When Penny Cheng was a little girl, she dreamed of becoming an artist or a movie star. But her parents envisioned a more practical, stable future for her. So she went into accounting. In June, her two childhood dreams will come true. Sort of. Bored by ledgers and numbers, Cheng took up making jewelry. The Queensborough resident started working with beads then discovered chainmaille a couple of years ago

while she was searching the Internet for new ideas to expand her horizons. Chainmaille is comprised of links of stainless steel, copper or brass rings knitted together. It’s what knights used to wear beneath their armour for added protection from piercing swords and battle axes. As there’s not much demand for armour anymore, Cheng forms intricate pendants and earrings with the chainmaille she crafts from scratch. It can be a tedious, time-consuming process. Starting with long straight wire, Cheng uses a drill and mandrel

to create the rings in a speci¿c size she needs for her designs. She then washes the rings in dish soap and scrubs them with a toothbrush. When she’s ¿nished weaving them together using two pairs of pliers, she soaks the chainmaille in lemon juice to clean off any residual gunk. A single pendant can take hours of twisting and knitting, taking a toll on her ¿ngers. The result, says Cheng, seems to have particular appeal to the Goth community and bikers. Looking to bring her creations to a new demographic, a message from

one of Cheng’s Facebook friends caught her eye; the Portuguese painter had submitted some of her work to a collective of artisans that creates swag bags for celebrity gifting events at awards shows like the Golden Globes, the Emmys and the Oscars. Each artisan pays a fee in addition to submitting their creations but the payoff if a celebrity like Ryan Reynolds or Lady Gaga is photographed on the red carpet wearing a unique item or says a kind word about it in an interview can be tremendous. When Jim Ervin of the Totem Model A and T Club arrived at New Westminster city council Monday evening to Àght for a revival of the Easter vintage car parade he found out the battle had already been won. At its Monday afternoon session, council told its staff to look at the feasibility of reviving the parade, dropped this year by the Hyack Festival Society, but with a major modiÀcation. Instead of closing city streets the parade participants would travel in ordinary trafÀc using the rules of the road. That would mean extra costs for policing and erecting barricades would be reduced drastically, if not eliminated. “It made me very happy, and now I think it’s going to make a lot of other people in the old car hobby world quite happy as well,” said Ervin on Tuesday. As James Janzen sat down beside Education Minister George Abbott in Victoria to sign an agreement for construction of two new schools in New Westminster he got a little nervous. Getting to this stage was more than a decade in the making. The schools project has had many incarnations, none of which have evolved from concept to actual bricks and mortar. So Janzen could be forgiven for being a bit anxious that nothing would go wrong when the deal was done. He couldn’t help but look over at Abbott just to make sure his pen wasn’t going to run out of ink, or his for that matter. “I would have to say there were times I wondered if this day would ever come and it has,” said Janzen, New Westminster school board chair. “A lot of people have been waiting. This is the ¿rst step in getting the high school replacement. Getting these two built will lead to the high school being replaced.” Abbott and Janzen signed agreements for the province to provide more than $30 million for a new elementary school on the former St. Mary’s Hospital site on Royal Avenue, and a middle school at the current John Robson elementary on Eighth Street. The St. Mary’s school will have a construction budget of $13.5 million. That’s on top of the $8.5 million the province spent in 2010 to purchase the property. Its 23 classrooms will have room for 650 students from kindergarten to Grade 5. Construction is scheduled to

But many complications cropped up, not the least of which was the discovery an old cemetery was buried beneath much of the property. Other solutions were bandied about for years before it was decided to purchase the former St. Mary’s Hospital site. In addition, land swaps with the city needed to be negotiated and other problems had to be solved before the district could take a plan to the province for ¿nal approval, which it did in December. “When we actually got all the paperwork into the ministry we wanted to make sure it was right and they weren’t coming back with questions, and they didn’t,” said Janzen. “I’m sure it’s been frustrating for the public, but you have to persevere and work through everything. Whatever it takes to get things done you do it. You can’t give up, you can’t surrender.” Trustee Casey Cook was one of those who ¿rst proposed the district look at private properties other than what was on the table during the election campaign of 2008. “Today’s a big day and it’s long overdue,” said Cook on Tuesday. “Today is a big day for the children of New Westminster. We’re going to hit the ground running. Our staff has done a lot of work for the preparatory process and they’ll be doing that as soon as possible. “It’s part of a progression. The middle school needs to happen ¿rst so we can get the middle school students from the west side currently going to the high school going to the middle school.”

It’s a system Ervin’s not enamoured with, but at least New Westminster’s would likely only go from the waterfront to Queen’s Park, a much shorter distance than the Vancouver parade. “Cars like mine need greater stopping distances for one thing, and of course, if you get on a parade route the more space you leave the more chance for

new vehicles to pull in front of you and cut you off the rest of the parade, as was happening with me this year, especially in the case of buses,” said Ervin. He wasn’t prepared to see the brakes put on the New West event for good, so he started to phone a bunch of politicians eventually getting in touch with Coun. Chuck Puchmayr. He was just as disappointed as Ervin at this year’s cancellation calling it “a pretty cool event.” He regretted not having come to its rescue before this Easter because the parade had meant so much to so many people, especially seniors, and those in the vintage car community. “I can’t see why we need to eliminate this completely,” Puchmayr said Tuesday. “Certainly if Hyack deems this as one of the events to drop, they’re an independent board, they have the ability to do this. We can accommodate the collective car community and we can continue on this event. “If you did it just as a drive through a route to Queen’s Park you wouldn’t need all those costs. It’s totally doable.” Ervin said the club can attract more than 100 cars to the parade, which in that past has concluded with the vintage vehicles parking in a lot behind the arena for park visitors to look at.

What about wildlife? The world’s thirst for oil is poised to turn the current trickle of crude through Vancouver’s harbour into a gusher. Kinder Morgan Canada announced this month it will seek to twin its Trans Mountain Pipeline between northern Alberta and Burnaby, increasing its current 300,000-barrel-per-day capacity to as much as 850,000. That means the number of tankers ¿lling up in Burnaby could hit 360 in 2016 – ¿ve times more than the record 69 crude tankers in 2010. Good for the economy, yes. But the question on many people’s lips involves a frightening scenario: What if there is a spill? Certainly, many safeguards are already in place. But there’s a hole in the prevention and remedy protocols big enough to sail a sizable ship through. What about wildlife? According to Coleen Doucette, vice-president of the Oiled Wildlife Society of B.C., there are no laws compelling companies to clean up birds and animals impacted by a spill. Oil spill response usually involves containing spills with booms and collecting the oil using skimmers. If the responsible party requests a wildlife rescue response, Western Canada Marine Response Corporation may manage it or hire a professional organization to perform it. The problem is, not all responsible parties choose to respond to oiled wildlife. This loophole is particularly troubling in light of recent news that marine mammals are making a comeback in the Salish Sea after decades of decline. Thanks to conservation efforts, sea lions, seals, orcas, humpback and ¿n whales, dolphins and elephant seals are dramatically increasing in numbers. Our pristine coastlines and their animal inhabitants are among B.C.’s most precious resources. If the province does agree to open its shores to more tanker traf¿c, protection for our marine animals and waterfowl must be part of the equation. –Black Press

oes anyone tinker any more? Tinker, verb: attempt to repair or improve something in a casual or desultory way. Synonyms: mend, dabble, monkey around with, adjust slightly, mess about with. Slang: rearrange the deckchairs on the Titanic. Is there time for non-speci¿c activities like pottering, ¿ddling, thinking, testing, experimenting, and inventing? Or are the days consumed by just getting through the week? We do lessons and interest groups. We do travel and worship. We do family, friends, and neighbours. Tinkering, not so much. Some very smart minds say we need to tinker. NASA now selects its new engineers on the basis of whether they had mechanical hobbies in their youth. MIT offers remedial building classes to students who rely too much on computers for design ideas and construction strategies. And shop teachers (in the few remaining high schools that have them) notice too many students who don’t know how to hold a hammer correctly, or how to use a power tool. The modern lifestyle of two

Velcro runners, T-shirts (no buttons), computers, and push-button toys affect how young children develop manipulative skills. Yes, X-Box games will develop some manual dexterity but will boys learn “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey” or just how to explode the enemy ninjas? And which is more useful? And which is more rewarding? Maybe it’s easier to have kids indoors in front of the TV rather than out in the yard getting dirty and making a mess. Basements have rental suites, home theatres, or storage rooms rather than workshops. Garages have two cars and patio furniture, recycling boxes and bikes—little room for a tool bench.

We don’t repair small appliances like we used to; we return them, we replace them. And that’s partly because they don’t have mechanical parts that could be repaired. Take apart a rotary phone and you can play with the parts. Take apart a cellphone and you’ll ¿nd only two pieces of plastic, a chip and a screen. It is modular and can’t be repaired. It is uncommon for us to recondition appliances inherited from grandparents; old lawn mowers, outboard motors, or sewing machines ourselves. Specialists do that. I think of our Cuba holiday when we saw the most ingenious vehicles on the road. The Cubans are great tinkerers. They can cobble together a motorcycle out of mixed parts and keep it going for years. Eight-year-olds in South Africa make trucks out of pop cans. Boys in Brazil build their own boats. But necessity or poverty needn’t be the impetus for tinkering. Remember when kids made simple go-karts out of backyard odds and ends? Those children learned about axles, acceleration, and accidents. Now, many don’t

have backyards, let alone scrap material. They don’t have the time or the space to work on something. They may not develop the interest in working on something. I don’t long for the golden olden days of some ¿ctional idyllic past, but I do want our society to retain its hands-on skills. Economists say Canada faces a shortfall of skilled tradespeople in the near future, and government is investing in training programs to meet this need. Yet, many apprentices struggle with mechanical skills and drop out before completing their programs. Instructors notice the growing number of applicants who haven’t had hands-on experiences, and who haven’t had to persevere to get something to work. The upside is that tinkering is play. It’s good to think and create. A young man could explore materials and improvements. He could envision what is needed and create that part or system. A young woman could discover motors and tools, practice carpentry and safety in the workplace. They could learn the value of hands-on skills. They could learn to like it.

Queen’s Park could use community garden Dale Darychuk’s letter last week really got me excited. First off, I just want to start by saying kudos Dale! I have been thinking along the same lines for the past seven years that I’ve lived here in New West. I absolutely agree Queen’s Park could de¿nitely use a community garden, etc. maybe using the unused portion of land closest to the Sixth and McBride entrance (right across from a co-op and the Queens Park daycare). However, what about the large empty lot right beside 321 Agnes St. and the other even larger sloped lot just in behind it where Albert Street used to be? This area is far more “rundown” than the Queen’s Park neighbourhood and could really use a colouful facelift in my opinion. I popped into city hall the day before reading Dale’s letter to inquire about the larger sloped lot and was a little disappointed to learn both these properties have been re-zoned for more highrises! Like we don’t have enough of these

already! I was also told that the smaller lots’ re-zoning application is actually on hold and may be challenged. Both lots have been sitting empty and unused for at least three years. The larger for at least seven! Why?!! There are numerous, in fact upwards of over 50 community Àower and vegetable gardens all over the Lower Mainland and only one tiny one I’m aware of in New West at Barnabas Church near 12th Street. What I propose, perhaps, is these two lots be roto-tilled and cultivated into: a separate wild Àower garden, attracting hummingbirds and various varieties of butterÀy species for the cute little brown heritage home at 321 Agnes; and the larger, sloped lot just in behind it, be simply roto-tilled and built up a bit more to be put to use as a more sustainable, year-round fruit and vegetable garden (not unlike the Mayan elevated terrainstyle gardens in Mexico!) Both properties get amazing amounts

of sunshine during the spring and summer months. I was so upset and angry to see this lovely home had recently been vandalized and now sits empty and abandoned for many months! What about a hostel/museum of New West’s extensive ¿lm and musical past and present? Too cool! Not only would this promote New Westminster tourism and create a few jobs as well as revenue for the city but perhaps the fruits and vegetables in the “Albert Street” garden could be used to feed the backpackers and lodgers at 321. This all would bene¿t this slightly “ghettoed” area and would be a far more colourful and creative answer to “gentrifying” the downtown area instead of the seemingly unending solution of highrise after highrise. Lastly, instead of promoting giant land development through months, if not years, of noise pollution and construction, why not use common sense for once and follow the old adage of “If it ain’t broke don’t ¿x it” (just add a little TLC!).

I would so love to see this happen for our city but I need to know if anyone else shares my sentiment as I’m also a single parent who has to work part time and ¿nd myself with only so much time to spare toward such passions. RETIRED TEACHERS BIG VOLUNTEERS As the contribution of volunteers is to be recognized during Volunteer Week, April 15 to 21, I believe it’s worth noting the contributions of retired teachers. During March and April 2011, the British Columbia Retired Teachers’ Association (BCRTA) conducted a survey to investigate the role of its retired members and their impact on communities as

volunteers. Even after retirement many educators were active in their communities, contributing their experience, energies and social skills as needed. The results revealed these volunteers donated an average of 31 hours per month. Some individuals reported they volunteer in as many as four different kinds of organizations. The top ¿ve categories included: community organizations and events, education, arts and culture, religion, and caregiving, which required the most hours per month per person. Volunteers make it possible for individuals and community events to carry on and ful¿l their goals. It is impossible to ascertain the dollar value of these volunteer activities which would be in the tens of millions. Scuba diving in azure blue water. Sleeping in a hammock beneath a lush tropical jungle canopy. Exploring Mayan temples. It sounds like a perfect vacation getaway. But for Nicole Dillon, it was her classroom. For seven weeks last year, Dillon attended Douglas Collegeâ€™s Âżeld school in Belize, studying anthropology, geography and sociology in a tropical paradise. It wasnâ€™t as debauched as it sounds, she says. Sure there were excursions to the beach, hikes into the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, climbs up the crumbling steps of ancient temples, and their hotel compound did have a pool; but the 19 students in her group also had to attend classes at Galen University in San Ignazio, write term papers and mid-term exams, attend workshops with local community leaders, participate in archeological conservation projects and endure Ă€ash Ă€oods and bugs of all sizes and description while camping in the jungle for three days. They also had to endure living in Third World conditions, including unreliable electricity, intermittent hot water and roads that were more dirt, mud and gravel than smooth pavement. It was, says Dillon, a life-changing experience. â€œI learned to give more, listen more and expect less,â€? says Dillon. â€œI developed as a student and as a person.â€? It also helped her Âżnd a focus to her studies.

Dillon says she was taking a melange of different courses without a Âżrm goal in mind when she happened upon a poster advertising the Âżeld school on a wall at Douglasâ€™ Coquitlam campus. While her eyes were enchanted by the images of ancient ruins and lush mangroves, her curiosity was piqued by the opportunity of earning nine credits in seven weeks in a completely foreign environment. With Âżnancial support from her family, and moral support from her friends she signed on. As a result of her experience, Dillon says sheâ€™s decided to concentrate on studying sociology and eventually become a teacher. She also learned how to better manage her time. After all, the quicker she was able to attend to her school obligations, the more time that left for taking advantage of the paradise all around her. â€œIâ€™m usually a procrastinator, but down there I had to use my time wisely,â€? says Dillon. â€œI still had to get work done and have time for fun activities.â€? Coping with the challenges of living and studying abroad has also given her the conÂżdence to begin dreaming of further foreign adventures, like an extended journey to southeast Asia. And, says Dillon, itâ€™s made her more tolerant and understanding. â€œPeople appreciate what they have,â€? says Dillon of the locals she met. â€œThey donâ€™t want anything from you except to be able to tell you their story. The institution had come under Âżre for its examination and grading practices at its partner institutions in Shanghai and Harbin. While the college conducted an internal report in 2010, an external one was done by Deloitte, a business-

New West cop helps save a life

New Westminster police are crediting one of their own in helping save a 65-year-old woman’s life last Saturday. An of¿cer and her recruit came across a stopped ambulance in the 200 block of Columbia Street with its emergency lights Àashing and the paramedics franticly opening compartments and pulling out a de¿brillator. During a transfer the patient had gone into cardiac arrest requiring both paramedics to help leaving no one to drive the ambulance. The constable was trained in CPR so she took over chest compressions while one of the paramedics drove to Royal Columbian Hospital and the recruit followed in the police car. The patient was revived just as they pulled into the parking lot and she was rushed into the emergency ward. Police say the woman is recovering.

Hani Lammam, vice-president of development and acquisitions for Cressey Development Group, says the company always keeps it in mind. One of the best ways to ensure an eco-friendly design is to build projects that will stand the test of time, Lammam says. “We put up buildings that will be around for 100 years,” he says, adding that reducing your environmental footprint is one of the best things a homeowner can do. He says that a multi-family development is more

sustainable than a single-family home, as it allows resources to be shared. One of the biggest energy-suckers in a home is the heating and cooling system, so Cressey always devotes time to making it energy-efficient. “We avoid electrical baseboard heating,” Lammam says. “We use heat pumps instead, because they can be shared within the building.” They also try to foster urban agriculture with large outdoor spaces so homeowners can grow their own food. “The Cressey kitchen has become a standard in our industry,” Lammam says. “But it’s what’s used in the kitchen that is important.”
