Five years for manslaughter Amrit Gill sentenced for stabbing death of Harvey Hans

Amrit Gill has been sentenced to five years, minus two months already served, for the role he played in the stabbing death of 18-year-old Harmin (Harvey) Hans.

In making his decision, Justice William Grist said the crime was an “act of retribution” and

although Gill had apologized in court on Wednesday, Grist said he “apologized only for his presence at the scene,” which was not an indication of remorse.

Gill, 23, was convicted of manslaughter in October.

In the early morning hours of May 24, 2008, Hans was stabbed in the neck and died on the front lawn of his fami-

ly’s Ridgeview Drive home in Abbotsford following an altercation with Gill; Shavinder (Shevy) Brar, who previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to five years in prison; and a group of their friends.

Comrade honoured About 15 members of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service attended the funeral of volunteer Enderby Fire Department Capt. Dan Botkin on Thursday.

The contingent left Abbotsford at about 4 a.m. and later marched in the honour guard procession with fellow uniformed firefighters and emergency personnel, including RCMP in red serge, search and rescue, paramedics and volunteers.

The guard also included more than 30 fire trucks from various departments.

More than 1,000 firefighters and emergency services personnel from across Canada were in attendance.

Botkin, 25, was on duty Dec. 29 when he was killed in a fire and explosion at a log home manufacturing plant.

Adoption agency closes doors About 180 families affected Abbotsford News

Carmyn and Mike Brandner were upset last Thursday to receive notice that the agency through which they had adopted two children, and were awaiting a third, was closing.

The couple is among about 180 families affected by the announcement from Hope Adoption Services of Abbotsford that it is shutting down after 25 years.

They had adopted two daughters through the agency, and were three years into a five-year wait for a baby from China.

“We were, and still are, completely heartbroken (about the closure) ... We have such a close relationship with everyone at Hope ... It’s because of them we have a family,” Carmyn said.

The couple are now concerned with what might happen with their pending adoption and in having to form trust and relationships with people at a different agency.

“We feel like we’re on our own.

We feel like we’re starting all over again,” Carmyn said.

Lorne Welwood, co-founder of Hope Adoption Services, said every effort is being made to ensure the impacted families are supported through the transition. Many will be referred to other agencies.

“We’ll communicate with them on an individual basis as we analyze what needs to be done on their case,” he said. “I think in the next couple of days, the process will be a little clearer.”

Hope Adoption, run from an office at 2975 Gladwin Rd., provided services to men and women facing unplanned pregnancies and to those wanting to adopt, both in Canada and internationally.

However, Welwood said chang-

ing times have meant not enough income was coming in to support the monthly costs.

He said the agency required $40,000 to $45,000 each month to break even. In November, only $17,000 was recorded, after months of economic uncertainty.

The decision to shut down was made in consultation with the provincial director of adoption.

“We’ve been at low spots before and have had unexpected recov-

eries ... So we were praying for another recovery, quite frankly, but it didn’t happen this time,” Welwood said.

Money for Hope Adoption was raised through donations and from clients, who were charged fees for such things as home studies and the processing of paperwork.

Welwood said, over the course of an adoption, a couple paid about $5,000 to $7,000 to the agency, as part of their approximate $30,000 in overall costs.

Societal changes have resulted in fewer domestic adoptions, as more women opt to keep their babies or terminate their pregnancies. He said there are currently only about 50 babies adopted in B.C. each year.

Foreign governments have also tightened regulations, resulting in longer waits and fewer adoptions being approved.

Welwood said it was a difficult decision to shut Hope Adoption’s doors, given the close relationship staff had formed with clients since he and his wife, Ann, opened the agency in 1986.

“It’s been really hard,” he said.

The agency will be working closely with the adoption services unit of the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

An Abbotsford student teacher who asked a 15-year-old female student to meet him and perform a sexual act will serve 21 days in jail and be on probation for two years.

Corey Hamade was sentenced on Friday afternoon in Abbotsford provincial court, and his jail time will be served on weekends beginning Jan. 13 at North Fraser Pretrial Centre.

“My client doesn’t need an introduction to the jail system on a full-time basis,” argued his lawyer Jack Harris.

Hamade pleaded guilty to a charge of invitation to sexual touching, and a charge of luring a child was stayed.

He also noted that media coverage of the case, including being on the front page of a newspaper distributed province-wide, had been an embarrassment to Hamade and his family.

Domaradzki argued that Hamade should be included in the national sex offender registry, but Harris successfully countered that this offence has been punitive enough without following Hamade for another 10 years.

Among the conditions of his probation are having no contact with the victim, to not be in the company of any girl under 16 except family, to provide a DNA sample, and to undergo assessments and counselling as directed by his probation officer.

NewsBytes BANK ROBBERY A robbery occurred on Thursday at the Scotiabank at the corner of Old Yale and McMillan roads in Abbotsford. At 3:40 p.m. a man walked into the bank and handed the teller a note demanding cash and implying he had a weapon. The man is described as a white male in his mid to late 20s, with a thin build and pale complexion. He had facial scarring or acne. The robber was wearing dark clothing, a ball cap and carried a white plastic grocery bag.

Abbotsford recorded a rash of robberies last year, mainly in September and October, but there had been a lull since the last one. Among the robberies still unsolved are five at Subway restaurant locations.

‘SUPER PROLIFIC’ OFFENDER A man described by police as a “super prolific” offender faces charges in connection with the last stolen vehicle report of 2011 in Abbotsford. Clayton Burton Orr, 25, has been convicted more than 30 times, according to Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. He was arrested Jan. 5, along with a 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, in a 2010 Chevy Equinox that was allegedly stolen Dec. 30 from the 32000 block of Chilcotin Drive in Abbotsford. MacDonald said the trio was stopped in Aldergrove on their way from Surrey, and the Equinox was sporting licence plates stolen from Mission. Orr has been remanded in custody and faces charges of possession of stolen property and driving while prohibited. Credit cards and other items found in the vehicle are part of the continuing investigation by the crime reduction unit (CRU). Orr’s prior convictions include possession of stolen property, failure to stop at an accident, dangerous operation of a vehicle, uttering threats, using a stolen credit card, fleeing from a police officer and mischief, according to the provincial court database. CRU targets prolific property offenders and works with other policing jurisdictions to arrest offenders who commit crimes in Abbotsford.

Legal aid lawyers have begun what they vow will be an escalating strike to press the province to increase funding.

It began this week with most lawyers who handle legal aid work refusing to represent new adult clients arrested on criminal charges who cannot afford their own representation. These are typically people who are in custody, and duty counsel will inform them about the charges against them, court procedures, help them post bail, etc.

Of the 70 courthouses in B.C. there was no duty counsel available in 38, including Abbotsford, and only partial service was available in the others.

The January withdrawal of duty counsel services expands to two weeks in the first half of February, followed by three weeks in March and then all four weeks of April.

The tactic by lawyers threatens to leave many more accused people unrepresented before the courts in order to bring the issue to a head.

“It’s not a step they came to lightly,” said Trial Lawyers Association of B.C. communications director Bentley Doyle.

“They’re concerned about leaving clients without help. They feel desperate and they hope it’s short-term pain for long-term gain.”

Legal aid funding has been cut by 27 per cent over the last decade, from $96 million in 2001 to about $67 million.

An extra $2.1 million announced by the provincial government for child-related legal aid will not make a significant difference, Doyle said.

“Far too many citizens right now do not have legal representation,” he said.

Doyle said legal aid should be considered an

essential service in B.C. and therefore should be properly funded.

The government takes in about $100 million annually through its provincial tax on legal fees, but the money is not directed toward legal aid, which the tax was created to fund in the first place.

“The money is there, it just has to be redirected,” said Doyle.

Abbotsford legal aid lawyer Ken Beatch said the action will have a dramatic impact on the justice system if government does not take heed.

He said a person arrested for a relatively minor time could spend a week in jail unnecessarily.

He said some lawyers were available by phone and in person to cover duty counsel services last week, but as the protests get longer the situation will be worse in the courts.

“I don’t know how the government would do it for a month in April,” he said. Things would grind to a halt – the wheels would fall off.”

He said the government received an independent report last year, called Foundation for Change, Report of the Public Commission on Legal Aid in B.C., that called for more funding for legal aid, but has taken no action.

“This is not about giving lawyers money, this is about funding a system,” said Beatch.

Many people before the courts who previously got legal aid assistance are now forced to represent themselves, causing more slowdowns in an already severely congested legal system. A public commission into legal aid last year concluded B.C. is failing its most disadvantaged citizens and seriously lags other jurisdictions.

The provincial government says its new Family Law Act – which encourages mediation and other measures to cut down on court time – will help.

When announcing his decision, Grist also noted that Gill was 19 at the time of the incident and is a good prospect for rehabilitation.

In addition to his prison term, Gill has also been given a lifetime ban preventing him from owning firearms, ammunition or explosives.

Outside the Chilliwack courthouse, Harminder Hans, the victim’s mother, wept uncontrollably.

A family spokesperson said the judge’s decision was too lenient.

Rai said the sentence should have been much longer.

“If he gave him 10 years, then maybe someone else would not grab a knife.”

He added that the family will be affected by the loss for years and there was no saying how long it will take for them to recover.

“He was a great kid ... athletic, he played baseball. He was well known in school as an academic ... a good kid,” said Rai. During the sentencing hearing on Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Carolyn Lawlor said Gill “deliberately orchestrated” the events of that night, in response to a fight that Hans had with Brar’s brother. She recommended a sentence of six to seven years.

Defence lawyer John Conroy had requested a sentence of two years, less a day.

Union calls for end to ‘hallway nursing’ Neil CORBETT Abbotsford News

The B.C. Nurses Union is calling for more beds in the wake of a 20-year-old woman’s death while in a hallway at Abbotsford Regional Hospital early Christmas morning.

“We don’t condone hallway nursing at all,” said Linda Pipe, the BCNU representative for the Fraser Valley.

Pipe could not speak specifically about the case of the woman who died, but noted that safety is a consideration when patients are in hallways.

In a hospital room, at the head of every bed is oxygen, suction and electrical outlets for medical equipment.

She said the woman had been in the hallway four days.

Even though Abbotsford Regional Hospital was only completed in 2008, the nurse’s union says it is overcrowded, and patients are regularly treated in hallways.

She said often family members are upset to arrive and see their loved one being treated in a hallway, particularly when the patient is elderly.

“This is normal now,” said Pipe.

She responded to public criticism that the nurse’s union is raising this issue in advance of negotiations scheduled for March.

“This has nothing to do with negotiations. This

is about safe, quality care that the people of B.C. deserve.”

Anne Clarke, Fraser Health program medical director for emergency, is responsible for 12 ERs in the health region, including Abbotsford’s.

She would not discuss the cause of death or the deceased patient’s condition. The case will be reviewed by staff involved, the nursing manager and physicians. That review will take two or three weeks. An autopsy report, which could take several weeks or as much as three months, will also be done.

Clarke said patients are always assessed as to whether it is appropriate for them to be in a hallway. They must have a stable pulse and blood pressure, and not need suction or oxygen.

She said all of Fraser Health’s hospitals now have patients in the hallways during the annual “winter surge,” involving about 200 to 220 in total throughout the region, and she expects these conditions will remain unchanged until spring.

She said there is no reduction in the level of care for patients in hallways.

“It’s the same nurses and it’s the same doctors who care for them,” she said. “It’s certainly less private, and it’s less quiet.”

She said sometimes patients only remain in a hallway for a matter of hours before they get a room, and sometimes it’s days.

A man who swung a chain and struck an Abbotsford Police officer on Saturday night barricaded himself in his home and didn’t surrender until about five hours later.

The 60-year-old man was taken into custody, and police are recommending he be charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, said Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald.

Police were called to the home in the 2000 block of Meadows Street – north of Marshall Road and east of Clearbrook

Road – at about 5:45 p.m. for a report of an assault. The home is believed to be a boarding house.

MacDonald said the man had allegedly thrown something at a 64-year-old woman in the residence, cutting her face.

Three officers arrived on the scene and attempted to talk to the man, who was in a room in the residence. The man grabbed a fivefoot length of chain, swung it and hit one of the officers in the shoulder and back as he turned away.

The man then shut himself in the room.

MacDonald said the officers, not knowing what weapons the suspect might have or what he might do next, decided to keep him isolated.

They cleared the home of the other three occupants, including the injured woman, and called for backup from the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team (MIERT), which arrived at about 8 p.m.

Officers negotiated with the man for about three hours before he surrendered.

MacDonald could not confirm the suspect was wielding a knife

while he was barricaded, as was reported in the media at the time of the standoff.

He said three factors can be credited for the man’s peaceful surrender: the presence of MIERT, the ongoing negotiations, and the use of a “flashbang” or stun grenade, which produces a loud bang but causes no damage.

“It can have the net effect of startling a person … It got his attention and got him to surrender,” MacDonald said.

He said the man has had “some negative contact with police” in the past, although he could not elaborate.

A paltry exchange

Outside a courthouse Friday, the grief-stricken family of stabbing victim Harmin (Harvey) Hans said the five-year sentence handed to a man involved in his death was too light.

We agree.

The circumstances surrounding Hans’ slaying were not a series of unforeseen, unplanned events that ultimately unfolded into manslaughter.

Amrit Gill and Shavinder Brar “deliberately orchestrated” a confrontation in the early morning hours of May 24, 2008, out of vengeance after Hans had a fight with Brar’s brother.

Gill and Brar, along with several friends, waited until Hans came home and then confronted him.

They had brought a knife and a Taser. Witnesses said they saw Gill holding a shiny object before the fight, and heard him advise Brar how to confront Hans.

While they may not have intended

to kill Hans, the fact they had a knife would indicate they were prepared to commit extreme violence.

While the judge could not determine which of the two men stabbed Hans in the neck, he held them equally accountable, and sentenced Gill to five years, which is the same term Brar received after previously pleading guilty.

The judge also noted that while Gill apologized in court, his regret seemed to be focused on his presence there that night, and the effects the events have had upon him and his family. He showed little remorse over the fact that he helped take Hans’ life.

The family of Harvey Hans understandably feels justice has not been delivered in this case.

If they qualify for early release, Gill and Brar will likely serve much less than five years in jail.

It is a paltry exchange for snuffing out a promising young man’s life.

Using a challenge to the oxymoron Mark

Other Hand On one of the infrequent occasions that I drive the vehicle owned by the one who shares a roof with me, I asked her to turn on the GPS unit.

While not unfamiliar with the handheld units that one uses to ensure a walk in the woods doesn’t result in a call to search and rescue, I have had little to do with those car-mounted units that tell you, turn by turn, where to go. I might add that I am not unfamiliar with that phrase either, though usually it is used in different context.

So our trip to Langley was entered into the GPS’s ‘brain’ and off we went.

“Does it verbally abuse me if I take a wrong turn?” was my first question.

Apparently not, though the voice directing the route does inform that it is ‘recalibrating’ every time I don’t go

where it says.

The voice is also “American English” which means that when indicating a turn onto “Route 1” she says ‘rowt’ instead of ‘root’ . . . slightly annoying, but then I pronounce schedule as ‘shedjewl’ rather than ‘skedyule’ and always get irked when I hear someone say or write that they ‘ran the gauntlet’ rather than the ‘gantlet.’ The first is a glove, the second the line you run down while others try to beat you with sticks. It’s an ancient method of serving penance, though through word misuse, apparently gauntlet is now acceptable.

However, I digress with distractions.

Which, I found, is what a vehiclemounted GPS is ... somewhat distracting, watching the road unfurl before you on the screen rather than through the windshield.

At any rate, it also provides much more than just accurate directions – like how fast I’m driving. Right beside the little box with the posted speed of the highway is another with your travel speed, and when you exceed the limit it glows red.

You don’t get extra points for maintaining that box in the red throughout the trip, but neither do you get admonishment (unless, of course, police radar happens to intervene).

The unit also has an integral altimeter, which can provide some rather

Now I know a little about altimeters and barometric pressure, and know that they are not only very handy, particularly when skydiving, but they need to be calibrated according to the weather.

Depending on the pressure, they

can be out significantly, as I assume it was on Sunday rolling through Langley.

Then again, if Langley really is that far below sea level, I’d want to have more than hip waders close by should a major tsunami threaten Boundary Bay and the dikes that protect the lowlands that stretch from the ocean right into that city’s downtown core.

So, the altimeter may need a little tweaking (or maybe the GPS does it all by itself since, thanks to satellites, it knows where I live and, with a few prompts, where I want to go).

But would I get one for my truck?

Doubtful. I’m a guy.

Guys never get lost, can always find their way, and never need to ask for directions (and if that isn’t an oxymoron, with stress on the ‘moron,’ I don’t know what is!)

Therefore, I’m guessing that under the tree next Christmas there may be a little package with my name on it, just to provide on-route entertainment since I obviously don’t need help with directions. markrushton@abbynews.com

I would like to voice my appreciation, my awe and my utmost gratitude to the multitude of people and especially firefighters that attended the funeral of Captain Dan Botkin in Enderby on Jan 5.

First, I give my heartfelt condolences to his wife, parents, siblings and other family and friends.

I didn’t know Dan, as he was 10 years younger than me, but I grew up in this community and knew his family. I feel I came to know Dan from the stories and anecdotes given by his close friends.

Words cannot express how thankful I am to have been allowed to be included in such a personal, raw display of emotion. It was so inspiring to see how one single person can affect an entire community.

Having just moved back to Enderby, after

living in Calgary for 15 years, I realize it was this sense of community that makes small towns great!

Over 1,000 people came to his service, twothirds of them firefighters and policemen from all over the province, everyone paying their respects to a man who “didn’t die a hero, he was born a hero.�

I was so awestruck by the compassion, love and camaraderie of all these men and women in this community and from this province. I am so proud of our town, for coming together to support each other. I am proud of my province for rallying around one of their own. I am proud of our firemen for protecting our community. Most of all, I am proud to be from Enderby.

RIP Captain Dan. You will be missed.

After in the aftermath of a two-game weekend sweep at the hands of the Grand Rapids Griffins, Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward compared his squad’s performance to that of a sputtering automobile.

“It’s like a car with new parts, and it just didn’t run that well,” Ward analyzed. “It was a tough weekend for us, relative to our chemistry. It was off, it was really off.

“I thought we really bogged down.”

Heading into the weekend, Ward had already lost the services of top defencemen Clay Wilson (recalled by the Calgary Flames) and Brendan Mikkelson (traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning).

Then he saw his lineup further depleted when forward Lance Bouma was recalled by the Flames on Saturday morning.

Those absences were glaring as the Heat fell 4-3 on Friday and 2-1 in overtime Saturday at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.

beat a Richmond defender wide down the left wing, out-waited goalie Kootenay Alder, and tucked the puck inside the far post. “It was a very nice goal,� Pilots head coach Jim Cowden enthused. “We had to work hard, and that was probably one of our most complete games as a team. You have to, to beat those guys.�

Gough seventh in Germany Abbotsfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Amy Gough finished seventh at a World Cup skeleton race in Altenberg, Germany on Saturday.

After making the difficult decision to compete in Altenberg following a serious crash earlier in the week that sent three members of the Canada 2 bobsleigh to hospital, Gough and teammates Mellisa Hollingsworth and Sarah Reid hit the start line with the names of the bobsleigh athletes on their sleds.

Gough traversed the 17-corner track in 1:00.34, finishing second among Canadians.

Hollingsworth was fifth in 1:00.31, while Germanyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Anja Huber won gold in 59.87.

At 97 years of age, diehard Vancouver Canucks fan Evelyn Edwards of Abbotsford was thrilled at the chance to attend her first Canucks game last week.

Edwards is a resident of a seniors home in Abbotsford, where an employee named Brittany Krause took note of her passion for the local NHL team. Krause approached George Gray, a Canucks season ticket holder, who donated tickets for the Jan. 4 home game vs. the Minnesota Wild.

Edwards, holding a sign that read â&#x20AC;&#x153;97 and still waiting for the Cup,â&#x20AC;? was featured on the big screen as the fan of the game. She was presented with a game-worn jersey signed by Canucks forward Andrew Ebbett, and had a chance to meet famed spinal cord-injury activist Rick Hansen, who was honoured earlier at the game.

KEMERY Nora Irene Kemery late of Abbotsford passed away into the presence of the Lord on January 3, 2012 at Maplewood House at the age of 97 years.

She is predeceased by her husband, Rev. Melvin V. Kemery on October 10, 1995 and by her daughter Ann Peat in 2007. She is survived by her daughter, Karen (Edward) Higgins; grandchildren, Tabitha, D’Shawn, Sabrina, Melaini, Tanisha, Chantell and Shanay; great grandchildren, Deondre and Deiomonee. Also survived by her sister, Margaret Speer.

MATTHIES George (Gerhard) July 4, 1929 ~ January 4, 2012

After three and half years of hospitalization at Menno Hospital, George passed away January 4, 2012 peacefully with his beloved wife Anne at his side. Born in Manitou, Manitoba, he was the youngest child and only son of Isaac and Hilda Matthies who had recently emigrated to Canada from Russia via Mexico. In the mid ‘30s, the family moved to Black Creek on Vancouver Island, where George grew up, attended school, and started his working career. On May 5, 1950, George married his sweetheart Anne Friesen in Clearbrook, BC. Anyone who knew George, knew that he loved his family first, and then trucks. He entered the world of heavy-duty mechanics specializing in diesel engines in the mid ‘60s, continuing to work in this field up and down the west coast and into northern BC and Alberta until retirement. George was also very committed to involvement in whatever church they attended, serving as head usher, treasurer, Sunday School teacher, boys’ club, choir member, and including building supervisor for several renovation projects over the years at Clearbrook M.B. Church. George could fix anything, and was often found wearing his greasy coveralls and tinkering on a project. As a couple, George and Anne also loved camping, fishing, travelling with their RV, spending time with family, visiting with old friends, and playing table games. George was predeceased by his parents, Isaac and Hilda Matthies; sisters Melita (Dave) Wedel, Irene (Henry) Van Bergen, and Hilda (Henry) Unger; son-inlaw Tom Boychuk. He is survived by Anne, his wife and love of his life for almost 62 years; daughter Charlotte Boychuk (John Tyler), sons Jim (Ellie) Matthies and Jon Matthies; grandchildren Nathan (Lisa) Schroeder (Sadi, Jakob and Mason), Joel (Theresa) Schroeder (Jorja and Gabrielle), Jessica Matthies, Joshua (Jessica) Matthies; and sister Erika (Ben) Falk. A special acknowledgement to the Menno Hospital West staff for the exceptional care they showed our husband and father.

Memorial Service will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, January 10 at Clearbrook M.B. Church.

MCCORMACK Cheryl Ann May 26, 1994 - Dec. 22, 2011

Cheryl passed away unexpectedly on December 22, 2011.

She will be loved and forever missed by her parents, Shawn and Cathy; sister, Shawna; grandparents, Ian and Merlyn MacAlpine; Aunt Karen and Uncle Lon Fraser, Uncle Doug and Aunt Chrissy MacAlpine, Aunt Patricia McCormack, Aunt Kate McCormack, Aunt Maureen and Uncle Dave Short, and Uncle Dwight McCormack. She is also survived by cousins, Brad Fraser, Keith Fraser, Shannon (Greg) Cavanagh, Leanne (Jason) Swaan, Dan MacAlpine, Tucker Scott, Megan and Aidan Short.

She was predeceased by her grandparents Patrick and Gertrude McCormack. Cheryl also leaves many dear friends whom she loved deeply.

Cheryl was a grade 12 student at Robert Bateman Secondary where her passion was playing rugby. She switched from synchronized skating to rugby when she was in grade 8.

Cheryl was a great team leader and motivator. A caring person, she intended to pursue a nursing career after graduation in June. A Celebration of Cheryl’s life will be held on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Northview Community Church, 32040 Downes Road, Abbotsford, BC. VanLaar Teunis (Teus)

Teunis VanLaar passed away peacefully at his home near Yarrow to be with his Saviour on January 5, 2012, aged ninety-three. He was born on a small farm near Schoonrewoerd, Holland in May of 1918. At age fifteen he began to work as an apprentice stonemason in the city of Utrecht. In 1946 he married his local sweetheart, Florida DeLeeuw, after courting her through the tense war years.

With two young sons they immigrated to Canada in 1950, a land of freedom and opportunity. After working on various farms in Alberta they moved to the Fraser Valley and eventually bought their own dairy farm in Sumas Prairie, a dream come true. There he farmed with his sons until he retired. We are thankful for the love and dedication he showed to his family, leading us in service to God. He leaves behind his wife of sixty five years of marriage, Florida, his children: Jake (Liz), John (Rita), Wilf (Yvonne), Arnold (Marian), and Nell (Dick), 28 grandchildren and 35 greatgrandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 January 10th in the Canadian Reformed Church in Yarrow.

NIKKEL Tony (Anton) (1924 ~ 2012) It is with sorrow and hope that we announce the loss of husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Anton (Tony) Nikkel. Tony passed into the presence of his Lord and Saviour on January 6, 2012. He was born in Gretna, Manitoba on September 24, 1924 to Jacob and Maria Nikkel, the youngest of thirteen children. Tony resided in BC since 1946 working with the Cities of New Westminster and Revelstoke. In 1976 he moved to Abbotsford and was involved in construction. He dedicated much of his time to The Gideons, church and community activities. He especially enjoyed times spent with family. He is missed by Tina, his loving wife of 65 years, children, Ken (Donna), Warren (Wanda), Bob, and Debbie (Dennis), nine grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents and all siblings. The family is grateful for the excellent care and love shown Tony by the staff at The Cottage Pavilion. A viewing will be held at Henderson’s Fraser Valley Funeral Home at 34537 Marshall Road on Wednesday, January 11, 7:00 - 8:30 pm. Helen Dorothy Schmidt was born April 4, 1919 in Rosthern, SK Canada to Herman Harry Stobbe, Stubbe, Stubbs and Katharina (Tena) Wall. The family seemed to be constantly moving. They lived in Borden, Saskatoon, Montana, North Dakota, Dallas OR, Bakersfield, Shafter California, Wembly AB, Clearbrook, Matsqui flats. In 1937 she married Willie Arthur Schmidt.

Shortly after they attended Millar Bible School for 3 years.

After joining Sudan Interior Mission they left for Ethiopia in 1951. Bill’s experience in construction meant starting many new stations. Helen served as hostess, bookkeeper, bookstore clerk, doctor’s assistant, dorm parent and personal evangelist. After retiring in 1976 they were involved at Central Heights Church and Helping Hands. After injuries sustained in a fall, she was admitted to hospital and passed away into the arms of Jesus whom she loved and served while in the Menno Hospital on January 5, 2012. She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Bill, in 2000, 3 brothers, Norman, Archie, Johnny, 1 sister, unnamed. She is survived by her son, Russ and 4 brothers: Herman, Fred, Ray, Allan. We will miss your loving spirit and those awesome hugs. Viewing at Central Heights Church on Wednesday, January 11 from 6 - 8 pm.
