Ardew employee injured by conveyor belt

Wednesday, a man was pulled into a conveyor belt at Ardew Wood Products and sustained serious injuries.

WorkSafe BC is investigating the case and was able to confirm that the man’s arm is in critical condition.

Merritt man auditions for ‘Dragons’ Den’

He’s a man with a several inventions, and one or two of them could be presented in June to “The Dragons” on the CBC series, ‘Dragons’ Den.’ While spending nearly 25 years in Hollywood “blowing things up,” Harvey Keys says he came up with a few ideas that could win over the pocketbooks of some of Canada’s wealthiest business people.

Keys auditioned for the CBC producers in Kamloops on March 22.

“I am expecting a phone

call any time now,” Keys said, noting he would ask the Dragons for $100,000.

“They finished auditions and they said they would let people know the following week.”

He said approximately 40 people lined up in Kamloops at Thompson Rivers University to pitch their ideas.

His invention aims to save people time in the morning while getting ready for their day. Instead of having to wipe away the thick steam that collects on a bathroom mirror during a shower, Keys’ invention eliminates the condensation within 10 seconds after flip-

ping a switch.

A purchaser would buy the entire unit and then screw it around their mirror, with two screws at the top and two at the bottom.

The unit is then plugged into an outlet that is located near the sink.

He said the technology can be moderated to fit the specifics of any mirror.

Even with an idea that could save people time getting ready in the morning, Keys said he hasn’t heard of anyone else inventing the product.

“I’ve been searching and searching, but it looks like I’m the only one who has come up with this,” he said.

“I got this idea from my exgirlfriend when she said she needed to do her makeup but couldn’t because of all the steam.

“This could be good for doing makeup or for shaving right out of the shower.”

Keys said he invented the mirror eight years ago but was unable to market it because his time was consumed by raising a family.

“It’s time now, because I have the time,” he said.

The device could also save on the energy it takes to run a fan to collect the steam while someone is in the shower.

“It could be a lot of sav-

ings,” he said.

But that isn’t the only invention Keys presented to several producers of the ‘Dragons’ Den’ when they arrived in Kamloops.

Keys flipped his bathroom cabinet around and revealed jewelry display holders that are made of wood and carved to look like a person’s head or hand. These are then decorated with jewelry.

“One of the producers even bought one of the necklaces that I was displaying,” he said.

‘Dragons’ Den’ producers travelled throughout Canada during the audition campaign.

HERALD OPINION Spotlight falls on Cummins The information age might have sped up B.C. voters’ mood swings, but the basic dynamic hasn’t changed since the days of Social Credit.

When familiarity breeds contempt, people vote to reject the familiar and see what happens.

Or as one radio talk show caller summed up his decision to climb on board the B.C. Conservative bandwagon, he knows two things about leader John Cummins: “He’s not Adrian Dix and he’s not Christy Clark.”

It’s been more 21 years since Gordon Wilson reshaped B.C. politics and launched the modern-day B.C. Liberal Party with a single quip in a leaders’ debate between a bickering Rita Johnston and Mike Harcourt. Cummins has about a year to show he’s earned his rising poll numbers, and to refute the conventional wisdom that he’s the best friend the NDP has had since Wilson put them in power and later joined them.

So let’s get to know Cummins a bit better. He’s 70, and has an 18-year record as a ReformAlliance-Conservative MP. His Ottawa days are mainly remembered for battling treaties and aboriginal-only fisheries, and for being the first Reform MP to reverse himself and take the MP pension. That pension pays him about $100,000 a year as he tries to build a second political career in B.C. Another legacy of Cummins’ federal record is his support for the harmonized sales tax. As he hastens to clarify, he supported Conservative legislation to enter into HST deals with any province, which Ontario and B.C. subsequently did.

Cummins said B.C. could have brought in the HST at a lower rate to reflect its broader reach, as Atlantic provinces did. But they

JADE SWARTZBERG Merritt HERALD The clock is ticking towards the City of Merritt’s deadline to apply for the right to continue collecting a two per cent tax on hotel accommodations; however, the City has yet to reach an agreement with the local hotel association.

Provincial regulations stipulate that in order to

apply to have the province collect the tax, the City needs a bylaw requesting the province to levy the tax on its behalf — which Merritt has already passed — as well as the indication of support from at least 51 per cent of the accommodation sector. The application also needs to include a business plan explaining how the funds will be administered.

The tax is intended to assist municipalities with funding tourism marketing programs and projects, and historically the hotel association has had complete control over those funds.

nity to review this arrangement.

While both the City of Merritt and the Merritt Hotel Association seem to agree that there needs to be a committee created to determine how the revenue from the tax will be used, the current contention is centred on which group will have the most weight when it comes to making decisions.

During a committee of the whole meeting, the hotel association proposed a DMO (destination marketing organization) that would include representation from the City and the hotel association as well as other local groups such as

the arts council, the Merritt and District Chamber of Commerce, the Walk of Stars etc. One of the hotel association’s demands, however, was that the group of hoteliers keep 51 per cent of the votes.

Arguing that the local hotels contribute the majority of funding, the group barely acknowledged the fact that the City contributes to the hoteliers’ businesses by bringing guests into town for various conventions.

The City of Merritt remains fully responsible for the administration of the funds regardless of whether they delegate the funds to a third party such as the hotel association. With this in

mind, it is quite reasonable that the city have an equal share of votes on a committee that would determine the use of the funds. Other groups would also contribute to the committee with ideas and with a portion of votes.

A situation where one group has a majority of votes seems unreasonable, except in a government where seats are won in a democratic process.

In any case, unless the two groups are able to reach an agreement soon, Merritt won’t be able to apply for the tax at all, which would only benefit the guests who would have slightly cheaper accommodation.

“We’re going to have to pay the price, I guess, in the sense that where it has been introduced, it has been shown to have grown business,” Cummins said. “Think tanks on both the left and the right have come to that conclusion.”

To me this beats the NDP’s crude coffee-shop populism that simply ignores HST benefits for small business and the poor.

Speaking of crude, Cummins further distinguishes himself from the B.C. Liberals by endorsing the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline to Kitimat.

He applauds the federal government for moving to place limits on submissions to federal environment hearings, citing the thousands of Internet sign-ups that have clogged the Northern Gateway hearings.

His record on aboriginal issues suggests he has little sympathy for territorial objections from First Nations, those with treaties or those without.

The April 19 by-elections in Port Moody-Coquitlam and Chilliwack-Hope offer a chance for the B.C. Conservatives to present policy alternatives. So far they’re against gas taxes, especially the carbon tax, against a second Metro Vancouver garbage incinerator, and in favour of fixing the “catch-and-release” justice system. These are the slogans that stand in for actual policies needed to govern.

Cummins will be going door to door in the by-elections, especially in ChilliwackHope, where he believes his upstart party has a shot at winning.

He offers a telling anecdote about the last time he was door-knocking in Port Moody, the premier’s former hometown.

The B.C. Liberals have suggested the B.C. Conservatives chose Christine Clarke as their candidate to capitalize on the premier’s name recognition. That wasn’t what Cummins and his previously unknown candidate found when they first started campaigning.

“She’d say “Hi, my name is Christine Clarke,” and the doors would close rather quickly,” Cummins said. Now she identifies herself as the B.C. Conservative candidate, then gives her name.

If you don’t remember the 1990’s in B.C., or if you can’t quite picture what life might be like under an NDP government, then you can get a preview by tuning in to the byelection in Port Moody and Coquitlam and the NDP candidate, former Port

Joe Trasolini wasn’t just taxing the wallets of his citizens when he was mayor; he was also taxing them in any other way imaginable to support his uncontrolled spending. City service fees rose nearly 125 per cent and fees at the Port Moody swim club went up more than 200 per cent.

Trasolini also spent nearly all of the City’s reserve funds — many millions of dollars — which had been carefully built up and saved through the prudent restraint of previous city councils.

If this is all starting to sound familiar then you probably lived through the NDP government of the 1990’s and you won’t want to see your kids or yourself forced to go through that again.

In short, we don’t need people like Joe Trasolini and the NDP, with a documented record of uncontrolled spending and a clear willingness to tax the people to the hilt, going to Victoria. We simply can’t afford it.

Extreme hard-hitting not needed in hockey Dear Editor: Response to Merritt News editorial “Vees lack toughness for RBC” The Canadian game of hockey is much more than crunching the opponents’ bodies into the boards to intimidate, bully, and otherwise injure, or doffing the gloves to satisfy an inferiority complex to intimidate.

The game is won on the basis of pucks in the net and the Penticton Vees have definately demonstrated finesse with the puck, and great defensive and fore-checking abilities, the way hockey should be played. This type of hockey brings spectator and fans to the rink — check out Penticton’s attendance record this season.

Gala set to feature Wright, deCarle

Merritt is gearing up to welcome Michelle Wright, Russell deCarle (of Prairie Oyster) and Wendell Ferguson as the host to this year’s Gala at the Merritt Civic Centre on June 2.

The annual party formerly known as the Merritt Walk of Stars Gala was rebranded this year to link directly to The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

“The theme around the Gala this year is celebrating that Hall of Fame,” said Robyn Grebliunas, communications specialist.

“We are very fortunate to have [Wright] coming in because she is the 2011 artist inductee into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.”

An industry night is scheduled the evening prior to the concert.

In past years, the event was hosted at the now defunct Iron Mountain Music, but it is tentatively scheduled at the Merritt Desert Inn, with a dinner

show and possibly a new artist showcase.

“Every year with the gala, we usually have an event on the Friday night because we have a lot of industry from around the province and as well as Canada that come to this event, so we like to have something going on,” Grebliunas said. “It’s also a ticketed event.”

On Sunday, June 3, the stars will participate in a celebrity golf tournament.

The event aims to brand Merritt further as the Country Music Capital of Canada and to showcase the town.

“We have received so many positive comments about our

event in past years,” said Ron Sanders, president of the Merritt Walk of Stars, which hosts the event.

He said the Walk of Stars will take a backseat to the Hall.

The Gala is now targeted to

representing the Country Music Hall of Fame, which opened in Merritt last summer.

“For the past eight years, the Gala has been a key branding event for our community,” Sanders said.

“This event attracts 300 people, 100 of which travel to the event and stay up to three days.”

Most of the guests represent the country music industry, such as the Canadian Country Music Association, BC Country Music

Association, National Music Foundation and various country music agencies throughout North America, Sanders noted.

Youth talent, such as Hayley, Livy Jeanne and local Cameron Snee are also scheduled to perform.

The Hall of Fame is located on Quilchena Avenue and is currently open only during special community events.

The Hall operates in partnership with the Canadian Country Music Association and the National Music Foundation.

Free computer classes offered to seniors

Literacy Merritt is scheduled to hold free computer lessons from tomorrow (Wednesday) to May 16, in an event dubbed “Cyber Seniors.”

The course is designed for seniors who are looking for an introduction to computer devices.

“Our main goal is to teach the seniors what they are looking for,” said co-ordinator Robyn Grebliunas.

“The common theme there, is they want to communicate with their family.”

She said seniors often receive technological gifts that they don’t know how to operate.

Gifts include cellphones, eReaders, laptops, digital cameras and iPods, for example.

“They want to know how to set up a Facebook account, or an email or they want to use the camera on their phone,” she said. “We really let the course go where it needs to go.”

She said the first course of this type was offered in 2009. Other

Composting can help reduce your household waste SPECIAL TO THE HERALD

What do gardeners, the local food movement and enthusiastic recyclers all have in common? Sounds like the start of a bad joke – in truth, the answer is that they are spending more time in their backyard being part of the compost revolution.

Composting can reduce your household waste by one-third to one-half, while creating organic matter, a critical part of healthy soil. Composting and gardening is an art tied to science and patience. There are as many ways to compost as there are to prune a tree or bake a cake.

Following some basic rules will lead to successful backyard composting.

The basic mix is called the C/N ratio.

C = carbon, N = nitrogen. Mix two to three parts carbon (dried

leaves, dried old grass, wood chips, shredded newspaper) and one part nitrogen (green yard waste, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds). These need to be added in alternate layers.

Keep in mind that grass clippings from lawns treated with chemical weed killers can kill the microbes in working compost and soil, as well as work their way into waterways. Please use caution when composting chemically-treated grass clippings.

Moisture and oxygen are both necessary. We strive for 65 per cent moisture in our compost piles at the Good Earth site.

A quick way to test your compost moisture level at home is to take some of your mixture and squeeze it in your hands, a drop or two of water should fall out.

If no water comes out, you probably need to

add water to the pile, or add more wet materials like grass and vegetable scraps. If it’s too wet, you will need to add more carbon-rich materials.

Getting air incorporated into the mix is equally important. It’s oxygen that feeds the microbes that break down the materials.

Adding air can be achieved by turning the compost pile over with a pitch fork and keeping it from compacting.

Your composter should have the ability to let air get into it from all sides.

Once the mix is made, it starts to heat up. You will want to be careful with weed seeds. Temperatures of 130-145 F need to be reached for a period of time, (several hours and up to a month for some seeds) to kill weed seeds. I prefer to keep weeds with mature seed heads out of my home compost mix. In com-

mercial composting, like what we do at The Good Earth site, the temperatures stay this hot for upwards of six months, virtually eliminating seeds.

My partner teases me that I am giving away trade secrets and if everyone knows how to backyard compost, they won’t need to buy our commercial compost (Good Earth). I believe in the principle of abundance, and the more we share the better off the world will be. And besides, composting can be tricky. Not all of us have patience and time to fuss around making the perfect mix, so here is one more ultimate tip: Use Good Earth compost to kick start your own compost.

Layer it between your carbon and nitrogen additions. Because it has good composting microbes, it will help to get your compost working. The other thing is,

once you start to use compost you’ll love how your garden responds.

You may find out that you can’t possibly make enough in your backyard for all your needs.

Reduce: When mushroom farmers use agricultural byproducts they reduce the volume of wastes that, otherwise, may contaminate the environment. If it wasn’t for the mushroom farmers, these byproducts might be burned or sent to landfills.

Reuse: After the mushrooms have been harvested, the spent mushroom substrate is removed from the growing rooms, sterilized, and sold to landscapers, market gardeners, orchards, flower growers, parks and gardeners as a valuable soil fertilizer/conditioner.

Every year, mushroom growers in Canada recycle at least 245,000 tons of wheat straw, 4,500 tons of stable bedding and 128,000 tons of poultry litter to grow white button, brown and portabella mushrooms. Mushroom farmers also use a lot of water, not only in the composting process, but to clean and wash the mushroom growing and packing rooms.

Most of that water is captured and recycled during the composting process. Any water that is released to the environment is purified

Centennials hand out the hardware A packed house of close to 150 fans, friends and family members filled the Legion Hall last Thursday night for the Merritt Centennials’ annual awards night and farewell banquet. Head coach Luke Pierce called the 2011-12 season the best one he has experienced as a coach, and this year’s Cents’ team a truly outstanding group of individuals.

The Merritt Centennials’ Tyler Martin was chosen the Most Improved Player for the 2011-12 season. The 18-year-old rookie from Port Coquitlam, B.C. demonstrated his versatility by suiting up as both a defenseman and as a forward when needed. In 47 regular season games, Martin recorded one goal and seven assists for eight points, along with 20 penalty minutes.

Second-year Centennial Brent Fletcher was the winner of the Leadership and Ability Award for the regular season, and was selected the MVP of the playoffs. The 19-year-old centre from New Westminster, B.C. had nine goals and twelve assists for 21 points in 58 games during the regular season, and an additional three goals and three assists in the playoffs.

One of the fastest skaters and most dynamic players in the BCHL this past season, 17-year-old Brendan Lamont was chosen the Merritt Centennials’ Most Promising Player. The native of Langley, B.C. played all 60 regular season games, scoring four goals and adding 11 assists for 15 points in his rookie year.

Centennials’ captain Evan Stack, from Calgary, Alberta, led by example both on and off the ice. The 20-year-old graduating player not only had the most game-winning goals for his team, but was chosen the Cents’ Most Valuable Player for the 2011-12 season. In 59 regular season games, he tallied a team-high 32 goals and 29 assists for 61 points.

The Merritt Centennials have seven graduating players this year.
