Our partners in herd health maintenance are Dr. Bobby Frank (804-366-2870) and Dr. Bom Harris (804-499-0974). Both are very familiar with our bulls. All bulls selling will have passed a complete Breeding and structural Soundness Exam. See terms and conditions for more information on purchase and delivery. Edgewood Angus has a complete wellness program to ensure that our buyers are purchasing optimum health into their herds. We work with our veterinarians to vigorously test for infectious disease and maximize herd immunity to protect our herd and yours. All calves are tested at birth for BVDV. Additional testing is performed as dictated by sale and transport requirements. Our vaccine program (below) begins at birth and is maintained annually throughout life. Integrated parasite management is used to control both internal and external parasites in all stock. This program minimizes sickness and maximizes productivity as part of our commitment to excellence when managing our herd. Edgewood Farm is located on VA 30 in West Point, Virginia. For those using GPS, the physical address of the farm is 28225 King WIlliam Road, West Point, VA. A map and directions can be found on page 3 of this catalog.

The bulls will be penned and available for view at the farm beginning at at 9:00 a.m. on sale day. Bulls are also available for viewing at the farm prior to November 28th. Please call Pete at 757-880-7274 to visit.

Cattle sell under the standard terms and conditions as outlined by American Angus Association. There is no charge for delivery in the continental U.S.. The bulls can remain at Edgewood Angus at no charge until April 15th.

The Method Genetics index values are derived from Method Genetics EPDs combined with industry-focused economic weightings. The Method EPDs are generated from a multi-trait, ‘single-step’ genetic evaluation that uses per-

formance measures, ancestral pedigree, and available DNA genotypes. This single-step approach incorporates the genotypes directly into the genetic evaluation process and was implemented at Method in the summer of 2014.

Method Genetics Index / Percentile

The Maternal Production Index is reported in dollars per calf produced from the breeding herd with Angus-based genetics. It encompasses direct and maternal calving ease, heifer pregnancy, weaning growth, maternal milk, and mature size differences in a scenario where replacement females are retained and calves are marketed at weaning.

There are no provisions for calving ease or maternal traits, with the assumption that all calves are under a retained ownership scenario fed out and marketed on a premium quality-based grid.

The story behind the Edgewood Angus bull guarantee… Each bull in the sale today, and any other time for that matter, has undergone an intense scrutiny for reproductive and structural soundness. They must pass the Society of Theriogenology breeding soundness exam. Each bull is individually observed at rest and during movement to pick up defects such as splaying, cow hocks, post legged and lameness etc. Each bull is scored by using the American Angus Association system of hoof and leg evaluation. Joints are checked for effusion. And finally, we pick up a rear leg and look at the bottom of the hoof for early signs of corkscrew claw. All animals at Edgewood Angus undergo an intense and evolving immunization program as well as internal and external parasite control. Each animal is tested for BVDV PI and Anaplasmosis. Clinical surveillance and herd testing have never revealed the presence of Johnes disease at Edgewood. You may ask “why go to all this work and expense”? After all, any breeder can give some sort of warranty and be secure in the knowledge that most bulls can muster enough semen to get a few cows pregnant…or that bulls can walk around the pasture well enough to mount a cow in heat. At least for a while. All this work at Edgewood Angus is not done to avoid paying the warranty. The reason this is done is to identify the bulls that can get a lot of cows pregnant in a hurry, and to do it for years to come. So, the guarantee helps protect your investment in the bull and the scrutiny helps protect your calf crop.

How it Works:

Our program begins with a FREE genetic evaluation based on the current/past herd sires used in your program. We evaluate the sires used in your herd based on their growth and carcass merit characteristics. A herd that qualifies for Top Dollar Angus has cattle that are at least 50% Angus or Red Angus and also ranks in the top 25% of its respective breed for growth and carcass merit. Once qualified, our team provides boots on the ground to share this valuable information with buyers looking for high quality cattle that will go on feed and perform. AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION SELECTION TOOLS Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted whether the animal has a genotype and the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis. Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), feed efficiency expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Yearling Weight (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Height (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to the that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Maternal Milk (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Mature Weight (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. Mature Height (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires. MANAGEMENT Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility in a sire’s offspring compared to another sire. Claw Set (Claw), is expressed in units of claw-set score, a lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced toes. Foot Angle (Angle), is expressed in units of foot-angle score, a lower EPD is more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with an angle closer to 45 degrees at the pastern and appropriate toe length and heel depth. Pulmonary arterial pressure EPD (PAP), is expressed in millimeters of Mercury (mmHg), with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire should produce progeny with a lower PAP score to decrease the risk of progeny contracting high altitude disease most commonly experienced at 5,500 ft or greater in elevation.

CARCASS Carcass Weight (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling (Marb), is expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling MATERNAL score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Heifer Pregnancy (HP), is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of Ribeye Area (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first–calf heifers during a normal breeding ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. season. Cow Energy Value ($EN), is expressed in dollar savings per cow each year due to lower cow maintenance energy requirements (due to lactation and body size) with a larger number being more favorable. Feedlot Value ($F), expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning feedlot merit (growth and feed efficiency) compared to progeny of other sires assuming producers retain ownership of cattle and sell on a carcass weight basis. Grid Value ($G), expressed in dollars per carcass, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit, including quality and yield grade attributes, compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B), expressed in dollars per carcass, represents the expected average differences in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot and sell on a carcass merit grid. Combined Value ($C), an index, expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.

Simmental Indexes All Purpose Index (API): Evalutes sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sires for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not use TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an exta $6,000, over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 ows over 4 years ($50 diff x 30 hd x 4 yr = $6000). A percentile ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. Current Average Sim Hybrid API Index is +120.9 and TI is +68.1
