It seems that no communication during the present year would be in order without giving thanks and praise for the bountiful moisture we have enjoyed this growing season. While I know it presented its challenges, let’s be honest. It was great to have green grass and clover growing even during July and August of this year. Cattle prices have been strong, and our industry truly needs more cows. Times may be the best we ever remember to invest in better genetics. The bulls selling offer you different choices to select for the traits which you feel will best improve your program. As always, all of the data is available for you. While there are distinct differences, the basics of our program are bred into each individual. Calving ease, rapid growth, carcass quality with thickness and improved muscle continue to define our objective. The females selling provide an opportunity to add some solid, sound, productive genetics to your program. The cattle are selling because it is what we do. It is our business to sell breeding stock. The females selected are based primarily on expected calving date. I realize the earlier my cows calve, the older more ready for service are the bulls I have to sell to you in November. We both benefit. Please be aware of the Simmental influence in some of the bulls and females selling. This is part of the plan. With the bulls we make available to you the opportunity for controlled introduction of a superior hybrid product into your program. The females, without the use of sexed semen, come along as part of the project. With the purchase of these females, you can move your commercial program or Simmental program ahead more rapidly. Just as I mentioned the rain early in this letter, because it is easy for us all to talk about the weather, I want to mention that I pray that your spirituality and walk with God continues to grow and become more real each day. With all of today’s stress and demands you may ask how you can find the time and way. The time comes through your discipline, the Way is perfectly clear as proclaimed by our Savior Jesus Christ in John 14:6. Why SimAngus?
According to the USDA Meat Animal Research Center, the Angus breed is the top British breed for calving ease, weaning weight, post weaning gain, percent choice, carcass weight and feed efficiency. The Simmental breed is the top Continental breed for all of the same traits. With SimAngus you get the best of both the British and Continental breeds for all of the most economically important traits. Pounds - Whether you are looking to thicken up your calves or just have more pounds to sell, these Simmental/Angus bulls will add the muscle and frame that the graders love to see and producers love to weight. Hybrid Vigor - Often composite or crossbred cattle exceed our expectation based on what we know about the sire and dam. This difference is termed hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor also helps the traits that we have trouble selecting for such as fertility, longevity, and calf vigor. A word about EPDs Last fall the American Simmental Association released an updated EPD base combined with the Red Angus Association. These EPDs are closer to the AAA EPDs but are still different. The EPDs on these SimAngus bulls and females can not be compared to their Angus counterparts. You may notice that the SimAngus do not have $B or $W, instead they have All Purpose Index (API) and Terminal Index (TI). The API assumes that bulls will be bred to cows and heifers, replacements will be kept, and all steers will be fed out and sold on the grid. Since calving ease, maternal calving ease, stayability, marbling and growth all factor into the API, it is most useful if you may keep some daughters. The TI assumes that bulls will be bred to only mature cows and all the calves will be fed out and sold on the grid so growth and carcass traits factor most heavily in the TI. Therefore TI is the most useful index for someone looking to increase pounds of calf to sell. Both indexes are expressed at dollars per calf over the lifetime of the bull. So if a bull sires 20 calves each year for 5 years he will sire 100 calves in his lifetime. If bull A has a TI of 0 and bull B has a TI of 50, then bull B is worth $50 per calf times 100 calves or $5000 more over his lifetime.
