Miller-Gustin 6th Annual Bull & Female Sale September 30, 2019

Jerry, Brennan and I, at Miller-Gustin, would like to welcome you to the 6th Annual Miller-Gustin Bull & Female Sale.

September 30, 2019 Welcome to the 6th annual Miller-Gustin Bull and Female Sale. It is my pleasure to work with these two performance-based programs. My hats off to them for breeding cattle that excel for traits of economic importance. The bulls selling not only excel for those traits, but their progeny will meet the consumer demand for high quality red meat.

It’s hard to believe that this is our sixth sale and we are excited to bring you the best bulls and females we have ever offered. It’s very common for producers to say this but through extensive embryo transfer and artificial insemination, we are able to offer the highest quality, most functional bulls in the breed.

Getting into the offering, the LOT 1 bull is without question one of the most unique individuals to sell anywhere this Fall. As you study the data, individual performance and raw power 804 possess it’s evident he is in a class all to himself. This LOT 1 bull has 11 traits in the TOP 1% of the breed for traits of value. The LOT 2 bull is a flush brother and challenges his brother in all regards. Lot 3 is the #2 G A R Sunrise son of the breed for $B and ranks among the top 1% for the new multi trait $C. The Lot 4 bull is possibly one of the most interesting bulls to sell. Study the CED, BW, Marbling, REA, $B and $C on 8SF3.

We have been careful not to chase extreme EPDnumbered cattle, but instead, functional, real world, moderate cattle while also paying attention to phenotype. This being said, we still exceed breed average in almost every category.

If you need to add females to your program, I ask you to study the ones selling here. Leading off the female division is one of my personal favorites. The 4Q8 cow has done all that has been asked of her. This cow hasn’t missed, and this is evident in her sons selling as LOTS 3, 6, 8, 9, and 18. The registered bred and open heifers selling are cutting-edge genetics with the future in mind. There will be future donors in this group. The commercial females selling are bred similar to the registered females, and just as good. One would be hard pressed to find a set this good anywhere for sale. You really need to see them.

Dear Friends,

We stand behind our cattle, and if you, the customer, have any issues, let us know. With sincerity, we appreciate your interest and more so your desire to improve your herd with our cattle – we work daily to improve our cattle for you. We welcome you to view the cattle at the farm and look forward to working with you. Sincerely,

Craig Miller

If you have any questions or I can be of assistance in anyway- please do not hesitate to call me at 540-290-4251. All the cattle selling are the result of disciplined matings, with function, profitability, sustainability in mind. All the registered cattle selling are A.I. sired for predictability. Sincerely,

Jason Arehart Retaining 1/2 Semen Interest

This year’s bulls will sell with semen interest and revenue sharing. The buyer is 100% in control of possession of bull and will get full salvage value of the bull. Miller-Gustin is reserving the right to share in semen sales in the future if semen sales become a possibility. Bulls are often discovered as they mature and begin to prove themselves through their calves. For this reason, we will be retaining 1/2 interest in semen. Because of the potential of our bulls, we will keep semen interest in all bulls sold. If you choose to collect semen from a Miller-Gustin bull, that semen is 100% yours at your cost. If Miller-Gustin choose to collect from a bull, they will have the right to do so at Miller-Gustin’s own expense for their own use. Collection would be arranged at the convenience of the owner.

Care and Handling of Yearling Bulls

Yearling bulls continue to grow and develop. They should continue to gain two to three pounds a day, which means they should receive quality feed, including hay and mineral, daily. Additional grain of as much as ten pounds per day would certainly benefit these bulls.

Breeding-Season Care

Yearling bulls’ ability to breed cows depends a great deal on management. Watch your bulls to make sure cattle are being settled. Rest your bulls, if possible, and also give them additional grain. Typically, a yearling bull can breed females equivalent to his age in months. Example: A 16-month-old bull should be able to breed 16 females. It is never a good practice to incorporate a yearling bull into a herd of cattle that has existing mature bulls.

Post-Breeding Care

Evaluate your bulls after the breeding season. Do not mix yearling bulls with mature bulls for the reasons of fighting and injury. More mature bulls will also consume the majority of feeds. Also incorporate proper parasite control and vaccinate according to the advice of your local veterinarian.

Miller-Gustin Breeding Guarantee

We guarantee that all bulls sold by Miller-Gustin are fertile to the best of our knowledge and have passed a Breeding Soundness Exam 30 to 45 days prior to the sale. Although all bulls have passed a BSE, we know certain problems can arise after you receive your purchase. To help ensure your investment, we guarantee all bulls selling against breeding injury, and to be sound breeders for the first breeding season. Breeding season is defined as the 90-day period following the first turnout of the bulls. We will provide you with a satisfactory replacement, if available, or issue you a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage received for that bull. This is not a life insurance policy, however. We will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or dies for any reason.

American Angus Association $Value Indexes

Dollar value indexes, or $Values, are a tool used to select for several traits at once based on a specific breeding objective. An economic index approach takes into account genetic and economic values as well as the relationships between traits to select for profit. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. $M is built off of a self-replacing herd model where commercial cattlemen replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% in subsequent generations. Remaining cull females and all male progeny are sold as feeder calves. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance from birth to weaning. $W assumes that producers retain 20% of their female progeny for replacements and sell the rest of their cull female and male progeny as feeder calves. Over time, increased selection pressure on $W will increase weaning and maternal milk traits while also continuing to increase mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes commercial producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis with no considerations of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Grid Value ($G), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, facilitates simultaneous multi-trait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit. $B represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid. Combined Value ($C), an index expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.

“You can be on the right track, but you better keep moving OR you will get run over.” This little phrase comes to mind when I think of Miller Gustin cattle. Craig and Nancy, Jerry, and Brennan have been fantastic to work with in helping improve my small commercial herd. They are always moving forward with genetic improvement while producing sound, functional cattle. I especially appreciate the care and attention to detail they provide to all of their animals. Get to know these guys and see what they have to offer! ~Addison Bowman 13

Lucia and Gramp (Jerry) - Our grandkids from Okinawa visit every summer. Of the three, Lucia especially likes the farm and the cattle. She even insists on wearing attire like Gramps.

Registered Bred Heifers It seems like our industry is continuously under attack for environmental impact and negative health impacts. It is important that we as cattle producers educate ourselves with the facts. We have a good story to tell and we need to take every opportunity to tell the public. American Angus Association Selection Tools

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis.

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

FOOT SCORE Claw Set (Claw), is expressed in units of claw-set score. A lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set, which is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced. Foot Angle (Angle), is expressed in units of foot-angle score. A lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle, which is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.

CARCASS

The genetic evaluation produces a single set of EPDs for carcass traits where the units of measure are in trait format and analyzed on an ageconstant basis. Carcass Weight (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of sires. other sires. Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s Fat Thickness (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured other sires. between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning $VALUE INDEXES gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant $Value Indexes, reported in dollars per head, are multi-trait selection amount of feed consumed. indexes where a higher value suggests more profit. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s on average, compared to progeny of other sires if sires were randomly ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. other sires. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), expressed in dollars per head, Yearling Height (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to the that of other conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims sires. to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s Scrotal Circumference (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor production. of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Weaned Calf Value ($W), expressed in dollars per head, provides the expected difference in future progeny preweaning performance Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle from birth to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $W increases temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in weaning and maternal milk traits while increasing mature cow size. a sire’s offspring compared to another sire. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per MATERNAL year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heifers favorable when comparing two animals. Components for computing during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and direction, and the EPD is reported in percentage units. energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes commercial producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis with no considerations of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade.

Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid to milk and mothering ability. merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires. Mature Weight (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning daughters of other sires. performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Mature Height (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase, daughters of other sires. and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid.
