Raising funds for dry grad event Tammy Caruso Gazette

Saturday’s dry-grad fundraiser went off without a hitch, collecting nearly $1000 in bottles from local Cowichan Lake residents.

Julie Foster, dry-grad coordinator says the grads still have many fundraising activities planned to raise money before they head out from June 28 to June 30 to go white water rafting near Hell’s Gate in the Fraser Canyon on the mainland.

Volunteers and grad students attended Saturday’s event to help drive and collect from all areas in and surrounding Lake Cowichan.

Currently, there is a chicken sale fundraiser happening as well. Order forms are available through the grads or at Lake Cowichan Secondary School and are due in by April 21.

A grad car wash is planned for May 4 at the old Petro-Can gas station at the crossing of North and South Shore Roads. Country Grocer has given the task of the set-up and take-down for Lake Days to the grads along with a donation of $500. You will see the grads selling hotdogs during Lake Days as well for additional fundraising.

Recognize it, report it, stop it Tammy Caruso Gazette

Local Honeymoon Bay resident Sharon-Ann Dube has been the victim of a recent phone scam involving her computer. She received a phone call from a man who claimed that he was from the Windows-support team and that they had been receiving error reports from her computer.

Her computer had been quite slow lately so she was somewhat convinced that what he was saying was true. He had her sit down at her computer and walked her through steps to show her the infected areas. He then took over her computer with his mouse and continued showing her places within her system that were apparently “damaged.”

It was at that point during the conversation that he told her she needed to purchase a protection plan. There were three categories of antivirus software he described to her ranging from $49.95 to $169.95 and he explained that they could be purchased with a credit card.

Dube became suspicious at this point and asked him if he was trying to sell her something like Norton. He explained that no, he was not and again that he was calling from Windows support and it was necessary for her to purchase this in order to protect her computer from further damage.

Dube told him that she was a senior and didn’t have that kind of money but asked if he would phone her back in a few hours and she would try to round something up to help pay for this.

After hanging up the phone, she phoned the local computer shop and explained to the owner what happened during the course of the phone call. When she told him that he had taken over her computer he advised her to turn her computer off immediately. The computer store owner said he had others come in with similar scams. Dube brought her computer to him and he ¿xed it. Luckily, not much damage was done as she didn’t waste time investigating the validity of the phone

Dube reported the scam to the RCMP as well. Although there is not much the RCMP can do about phone scams such as this, they provided Dube with the phone number for the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Some people can feel embarrassed when they are victim to scams, but don’t be. It happens to many people. “It was a lesson learned and now I need to pass the info on.” says Dube.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is a forum of people who help people recognize, report, and stop fraud. New scams are being created every day and can lead to great loss for the people being deceived by them. Be on guard when receiving phone calls that seem suspicious.

Thoughts For Your Penny

While the news of the penny’s demise came as a surprise to many during the federal budget, most folks knew that its days were numbered.

At a cost of 1.6 cents per penny to produce, it was the only currency in the country that was costing more to make than it was worth.

There may be no penny in our future, but it was an important part of our history. Who doesn’t remember shaking their piggy bank, trying to ¿gure how much money you would have when all those pennies were added up. How about that science experiment in grade school where we dropped the penny into a glass of cola to watch what would happen. It was only corrosion at work, but for a young Einstein it was something to behold.

For those of you who are wondering what to do with your now valueless coins, may we suggest a contribution to the Nichole Stock Penny Drive, which, in light of the current penny situation may have a record year for donations. This might be the last year for the penny drive as we know it. Perhaps it will be known as the Nichole Nickel Drive next year.

I understand the reasons for the elimination of the penny, and am sure it is the right thing to do, but what am I supposed to do with my lucky penny?

Minor Hockey Is Major League At The Lake The minor hockey season is over for another year, and what a year it was for our local association.

Teams from the Cowichan Lake area participated in many out of town tournaments with many of those teams bringing home team medals and individual awards. While the purpose of minor hockey remains having fun, learning the basics and the comradeship that is a team sport, it is nice to see a smaller association like Lake Cowichan can compete with the larger districts in the league. Lake Cowichan and District Minor Hockey handed out their awards on Sunday afternoon in a packed Centennial Hall where family and friends were on hand to share in the accomplishments of this years teams, players, coaches and managers. It was obvious that we have a great bunch of dedicated young hockey players who are having a lot of fun while learning the game and adults who are committed to providing the necessary leadership that is required to provide an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Congratulation to everyone involved with the local Minor Hockey association, you are providing lasting memories to kids who are having a great time playing the game they love.

Rock tour to promote youth jobs BC Bureau

The B.C. government is rolling out a rock-themed road show to encourage young people to ¿nd training and work.

The Jobfest tour has all the trappings of a concert tour, including t-shirts, souvenir drumsticks and guitar picks, and two inÀatable tents that look like giant ampli¿ers. Stops in 50 B.C. communities will include a rock band, local community performers and speakers, with the tents serving as mobile career resource centres.

Flushing for fresh water Town of Lake Cowichan employees Kelly Bergstrom and Bob Elliot ,from left, were busy flushing the water mains on Tuesday, March 27. Originally scheduled to have the job completed in March, the recent cooler weather has put them behind as they can’t do this type of work when it is cold.

The colder weather means the fittings may be frozen and can crack when being opened, as well as the water being flushed onto the street may freeze, causing a slippery and dangerous situation for drivers. The water has a chemical mixed with it before going into a defuser mounted on the back of the truck and released onto the street.

The chemical dissipates the Chlorine that is in the Town water before it enters the storm systems and ends up at the final receiving fresh water which could be the river or the lake. Most of the chlorine would have evaporated naturally as the water flowed through the system, but if the hydrant is too close to the receiving water, the chemical will ensure the chlorine is completely gone before the flushed water enters the fresh water system.

Lake Bloomers ready to sell plants Members of the Lake Bloomers are excited to be involved in local upcoming events such as the annual Country Grocer Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, April 14.

There we will have both indoor and outdoor plants for sale, memberships ($10/year), a draw and peruse our garden periodicals and scrapbooks. An experienced local gardener will be on hand to answer questions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Heritage Days, Saturday, May 19 we will be holding a plant sale behind the Info Centre in Saywell Park beside the Communities in Bloom hanging basket sale.

Outdoor plants will be featured for this sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Again, our garden expert will be there along with local gardening information.

Penny Repesse is the coordinator for the May 19 event and asks that anyone who has plants that they would like to donate to email her at repesse@shaw.ca. Plants should be labeled so we know what we are getting and transplanted ahead of time for good root growth.

April 11 is our next scheduled meeting at the Catholic Church on Fern Road at 1p.m. Brooke and Rayanne from Marigold Nurseries will be our guest speakers and Brenda Morrison, Earth Mother Quality Herbs, will be our guest market vendor.

All our meetings will be scheduled for the second Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. unless otherwise noti¿ed. From June to September instead of meetings we have local garden and park tours and some are further a¿eld.

In June we plan to attend the Queen’s Jubilee event at Government House in Victoria and enjoy the fabulous gardens they have there.

Grade 12’s big relief in sight The time has come to get ready for the future.

The soon to be graduates of Lake Cowichan Secondary School have ¿nished preparing Gilbert for their graduaLewis tion. For the past few months the Grade 12 students have been picking up their grades for scholarships and universities. There are 62 scholarships that have been presented to them with many more available on-line. That’s over $45,000 in scholarships.

A couple of the scholarships that were offered to the students were BPO Elks of Lake Cowichan Bursary, that goes to a student pursuing a forestry related career; Lake Cowichan Royal Canadian Legion Scholarship, which is given to a student who is the child or grandchild of a veteran, Canadian Forces or legion member; Mary Hofmeister Bursary, which is awarded

to a graduating student who will be continuing studies in the performing arts; Town of Lake Cowichan Scholarship, which is offered to a student who is entering programs empathizing a career in local government and business.

The grads who left their scholarship applications until the last week, well they had a stressful week. Last Friday, March 30, was the last day for the students to have their scholarship applications handed in. “I feel like I’m improving in my academics, and the hard work pays off when you apply for the scholarships,� said Grade 12 student Amber Bell. “I feel like a big weight has just been lifted off of my shoulders, and I’m getting excited for when I graduate!� said Grade 12 student Jennifer Thompson.

Now, as graduation is just around the corner, the graduating students start to get excited and anxious for what is waiting for them in the future. With a big relief that the scholarships and applications for universities are done, next on their list is keeping their grades up, staying on top of work, and when the time comes, saying good-bye to LCSS.

Charlie Reid was a well-loved and respected Industrial Arts (woodwork) teacher at Lake Cowichan High School from 1947 until he took retirement many years later. He died on

A lasting memory of Charlie, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;shop teacherâ&#x20AC;? took place in the spring of 1977 in the intensive care unit of Cowichan District Hospital. He had arrived by ambulance and was apparently having a heart attack. Above his bed the heart monitor that was attached to him had stopped, alerting the emergency team of nurses and doctors that his heart had stopped beating.

After several minutes of upheaval, loud voices and organized medical chaos, the team managed to revive and stabilize the patient. His heart was once again showing a steady rhythm. Watching the frightening scenario from my bed across the room, I crossed my Âżngers (for good luck) and silently cheered for Charlie, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the shop teacher.â&#x20AC;?

and waiting until I thought a sufÂżcient amount of time had lapsed (although I had no idea what a sufÂżcient amount of time might be before visiting a person who had just survived a heart attack), I slipped out my bed and tiptoed over to the very peaceful, but very sick, Charlie.

I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know Mr. Reid very well because I never took any of his classes (this was before the days that girls â&#x20AC;&#x153;were allowedâ&#x20AC;? to take Industrial Arts classes) but based on the fact that we were both held captive in the same scary place, we immediately became best friends.

One day, I noticed that my new hospitalbestfriend Charlie was missing from his bed (odd I thought, when just three days prior we had nearly lost him). During a short trek around the ICU to look for Charlie, I noticed a head peeking out from behind a closet door window. I got the distinct impression that it was Charlie.

He appeared to be hiding. Upon closer inspection through the small window, I saw that Charlie and a fellow patient, whose bed was beside Charlieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, were hiding from the nurses while sharing a cigarette. With a NO SMOKING rule in effect in the ICU, Charlie and his cohort feared being found out. The fact that they had both survived serious heart attacks in the past few days and were now doing something that could cause another attack, didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem to be of any concern whatsoever to the men.

When he realized that I had seen him, Charlie quietly opened the door, just a crack, and whispered that I shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tell the nurses what they were up to. And under no circumstances was I to tell his wife Chris! Although it was a useless effort, I implored the men not to smoke.

My advice went through one ear and out the other, for I caught them back at it the next day although they had promised me (under duress) that they would stop. I resisted tattle tailing on Charlie, who by now was my bosom pal, but I secretly hoped that the often-stern no-nonsense ICU nurses would smell the smoke and chastise the men. I later learned that it was a common occurrence in ICU that smokers who had just days before survived heart attacks, could hardly wait until they had the strength to get out of their hospital bed and sneak away for a smoke.

A day or two later Chris, Charlieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wife, came to visit him. The sweet lady that she was, she had brought a little parcel for me that Charlie had especially asked her to buy. Upon opening the parcel I was stunned to see a very lovely and expensive bottle of perfume; trade name Charlie.

As I thanked them Charlie gave me a secret wink as if to say, thanks for not telling on me.

Although Charlie and Chris are long since gone, I still to this day think of Charlie when I see a bottle of Charlie perfume in a store.

Bylaw 262-1975 will be repealed as it is replaced by the new Board of Variance Bylaw 915-2012. The purpose of this updated bylaw is to ensure where council has adopted a zoning bylaw there shall be established a bylaw Board of Variance.

The Board of Variance will determine any appeals with respect to issues contained in section 901 and 902 of the Local Government Act, previously known as the Municipal Act. The board will govern whether compliance with certain requirements of a zoning bylaw would cause suffering. If so, they may grant a minor variance providing conÀict will not arise with the local government policies.

Three members will be appointed by council but they cannot be a member of council or of the Advisory Planning Committee and cannot be an employee or of¿cer of the Town. There is no remuneration for the appointed members, but related expenses for conduct of of¿cial duties will be reimbursed. Appointment of these members will exist for a maximum of a three year term.

New bylaw to update Board of Variance Tammy Caruso Gazette

A new bylaw is underway with the Town of Lake Cowichan to update and implement a new Board of Variance. The board is an appeal body that hears and decides upon appeals regarding zoning, development, permits, signage, tree by-laws and parking matters.

Any rezoning bylaw must be voted on and considered on four separate occasions to become adopted. The bylaw was given its ¿rst, second and third reading at the last regular council meeting and will be adopted at the next regular council meeting in April.

Joey Janzen scored two goals and Kevin Stewart added one to give the local team a 3 to 1 lead before Comox came back with two goals to tie the game. Kevin Stewart scored the winning goal with only 1:44 left on the clock. Shauna Johel walked away with the Digger award. It was Gold in the end.

They began the tourney with a 5-5 tie against Comox Preferred WoodÂżnishing.

Goal scorers were Max Baird and Kevin Stewart with two, and Aaron Croteau picking up a single. Max Baird walked away with the Digger award.

Lakers won the second game 7-4 with Joey Janzen picking up the hat trick, Aaron Croteau with two and singles going to Brooklynn Brown and Kevin Stewart. Joey Janzen won the Digger award.

Kindergarten students at Palsson Elementary hosted a Nursery Rhyme Tea served with cookies for their parents on Friday, March 30.

The Tea was a success with many parents snapping pictures and enjoying the musical bells and nursery rhyme acts put on by the children. Teacher, Laurie Sheftel, said she has done this sort of thing before in the past and has always had success. It is a way for the students to show their parents what they are learning in the class and for their parents to

interact with their children in an educational setting.

“The children get to choose which nursery rhymes they would like to do so that makes it fun,” says Sheftel.

Along with the more recognized nursery rhymes that we all know from our own school days, the children also read out some comical versions of the rhymes which brought about laughter from all those in attendance.

Dressed the part, the children undeniably made their parents very proud and even Mrs. Sheftel’s husband, David, was there to play a pirate in the place of an absent student for one of the rhymes.

Trades students preparing today for their tomorrow

Tammy Caruso Gazette Is your child in Grades 10 to 12? You may not know this, but Lake Cowichan Secondary School offers two programs in conjunction with Vancouver Island University in Duncan, the Industry Trade Association, and Camosun College in Victoria, which will help your high school student get a jump start on their career.

The ¿rst program is a provincial career program called Secondary School Apprenticeship. This program brings together students and potential employers through handson training in trade careers.

If your child is already working under the supervision of a quali¿ed [Red-Seal] journeyman supervisor, they are eligible to register with the Industry Trade Association to earn credits towards graduation, as well as get started on an apprenticeship while still in school. However, they don’t have to already be working for someone in trades, they can start today by talking to their school counselors.

Eligibility requirements for the SSA program are that students must be paid, work in a recognized trade and with a quali¿ed tradesperson, complete the required registration form, and have the employer track their

work-based hours. Not only will students be earning their own money, but this program advances them in their career exponentially.

Another “bonus” worth mentioning is that if the student maintains a C+ average, they are awarded a $1000 scholarship to assist in purchasing tools and so on for their chosen trade.

The second program is called Accelerated Credit Enrollment in Industry Training or ACE-IT. This program is an industry training program done at the high school, and like the SSA program, it offers both graduation credits as well as a head start towards completion of an apprentice program. Students that complete either one or both of the above programs are more likely to be successful in ¿nding post high school employment.

Students can enroll in both the ACE-IT and the SSA program and are well on their way to the completion of their ¿rst year of post-secondary school by the time they graduate.

Teachers and counselors are getting the word out to their students in as many ways as they can. These programs are included in the daily announcements, and they have grade wide meetings to discuss career options

and opportunities through these programs.

“The whole career program at LCSS is important for the community and for our kids,” says student councillor, Pat Biello. LCSS’s career clerk, Jan Devana, also works with the kids to get started on these programs.

“Parents, if your kids are going into Grade 10 or 11, this is the time to start looking into these programs.” says Devana.

Many local businesses in the Lake Cowichan area have already been stepping up to the plate to help advance our students in their careers. WFO, Daly’s, Country Grocer, Link Hair Salon, Remedy Hair Salon, Duncan Iron Works, Western Star, Lakeshore Dental, Indora Electric, and Hartshorn Mechanical are just some of noteworthy business participating and opening up their doors to students.

Currently LCSS has three kids in Chemainus doing carpentry, one male student at Camosun College in Victoria doing the mechanical foundations, which is a dual credit course, and four female students in the hair dressing program in Duncan, which is a one-year course and provides 42 credits towards graduation. Considering students that are between Grades 10-12 need only 80 credits to graduate, one can see how far these programs can actually take them.

Alongside credits and experience, because these kids are still in high school, these programs are completely sponsored and paid for by Camosun College and Vancouver Island University.

“There are girls that have graduated and applied to get into the hair dressing program and there is a two year wait list,” says Biello, “and here are four girls already in it because they are high school students, and its free.” he adds.

LCSS is thankful to the local area businesses that have facilitated our children in succeeding in the trades industry and would also like to encourage other businesses to get involved. This is a time when businesses are working with limited resources so it can be dif¿cult to do, however, this program is invaluable to the future of our students, and therefore, Lake Cowichan.

Dual credit offerings for the current school year are Carpentry, Culinary Arts, Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning/Refrigeration, Health Care Assistant, Auto Service Tech, Heavy Duty Mechanic, and Hair Dressing. There are a limited number of seats available in the programs and an admission process must be followed.

Getting ready to start school Tammy Caruso Gazette As parents, we play a vital role in our children’s educational development. Beginning kindergarten can be a frightening step in a child’s life, but not with the right tools.

As your young ones approach this milestone in their life, help them get ready through the support of early learning education offered through programs that have a strategic focus on the development of a preschooler.

Ready, Set, Learn’s Teddy Bear’s Picnic will be coming to Palsson Elementary on April 4 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. for children ages three to six. The 2012 program will include language, play, math, reading, story, music, and snack centres to help your preschooler better prepare for their entry to school.

The early years learning initiative is brought to us through the Ministry of Education who funds the Ready, Set, Learn programs for host schools with a communal

vision for early learning. Children attending will learn through playing activities and parents will have the opportunity to ¿nd out more about the program and other services offered by our local School District.

This program covers a variety of aspects such as talking, books, numbers, feelings, socializing, playing, TV and electronic media, vision and hearing, healthy teeth, physical activity, healthy snacks and more. It helps to contribute to your children’s learning success in school. Building con¿dence, language development, and learning how to follow instructions and routines are just some of the positive outcomes this program has to offer.

U-Haul rental truck gets a fill-up at a local gas station last week.

“I don’t recall ever getting into that business (of where the trucks were parked),” said Juch. “We just wanted the business to be licensed.”

In November of 2011, Vomacka received a letter from the town of¿cially informing them that they were required to obtain a separate business licence for the U-Haul.

“I called my area manager and asked about the separate business licence and he said that no other U-Haul that he knew of, had to pay for a separate licence,” said Vomacka.

A U-Haul spokesperson stated that the necessity of a separate licence is determined by local bylaws in each city and town.

The situation heated up when Vomacka was informed by the Town that if a separate business licence was not purchased for the U-Haul operation by March 1st of 2012, Lake Cowichan Furniture would be ¿ned $100 per day, for each day the U-Haul operated without a valid business licence.

“A separate licence is required for each business operation, even if it’s conducted

by the same business entity or at the same address,” said Town of Lake Cowichan Bylaw Of¿cer, Deborah Juch. “ This was clearly a separate business activity and required a separate licence.”

The question of when a separate licence is required is de¿nitely open to interpretation. For neighbouring business owner Hans Van Den Heuvel, owner of Han’s Butcher Shop, the town’s stand was frustrating. In his view, it was far better to look out his window and see a few clean, well maintained U-Haul trucks, than to look out at the poorly maintained property directly opposite his shop.

“How is it that the bylaw of¿cer is able to chase a business out of town in a matter of months with the threat of $100 a day ¿nes and they can do nothing about the derelict buildings around here?” asked Van Den Heuvel.

Lake Cowichan bylaw 727-2001 states “that no owner or occupier of real property shall allow such property to become or remain unsightly”.

“Issues with standards of property maintenance are rare,” said Juch. “Where there is not an accumulation of rubbish or

Rolli Gunderson Gazette Loretta Warren and John Clark — two of the teachers shown in the photograph — went on to spend the remainder of their teaching careers here in Lake Cowichan, where they both still reside.

Loretta spent years teaching kindergarten at A. B. Greenwell School.

John Clark taught at several of the area schools including Honeymoon Bay, and was principal of A. B. Greenwell and of Lake Cowichan Secondary School.

Louis Bizco was a popular music and band teacher at LCSS for manyyears. Amato Fantillo also spent many years teaching in local schools.

Long-time Lake Cowichan teacher Barbara Speer (the late) passed away several years ago.

The elementary school principal Len Plater (sitting in middle of picture) and his family spent close to 20 years in Lake Cowichan. He, his wife Mary and newborn son Teddy, arrived at the Lake in 1949 after Len accepted the elementary principal position, which was offered to him by high school principal, John Saywell.

An article in Family Trees by the Plater family says that upon their arrival the family took up residence in a “near-new bungalow in the 100 Houses”, which they later bought. After the birth of two more children, Marion and Roy, the family purchased a bigger home on the river near the Duck Pond.

Principal Plater was a force to be reckoned with in the school setting, he being of a generation where the “old school” model of disciplinary measures was expected. He was known for running a very tight ship (school) and under his management school rules were strictly enforced.

While some students had a dif¿cult time with this, others did not since society as a whole followed a stricter standard of conduct back then.

After nearly 20 years at Lake Cowichan the family moved on with Len taking a teaching position at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby. At that time, one of their children moved to Victoria, another entered the University of Victoria with the youngest attending high school in Burnaby — where they lived for one year.

Upon leaving Burnaby, Plater’s education career took him to Fort St. John with the position of Supervisor of Schools. He went on to ¿ve years as Supervisor for the Lillooet School District. Upon retirement in 1976 Len took on a change of career direction becoming a mortgage broker. He also worked real estate management and general insurance.

Born on December 8, 1915 in Lloydminster, Alberta, Leonard J. Plater passed away in Richmond, B.C. on October 6, 2003; two years after his wife Mary.

Students discuss B.C.’s education plan on-line On the eve of Education Week, Education Minister George Abbott spoke with student leaders at the spring meeting of the B.C. Student Voice to highlight successes from B.C.’s Education Plan, promote student engagement and announce that $10.7 million in new funding will support the plan by helping school districts enhance foundational skills like reading. The funding is earmarked to support struggling readers in the K-12 grades.

The EdChat program, also launched on March 30, offers an informal way for small groups of students to gather in person or online, discuss B.C.’s Education Plan and share their vision for the future of education. Participants work within the ¿ve themes of the plan: personalized learning for every student, quality teaching and learning, Àexibility and choice, high standards and learning empowered by technology. After each EdChat session students can submit their ideas directly to the ministry for review and consideration.

BCSV is a group of student leaders working in cooperation with educators who meet regularly to review provincial directions, gather support for regional initiatives and facilitate development of school and district voices.

I

t was 1913 when the ¿rst school in the community began with classes held in the kitchen of a small log cabin owned by school teacher Miss Ethel Johnson. Located near the Riverside Inn, a handful of young pupils attended school in the same cabin that also served as Johnson’s residence. Sticking to basics, the children were taught their ABCs but not much else.

That same year, the school was taken over by the Education Department of the provincial government in Victoria and classi¿ed as an “assisted school.” To be eligible for government funding a minimum number of students were required. Since there were not enough local children to warrant the funds, an under-aged orphan boy was brought up from Duncan to top up the class numbers. Who he was and how they managed to ¿nd him is not known. As John Clark once wrote: “This was seen as a better solution than that used at Sahtlam (near Duncan) where the school register included a dog in order to meet the minimum number of students!”

By 1919 a new [of¿cial] school was built to accommodate children from different areas around the lake including some who rowed to school from their family homestead up the lake shore. In the mid 1920s, a larger school was built to accommodate the rising enrollment which had climbed to 28 students. The school, which is now a part of the local museum, was built at a cost of just over $3000.

As outlying areas were developing quickly new schools were being built in the smaller communities dotted around the lake. This included schools being built at Paldi, Nixon Creek and Youbou. Others schools were located at Shaw Creek (later called Caycuse school), Mayo (later called Paldi), Gordon River, J. H. Boyd, Mesachie Lake, Honeymoon Bay, Youbou, Lake Cowichan Elementry, Lake Cowichan High School (later called Lake Cowichan Secondary School), and the newer Palsson Elementary and A. B. Greenwell Elementary schools.

In later years, Cowichan Lake Education Centre was acquired (now under the jurisdiction of the Town of Lake Cowichan) and used as an continuing education facility.

By the mid 1960s the district enrollment had risen to 1,700 but declined steadily over the next two decades as local mills and logging operations closed due to changing times.

The district operated a total of six modern schools by 1993 and employed approximately 70 teachers, some dozen support staff and 1,100 students.

With the consolidation of the early schools, School District 66 was formed in 1944. The district remained a viable and well-run district for many decades until the provincial government of the day (1997-1998) dismantled the district and it became a small part of a larger district based in Duncan. Today, the district that began in 1913 is a small part of the large Cowichan Valley School District 79.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Leaving behind to miss her, her children; Susan (Rene) Compagnon, Peter (Annie) Roberts and Heather Roberts (Rick Kozma), her grandchildren; Erinn (Matt) Martin, Faye (Scott) Johnston, Jeremy (Careese) Roberts, Sean (Kelly) Roberts, step grandson Joe (Jennifer) Edwards, great-grandchildren and step greatgrandchildren; Fyfe and baby to be, Alyssa and Kennedy and Isla and Tanner, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews and many good friends. Rose was predeceased by her husband Eric and son Christopher. Her smile and sense of humor and the love for her family will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank the doctors and caregivers in Lake Cowichan and Prince George for all of their wonderful care. We would also like to thank everyone at Prince George Rotary Hospice House for their excellent care and love during Mom’s last weeks. A very special thank you to Sister Beverly for her constant support and love. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, April 9, 2012 at 11:00am at Christ Our Saviour Parish, 4514 Austin Road West, Prince George, BC. A Memorial Tea to be held in Lake Cowichan, details to be announced at a later date.

Mom will be laid to rest in St. James Church cemetery in Summerfield, PEI at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations either to the Prince George Hospice House, Canadian Cancer Society or the Children’s Wish Foundation would be greatly appreciated.

Lake Cowichan Christian Fellowship will be having a family celebration of Easter Sunday services beginning at 10:30 at the church which is located at 57 King George Street.

There will be an all church service on Easter Sunday at the Cowichan Lake Baptist Church beginning at 8:30 a.m. The church is located at 8259 Beaver Road.

St.Christopher's and St. Aidan's Anglican Church at 70 Cowichan Avenue West will have a Good Friday service at 1p.m. and an Easter Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome.

☞ Easter events at the Lake

Cowichan Lake Recreation will be having an Easter egg hunt and family skate over the Easter long-weekend. The Easter egg hunt will happen on Monday, April 9 between 2:30 and 3p.m. at Centennial Park followed by family skating at Cowichan Lake Sports Arena between 3:30 and 4:50 p.m. Both these fun events are free for the entire family.

☞ Easter at BC Forest Discovery Centre, Duncan The BC Forest Discovery Centre in Duncan will be hosting the annual Easter scavenger hunt for families in and around the Cowichan Valley. The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is $5 for children under 12 and $7 for adults. Goodie bags will be provided for children who complete the scavenger hunt while supplies last. Train rides, the Easter Bunny and goodie bags should make for a fun family event.

Curves has gathered 1,829 pounds of food to donate to the Lake Cowichan Food Bank and $150 in cash donations which exceeds last years donation and this years.

Lake Cowichan Secondary School grads are selling Cheers chicken until Apr. 20 as a fund raiser for their graduation. Contact a grad to order.

☞ Seniors' Centre annual bazaar

Seniors' Association bazaar and sale will have baking, crafts and a white elephant sale. It is on Saturday, April 21 from 9a.m. to 2 p.m. There are tables available to rent for $15 per table. Please see Centre's manager if you are interested in renting one. Items for the silent auction will be on display at the Centre from April 14 to April 21. Half of the proceeds go to Canadian Cancer Volunteer Driving Program.

☞ Spring Àing fun

The Cowichan Lake District Chamber Of Commerce will be hosting their 10th Annual Spring Fling Dinner, Auction, and Dance fundraiser on Saturday, April 28. This is the Chamber's major fundraiser of the year. Come and meet the 2012-13 Lady of the Lake candidates and the reigning 2011-12 royalty. The event takes place at Upper Centennial Hall.
