Introduction The 2018 directory you now hold in your hands was created to not only provide you with current membership information; it was also created to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Virginia Hereford Association. To reach this goal we have included interesting stories and articles that will hopefully pique your interest in Hereford cattle and our Association. We have also included with this directory a copy of the first VHA Newsletter printed in October 1968. As you read through the pages, you will see that many folks contributed to the contents, from juniors who are just getting started on their journey with Herefords to people like James and Barbara Bennett, Barbara Knabe and Bill Perry who were there at the very first organizational meeting in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1968. None of these folks are professional authors but are people like you, and they have simply poured out their heart and soul on these pages to inform and entertain you. Countless interesting people and events have helped shape this organization since its beginning, and that continues to this day. The stories you will read here are not intended to read like a major historical manuscript, but to give you a basic understanding of who we are and how we got here. If you wish to learn more, please find a copy of The Birth of a Breed, by Orville Sweet, or the book written right here in Virginia, Virginia’s Cattle Story, by Katharine Brown & Nancy Sorrells. If more knowledge through entertainment is what you wish for, then the 2015 VHA history video is a great choice for you to view or the movie, The Rare Breed staring James Stewart and Maureen O’Hara is great for the entire family to watch. Whatever avenue you take to “dig a little deeper”, we hope that you will find this directory to not only be informative but very enjoyable.

It is with great pleasure and pride for me to welcome you to the 50th Anniversary Directory of the Virginia Hereford Association. This is an achievement to be proud of.

I would like to express my gratitude to our founders who had the insight to develop such a great organization and for what it has accomplished. In the past 50 years we have developed a Junior program, Junior show, South Eastern Regional Jackpot show, Junior Scholarship program, Virginia Finest bull program, two annual production sales and Heifer Program for Juniors.

I remember 40 some years ago, I was introduced to the Hereford Breed by being selected to have a chapter FFA Hereford heifer. Man, was I ever excited to have my first registered animal. I remember Peggy Moore helped me by giving me tips on raising cattle and helping me get the heifer bred. I will never forget her kindness. I left the farm in my early 20’s but became involved again with my wife’s father, raising Angus. After he turned the farm over to us we went back to my first love, Herefords. It was the kindness of members in this organization that helped us get established with Herefords. I will forever be grateful to all those that helped us.

Today, I see the kindness of our members still helping others get started in the Hereford industry. It now gives my family great pleasure to be able to help others as the organization has helped us. That is what VHA is all about. We have a group of members, all with the same goal of promoting the Hereford breed.

With this being our 50th Anniversary, we have included articles about some of our past and present members as well as other historical information. Please take time, sit back and enjoy the great stories within this directory. Feel free to reach out to our members for advice and guidance. If you are not a member, consider joining us in promoting the Hereford breed and VHA.

In the 2012 directory, the late Sid Rogers wrote, “The VHA membership represents people with a diversity of life experiences, abilities, knowledge, skill levels and perspectives. Even when we disagree, we share our love of family, country and Hereford cattle.” Those words ring true today.

It is my hope that others see our enthusiasm over this spectacular breed and want to join us.

A Heart for Herefords It began with a heart, a heart they had for cattle. Whether they had grown up with cattle, inherited land, fulfilled a dream, or discovered a new love, cattle were their passion. As their herds grew, so did the need to market their breed. In 1915, breeders in Virginia organized themselves into the Virginia Hereford Association, consisting primarily of horned animals. Occasionally, here in Virginia and throughout the nation, an animal would be born naturally without horns, or “polled”.

These animals were then bred together, and thus, a “rarity emerged to become a standard!” Due to its small genetic base, however, it took many years for the Polled Hereford breed to increase its numbers. Through both the wars, the association continued to represent breeders of both polled and horned Herefords. By the 1960’s, Polled Hereford numbers had increased, and their popularity was on the rise. Their breeders began to pull away from the Horned/Polled association, with dreams and desires of forming a Polled association of their own. Cattlemen met innumerable times on an informal basis to share ideas of how they could help one another, share resources, and brainstorm as to how they could each contribute to a path that would lead them to unify and to become a body which would fulfill the needs of each of its members.

There were organizations of its kind in many other states, and Polled Hereford breeders in the Old Dominion knew that it was their time.

And so it began: long distant calls on rotary phones, traveling, often great distances, for meetings, “networking” before it was “networking”, to create a Virginia association that would be closely connected to the American Polled Hereford Association, but would serve the needs of Polled Hereford breeders in Virginia, promoting the small herds as well as the larger, nationally known herds, marketing bulls in the commercial cattle business, as well as establishing a foundation for the female market. Harry Knabe liked to say that “the Virginia Polled Hereford Association, as it was originally named, was created out of an economic necessity to promote the advantages of the Polled breed”.

From the heart came a vision, and the vision was shared. From a need came a goal, and the goal was shared. From the goal came a reality, and on April 26, 1968, in Lynchburg, Virginia, seventy charter members formed the Virginia Polled Hereford Association under the leadership

of Harry Knabe, Charles Combs, Kent Loving, Robert Alger, Bob Parrott, James Bennett, Reid Putney, Wayne Johnson, W. O. Clarke, D.E. Kelly, and J. Waller Callison. In 1964, the American Polled Hereford Association hired Bill Perry to organize state associations throughout his territory, which included Virginia. He was a key component to our Association obtaining our charter in 1968. In addition, breeders Marvin Minor, Jr., Ray Rudacille, Alton Willingham, Don Richardson, Jasper Persinger and Fred Scott were very involved in the early years of the Association. F. T. Duncan and Jimmy Powell held annual bull sales in Staunton, VA and Dwight Houff managed several successful sales, which also increased interest in Polled Herefords.

Directors were chosen from all parts of the state so that breeders were equally represented. James Bennett remembers this as a time that when they came together, they made decisions collectively, leaving their own prejudices and self interest at the door. It was a time of great energy and pride.

By 1974, the directory showed an increase in membership of 30%. By 1980 the membership included 136 farms. Since then, the membership has held steady with about 100 members. One of our proudest moments was through public recognition. According to The Virginia Cattle Story: The First Four Centuries written by Katherine Brown and Nancy Sorrels, it came in the form of a letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., a Hereford breeder himself. He sent his congratulations on successful sales, field days, and in particular, the Standard of Perfection Show in Richmond. He noted Virginia had more beef cattle than all the states north of her combined, and gave praise to the Polled Hereford breeders of the Old Dominion!

The nineties brought several changes. Between 1995 and 1996, The Virginia Polled Hereford Association changed its name back to the Virginia Hereford Association to include both Polled and horned Herefords.

For a number of years the theme for the association’s sales was The Virginia Grand Dams. Breeders would allow a sale committee of The Virginia Hereford Association to pick one cow from each Breeder’s herd in order to create the most attractive sale. It created great excitement

and anticipation and the cows sold very well. Don Richardson recalls the time that the committee arrived at James Bennett’s Knoll Crest Farm. One member of the committee had done his research, and knew the cow they wanted to choose. Now, it seems James had assembled a list of sale lots to show the committee, and the cow in question was not included. He was very reluctant to send the cow that the committee had selected, and it took quite some doing to even locate the cow on the farm! With persistence and gentle persuasion, James relented, and it was a decision he would not regret. At a time when national cattle prices were generally low, James Bennett’s cow sold for over $20,000!

As time went on, it was felt that the sale name should reflect a broader geographic area. The fall sale became the Mid-Atlantic Fall Bonanza Sale, and The Mid-Atlantic Spring Bonanza Sale was added, both of which continue to be sponsored by the Virginia Hereford Association today.

Around this same time, 1994-1995, the Virginia Hereford Association initiated a program to create enthusiasm and publicity for the breed. Historically, Virginia Tech had included Herefords in its beef cattle program, but by the mid nineties, the Hereford presence had disappeared. Thus, students studying beef science and farming did not see Hereford Cattle. The Association created a unique program for its members whereby every farm would donate one or two of its top cows, and it was publicized as “My Cow Went to Virginia Tech!” It was a WinWin for all. The descendents of those cattle are still present at Virginia Tech today.

Technology played a large role in changes we have seen. The Internet has become our source for information, and emails our voice. Though we no longer regularly travel as a full body to meetings, or receive a hand typed newsletter, our board meets quarterly and the approved minutes are posted on the Virginia Hereford Association website. As a body, we hold our annual meeting before the Fall Sale to elect officers, extend our hands, exchange ideas, share a meal and encourage one another as breeders and as friends. One of our founding leaders reflects that there are no selfish people who succeed in the cattle industry. We have a heart for our own cattle, but we have a responsibility to promote our breed.

and encouraging and mentoring new breeders are all ways we can share costs and marketing opportunities, as well as strengthen the Virginia Hereford Association.

It is agreed that somewhere during the formation of the Virginia Hereford Association, and over the years of working together for a common good, people came first, then cattle. There is a pride in our accomplishments, and a respect for our fellow breeders that makes us family. From the energy, dedication and vision of these early leaders, the family of Virginia Hereford breeders has continued to flourish and we look to the future generations to continue on the same path laid before us fifty years ago.

Cattle are the industry, breeding is the business, but the heart remains the tie that binds the association together. In the end, perhaps charter member James Bennett puts it best; “People have had a greater influence on my involvement with cattle than cattle have.�

Advice From A Few of the Best:

How to Survive & Thrive in Today’s Cattle Industry

It has been my pleasure to communicate with some of the most respected, successful Hereford breeders in Virginia. Being newer to the Hereford industry, one of the best ways to learn and grow is to get advice from some of the best. I have had the honor of interviewing Mr. James Bennett from Knoll Crest Farm, Mr. Jasper Persinger from Potts Creek Farm and Mr. Don Richardson from Dunrovin Farm. I asked these distinguished gentlemen the following questions: Please give a brief history of your farm. What suggestions would you give for maintaining sustainability and profitability in today’s Hereford market? What suggestions would you offer to a young couple considering entering the Hereford industry today?

Mr. James Bennett from Knoll Crest Farm “In 1944, my father bought four registered Polled Hereford cows from a local Extension agent, who had decided to enter the dairy business. These cows would serve as the beginning of the registered breeding herd at Knoll Crest Farm. We already had a registered Polled Hereford bull, which we always kept to service the dairy and commercial cows. Also, in the mid-1940s, I had saved enough money to buy some heifers of my own. With $600 to spend, I was given the opportunity to have my choice of heifers from two highly respected Polled Hereford breeders. One of these heifers would go on to be shown at a prestigious regional show. I was offered $1,000 for this heifer, which I refused, and these two females would become foundation cows for the Knoll Crest Farm, producing important herd sires and leaving lines of females that would help solidify Knoll Crest Farm’s reputation for producing quality Polled Hereford cattle.”

What suggestions would you give for maintaining sustainability and profitability in today’s Hereford market?

“Over my many years as a Hereford breeder, probably no time has the future of the Hereford bull market been more promising.

opportunity and need of a planned cross-breeding program, a Hereford bull best fits that need. We have seen and identified the development of that trend in our recent bull sales at Knoll Crest Farm.”

What suggestions would you offer to a young couple considering entering the Hereford Industry today?

“Develop a long-range plan that identifies your program as a profitable business plan. Focus your program on the needs of the commercial cattle and beef industry. In doing so you can best serve your fellow seedstock producer. When and if you produce some that your commercial producer cannot afford, don’t let that change your focus from a basic “bread and butter program.” Take advantage of sound new technology – Virginia Tech, Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, USDA Research and Breed Association.”

“To get the greatest benefit from your seedstock operation, develop it into a family farm. Your best crop and greatest reward will be working with and seeing the development of your children and grandchildren.”

Mr. Jasper Persinger Potts Creek Farm “We purchased Potts Creek Farm in July, 1958 with the survey being completed on July 4 of that year. The farm had been neglected with a large barn and a few fences. We tried to rebuild the barn but found that it was beyond repair. With no usable buildings or fences, the fields were totally grown up with white pines that we Jasper with grandaughter Taylor cut for pulp wood and Christmas trees.

Lynn We managed to clear enough land to start our herd with nine (9) registered Hereford heifers. Our first bull, T J Beau Perfection, was purchased at the Virginia Hereford Bull Sale, in Culpeper, Virginia as he was the top bull of the sale. We bought bulls from the top farms in Virginia and West Virginia, such as Knoll Crest and the Morlunda Farm as well as the R W Jones Farm in Georgia, and the Felton Farm in Missouri.

We began using AI, utilizing the best genetics from bulls in America. Over the years our dames have been named “Dames of Distinction”.

“Today our breeding herd contains 30 cows and we strive to AI all on

the same day with clean up bulls to follow. Our Spring calving is usually completed in less than 30 days.”

What suggestions would you give for maintaining sustainability and profitability in today’s Hereford market?

“Always breed to the best Herefords you can buy, using the latest technology available in your breeding program. When selling, give a guarantee and stand behind it!”

“Making a profit is never easy when everything you buy is so expensive.

Having good neighbors works really well to get the job done.”

What suggestions would you offer to a young couple considering entering the Hereford Industry today?

“Breed the best to the best and cull the rest!”

Mr. Don Richardson from Dunrovin Farm “I was born in North Central West Virginia on a hilly, milk by hand, Jersey dairy farm in late 1936. When I was 8 to 10 years old, the dairy herd was phased out and my father, Warren Richardson, replaced Jerseys with Horned Hereford Beef Cattle, with seedstock from the Hillcrest herd of C. A. Smith of Chester, West Don with grandaughters Kelly and Rachel Virginia. They were major players on the national show circuit, with cattle that were mostly derived from the Larry Domino line.

My father taught me about life and gave me a Master’s degree on cattle.

When I was 15, our family and the Herefords were moved to a large farm, Strathmore, near New Market, Va. and the herd swelled to nearly 100 brood cows. I had plenty of work to do with the cattle and loved it, for the most part. Killing baby calves that were genetic dwarfs was not a favorite chore.

Identifying the dwarf gene “carriers” was done by mating a bull to 20 of his

daughters, not by DNA, so this was a long process, and the breed suffered greatly because of it. Strathmore Farm had its first large production sale in December 1954, and scheduled again in Dec. 1955. The latter was the hottest Hereford sale I ever saw. The sale ring was in a large barn. Portable heaters were used to keep the chill off the air in the sale ring. Just before the start, one heater overturned and the entire large facility burned to the ground.

We got all the cattle safely out, and sold them 2 hours later in a roadway near the barn. That effectively ended Strathmore’s brief ascendancy in the Hereford world.

Other business reversals and 15 years later, my father started a small Polled Hereford Farm near Timberville, Va. I had gotten a few academic degrees and was able to buy an old small farm near Crozet, Va. and, using Dad’s advice, purchased a few docile Polled Herefords to spruce up the farm.

They have been doing that for 45 years. They also have provided heifers for 4 children and 4 grandchildren (so far) to take care of and learn responsibility, to love on and occasionally show.”

What suggestions would you offer to a young couple considering entering the Hereford Industry today?

Patience, endurance, honesty, humility, ingenuity and integrity are just a few of the traits that make these fine men stand out. Hereford breeders have a commonality in their love for the breed and we take pride in who we are as the Virginia Hereford Association. We take pleasure in all the accomplishments of our members. As an Association we build each other up and are pleased at all the outstanding advances in the industry.

Sound, proven quality genetics and superior outcomes is our desire, but maintaining honesty, integrity and being good stewards of the land and our God given gifts in life is what determines our success not only on the farm, but in life in general.

Member Memories and Stories From the Desk of Don Richardson Everyone has several great stories from their times with James Bennett. The following is one of my favorites, as told by James.

Years ago, an “older” farmer came to buy a bull. They looked at several, the farmer favored one and asked to see his dam. James drove the potential buyer in Jamess’ car to a large field and stopped on a little knoll. James was doing most of the talking on this very warm afternoon. They got out and James started calling the cows, because they were resting comfortably in an adjacent, shaded depression in the field. James persisted in calling and finally, one, then two, then all the cows began to get up and approach the two farmers. As the cows got to the car, James, still talking, walked to the back of the car, opened the trunk and pulled out a bucket of grain.

The buyer told James, “I’m sure glad you had that bucket of grain in the trunk. If a person would lie to his cows, he would lie to his customers.”

What a beautiful true story, humbly told by a man who doesn’t lie or misrepresent, and (with a huge assist from Barbara) has passed that and other enduring legacies to children, grandchildren, and all of us who have been blessed to know the Bennetts at Knoll Crest Farm.

Harry was a native of Midlothian, VA, the former owner of Knabe Motor Company, and a breeder of Polled Herefords for 65 years.

In 1958, when I purchased my first Polled Hereford heifer from Harry, he had already been in the cattle business for some time. As a boy he began by helping his uncle milk Guernseys every morning before school. Then, at age fourteen, he purchased a Hereford steer and with the proceeds from the sale of that steer, he bought his first Polled Hereford female, beginning a lifelong involvement with the breed. Immediately understanding the need for quality genetics, Harry began to purchase animals from some of the best herds available. I still clearly remember the day SLR Super Domino arrived at Winterfield Farm all the way from Mississippi! The entire community turned out to see this impressive bull. Harry regularly showed his cattle and won many events throughout the region.

Beginning in 1961, his herd became a participant in the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association. In 1968, Harry was a founding member of the then Virginia Polled Hereford Association, and served as the organization’s first president.

His passion for his Polled Herefords was second only to his love and devotion to his family and friends, and his life-long dedication to helping others. His influence on the youth of the community through church and civic involvement was remarkable. As a twenty four year old, he became a 4-H volunteer and founded the Circle M 4-H club that introduced many of the local kids to agriculture, public speaking, leadership skills, etc., and a bunch of fun. Personally speaking, I can honestly say that seldom does a day go by, either on the farm or in the office, that I don’t use skills I learned through my 4-H experience and Harry’s leadership. The club’s legacy continues to this day through the lives of its former members who have gone on to achieve excellence in many different walks of life - and yet continued to rely on Harry as a mentor and friend.

His involvement with cows and kids continued on a more personal basis after his marriage to his wife Barbara. The tradition continued as a family, with their children, Ray and Nancy, showing calves in Page 22

regional and Junior Nationals across the U.S., and then topped it all off when Barbara was named National Pollette of the Year in 1996!

Sadly, Harry has passed on and that great smile and laugh is greatly missed. Neither man nor beast ever had a better friend.

Dick Baltimore Cedar Plains Farm Member, Virginia Hereford Association Board of Directors Charter member, Circle M 4-H Club From the Desk of Ken and Doris Worley Memories From Southwest Virginia The Worley family, Kenneth, Doris, Dwight and Stacy, better known as Diamond W Farm came about around 1976 when Dwight decided as a small, little boy that he would like to show cattle. The search for calm, easy doing cattle began. We found Mr. W.D. Young, a VPHA Director, and his wife, Mrs. Margaret Young, just up the road in Glade Spring, VA, with a herd of very desirable Polled Herefords.

We bought a heifer for Dwight from Mr. Young and when we went to haul her home there were two heifers in the stall. His remark was, well, Stacy needs one also. So we were hooked and Tinkerbell came to live on our farm! Later we bought “Dottie� from Mr. Ernest Stepp in Chilhowie, VA. Dottie was awesome and we hauled her around to all the local shows and even to Virginia State Fair. She was always ready to go when the trailer came out and the water hose was hooked up.

Marvin Minor was ready to give up his job as Junior Advisor and we were talked into tackling that job along with raising Polled Herefords and two growing boys. The Virginia Hereford Association was gracious enough to provide the Juniors money to buy ribbons, trophies and banners for the important shows. As time went on, the boys were showing at the Junior Beef Round Up in Harrisonburg and the ladies sitting on the bleachers behind me kept saying that they thought those Worley boys were too old for their classes or maybe 2018-2020 VHA Directory Page 23

too old to be showing at all and finally I smiled and said, “No, the ages are correct ‘cause I was there for their birth days.” I had a giggle and hopefully they did too.

One summer we had a surprise visit from the Knabe family, Harry, Barbara, Ray and Nancy and their show calves on their way back to Midlothian, VA from the Junior National that year. That was such a neat visit. Our son Dwight served on the National Junior Hereford Board at the end of high school and first year at Virginia Tech and learned lots, made lots of contacts and lasting friendships across the country. We met the Bennett family and took bulls to Red House to be fed and sold there on Bull Hill. We have enjoyed knowing that family for many, many years.

As the years rolled by, Ken & I made many trips up I-81 to shows, meetings, sales and to deliver bulls for testing at Virginia’s Finest feed lot. Harrisonburg became very familiar to us as it was the hub of activity. We gave up Junior Advisor duties and began putting together two sale catalogs per year through which we met lots of great Polled Hereford enthusiasts from all over the area. One very important one was Dale Stith, Auctioneer, who tried to get each and every consignor the top dollar for their animals. After our boys were off to Virginia Tech, I became a Pollette and was honored to be involved in helping the Queens by Cross Stitching a sash for the VA Queen and VA Princess and Barbara Knabe finished those with a backing.

I want to thank the VHA for their continuing support of the Junior Association, without their financial backing, activities would have been difficult. But the time came, when I would call for donations I would be asked “How much do you need this time?” Love you Dickie Baltimore!

One very important and exciting person we met was Lou Ellen Keay who was farm manager for Mr. Harry Grandis, in Short Pump Virginia. She went on to Big T Ranch in Ohio where she met and married Jeff Harr and produced daughter, Keayla. We bought Page 24

a heifer in Triple JJJ’s sale that came from FFV, Bob Kube, and we then went back and bought her dam, Marla, from which we had 16 daughters, granddaughters, and great granddaughters in our herd at one time. In 2017 we sold her granddaughter who was 14 years old and still producing.

Ms. Peggy Moore became our friend and was always involved in all things Hereford. We went with her to Junior Nationals, Eric Walker’s Sales, Breeders Classic, Lou Ellen & Jeff ’s first sale, North Carolina Spring Sale and many others. She was always busy supporting any Junior that crossed her path and needed a hand up or a pat on the back.

Others who have been supportive and very special along our way have been Sid Rogers and Dorothy, Ms. Beulah Lillard and Charlie Brooks, Bob & Lucy Kube, Bob Schaffer, Rodney & Barbara Phillips, Virgil Ewing, Don Richardson, John Y. Faulkner, Carolyn Roberson, Jeri Hart, Kenneth & Bobbi Fritts, the Kenley’s, Paul & Mary Louise Peaslee, Jasper & Alice Persinger, John & Karen Fleishman, Doug & Melissa Harrison and so many more that I know I am missing.

We lost two very special friends along the way to the Angus breed, those being Dwight Houff of Mt. Crawford, who was a great supporter to youth and adults and Edgar P. Fannon from Jonesville, VA in Lee County. There were lots of good times for the Worley’s with Edgar and his daughters, Jennifer and Ann, going to shows and fairs.

I would be greatly remiss if I didn’t include “Hereford” our red and white Aussie. He was my companion, my cowhand, my protector and entertainer. He was born Oct. 13, 1984, and came to live with us at 6 weeks of age as a big ball of fluff. He passed away October 20, 1997 and will always be fondly remembered and loved. He loved the cows and baby calves and would get lost among the babies because of his coloring. He loved to work cattle, go groundhogging and going to shows. He made many friends and entertained us all. Mr. Claude Austin from NC fed him ham biscuits for breakfast and he shared the Estep brother’s ice cream cones at State Fair.

The true joy of our lives was the addition of our granddaughter, Jillian “Jilli” Faris Worley, on May 25, 2000, in Medford, Oregon and now her dad, Dwight, gets to show pigs with her. She loves Polled Herefords and loves showing livestock; wonder why? Uncle Stacy enjoys attending Oregon State Fair with Jilli and her award winning show pigs.

I will end by saying the cream of the crop must be that Ken & I helped host the Southeastern Regional Junior Show 2016 in our hometown of Abingdon, VA. Thanks to Tommy & Kim Coley, Charlie, Meredith & Olivia Williams, Jack & Kathi Sheehan, Dr. Dan Eversole, Steve & Rosemary Sifford, Tommie Meade, Andrew Cole, the NJHA and many local businesses who contributed food, prizes and support. Our “bronze bull” has a place of honor on our Mantle.

Thanks ever so much for that great honor. Forgive me if I skipped your name but you are forever in our hearts and we love you all.

Ken & Doris Worley, Diamond W Farm 25052 Rich Valley Road, Abingdon, VA 24210 (276)944-3458, (276)356-3458 cell Kworley123@earthlink.net From the Desk of John and Karen Fleishman Hereford Family Memories As I think back across the thirty some years that Herefords have been on Maplewood Farm, there are numerous people who come to mind who have had a positive impact on our family and who have become good friends. There are two however, who not only had a big impact on our farming operation, they made a lasting impression to many of us in the Virginia Hereford Association.

The first is Warren Richardson, who owned Longview Farm in Timberville VA. As we started building our herd of Herefords the fall of 1984, Warren sold us our very first cows and remained a mentor Page 26

for a number of years. Our long lasting journey with Herefords begin when he sold us 4 young Hereford females in November of 1984 and more early in 1985. One of those first “girls” was Longview Miss NT 238, a Kiyiwana New Trend daughter, who was a real eye catcher. She and the other females remained in our herd for many years. Warren was a good coach and had many positive things to say about the breed and the industry in general. He had seen Herefords “short” and had seen them “tall”, and he would tell me, “stay middle of the road, John, stay middle of the road.” It seemed like pretty good advice and we have done that for the most part. As we grew to over 40 cows pretty quickly, several other Hereford breeders provided more foundation stock. Kenny Burch and William Lillard, both of Quicksburg, VA sold us “startup cattle” and we also began attending the VA Hereford Association sponsored sales. I soon learned that getting all those cows bred AI was quite a challenge while working away from the farm and Warren saw the opportunity to sell us our first Hereford herd sire in the spring of 1986 when he sold us, Longview Enforcer 113, in which he retained 50% interest. He also sold us his show supplies and his cattle scales which we still use to this day. In August 1986, Longview Enforcer 113 was our very first entry in the Rockingham County Fair and Warren spent “quite a lot” of time with us there that week and at later fairs, talking about Herefords. We lost a very good friend, at his passing.

The other individual who made an impression on our family as well as many others in our Association, is Peggy Moore. Peggy “lived and breathed” Herefords…and Hereford Juniors. Peggy never tired of encouraging kids to show their Herefords and she never tired of working to raise money to support the Junior Association. She worked with the other Polettes to mentor young girls to participate in the Hereford Queen competitions each year and often would offer monetary support when it was needed. One time that stands out in my memories of Peggy was a Junior field day that was held at her farm in 1989. A number of field day participants took Herefords to her farm that day and she was a gracious host. This is just another example of her dedication to Herefords and our Association. All of us lost a dear friend at her passing, however she remains in our 2018-2020 VHA Directory

memories as many of us think back across our time of being in the Hereford family.

Hereford Field Day at Peggy Moore’s - 1989 From the Desk of Cyle DeHaven My Memory of Colonel Sidney Rogers My neighbor, Colonel Sid Rogers, was a somewhat quiet man, whom I admired not only for his love of the Hereford cattle breed but for the knowledge he had of the breed. As a young man, I often gazed over the fence at the red and white cattle on his Rolling Hills Farm. At the young age of eleven, my father and I went to see Colonel Rogers to speak to him about purchasing one of the Hereford bulls he had for sale. I was given first choice of the group and chose Z04. In April of 2014 I was able to purchase Z04, a two year old bull. Mr. Rogers Page 28

took me into his office where I wrote out a check and he shook my hand and said, “You are now the proud owner of your first registered bull, young man.”

Prior to his passing, Mr. Rogers gave me his show box, fitting clippers, tattoo kit and most importantly, the love of Hereford cattle. Several years have gone by and now my family owns his beautiful Rolling Hills Farm, in which his memory and red and white Herefords will live on.

Colonel Rogers was a very thorough man. I remember looking through his farm records and papers after his passing and finding very meticulous instructions on how to hook up a sickle bar mower to the tractor, beginning with starting up the tractor to pulling away.

Another thing I found was his 4-H record books that dated back to 1943, at the age of 9, when he showed at the local county fair, held at Winchester Livestock. When he was just 14 years old he and his sister, Roxanne Rogers, won the state wide fat stock show held in Richmond VA in 1947. This was the first time Frederick County had ever captured this coveted prize. The steer was from the great Super Domino19th and purchased by Sid and Roxanne Rogers for seventy dollars. The steer was fed a ration consisting of molasses, corn, oats, barley and a protein supplement along with mixed hay. Their Grand Champion steer was bought by Colonial Stores for the sum of 60 cents per pound and weighed in at 1,100 lbs. It really impressed me how Mr. Rogers took such pride in the records of his show cattle in his early years with this preciseness continuing into his career.

After graduating from VA Tech in 1956 with a degree in Animal Husbandry he was awarded the State Farmers degree. Mr. Rogers soon left the family farm to become a colonel in the Air Force, in which he achieved countless awards for his many achievements. He served our country until 1983 and at that time returned to the family farm where he continued his Hereford operation. His sister, Roxanne had kept four of the best heifers on her farm in New York State to preserve the Rogers’ family cattle genetics. Mr. Rogers built his new home overlooking Hayfield Road in Winchester and brought some 2018-2020 VHA Directory

of these offspring back to his farm to be part of his herd and his Hereford bull development program.

Mr. Rogers was a neighbor, a friend, a leader and a man to learn from. My only regret is not getting to know him sooner and soaking up his incredible knowledge of the Hereford breeding program. The Rogers family was given one of Virginia’s Century Farm awards for having the farm in the Rogers family for more than 100 years. Since my mother’s grandmother and Mr. Rogers’ mother were sisters, I am actually Mr. Rogers’ great nephew, keeping Rolling Hills Farm in Mr. Rogers’ family after all.

I’m sure Mr. Rogers is looking down onto Rolling Hills Farm with his beloved Hereford cattle grazing, smiling a big smile.

From the Desk of Kim Dean The Virginia Hereford Association: A Wonderful Friend At Hereford Hills Farm we are proud to be members of the Virginia Hereford Association. We started raising Herefords in 2010 and shortly thereafter became members. We cherish the friendships made with the great Hereford breeders of our state. We strongly encourage membership in the Virginia and American Hereford Association. Information learned is invaluable. The Association feels more like family. We are a group of down-to-earth individuals dedicated to promoting the Hereford breed and mentoring juniors to be the Hereford breeders of the future. Hereford families are hard-working, charitable, and humble. When we lost our small animal barn several years ago in a fire, a Virginia Hereford member, Douglas Harrison, graciously volunteered and took time away from his own Hereford operation to help us design and build our new barn. Doug and wife Melissa also have mentored us in our Hereford operation and are an inspiration to others. Member John Fleishman has also mentored us and sold us some of our very first Herefords.

We purchased our Herd bull from Knoll Crest Farm last year and look forward to having more outstanding, quality calves in the future. We value all of our friends in the association.

At Hereford Hills we really look forward to and enjoy taking our Herefords to the local county fair. Fair week is a working vacation.

Time spent with the other farm families is the highlight of the week.

The competition gets better every year. The first time we showed, there were only about two other Hereford breeders in the show barn.

Now the Hereford breed takes up over half the barn. This shows how Hereford popularity is on the rise in our part of the state. More girls and women are showing cattle than ever before and we are seeing an increase in 4H and FFA membership, two other organizations we highly promote. The life lessons children learn from farming and showing animals is immeasurable.

Hereford beef has no comparison. We were quite proud to see Sysco, a leading marketing and distributor of food in our area start 2018-2020 VHA Directory

promoting and selling Certified Hereford Beef ®. I am proud to report that the last 3 steers we took for processing were reported by the owner of the meat processing site to be some of the finest quality beef he has processed. We only wish we had a large enough herd to offer him the thirty a month he requested.

We look forward to many more years raising this great breed of cattle, and continuing to learn and grow from our great friends at the Virginia Hereford Association.

The Virginia Pollette Organization The Virginia Pollettes started in 1985. Some of the original members were Joyce Aigner, Barbara Bennett, Carolyn Freeman, Lynne Hess, Barbara Knabe, Beulah Lillard “Brooks”, Sue Miller, Evelyn Richardson and Doris Worley. Our main goal was to raise money for the Virginia Polled Hereford Queen to help with expenses. Some of the Queens were – Nancy Knabe, Kim Kube, Beth Miller, Becky Young, Sarah Tusing, Cathy Hess, Anne Paige Smith, Rebecca Funkhouser, Sarah Grace Kenley and Cameron Kolinski. The Pollettes always had Polled Hereford Crafts made by members at Virginia Polled Hereford events and provided food at the sales. The money raised went to the Virginia Junior Polled Hereford Association. Before the Virginia Pollette organization existed, Barbara Knabe had a craft table at Hereford events and the money went to the junior organization.

This money was used to support juniors attending Junior Nationals.

Some of the larger projects included two quilts made by the pollettes and raffled at the sales. There was a Polled Hereford flag auctioned at one of the sales. The Pollettes worked very hard to support the juniors and unfortunately the group disbanded in 2002. Even though Page 32

there was no organized group, several individuals continued to work on behalf of the juniors and still continue to this day. Ken and Doris Worley worked diligently and have always had a heartfelt love for the juniors. Peggy Moore was an avid supporter and continued as long as her health would permit before she passed away. Rebecca Monger follows in Peggy’s footsteps and is always working to help the current and future Virginia Junior Hereford kids.

The Amazing Hereford: Nearly Three Centuries In Development

By Kim Dean, BSN, RN: Member of the Virginia Hereford Association

The Hereford breed was founded in 1742. Credited with development of these magnificent creatures is Benjamin Tomkins from Herefordshire, England. Herefords of the 1700’s and early 1800’s were quite larger than today’s Hereford, some weighing well over 3,000 pounds. The breed also had some variations in color, but eventually they evolved to the red, white faced cattle we admire today. The goal of ingenious farmers of that day was to create a beef to serve the rising food market created

by Britain’s Industrial Revolution. Tomkins and his associates desired creating a breed that would grow economically with grass and grain, plus have a rapid average rate of gain. He desired a breed that was easy to rustle, hardy and yielded early maturity and prolificacy. They needed to be economical, efficient and adaptable (known as “The Great Improvers”), with high yields and sound reproductive qualities plus a sunny disposition; the exact qualities we admire about the breed today.

In 1817, statesman Henry Clay is credited with bringing the first Herefords to America. He shipped the cattle across the seas and raised them on his farm in Kentucky. Eventually the breed became absorbed into the market. Making a comeback in 1840 in Albany, New York, William H. Sotham and Erastus Corning began the first U.S. Hereford breeding herd. Other noteworthy founders include Charles Gudgell and Thomas A. Simpson of Missouri. These gentlemen bought and imported the bull Anxiety 4, known as the “father of American Herefords.”

On June 22, 1881 in Chicago a handful of early Hereford breeders gathered and the American Hereford Breeders Association, now known as the American Hereford Association (AHA) was formed. The goals of the organization were 1) To keep breeder’s records and 2) To promote the interest of its breeders. Some years later a man by the name of Warren Gammon developed from the bull Giant and eleven female Herefords the fixed polled trait. In 1910 the American Polled Hereford Association (APHA) was founded. In 1995 the AHA and APHA merged under the American Hereford Association who now Page 34

registers all horned and polled Herefords. In 1964 the AHA developed the Total Performance Records (TPR) service which has proven to be a great benefit to the breed and breeders alike.

Over years of developmental and economical highs and lows the Hereford breed has proven to be dependable, adaptable, and reliable.

Through the development of performance testing, EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values), artificial insemination, embryo transfers, sire evaluations and genetic studies the Hereford breed has become a leader in the cattle industry. Hereford cattle can be seen being raised worldwide. Research studies have proven Hereford beef to be exceptional in quality, therefore leading to the creation of the Certified Hereford Beef brandÂŽ in 1994. Hereford cattle are the benchmark by which other breeds are measured. According to the AHA the following are traits found in todays Herefords: Adaptability, Crossbreeding advantages, Documented feedlot and carcass superiority, Feed efficiency, Fertility, Low maintenance cost, Optimum milk, Optimum muscling, Optimum size and growth, Reproductive Performance, Soundness, and Superior disposition. All of these traits Mr. Tompkins would surely be proud of.

Junior Heifer Program and Scholarship This has been an exciting year for the Virginia Junior Hereford Association with the creation of two new Junior Programs: A Virginia Hereford Association Educational Scholarship and a Junior Heifer Scholarship Program.

The Virginia Hereford Scholarship assists with tuition for Juniors continuing their education at a college or trade school after high school. In 2015, the addition of an Open Show and a Jackpot Show to the Mid-Atlantic Fall Round-Up venue funded the Scholarship.

The first recipient of the $1000 award was Olivia Williams from Fairfield, Virginia. She has been active in the Junior Hereford Association for many years. Olivia has been successful both in the show ring and as a junior leader. She has served in many leadership roles and most recently as the Junior Virginia Association President.

Olivia is currently enrolled in the online program at Colorado State, majoring in Agriculture Business with a minor in Design and Photography.

The Junior Heifer Scholarship Program is designed to supply a show heifer to a qualifying Virginia Junior wishing to become involved in showing Hereford cattle. A female offspring from this animal must be given back to the program, to in turn, fund another junior. Each junior applying for this program will be carefully screened to meet the program criteria.

The inspiration for this program came to Rebecca Monger when Bill Perry bought two of her heifers at a Virginia Hereford Association sale for his North Carolina Junior Heifer Program. By donating a female pair that sold for $3300 in the VHA 2017 Spring Sale, Rebecca ensured that the program had initial funding. In addition, members of the Virginia Herford Association contributed $2,750 to support the program.

Barbara Philips, Melissa Harrison, and Jackie Koontz served as the Selection Committee. After careful consideration, the committee selected Grant McDaniel and Kerrigan Bauserman as the first recipients of the Virginia Junior Heifer Scholarship.

Bradley “Grant” McDaniel is a 14 year old 8th grader at William Monroe Middle School in Stanardsville, Virginia. His first experience with showing cattle was 3 years ago when he showed a crossbred feeder steer at his county fair to see if he “liked it”. Well, he loved it! Two years ago, his grandparents bought a Hereford heifer at the Virginia Hereford Fall Sale for him to show. He fell in love with her personality, disposition and affection, which made him want to be involved with showing and with Hereford cattle. He now has two Hereford heifers; the first he bought with his own money, earned from the sale of his feeder show steers at his county fair and the second is the scholarship Hereford Heifer. Grant is extremely honored to have been selected for the Virginia Hereford Association Heifer Scholarship. “Showing has taught me so much about being responsible, reliable and compassionate,” Grant stated. One of his best moments showing was when his Hereford heifer “Violet” was chosen for Division Reserve Champion at the Hereford Show this past fall. The heifer had earned Grand Champion and Reserve Champion at multiple fairs this past summer but the numbers were very low in her classes, so earning a Reserve Champion ribbon in a larger class was very rewarding and showed that his hard work had paid off.

until my scholarship heifer, Kelsi, came and now they share the title.

Violet is very jealous now and makes a point every day to remind me that she was the first princess and for me to not forget it”. While showing is his main activity, he also plays baseball, hunts and works on the farm with his Pa-paw. Grant would like to be a farmer when he grows up. His farm will include a registered Hereford herd, as well as custom crop work. He is very excited to say that he already has two heifers that are the start of his herd. Grant would also like to thank his parents, Jennifer and Bradley and his grandparents, Jug and Peggy for “supporting me and taking me to show after show. I greatly appreciate their help”.

Kerrigan Bauserman is a 6th grader at Signal Knob Middle School and lives in Strasburg, Virginia. She has been on her small family farm, S & K Farm, since she was a toddler. The first cattle on the farm were registered Hereford cows. She watched her older sister show Hereford heifers and began showing when she was 7 years old. What she loves most about Herefords are their disposition and they make great mothers. Her favorite moments on the farm are helping move and work cattle, feeding calves in the creep, and watching calves being born. Kerrigan wants to go to Virginia Tech and become a game warden or do something in the Agricultural Industry. Off the farm, Kerrigan loves to fish, play sports such as volleyball and basketball, is active in 4-H and FFA, as well as her church. Kerrigan’s new heifer Page 52

is named Pearl. “Pearl and I hit it off the first day. Our personalities make us a great team. She did so well in her first show. I look forward to future shows with her and seeing how she progresses,” Kerrigan says.

The Selection committee was honored to be a part of the start of this new opportunity for Juniors.

Barbara Phillips commented, “I feel like the heifer program is a wonderful opportunity for kids to become involved with cattle. It was exciting and an honor to be on the selection committee for the heifer program. All of the applicants were well qualified making it a difficult choice. It was great meeting the winners and I am looking forward to following them as they make their journey.”

Melissa Harrison stated, “I think the heifer scholarship is a great thing for kids. Being involved in the selection was fun. I really enjoyed reading each kid’s essay and it was a hard decision in the end.”

Rebecca Monger agreed, “It wasn’t an easy task but these ladies did a fantastic job choosing the recipients. I’m so proud of our board and membership for all the support we received. I know these kids are going to do a great job and it makes me excited about the future of farming.”

My Love of Herefords Came Early My Love for the Hereford breed started when I was ten. I got my first steer for my local 4H project. The leader of the club picked out a calf especially for me and it was a Hereford. He knew that since I was small and it was my first steer, a docile calf would be a good fit.

I named him Bud and he was amazing! He was the sweetest, calmest calf and a huge teddy bear. At 1410 pounds, Bud ended up being the reserve champion of the show that year, led around a show ring by a sixty eight pound little girl.

From then on I was in love with Herefords. I decided that I wanted to raise Hereford’s on my home farm, so my Dad, my uncle James and I started Coastal Cattle. Using some of the money that I had earned through 4H, I helped to buy five bred heifers at the Virginia Hereford fall bonanza in 2014, when I was twelve years old.

Coastal Cattle started out as a way for our farm to breed and raise show cattle. My sister and I loved showing our calves. But being in Virginia Beach, there are not too many opportunities to show cattle without traveling many hours for each show, so our ideas of what we wanted to do with our herd changed. The area where I live is rural, but we are surrounded by the city, over 400,000 people within a 50 mile radius of my farm, and all of them need to eat. So we decided to start direct marketing our beef. Pasture to Plate is our slogan and people seem to really like knowing where their food is coming from.

Those first five heifers have expanded to over forty head. I am out there daily with my cows, checking on them and making sure they are happy and healthy. I have named them all, and they seem to know me. They are beautiful, kind-hearted animals, and I will always have Herefords in my life.

Minis: Just a Smaller Package When thinking of the high points of the Hereford breed we think of animals who have proven to be hardy animals, are feed efficient, produce high quality beef, adapt to their environment and are sound animals with a superior disposition. Miniature Herefords are no different. Because of the size and ease of handling, miniature Herefords appeal to many of the various farm settings of today.

We are Tim and Debbie Bryan from Broadway, Virginia. We started out in the miniature Hereford business over fourteen years ago.

Some of the reasons we find people coming to us for miniatures is because the cattle require less acreage, require less food, and are an excellent beef option for the eating habits and size of today’s families.

They also maintain a better freezer shelf life due to a smaller finished product. Miniature Herefords have the same qualities and traits of their full size counterpart and a breeder is able to trace their pedigrees back to the early Hereford cows within the breed.

From the show perspective, there are many miniature Hereford shows throughout the United States. We have three children who are involved with the Virginia Junior Hereford Association and they enjoy showing their miniature Herefords. We have traveled to and competed in the miniature Hereford shows at North American International Livestock Expo in Louisville, Kentucky and Ohio Beef Expo in Columbus, Ohio to name a few. Typical number of entries at NAILE are 70-80 head. We have also travelled to Denver to the National Western Stock Show to take in the miniature Hereford show.

That show alone has grown so much that the miniatures are the third largest breed to exhibit and show there. Our oldest daughter, Rachel, recalls when she attended her first JNHE in Harrisburg, PA. She brought and showed the only miniature Hereford heifer at the Expo.

It was intimidating for her to be at her first national show and around so many other older juniors, however, having her mini there helped build her confidence. Allison enjoys showing the miniatures as well, even when there are no classes specifically for them, like at our local county fair. She likes how many of the smaller framed Herefords get Page 56

the attention of people and seeing them take pictures of her minis.

It has worked well for our children to start out showing miniature Hereford cattle. It seems to be a nice stepping stone, starting with a less intimidating, smaller statured animal and watch their young confidence grow. The Perfect Hereford Bull The Virginia Hereford Association Bull Development Program had a humble beginning in the parking lot of Culpeper Agriculture Enterprise. The Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association sale had just concluded and not a single bid was offered for the Hereford bulls that were in the sale that day. As the consignors and other interested Hereford breeders stood in the parking lot bewildered over what had happened a different direction began to unfold. After a brief period of trying to place blame for what just happened, the group decided action needed to be taken in an entirely different direction.

So, the Bull Development Program (BDP) was born. The first notion of the group was to create the perfect Hereford bull. The group agreed to set a standard for every data point, establish required Expected Progeny Differences (EPD’s), find an outside source to evaluate the bulls and feed the bulls out as inexpensively as possible.

Contact was made with the Virginia Department of Agriculture to participate in the Virginia Finest Program for an outside source to evaluate the bulls. A feed lot was located in Rapidan to feed the bulls as cheaply as possible. There was a lot of excitement the day the first test began, all knew the perfect Hereford bull would be found.

When the test was completed the results were far from what was expected. Very few bulls met all the requirements and few bulls were eligible to sell. What became clear was there wasn’t a sire and dam in the entire Hereford data base that could be mated and meet the expectations that had been developed.

So back to the drawing board. What needed to happen? Rather than create the perfect Hereford bull overnight, bulls needed to be developed. First everyone realized that to create the desired bull the dam had to be capable of providing her 50% of the performance. As a result of this notion Sid Rogers began to have much of the early success having acquired and using much of the Felton herd in his 2018-2020 VHA Directory

program. Felton had a long history of breeding for performance.

The program learned there was not a perfect EPD set that fit every program. So rather than a required EPD set, the breeder and ultimately the market established the EPD limits. The same principal was applied to ultrasound. Rather than requiring a number for rib eye area or intramuscular fat, ultrasound measurements were taken, but the breeder and ultimately the market would make the judgement of what ultrasound data was desirable.

Then another challenge occurred. Bulls in the feedlot were coming home after the test being more aggressive than breeders expected of their bulls. In addition to temperament some health issues were being experienced. So, rather than feed bulls as cheaply as possible in a feedlot, a feed program more in tune with the way bulls were handled at home was needed. A search for that environment was successful when Bud Shaver was found at Weyers Cave to feed the bulls. The health program has continued to be updated as better immunization programs have been recommended by Veterinarians.

Bud Shaver continues to be the choice to feed the bulls.

One of the most significant marketing programs for the bulls happened when the Beef Expo management asked the Virginia Hereford Association for assistance locating commercial cattle for the Beef Expo sale. Don Richardson and Bob Schaffer jumped on the opportunity to showcase Baldie heifers at the Beef Expo and to sell them together with Bull Development Program (BDP) bulls.

Don Richardson spent countless days and many miles locating quality Baldie heifers to sell at the Beef Expo. The most significant contribution to the Baldies was from long time Hereford breeder Alton Willingham. Alton had begun breeding his Herefords to an Angus bull resulting in super Baldies. The 20 or more Baldies that Alton provided were the core of the Baldie consignments. The concept of providing quality Baldies alongside BDP bulls remains one of the most positive aspects of marketing Hereford bulls. However, Alton Willingham passed away and finding a replacement for those top-quality Baldies has been a challenge. Recently a few Baldies have begun to be consigned to the sales and more are encouraged to be a Page 62

part of this program. Finding a source of 20 or more Baldie heifers remains a goal.

Recently a video has been produced about the Bull Development Program and distribution of that video is underway. This idea of providing visual evidence of the BDP will encourage customers to consider a Hereford bull.

From the beginning Bob Schaffer has been the computer guru keeping all the data for the BDP. Without his nights of pouring over the data to create the reports the program could not have survived.

As changes have been made to the program from the beginning there are a number of things that have not changed. Even though Bull temperament is seldom an issue, temperament remains the one crucial criteria. The Virginia Finest Evaluation of the bulls remains another key component that has been a part of the program from the beginning. The Virginia Finest Evaluation includes a muscle score, soundness score and an overall quality score. Since the beginning weaning weight, yearling weight, scrotal circumference and test gain ratios are the core targets that bulls must meet to be considered graduates of the program.

The original goal of creating the perfect Hereford bull remains a goal of the program. Over the years many commercial as well as purebred breeders have come to benefit from the efforts that have been made to perfect the Hereford bull. Maybe the next article that is written about the Bull Development program will be announcing that the perfect Hereford bull has been found. Until then, the goals of the BDP will remain to improve the Hereford bulls in the marketplace.

Women Changing the Face of Farming: Spotlight on Women Hereford Farmers in Virginia

According to the United States Department of Agriculture women account for 32 percent of Virginia farmers, that is 21,622 women farmers in Virginia. Women in Farming has tripled in the past three decades. This is partially due to the fact that not until 2002 did the U.S. Department of Agriculture allow for more than one principal operator to be accounted for in the operation of the farm. This change in method of data collection, allowed more women to claim the status of farmer. According to research women see farming differently than their male counterparts. Many women see farming as a “mission and a passion”. Many women-run operations have an educational component and are more diversified. Women have proven to be good at developing networks with other women farmers; sharing their experiences and what has proven successful for them. Women take an active interest in the environment, health, nutrition, and connecting the farm with the community (Helmer, 2016).

I am privileged to know some very innovative, hard working women in the Virginia Hereford Association. I am going to introduce you to just a few of the outstanding women in the organization who, along with their husbands, take a very active role in the day-to-day operations of their Hereford farms. I asked each lady to answer the following questions: Give a brief history of your farm. How are you involved in the daily operation?

What do you admire about the Hereford breed? and How do you feel we, as women, have promoted and advanced the breed?

Introducing Jackie Koontz from Oak Creek Farm. A brief history of the farm: “Oak Creek farm is a homestead that Billy and I created from raw land that we found and fell in love with in 2003. We built the shop and fences, then worked on the house. Soon after, the main barn was built and we moved in the Fall of 2004. We both worked off the farm as we grew the herd until 2010 when I started working on the farm full time and took over all the daily operations.

How are you involved in the daily operation? “My daily involvement includes feeding, calving, vet work, fencing, making hay, making decisions on breeding, training, halter breaking, washing, clipping, etc. Pretty much

everything.”

What do you admire about the Hereford breed? “I think one of things I love most about the Herefords is they are easy. Easy to feed, easy to move, easy to calve (mostly).”

How do you feel we, as women, have promoted and advanced the breed? “I think we have taken a more active role in the day-to-day operations of our farms and often we are the ones that make the decisions that help our herds grow and improve.” Jackie and Billy also open their farm up to the public, offering a wedding venue. They share their farm and love of farming.

Couples have wedding pictures taken on the farm, even with the cattle.

When asked about the wedding venue Jackie replied “Oh yeah!! I totally forgot about that! We really have educated a whole new demographic (over 90% of our clients are from the city and have never had contact with a farm) to the benefits of the Hereford breed and farming in general! Most couples and their guests are amazed at how “calm” the cows are. I just laugh and tell them, “Well, yeah, they’re Herefords!”

Introducing Melissa Harrison and daughter Jessica. Melissa’s response to my questions were as follows: “We (she and husband Douglas) own and operate Meadow Ridge Farms in Broadway Virginia. It is a 180-acre farm and we have about 150 registered Herefords. The Hereford breed is by far the most docile breed in my opinion. We participate in the Virginia Hereford bull test and both sales each year. Jessica likes showing her heifers at all the shows. She is building her herd up from all the heifers she has shown. We have a spring and fall herd. Women have become a large part of the farming industry.” Melissa helps manage and operate all aspects of the farm from buying to field work. When I asked Jessica what she likes about Hereford farming and showing she replied “My favorite part about showing cattle is the people I’ve met, the places it’s taken me, and the bond I get to create with my calf.”

Farm history “My dad was not from a farm family. He got his start as a teenager with two dairy heifers that were given as payment for debt to his father for work in his coal and oil hauling business in the mid-fifties. From that, he built his dairy herd, constructed a milking parlor, and was renting the farm before graduating high school. He went on to be the first from our area to receive the American Farmer Degree. He worked more than full time, started college, got married and started raising a family and was able to buy the farm in 1973. He grew the farm and branched out to Angus beef cattle cow/calf operation and crop farming. I was four when we moved to the farm. I can only ever remember living there. My dad’s passion for the land and animals was immediately an inherited trait for me.

My dad purchased Hereford steers for me to market and show throughout high school, but it wasn’t until I started farming the farm in 2008 that we made a switch to Hereford cattle.”

How are you involved in the daily operation? “I’ve been very fortunate in my life to be raised on this farm and learn all aspects of the farm. My dad taught me to feed, vaccinate, deliver calves, and treat sick animals as well as run equipment to harvest our crops and to be a steward of the land. My goal is to choose and raise the best animals that exhibit the highest quality traits. The Hereford breed is far ahead with the genetic advancements and helps breeders to make the best decisions. It remains to be the greatest joy of my life to run this farm and be surrounded by the life and growth and challenges that livestock and the land brings.”

What do you admire about the Hereford breed? “I most admire the disposition and efficiency of the Hereford breed. The cows and bulls are the gentlest in the industry while working the hardest.”

How do you feel we, as women, have promoted and advanced the breed?

“I think women have made great contributions to the breed by being extensively involved in daily operations and bringing a different philosophy to the farm. I know that I am very emotionally engaged in the farm and my animals. I farm 130 acres and have 50 Hereford cows. I love every single animal and every inch of the land. I work hard and I make business decisions, but as a woman I also react with compassion. It’s who I am and I truly believe it’s what makes me successful.”

Introducing Diane Wilson from Quail Hollow Farm A brief history of your farm “Quail Hollow Farm is situated in Rixeyville, Virginia. I utilize Artificial Insemination in my breeding program and breed to the best Herford sires in the country with pedigrees full of national show champions. I focus on developing strong genetics and rely on EPD sire matching per each individual cow. My show calves compete at the local and national level. They can go from the show ring to the pasture and become a cow with longevity and lifetime productivity.”

How are you involved in the daily operation? “I manage all day to day activities. This includes all aspects of my herd welfare: pasture maintenance, nutrition, training, showing, record keeping, and selling. I exhibit a very hands-on style and my calves are handled from the day they are born. I promote a very symbiotic relationship with my herd by building ultimate trust and respect.”

What do you admire about the Hereford breed “Herefords show a keen understanding of necessity in everything that is required. Through patience and shared emotional understanding, as a woman, I do not feel threatened or uncomfortable in my daily activities with my cows. From daily feeding, grooming, management, and calving, I have been able to build a boundless relationship with my entire herd.”

How do you feel we as women have promoted and advanced the breed?

“My involvement with the Hereford breed is far-reaching. While attending national Hereford shows and events, I have been able to network with other Hereford breeders and encompass both the successes and failures of the Hereford breed, thus learning how to better the breed. It’s the extra special attention that often sets women cattle farmers apart. This breed wears their emotions on their sleeve and women are very attentive to these changes.

My love for Herefords is a part of who I am and my true passion in life.”

With a passion and love for the breed and a mission to produce a quality herd, women bring a unique, creative aspect to farming. These women are not afraid to get their hands dirty or learn all aspects of running a farm operation. They are open to learning new roles and have a desire to teach others about the farm and land. With big hearts and a faith that can

move a mountain, women strive to be the best they can be, and create a atmosphere on the farm that is genuine and welcoming to all.

Virginia Hereford Association Fall Round Up Show

The Virginia Hereford Association was formed in 1968 by Hereford breeders throughout Virginia with a great deal of support from the American Hereford Association. Fifty years later we are an organization with over 80 members throughout Virginia and neighboring states. The bylaws of the Association state that the purpose of the organization is “to promote the breeding of better Hereford cattle in Virginia and to serve the best interests of those engaged in the Hereford business�.

One of the avenues for the VHA to achieve its purpose was to create The Mid-Atlantic Fall Round-Up in November 2007.

This event was created by the Virginia Hereford Association to provide an opportunity for youth to show their Hereford Cattle in a breed association event. Since its inception in late 2006, the event has had exhibitors from Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. This event has been a one day event held in conjunction with the Virginia Hereford Association Annual Fall Sale.

In 2016, to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of this event, the Virginia Hereford Association Board of Directors authorized the Fall Round-Up to be expanded to two days, holding the show on a separate weekend from the VHA Annual Fall Sale.

In 2016 and 2017 the Mid-Atlantic Fall Round-Up was held on the third weekend in October at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Saturday activities include the Mid-Atlantic Hereford Junior Round-Up Show in the morning and followed in the afternoon with the Mid-Atlantic Open Hereford Show for all age exhibitors. On Sunday morning, the Eastern Sates Jackpot Shows, consisting of two shows, are held concurrently in separate rings.

The continued success of the Mid- Atlantic Fall Round-Up has generated the funds to start a Junior Scholarship Fund for post high school education for VHA Juniors.

The Virginia Hereford Association is honored to have the opportunity to provide this Youth oriented weekend for the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond and we hope families will continue to look forward to this event each fall.
