Lake Country high school grad dinner/dance at The Grand BOBBI-SUE MENARD The graduates of George Elliot Secondary School will be going to The Grand hotel in Kelowna for their dinner dance for the second year in a row and a group of local businesses would like to see the event brought back to Lake Country.

GESS grads celebrate their achievements on several nights, with the dinner/dance (at The Grand), the Cap and Gown ceremony where the Dogwoods are handed out and a dry grad.

The primary reasons for moving the dinner/dance to The Grand is the diminishing number of volunteers to host the event at GESS, as well as capacity issues. A desire for a location that is a little more posh to commemorate the occasion has also been mentioned.

Marvin Farkas, president of the Lake Country Chamber of Commerce

and a Grad 2013 parent says the community can meet the main requirements to bring the grad dinner/dance back to GESS. “Certainly there is the professional and service capacity to host the event in Lake Country.”

Derek Lea, principal of GESS, says he is completely open to looking at bringing the dinner/dance back to GESS, especially if the event can deliver a great experience for the grads.

“There is a desire to create a send-off for the kids that they will enjoy. I think there is some historical pressure to always do better, but I don’t think it has gotten excessive.”

In advancing the idea to bring the dinner/dance back to GESS, Farkas worked with Shelli Clipperton of Nor-Val Rentals, Barb Boschert, owner of Sterling Events and Mario from the management team at Aspen Grove Golf Course. The team pre-

pared a quote for a full sit down menu and event plan at two different price points—either $16.95 or $26.95 per plate. Both options come in below stated budget costs for the event. The grads would enjoy their dinner options which could include prime rib.

Farkas is hopeful the school will see the possibilities of a great event at GESS. “The food we can have created and served in Lake Country is far superior to the general offering at The Grand.”

Capacity remains an issue. Lea says the event has gone overcapacity in recent years, but stated attendance numbers given to organizers showed no appreciable fluctuation in historic numbers when the event was held at GESS. “So long as we can accommodate numbers we can look at viable solutions,” he said.

Deb Butler, in her capacity as a par-

ent of a 2013 grad student at GESS, feels there is plenty of space to host a reasonable event closer to home.

“Numbers are realistically not an issue; we have former seating plans for 550 people.”

GESS tries to allow students three tickets each to the dinner/dance and for students who have more parents or close relatives who want to attend, every effort is made to accommodate them.

Lea has committed to a Grad 2012 parent meeting to happen in April.

Farkas is eagerly waiting to find out when that will happen.

The timeline for booking the event at The Grand is generally confirmed in May of the year prior to each event.

Should a viable solution be found the students will need to be consulted about their wishes over a location for their grad dinner/dance in 2013.

Wild and wooly JUDIE STEEVES As soon as the gate opened, the girls flooded out into the field, leaping into the air, off all four feet and running about like children.

Still furry with their heavy winter coats, nearly a dozen female alpacas—natives of the Chilean, Bolivian and Peruvian Andes—frolicked about the fenced pasture at Oyama Lake Alpaca Farm just as if they’d just been let loose from school.

Darlene Homenchuk and Jim Covington started the farm about 12 years ago and say they

adore the alpacas they’ve raised. “We’ve raised our lovely alpacas from birth, treated them all the same, and yet their personalities are all so different, just like children,� said Homenchuk.

Each has a favourite habit, like nuzzling a neck or offering kisses on the cheek, and each animal’s face is full of personality and very different from the others.

But, this is the last week this season they’ll be burdened with those thick, fuzzy coats.

Last weekend the shearer visited Oyama and each animal lost

about five pounds in fiber, which Homenchuk will spin into yarn.

That will be turned into a wide assortment of clothing and home decorating articles, all for sale at her on-farm gift gallery or online.

The shearer has a custom-made table for the alpacas, so he can carefully but quickly remove the long, thick fur from each animal. All that’s left when he’s finished is the characteristic topknot, a bushy tail, and perhaps some socks.

First, though, each animal had the dust and grass blown out of her thick coat. Once it’s sheared off, the fibre is prepared for spinning into yarn. Alpaca yarn is light, very warm and soft.

While the animals were sheared, they also had their toenails clipped and received their shots.

The shearing was open to the public and attracted plenty of spectators.

Noise steals peace, quiet and nerves

To the editor: The world is becoming more aware of noise pollution and how it affects mental and physical health.

Sound is vibrations which enter the body, decibels perceived as pleasant or unpleasant, safe or threatening. Sound is unpleasant or threatening when we perceive these vibrations as damaging to our total health and well being. Kelowna is becoming unpleasant and possibly unhealthy in regard to noise pollution, more and more each month, each year.

I pay my fair share of taxes, utilities, strata etc., to live here in a residence close to the lake. Basically I pay many dollars per day just to live—period.

I don’t need the extra stress from noise waking me up on a Sunday morning, or obtrusive noise

There is no reason why one individual who decides to use a chainsaw to trim his trees, or mow his lawn with a power mower should be allowed to disrupt an entire neighbourhood.

There are alternatives— use a quieter machine, ideally solar-powered and don’t do this work on a Sunday morning.

I’ve thought about all these things for years, it’s not an idea suddenly dawning on me.

Environmentalism for dummies D avid Suzuki has resigned as a director of his namesake foundation so it won’t be the target of federal government “attacks.”

This news is conveyed to me in a Globe and Mail report that is typically tilted in deference to “Canada’s most famous environmentalist.”

The usual assumptions are woven in: Suzuki is a saint. His every utterance is treated as scientific fact, even when it’s a left-wing political rant. The Conservative government is a front for Big Oil that has “attacked” environmental groups by reminding them that political activities are not eligible for charitable tax exemptions.

In recent years, the David Suzuki Foundation’s campaign focus has been noticeably in step with the large U.S. foundations that fund most of B.C.’s enviro-scare in-

Suzuki’s personal activities aren’t easily distinguished from those of his foundation, as was illustrated with his recent CBC documentary that demonized the “tar sands.”

Diseased fish were displayed, but natural contamination of the Athabasca River was glossed over. Aboriginal objections were highlighted, while local support and economic benefits were overlooked.

This isn’t science or charity. It’s tabloid journalism. Sensationalize, ignore facts that weaken the drama, play to people’s emotions. And he expects to be subsidized by the CBC and charitable tax exemptions as well?

This news comes as I finish reading Patrick Moore’s book, <I>Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout</ I>. I was one of many young fans who cheered as Moore, Bob Hunter and the other 1970s Greenpeace pioneers set out from Vancouver to disrupt Soviet nuclear testing, and then turned to the regime’s slaughter of whales.

In 1986, Moore split with Greenpeace and worked to set up a family chinook salmon farm.

He said Greenpeace opposed aquaculture because it destroys tropical mangrove swamps.

Tropical prawn farms have no rational connection with B.C., but

a global organization needs simple ideas that sell.

This approach was seen in an earlier 1980s campaign against chlorine in pulp mills. Greenpeace protests against dioxins and the herbicide 2,4,5-T were eventually dumbed down to oppos-

ing the use of chlorine in all industries, including production of PVC plastic.

Pulp mills developed a way to eliminate trace dioxins from their production, but that didn’t matter once Greenpeace had a global campaign going.

They still used chlorine, so they’re bad.

Speaking of chlorine, PCBs are polychlorinated biphenyls, a persistent background toxin.

Tests found levels three to five times higher in some wild salmon compared to farmed. But the wild salmon results were ignored in a 2004 study, used by Suzuki to depict farmed salmon as poisonous. His foundation’s salmon farm campaign quietly disappeared down the memory hole after its PCB claims were debunked.

Ancient flumes that transport wisdom through time

Jim Taylor village of Wallachin for years. I suspect that the wooden flumes winding along the red bluffs north of the TransCanada Highway have largely rotted away.

Once upon a time, Wallachin was a prosperous community composed mainly of British upper-class immigrants.

When war broke out in 1914 Wallachin’s young men responded en masse to the call of their home country.

Few came home.

Lacking men to work the orchards and main-

tain the flumes, Wallachin withered away.

I used to watch for those flumes as we drove past. They’re not necessary now, as governments provide systems that make water abundantly available to all.

But I still find myself fascinated by the way people worked together for the common good to build flumes.

It also seems to me that a flume makes a good metaphor for the sacred writings of any religion. They all try to convey wisdom from some distant source, through the aridity of intervening generations, to people who need that life-giving source now.

The Hindu Upanishads, Islam’s Qur’an, the Hebrew Torah, the Christian Gospels and Letters, all tap into the insights of long ago. The words that express those insights did not miraculously appear, fully formed, on pages. Hu-

mans worked together to inscribe those words onto some lasting medium—clay, parchment, paper, digital disks…

In that sense humans built the “flumes” that transport religious insights through time rather than distance.

But even the best flumes leak. Precious water seeps into the ground. Some spills over the edges, damaging the channel. Debris clogs ditches and impedes the flow.

Much of current biblical scholarship tries to remove debris that has fallen into the flume over time. It tries to clear the channel back to the original source.

As populations grow, flumes are asked to provide water for uses the original builders never imagined—lawns, hot tubs, dishwashers, grow ops. It does little good to insist that an old-time flume is good enough;

always has been, always will be.

So some seek additional sources—physics, biology, psychology— that can supplement the original flow.

Others refuse to rely

on traditional flumes any more. They turn to governments and corporations, to science and economics, to consumerism and even hedonism, to fulfill their deepest needs.

But the old flume is still there for those who are willing to expend the energy to trace it.

y daughter lives in a small cluster of houses in a little valley nestled into a fold in a series of arid hills cloaked in sagebrush. Above her house there’s a narrow, horizontal track etched into the slopes.

Investigation revealed that it had once been a flume.

Flume—an open irrigation channel constructed to let water to flow, by gravity, from a distant source to a location where it’s needed.

Some flumes are just ditches dug directly into the hillside; sometimes they’re built out of wood planks, on trestles, to get around cliffs or canyons.

Traditionally, flumes were always built by hand. Local farmers worked cooperatively to survey the route, build the flume itself and organize distribution of the precious water.

That’s because the long campaign by major environmental groups has devolved to “logging is bad.”

ample. Greenpeace, ForestEthics and the Sierra Club were bankrolled

by U.S. foundations to negotiate with the B.C. government, aboriginal people and forest companies for the 2006 Great Bear Rainforest agreement on the B.C. coast. Economic opportunity was delicately balanced against preservation and First Nations gained new control of

forests.

Now the big enviros have begun campaigning against their own deal.

As much as 50 per cent could still be logged, they say. It seems this particular green peace is bad for their business.

BOBBI-SUE MENARD Lake Country Business Connections has a new meeting space courtesy of TD CanadaTrust and is looking for a few new members to join their twice-monthly meetings.

The LCBC is dedicated to helping member businesses designing growth strategies and solving problems through mentorship within the group.

Cleo Ruffle leads the group and is a retired nurse with 46 years in the profession. Ruffle is a long-time resident of Oyama and says the LCBC is the perfect opportunity for business leaders to come together and support each other.

“The purpose of the group is to create strength, give encouragement, with self-development and accountability,” says Ruffle.

The LCBC started at the Lake Country Coffee House, then moved to the A&W for its second and fourth Wednesday morning of the month meetings. When TD CanadaTrust announced its community board room was available for groups to use, the LCBC leapt at the

Radio control airplane club open again

The Lake Country Museum has a new website with plenty of functionality and information at www.lakecountrymuseum.com.

Some of the new features on the website include a blog. The blog has postings covering a wide variety of topics including historical pieces on elements of Lake Country’s past. Recent historical topics are, Fur Traders & First Nations People of the Okanagan Valley, Life Histories, Historical Manuscripts of the District of Lake Country, and Murder on the S.S. Aberdeen.

The blog also includes community announcements related to the museum such as invitations to public events and meetings.

For more information about what the museum is up to, the three times yearly newsletter is also archived on the website.

A tour through the website also reveals an online historical timeline of Lake Country and a downloadable pdf document of Lake Country’s history. This highly readable historical narrative by Duane Thomson gives a good overview of Lake Country’s history and is the perfect information to bring with you on a visit to the museum.

The new website features a photo gallery.

Several family and area galleries have been collected by the museum and posted online.

The McCarthy Family, William Smith, David Madison and

John Stokes each have a collection to view.

The museum actively collects family photos any that document change in the community.

The Lake Country Museum would like to hear from you if you have any photos, either on your computer hard drive or in an album that show a slice of Lake Country from the past.

The new video gallery has four YouTube productions that show ranch development, sternwheelers and other stories.

Grasses well suited to Okanagan

y dear friend Charlie Faulkner passed away recently at Hospice House.

Charlie was born and raised in Kelowna graduating from Kelowna High School at the age of 17 after skipping a grade in elementary school.

He attended the University of British Columbia and played for a season in the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra before pursuing a long career in professional music as one of the most respected bass players in the business.

While at UBC he became friends with Bill Henderson who went on to form the Collectors and later Chilliwack.

Charlieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bands included Mother Tuckers Yellow Duck, The Charlie Falkner Trio and The Wildroot Orchestra. He also toured with wellknown artists such as Susan Jacks and Valdy.

He â&#x20AC;&#x153;retiredâ&#x20AC;? from

Don Burnett the Vancouver music scene in about 1994 and moved to Kelowna to care for his beautiful mother Kay Faulkner.

Within a year he picked up his bass to join a band I was involved with called the Breakers.

When this band split up Charlie was invited to play for respected Kelowna blues band Dog Skin Suit in which he continued playing for about 10 years.

A few years ago Charlie retired again and was a regular member of the Wednesday Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s group at Mission Creek Golf

Course. Although he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hit the ball far he usually hit it straight and was rarely frustrated with â&#x20AC;&#x153;this stupid gameâ&#x20AC;? as he put it.

Charlie was not one to complain even after he was diagnosed with his terminal illness a year ago and I am so fortunate to have spent so much quality time together.

His twin boys, George and Gordon, as well as his soulmate and angel Jean Gunderson, were all with him at Hospice House for his last weeks and he loved them dearly.

Charlie loved his garden. His mother and father gardened in the same soil for decades and being of the old school they introduced loads of manure and compost into it every year.

A few years ago Charlie and I were out working in the garden when a group of kindergarten aged children walked by while on an outing.

One of them pointed to Charlie and me and said â&#x20AC;&#x153;look, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s some old people.â&#x20AC;?

We laughed about this many times since.

Charlieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite thing to grow was hot peppers and he would always get the seeds germinated in mid-March in order to plant them out in mid-May after the danger of frost had waned.

A few years ago I wrote an article in Gardens West Magazine about favourite tools and I asked a few of my friends to tell me about theirs. Charlieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s was an old worn stirrup hoe that once belonged to his grandfather. Sixty odd years of use has worn the blade thin but it is just as strong and sharp as ever.

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to miss Charlie so much; he was like a brother to me.

ome 35 years ago my mother-in-law gave me my first ornamental grass. It was a pink-tinged variety of ribbon grass which I enjoyed but would not have in my garden now, as it is a spreader.

Fifteen years later I discovered blue oat grass, a beautiful, sun-loving, drought-tolerant grass that I will always grow.

From there I went on to grow about 28 varieties of ornamental grasses in my nursery, falling in love with this varied family of plants.

Many ornamental grasses are suited to our climate. One of the easiest plant groups to maintain, they simply need to be cut back to about four inches above ground in the spring before growth resumes. No other maintenance is needed all year.

They are generally pest and disease freeâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; and deer-proof.

Grass species fall into one of two categories. Cool season grasses begin growing in early spring and bloom in June

How can I tell if my older dog is just slowing down or if he is in pain?

As dogs age, we generally see changes in their behaviour. The playful ball-chasing of puppies gives way to adult dogs napping in the sun and with senior dogs, we accept even more slowing down. It is important to remember, however, that old age is not a disease. We need to differentiate between normal behaviour changes of aging dogs and abnormal behaviours that can be important signals of pain. These include: avoiding slippery ďŹ&#x201A;oor surfaces, difďŹ culty getting up or lying down, limping, reluctance to jump or go up stairs, sitting on one hip or the other with the rear legs off to one side, avoidance of petting or grooming and general crankiness. Osteoarthritis is a common cause of chronic pain in dogs although more acute injury is also possible. Often when we begin treating a dog for pain, owners will report their dog has much higher energy levels and has resumed activities previously abandoned. There are metabolic diseases, heart or lung problems which may also contribute to a change in energy level or behaviour. To determine the cause of suspected pain or behaviour change, a thorough physical exam is in order. As management of pain may require regular administration of medication, blood work before and throughout treatment is recommended to ensure it is safe to give to your dog.

I missed my medication today should I take two tomorrow?

This is almost always going to be a question to ask your pharmacist as the answer will depend on the medication and the condition being treated. Most often missed doses of medications should just be skipped. This applies mostly to medications taken on an ongoing basis for chronic conditions such as blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. There is rarely a situation where it is advisable to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;double upâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on a dose. Medications such as blood thinners, nitroglycerin products, and certain psychiatric drugs have special considerations with regards to timing. When these meds are missed it is more important to consult someone before either making up or skipping a dose. When you are prescribed a new drug it is a good idea to know how to deal with missed doses and if your particular medication is one that requires more attention if missed. UBCO art students present their annual year-end exhibition and gala event Students from UBCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Okanagan campus are presenting the popular week-long graduate exhibition this month.

The bachelor of fine arts year-end show is one of the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier annual art events, according to the university.

Twenty Twelve includes a wide-ranging collection of artwork created and exhibited by 34 emerging artists from the faculty of creative and critical studies.

The exhibitionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name, Twenty Twelve, is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the over-sensationalized Mayan doomsday prophecy for 2012. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Howâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that for timing?â&#x20AC;? said painter Marissa Brown, a participating visual arts student. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re graduating and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the end of the world.

Well, if thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the case, Twenty Twelve could be the last great art show on Earth.â&#x20AC;?

The variety of work embraces traditional art forms such as painting, printmaking and sculpture.

Also featured will be interactive sound and video displays, largescale photography, soft sculptures, illustrated journals, and screenprinted collage.

There is even an opportunity to engage with relational art in the form of a free-standing confession booth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Appropriate for such an exciting year, the BFA graduate exhibition leaves no medium behind,â&#x20AC;? Brown said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re showcasing art that reflects on the past, is grounded in the present and looks to the future.â&#x20AC;?

BFA students are tasked with producing Twenty Twelve, a largescale professional exhibition and gala event.

Last week, students started rearranging parts of the fine arts and health building, essentially converting it into a massive gallery space.

Twenty Twelve opened its doors for viewing on Tuesday, and will run until April 24, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

The exhibition galaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; which includes a student award ceremonyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;will start at 7 p.m. on April 21, with eclectic live music by The Darylectones, refreshments and complementary appetizers.

The upgrades include the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Bottom Wood Lake Road and Lodge Road, as well as upgrades along Lodge Road to the ninety degree turn near the south end of the Clearwater subdivision including 3.5 metre travel lanes and 1.5 metre bike lanes as well as a 2 metre sidewalk separated from the roadway by a bio-swale and a pedestrian bridge at Vernon Creek.

This $1.5 million capital project is part of the District of Lake Country’s longterm road improvement plans to provide an enhanced road network and safer pedestrian corridors.

While the project will provide an improved transportation network, there will be a period of inconvenience as traffic is re-routed around different parts of the project. The District’s contractor, assisted by District staff and consultants will be working to keep disruptions to a minimum and give stakeholders advance notice of impacts.

Detailed information about the project will made available through a number of sources including neighbourhood/public meetings, media announcements, and direct mail drop offs to immediately impacted residents and businesses.

Sweet Alibi presents a promising start with CD JENNIFER SMITH STAFF REPORTER

Solid vocal harmonies put the sugar in Sweet Alibi’s natural lilt, but it’s their open-minded approach to music that just might put this band on top.

The Winnipeg-based girl group has just released its first CD and its members hope it won’t be long until they’re playing music full-time, touring the world to play festivals and concerts from the United State to Europe—and they’ve roped some pretty big support thus far.

Their first CD, selftitled, is produced

by Juno award winner and former Crash Test Dummies member Mitch Dorge, who was playing with band member Michelle Anderson’s boyfriend when he

was introduced to their sound.

“We met him at a house concert for somebody’s birthday,” said Jessica Rae Ayre, who assembled Sweet Alibi out of a collection of friends.

“We got to talking about recording and within a few months started working with him.”

It didn’t take much to iron out the kinks in their harmonies. With four ears on the task, it was easy to hear what worked, what didn’t and how exactly to polish the trio’s unique style.

Rae Ayre comes from more of a blues/soul background, listening to the likes of Etta James, Coco Taylor and Adele, whom fans have been telling her fits her sound perfectly.

Still in what one might call the formative years, the CD showcases a lot of talent and an open-ended direction that should make their Okanagan concert interesting.

And while they do have fairly normal topics—relationships and the like—tunes like Phoebe’s Song demonstrate a creative capacity that’s inclusively sweet, sad and humorous.

The song is about Nielsen’s bird, Pheobe, and is best described as a bittersweet lullaby.

“How lucky am I to have lived in a world with something so sweet?” the girls croon.

Sadly it appears a window has been left open as the story unfolds.

Sweet Alibi plays Kelowna’s Minstrel Café on May 2 at 8 p.m.

American Reunion is worth reuniting for AMERICAN REUNION

W

hile gross humour is not really my favourite thing, I did laugh a few times at scenes and situations in this show which takes the American Pie and American Wedding franchise to a place where the original teens come together for a high school reunion.

Each of the characters, Jim Levenstein ( Jason Biggs), Oz (Chris Klein who had a role in When We Were Soldiers), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas from Rookie of the Year), Steve (Seann William Scott from Dude, Whereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s My Car and Finch (Eddie Kay Thomas) come back to what they think will be a look back and come away with so much more.

These two veteran actors give a real depth to the characters they play.

The boys are getting together for their high school reunion and each

is facing some sort of mid-life crisis. How they face their own particular bump in lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s road is what gives us the laughs and, disgusting jokes aside, there are some good laughs as the guys try to right a few wrongs and reach to the past if only for a moment.

Ever been to your own high school reunion? A bit strange arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t they? In some ways the years have sped by and it seems like only last week you were cramming for finals. In other ways, we find ourselves so changed that we hardly recognize that gawky teen who got dressed up for prom.

Would we want to go back and change anything? Well, this bunch changed a few things and in the process, grew up a bit. Oh they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t grow up completely (where would the fun be

in that?), but in amongst the nude scenes, the innuendos, the gross jokes and the blatant sex scenes, there were moments to which we all can relate, like the stale marriage, the career goals not quite met, the adventures put on hold. There is a bit of all of us in this, if only on a saner level.

Everyone gives a great performance and do stay to the very end, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one more scene and while the credits role, you see the cast as they were in 1999 and how they look now. Yeah, well good news, even movie stars age. They just have more expensive wrinkles than the rest of us.

I give this 2.5 stars.

The language is bad but it is worth the money.

BY: MISS STRUKOFF’S GR. ONE CLASS We went on a field trip to the Art Gallery and Rotary Center for the Arts in Kelowna. We were very excited as we got on the bus in the morning.

Our first stop was the Art Gallery. There, we learned about a painter named David Alexander. He paints landscapes, and likes to use different colours, brushwork and perspectives. All of David Alexander’s paintings were very detailed and we loved looking at all the colours he used! Then, we got to sketch our own landscapes and paint them using watercolour

After lunch, we headed to the Rotary Center where we got to practice our drama skills. We worked on moving our bodies to show emotion. Our favourite game was called “For you, for Me.” We absolutely loved the entire day, and learned a lot of great things. It was so much fun! We cannot wait to visit these two places again soon with our families!

BY: TELINA WALES AND GEORGIA MACLEAN – GRADE 3 In March our class had an Egg Drop Challenge. We had to make a structure that would help an egg not break after falling from our school roof.

Some eggs survived and some did not. The ones that did break had room for it to move around so when the egg hit the ground it broke. The ones that did not break did not have room for it to move.

Students who protected their egg with material around the egg were great and they all survived the fall. Some of the materials used included foam, tissue, bubble wrap, cloth, cotton balls, Styrofoam, parachutes and even umbrellas to help soften the fall.

The harder structures we used were cardboard, paper mâché, water bottles, Kleenex boxes, Timbit boxes and Happy Meal boxes. The Egg Drop Challenge was enjoyed by all of us.

A ‘roo visitor BY: NEIL MACPHERSON There are many types of kangaroos like Wallaroos and Bennetts Tree Kangaroos. Actually there are 63 different types. They live in two places in the world called Australia and New Zealand. There is a kangaroo farm her in Lake Country called Kangaroo Creek Farm on Hill Road. This is where I live. Kangaroos eat lettuce and horse food. When a kangaroo is born, it is the size of a jellybean! When they are about 60 months old, the newborn kangaroo takes its first look at the new world and can barely walk. It is very skinny. The picture is of me holding Sarah, a very young kangaroo born on our farm. The students in my class got to touch her and watch her jump back inside her cloth bag that my mom transported her in to our class.
