A 24-year-old Abbotsford woman is battling for her life after ingesting ecstasy with three friends on New Year’s Eve. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the woman, whose name has not

been released, was at a home in the 33700 block of George Ferguson Way when she became unconscious and unresponsive.

She was treated on scene at about 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day by BC Ambulance and Abbotsford Fire Rescue personnel before being transported to hospital.

MacDonald said the women, ages 23 to

31, took “numerous” blue ecstasy pills throughout the evening, starting at the residence. They then went out for the night and returned to the home, ingesting the last pills at about 4 a.m.

Abbotsford records no murders in 2011

Abbotsford was previously dubbed the murder capital of Canada for two consecutive years during a violent gang war that spilled into city streets, but the trend has been reversed.

Abbotsford Police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald credits police initiatives and community involvement for diminishing gang violence that led in part to six murders in 2008, 11 in 2009 and four in 2010.

There were none in 2011, although MacDonald noted that the 17-yearold male victim of a baseball bat assault in early December is still clinging to life.

The 2008 and 2009 numbers resulted in Abbotsford recording the most murders per 100,000 population for census metropolitan areas, according to Statistics Canada.

Instead, Abbotsford acknowledged the gang issues head-on and decided to do something about it, MacDonald said.

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD)

formed the gang suppression unit (GSU) in early 2010 and launched a series of anti-gang programs aimed at youth and parents.

The GSU helped stem gang violence at its core, by identifying and/or arresting key players in organized crime and ensuring police kept tabs

on them, MacDonald said. Grow-ops and dial-a-dope operations were busted, halting the gangs’ prime source of revenue and causing a disruption in their activities.

The goal was to make Abbotsford known as a bad place for criminals to do business, MacDonald

said.

Meanwhile, the “Operation” series of programs – which included videos, posters and presentations – was aimed at prevention by spreading awareness about gang-recruitment tactics and encouraging a positive lifestyle.

MacDonald said, although gangs are still active in the community, their presence isn’t as powerful as when groups such as the Red Scorpions, the UN Gang and the Duhre Group dominated the streets.

“There is no definitive leader group in Abbotsford (right now).

There are several gangs that are functioning within our territory and they have all minority stakes,” he said.

The APD plans to continue with and expand on its existing resources to ensure gang violence is suppressed and the homicide rate remains low, MacDonald said.

“If you have a goalie that has achieved a shutout for you, you don’t pull your goalie.”

Police seeking source of ecstasy From A1

MacDonald said.

This is the second ecstasy overdose in Abbotsford in less than two weeks. Cheryl McCormack, 17, died Dec. 22 after having taken ecstasy with three other friends at a sleep-over on Dec. 19.

McCormack’s friends indicated that the girls had been taking the drug, which can suppress appetite, to aid in weight loss.

In the latest case, the women were using

ecstasy solely as a recreational drug, MacDonald said.

He said police want the public to be aware of the risks of using illicit drugs.

“My concern is that, for whatever reason, it (ecstasy) is in vogue right now ... Either this is gaining popularity in our city or people who are supplying it are marketing it more ... or doing something to ensure it’s getting out there more.”

Police are trying to

track down the source of the drug in the two ecstasy overdoses.

Ecstasy, usually taken in pill form, is referred to as the “love drug” because of the euphoric and relaxed feelings it produces.

However, because ecstasy is man-made, its contents and quality can vary, according to Health Canada.

It is sold as a tablet, capsule or powder.

The tablets are often stamped with a logo and are sold in differ-

ent colours.

It is similar to stimulant drugs such as cocaine or methamphetamine and can contain traces of other substances such as LSD, PCP or meth, as well as soaps and detergents, the agency says.

The drug causes an increase in body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate, which can lead to kidney or heart failure, strokes and seizures, according to Health Canada.

Abbotsford’s first baby of the new year was born at 4:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day. The baby girl, who weighed 8 lbs. 14 oz., was one of three vying for the title at Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

The New Year’s baby for all of B.C. arrived at three minutes past midnight at B.C. Women’s Hospital. The baby girl, Isabella Marie Payne, weighed in at 9.5 pounds and was born to Jessica Clasen and Chris Payne of Vancouver.

The Queen’s counsel designation is an honour conferred on members of the legal profession to recognize exceptional merit and contribution. Successful candidates demonstrate professional integrity and good character, and must be members of the B.C. bar for at least five years. Each September, the attorney general calls for Queen’s counsel nominations from the public. All applications were reviewed by an advisory committee, which recommended deserving candidates to the attorney general. The appointments are subsequently made by cabinet through an order-in-council. Fast is the federal Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. Before being elected Member of Parliament for Abbotsford in 2006, he served nine years on city council. He was called to the B.C. bar in 1983, practising corporate law, wills and estates and conveyancing in the Fraser Valley area.

Fraser Valley residents experienced a green Christmas in 2011, followed by a warmer than normal New Year.

Temperatures have crept up as high as 11 degrees Celsius during a month normally known for chilly winds and icy roads.

“Your normal high at this time of year is about four degrees in Abbotsford,” said Environment Canada meteorologist David Jones.

The average low hovers at about the zero mark.

A look at the upcoming weather forecast shows temperatures closer to the 10 range.

“We’re just getting a series of these systems that are coming at us from the southwest. They head to the northern gulf of Alaska and they sweep this warm air all up across the coast and into the Interior.” said Jones.

He said temperatures will be up and down over the next few days While winter’s icy touch has been elusive, the recent warm spell was far from record-breaking.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Abbotsford in December was 18.2 C on Dec. 26, 1980.

Still, the warmer temperatures are a sharp contrast to earlier predictions which warned B.C.ers to expect one of the coldest winters in recent memory.

“That was absolute rubbish from AccuWeather in the U.S. Ignore everything you hear about the weather from AccuWeather. The long-range forecast is nothing but speculation ... it’s not an objective forecast in any way,” said Jones.

He also pointed out that winter only started two weeks ago, so it’s “a bit early” to classify trends.

Police are still trying to establish the motive behind a makeshift explosive device being detonated at a townhouse complex in Abbotsford early Saturday morning.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said investigators were on scene until about noon Sunday. They are still checking out the backgrounds of those who lived in the unit, and of those who have visited, he said.

Police were called to Kinsmen Creekside Estates – a subsidized housing complex located at 33295 Maclure Rd. – at about 6:45 a.m.

Three adults were in the residence at the time of the explosion, which occurred in the patio area at the back of the unit. “I don’t believe there were any children present or currently occupying (the home),�

Neighbours alleged residents of the home are involved in the drug trade, but MacDonald said that information has not been confirmed.

He said police have attended the residence before, but he wasn’t certain for what types of calls.

MacDonald said although there have been some suggestions that the bomb was detonated from a toy remote control car, that also has not been confirmed.

The RCMP explosives disposal unit arrived on the scene at about 10 a.m. The exact type of explosive device used has not yet been revealed, MacDonald said.

Police have not yet tracked down any suspects, he added.

For anyone resolving to “go green� in the new year, the Abbotsford-Mission Recycling Depot is offering free Christmas tree disposal through January.

Dozens of people already dropped off trees during the final week of 2011, said Sean Scudder of the recycling depot.

He said he expects that number to pick up dramatically once more people start taking down their holiday decorations.

“Just make sure all the ornaments and tinsel are off,� Scudder said, warning that those products cannot be mixed in with organic waste.

The recycling depot, located at 33670 Valley Rd., also advises against recycling gift wrap. Most wrapping paper is not recyclable due to the high dye content and low quality of the paper as well as any plastic ribbons that come attached.

Political change A new year is here, and it’s an appropriate time to take a look at the political happenings of 2011 and how they are likely to shape 2012.

On the federal scene, Canada finally has a majority in Ottawa after almost seven years of minority governments. While the Conservatives have a comfortable margin, the government thus far hasn’t embarked on many bold initiatives.

It is governing in challenging times, with the world economy precarious, and caution is understandable.

In provincial politics, what a difference a year makes. The governing Liberals, NDP and Conservatives all have new leaders, but the government is in trouble as a new year begins. While new premier Christy Clark has provided a fresh face, she has done little to distinguish herself from her unpopular predecessor.

The HST took one premier down and could take another, and her

government with it.

The NDP, on the other hand, could have ended the year as deeply divided as it was in January.

Instead, the party is ahead in the polls and new leader Adrian Dix appears to be on a roll.

The long-dormant Conservatives have come to life under John Cummins, and a recent poll shows them tied with the Liberals. While that seems unlikely to last, the party has clearly attracted many disaffected former Liberal voters.

Locally, there was also significant change. Incumbent mayor George Peary was defeated in the November municipal election by newcomer Bruce Banman. Peary was the champion of the proposed Stave Lake water system, and was voted out as the unpopular P3 water plan was defeated in referendum.

There is little doubt that Clark, Dix, Cummins and Banman will continue to make headlines in 2012.

Other Hand We just knew, the way the wind was raging on Sumas Mountain all Christmas morning, that the power would go out. And sure enough at 1:05 p.m., precisely five minutes after the turkey was put in the oven, everything electrical came to an abrupt halt.

A little while later a fire truck, with lights flashing and sirens wailing, rolled up the hill past the house. And then it stopped. Less than three hundred meters past our driveway, the wind had toppled a big fir, which in turn snapped off a power pole, flinging ‘hot’ wires all over the road.

With that mess, the power was not going to be back on anytime soon, so needless to say, the turkey went to the dump instead of to dinner.

To steal a few words from a Joni

Mitchell song “ . . . you don’t know what you got til it’s gone,” when it comes to electricity on Christmas Day. Fortunately, our day had been planned as one of visiting family, which gratefully resulted in dinner with relatives instead of at home, present opening delayed until we returned to a darkened house.

And when we did, it was like a Cariboo Christmas, goodies unwrapped and opened to the hissing of Coleman lamps, the fireplace providing heat and the muted thump of the generator outside delivering enough power to light the tree.

Romantic in a way, certainly memorable, as we gathered in front of the fire while just up the road Hydro crews worked doggedly, and heroically I could add, considering ‘the day,’ to put up a new pole and restring all the wires.

At just after midnight, suddenly all was bright . . . just in time for bed. Yet rather than spoiling Christmas, the lack of electricity over the evening added to the ambiance of

the celebration.

In the days that followed we appreciated our experience and our gifts, one of which I wondered about. It was a jigsaw puzzle, something I haven’t put together in years, and have never expressed an interest in.

...they were, like the electricity of Christmas Day, gone forever.

However, rising to the challenge I decided I’d tackle it and over a card table I spread the pieces. The design was complicated, suggesting it would take at least a couple of days to puzzle out. Finally the ‘picture’ began to take shape, and then I realized some pieces were missing.

Expressing my dismay, all I got in response was “that’s nonsense.”

Look, I pointed out, there are defi-

nitely not enough of ‘these pieces’ to complete ‘that part.’

Agreement was reached and a search was on to see if the missing bits were somewhere on the floor.

Eventually, I noticed a couple of dark chunks on the dog’s bed.

Either he’d scooped them off the floor, or opportunistically licked them off the edge of the table over which the pieces were spread.

Regardless of his ability to acquire them they were, like the electricity of Christmas Day, gone forever.

I did complete the puzzle, minus four or five pieces.

I also came to the realization that there may be some truth to the old story about the kid who couldn’t turn in his homework because ‘the dog ate it.’

So as we move into another year, I hope that everyone else’s holiday time was somewhat less eventful though nevertheless as joyful, and that the dreams and plans you made over New Year will all come true.

letters Overhaul BC Assessment I’ve paid my property tax for 2011. It has increased by $445, or 36 per cent over 2010.

The assessment of the property has increased by 23.7 per cent. Is that fair in Chilliwack?

I don’t think so. The real estate market has not increased by 23.7 per cent.

BC Assessment has decided that I have a finished basement, which I do not have.

Have they seen the house? Of course not. That would mean they would have to leave the office.

The point of this is that this bunch of bureaucrats can do anything they want, because they are not accountable to anyone, especially you the taxpayer. You will also notice on your property assessment

notice or the tax bill they do not show that they are basing their assessment on other land/buildings. They could have listed you as having several outbuildings that you don’t have, yet be taxed on them. You just don’t know and they don’t tell you.

So, unless you have a computer, you will not know what you are being taxed on. My assessment is $17,000 higher than my neighbours’s assessment, even though he has a fully finished basement, but otherwise identical floor plan.

I went to the BC Assessment office in Abbotsford to ask for an adjustment, but was two days late. I was told they could do nothing about the wrong assessment, and they wouldn’t

even come and look at my property. These so-called professional appraisers can make mistakes and over-assess your property. We’re simply the victims of these non-accountable bureaucrats.

Is there a connection between BC Assessment and the municipalities’ need to maximize assessments to increase revenues?

To those who may feel that they also have been wrongly assessed, I would like to hear from you. The only way we can ensure proper assessments is if we band together and confront BC Assessment.

‘Devastating’ withdrawal from Kyoto It is very devastating to Canada that the Harper government withdrew from the Kyoto Protocol.

We have reached a critical point, and if action is not taken to reduce pollution, we may be at a point of no return come 2015.

It is particularly outrageous that Stephen Harper performed this act without calling for polls.

If the government makes final decisions without calling for polls and taking on the majority of citizens’ opinions, we are not living in a true democracy.

It is particularly important that we make public transportation feasible, extensive, and inexpensive, to such an extent that a car is not necessary for getting around in most places.

In Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, my place of residence, buses are not very feasible and one ride costs $3. That has made it much more difficult to get around Saskatoon without a car; thus, pollution levels have risen. The local bus company does not take on the majority of opinions, but makes final decisions.

As well, passenger train services should be much more extensive; in fact, comparable to those in most of Europe.

If we had the above types of public transportation, pollution would be greatly reduced, as a large fraction of pollution comes from cars.

In addition, recycling plants need to accept every type of recyclable material, and recycling programs at condos, etc., need to do this as well.

I sincerely hope people will take action to

the above and that restrictions on natural resources will be introduced.

The City of Abbotsford will hold a community meeting to consult with the public on a proposal to amend the City’s Of¿cial Community Plan (OCP), which would change the land use designation of a portion of the subject property from Agricultural to Low Density Residential and amend the West Abbotsford Area Plan. This amendment is necessary in conjunction with a proposal to rezone a portion of the subject property from Agricultural One Zone (A1) to One Unit Urban Residential Zone (RS3) and a Comprehensive Development Zone to permit the development of a residential subdivision.

Two of the worst-hit cities are Cagayan de Oro and Iligan where churches, schools and community centres have been converted into temporary evacuation centres.

MCC does not have staff in the Philippines, but is working through an organization associated with the Integrated Mennonite Churches of the Philippines, called PeaceBuilders Community, Inc. (PBCI). Following the floods of September 2009, MCC partnered with PBCI to train two peace and reconciliation teams in disaster preparedness.

The needs identified by PBCI in this current disaster are food, water, medicine, bedding and footwear for survivors in the crowded evacuation centres.

...said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president for Global Product Development. “The unmatched combination of responsive power with responsible fuel efficiency is attracting new customers to Ford showrooms.”

Demand for the EcoBoost engine in the F-150 has increased each month since launch. 55% of Ford F-150 pickups sold in 2011 were powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. In the F-150, the EcoBoost engine with its 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque provides best-in-class towing capability of 11,300 lbs combined with up to 20 percent fuel economy savings. The 2011 F-150 EcoBoost carries an EPA rating of 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, making it the best combination of capability and efficiency among light duty full-sized pickups.

The Technology

Later this year, the first North American fourcylinder EcoBoost engine, a 237-horsepower 2.0-liter, will make its debut in the Explorer SUV and Edge CUV. Next year, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine will be available in the high-performance Focus ST. Ford is currently rolling out EcoBoost engines globally. EcoBoost is available in Europe for Mondeo, Galaxy, S-MAX and C-MAX, for example, and has just launched in Australia in Mondeo.

EcoBoost™ combines direct injection with turbocharged performance to give you instant low-end torque and virtually no turbo lag. Direct injection produces a cooler, denser charge that generates more power per every drop of fuel, while the design of the small air-to-air intercooled turbochargers spool up much more quickly than a large turbo.

The best part? It also happens to be better for the environment.

EcoBoost engines are fundamental to the Ford strategy of providing technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains that deliver exceptional fuel economy and uncompromised performance for millions of drivers around the world. By 2013, Ford plans to produce up to 1.5 million EcoBoost engines globally in a wide variety of vehicles from small cars to trucks.

Rheault became the Abbotsford Heat’s all-time leading scorer during a two-game sweep of the Stars last week at the Abbotsford

Mrs. Gifford was a member of the Abbotsford Baptist Church, and a retired member of SIM mission organization.
