Skills on display The Skills Canada B.C. Competition, which highlights the abilities of students in the trades and technical programs, was held at Tradex on Wednesday. Some 500 students competed in 40 skilled trades, and eight locals collected medals. Gold medals were won by Danielle Nergaard (Abbotsford Collegiate) in automotive service and Doug Jarvos (Yale) for electrical wiring. They will be part of Team B.C. for the National Skills Contest in Edmonton from May 13 to 16. If they win gold at nationals, they advance to the World Skills Contest in Germany in 2013. Shaun TeBrinke (Abbotsford Collegiate) won silver for carpentry. There were several bronze medalists: In the 2D animation competition Ryan Kostuk and Elijah Baluyan (both Robert Bateman); hairstylist Charlene Wight (Abbotsford Collegiate); and in gear bots Odin Hong and Trenton Smalbrugge (both Yale).

Video helps capture thief Teen arrested Tuesday and faces charges Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Abbotsford Police say video footage of a young man stealing tools from a home garage and urinating on the floor was crucial in his arrest Tuesday afternoon. Const. Ian MacDonald said the 17-year-old suspect was identified by people who viewed the surveillance video, which the victim placed online, and by those who saw still images of him on posters placed in the neighbourhood. He was arrested as he was walking along Peardonville Road, and police then executed a search warrant of his home. There, they found dozens of tools that homeowner Dana Mosher had reported as stolen in the theft last Wednesday at his home on Clearview Crescent. MacDonald said

This video image has been altered because the suspect is a youth, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. police received several tips and viewed Facebook postings that named the teen, who lives only a few blocks from Mosher. “People who are fa-
miliar with him and saw the video were calling him out.” The video was compiled from footage that Mosher’s 15-yearold grandson helped
him retrieve from the surveillance camera installed in the garage. The footage indicated that the thief made three separate trips,
taking a few items each time and returning a few minutes later to grab more. On his last trip, the culprit urinated on the floor of the garage before loading items into his backpack. Mosher estimated that the total value of the stolen items was at least $5,000. Police returned all his tools late Tuesday evening. The only thing missing was a $20 stud finder. “I’m thrilled to death. I’m glad I got everything back, and I’m glad he’s in custody,” Mosher said. MacDonald said the teen has had about 50 previous interactions with police for petty crimes such as mischief and theft. He now faces break-andenter charges. He cannot be named because he is a youth whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Car, house bombing linked? Incidents occurred three months apart Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
Police say a recent car bombing in Abbotsford has possible links to a small explosion that occurred at a townhouse complex in December. Const. Ian MacDonald said police have not been able to rule out that the two incidents are connected. The most recent one took place on March 24, but details were released only this week. Police received calls at about 2 a.m. that a loud bang was heard in the 31600 block of Peardonville Road, in the parking lot of an apartment building. Neighbours said the noise sounded like either a gunshot or a blown electrical transformer, but patrol officers were unable to track down the source. About five hours later, a man called from the apartment complex to say the interior of his Honda Prelude had been burned. Investigators determined that a small makeshift explosive device
had been set off inside the vehicle. However, MacDonald said, because different people used the car, police have had difficulty determining the intended victim. He said the explosive device used is similar to one that was set off Dec. 31 at a townhouse unit in Kinsmen Creekside Estates at 33295 Maclure Rd. In that incident, the device was detonated in the patio area at the back of the unit, causing some minor damage to the wall. Three people were in the residence at the time, but nobody was injured. MacDonald said both cases involve several potential victims and some have connections to both addresses. Some have had “criminal, negative police-type associations” but MacDonald said there did not appear to be gang connections. An Abbotsford man who helped snare an impaired driver earlier this year received a police commendation on Tuesday. Owen Moore was recognized at the monthly police board meeting for his actions on Feb. 21 of this year. On that day at about 7 p.m., Moore was traveling west on Highway 1 when he observed an erratic driver. He decided to follow the vehicle along the freeway and as it exited at Whatcom Road. He called 911 on his cellphone, provided the licence plate of the vehicle and continued to follow the car as it swerved all over the road, hitting a median and some gas pumps at a service station. The car also travelled through several restaurant parking lots, at times in the wrong direction. Moore also witnessed the driver run a red light and a stop sign, narrowly miss-

The Youth Offender Act has to go, too many teens are committing adult crimes and they get away with it. When will the system ever learn? I am glad this kid was caught and that the guy got all of his tools back. I have been victimized so many times and no one has ever been caught. Car broken into, car stolen, house broken into, shed broken into twice and a near home invasion, which thankfully I woke up to. Time to change the system, instead of it being a criminal justice system how about making it a victims justice system, seems that the criminals have all the rights and we have none!

On Point Funny how we all have our own sense of order, or absence thereof. For instance, I live with two females who have highly developed concepts of order … in regard to certain things. My daughter’s school binders are precisely labelled, filed and for all I know, cross-referenced and indexed. Her homework scheduling is a matter of precise timing, and tactical and strategic planning. Her closet is colour-coded, and clothes are racked by style and season. Before that all seems too bizarre for a young teen, her room itself often resembles the aftermath of a terrorist bombing. My wife’s affairs are equally ordered. I mean her work and day-to-day affairs, not the other ones. Not that I’m suggesting for a second that there any of those. But if there were, I’m sure they’d be well organized, too. Which
would explain why I don’t know about them. Not that I’m inferring in any way that there is anything I ought to know about. I’m leaving that now, before I dig myself into a pit of domestic trouble so deep I can’t see daylight. Anyway, the point I’m trying to illustrate is that both of the fine women in my life are highly structured, keenly ordered individuals. My wife chases down crumbs in the kitchen with extreme prejudice. My daughter has her bathroom products arranged via a library decimal system. So… here’s the thing. How does that explain the Tupperware? And let’s include the cookware while we’re at it. First, a step back for a moment for context. We have a fair amount of Tupperware, not because I’m obsessed with the product, but because I use it a lot to store left-overs, lunches and easyto-prepare meals for our octogenarian moms. You need to know I am an orderly person as well, especially in the kitchen, which is my culinary domain. Mixing bowls in this drawer. Pots in that one. Pans and trays up there, gad-
gets and tools categorized, compartmentalized and placed perpendicular – here, here and here. The Tupperware goes into two cupboards. Meal-sized on the left, according to the colour of the lids. Medium containers on the shelf below. Big storage buckets on the bottom. On the right, condiment cups, yogurt containers, and

You need a particular piece of Tupperware, your can close you eyes, reach in and grab it. Precision. Continuity. The universe unfolding as it should. Until … one of the girls empties the dishwasher. Pots mixed with the mixing bowls. Kitchen tools akimbo in the handiest
drawer. Can opener in with the cheese slicer. Turkey baster next to the electric mixer whisks. A clear collapse of order. And then there’s the Tupperware… utter madness. Absolute chaos. Little with big. Big with medium. Lids hastily shelved like an exploded deck of cards. Precarious towers of Tupperware, bunged in whatever space is available, with the door quickly shut, creating a boobytrap of cascading tubs to be unleashed by the next person to seek a container. That is almost always me. I now approach the Tupperware cupboards as though they contain vials of nitroglycerine, or a rattlesnake. It doesn’t matter. Once the plastic landslide is unleashed, all that can be done is step back and watch. And then… try to restore some harmony in the universe. Little ones up on the left. Medium in the middle. Big on the bottom. It’s all so simple, don’t you see? It’s not just my house though. Sometimes, I look around and think, “The world has really got to get its Tuppeware in order.”

Re: A. Powell letter, “It’s about choice” in regard to lingerie football. Mr. Powell writes a very interesting letter about how Abbotsford should avoid trivial matters like lingerie football, and focus on bigger issues, because he argues “...it’s about the freedom of choice.” It is not that lingerie football is evil in itself, but we must ask a very important question. Why do people watch this sport? I would have to argue that it is lust and selfindulgence that are the root cause. This sport also enforces the negative view that girls have to look a certain way to be accepted. I agree with Mr. Powell when he says, “Stop and think about all the other moral issues that really do need addressing, such as the rise in crime in Abbotsford, shootings, drugs, grow-ops, rape.” These issues need to be addressed, but what are the underlying issues that start these
horrible crimes? In my opinion that is why lingerie football has become such a big issue in Abbotsford.

New library, new art
Abbotsford’s newest piece of art will be located in front of the public library being constructed as part of Abbotsford Collegiate Secondary. The piece will be created by Vancouver sculptor Bruce Voyce and consists of a long metal pole, ending in the tip of a pen and surrounded at the top by swirls of circular metal poles. On these swirls are three pages with the Shakespearean quote “This above all: to thine own self be true” printed on them. The quote is from Hamlet. At the base of the piece is a wheel that, when turned, moves the pages at the top in a circular motion. The cost will be approximately $40,000. The library is expected to be open in November 2012. A contest will soon be announced asking the public to help name the library, which will consists of 11,000 square feet of public space and 4,000 square foot of school library space.

Ball a finalist for prestigious prize BLG Award comes with $10,000 scholarship Gary AHUJA Black Press
Ben Ball is hoping to add one more award to his ever-expanding trophy case. In March, the 22-year-old senior setter for the Trinity Western Spartans men’s volleyball team capped off his university career by leading his team to a second straight CIS national championship. Ball overcame sickness at the tournament – he was confined to his hotel room bed between the quarter-finals and the semifinals – to win most valuable player honours. He was also the Canada West and the CIS player of the year. And on Wednesday morning, Ball was announced as a nominee for the BLG Awards, which recognize the top female and male athletes from CIS universities across the country. “I always hoped for (a season like this) but I never really knew that it would actually happen,” Ball said during a conference call announcing the nominees. “This season has been a dream season for all of us. “It was definitely a learning experience that finished well.” The Spartans lost just a single match in league play and playoffs this past season, compiling an overall record of 24-1 against their Canadian competition. As for what comes next for the graduating senior – who joined TWU after graduating from Abbotsford’s MEI Secondary – Ball said he’s not completely sure, but is planning
on winding down his playing days and getting into coaching. The other male nominees are quarterback Kyle Quinlan of the McMaster football team, and a pair of hockey players, centre Andrew Clark of Acadia and defenceman Marc-Andre Dorion of McGill. The female nominees are Tyson Beukeboom (St. Francis Xavier
rugby), Ann-Sophie Bettez (McGill hockey), Jacey Murphy (Guelph rugby) and Robyn Pendleton (UBC field hockey). The winners, one male and one female, will be announced on April 30 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary. It will be broadcast on TSN on May 26. Both winners receive a $10,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Webster, the Cascades’ women’s soccer captain the past two years, is graduating from UFV with a bachelor of arts, with a major in criminal justice. The PacWest basketball season doesn’t tip off for another six months, but Dave Martens feels he’s already ahead of the game. It was one year ago this week that Martens was announced as the new head coach of the Columbia Bible College men’s basketball team. But recruiting season was already well underway at that point, and Martens had to scramble put together a roster for the 2011-12 season. In the end, the youthful Bearcats took their lumps in the PacWest, posting a 1-15 record.
Heading into Martens’s sophomore campaign at the helm, the fact he’s been able to get a running start at recruiting season bodes well. This week, he secured commitments from a pair of promising perimeter players – Mackenzie Thompson of Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat Secondary, and Taylor Friesen out of Winnipeg’s Vincent Massey Collegiate. “We’re already leaps and bounds ahead of where we were last year,” said Martens, noting that the Bearcats are building on a solid core of returnees, led by all-star point guard Kevin Ford. Twisters gymnasts shine at provincials Athletes from Abbotsford’s Twisters Gymnastics Club turned in a series of sparkling results at the provincial championships in North Vancouver last weekend.
A trio of Twisters were crowned B.C. all-around champs in their respective divisions – Steven Chaplin (national youth), Carissa Gaspar (provincial level 4 novice) and Jeremy Gaspar
(provincial level 3, over 13). Additionally, Twisters women’s national open team finished in second place. Ten athletes also qualified to move on to next month’s elite

Koehn turns a Langley residence into a dream home kk from page 26 needs, both now and into the future, were integral to the design, this needed to be a home in the real sense of the word. “The bones of the house were basically good so it was a smooth transition,” Koehn says. “We were able to create what they were looking for within the new 4,400 square feet. The old house was not energy-efficient and none of the family had privacy. The difference for the family is life-changing.” The project took a year to complete. There were many different things at play in the renovation. One was Ben’s mobility, but the house was inefficient in many ways, and there was also a need for the new house to meet the needs of the family while the children were still at home and, if the parents wish, to age in place. Built in a style similar to houses seen in Whistler, the home now includes a great room, dining room and kitchen combination. “You get a great feeling of space, and the connection to the outside, through the three sets of French doors, flows naturally. There is a large patio with a pool and hot tub off the great room and no lip or step so Ben can come and go at will,” Koehn says. The house was stripped completely inside and out. The centre of the home was opened up to create the great room and dining room using a timber frame structure, creating soaring fourteen-foot ceilings. The garage stayed as it was but a new bedroom wing was added which gave the family two large bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry room. “Our climate is so rainy and grey for a lot of the year we maximized the opportunity

to bring in as much light as possible,” Koehn says. “We used distressed oak throughout the great room and dining room ... The kitchen works perfectly for everyone including Ben. There are a couple of areas especially for Ben; a lowered sink area and a bar fridge for cold snacks and at the end of the kitchen island there is a separate lower counter. We also placed the microwave lower so Ben can help himself.” There is a contained suite of around 400 square feet for Ben including a bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom vanity is lower, there is a jetted tub, and the separate shower is large with no sill. The whole floor of the bathroom has a special membrane under the tile which channels water into the drainage system. In addition the floor is electrically heated so any
water will dry up quickly. “On the ceiling there is a track system with a lift so Ben can go right from the bathroom through to his bed which again will add to independence,” Koehn says. “The bedroom is multipurpose with the bed, storage and then another little area where, when Ben gets older, they can put in a sofa and chairs; it’s set up with TV, so he can entertain his friends.

Building a home to suit the whole family

Electrical is a federally and provincially regulated profession. This means that it is illegal for anyone, other than a licensed electrical contractor, to provide and charge you for electrical installations, renovations and almost all repairs. Millwork: a quick update If you are considering a whole house renovation or would just like to make over a room or two, high-level millwork would make a stunning addition. Greening our schools and children April 22 is Earth Day, a national environmental event to foster and celebrate environmental respect, action and behaviour change that lessens our impact on the earth. Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News
When the Rotary Club of AbbotsfordMatsqui hosted its first annual Abbotsford Environmental Leadership Awards, one of the first organizations to be acknowledged was the Abbotsford school district. Under the leadership of Tom Louie, the director of facilities, and Rick Walker, manager of energy conservation, the district is taking an innovative approach to running energy-efficient schools. In the process, they hope to bring along a generation of students with a keen environmental conscience. Louie explains most school districts take advantage of Hydro and government energy conservation initiatives, getting grants to put in energy-efficient lighting and other projects. He calls this the “low hanging fruit.” But the Abbotsford district aims higher. The school district operates 2.5 million square feet of buildings, so even small savings at each classroom begin to add up

The district is doing large, highly visible, award-winning projects such as the computer lab at Abbotsford Middle School, which is completely off the province’s hydro grid and is powered by solar power and a wind turbine. When the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing, there is a stationary bike so that a stu-
dent can hop on and still power the computers using youthful kinetic energy. The district has also tried to harness students’ energy for conservation. Walker estimates it costs “about a buck an hour” to light a classroom. Harnessing that “multiplier effect” to save a few bucks at each school could have a big impact across 2.5 million square feet of facilities. An education program has kids turning out lights whenever a classroom is not in use, powering down their computers, and even training them to read the school hydro meter – so they can chart their conservation themselves. There is an incentive program that sees schools given $1,000 if they can drop their hydro use by five per cent, $2,000 for 10 per cent, and a big prize for the top school each year. The district gave its schools $45,000 in the first year. However, the resulting savings have been impressive – the district’s hydro usage has dropped 18 per cent over three years. It has been enough to get BC Hydro’s attention, and garnered the district an award. With a hydro budget of approximately $1.1 million, the district can share its savings with schools and still be ahead of the game. And, Louie points out, the kids are learning lessons that will serve them well outside of school.
“They take what they are learning back home,” he points out. He said without a great buy-in by teachers, the conservation program would not be possible. Louie and Walker have been at the forefront of turning the new Abbotsford Collegiate into a model green school. Rather than gas, it will be heated using groundwater from wells sunk on-site and a heat pump system. The same water pumps will be used to irrigate the playing fields. The building has been designed to maximize natural lighting with shafts through the school and reflective surfaces. Occupancy sensors will control light and air conditioning. There will be an interpretive sign system throughout the school to educate students as to the many energy-saving features. “This is a showcase school,” said Louie. “Rick and I call it an energy campus.” To do the project, Louie and Walker had to prove that it could be done for the same funding as a traditional school. Louie and Walker don’t appear to be socalled “tree hugger,” environmentalists who get stereotyped. They are both engineers, and approach conservation from that mindset. “It’s a business model,” said Louie. “It just makes good business sense – why not build a school that is more efficient?”
