with the idea of solar panels for years. They can be installed on the roof or in the yard to power various components of the household, like lights during a traditional power outage or the swimming pool filter. Today it is possible to buy used solar panels, many of which still have a lot of life left to them and are considerably cheaper than new ones. 4. ALUMINUM-CLAD STORM DOOR: Insulate the entryway of your home with a storm door that will buffer against harsh weather conditions. While you’re creating a more air-tight space, caulk around windows and doors.

5. REPLACE AIR FILTERS. Your HVAC system likely has filters inside that trap dirt and contaminants. Replacing the filters leads to cleaner indoor air and helps the unit run more efficiently. 6. POWER STRIPS: Stock up on power strips and plug all of your peripherals and computer equipment into these strips. This way when you want to power down everything completely, you simply turn off the power button on the strip. This ensures no devices are drawing power even in the off position, which many do. 7. INSTALL FANS. Fans aren’t just useful in the summer. In the winter, the blades can be set to rotate in the opposite direction and help draw warm air into the
room, heating more efficiently. 8. RAINWATER BARRELS: Set up rainwater barrels at the downspouts of your home’s gutter system. These barrels collect water that can be used to water indoor and outdoor plants, or even wash the car. Some feature a spigot to which you can directly connect a garden hose. 9. PLANT TREES. Trees are good for the environment in many ways, producing necessary oxygen for life and offering food and living areas for wildlife. Trees can also shade a home during the warm weather, helping reduce energy consumption.
12. DOG WASTE COMPOSTER: Create a method to safely dispose of dog waste without having to toss it in plastic bags in the trash. There are devices that can be buried into the ground to serve as a dog waste receptacle. Or you can make one of your own by placing a container with a lid that seals on top but has an open bottom. Sprinkle a natural bacteria septic tank product, such as Rid-X®, down the hole routinely and it will break down the waste and turn it into soil fertilizer. There are a variety of ways to go green with home improvements, whether extensive projects or small fixes.
Compost good for your soil Want to make your garden giggle, your earth wriggle and your plants blush with brilliant colour? Treat your soil to some good old fashioned homemade compost! Considered by the most proficient gardeners, not to mention Nature, to be the best way to improve soil and in doing so improve plant life. Compost is easy to make by using left over organics from your kitchen and garden. By layering your compost, with nitrogen-rich greens (the stinky stuff) with carbon rich browns (odour-free stuff), aerating now and then and watering if necessary to keep it moist, you can create a wonderful soil amendment in as little as a few weeks. When it looks like dirt and smells like dirt, it is stable compost! Use as a mulch, start seedlings or spread the joy of compost throughout your gardens and lawn. The City is starting to use a microclover blend in places that traditionally use grass. Microclover can retain the aesthetics and function of a traditional lawn with much less maintenance, water, and environmental impact.

The City has been experimenting with composting organic trimmings from its 135 hectares of parks and greenways over the past two years.
This year, the City’s hanging baskets will have felt liners instead of moss. Felt liners offer better water retention, are long-lasting, and eliminate the need to harvest moss.
The composting reduces waste being trucked away and also results in nutrient rich compost that is put back in the City’s parks and greenways.

This year, changes to the landscaping around the Firehall will include the use of compost, mulch, native plants, water harvesting and water-efficient irrigation. These practices are expected to reduce staff time (weeding, pruning and planting) as well as lower water use.

INVOLVED The trails in Northeast Woods can certainly seem like a well-planned maze that has tricked many visitors into hiking in circles. The Friends of Comox Lazo Forest Reserve (FOCLFR) are working to help trail users from getting lost. Since 1996 this group of local residents committed to good stewardship, preservation and protection of the forest and marsh have been meeting on a regular basis. They discuss issues in the conservation areas, work on plans to manage trail activities as well as organize and host volunteer work parties. It is the members of FOCLFR that have named and posted trail signs. Many trails are named after local pioneer families or flora and fauna found here. Others sport the names of the mountain bikers who were the earliest users and supporters of the trail system. FOCLFR members with help from a local towing company and the Comox public works crew clear the area of debris from the old Torrence Road dump. FOCLFR is currently discussing which trails to upgrade and what to do about those trails in the more sensitive areas. The objective is to provide recreational users the opportunity to explore and experience this amazing area, while protecting the special and rare ecosystems of the forest, meadows, sand dunes and wetlands. Comox councillor Barbara Price is chair for the society. She also represents FOCLFR on the Co-Management Committee for the Lazo Marsh-NE Comox Conservation Area. This committee includes representatives from Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource

BY USING PERMEABLE paving, surface water seeps evenly into the ground.
PERMEABLE PAVING: PRODUCT PREVENTS FLOODING The idea of permeable paving is not a new one. Decades ago, Chicago’s public alleyways were all permeable surfaces, usually made of bricks. These permeable roads allowed surface water to seep evenly into the ground and not collect on the surface. Over time, more than 3,500 acres of these surfaces have been paved with impermeable material such as asphalt or concrete. With this came the need for drainage features in an effort to direct surface water to the local storm sewer systems. PROBLEM: Water accumulation on the impermeable surfaces soon exceeded the capacity of the complex and expensive drainage systems designed to remove the water. SOLUTION: The City created a storm water management plan which would control surface water without the enormous expense of additional storm sewer improvements. This was achieved involving a variety of techniques includ-
ing the following: • Completely replacing impermeable surfaces with permeable materials, now longer requiring connection to the storm sewer system • Creating a permeable surface running down the center of the alleys and gently sloping the impermeable sides of the alley towards this permeable center line • Installing new permeable paving with its own subsoil filtration systems Using these methods, it is anticipated that storm water runoff will be reduced by as much as 80 per cent. In addition to avoiding costly storm sewer construction, this has reduced local flooding events and naturally recharges the groundwater. Where storm water and its pollutants once ran directly into our waterways, it now is naturally biofiltrated as it moves slowly through the soil before reentering our streams and oceans. Another modern problem arising from impermeable surfaces and lost ground water is the ‘urban heat island effect’. This too
is greatly reduced with the re-introduction of permeable surfaces. Creating solutions such as those described above can be achieved using a variety of materials including: • Reinforced plastic grids for grass or aggregates • Permeable concrete surfaces • Permeable pavers The benefits of rethinking the way we manage surface and storm water are many. Storm sewers are extremely expensive to build and maintain. Localized flooding affects homeowners, governments and businesses alike. When pollutants from our streets run untreated into our waterways, it impacts everything from public swimming to sport and commercial fisheries as well as the overall health of our oceans. The opportunity exists for everyone, from homeowners to municipal and federal governments, to participate in addressing these problems.
