A FISH TALE

Annual flooding has damaged the McLean Mill fish ladder again, with no fix in sight.

Standing on top of the dam at McLean Mill National Historic Site, watching Kitsuksis Creek power downstream from the mill pond, one can see the powerful effect nature has had on the aging wooden fish ladder this winter.

Heavy rain and melting snow have overtopped the dam and the emergency overflow, smashing rocks into the fish ladder and causing havoc with the fish habitat that volunteers with the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association’s hatchery so carefully monitor.

Sadly, this is not a new story: the same scenario has played out with worsening effect over the last three winters.

Bob Cole, a member of the Alberni Valley Sportfishing Advisory Committee and also part of the Ultimate Fishing Town committee, shakes his head while surveying the damage.

“We’re getting frustrated nothing has happened yet,” Cole said.

The dam was re-built in 1996 after the federal government dredged the mill pond in preparation for opening McLean Mill as a national historic site.

A swale was put in to try and alleviate flooding, but it hasn’t been effective for the kind of weather the Alberni Valley has experienced in the past few years.

Several considerations are at play in the decisionmaking process, Port Alberni city engineer Guy Cicon said. Fish health, dam safety and historic integrity all have important roles.

The first option under investigation is to replace the dam, which would include the fish ladder.

been overtopped, lending urgency to the project, Cicon said. He has asked for $285,000 in the city’s 2012 budget to fix the dam; the budget has not yet been approved.

Cole said there is money available from the Ultimate Fishing Town win and wood beams donated for the work— they just need the OK from the city to move ahead.

Cicon hoped a decision could be made in the next two weeks, although construction wouldn’t begin for awhile after that.

Hatchery volunteer Jake Leyenaar fears that will be too late.

Leyenaar does not agree with the idea of re-routing

the creek. “The issue to me is prove to me first that the creek was there,” he said.

Leyenaar would like to see the fish ladder replaced at the very least, to get the hatchery through the season.

He expects 12,000 to 14,000 smolts coming from the top end of the creek in the next two weeks; the fish ladder will protect them from the overflow area when it dries out, he said.

“This (ladder) does work very efficiently. We’ve been operating off of it for approximately 18 years now,” he said, despite incurring damage from flooding in recent years.

“We’ve got a few big boulders in there so right now even the steelhead couldn’t even move up.”

If the problem is not rectified, it will affect the steelhead and coho runs.

And that will be a big blow to the people who have spent nearly two decades building the runs back up.

“When we started 18 years ago there were only six or eight fish going through, and now we have a high as 2,700 (coho) going through as adults,” he said.

For the first four years of operation—one natural salmon cycle—they augmented their stock with fish from Robertson Creek Hatchery. Since then, they have only used stock they placed in their own system.

“That’s still what we’re doing today.”

Uganda a cultural adventure for youth Brendan Hamilton embarked on a trip to Uganda last month to perform aid work with Videa, an NGO based out of Victoria.

hen I first arrived in Uganda I had the pleasure meeting our Ugandan resource person.

At first, thinking that this man named Yasin was just going to be a supervisor of ours. Fast forward a month. Yasin has become more then a resource person. He has become my friend, my mentor and a brother I never had (I have four sisters).

A few times a week he (Yassin) likes to pop by our guesthouse, check up on us, ask how’s work, anything troubling you these days? Little stuff like that is enough to comfort me and make me forget about how far away and how much I miss my home.

Jinja has felt like home. I’ve been to Kampala and Mosaka when I first rolled into Africa. Kampala is the capital of Uganda.

Thousands of people everywhere at all times, and traffic is absolute anarchy.

A Mazuunga is a term that all Ugandans use to refer to a foreigner. At first I thought it meant ‘white man’ and I didn’t like it until I found out its true meaning.

The people here are never as I imagined.

When I’m engaged in conversation with a random local (person), I get asked three questions. “How are you?” “How is life?” and “Do you like Uganda?” I will give the same three

I’ve come to be-friend a local guy named Peter, maybe in his early 20’s who makes “rolexes” for a living... it’s not the cheap watch you buy at Walmart.

A rolex is a chipat’e (kind of like a tortilla wrap) and some eggs mixed with a variety of veggies. I like my rolex to have carrots, green peppers, onion, cabbage and tomatoes with a pinch of salt.

The vendor then cracks the eggs in a cup, mixes the veggies, beats it with a fork and pours the contents on a iron cast plate with a convex shape.

Sounds easy, but I remember my first omelette I made which eventually turned into scrambled eggs.

My favourite activity is to go to a café, sip on a cola and read the paper to catch up on current events.

I refuse to drink the coffee here because the first cup I tried, I was given a cup of hot water and fast dissolving coffee powder. I will pass on a cup of Joe until my return home.

So far my favourite place for breakfast/ lunch is either the café Flavors or Ozzies: excellent burgers and sandwiches. As for dinner, I like the Chinese restaurant Ling Lings. That doesn’t say that I don’t like local food, it just gets repetitive at times.

The first few weeks I was here there were a couple of demonstrations, both violent ones. As much as I would love to witness such an event I have to put my personal safety first and the last thing I want is to be is locked up.

Soccer here is very big; not many people I run into don’t watch the sport.

When I was in Isalo, a rural village in eastern Uganda, I watched the local boys play a game of soccer.

These guys were the most phenomenal

players I have ever seen in my 12 years I played the sport.

They were playing on a field that was mostly dead grass, rocks and holes while barefoot.

These rural kids had the greatest ball handling skills, shooting capabilities, and their defense

was solid. This goes to show that even something as small and fun as soccer, can make a person’s day really happy and joyful.

City approves capital requests

News nominated for national awards The Alberni Valley News has been nominated for three national newspaper awards by the Canadian Community Newspapers Association.

The News will also receive a CCNA Blue Ribbon as one of the best newspapers in Canada in our circulation category.

Several capital projects have received funding despite the city of Port Alberni projecting a deficit of $7.5 million for 2012.

The city is planning to dip into its surplus in order to balance the budget.

Money for a waterfront industrial road was one of several projects approved by Port Alberni city council at a special budget

meeting on Monday.

Councillors spent the afternoon dissecting the budget line by line.

Among the engineering capital projects discussed at the meeting was the Waterfront Industrial Road. Council agreed to spend $50,000 for engineering design work. The finished product will be used later in an application to the General Strategic Priority Fund for more expansive work.

Unions sign contract with Catalyst mill WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Catalyst Paper has reached a new labour agreement with its unions, a company news release said.

The contracts apply to more than 1,000 workers at the company’s Port Alberni, Crofton, and Powell River

mills. The new contracts are effective after the existing contract expires on April 30, 2012.

According to CEP Local 592’s blog, officials reported on March 16 that the local chapter joined others in voting in favour of the agreement.

Officials further reported that a tentative deal was

reached on March 11.

The agreements are a step in the right direction, but there are more steps yet to take, said Catalyst President and CEO Kevin J. Clarke.

“Approval of the new labour agreements lets everyone know that the people who make up Catalyst are taking the actions necessary to save

jobs and ensure we have a viable and competitive business for the future,” Clarke said “We appreciate there is still an enormous amount of work to do to complete the restructuring plan that will enable the company to exit creditor protection on solid footing going forward.”

Infant deaths highest in Alberni: VIHA study WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Alberni and its surrounding areas have some of the highest rates of serious infant health issues and autoimmune diseases in the province.

The statistics were revealed in a Local Health Area Profile of Alberni assembled from other organizations material by the Vancouver Island Health Authority in 2011.

The report was recently released to Port Alberni city

council and the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District.

The report contains demographic information about regional economics, health, births, education, crime, housing and other categories.

According to the report, Alberni’s infant mortality rate is 10.7 per 1,000 people, which is above the B.C. average of 3.4 per 1,000.

As well, infant death and stillbirth rates are 120 per cent and 85 per cent higher respectively than the VIHA average.

At 29.9 per 1,000

there were more children in care in the Alberni Valley than in B.C. (4.2) or VIHA (13).

There were also 18.1 cases of child abuse per 1,000, which is higher than B.C. (7) or VIHA (10.9).

The Alberni region also has the highest rate of rheumatoid arthritis and the second highest rate of diabetes in VIHA. The data is region wide and not Port Alberni specific and therefore must be taken in context, said VIHA Central Vancouver Island medical health officer Dr. Paul Hasselback.

As well, infant mortality data is being re-examined for its accuracy, but the issue still needs to be addressed. “We need to look at regional characteristics, programs and gaps in

services,” Hasselback said.

At 16 per cent, the Alberni region has a higher aboriginal population than either VIHA (5.8 per cent) or B.C. (4.8 per cent), and this may partially explain the arthritis and diabetes rates.

“The rates among certain aboriginal groups are two to four times higher,” Hasselback said. “But I need to see more data to say that for certain.”

The numbers are disturbing and are a call to action, said Port Alberni city councillor Cindy Solda, who is the

city’s appointee to the hospital board.

“They blew me away and were upsetting, but this isn’t the first time statistics have been that low,” Solda said. “It’s time to start doing something about it.”

The Community Health Network is the vehicle to start addressing the issues, Solda said.

The network includes participation by municipal and regional government, community groups, and VIHA. Its mandate is to find solutions to crossjurisdictional underlying issues

affecting health.

They key, Solda said, is not to try to work on the issues holus bolus, but instead to prioritize and tackle them one piece at a time.

“I’d like us to start with the children’s issues and work from there,” Solda said. “I think that starting with children is a step in the right direction.”

The right direction consists of many more steps though, Solda said. “It’s going to take a long time to address this — it won’t be any quick fix.”

Councillors also approved an $11,000 (10 per cent) increase to the SPCA budget.

And they voted to proceed with a grant application to the General Strategic Priorities Fund for water treatment

upgrades.

The city expects to bring in $44.6 million in revenue for 2012. Expenditures, however, total $52.1 million, forcing the city to make up that $7.5 million from somewhere.

Municipalities in B.C.

are not permitted to carry a deficit but must balance their budgets every year.

Council meets again on March 26 to review reports and amendments.

The budget has to be adopted by May 15.

According to a letter from the CEP’s lawyer, the company’s creditor protection status does have in impact.

In response to questions from CEP members, the lawyer clarified that there is a stay of all legal actions against the company while they work out their affairs.

There are also potential impacts to pensions.

Catalyst may try to discontinue pension top-ups to employees’ age 55-59 under and enhanced package, one of several.

The creditor protection status doesn’t require the company to cease the payments but it’s a possibility, the lawyer noted.

School District 70 may not get to keep approximately $246,000 it saved during teachers’ three-day job action in March.

The money was saved by teachers’ salaries not being paid during the action before spring break, School District 70 secretary treasurer Jerry Linning said.

Teachers walked out over their disapproval of Bill 22, which halts all job action while a government appointed mediator looks to end an ongoing contract dispute between teachers and the province.

Trustees are aware of the matter in principle but there have been no detailed discussions about what is to become of the savings, Linning said.

District administrators have been performing supervisory duties since teachers stopped performing them in

September as part of their job action. But the district hasn’t expended more money than normal for supervisory duties.

“The education ministry is likely weighing their options but they haven’t yet provided directions to school districts about the savings,” he said.

Districts across the province saved approximately $11 million per day by not paying teachers salaries over the three-day job action, a Ministry of Education spokesperson said.

“We’re still working

with districts to determine the full extent of the savings.”

The ministry hasn’t made a decision yet about what to do with the savings but they’ll likely be used elsewhere in the education sector, the spokesperson said.

“One option would be to consider applying it (savings) to fund the first year of the $165 million Learning Improvement Fund,” the spokesperson said.

The fund would be implemented over three years and is designed to help school districts

address classroom composition issues.

School District 70 has other pressing needs where the money is needed, trustee Rosemarie Buchanan said.

“We’re facing a $1.2 million transportation funding decrease over three years, we could have applied ours there,” she said.

“But it might be a fait accompli before trustees even get a chance to discuss it.”

Alberni District Teachers Union president Ken Zydyk wasn’t available for comment.

Two-tier too much health Connecting students with right jobs A plan to provide a mobile magnetic resonance imaging service for a large section of Vancouver Island sharply contrasts public- and private-funded health care.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority is inviting bids to prepare sites for a mobile MRI unit. This will certainly benefit people who live in or near the four affected communities.

Comox Valley residents, for example, currently must travel to Nanaimo or Victoria for MRIs. Unless, of course, they have the money to spend in Courtenay at a private MRI on Ryan Road.

Spend you will for the privilege of avoiding travel and government-funded waiting lists. Costs for a scan generally range from $875 to more than $1,000.

Contrast this with no charge for a medicare-covered MRI. The catch, of course, is that the new mobile MRI will rotate between the four communities.

While existing waits should be shortened in Nanaimo, there will naturally be some waits for the mobile MRI. The best argument for privatized health care is how it takes people out of the taxpayer-funded system and reduces those wait times.

The best argument against it is that it creates two levels of health care – one for the wealthy and one for the rest of us.

It violates the Canada Health Act, yet there it is and everybody acts like it isn’t.

ICTORIA – The noise of the teachers’ strike drowned out debate on the B.C. budget so thoroughly that one of Finance Minister Kevin Falcon’s more controversial ideas only made the news last week.

Reporters dubbed it “Welfare Air.” Falcon plans a pilot program to offer social assistance recipients training and airfare if they can line up a job in B.C.’s northern energy boomtowns.

Workers are being imported to fill jobs there, while in Metro Vancouver and elsewhere the number of single employable people applying for social assistance is rising.

Much of oil and gas work is dirty and dangerous. These days most industrial jobs involve sophisticated electronics, and the technical skill level

required is high. But there are entry-level jobs going begging, and relatively high pay is offered to fill positions in a short-staffed service sector in the Peace region.

NDP MLA Carole James, no stranger to northern B.C., dismissed Falcon’s plan as a stunt. There are unemployed people in the region who should be offered training before we start flying people up from Vancouver, James said.

Yet I repeatedly hear from northern employers that the labour shortage is real and growing.

The NDP warns that B.C. faces a future of “people without jobs, and jobs without people.”

Mostly they blame the B.C. Liberals for removing apprenticeship programs from union control.

I spoke with James about post-secondary needs a couple of weeks ago. She mentioned NDP

leader Adrian Dix’s signature policy to restore B.C. student grants, funded by a capital tax on financial institutions.

She also agreed that part of the problem is young people taking postsecondary education that leads to fields with poor job prospects.

I suggested that if B.C. taxpayers are to increase their subsidy to postsecondary students, already worth about two-thirds of their schooling costs, perhaps grants could be targeted to areas of pressing economic need.

To my surprise, James agreed that is worth considering. This is significant, not only because it is likely to be unpopular in the education establishment.

There is a good chance that James, a former school trustee, will be B.C.’s education minister in 14 months.

After writing about the labour shortage last week, I was bombarded with messages from an irate Vancouver high school teacher who mocked the whole notion as corporate propaganda.

No labour shortage exists, globally or in B.C., he claimed. Rather, “capitalists” of the “one per cent” have tried to “vocationalize” public education for a century, but the “people” have always “resisted.”

Radical socialists aside, why would matching student aid to employment demand be unpopular with teachers?

Education Minister George Abbott offered a clue during the lengthy debate over ending the teachers’ strike. Abbott noted that for every three teachers coming out of B.C. universities, there is currently only one job available.

Certainly student debt is an issue worth discussing.

And most would agree it’s easier to pay off loans if one can find a job in one’s field upon graduation.

Too many jobs, not enough trained From / 10 Should further subsidies go to soonto-be-unemployed teachers? No. Our education system trains too many people for what they want to do, rather than what the economy needs.

Further to that, a tax on banks will be popular with some of today’s students, who protested against capitalism in the “occupy” camps that

will resume as the weather improves.

Others will examine the idea and conclude that financial institutions will recover the tax from customers, and perhaps find ways to get the job done with fewer employees.

To the Editor, Beaver Creek still suffers frequent boilwater advisories.

The potential exists to begin work this summer on solving the problem, but little seems to be happening to realize this potential.

Proposals exist to build a new reservoir and to allow use of city water in times of excessive turbidity.

Unfortunately, the money available for this work can only be accessed after the improvement district (BCID) becomes a service area of the Regional District (ACRD) – a conversion mandated by referendum in October 2011, almost five months ago.

Sadly, the trustees of BCID do not appear to be seriously getting on with conversion, despite ACRD urgings. The ACRD has recently made a written request for decisions; on a final date for conversion and on acceptance of existing project proposals.

BCID’s apparent response has been to cancel the monthly board meeting (Mar. 19) at which these requests should have

been publicly aired and acted on.

Residents were given no notice (apart from a sheet pinned to the office door) or any reason for the cancellation.

This is not only discourteous but unacceptable. BCID should promptly re-schedule the cancelled meeting and let the public witness and make input to their response to ACRD’s requests.

The people of Beaver Creek deserve to have their trustees act, and be seen to act, positively and without delay.

The referendum decision must be implemented; with the water system placed under ACRD management and the proposed work initiated, as soon as possible.

Water issue quits flowing To the Editor, Last October, the people of Beaver Creek voted 73 per cent in favour of converting the Beaver Creek Improvement District (BCID) into a service area of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD).

Late last year, the ACRD committed $800,000 to infrastructure upgrades in 2012 and more recently applied for an additional $810,000 grant for a total of $1.61 million in water system improvements for Beaver Creek.

It was proposed that June 1 be a target date for conversion to enable work to commence in 2012 as these funds cannot be used for works that are not the responsibility of the ACRD. BCID was supposed to make a decision to move forward with the conversion at its regular monthly meeting in March, however, the meeting was cancelled. The note on the door did not specify why it was cancelled but said the next meeting will be held on April 16.

Rarely do leopards change their spots.

Chances are high that BCID trustees are up to the same game that they have been playing all along trying to maintain the status quo.

Is it time to rally the troops again? Doesn’t the voice of the people mean anything to them? The ACRD has put their best foot forward. It’s time for

BCID to do the same.

We must fend for ourselves To the Editor, Re: City can’t rely on outside aid, Letters, March 16.

Further to Trevor Jackson’s letter last week, I can’t stress enough that no one or no city should rely on the military to get you through hard times.

My husband and I endured 17 days without power during the Ice Storm in 1998 in Ontario. Many others had it much worse. To make matters worse, the train had pulled down several rows of ice laden power lines before it could stop and it blew major power boxes.

Thankfully the rec centre was opened for those who couldn’t manage at home and we could take showers. At least here you will have the new high school and Echo Centre that hopefully will have generators and become centres to house people.

The military did eventually show up, but had to ask for directions on how to get where they were going. That was the last we saw of them.

Both my husband and I are retired military personnel and if conditions weren’t so dire, we would have laughed.

Port Alberni is lucky to have a radio station.

In Ontario we did not and even though we listened to an Ottawa station, not once did they ever mention how the outer rural towns were doing, or when lines where going to be reinstated.

We ended up fending for ourselves and looking after elderly neighbours with hot meals from the barbecue. We donated all our freezer food to help feed those who stayed in the rec centre.

Make sure that you have lots of full propane tanks and candles on hand, batteries and a radio with its own power source, and don’t forget cash.

We have come to the realization that you have to learn to rely on yourselves as you can’t count on anyone else.

We agree too that now is the time to formulate a plan of action to help those who cannot help themselves.

One day last week we had the strangest weather - rain, snow, sunshine, hail, sunshine, rain and then the most perfect rainbow. Now I have seen many, many, rainbows but this one was perfect. Each of the colors was bright and distinct. As I stood there I thought how like life a rainbow is - one minute it can be bright and clear then something happens and it becomes blurred with the pain of a lost job, a sick family member and loss. During this time of Lent as we reflect on our lives and it would be well to remember the stories we learnt as children. In the book of Genesis chapter 9 we are told that the rainbow was sent for Noah. A promise that God’s words would remain a message carved for infinity, made to all mankind by God Almighty. Each of us will face our own storms of life but God always sends a rainbow.

Ty Watson House gets double boost Chili cookoff at Kingsway Potluck raises $15,000 SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The forecast for this Saturday, March 24 is a little chili, but patrons at the Kingsway Hotel can warm up with a Ty Watson House Hospice fundraiser.

The annual chili cookoff takes place at the Kingsway, with dinner ready for tasting between 6â&#x20AC;&#x201C;8 p.m. Tickets are $9.50 each and include chili tasting, salad, buns and dessert. Anyone who eats gets to vote on their favourite chili, says pub manager Pauline Arbanas.

Big Daddy brings live music to the stage from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and there is a free shuttle service.

The Kingsway fundraises for the hospice year-round, running weekly meat draws and other events. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a local charity and the money remains local, which I like,â&#x20AC;? Arbanas added.

The Port Alberni Fundraising Co-op will donate $15,070â&#x20AC;&#x201D;this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s net profit from Pot Luck Ceramicsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;towards the operating cost of Port Alberniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s local end of life care facility, Ty Watson House.

Pot Luck Ceramics, owned and operated by the Port Alberni Fundraising Co-op (PAFCo-op) is an attempt to change the way fundraising is done in the Alberni Valley, allowing charitable organizations to reduce their own local fundraising efforts and better focus on their mission.

The co-op is the first community service co-op in Canada operating for the sole purpose of supporting non-profit programs and services in the Alberni Valley.

Pot Luck Ceramics is located in a rustic barn in Cherry Creek, and sells Mediterranean terracotta cook and dinnerware, which the business imports from Catalonia in

It is the PAFCo-opâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal, said Swinkels, to completely close the gap in the Ty Watson House operating budget, before supporting the next non-profit service in the Alberni Valley.

A rental dispute with the city is forcing Harbour Quay’s Water’s Edge Restaurant to close its doors.

The last plate of food will be served at the five-year old waterfront eatery on March 31, owner operator Thomas Geiger said.

“I’ve been working in the business since I was 16 years old,” said Geiger, 48. “This is certainly not my choice.”

Geiger admits to being behind on his rent to the tune of $22,000. The seeds of the restaurant’s end were sown during last summer’s renovation of Harbour Quay, he said.

“I had no patio, no parking, there was dust and fumes, and pile drivers were working outside everyday,” Geiger said.

“I had to close until four o’clock in the afternoon and after that there was little business.”

But business has been picking up over the past two months and the spring and summer looked to be good.

Geiger said he approached the city with an offer to pay $10,000 of the rent with the balance payable over the spring and summer.

Geiger said he’ll be looking for another job, and would like to

one day open another restaurant. “But it will be very difficult after declaring bankruptcy.”

City economic development manager Pat Deakin said the city and owner have agreed to close the eatery by mutual agreement.

Deakin said he wasn’t aware of the renovation work last summer being an issue.

The closure leaves a big hole at the front of Harbour Quay that the city wants to fill in short order, Deakin said.

Unable to make a deal with the city to pay back rent, Thomas Geiger is forced to close Water’s Edge Restaurant. His last day of operation is March 31.

Transportation and its routes in and out of Port Alberni were hot button issues as business owners and politicians met with provincial MLA Kevin Krueger and the Small Business Roundtable, Tuesday at the Best Western Barclay.

An alternate highway into Port Alberni, reviving the rail and creating an industrial route were all discussed, as was establishing an Asian Pacific gateway through the port, Mayor John Douglas said.

Krueger said the city’s deepwater port could be a job generator for

the region, and he would take Port Alberni’s concerns to the minister of transportation.

Krueger and Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell created the roundtables in 2005.

Douglas said the meeting also offered people a chance to ask about expanding training, developing a seniors community as an economic driver, recreational tourism and bringing in institutions to create a wider curriculum.

“Things like a larger curriculum for trades, paramedicine, first responders and curriculum the Justice Institute offers,” he said.

Bulldogs celebrate team awards SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs handed out their year-end team awards at an event held at the AV Multiplex last week.

Josh Mitchell was the team’s top scorer, picking up 13 goals and 45 assists for 58 points in 59 games played this season.

Rookie of the year is Evan Tironese, from Qualicum Beach.

Tironese signed with the Bulldogs last July, and fulfilled the team’s requirement to have a 16-year-old on the active roster.

His presence was felt throughout the season, not just on paper.

He scored 14 goals— five on the power

Mitchell and team captain Trent Dorais were named the team’s MVPs for the year. Dorais also won

the coaches’ choice award.

Marlon Sabo was a triple award winner, picking up the fan’s choice award, educational award for high school students and also for most improved player.

He shared most improved with Tryg Strand.

Ryan Lough was the most sportsmanlike player and also won an educational award for college students.

Lars Hepso won the team’s humanitarian award. Walker Hyland was named the team’s best defenceman.

Strand and Artsiom Kalashnikov were the Bulldogs’ community heroes this year.

The team also recognized the 20-year-old players

leaving the team: Dorais, Hyland, Mitchell and goaltender Max Fenkell.

The Bulldogs finished sixth in the B.C. Hockey League’s Coastal Conference with 48 points in 60 games (22-34-2-2).

Because of the new post-season format that saw the top four teams advance with no bye round for first place this year, the Bulldogs did not make it to the playoffs.

Fashion has always been a focus in civilization, but perhaps never more so than in the last 100 years. Merlyn Patten of Qualicum Beach will bring proof to the Alberni Valley next month with a special fundraising show, 100 years of fashion.

Patten has been collecting vintage clothing ever since she picked up her first two pieces at a friend’s antique store.

The event will raise money for the Beta Sigma Phi’s legacy, which helps fund children’s programs at the AV Museum.

he Rainbow Room on Fourth Avenue in Port Alberni will be hopping on Saturday, March 31 when Emily Spiller graces the performance area.

A hint of Imogen Heap-meets-Zap Mama with a splash of Feist, Spiller blends jazz and blues with layered harmonies over vocal percussion as a one-woman show.

Nominated for five Vancouver Island Music awards in 2011, Spiller won

“Female Vocalist of the Year” shortly after returning from an Australian tour and a showcase at Canadian Music Fest in Toronto.

Spiller travels the globe as a duo with Vancouver’s Doc Prophet.

Armed with loop machines, laptops and microphones, they create live layers on stage like you’ve never heard before.

Doc Prophet is a producer, beat maker, beat boxer and multiinstrumentalist.

He says he’s “a man with a soul for all things music.”

Starting at age 10 with a guitar led to anything Prophet could get his hands on, from drums and bass to looping software and his big love: producing.

“When you needed something tougher than cedar then yew is what you used,” Ross said.

UBC has other Nuu-chahnulth artifacts, and there are periodically brisk sales of them online.

“I wouldn’t doubt that I see more of them for sale online after this donation,” Ross said.

The club will be displayed at the Museum of Anthropology in its Multiversity Galleries, which house more than 10,000 objects from around the world.

A rare ceremonial club given to explorer Captain James Cook

by Nuu-chah-nulth Peoples has been donated to the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology.

The club, according to a UBC news release, was donated by the Audain Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Valued at $1.2 million, the club is carved out of yew wood and is shaped like a human hand grasping a sphere. It was purchased from a private dealer in New York.

The club is said to have been given to Cook by Nuu-chah-nulth people during his final voyage in 1778. It is among the last traditional artifacts created before European contact.

The donation might encourage the repatriation of other pieces to public facilities such as UBC’s.

“While certain Nuu-chah-nulth objects collected by Cook exist in museums abroad — for example, in London, Berlin, and Vienna — this is the first and only in Canada,” said foundation chair Michael Audain.

Cook’s family sold the club to the Leverian Museum in London in 1806. From there, it passed through several private collections in Britain and the United States until it was obtained by the foundation.

The donation brings a sacred object closer to the living relatives of the ancestors who created it, but it’s not enough, said Tseshaht researcher and planner Darrell Ross.

“It would have been awesome if the donator went a step further to actually bring it back to Nuu-chahnulth.”

The club likely came from the Yoquaht portion of Nuu-chahnulth (near Gold River) where Cook enjoyed near exclusive trade relations with the Mowachaht people, Ross said.

The object likely isn’t a war club, which were usually made of whale

trips to the fashion capitals as the century progressed so women could see the fashions shortly after they hit the streets in Paris and London.

At the turn of the century social life in Canada was evolving and women required more and more fashionable clothing.

In Port Alberni, many of the clothing pieces on display on

the second floor are party pieces—good clothing only worn occasionally.

Not many of the everyday work clothes exist, centennial committee member Cathy Bagley said.

They were usually worn until they were threadbare, then were re-purposed as pieces of quilts or patches for other clothing. editor@albernivalleynews.com
