An introduction to the plant was given by plant manager Bryce Piggot.

The facility has been a part of the history of Golden for many decades according to Piggot who explained it started out as a sawmill before moving onto selling veneer. In the early 1970s the facility added a plywood plant which became a much greater commodity in the late 1980s and 1990s. “They decided to look at the engineered wood side of things. As trees which were available to harvest in North America got smaller you could get fewer 2x10s

and 2x12s out of them. The industry said ‘how do you make them again?’ They decided to look at engineered wood,� Piggot said. One of the main products produced at the plant these days is laminated veneer lumber (LVL). LVL is a structural product manufactured from thin peeled veneers of wood which is then glued with a durable adhesive. Panels of LVL are usually cut into structural members which have high strength and stiffness. continued on page 5

Often confused with an ancient Roman holiday, the Ides of March actually marks the start of Golden’s cycling season.

The annual exodus of pasty skinned Goldenites south to Moab, Fruita, Hurricane, Sedona and points south will be in full swing.

They will return bronzed and bruised and looking for more.

Unfortunately our local trails will likely still be covered with a blanket of crusty snow.

Fortunately the Golden Cycling Club anticipates this angst and will host an Events Night on April 3.

The first annual GCC Events Night will take place at Golden’s newly renovated Civic Centre.

Admission is free and treats and beverages are cheap and you’ll even see a free movie.

Better yet, since Golden’s trails belong to everyone, whether you have running shoes, boots, a horse or a bike you will be welcome.

They only request that you lend an ear to a brief discussion of what they hope to achieve in 2012 and beyond.

Suspect faces multiple charges after fire destroys house on Campbell Rd Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net On March 12 at 5:50 a.m., the Golden RCMP, the Nicholson Fire Department and members from the Golden Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 1539 Campbell Road in Nicholson.

The fire was fully involved upon their arrival, and the residence could not be saved.

In a press release from the RCMP on March 18, details about the investigation were updated. On March 16, an unidentified individual contacted the Golden/ Field RCMP and provided information which identified a suspect.

RCMP investigators interviewed other individuals who surfaced during the course of the ensuing investigation and identified two additional suspects.

According to the information gathered from the investigation to date, the owners of the residence have been absent since the middle of February. During their absence, the suspects broke into the residence repeatedly to party and caused malicious damage and stole property.

On March 11, two of the suspects entered the residence and set fires within.

They left when the smoke detectors activated. It was at this time the fire progressed to the point it was noticed by neighbours who contacted the Fire Department.

One young offender has been arrested and has been remanded in police custody to appear in Youth Court in Cranbrook on Monday March 19. The individual has been charged with Arson to Property, Break and Enter and Possession of Stolen Property.

The investigation is continuing, and the two other suspects identified have been interviewed and are expected to face charges.

Much of the property stolen from the residence has been recovered by the Police.

The Golden/Field RCMP are seeking assistance from anyone who observed anything, or has information which might aid their investigation.

Anyone who might be able to assist with this regard is encouraged to contact the RCMP at 344-2221 or make their report through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

A residence on Campbell Road in Nicholson went up in flames on March 12. The investigation is continuing, but as of now, one young offender has been charged with Arson to Property.

Getting back to work at Golden Concrete Ltd. Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net Golden Concrete Ltd. may have suffered a tough blow when a fire damaged the facility, but the workers have quickly got the business back on its feet and a will to make things even better in the future.

The fire did major damage to the office and shop area and also destroyed two trucks, a pumper, a loader and the whole plant said Operations Manager, Paul Ricard.

“We are going to replace the plant.

We are looking at the new plant now and have been talking to the Town of Golden to discuss the development

process,” said Ricard.

The business already has a portable plant on site which is up and operational so they can continue to provide concrete to the Donald Bridge project and the town as well.

“We do not want to leave the town without concrete...right now we are hauling concrete from Invermere and Revelstoke to supply the town,” Ricard said.

The extra cost of bringing in the concrete is not being passed on to the customers who have supported the business over the years.

Ricard went on to explain the company is already looking at getting a new plant and rebuilding a “Bigger

and Better” plant on the site, which he believes will also be even more environmentally friendly.

“It will be state of the art. The company is very environmentally friendly...I wish this didn’t happen but if you have a clean slate then you are going to correct things that we should have done last time,” Ricard said.

They will be using the portable plant for four to six weeks at which point the new plant will be purchased. Once they get the new plant in Golden the construction will then begin around the plant.

The plant should be up and running

by October at the latest according to Ricard.

HMC completes avalanche training HMC Services Submitted HMC Services recently conducted avalanche rescue training. The purpose of this training was to help ensure staff are prepared for the possibility of an avalanche impacting the highway and the need to conduct emergency rescue of a buried vehicle.

The training session involved a number of key personnel and stakeholders including: HMC, MoT, RCMP, and AvaTerra Services as well as a number of other supporting agencies.

The exercise included constructing a large mock

avalanche debris field complete with a buried piece of culvert to simulate the vehicle and stuffed clothing to simulate a victim.

Greg Ehman from HMC stated, “Regular training is an important part of ensuring the overall safety of the travelling public and this exercise provided the responders an opportunity to exercise their skills in a realistic field setting.”

Overall, it was an excellent training opportunity with the debrief providing a number of opportunities for improvement moving forward. Thank you to everyone who participated and for a job well done. A special thank you to all agencies that participated.

One of Canada’s largest retailers still offers a local, community vibe with local owners.

“The main thing is that we’re both from Golden, we understand the needs and desires of people around the area,” said owner of The Brick Rene Cote, who runs the store with sales manager Chad McPeak.

“Customer service is one of the biggest things we’ve been told by people, that they’re looking to have more personal service. And that’s what we want emphasis on here.”

Both Cote and McPeak have been residents of Golden for about 10 years. The previous owners of The Brick, who opened the store in June and ran it until February, were from Alberta.

“We are here to stay, and we want to make sure everyone is treated well and that we bring the highest quality of customer service possible,” said Cote, who worked for the previous owners before taking over the shop.

“They were very nice people, but the ways they were dealing with some of the issues coming up, wasn’t necessarily the direction I thought the store should take. And that was one of the reasons I decided to take over.”

As community members, Cote and McPeak are invested in helping Golden grow, and they hope that the Brick can contribute to that.

“We’re happy to have this in Golden because it gives everybody here the choices they would have in Calgary, without having to drive to the city. So they save time and a lot of fuel money,” said Cote.

“Since I’ve been here, people always says there’s no money in Golden, and Golden is struggling, and then people just go and spend their money in Calgary. To help the community we have to spend money locally, that’s the only way the money stays in town. So we want to make sure people want to buy from The Brick and have access to all these great products.”

The Brick is one of Canada’s largest retailers, selling furniture, mattresses, home decor and appliances. The Brick

“Because this is probably the world’s smallest Brick, obviously we can’t have everything in stock, there’s just way too many products. So we try to carry the core, and change them around,” said Cote.

The Brick carries two unique collections, both made in Canada. The Modesto, and the Choices line which allows the customer to custom order their furniture choosing the style, colour, and the configurations.

All orders come in on Thursdays, so as long as something is ordered by Tuesday afternoon, it will be in by the following Thursday. And if you don’t have a truck, no problem.

The Brick delivers every Thursday in Golden, Nicholson and Parson. They will also go further than Parson, as far as Invermere every second Thursday.

The plant was purchased in 1999

by LP which is based out of Nashville. Over the years the owners of the plant have been working hard to make it a more efficient and environmentally friendly business.

“This plant is fairly self contained.

We generate our own electricity as well as we provide the majority of our own energy. We have a biomass boiler so we take all the bark, sawdust and limbs and we burn it in our furnace,” Piggot said. The steam created from this process of collecting the left over and waste parts of the trees is used to provide heat for the dryers used at the plant. The dryers are used on the veneer wood to dry the product.

The plant also has some energy left over which it uses.

“We superheat that steam up to about 700 degrees and we put that through our turbine to generate electricity. We are a net seller of electricity when we are not running.

On the weekends we export electricity to the grid for BC Hydro.”

Piggot explained this makes the plant a much more environmentally friendly facility.

He also explained about the different sources of emissions which come from the plant.

“One is our cooling pond, and that is where the biggest plume of the white you see going up. We take the hot water that we use to create

the steam, and we run it through sprinklers outside. That is when you see, in the winter, the white plume going up. It is our heated water evaporating as we try to cool it enough to re -ondense steam back into water,” Piggot said.

He then spoke about the two precipitators which are scrubbers used to clean the smoke coming off of the process in making the veneer.

“What you see coming up is a white plume and, when you see this it is moisture...that is what the people will see when you are up at the ski hill. We used to be at about 40 per cent to remove the smoke now we are at about 98 per cent with the scrubbers,” he added.

Piggot said in a valley like this it is very important not to be sending out large amounts of smoke because at times it would be very difficult to get it out of the area.

On the tour people are given the chance to see the whole process from start to finish. They see logs being loaded into the peeler right to one of the final stages where the veneer is pressed together.

People are given the chance to not only see how things work at the facility but also ask questions to tour guides who have a vast knowledge about what you get to see.

“We are proud of this operation and many of the people who work here are long term employees,” Piggot said.

Comfort Zone Being comfortable with who you are is not always an easy thing to do.

The sad fact of life is that judgement happens every day.

People look at what you wear, if you should lose a few pounds and many other ways to see where we need to be better.

But what is better?

I get the idea of doing - My Way something for yourself if By Darryl Crane it makes you feel better but why should we have to conform to a certain look to achieve your goals or feel better about ourselves.

This all stems from reading about Jann Arden posing naked for a magazine.

Part of the idea is for people to be comfortable with themselves.

An idea that gets lost in the shuffle too many times in the world today.

While in university a discussion came up over how people are judged and I made the point we seem to be judged from the instant someone sees you until you get back to being in your home.

This is not a new idea but we should look at how it affects the mind.

If you are constantly told you have to live up to some barbie doll appearance or you have to be ripped and full of muscles to be appreciated that causes issues at some point.

DNA is a tragedy for all of us to look and be the same. I have the curse of the “Crane Belly” I have to live with.

To be human is not to be so called perfect. We are all perfect the way we are when it comes to how we look.

And why would we all want to be the same.

Wouldn’t life be boring if somehow everyone looked like the “perfection” as found on the pages of magazines.

After not seeing some friend for many years I was asked if I was going to do something to try and slow my hair on top from disappearing.

I found that funny because the hair in my estimation doesn’t make the man.

Currently I am trying to control my weight and eat a little healthier.

I try to walk a couple of times a day on my days off and not buy those tasty cookies that I have a weakness for.

I am not doing this because of what society sees as being perfect but more because I know I should drop a bit of weight and to feel better physically.

We should not be constantly beaten down about all the things that we could do to make ourselves thinner, prettier or better.

So no matter if you are on the pages of a magazine or not, you should be happy with who you are and how you are different .

Embrace the imperfections because that is part of what makes us unique.

Fair treatment for seniors Seniors deserve a fair and accurate driver assessment program

And I have clearly stated that it not reasonable to ask seniors in the East Kootenay to travel such a vast distance to be tested.

In my last MLA report, I laid out some of the issues that had been raised with me by seniors about a driver fitness assessment program called DriveABLE. The first concern was that the testing was only available in Kelowna or Nelson making it very difficult for seniors in this area to access the test.

And the second concern was that the test which is done using a modified computer screen was intimidating and confusing.

At first glance, the DriveABLE issue is one of fairness to rural

But on further study, primarily done by my colleague in the Legislature Nicholas Simons, we have discovered that the difficulties with DriveABLE go much deeper than a simple lack of access.

The BC government’s move towards this particular driver assessment program has been called into question by a number of experts.

And seniors are demanding answers.

Drivers’ fitness assessments have

traditionally been done by doctors and it is not clear that a move to a computerized test is the best method of determining cognitive function.

And it is even less clear that DriveABLE, a private company, offers the best of the computerized programs available.

Seniors are required to take the DriveABLE computer test based on a screening process performed by their doctor.

Doctors are now required to use a screening test called SIMARD MD, a test that has also raised concerns.

And we all accept that we need to have a way to ensure that drivers’ abilities are assessed as they age.

New faces on Chamber board

Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net The Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce Welcomed two new board members this week with the appointment of Flec Demmon and Dave Hamilton Demmon is a long time resident of Golden who works at Remax in Golden.

He moved to the area in 1984 and has enjoyed his time working with other groups.

As for how he joined the board he said “They begged and pleaded. (he said laughing) I used to be on the Golden Area Initiatives board and after stepping off that board I was looking for something where I could continue serving the community.”

Demmon has served on various boards throughout his time in Golden including the the Whitetooth Ski Society where he held many different positions.

Demmon stressed the importance of all of the business community in Golden coming together during these tough economic times.

He also feels local people and and businesses have to get on the same page to help the community.

As for his role on the board Demmon said he wants to take awhile to learn about what they do and is excited to be starting with a group which he described as being very active in Golden.

“It (the Chamber) has a real tough job to do but I am up for the challenge,” he said.

He may be new to the area but Hamilton has a long history of working with chambers in other parts of British Columbia.

“I have sat on many chamber boards including Comox Valley, Elkford and Fernie, and have lots of board experience including seven years on the BCSPCA Provincial Board of Directors with two years on the Executive and Strategic Planning committee,” Hamilton said.

“I am excited to help grow the chamber to advocate for local businesses.”

Protecting the future of Golden For five plus years, Golden has been lobbying the government at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) meetings to secure funds for the necessary dike improvements critical to protecting our downtown.

In January we received confirmation that the Golden Kicking Horse River Diking project (also known as Bridge to Bridge)

has finally been approved for up to $2.24 million in federal/provincial funding.

The primary objective is flood control improvements to bring the dike up to the 200 year flood level thereby providing protection for the Historical Downtown.

The project is multifaceted and incorporates a number of secondary benefits.

Not only will the flood risk be addressed but also we

will have the opportunity to enhance tourist and pedestrian amenities, beautify and landscape a key part of our community and remove the poles and underground the utilities. This project is another step of the ongoing transformation of the downtown with a focus on both containing and embracing the Kicking Horse River.

Next steps: The completion date is the end of 2013.

Because of the scope and scale of the project, the tight timelines and short construction season, council have directed staff to prepare a loan authorization bylaw thereby allowing for the borrowing of the municipal portion.

This equates to funds up to $2.3 million.

Given that once completed the project will provide benefits for current

and future generations, this loan will be a 30 year loan with the Municipal Finance Authority.

In striving to deliver quality public services in a fiscally responsible and transparent manner council is seeking electoral assent to borrow these funds.

In the weeks to follow, we will provide ongoing project details through the media and the town website.

Anti-Bully Workshops, School Musical, Stream of Dreams Ian Robinson Lady Grey and Field Elementary Schools Principal At Lady Grey students and staff are currently on their Spring Break.

April will be filled with activities starting with Education Week April 2-6.

As part of our ongoing efforts to make Lady Grey “Bully Free”, we are pleased to anticipate a Red Cross Anti-Bullying workshop entitled “Beyond the Hurt.”.

This comprehensive program offers training to students during the day and an adult workshop in the evening.

We will host the evening workshop on Wed-

nesday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lady Grey Gym. It is important for family and community members to join us in our quest to better understand and therefore be better able to prevent bullying.

A huge thank you to our PAC for funding these workshops.

Rehearsals will be underway again for our play this year called “No Strings Attached.”

Public performances will be on April 24, 25 at 7 p.m. at the Golden Civic Centre.

The Grade 6/7 basketball team played Windermere Elem at Lady Grey and returned to Invermere last week to play three schools.

Our school wide environmental awareness project is coming along nicely.

We have hundreds of wooden fish being cut out by the Robertson and Bolt families in preparation for the art portion of the event.

During the week of April 30-May 2 we will be having watershed awareness and fish painting workshops culminating in putting our decorated fish on our school fence.

Folks wishing to help out with the preparation of the fish, the art workshops or the hanging of the fish on the fence, please contact the school.

In closing, I would like to thank our Parent Advisory Council for all the hard work they do to make our school the best it can be.

In particular, thanks to our PAC and parents in organizing our lunch program.

Field School Happenings Spring is just starting to make an appearance in Field and we’re ready for it!

We’ve just finished skating lessons in Golden and the children loved it. We also had the last cross-country ski lesson.

Our wind up was a treasure hunt at Lake Louise. Who doesn’t like following a map and finding Kinder Eggs buried in the snow!

We’ve been enjoying the company of Emily, a teaching student from the University of Calgary, and she has been doing some great science units with the students.

Behind the Wheel Radar and Laser Jammers

Radar and laser detectors are currently legal to install in your vehicle and use to avoid prosecution for failing to follow the speed limits in British Columbia. One has to ask why BC is one of the few provinces in our country that has not made this illegal. If you think like I do, inappropriate speed is a significant contributor to collisions and should not be encouraged in any way. Radar and laser detectors are encouraging some drivers to drive at inappropriate speeds every day.

Radar and laser jammers are another matter entirely. While they are not illegal to install they are illegal to use to defeat police speed measurement. In fact, if you are successfully prosecuted for using them, you will have a criminal record that could prove to be a significant handicap to you later in life. The offence is in obstructing a peace officer in the execution of his duty, in this case speed measurement.

Laser jamming devices are the most commonly found because modern lidar units warn their operator that they are being jammed. Since the vehicle being targeted is known precisely, it is easy to flag the driver out of traffic and start an investigation to confirm the source of the jamming. If found, the jamming equipment will be seized and kept to present as evidence at trial. If convicted, the equipment will be forfeit in addition to any other penalty imposed by the court.

Are you willing to trade the possibility of a fine and a few penalty points for the possibility of a criminal record? Think twice about the “legal counsel” provided by the producers and sellers of jamming equipment.

Landing on their feet after escaping the chute Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net I don’t know what would have been more frightening for the athletes at the Wrangle the Chute competition, jumping off massive cliffs and hoping they land on their feet, or trying to stay on top of E.J. Hector while your competitors try to buck you off.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s fourth annual Wrangle the Chute was a success this year as athletes from all over Canada and the United States enjoyed 24 centimetres of fresh powder over the two-day event.

“Today is day one of two, and today has been absolutely fantastic,” said Eric Whittle, director of sales and marketing for Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. “We’ve had lots of snow, a lot of happy people watching at the bottom. Just great conditions to be hanging out here.”

Hundreds of spectators, some there for the day while others stopped by for awhile before they continued on their run, watched skiers and snowboarders brave the treacherous mountain terrain, and then kick

off their gear and jump on the buck for a wild ride.

“So we have the big mountain free-ride competition, but then the neutralizer is that you’ve got the horse. And your fellow competitors are the ones that try to knock you off,” said Whittle of E.J. Hector, the buckin bronco that each competitor must ride after crossing the finish line.

E.J. Hector, pronounced ejector, is a horse held up by four bungee cords. The athletes jump on, and hold on for dear life as competitors shake Hector from all four corners.

“It has certainly become an iconic event for us, and we’re seeing past winners coming in, and other rippers trying to build on what they did previous years,” said Whittle.

“We have just over 50 athletes that are in the event this year. They’re all qualified athletes, you have to submit your resume to be part of the Wrangle the Chute competition.”

Golden Youth Action Group hires new Co-ordinator with CBT Community Directed Youth Funds Youth Group Submitted

The Youth Action Group (YAG) is a group of youth and community representatives who meet weekly to help move forward youth priorities in Golden We successfully submitted an expression of interest to Columbia Basin Trust and now receive $25,000/year for

the next four years.

Our first priority was to hire a Youth Co-ordinator to help lead and move forward on the priority identified by youth in Golden—developing a youth centre.

We received eighteen applications and collaboratively narrowed the field to four who were interviewed.

We decided that Sara Nichols (née Davis) had the right experience,

qualifications and enthusiasm to move the project forward.

In order to support the project, Golden Area Initiatives (GAI) has provided office space and manages the contract for the project. Suzanne McCrimmon, GAI manager, notes that, “The hiring process was unique not only because youth participated in the hiring process but also because it allowed youth to gain

experience in the hiring process which will help build their employment skills.”

Kailyn Trask, a member of the YAG, said, “it was a great experience to be a part of something real [the hiring process].

So often, at school, we just do things in theory. It was great to know that we had the power to make decisions.”

Sara officially started her new position on March 8. She brings experience in community development, project management, and public engagement from previous work at Columbia Basin Trust and the Golden Women’s Resource Centre (GWRC) as well as a Masters degree in public administration.

She’s worked with golden youth before as the former co-ordinator of the GWRC’s Girlz Group.

“I’m so excited to get started. I think the time is right for this project. The community has talked about a youth centre for many years but I feel we

Cheesecake Revue brings Sass, Sequins and a whole lot of fun Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net A show unlike any other is getting set to come to the stage at the Golden Civic Centre on April 20 when the Cheesecake Burlesque Revue performs.

The group has travelled the world putting on shows filled with sequins, glamour and sass.

One of the founding members of the group is Champagne Sparkles who explained what it is about the group that she enjoys.

“I love the sisterhood I have with my fellow Cheesecakes, the empowering effect we have on people (especially women) in our audiences, and the ridiculous amount of fun I get to have creating, rehearsing, travelling and performing.”

Over the years the troupe has become much more busy as their fame has spread.

“This past year was a whirlwind of touring around B.C. and performing a lot in our hometown of Victoria - everything from our seasonal shows, to fundraisers, outdoor festivals and parades, and everything in between. We also had more success on an international scale - in 2011 we performed as a troupe at the Vancouver and New York International Burlesque Festivals and had solo performers also at those festivals, as well as at the New Orleans and Paris festivals! It’s been quite a ride,” Sparkles said.

Along with the show the ladies will also be holding a SASS 101 class in Golden on March 19. This will give local ladies the chance to learn from the Cheesecake performers.

“Our Sass Class 101 is an introduction to burlesque workshop and it is always a super fun time, and very inspiring and energizing. It’s fabulous to see the ladies hit their stride, creating burlesque names and be bumping, grinding, shimmying and tassel twirling by the end of the day. I think the ladies leave the class feeling happier, freer, and are part of a sassy secret club (imagine seeing your fellow classmates in line at the bank or super market you’ll all have little knowing smiles on your faces),” Sparkles said.

“Prepare yourself for a few hours of great, giggly, girly fun. We will teach you a little bit about where burlesque comes from, help you access your inner burlesque diva through movement and creating a burlesque name, teach you how to twirl tassels and give you a chance to shake your thing. We create a safe, open place to play - this is your chance to glitter up and be fabulous. Grab your girlfriends and join us.”

As for the show Sparkles said, “It’s a vaudevillian style variety show - dancing, comedy, singing - all centred around the classic art form of striptease. Our show is cheeky, funny and a little bit sexy.

It’s lots of tease and no sleaze. And for the curious folks... we always have nipple tassels and panties on. There is something in our show for everyone - it’s a great girls night out or a fabulous date.”

Although every person may take something different from a Cheesecake Burlesque show Sparkles has her own ideas on what she hopes people take away from a performance.

“I hope everyone leaves with a smile on their face, a strut in their step, their cheeks and bellies hurting from laughing so hard, and a pair of pasties to try tassel twirling at home,” she said. “I think that there are a lot of different ideas out there about what burlesque is and there are also a lot of different styles of burlesque.

The Cheesecake style is a lot of fun, we incorporate story telling and humour into many of our acts and we don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’re a group of regular ladies who work hard to put on a great show. Audiences find us relatable - we all have other professions, some of us have kids and we are a diverse range of ages and sizes. Something for everyone! And we love to come out and meet people after the show - so stick around for a chat.”

In the end, she loves being on stage and also the message the troupe sends out to people everywhere. “It is exhilarating and so much fun. I love the communication between the audience and performer - performing and hearing a response is such a thrill,” she said. “We are all fabulous no matter what age, shape or size we currently happen to be.”

Sparkles added, “This really is a fun and accessible show - even my Grandma has come out to see us and loved it. I think that people are often surprised how much they laugh and how good it feels to have a chance to hoot and holler at a show.”

Gentlemen prepare to kick off 2012 Golden Film Festival Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The Golden Film Festival has been taken over by some local gentlemen, who are putting their own touch on the popular annual event.

“We thought that taking over the Film Festival was a great idea because it was an already established event that people in the community like.

We didn’t want to see it die, people look forward to it, so we really wanted to keep it going. It was a great fit for our club,” said Eric Prasloski, member of the Gentlemen’s Leisure Club of Golden.

Prasloski has been a member of the community organization since its inception in November of 2011.

“We are a non-profit, and our first aim is to provide community events to get the community all together. We did the ski-swap, we did the

mustache competition, and now we’re doing the Film Festival,” said Prasloski.

“And our secondary goal is to use any extra funds that we may have to help kids in the community, and get them into sports and things like that.”

The Golden Film Festival has had four successful years, but it was looking as though the people of Golden might lose it.

The festival’s founder Cliff Markham, a freelance camera operator who is now based primarily out of Vancouver, was looking for someone to take on the project in October.

“I would really hate to see it disappear,” said Markham. “But I just don’t have the time anymore, and unfortunately, I’m not going to be in Golden enough.”

Soon after that, the newly formed Gentlemen’s Leisure Club of Golden decided they could take

on the task.

“We thought that taking over the Film Festival was a great idea because it was an already established event that people in the community like.

We didn’t want to see it die, people look forward to it, so we really wanted to keep it going. It was a great fit for our club,” said Prasloski.

The three-day festival will show roughly eight hours worth of films at the Golden Cinema and the RecPlex. There will be non-alcoholic refreshments, and food from Carlito’s.

“We have about 30 movies to play. Some still might not make it, we still have judging to do. We opened it up world wide this year, but our priority is the Kootenays, then British Columbia, then wherever,” said Prasloski.

“People can send us stuff from wherever. If something comes from the other side of the world and it’s amazing, we’re going to want to

play it. There’s going to be quite a bit of skiing and snowboarding videos. But there will also be a couple documentaries, some paddling movies, and there’s some interesting short films that people put together.”

The festival runs from March 28 to 30. The first two nights will take place at the Golden Cinema, each featuring two hours of films.

And the final night will be at the RecPlex where they will be showing four hours of movies.

Admission for Wednesday and Thursday night is $10 at the door, and tickets for Friday’s show at the RecPlex is $20. There are also threeday passes available for $30. Tickets are available at Plain Wayne and Jane, or from any of the Gentlemen’s Club members.

Animals come to Rockwater Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net The Rockwater will once again be bringing a unique mix of music to Golden when Animal Nation performs on Monday April 9.

After forming in 2004 the band has taken their sound across Canada and will be on tour throughout April.

In June they will be heading out to Toronto for NXNE and in July they’re set to play the Vancouver Island Music Festival.

Previously they have been involved with shows at the 2010 Olympics, Pemberton Festival, and multiple other festivals.

According to the band, their shows are “really really interactive, fun-for-allgenre-lovers group that will absolutely have the crowd smiling and having a great time.”

One of their goals is to do things with their live show that hip-hop has never seen before.

The two MCs also play a wide array of instruments both on stage and in studio and have recently released a new album with their label, URBNET The band found Canada-wide exposure by both being cast in supporting roles in MTV’s television show Peak Season as well as licensing several of our songs to the show.

“Our style is laid-back, west coast indie hip-hop and we find that we place well with fans of hip-hop, indie-rock, folk, or even punk,” Garnet Clare said.

The band is fronted by two MCs- Mike Armitage (Armadillo Slim) is on vocals as well as the decks and Garnet Clare (Tall Man) adds keys, harmonica, banjo, live percussion and other unique musical elements to their show.

A Masterful week in Golden Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net Though the weather provided some challenges for race organizers and participants the Nordic Masters Event at the Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre was a huge success. “It really could not have gone better. We had some challenging ski conditions but the team we had in place overcame all our obstacles. The whole community supported this event to such a degree that people are going

to go away very impressed with Golden and the level of hospitality they received here,� said Jeff Dolinsky, President of the Golden Nordic Club.

In all over 150 participants came out for the week long event which saw racers face conditions which went from icy to perfect. “When you have 156 volunteers who can co-ordinate an outdoor event with over 30 kms of ski trail in wild snow conditions, it shows the resilience and strength of the community,� Dolinsky said. “It will be a super memory for everyone.�

Local gymnast makes provincials Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The Kicking Horse Gymnastics Club competed in the Key City Fiesta Invitational competition in Cranbrook on March 3 and 4, and returned home with some impressive results.

Fifteen-year-old Kelsey Lloyd qualified for provincials, taking place in Vancouver on April 13.

“This is the first time I’ve made provincials,” said Lloyd. “I’m pretty excited about it.”

“I’m so proud of my kids,” said coach Christina Muise. The gymnasts from Golden don’t have the facilities that kids from other clubs have, but Muise says they compete as though they do.

She coaches nearly 160 kids each week at the RecPlex, using equipment that has been accumulated over the years. The group often travels to Cranbrook to practice in the facilities there.

The gymnasts here in Golden compete at a level you wouldn’t think possible says Muise. Not only did Lloyd make it to provincials, but her teammates 14-year-old Jasmine Wan, and 17-year-old Makayla

Beam were listed as wildcards, meaning they may get to go as well.

“That competition went pretty good, (Cranbrook qualifier). I wasn’t really nervous,” said Lloyd who goes to three competitions a year with the Kicking Horse Gymnastics Club.

“I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was little, but not really with a steady coach. So with Christine, it’s been about three years.”

Lloyd competes in all the events, including floor, beam, bars and vault. And the difficulty level in both her floor and beam routines was the highest in her division says Muise.

“I’m not sure what event my best is. I really like floor, that’s probably my favourite,” said Lloyd. Aside from a bit of skiing, gymnastics is Lloyd’s activity of choice, and she hopes to continue with it for several years to come.

But right now she has provincials in Vancouver to focus on.

“I think my parents are pretty excited. They always watch me compete,” she said. “Christina might come with me as well, she’s not sure yet.”

A history of fines, crimes and the occasional donnybrook We have so many wonderful, sometimes serious and sometimes amusing historical artifacts in our archive, that I thought I might share some of the daily notes recorded by the keeper of the prisoners in Golden’s Gaol (old fashioned spelling of jail).

I have had to do a bit of editing for privacy as well as saying things in the ‘politically correct� way but there are some gems.

If I have missed something that may not be entirely correct, please

keep in mind that it was 100 years ago.

We have prisoners’ effects books and gaol books from the Donald Gaol, starting in 1895 but while they have great bits of information, the fellow recording the information in the gaol book seemed more interested in recording the daily weather conditions than he was in reporting what was happening around town.

The Aquatic Worker 2 requires additional accreditation as a Lifesaving Instructor and with a least a full season of experience as an Aquatic Worker 1 or equivalent.

The Aquatic Worker 3 requires even further experience being a full season as An Aquatic Worker 2 or equivalent combined with a thorough knowledge of municipal swimming pool policies and procedures. Accreditation as a BCRPA Level 1Pool Operator is an asset. The position also holds a larger degree of responsibility for monitoring daily pool operations.

Green is showing through at the Golden Golf Club Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net About half a dozen volunteers trekked through the slush to help clear the ice and snow off of the greens at the Golden Golf Club.

"Having volunteers is everything. If we didn't have them, we wouldn't be able to do it," said Patrick Chury, general manager of the Golden Golf Club.

The 18-hole course has 20 greens that need tending to. And this year the volunteer crews are at it a little earlier than usual.

"This is a bit early. We normally don't have to scrape snow off or anything.

But unfortunately, this winter we had an ice layer built up on the greens," said Chury.

"The ice was so thick this year, and we were concerned about the grass

not being able to breath," said Daniel Komarniski, who works maintenance at the golf course. "So we really wanted to release those gasses."

Volunteers, most of whom are members at the club, had already been out for a week clearing the greens.

"It would be nice if we had perfect weather where we can work right through, but I think we'll be at it for another two weeks," said Chury.

"It needs to be 5 degrees roughly during the day, that way the snow is soft and the ice is softer and we can remove it without too much damage to the greens."

If everything goes well, Chury is hoping the course will be open in less than two months.

"We're shooting for May 3 for an opening date, but it is very weather dependent."

FUNDING FOR STUDENTS, NOT FOR WAGE HIKES. The BCTF is demanding a 15 per cent wage hike and other benefits that would cost $2 billion and raise taxes for BC families. Virtually all other public sector unions have settled for no wage increases.

It’s unacceptable that schools are disrupted and that students and their families are inconvenienced over an unreasonable salary demand in difficult economic times. The union is making claims and demands that simply don’t add up.

BCTF CLAIMS AND DEMANDS

The union wants more paid time outside the classroom – sick leave for teachers on call, expanded bereavement and discretionary leave.

The government wants more time for teacher training and to ensure that Pro-D days really are for professional development.

The union says all teaching positions should be selected on the basis of seniority.

The government supports seniority but qualifications must also count so that math teachers teach math, and science teachers teach science.

The union says that teachers who perform poorly in evaluations will be dismissed – ‘one strike and you’re out’.

The government wants to support teacher improvement through a standardized evaluation process.

The union says that government refuses to negotiate.

There has been over a year of negotiations and 78 full bargaining sessions.

The union says that class size limits have been eliminated.

Class size limits will remain in place on all grades across BC.

The union says that BC has 700 fewer special needs teachers.

2100 new teaching assistants have been hired since 2001. And, with a new $165 million Learning Improvement Fund, we will hire more.

It’s time to focus on what matters most in education – BC’s students. That’s why we are focused on per-student funding which is at an all time high, not on wage increases.

We all want to do more to make BC’s education system even better. It’s the driving force behind BC’s Education Plan that teachers, parents and students are helping to shape.
