buyers that customers will quickly learn parking will be available, despite the lack of a road-facing lot. But whether consumers will adjust their habits as more developments like The Mark are built is “a million-dollar question,” Meindertsma said. ■■■■ City officials, though, think people can change. Today, Abbotsford residents are used to getting in their cars and commuting from place to place. That mindset won’t shift overnight, particularly since the current layout of Abbotsford encourages such behaviour. “There has always been this notion that more parking is better but we’re starting to realize now that more parking can be just as harmful as too little parking,” said Mark Neill, the city’s director of community planning. Much of the space currently dedicated to parking sits vacant for the bulk of the year and is used only in December. The rest of the year, the parking mainly functions as a deterrant to walking, and as a sign to commuters that there is space available. (In any discussion about parking in Abbotsford, the historic downtown core – a

two levels of parking for the two six-storey buildings, says it can cost between $35,000 and $50,000 per underground parking spot. Those costs end up being factored into the pricing of the new homes. Still, people want to be able to park, and apartment-dwellers have become accustomed to storing their vehicle underground. While zoning rules would have allowed the Mill District to supply 1.5 spots for every unit being constructed, Heinrichs is building 1.9 spaces per unit to keep up with demand. “The market demands the parking, not so much the city,” he said. In Vancouver, some buildings don’t have any available parking; residents don’t need it, and the city doesn’t require it. But Abbotsford is still far from that point, according to both Heinrichs and Meindertsma. Changing habits isn’t easy, and it’s unclear whether it will be consumers driving the change, or the city with its rules. “What comes first, the chicken or the egg?” Meindertsma asked. “What comes first, the change in consumer behaviour or the change in the landscape?”

A Surrey man charged in relation to a series of home break-ins in the Townline Hill area of Abbotsford in 2015 has been sentenced to five months in prison after pleading guilty to two of them. The jail term for Shane Conrad Takakenew, 47, will be followed by one year of probation. Takakenew was sentenced Oct. 10 in Abbotsford provincial court on two charges of break-and-enter. Another two break-and-enter charges were stayed.

Takakenew and co-accused Dustin Littlewolfe, 32, of Vancouver were arrested in late September 2015 after a series of break-ins had taken place at homes in west Abbotsford. The thefts began in November 2014 and, by the time the pair were arrested, police had recorded almost 40 break-ins in the area. The total value of the stolen property – mainly cash, jewelry and electronics – amounted to $750,000. The largest theft involved $50,000 in foreign currency, jewelry and electronics taken from one home. x x x x x x

At the time, police said the break-ins occurred mainly between 3 and 7 p.m and involved the culprits getting into homes by prying open locked windows. Police believed the suspects were watching the residences to determine when they would be vacant. Investigators were able to link Littlewolfe to one breakin, which occurred Sept. 24, 2015. He pleaded guilty to that incident – as well as to one each in Surrey and Delta in 2012 – in June 2016 and was sentenced to almost five months

in prison followed by two years of probation. Takakenew was charged with four break-and-enters in Abbotsford, taking place on April 29, Aug. 8, Aug. 14 and Sept. 24 of 2015. Takakenew also has several other charges currently before the courts, including seven counts of possession of stolen property and four counts of using an identity document without lawful excuse from December 2016 and January 2017 in Surrey. The trial on those charges is slated to begin Feb. 5 in Surrey provincial court.

Densely vegetated and uninhabited â€“ by humans, at least â€“ Matsqui Island is believed to be one of the largest breeding grounds for mosquitoes in the Fraser Valley Regional District. Now, the company tasked with keeping the valleyâ€™s mosquito population in check is looking for permission and funding to map the island and target its plentiful pests. Every year, the Fraser River freshet inundates much of the island, turning it into a paradise for breeding mosquitoes. But the areaâ€™s dense foliage and lack of safe access has previously made the 360-hectare island â€“ which is part of the Matsqui First Nation â€“ mostly impenetrable by workers for Morrow BioScience, the private company with the FVRDâ€™s mosquito control contract. Now Morrow has proposed a program to map the island with â€œhigh-accuracy GPSâ€? in order to find the areas susceptible to flooding â€“ and thus

That information would then enable crews to conduct ground and aerial anti-larval treatments. The tree canopy on the island is so thick that without the mapping, mosquito control crews donâ€™t know where standing water is located. Reducing mosquito levels on the island would have a

significant positive impact on many residents in Mission, along with those in northern Abbotsford, FVRD staff say in a report. A map suggests mosquitoes bred on the island end up in much of Mission south of Best Avenue, along with a large chunk of Matsqui Village and rural northern Abbotsford stretching nearly to Downes Road.

The plan would require permission from the Matsqui First Nation. Morrow says the program would cost $11,000. The money would come from an existing mosquito control reserve account that predates the 1995 creation of the Fraser Valley Regional District. That account currently has $11,749.

One site is off of Adanac Avenue, near the horseshoe pits. The other is off of Ware Street, just to the east of Kariton Gallery.

Paper Trails They could all get good jobs elsewhere. That’s the thing I keep coming back to when I read of politicians willing to debase themselves at behest of their party leaders. In Canada and the United States, politicians regularly subject themselves to humiliation, either to curry the favour or avoid the wrath of more-senior politicians. Occasionally, they’ll even call their party leader their boss, even though the electorate is the one with the sole ability to terminate a political career. This, of course, is most frighteningly obvious in the United States, where Republican leaders have been publicly supporting their president while, behind the scenes, expressing worry that he’ll start a nuclear war. If you’re being generous, you

can excuse his cabinet for sticking around in order to prevent catastrophe. But there’s no such benefit of the doubt to be given to members of other branches of government who refrain from speaking out about the danger they believe their country to be in. The situation there renders somewhat quaint any concerns about groveling Canadian politicians. But it should expose the risks that unprincipled politics creates. Canadian political parties of all stripes show almost no willingness to let MLAs and MPs deviate from talking points. Sure, a backbencher will occasionally make news for expressing some fringier views on topics far outside the mainstream. But when it comes to serious issues of the day, politicians are expected to regurgitate party dogma. The exclamation mark is for your party’s ideas; the question mark for the other party’s. Mixing up the too is B-A-D. These are men and women who, by and large, have serious records of public service. They enter office genuinely wanting to improve the lives of constituents, I believe. And yet, a combination of our political

system and human nature ends up reducing them to automatons controlled by and for their party leaders. Imagine you’re a new MLA. You’ve joined a political party, won your election and are now sitting in the legislature.

The theft occurred Monday evening at the BC SPCA’s branch on Industrial Way. The thieves, who police believe used a Toyota pickup truck, took two lawn mowers, a weed eater, gas cans and a pro-

pane tank. “I am so relieved that all the animals are safe, but for this to happen on Thanksgiving weekend feels like an extra-low blow,” branch manager Sarah Ringer said in a statement. “They had to take the storage sheds apart to steal them and they made two trips to take everything.” Staff and volunteers need the stolen gear to maintain the branch’s grounds, she said. “Being a non-profit orga-

nization, we try to use every penny to help animals, so this hits us hard,” Ringer said. The SPCA is asking for donations of money or items (two storage sheds, a lawn mower, a weed eater, gas cans and a propane tank) to replace what was stolen. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the incident is under investigation and police are canvassing the area for video surveillance.

Abbotsford gardens get ‘4 Blooms’ rating The City of Abbotsford showed its true colours in full bloom this past spring, and has been awarded for it. The municipality has been awarded a “4 blooms” rating from British Columbia Communities in

Bloom (CIB). It also got special recognition for the International Friendship Garden and a Criteria Award for outstanding effort for the Canada 150 trophy. It was the first year Abbotsford entered competitively in CIB.

The city launched a “Get Your Bloom On” and “You’re Bloomin’ Wonderful” campaigns in the spring, getting residents and businesses to participate in local contests to prepare their gardens for the CIB judges’ visit.

CIB inspires communities to enhance and sustain the visual appeal of neighbourhoods, public spaces, parks and streetscapes through the imaginative use of regionally appropriate plants and landscaping, with attention to environmental

stewardship and to preserve heritage and cultural assets. “Achieving 4 Blooms is a significant accomplishment, and, on behalf of city council, I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone involved,” Mayor Henry Braun said.

The former head of Fraser Health has resigned amid a scandal involving personal spending following his move from British Columbia to New Zealand. After seven years in charge of Fraser Health, Dr. Nigel Murray left in 2014 to move back to New Zealand, where he took a new job as head of the Waikato District Health Board in Hamilton, 130 km south of Auckland. Murray’s new job paid him about $525,000 per year, but the New Zealand Herald reported last December that Murray had claimed more than $100,000 in travel expenses, including $36,000 to relocate from B.C. Of that money, the Herald reported $10,000 came because Murray left Fraser Health “earlier than expected.” An independent inquiry followed that revealed that Murray spent “more than the agreed $25,000 (NZD) allocated for relocation costs, and other unauthorized expenses involving potential financial breaches of the chief executive’s obligations.” Murray’s resignation was accompanied by a promise to repay “all outstanding amounts.” He has been on leave since mid-July. His resignation follows months of scrutiny into Murray’s spending in New

In August, New Zealand news outlets reported that the Waikato board had been warned by doctors not to hire Murray, citing a “legacy … of disgruntlement, unhappiness, frustration” when he was working at another New Zealand health district. The chair of the health district, though, said such concerns were acknowledged and checked with Canadian health officials.

While at Fraser Health, Murray spent around $140,000 CAD over an 18 month-span in 2008 and 2009, before later pledging to reduce travel costs. Murray was making $444,000 a year when he left Fraser Health; the current CEO, Michael Marchbank, made $390,089 last year. During Murray’s tenure, Fraser Health also came under fire for failing to meet its budget, which climbed by nearly 50 per cent, triggering a review initiated by the provincial government.

Bringing awareness to domestic violence Purple Light Nights campaign launched in Abby Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

This year’s Purple Light Nights campaign was launched in Abbotsford last Friday to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence. The launch was held outside of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association office on Montrose Avenue, with a goal of encouraging individuals, groups and businesses to hang purple lights throughout October. “Purple is the symbol of courage, survival and honour, and has come to symbolize the fight to end women abuse,” said Michele Giordano, chair of the Violence Against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) committee. She said the campaign is held annually to acknowledge the existence of domestic abuse, to

stand in solidarity with victims, and to raise the profile of community resources. Giordano said more than 50 Abbotsford businesses have hung purple lights in support of the campaign. As well, VAWIR has created a “travelling exhibit” of life-sized red wooden silhouettes, each representing a

person killed by a partner. Some of these were on display at the launch event. “Violence impacts everyone; it is not just a women’s problem. Rather, it is the whole community that experiences the devastating impact of domestic violence,” Giordano said. Also speaking at the event, Mayor Henry

Braun cited statistics indicating that 25 per cent of all violent crimes reported to police involve family violence, and 70 per cent of the victims are girls and women. “We’re here to say that domestic violence has no place in our community,” he said. Braun said domestic abuse remains one of the most under-reported crimes, although the focused work of the Abbotsford Police Department’s domestic violence unit has resulted in a high rate of such crimes being reported locally. However, he said shelter availability and affordable housing for individuals trying to escape an abusive relationship remains one of the biggest challenges. Abbotsford Police Insp. Tom Chesley agreed that housing is a challenge. “There are still so many victims of domestic violence that really feel they are just so stuck where they are, because there is no place for them to go,” he said. “Until that barrier gets crossed, I think we’ve got this continuing uphill battle, and it’s the community that’s going to help us solve that battle.” Also speaking at the event were Abbotsford South MLA Darryl Plecas, and Kathleen and Alexander Kasatkin, whose daughter Kim was killed in November 2016 in Peru. Her common-law partner has been charged with her murder, but has not yet gone to trial. Also at the event, hip hop artist Saint Soldier and singer Rozsa released a new song, called Dark Shades, which is about domestic violence. His great-uncle Harry Vold brought seven bulls to the first-ever National Finals Rodeo in Dallas back in 1959, and the Vold family has had a presence at that event, regarded as the sport’s biggest, ever since. Vold said years of genetics have made the process of developing bulls easier, but the potential of an animal becoming a top bull is based on a number of factors. â€œOverall athleticism is the biggest part, I guess â€“ like how they perform and kick,â€? he said. â€œBut attitude has a lot to do with it as well â€“ just having the intensity and the ability to perform day in and day out. We breed the best of the best and you always hope you can produce another good one. Other times, you can tell by how fast the bull spins, or how hard they kick when they extend their legs out.â€? He said some of the bigger-name bulls coming to Abbotsford include Sheep Creek and Blow Me Away. Sheep Creek has bucked at

the World Finals in Las Vegas and is one of the more well-known bulls on the tour. â€œHeâ€™s a grey bull that I think a lot of people have become fans of,â€? he said. â€œHeâ€™s performed at quite a few of the bigger shows in North American the last few years. Blow Me Away is just a large animal. Heâ€™s extremely big for a rodeo bull.â€? Many of Voldâ€™s bulls travel to not only PBR events, but events throughout North America. He has also named two bulls after the late Ty Pozzobon, who won last yearâ€™s event in Abbotsford. â€œWe name the animals based on their personality or how they look,â€? he said. â€œOr some of them are named after guys that have passed, to kind of keep their name in the business.â€? The series returns to Vancouver inside B.C. Place for the third straight year in March. The womenâ€™s team features Nakisa and Tausani Levale, who were both named to the team for the first time. The sisters, who are both graduates of Abbotsford Senior Secondary, had stellar high school and youth careers in Abbotsford. Nakisa recently starred on the University of Victoria Vikes and helped lead the Vikes to a Canada West championship. Tausani earned a gold medal at the B.C. Playoffs loom for UFV soccer With just two weeks remaining in the Canada West soccer regular season, it’s “put up or shut up” time for both the men’s and women’s UFV Cascades teams. The men kept their playoff hopes alive with a dramatic last-minute goal by rookie forward Darash Sandhu to help the team down the TWU Spartans in Abbotsford on Sunday. With the game tied at 1-1 and in injury time, Sandhu got a clean look at a vacated Spartans net and made no mistake about it to give UFV the 2-1 win. The victory was a nice bounce-back effort from the men’s team, who lost 4-0 to the Spartans in Langley on Friday. “It’s massive,” Cascades head coach Tom Lowndes said. “Based off how Friday went

and how poor I thought we were, fantastic response. I thought first half was probably the best half we’ve put together all year. We were strong in the tackle, defensively our shape was good, we caused problems going forward, and we looked really, really good.” Gurmaan Jhaj tallied the Cascades’ first goal in the 12th minute, which stood as the game’s only goal until the Spartans tied the game in the 58th. The men’s team record improved to four wins, six losses and two ties after the weekend. They next head to Prince George to battle the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday and Saturday. Roy passed away in his sleep September 29th, after an 8 month struggle with increasing dementia at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Veronica: his daughter Rochelle (Irvin); grandchildren: Julie, Mitchell (Shivonne) and Chelsea (Dakota): great grandchildren: Samantha, Katrina, Trinity and Blythe. He was the middle child of a sibling group of 11. All but his two younger brothers, Earl (Eleanor) and Albert (Joan) have predeceased him. Left behind are many nieces, nephews and cousins who reside all over Canada. Roy had a varied working career. He was a career soldier, mainly being transferred between Alberta and Manitoba. He started in the artillery and moved to being a paratrooper ending his 25 year stint as a Safety System Technician. Returning to civilian life working as a greens keeper, ice maker and maintenance engineer in Abbotsford's recreational arenas mainly MRC. He loved his family first and foremost needing little else. He enjoyed playing cards, curling, golfing - often playing even in snow. Roy had a great sense of humour enjoying the antics of others while he stayed in the background. You never knew what would tickle him. Roy was interned at Musslewhite Cemetery following a small intimate service, October 11th, 2017. The family would especially like to thank the staff at Menno Hospital 2 West for their kindness and care they took with Roy. They enjoyed his humour while it was still there and were always respectful and caring when talking with him. We would also like to thank the Pastor of Menno and his volunteers for stopping in and spending time with Roy especially during his end of days. Kathleen Anne "Kathy" Currell February 4, 1950 - September 30, 2017 Kathy passed away suddenly in her home the night of September 30th. While her passing was unexpected, she had been living with congestive heart failure for some time. We had her longer than we expected to, but it still feels far too soon to be letting her go. Kathy was a fighter. She survived a battle with breast cancer in 2000, the complications of which led to another very close call in 2007. She also transcended an incredibly difficult childhood to become an unbelievably loving mother, and a treasured friend to anyone that knew her. Kathy was hilariously quick-witted, wildly intelligent, athletic, strikingly beautiful, and above all: genuine. The quote she chose for her 1967 yearbook was "Everybody's friend, nobody's fool", which held true her entire life. Kathy is survived by her daughters, Kieve & Pascale Laviolette, her brothers Bob & Daniel Currell, and her close friend and former spouse Mike DeSante. She will be deeply missed. True to her selfless disposition and unique character, Kathy made it clear she did not want a traditional memorial service. We have chosen to respect her wishes and plan to celebrate her life in a way that feels authentic to her, sometime in the near future.
