WHAT’S NEW AT ST. JOHN AMBULANCE? by Suzanne Anderson

St. John Ambulance is 900 years old. No one stays around that long without being able to adapt to the changing world. From the time of the Crusades to landing on the shores of Canada 125 years ago, St. John Ambulance has stayed around because we keep up with the needs of the communities we serve. In keeping with modern needs, our National Council is always looking at ways to make First Aid easier for people to learn. With that in mind there have been some changes to St. John Ambulance in the past 3 years. Daycare and Preschool Workers We have restructured our Standard First Aid program and we are now able to offer Emergency Child Care First Aid once a month to licensed Daycare and Preschool workers. The ECC is on Day 1 of the SFA and these students are ﬁnished at the end of the day, taking home a certiﬁcate valid for 3 years.

Homecare For the Layperson With government budget cutbacks, care of a love one is often the responsibility of the family. Are you prepared? What do you do when the professional caregiver goes home? The Family Home Care Course is designed for family caregivers who want to learn how to look after someone who is ill at home. It covers safety, personal assistance and challenging behaviours. Our instructors are experienced in this ﬁeld.

Kid’s First Aid Camps Looking for something for your 11 and ups to do during Spring Break and Summer Holidays? We offer a 2 day Kid’s First Aid Camp. On Day 1 the kids take the certified Babysitters Course where they learn how to care for babies and young children, keep everyone safe, and provide first aid if necessary. On Day 2 they take the Junior Emergency First Aid Course that covers first aid training more in depth. We give a package deal for the Camp and provide both a morning and afternoon snack.

AED Training In April 2008, St. John Ambulance decided to ramp up some of our courses by including Automated External Defibrillation training. It is now offered with all courses that include CPR Level C. That means that students learn how to use a Defibrillator and shock the casualty’s heart, a technique that has proven to save more lives than just CPR. Courses that include AED training are the Standard First Aid, CPR Level C, and CPR Level C Recertification. The latter course has replaced all stand alone AED training and allows those with CPR Level C to be able to have AED training when they recertify.

OFA Level 3 Recert If you have held your OFA Level 3 several times and have a time Page 4

crunch, consider taking the 1 week OFA Level 3 recertiﬁcation course. It is fast paced and covers all you need to know to recertify your certiﬁcate for another 2 years. We offer this course in the summer and early fall.

More Online Courses Just think how nice it would be to take a training course at home when you have the time. We offer Online Courses to accommodate the busy person. We have WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Fire Safety, Lock-Out Tag-Out, Medical Terminology and Workplace Harassment Sensitivity Training. The price is reasonable and students can log in and out, so there is no requirement to complete the course all at once.

PLEASURE CRAFT OPERATORS CARD In September, all boaters born after April 1, 1983 and/or who operate a motorboat less than 4 meters in length, must have a Pleasure Craft Operators Card. The ﬁne for not having the card will be $250. St. John Ambulance has made it easy to obtain your card – you read the material online and then book a time at the Branch to write the exam. The cost is only $25.00.

Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) Q & A’s By now there probably isn’t a home owner in Canada that hasn’t heard of the Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC). The HRTC was created in an effort to stimulate the economy and create new jobs in the house and home sector. This 15% credit is on renovation expenses ranging between $1,000 and $10,000 per household. What exactly does the tax credit cover? To remove the guesswork, we’ve listed some of the most common home renovations and home improvements below. The Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) covers: • painting (inside or outside) • renovations of kitchen, bathroom, basement • building a fence or deck • new carpets or hardwood floors • new furnaces The Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) does NOT cover: • purchase of furniture • purchase of appliances • purchase of electronics • construction equipment • costs of maintenance and routine repairs The federal government predicts that around 4.6 million households will take advantage of this tax credit. This program is available as of January 27th 2009, but is only valid through January 31st 2010. Some common home renovation projects for 2009 which would qualify for the HRTC: Windows & Doors Energy efficiency is the theme in 2009; as we all know, conserving energy is a good way to save money and help the envi-

ronment. Installing new windows and doors will help insulate your home properly, thus reducing energy wastes and costs. Kitchen Renovations Renovating your kitchen is one the best ways to increase the value of your home. The kitchen is a focal point in most homes, and making simple renovations such as installing custom cabinets, or opting for granite or marble countertops, can create a whole new feel and ambience immediately. Heating & Cooling Is your home heated with gas? Electricity? Do you have central air conditioning or multiple air conditioning units? Taking advantage of the HRTC can offset the additional expense for more energy efficient heating and cooling solutions. Bathroom Remodelling Your bathroom may be in need for an upgrade. Consider remodelling it by adding a new bathtub, sink, toilet or countertop. You may also want to go the extra mile by adding heated floors or redoing your bathroom tiles. Going Green Green technology is the buzz out there with more and more companies offering green-related products and services. In addition to saving energy, you can go green by using eco-friendly products. When buying supplies for your home renovation project, consider non-toxic and natural paints, floor treatments and renovation materials.

What is the Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC)? The proposed HRTC is a non-refundable tax credit for work performed or goods acquired in respect of an eligible dwelling. What is meant by eligible dwelling? An eligible dwelling is a housing unit that is eligible to be an individual’s principal residence or that of one or more of their family members, at any time between January 27, 2009 and February 1, 2010. In general, a housing unit is considered eligible to be an individual’s principal residence where it is owned by the individual and ordinarily inhabited by the individual, the individual’s spouse or common-law partner, or their children. This means that any dwelling that you own and use personally could qualify, including your home or your cottage. What is the eligibility period? The credit will be based on eligible expenditures for work performed or goods acquired after January 27, 2009, and before February 1, 2010. Expenditures incurred pursuant to an agreement that was entered into before January 28, 2009, will not be eligible for the credit. Who will be eligible for the credit? Eligibility for the HRTC will be family based. A family will generally be considered to consist of an individual or an individual and his or her spouse or common-law partner, including children who will be under 18 years of age, at the end of 2009. A family will be allowed a single credit that may be shared within the family. If two or more families share the ownership of an eligible dwelling, each family will be eligible for their own separate credit (i.e. each up to $1,350) that will be calculated on their respective eligible expenditures. How will the credit be calculated? The credit will only be available for the 2009 tax year and applies to eligible expenditures of more than $1,000, but not more than $10,000, resulting in a maximum credit of $1,350 ($9,000 x 15%). What are eligible expenditures? To be eligible, expenditures incurred in relation to a renovation or alteration to an eligible dwelling (or the land that forms part of the eligible dwelling) must be of an enduring nature and integral to the dwelling, and includes the cost of labour and professional services, building materials, fixtures, rentals, and permits. Eligible expenditures must be supported by acceptable documentation. What does the CRA consider to be acceptable documentation? Documentation, such as agreements, invoices, and receipts, must clearly identify the type and quantity of goods purchased or services provided, including, but not limited to, the following information: * information that clearly identifies the vendor/contractor, their business address and, if applicable, the GST/HST registration number; * a description of the goods and the date when the goods were purchased; * The date when the goods were delivered (keep your delivery slip as proof) and/or when the work or services were performed; * A description of the work performed including the address where the work was performed; * the amount of the invoice; and * proof of payment. Receipts or invoices must indicate paid in full or be accompanied by other proof of payment, such as a credit card slip or cancelled cheque. TAZ Excavating takes a waste-not, want-not approach to business. Trees, rock and soil: if it can be reused, it will be. “Why truck it away, just to buy it back later?” says TAZ supervisor Jon Coleman on-site at the new Maple Woods development. “Why not reuse what’s here? It’s earthfriendly.” For example, Coleman says most of the trees taken down on the ﬁve-acre property have gone back into the 35-home development. “We milled, the trees for the cedar fence that goes around the prop-

erty, and we milled all the beam entrance ways for the front and back doorways,” he says. “Then we stockpiled all the soil on the property and had it screened so Page 22

we could reuse it for the topsoil in the yards.” Even the rock on the site is being reused to create stunning stone work. “We try to think of everything we can do,” says Coleman. “If it can be reused , let’s reuse it.” This excavating company does everything from foundations to land clearing, milling to irrigation and stone work, and tries to take an environmental approach to everything it does. “There’s a pond just off to the right here,” Coleman points out,

“that’s used to control water run off. “For a portion of our irrigation system, we are using the most water-efﬁcient sub-surface irrigation that waters from the roots upward, using much less water than conventional irrigation systems.” TAZ Excavating, under the leadership of owner Darren Daly, is based in Duncan and has operated for the past four years. You Get What You Pay For In these tough economic times we all seem to be closely watching how we spend our money. An important consideration when it comes to new installations or renovations of existing plumbing fixtures in our homes is that we need to be careful not to substitute good quality for the many substandard products that are constantly advertised. How can you tell the difference? The best way to protect your investment in your home is to have a good plan and give yourself time to do the research on the products you are interested in. The marketplace is very large and you will find what appear to be similar products made by the same manufacturer in different stores and the price for what appears to be the same product could differ by as much as two or three hundred dollars on a large item such as a tub or shower to smaller price differences on items such as faucets. If you find a tub or shower with a large price difference but one that may be made by the same manufacturer, there is usually a difference in quality, such as half the thickness of acrylic or fewer coats of gelcoat. You do not want to accidentally drop a shampoo bottle, which happened to one of our customers, and have it make a hole in the bottom of your shower. These are items that are expensive to replace so spending those extra dollars the first time can definitely save money in the long term. The choice in faucets is never ending. How can you figure out what you are paying the extra dollars for? Check the weight of the faucet, quality faucets have lots of brass, the lower priced faucets have lots of plastic. Is the finish guaranteed for life? Is it a name brand faucet that you will be able to get parts for years down the road when it might start dripping? How long has the faucet been manufactured and what is the installation track record for it? Replacing a basin faucet is not so difficult, but if your tub or shower faucet fails, it usually means cutting holes in the wall to replace the valve that is behind the finished wall. This can add up to a very expensive repair versus perhaps a no charge cartridge replacement from your quality brand name guaranteed faucet. Your kitchen faucet is likely the most used faucet in your home and good quality ensures reliability in your kitchen, a must for today’s busy working families. Kitchen sinks also come in many materials and styles. The same research applies to check what material the sink is made from and is it durable enough to give you years of maintenance free use. Shopping at a specialty plumbing store can have many advantages especially a store where you can buy quality products, arrange for installation by a plumber or talk to the experienced and informative staff for do-it-yourself information. This is the same store that will handle any warranty problems, keep stock of replacement parts that may be needed in future years and have the resources to look after all your needs. 2009 is a great year to go ahead with that plumbing renovation you have been thinking about as it will qualify for the 15% home renovation tax credit of HOME PLUMBING CENTRE up to $1350.
