School busing changes loom Trustees tackle a shrinking budget BRENDA GOUGH
reporter@pqbnews.com
The board of school trustees for School District 69 (Qualicum) will be tackling its shrinking budget at a special meeting Wednesday night and in the meantime trustees have asked for a full and comprehensive review of student busing now that the bus garage has been moved from Qualicum Beach to Errington. The trustees hope that an up to date transportation study may come up with ways to accommodate French Immersion and even International students. Back in 2009 significant changes were made to the transportation system in the school district due to budget restraints and a complete re-working of the system. With Add your COMMENTS at the enforcement of new walk www.pqbnews.com limits and the removal of buses that had reached the end of their useful lives, hundreds of students who at one time took the bus were no longer eligible. French Immersion students were the ones most affected by the changes and to this day parents of those students are still fighting to get their busing back. See DISTRICT FACING, page A6
OCP back on track Sort of: City of Parksville estimate the plan won’t see any results until the fall AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Parksville’s two-year-old official community plan update process is back on track, but there still won’t be any concrete results until at least the fall. Urban Systems representatives updated Parksville council on the process since it was re-launched Feb. 6 after a several month delay. City council pressed them for concrete, measurable results recently. See PUBLIC INPUT, page A5
