Five years for manslaughter Amrit Gill sentenced for stabbing death of Harvey Hans

Amrit Gill has been sentenced to five years, minus two months already served, for the role he played in the stabbing death of 18-year-old Harmin (Harvey) Hans. In making his decision, Justice William Grist said the crime was an “act of retribution” and

although Gill had apologized in court on Wednesday, Grist said he “apologized only for his presence at the scene,” which was not an indication of remorse. Gill, 23, was convicted of manslaughter in October. In the early morning hours of May 24, 2008, Hans was stabbed in the neck and died on the front lawn of his fami-

ly’s Ridgeview Drive home in Abbotsford following an altercation with Gill; Shavinder (Shevy) Brar, who previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in prison; and a group of their friends. Grist had previously said that he cannot conclusively deterContinued on A6

Comrade honoured About 15 members of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service attended the funeral of volunteer Enderby Fire Department Capt. Dan Botkin on Thursday. The contingent left Abbotsford at about 4 a.m. and later marched in the honour guard procession with fellow uniformed firefighters and emergency personnel, including RCMP in red serge, search and rescue, paramedics and volunteers. The guard also included more than 30 fire trucks from various departments. More than 1,000 firefighters and emergency services personnel from across Canada were in attendance. Botkin, 25, was on duty Dec. 29 when he was killed in a fire and explosion at a log home manufacturing plant.
