The 2011 Grey Cup Champion BC Lions will take to the basketball court in Abbotsford on Friday, as they take on the St. John Brebeuf Bears in a fundraiser for a Grade 8 boy battling cancer.

It’s Josh’s second fight with the disease. He has rhabdomyosarcoma, which was first diagnosed just days after his birthday in December of 2009.

(The family has requested that their last name not be published.)

The soft-tissue cancer tumour was in remission after treatment until it was diagnosed again in January.

When a former employee of Josh’s father heard the news, she turned to her current employer Kim Chapdelaine, the wife of BC Lions offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jacques Chapdelaine.

Options: Metro, create a new district, or make up with FVRD

The B.C. minister of community has told Mayor Bruce Banman that Abbotsford can’t become its own regional district.

Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, said she would entertain a redrawing of boundaries that could include neighbouring municipalities such as Mission and rural areas.

“I would be interested in seeing what that would look like, and the level of support for it,” Chong told The News.

Banman met with Chong on Feb. 21 to outline Abbotsford’s case for leaving the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD).

Under former mayor George Peary, council decided in 2011 to leave the FVRD and form its own district, as a costsaving measure.

Chong said the regional district system in B.C. sees virtually all municipalities as part of regional districts, so districts with common interests can collaborate on regional growth and services, such as parks, planning and public transportation.

As a candidate, he campaigned against leaving the FVRD, but was out-voted at the council table in a December debate on the issue.

Banman said this issue boils down to power and money.

“Abbotsford pays approximately 49 per cent of the cost (of the FVRD), and has 25 per cent of the say,” he said.

That “say” is a weighted 25 votes at the FVRD council table, out of a total 59 votes.

He noted that with the new census Abbotsford should receive more votes at the FVRD table. Also, the FVRD has reduced Abbotsford’s financial contribution by more than $600,000. So the city is getting more power while paying less, said Banman.

He has asked the FVRD for a list of what the city pays for and how it benefits from membership in the district – including the less tangible benefits.

He’ll take that list back to the council table.

Banman predicted council will ultimately reverse course and choose to stay in the FVRD.

More crash claims launched Husband of pregnant woman killed in crash sues ICBC and drivers

The husband of a pregnant pedestrian who was killed in a chain-reaction crash two years ago in Abbotsford has joined his mother-in-law in filing civil claims for financial compensation.

Kevin Wilson is suing ICBC and the drivers of two vehicles involved in the collision, and filed claims in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver on March 7.

His wife, Laurel, was seven months’ pregnant with their daughter Chloe when she was killed on her 27th birthday – March 13, 2010.

The News reported in its March 8 edition that his wife’s mother, Melody Jewell, had filed three notices of civil claim on March 2, seeking compensation for the death of her husband (and Laurel’s father), Ralph Jewell, 66.

The husband of Laurel Wilson has filed civil claims against those involved in the crash that took her life in 2010.

Cochrane ran a red light and collided with a Honda Prelude driven by Breanne Gale.

The Prelude spun into the pedestrians. Wilson and Chloe died in hospital soon after. Ralph was seriously injured and spent the next six months in hospital, where he died on Sept. 15, 2010.

Kevin sustained minor injuries.

Cochrane, 25, pleaded guilty to driving with undue care and attention and was sentenced last July to a lifetime driving ban. Gale was not charged or ticketed.

Kevin and Melody have each filed three civil claims – one against ICBC; one against Cochrane, Gale and Cameron Edwards (the owner of the car driven by Gale) for punitive, special and general damages; and one against the same three individuals for lost income.

Gale has filed two civil claims – against Cochrane and ICBC. Dairn Shane, the lawyer for both Kevin and Melody, said last week that the matter could take several years to decide, due to its complex nature and the number of claimants involved.

always very involved in the community and whenever they can they take the opportunity to help those in need around them,” explains Alicia Borsoi, who has worked for Kim Chapdelaine’s S.O.A.R. Training for 10 years.

She knew that the Chapdelaines would have two days with the Grey Cup, and had in the past held a fundraising event for a teenaged boy at an Abbotsford high school.

The couple supported the idea and together with Borsoi approached the principal at the Catholic high school about organizing the fundraiser with the BC Lions.

“I hope people will enjoy the evening, have fun with the Grey Cup and the Lions, but focus on Josh and how as a group we can do anything,” says Kim Chapdelaine, who with Borsoi has arranged for the pride of B.C. football to come and try their skill at shooting baskets against the senior boys team.

Spectators will get a chance to enjoy the game and meet the BC Lions players, as well as have a photo taken with the Grey Cup for a donation.

Josh is planning to be at the game, says his mother, Cheryle.

He will start his second course of chemotherapy the following week, which is physically challenging for him. Josh’s father, Angelo, and brother Costa, a university student, help to distract the 13-year-old from the nausea by playing Xbox games with him.

“The tumour is hidden behind his cheekbone and he is undergoing treatment,” Cheryle explains.

“He has an MRI in a few weeks to assess it and because of the location we go from there.”

There is no surgeon in British Columbia who will attempt to operate

on Josh’s tumour, and they are awaiting word from a surgeon at the Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Boston, MA. The provincial medical plan will pay the medical fees, but not the travel and associated costs.

“It’s very humbling that people would do this for our family,” says Cheryle.

“Josh and his older sister Monica are fairly new to this school, and they have totally taken my kids in and taken care of them. They’re family.”

The students at SJB held a talent show as a fundraiser recently, raising about $3,000 for the family.

“I think the fundraising for Josh that St. John Brebeuf is doing is magnificent. They put in so much support and effort,” says Monica, who is in Grade 10 and devoted to her little brother.

Their principal, Ted Brennan, agrees the school community has rallied around Josh, who he says always has a smile on his face.

“Josh is an amazing young man. The other students want to help and they are

fundraising and have offered prayers, masses and done works of kindness all in his name. Our goal is to raise over $4,000 Friday night.”

A parent at the school is offering his GAMES2U carnival games for the event for a $1 donation a try, as well as running a giant hamster ball race at half time.

“If we can add a bit of a bright light to this event and help with the fundraising at the same time, then we’re happy to give of our time because we wouldn’t miss this game,” says Daren Alary, master franchiser for GAMES2U in Canada with his business partner Eric Carter.

Alary’s son is in Grade 11 and will be playing in the game against the Lions, and his daughter is in Josh’s class.

Capacity for the match between the Canadian Football League greats and the high school seniors is 600. Donations for Josh and his family will also be accepted at the school office.

Josh is pumped about the event: “I am very amazed by all the attention I am getting in this past month. I feel very special that the BC Lions are coming to SJB, and very excited to see them and the Grey Cup. Imagine, these are the Grey Cup champions and they are coming for me! This is huge! I can’t wait to see how football players can play basketball. It will be a very interesting game.

“To the organizers – especially Mr. Brennan and Mr. and Mrs. Jacques Chapdelaine – I am very thankful for their support and help as this will make it a lot easier for my parents.

“When my parents told me that my cancer was back I was very upset and sad. When I found out that the students and teachers at SJB have been praying for me, it has given me hope again.

“I feel very lucky and thankful to have so many friends.”

Upper Fraser Valley Habitat for Humanity will build its second home in the city since 2007.

Chairman Doug Rempel said the organization, which builds homes in partnership with families in need, has purchased a private property on the southeast corner of Farmer Road and Sumas Way. He said Habitat hopes to start construction on the

property, purchased for $142,000, by mid-August.

Architectural plans call for a two-storey, three-bedroom home with an unfinished basement, valued at $170,000.

Habitat homes are constructed using volunteer labour and some donated materials. Property costs and other expenses are covered through fundraising and donations.

The selected family pays a monthly mortgage of no more than 30 per cent of their gross income.

Raise driving age The teenage boy who died in the head-on collision recently in Maple Ridge was violating conditions of his driver’s learning permit.

Dawson Spencer, 17, was driving a mini-van with two male passengers. It crossed the centre line and collided with a car carrying three young girls, one of whom also died.

Police said the van was weaving in and out of traffic. Speed and inexperience were definitely factors.

Spencer shouldn’t have been driving after midnight, based on restrictions under ICBC’s graduated licensing program. Nor should he have had any passengers with him. The female driver of the other vehicle in the crash was a novice, under ICBC regulations, and shouldn’t have had more than one passenger.

B.C. introduced the graduated licensing program for a reason – to reduce fatalities among young drivers. And it has worked. Since it was introduced in 1998, fatal crashes involving drivers 15 to

19 years old have fallen 65 per cent.

But it doesn’t go far enough. Teens can’t vote or drink until they’re 19; a 16-year-old can’t even see an R-rated movie alone. Yet, they can drive dad’s car.

Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers. Our roads are cluttered with roadside memorials.

Speeding is often to blame, as is alcohol, inexperience, immaturity.

The legal age to drive in B.C. should be raised to at least 18, as it is around much of the world.

It may not seem fair to penalize all young drivers because a few make poor decisions. But there is no good reason why teens younger than 18 need to drive.

Most live close enough to walk or bike to school, or their parents drive them, or they can take a bus. If they need a ride home from work or a party, again, call home. Call a cab.

The risk of giving teens a licence to drive is too great, the consequences too often tragic.

Most parents, retired teachers and administrators requested anonymity, because their kids and grandkids still have to go to school, or they have relatives or fair-weather friends in the B.C. Teachers’ Federation who mustn’t be enraged by any contradiction of their dogma.

There was the Grade 3 art class in Langley where students were assigned to create anti-Bill 22 protest signs. There was the Grade 6 teacher in Greater Victoria who started a one-hour drill on BCTF talking points by telling students not to believe anything they see in the media. There was the middle school in the Gulf Islands that dismissed students early in a show of solidarity against the latest of many legislated settlements.

And there were the BCTF-BCGEU pickets that blocked entrances to government offices here in Victoria, harassing, threatening and physically blocking office workers in an effort to force them to join the thousands bused in for the traditional howling show of strength for Big State Labour bosses on the legislature lawn.

In my 20 years of criticizing the policies and tactics of teacher union radicals, I have had my office windows smashed twice. I have seen a mob of self-absorbed strikers push a senior off the sidewalk into the snow. My daughter has been subjected to hard-left environmental propaganda in elementary school. I’ve never seen anything quite like this.

But hey, let’s be constructive here.

First, I should emphasize I understand that these incidents do not represent the vast majority of dedicated teachers, who wouldn’t think of intentionally abusing their position for personal or political gain. I mean that sincerely.

And thanks to all the teachers who sent me lecturing letters, particularly those who insist that they don’t really want another 15 per cent raise, because their first priority is improving classroom resources.

Volume doesn’t permit individual responses to everyone. Authors who begin along the lines of “Sir, you are an idiot” receive lower priority. If I don’t get back to you, please convey your willingness to accept a brief wage freeze to your union executive. They’ve scaled back some of

And yes, I’m aware that the Harvard study of class size and performance I mentioned last week examined charter schools in the United States. I understand that “charter school” is considered coarse language in B.C. As with health care, there must be no serious competitive

dynamic or other dangerous experimentation permitted within the unionized state monopoly model.

And thanks for suggesting I’m an agent of the B.C. Liberals, who invented poverty 11 years ago.

East Van MLA Jenny Kwan touched on it in the debate on Bill 22. Children coming to inner city schools hungry, inadequately clothed, with lice. Abused children.

I can assure Kwan that these tragic realities are not confined to the hellish B.C. Liberal era of spending increases.

Indeed, I witnessed all these things in my three-room school in Tomslake, B.C. in the 1960s. Social Credit was to blame then.

I remember the school more for its great teachers than its undrinkable water or alcoholic principal.

And to all those who provide spellingchallenged advice on journalistic objectivity, here’s the thing. The first rule of opinion writing is to have one. “Confused,” as you say, is one word to describe your most recent comments in The News regarding AESC. “Nonsense” might be another good word. It is clear to me you have absolutely no business acumen.

To suggest that more shows would not improve the financial situation at the AESC because they would increase operating costs is absurd.

Your comments regarding the parking being inadequate are myth.

The BCTF is demanding a 15 per cent wage hike and other benefits that would cost $2 billion and raise taxes for BC families. Virtually all other public sector unions have settled for no wage increases.

It’s unacceptable that schools are disrupted and that students and their families are inconvenienced over an unreasonable salary demand in difficult economic times. The union is making claims and demands that simply don’t add up.

The union wants more paid time outside the classroom – sick leave for teachers on call, expanded bereavement and discretionary leave.

The government wants more time for teacher training and to ensure that Pro-D days really are for professional development.

The union says all teaching positions should be selected on the basis of seniority.

The government supports seniority but qualifications must also count so that math teachers teach math, and science teachers teach science.

The union says that teachers who perform poorly in evaluations will be dismissed – ‘one strike and you’re out’.

The government wants to support teacher improvement through a standardized evaluation process.

The union says that government refuses to negotiate.

There has been over a year of negotiations and 78 full bargaining sessions.

The union says that class size limits have been eliminated.

Class size limits will remain in place on all grades across BC.

The union says that BC has 700 fewer special needs teachers.

2100 new teaching assistants have been hired since 2001. And, with a new $165 million Learning Improvement Fund, we will hire more.

Parents warned of non-sanctioned trips The Abbotsford school district is again warning parents of high school kids to be wary of non-sanctioned excursions being marketed to students.

Dave Stephen, the district’s manager of communications, said that every year around this time, businesses promote trips that take place during holiday times and weekends.

He said the trips are advertised as being “overseen (by company personnel) that includes Canadian high school teachers,” but Abbotsford school district staff are not officially part of these vacations.

The concern is the safety of the participating teens and whether they are properly monitored on

the trip.

Stephen said another concern is the marketing approach which centres on recruiting a few Grade 11 and 12 students at each school to organize and sign up other students.

“We have reports that some Grade 11 students are being recruited at our schools to be coordinators for next year already,” said superintendent Kevin Godden.

He said materials now being distributed indicate the company’s staff will be holding meetings with students. Godden said these meetings are not approved through any Abbotsford schools.

The school district first expressed concerns about these excursions in 2010, when a group of students, including sev-

eral from Abbotsford, travelled to the Dominican Republic over spring break.

Mitchell honoured by Sport BC Hockey teams off to provincials

Jim Mitchell won the official of the year award at the 46th annual Sport BC Awards gala at Richmond’s River Rock Show Theatre last week.

Mitchell, a teacher at W.J. Mouat Secondary and an Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame inductee in 2004,

has been a wrestling referee for 36 years, officiating Olympics, World Cups, Commonwealth Games, Pan Am Games and more.

He edged Terry Mosdell (lacrosse, Surrey) and Wayne Van Osterhout (rowing, Victoria) for the Sport BC award.

Three other Abbotsford natives were nominated, but basketball player Jacob Doerksen (university athlete), wrestler Sunny Dhinsa (high school athlete) and volleyballer Will Quiring (college athlete) were runners-up in their respective categories.

Two Abbotsford midget rep teams have earned berths to the BC Hockey provincial championships to be held March 18-24.

Both teams qualified by virtue of finishing among the top teams at their respective Pacific Coast Final Four playoffs earlier this month.

The midget A1 team, coached by Les Coughlan, will battle five other teams

in the Tier 1 tournament in Kelowna.

The midget A3 team, coached by Ron Mayert, finished the regular season at the top of PCAHA midget flight 5, winning the coveted league banner which will be hoisted to the rafters at MSA Arena at the end of the season. They travel to Osoyoos, completing with 10 other teams from B.C. and the Yukon in the Tier 3 championships.

For the Yale Lions, simply competing at the storied B.C. AAA high school boys basketball championship was a memory to be treasured.

The end result wasn’t what they’d dreamed of, though.

The Lions led by 11 points midway through the second quarter in their opening-round game against Point Grey of Vancouver on Tuesday at the Langley Events Centre.

But the Greyhounds rallied in the second half, winning 77-69.

“We didn’t make it here last year, so it was quite an honour to play,” said Lions senior guard Trevor Berge, who scored nine points in the loss.

“Our whole team loved it. It just sucks that we didn’t win.”

The Lions simply couldn’t find a defensive answer for the multifaceted scoring skills

of the Greyhounds’ Andrew Mavety. The senior forward racked up a game-high 34 points, and opened things up for teammate Kyril Fourik to knock down five threepointers en route to 24 points of his own.

Ball security also hurt the Lions – they turned the ball over 17 times, compared to just nine for the Greyhounds.

Two of Yale’s underclassmen served notice that the Lions will be a team to be reckoned with in the future. Grade 11 swingman J.J. Pankratz counted a trio of threepointers among his teamhigh 28 points, while Grade 9 guard Jacquin Bennett-Boire stuffed the box score with 23 points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Canadian Seniors Curling Championships begin this week A star-studded field is set to hit the ice at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre this week, as the Canadian Seniors Curling Championship arrives in town.

Organizers are thrilled with the number of highprofile skips who are emerging from the provincial playdowns.

“We’re gratified, because the quality of skips is indicative of a great championship,” said Soren Jensen, chair of the organizing committee. “Particularly on the women’s side, we’ve got great respresentatives.”

The championships run March 17-25 at ARC, and headlining the women’s draw is Colleen Jones, one of the greatest female curlers of all time. The Nova Scotian is a six-time Scotties Tournament of Hearts winner, including an unprecedented four national titles in a row between 2001 and 2004, and is a two-time World Champion (2001 and 2004).

Colleen Jones is among the high-profile skips in the field at the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships. is another former Scotties champ – she won the Canadian women’s title in 1998, and went on to win bronze at the Worlds.

Also in the field is defending Canadian senior champ Heidi Hanlon, an 11time Scotties participant from New Brunswick.

On the men’s side, Quebec’s Pierre Charette is the highest-profile skip.

He’s a two-time Brier runner-up, playing third for Guy Hemmings in 1998 and 1999.

Ray Zahab, participant & ultra marathon champion

New run for water ultra marathon

To run 55 kilometres is no easy feat, nor is it easy on your feet!

“I’m trying to train my legs to run even when they are tired,” ambulance paramedic Mel Dick shares. He has run two long training runs on consecutive days this week, 24K followed by 21K. He and 19 other runners have taken the Run for Water Ultra Marathon 55 Kilometre challenge to be held on May 26, a day before the other Run for Water events at Mill Lake.

They will join Ultra Marathon Champion Ray Zahab who is no stranger to making the impossible possible. “The only limits you have are those you put on yourself,” he shares when he talks with thousands of youth and executives through his organization Impossible2possible.

Zahab has taken students on running expeditions across Baffin Island, part of Siberia, through Tunisia, and has just passed the 100 kilometre mark as he leads students in a run across South American continent from Concon,

Chile to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Through creating experiential learning opportunities these students have learned how strong they are physically and emotionally as well as the importance of a team. By setting goals of running across vast areas, students have also gained a unique appreciation for the environment and culture experienced on the route.

It is in this spirit the Run for Water created a 55 kilometre route for Zahab and 20 adult runners to take on in one day. The route is through rural Abbotsford finishing at the Eco Dairy on Sumas Road during package pick up for the other races. The route follows the Discovery Trail.

“We wanted to give runners a new challenge,” founding board member of the Run for Water Ken Baerg explains. “It is not easy for the young girls who walks for water every day in Ethiopia. While this ultra run is in no way comparable to their plight, it is a way to dedicate a challenge to them, and to think about their life in Ethiopia while running through parts

of Abbotsford the runners may have never experienced before.”

Stay-at-home mom Jen Hockney Kask is one of the runners. “I love to run. I like the sound of my feet hitting the ground, the crisp air in the fall. Run for Water provides an outlet for my running while helping those in Africa. I am excited for this new race route and the new challenge, but most of all, for bringing clean water to the people of Ethiopia. I am hoping to raise enough money to bring 100 people clean drinking water ($3500).”

The runners are each trying to raise $1500 for the clean water systems in Ethiopia, which is the cause Run for Water has raised over $500,000 in the last five years. Hope International has a goal of providing clean water to much of the Bonke region of Ethiopia, where the average time for women and girls to collect water is 3-5 hours every day.

utrition information has never been more accessible than right now but not all the information is credible; myths and misinformation abound. Nutrition Month 2012 is dedicated to busting up popular food and nutrition myths by bringing truths to Canadians from dietitians, the food and nutrition experts.

ealthy eating is a vital part of normal growth and development for children. In Canada, rates of obesity among children and youth ages 2 to 17 are on the rise. In 1979, 3% of children and youth were obese. By 2004, 8% were obese.

An additional 18% of Canadian children and youth are overweight.

No single factor can reverse the obesity trend – social, environmental economic, cultural and biological factors all play a role. Dietitians work in many settings with families, communities and other professionals to help children:

Enjoy healthy eating as a normal part of childhood

Attain nutrient and energy needs to support healthy growth and development

Develop, a positive body image, and high self esteem

Support the development of healthy food behaviours, including cooking and shopping skills

omeone asked me if I knew of a green wine for St. Patrick’s Day. I know the Irish hero’s day is imminent, but green wine? Um. m.

I don’t think so. You see, green is an adjective suggesting a not-veryerydesirable quality in wine.

Unless you’re talking about Vinho Verde, the low-alcohol Portuguese sipper with a light sparkle called pétillance. In that case, green is good because it’s referring to the wine’s youth, not the flavour and “mouthfeel” produced by under-ripe grapes.

Instead of green, I prefer to think pink and open a nice rosé wine—not for St. Patrick’s Day, but for Easter dinner.

Sure, you could have green wine and ham for Easter dinner, but Vinho Verde is probably better with a ham-and-vegetable salad tossed in a vinaigrette or cold fish, olives and crackers while you’re sitting on a sunny patio.

A well-chosen rosé wine will not get beat up by your Easter dinner; instead, the wine’s juiciness is a foil to the richness of dinner while the fruit and refreshing qualities complement the myriad flavours of the table and prepare your palate for that next delicious bite.

Two B.C. rosé wines I love: 2010 Bartier-Scholefield (BS) Rosé Table Wine ($19/13.4% ABV) is sturdy and chock-full of cheerful cherries, followed by a rhubarb bang and hint of earth.

2010 Haywire Gamay Noir Rosé ($21/13.7% ABV) has cherries, tart cranberries, citrus and a suggestion of (am I crazy?) dark chocolate working together to make me smile.

UFV’s Absolute Style offers backstage view of fashion industry

R

esearching trends, preparing a collection, and styling models are all a part of UFV’s annual runway show, Absolute Style.

The one-day event highlights the work of the Fashion Design program and its grad students, while providing them with real-world fashion industry experience.

Absolute Style 2012 is taking place on Wednesday, April 25 with two shows at UFV Abbotsford’s Envision Athletic Centre, 1385 McKenzie Rd. The runway will feature an array of garments, including swim suits, tailored jackets, dresses and costume wear.

“The show is very exciting for students as it’s a culmination of what they’ve learned throughout the two- year program,” said Deanna Devitt, head of UFV’s Fashion Design program.

Since January, students have been working on their collections for the show. They started off by researching the market and looking at trends, fabrics and colours.

After determining their target

customer and presenting their concepts to a panel of instructors and industry professionals, students were able to start development.

“Every year the collections are unique and really showcase a variety of markets,” said Devitt “We have evening wear, to casual, to costume wear.

Students really try to target a niche market that they are interested in.”

The timeline that students are given to create their line closely mirrors that of the fashion industry. Working backstage at the Absolute Style show will add another element to their knowledge, as they will have to choose the hair and makeup for their models, along with their catwalk music.

“They really get to see how fashion works,” said Devitt. “They have to do it all — everything they would do in the fashion industry, including the decisions you have to make.”

The show often draws industry professionals, visitors from around B.C., community members, and high school students, making it a great way to

The afternoon Absolute Style show is at 2:30 p.m., with doors opening at 2 p.m. The evening show is at 7 p.m., with a wine and cheese event at 6:30 p.m.

Through the afternoon, from 1-5 p.m., there will be an open house to showcase the Fashion Design program and its

projects.

2012 Total Makeover Contest under way with great results

hape Your World Society Total Makeover Contest, sponsored by Go Fusion Fitness, presented by the Abbotsford News, is currently hosting its 4th annual Total Makeover Contest.

A panel of judges, consisting of participating sponsors, spent long hours reviewing the many applications sent in by local Fraser Valley women.

Applications included recent photos of the applicants and a reason on why they were in need of a “Total Makeover”.

After many hours of deliberation the TOP 20 were selected.

The 20 Total Makeover Contestants are now into their 6th week of transformations. Together they have already lost an amazing 172.4 lbs and 159.75 inches. They recently participated in a life altering iChange Seminar and every week they are learning new information about health & fitness topics to give them the knowledge and tools to be successful and enjoy this exciting journey. They are now getting excited to have their hair and makeup done by Fusion Hair Design, Mauve Hair

Design, Makeup Infusion & Aloette Cosmetics, in preparation for their professional photo shoot sessions at Revival Arts Studio. The first round of public online voting is from March 29 - April 3. The top 20 are learning and practicing their modeling skills for their upcoming Fashion Show in April. Add a touch of spring to your home

he arrival of spring has long been celebrated by people of every faith and from every corner of the globe as a time to say farewell to the cold and gray of winter and to welcome the return of warmth and color and the beginnings of new life.

While spring is breathing new life into the outdoors, it’s also a perfect time to add a little seasonal oomph to your indoor environment. Here is an assortment of tips for brightening your home in celebration of spring.

Economical tip for remodelling a room

W

ith money tight and household expenses rising, there’s a natural tendency to put your remodeling plans on hold. But even if your budget is limited, there’s one home remodeling project that is still affordable, and fun, too: interior painting.

According to the Paint Quality Institute, the do-it-yourself cost of repainting a room is typically well runder $100, about the same as taking a family of four to the movies. Unlike a night at the movies, however, the enjoyment of a freshly painted room will last for years.

Start by visiting your local paint retailer, asking to see the color display.

The fun begins by looking through the color cards and envisioning what your room will look like with an entirely new color scheme.

If you’re the decisive type, you might quickly spot the perfect color for the room you’re repainting. For everyone else, it’s usually best to take a few color cards home to view in the space you want to paint. Once there, you should follow a few time-tested rules.

First, when evaluating color options, conceal all the colors on the card except for the one you are considering. By isolating the color, you’ll get a better idea of how the room will look in a particular hue.

Second, evaluate the color both in daylight and at night when all the light is artificial. You may be surprised how different a color can look when lighting conditions change.

Third, consider when you most often use the room. If you are painting a breakfast area, be sure you like the way the color looks in morning light; but if you’re painting a bedroom, it’s more important that the color be pleasing under artificial light.

Fourth, be aware that color tends to be more intense on a large area than a small one. A color that looks just right on a color card may be too dark or too bold when applied to your walls. For safety’s sake, move down one degree of intensity on the card and choose a slightly lighter tint or shade.

Fun work environment is travel agent’s DESTINATION OF CHOICE

or 15 years, Janice Lonnqvist toiled away in a bank.

However, it wasn’t her type of work environment.

When a mother at her child’s school asked if she was interested in checking out a local travel agency that offered training, it was an easy decision to take a chance and leave the banking world.

“I went with another friend of mine who was more interested (in working at an agency),” she says. “I ended up showing up and she didn’t, and I became a travel agent. It was just totally a fluke.”

That fluke has now lasted 11 years.

Lonnqvist says her customers make it easy to be passionate about her career. “Everybody’s always so happy planning their trips or planning their honeymoon. That, to me, is such a fun thing,” she explains. “Everybody’s so excited, not like when I was in the banking industry.”

After five years at that first travel agency, she realized the atmosphere wasn’t the best. But Lonnqvist absolutely loved what she was doing.

“My husband just said, ‘Why don’t you start your own travel agency?’ “ she recalls. That’s when Ocean Breeze Cruise & Travel came into fruition. Six years later Lonnqvist works from her home office and employs 22 other agents.

“I never ever would have dreamed that I would have done anything like this before,” she says. “I mean, it’s the most fun job I ever had.”

There’s no such thing as a routine. As she fields inquiries via email, phone and personal appointments, her day can change drastically if someone sends her on the hunt for an exotic travel package.

This is especially true now that more people are leaning towards adventure tourism instead of a typical beach resort. This means more emphasis on destinations that offer the opportunity to go hiking, ride zip-lines or even go on an African safari.

Although she’s having the best work experience of her life, there are still frustrations that come with the job. Potential customers will call her up, get all the information they need and then purchase a package on their own.

“People have such a misconception that they can get it cheaper online, but most cases we can either match or even sometimes do better than going online,” she says, adding there’s extra value from the recommendations and streamlined services she offers.

Furthermore, Lonnqvist says the average person doesn’t have access to the same resources as a travel agent. Dedicated websites, access to wholesalers and suppliers, and an extensive list of contacts means a travel agent can secure deals that simply aren’t available to most people.

Lonnqvist admits she’s not immune to the temptation to scoop up some of the great deals she comes across.

He will be sadly missed by his 5 children, Marianne (Bill), Danny (Angel) Ronnie (Karen), Linda (Randy) and Ed (Sharon); as well as all of his beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren; his sister, Marilu (Pete) and brother, Dan (Sydney); his nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Ron was predeceased by his beloved wife of 39 years, Lillian; his parents Robert and Mary and his brothers, Bob and Larry.

Mary is survived by her sister in Holland; her children, Peter (Mary), Alida, Keith (Pat), Terri (Don), Reina (Bill), Gerry (Jill) and Anne (Bill); 14 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.

Mary was predeceased by her husband Reindert in 1991.

She was a great Mom and we will all miss her very much.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Michael Schmur while vacationing in Nevada.

Michael is lovingly remembered by brother Walter (Margaret); daughter Louise(Paul); sons Paul(Lu) and Tim(Sherri); six grand children and by many friends.

Born in Orechow, Ukraine to Nikkolai and Luise Schmur, Michael emigrated to Canada in 1949 at the age of 7. After spending his youth in BC, he moved to Alberta, eventually settling in Slave Lake.

Services were held March 7th in Slave Lake. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alberta Diabetes Foundation as expression of sympathy.

Walter Janzen passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. He was born in Waldheim, Saskatchewan, Sept.

28, 1919. He was 92 years old. Dad was a good, honest and decent man. He was a hard worker and had a passion for driving trucks. He also loved to golf and play pool.

Dad came from a large family.

His own family included 7 children and two adopted children. Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death was sudden but gentle with no pain. His memory will always linger in our hearts.
