EY North teams advise on deals worth £7.2bn in first half of 2026

company, Axis CLC Group, supporting a competitive private equity process.

There was also significant deals activity linked to companies in the transport and infrastructure sectors during H1 2026, including ITP Aero’s acquisition of Aero Norway, a provider of aircraft engine MRO services.

EY teams based across the firm’s Manchester and Leeds offices acted on 17 transactions worth a total of £7.2bn in the first half of 2026.

Among the largest transactions was British investor, Rosebank Industries’ £2.25bn acquisition of US-based industrial businesses CPM and MW Components.

The team also advised engineering business ISQ on the sale of the Energia Group – a renewable energy and technology company – to investment firm, Ardian.

Other major transactions included the sale of Driven Brands Holdings’ IMO Car Wash Group to Franchise Equity Partners, in a deal worth £350m, and TowerBrook Capital Partners’ disposal of Austrocel Hallein – an integrated biorefinery – to sustainable manufacturing company, Oji Holdings Corporation.

EY teams in the North also advised the shareholders of PAM Healthcare on the company’s sale to Optima

Health PLC - a transaction worth £100m.

Consumer, media and technology deals were also prominent in the first half of 2026. Specialist media company, Future PLC acquired online lifestyle magazine, SheerLuxe in a deal worth £40m, with potential to rise to £80m through earn-out incentives, while IT services company, UBDS Group was acquired by private equity firm LDC. EY also advised homeware brands company, Portmeirion Group PLC, which completed a new five-year £36 million asset-based lending facility, replacing its prior financing arrangement.

The team also acted as sole lead financial adviser to fire safety and electrical services company, Fieldway Group on its sale to property maintenance and compliance services

Other transactions included Tatton Services Limited’s development loan for the financing of Tatton Motorway Services, and Severn Trent PLC’s acquisition of Water Tight Management.

Watson Batty Architects celebrate major milestone Watson Batty Architects i s ce l e b ra t i n g i t s 5 0 t h anniversary after a strong y ea r - en d p er fo r m a n ce , finishing 19% ahead of target.

Despite ongoing economic challenges, the Leeds and Loughborough-based practice ended the financial year with turnover of £3.72 million — just over £350,000 higher than last year.

The practice, which began a leadership transition earlier this year, credits much of its success to four core sectors, each supported by specialist teams.

The combined living sector generated a strong pipeline, including the practice’s first high-volume student residential development in Cambridge, and finished 13% ahead of target. Key contracts include Springfield Vale Care Home if Barnsley for Exemplar Health Care and Spa Gardens 72-home development in County Durham for Wharfedale Homes.

Education represented more than a third of total turnover and 24% ahead of sector target. Key projects included Willowfield SEN School in Hull, Oulton Secondary School in Leeds and a new SEN school in Market Harborough. Watson Batty is well positioned to secure future commissions through the framework, while also pursuing our first Technical Advisor (TA) roles under CF25.

Leisure was Watson Batty’s fastestgrowing sector this financial year, expanding by more than 50%. The practice is highly regarded for

delivering major public sector projects, with recent successes including a new £2.3 million sports hall for Leicester Grammar School Trust and the Uriah Rennie Leisure Centre for Sheffield City Council.

The commercial/industrial sector met its target despite a slower market, supported mainly by ongoing instructions from long-standing clients including Royal Mail and Wm Morrison Supermarkets, alongside new work from the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Justice.

Watson Batty is also appointed to deliver a new commercial and office development for Zuka at One Lakeside in Doncaster.

A royal welcome awaits at Sovereign House The Leeds office of global property consultancy Knight Frank has played a pivotal role in the letting on the top floor of the stunning Grade II Sovereign House in Leeds.

Logical Personnel Solutions have taken the 2,956 sq ft fully fitted suite on a ten-year lease. The rent is £31 per sq ft.

Muse appointed Strategic Regeneration Partner for Castleford

Nationwide placemaker Mu se ha s been appointed

by Wakefield Council as its Strategic Regeneration Partner (SRP) for Castleford, marking a significant step forward in the town’s long-term regeneration ambitions.

Working alongside the council, Muse will help shape and deliver a shared vision for Castleford that builds on the town’s strengths, creates new opportunities for residents and businesses, and brings forward transformational regeneration over the coming years.

Muse is also working with the council as its Strategic Regeneration Partner for Wakefield City Centre, helping to deliver the city’s ambitious masterplan.

Through this new partnership, Muse and Wakefield Council will focus on revitalising Castleford town centre and strengthening connections to the

riverside, while supporting economic growth, attracting investment and creating high-quality places for people to live, work and socialise.

As the largest town in the Wakefield district, Castleford is well positioned for future growth, benefiting from strong transport links across West Yorkshire and the wider North. The town has already secured investment through the UK Government’s Town Deal and Pride in Place programmes, alongside ongoing improvements to the town centre and riverside.

This new partnership will build on that momentum, helping to maximise existing opportunities, accelerate delivery of Castleford’s

long-term ambitions, and create places that respond to local needs while celebrating the town’s strong identity, heritage and sense of community.

The appointment marks the latest addition to Muse’s growing portfolio across Yorkshire and the North East, where it is delivering major regeneration projects in partnership with local authorities and stakeholders, including the Durham Innovation District.

How Marc Burton started his next chapter at Kirklees College Marc Burton is a Kirklees College apprentice who is evidence of the fact that it’s never too late to stop learning.

Having enrolled as an Engineering apprentice in September 2023, Marc has thrived not only at college but also with his employer, Batorer, a precision engineering company based in Cleckheaton. When asked to offer advice to adults who are thinking of retraining and returning to education, he replied: “I think it’s massively important to never stop learning and get re-educated. Having now been through the process myself, I am now living proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks.”

My tutor helped me massively with this.” Kirklees College recently launched a new video titled, ‘Your Next Chapter’, which highlights the meaningful impact of adult education at the college. This includes stories from students and apprentices like Marc, who have retrained as adults after a long time out of education.

HBC completes landmark child health technology centre in Sheffield

H BC Construction Limited ( H BC) has successfully completed work on The Spark – home of the National Centre for Child Health Technology (NCCHT) in Sheffield, with the facility set to become operational later this year.

The flagship project was delivered by HBC in partnership with Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Spanning approximately 43,000 sq ft at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, the £17 million, purpose-built facility brings together global clinical expertise within modern, technology-enabled spaces. It will play a leading role in transforming children’s healthcare for the NHS in the UK and internationally, driving the development of innovative healthcare technologies and supporting their adoption to

improve outcomes for children and young patients.

The building, which will be known as ‘The Spark’, has been completed to exceptional environmental standards, targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating, with sustainability embedded throughout its design and construction.

Funded by Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity the facility represents a major collaborative investment in the future of children’s healthcare in the region.

It will also play a key role in supporting the Government’s long-term ambition to improve healthcare by moving care closer to communities, making greater use of digital technology, and focusing on prevention as well as treatment.

Throughout the construction process, social value has been rooted in the scheme. Last summer, representatives from HBC, Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park, Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity, SYMCA and Sheffield City Council – as well as young people involved in the project – took part in a steel signing ceremony writing their names, visions and hopes for the future of healthcare on the structure.

The achievement follows a firm-wide project led by risk and compliance manager Clare Ashby, who joined Wilkinson Woodward in April 2025 with the primary objective of securing Lexcel accreditation. Drawing on more than 12 years’ experience of obtaining and maintaining the accreditation at previous firms, she worked closely with colleagues across the business to

UKREiiF to launch first overseas event in 2027

The company behind UKREiiF (The UK’s Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum) has announced its first overseas event will be held in Australia.

The event is set to replicate the UKREiiF model for the Australian market; bringing together international and domestic investors, developers, occupiers and the wider built environment to connect them to opportunities within states, cities and towns to drive forward regeneration and economic growth.

It will focus on facilitating conversations around policy whilst connecting global capital to unlock ambitious investment visions across Australia covering all sectors of the built environment – from traditional industries like commercial, residential, transport, infrastructure and retail, to more emerging sectors such as renewable energy, digital infrastructure and defence.

Nathan Spencer, founding director and managing director of UKREiiF, said: “Australia is entering an extraordinary period of growth, and the global players

£1m transformation brings new immersive leisure destination to York building When it’s time to refuel, guests can visit the venue’s café, restaurant and bar, where they’ll find an imaginative drinks menu featuring signature smoking cocktails, rotating cocktails of the month, indulgent milkshakes and magical potion-inspired drinks for younger visitors.

York is set to welcome an exciting new addition to the city centre this winter as The Escapologist opens the doors to its newest immersive venue in November.

The venue is housed in one of York’s historic buildings, formerly The Biltmore on Swinegate.

The venture represents an investment of around £1,000,000 in York’s leisure and hospitality sector, with the transformation supporting local suppliers and the creation of 25 to 30 new jobs. The project forms part of The Escapologist’s continued growth, bringing its popular immersive entertainment concept to a new location and adding to York’s leisure and hospitality scene.

Originally built around 1910, 29 Swinegate sits within York’s Central Historic Core Conservation Area and has served as a WWI military hospital, a 500-seat church, and a popular venue which has retained many of its architectural features.

The Escapologist will be carefully transforming the venue while retaining the character that the building is known and loved for.

The Escapologist York is more than just an escape room venue - guests will be able to solve immersive adventures, enjoy food and drinks and compete in interactive games, all under one roof.

At launch, visitors will be able to choose from three immersive escape room experiences, each offering a completely different adventure.

Space enthusiasts can take on Mission to Mars, adventure lovers can journey through Hadrig’s Forgotten Forest, while mystery fans can climb aboard The Grand Continental Express. Each experience has been designed and built in-house and accommodates groups of up to six players, making them ideal for families, friends, celebrations and team outings.

The venue will also introduce ‘EscaPool’ to York - an original game that combines crazy golf with pool, alongside interactive darts lanes for even more friendly competition.

The room was the highlight of our stay

At the beginning of July, we were lucky enough to be invited to Swinton Park to enjoy an overnight stay, including dinner, bed and breakfast, and access to their award-winning spa.

For our journey to North Yorkshire,

we travelled in the Lexus LBX, which provided the perfect blend of comfort and refinement for the drive. As you arrive at Swinton Park, you’re welcomed through impressive gates with stunning views up towards the estate. Keep an eye out along the approach, as you may spot the deer’s roaming freely across the grounds.

From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. We were greeted warmly by the doormen, who helped with our luggage and immediately made us feel welcome.

While our bags were taken to our room, we headed inside, where the reception team welcomed us with a glass of fizz to enjoy in the Morning Room.

Before settling in, we took some time to explore the ground floor of the hotel. Each room felt more impressive than the last, but our personal favourite was the beautiful Billiard Room. There’s also a stylish bar area where guests can enjoy an extensive selection of wines, cocktails and other drinks. On a sunny day, we highly recommend taking a seat on the lawn, where you can soak up the picturesque views across the estate.

Beyond spa days and treatments, Swinton also offers outdoor wellness experiences in its spa garden, wellness studios and a variety of membership options, making it an attractive spot for both occasional visitors and regular guests.

After a relaxing afternoon, we headed b a c k to t h e h o te l to c h e c k i n to o u r r o o m .

We were also shown the private dining room, which can accommodate up to 20 guests. It’s a stunning space that would be perfect for an intimate celebration or special occasion, offering an instant ‘wow’ factor the moment you step through the door.

An Afternoon at the Spa Our next stop was the Country Club, home to Swinton’s award-winning spa. Within moments of arriving, it was easy to understand why it has earned such an excellent reputation.

We spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool and making the most of the facilities. Guests can enjoy a poolside menu featuring light bites, finger sandwiches, sweet treats, and a selection of hot and cold drinks. The spa facilities are extensive, including a thermal suite, hydrotherapy pool, relaxation rooms, saunas and steam rooms, providing the perfect environment to switch off and unwind.

The Perfect End to Our Stay The following morning, we returned to the spa for a few more hours of relaxation before check-out.

Afterwards, we enjoyed breakfast at Samuel’s Restaurant, where we were fortunate enough to have a table overlooking the estate. Alongside a choice of freshly cooked breakfast options from the menu, there was also a wonderful continental selection of pastries, fresh fruit and other breakfast favourites to enjoy while you wait. It was the perfect setting to enjoy a leisurely breakfast while taking in the beautiful surroundings.

Staying in the Turret Our room was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our stay. We were fortunate enough to stay in the Turret, a unique accommodation spread across three floors and filled with thoughtful touches that made the experience feel really special.

The ground floor featured a spacious lounge area, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring the estate. On the second floor was the beautifully presented bedroom, offering stunning views across the grounds. The top floor you will find an impressive bathroom complete with a freestanding bath, walk-in shower, double sinks and dressing area. The room felt warm, inviting and incredibly comfortable.

Dining at Swinton For dinner, we chose to dine at The Terrace Restaurant. Guests can also choose Samuel’s Restaurant, with

each offering a distinctly different dining experience depending on your preference.

The Terrace perfectly reflected the relaxed style found throughout the estate. After enjoying a pre-dinner drink, we settled in for our meal. As we visited on a Sunday evening, we were able to experience Twilight on the Terrace, where live music created a lovely atmosphere for diners both indoors and outside. One of the standout aspects of dining at Swinton is its commitment to estate-grown produce, much of which is sourced from the estate’s own four-acre Walled Garden.

While we were at dinner, the team prepared our room for the evening, leaving a sleep spray on our pillows as part of the turndown service. It’s these thoughtful details that really set Swinton apart and demonstrate the care that the team puts into every guest’s stay.

Before leaving, we spent some time exploring the grounds. Swinton Estate has far more to offer than many visitors might initially realise.

Alongside the hotel, guests can stay in self-catering cottages or at Swinton Bivouac, while activities range from nature trails and cookery courses to wild swimming and outdoor adventures.

Final Thoughts It’s probably clear by now that we would highly recommend a visit to Swinton Park. Whether you’re looking for a spa day, an overnight escape, or a family break, there’s something here for everyone.

Looking back on our stay, it’s the little touches that stand out the most – the warm welcome, the stunning setting, the thoughtful service and the chance to completely switch off and relax. We had a lovely time at Swinton Park and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it, whether you’re visiting for a spa day, a special occasion or a countryside escape.

Before we even left the estate, we were already planning our next visit.

Beyond the deal: why the best exits start years before sale

“All right twinkle toes, what’s your exit strategy?” So said Tom Arnold’s character Albert Gibson to the all-conquering spy Harry Tasker (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) in the 1994 movie True Lies. It’s a question business owners should be asking themselves too,not just those who have already made the decision to sell up, but all business owners. For leaving it late to draw up a viable exit plan can narrow down the options available which in turn can lead to a less favourable outcome being achieved.

A big decision For many, selling all or part of a business is one of the biggest decisions they will ever make. Sound planning plays a fundamental role in most business successes—it’s what has got you to where you are today along with years, or even decades, of effort and dedication— but for many, the planning only goes so far. For many, it does not extend to exiting. How many? According to a 2019 study by UBS, around half of

business owners surveyed did not have a formal exit strategy in place.

A simple solution: plan early

their businesses that they can neglect longer-term personal plans. And there is no off-the-shelf plan to draw on when the time comes either. That’s because no two entrepreneurs are alike. Key considerations and plans therefore depend largely on what matters most to each individual. This can be a difficult process, and a good starting point is simply identifying what’s personally important to the owner by answering the following questions:

Whereas those looking to carry on working may consider starting another business or becoming an employee for another company.

How much is enough?

Answering the above questions (or at the very least considering them), allows business owners to have a clearer idea of what they want to get out of a sale or other form of exit when the time comes. This helps inform the answer to another key question: how much is enough? Most business owners have a minimum price at which they would sell but three other factors are also key: Liquidity: What are the resources required to fund your desired lifestyle? Do you have other sources of income? Will your spending increase or decrease going forward?

Have you got a cash buffer for unforeseen developments?

Longevity: The length of expected life after selling the business – different for a 40-year-old than a 70-year-old.

Legacy – What you would like to leave behind for your loved ones?

This can mean quite different things for different people.

Answers can vary depending on the aims identified in the presale phase. Retirement and travel require higher sale proceeds than if going into employment for another company, for example.

True, the calculations can be quite technical—essentially determining the net present value of future family spending—but the results can provide a degree of clarity which would otherwise not have been possible. And while the results may show a shortfall between the attainable sale value and the desired amount, they could also do the opposite, allowing owners to realise they are able to sell sooner than they expected.

Knight Frank instructed to market the iconic Rooms

The Leeds office of the global property consultancy Knight Frank has been appointed to market the unique Rooms in the vibrant Calls area of the city.

The Rooms, once a much-loved bar and night club in the heart of Leeds, has been transformed into a contemporary and stylish office building.

The refurbishment kept much of the building’s original iconic industrial features and exposed brick walls to transform

Historic Leeds watermill to reopen as museum, pub and cafe Grade II listed site on the canal at Stourton, closed since 2024, begins a 12-month community restoration with the public invited to shape what it becomes Thwaite Mills, one of the bestpreserved working watermills in Britain, has been taken over by four new owners who will restore it and reopen it as a working museum with a pub, cafe and canal-side beer garden.

Will Habergham, Terry George, Michael Rothwell and Kirk Allen have taken ownership of the Grade II listed site at Stourton, Leeds, and will begin a full restoration this week, more than two years after the mill closed to the public in April 2024.

The work is expected to take around 12 months and will be carried out alongside volunteers from Friends of Thwaite Mills, the supporters’ group the new owners are relaunching as part of the project. No reopening date has been set.

Early plans include reopening the mill as a working museum, a pub and cafe with canal-side seating, and fully landscaped grounds free for walkers, runners and dog walkers to use. A programme of free family events is planned, and the owners are exploring the return of the craft fairs and car boot sales the site was once known for. Longer term, they hope to add weddings, small music events and a beer garden.

“Thwaite Mills was saved by its community once before, and it’ll be brought back by its community now,” said Will Habergham, director of Thwaite Mills. “We’re not going to disappear for a year and come back with a ribbon to cut. We want people watching it happen, turning up, and telling us what they want this place to be.”

Built between 1823 and 1825, Thwaite Mills worked first as a flax mill and later produced whiting and paint, operating commercially until 1975, when a broken weir threatened its future. Local volunteers stepped in to save it the following year, and it opened as a museum in 1990, welcoming visitors until it closed in April 2024.

The relaunched Friends of Thwaite Mills is open to anyone, including former members of the original Thwaite Mills Society. Members will receive regular updates, be invited to volunteer days and have a direct hand in shaping the mill’s next chapter.

The restoration will be documented as it happens through a social media diary rather than held back for a single announcement.

This edition,we caught up with GemmaWright,managing director sales & distribution at Reward Funding,a UK alternative finance provider established in 2010 and headquartered in Leeds. Reward offers asset-secured lending solutions to SMEs across the UK. Gemma joined Reward as commercial director in 2017 with the responsibility of building and running the operations team across the Leeds and Manchester offices and has played a key role in overseeing the continued growth of the business.

With over 20 years’ experience in financial services with RBS, Gemma’s background was originally in operations before a passion for driving innovation and change led her to move into more strategic roles. Gemma shares her journey so far with us:

“Even before I was born, my dad had grand plans for me to play cricket for Yorkshire - making sure my poor mum headed back to Yorkshire to give birth despite living in Humberside as it was at the time so I could have my ‘Yorkshire passport’,” Gemma explained. “Needless to say, that dream didn’t happen.”

Her own dream was to be a meteorologist - or more accurately,

a weather presenter on TV. “I genuinely can't remember when or why it fell away but I think it was around the time I realised I loved languages more than science!

“Because of my passion for foreign languages, I decided to study a combined languages degree at Hull University. Essentially a degree in French, German and Spanish across four years, it involved me studying at university in the UK alongside a period abroad, where I spent most of my time working as an English teaching assistant at a high school in La Rochelle, France.”

Gemma also spent a summer studying at a language school linked to Salamanca University in central Spain, as well as completing an internship in the export department of a trouser manufacturer in Rothenburg, Germany.

“I loved my degree,” she explained, “because it fulfilled my two passions, speaking languages and travelling.

Hull was also a fantastic university city, where I had lots of fun and made friends for life.”

Growing up, Gemma had the usual part-time waitressing jobs and spent her summers au-pairing in Europe. Her first job post university was working for HSBC in their personal banking call centre. “I went there with a purpose,” she said, “to save enough money to go travelling. So, after nine months, I handed in my notice and went straight to Trailfinders to buy a round-theworld plane ticket!”

Returning home after travelling the world for 12 months, Gemma joined a factoring company in Leeds, Euro Sales Finance. “Perhaps my time at HSBC gave me a thirst for finance,” she explained, “but I think it was more that Euro Sales had offices in France and Germany, so I saw it as an avenue

to return to working abroad. What ultimately happened, though, was I got the bug for working in finance, or more specifically for working with businesses and SMEs. I quickly realised that what I enjoyed most wasn’t necessarily finance itself, but getting under the skin of businesses, meeting the owners and hearing their stories. I walked their factory floors to see how everything worked, understood their ambitions and helped them achieve their goals. Twenty-six years later,

that’s still the part of my job I enjoy the most.”

It’s coming up to nine years since Gemma joined Reward following 18 years working at Royal Bank of Scotland. “I was becoming increasingly frustrated with the automation in the banking sector,” she explained, “and lack of appetite to lend to businesses that their algorithms don’t like. I had a huge amount of lending experience at that

Just in one week for example, I’ve delivered external training with a professional broadcaster, toured a prospective client’s operation, debated strategic initiatives in our board meeting, sat on credit committees and deal clinics, hosted an introducer event on our sun-drenched terrace and even found time to celebrate a colleagues milestone birthday with lunch with the team. No two days are ever the same!”

Reward is at an exciting stage in its journey, Gemma explains: “We’ve invested heavily in our funding structure, systems and people over the last few years and I’m excited to help shape the next chapter. So what advice would Gemma offer to her younger self? “I would say don’t worry about having all the answers.

Whitby whaling ships set sail

Historic landmark no w taken down – with metallic replacement to be installed in 2027 The landmark that has been part of Yorkshire’s tourism fame for more than 60 years has been taken down to be replaced by a metal alloy next year.

It was the last of several whalebone arches that used to exist in the Whitby area, all lost to weather erosion.

The deteriorating 19ft high Whitby Whalebones arch was removed on September 1, with bronze moulds now to be taken.

From its prime site at West Cliff

opposite the abbey and cheek-byjowl with the site of the bronze Captain Cook statue, the demise of the real jawbones is the footnote of a whaling history that had brought great riches to the town.

But underneath the arches lies a controversy about the bones, the cost of replacement and the semi-submerged history of an industry that brutalised the most curious, non-aggressive of the oceans’ largest mammals.

The original jawbones belonged to a creature caught not by Whitby’s highly-productive whaling fleet but

by Norway and erected in 1964 – a whale’s tale away from two centuries since the demise of the harpoon hunters from below the abbey. The

current arch was donated and put up in 2002, thanks to Alaska.

The £70,000 bronze “whalebones” will be saltwater and rust-resistant, and an acknowledgement of natureconservation times, even if the new substance is using up earth minerals.

Whalebones – more specifically whale jawbones, were common sites at locations including West Cliff, Pannett Park, Sleights Hill and alongside the abbey. Several bones were even used as structures for a shed, as a photograph in Andrew White’s superb A History of Whitby shows.

The processing yards have also been long lost to history but the durability of whalebone was the hard plastic of today – used in stays throughout

The Greenland whale blubber was so valued for the nation’s growing economy that the government placed a bounty on the capture of humanfriendly whales – for street and domestic lighting, lubricant for a large range of light and heavy machinery, oiling scientific instruments, glycerin for cordite and war munitions, as well as use in soaps and candles.

Decades of sea-spray and coastal winters have worn down the structure of the much-photographed bones. It was dismantled in two sections by four men with a crane and placed by ropes onto a lowloader.

But the government bounty ended in 1837 as mineral oils became widely used, quickly ending the profitability of whaling.

The choice of bronze will weather naturally and change hue but will still be the focal point for thousands of visitors who look over from the West Cliff towards the Whitby Abbey and the ancient parish church of St Mary’s, which is linked with the Dracula story.

Following their removal and mouldcreation, part of the bones will remain in the town, at Whitby Museum but the rest taken to the University of York.

The blubber was heated or reduced into oil at the town’s great boiler houses – creating a dreaded odour. Some of the boilers were alongside the inner harbour, some on the town outskirts such as Larpool The whale refuse became fertiliser … but creating a perfume that ‘made men pale and weep,’ as detailed in Whitby Lore & Legend by Shaw Jeffrey Whitby streets were lit by gas from the whale oil for a while until cheaper and “cleaner” coal gas was used.

North Yorkshire Council, which controls the site, sought a new set of jawbones, but size, condition and legalities caused waves.

“One of the earliest reports of the sea creature now known as Slippery Sam came in the 1860s, in Scarborough, when a fisherman reported seeing a large sea creature with a long, snake-like body.”

In the 1920s, people also reported seeing in Whitby a large, serpentine creature off the coast - glistening and several yards long.

In years to follow, a fisherman at Filey Bay reported seeing a large sleek creature near the shoreline – and the coastguard spotted a 30ft long sea serpent.

The sightings – and reports by multiple people in the 1960s about a sea serpent near Flamborough Head reignited speculation about ‘Slippery Sam,’ says the book.

“Centred around Flixton and Staxton Hill, the surrounding triangle remains a compelling nexus of werewolf lore and unexplained phenomena,” the author writes.

In the UK, ‘staycationing’ has always been popular because, let’s face it, the UK is a great place for a holiday, and if you get a summer like we’re having in 2026, why bother going abroad and struggling with baggage and airport and ferry queues. It’s also why campervan sales are booming.

We’ve timed things perfectly because we’ve just had a Citroen Holidays when it was sunny but not overly hot. This is Citroen’s campervan version of the Citroen Dispatch van which has a cracking reputation for racking-up the miles and being a serious workhorse.

The same vehicle is used for the Citroen SpaceTourer MPV. In a nutshell, the Holidays is an easy-to-drive vehicle with a pop-up roof, a four-berth sleeping arrangement, kitchen, swivelling front seats, and an outdoor shower setup which we suspect will be used mainly for rinsing off a muddy dog.

There was just the two of us and I reckon four adults might be a bit of a squeeze, but for a family with two early teenage kids, it’d be fine. The kids could sleep ‘upstairs’ in the pop-up section (1.2m x 1.95m). It’s a bit of a fiddle, but I suspect once you’ve raised and lowered the roof a few times, you’ll get the hang of it. Undo the locking mechanism and then push…a pair of gas struts make it easy to lift.

The main double bed (1.15m x 1.9m) is a case of juggling the rear seats and adding additional cushions.

The kitchen is a neat bit of kit which can be unmounted

and placed outside for some al fresco dining using the attachable table. You get a twoburner gas stove, sink, running water and a 16-litre fridge.

Heating can be programmed and of course, as it’s a van, you’ve got air con. You get plenty of storage space and there’s a removeable toilet.

Water comes from a 10-litre tank…the waste water tank is the same size.

The ambient lighting provides a nice glow at night and, once you swivel the front two seats, there’s a real fun factor to dining in the Citroen Holidays.

On a balmy evening, you can dine with both side sliding doors flung open…don’t attract the wretched midge though.

Okay, you’re never going to have the amount of space and versatility that you’d get with a motorhome, but the beauty of the Citroen Holidays is that it’s easier to use. For example, because it’s van-based, it’ll fit into most car parks which have a height restriction. When visiting a city, it’s simple to park on the roadside.

You can hook-up to mains electricity if you’re on a campsite, but if you are the adventurous, off-grid type, there’s an onboard leisure battery which charges as you drive along using a hybrid

system and there’s a solar panel on the roof which trickle charges the battery. Clever.

The Citroen Holidays is also substantially cheaper than a motorhome and is one of the most cost-effective campervans in the UK, retailing at £56,430 (August ’26). never call the interior plush, but it looks hard wearing and should cope with the sort of knocks a campervan can expect. It’ll age well…something that’s important when the time comes to sell.

Out on the road, the Citroen Holidays (like the Dispatch van) is good to drive. The 2.0 litre

diesel engine offers plenty of grunt and the ride is surprisingly compliant. A lot of campervans do long distance trips…hopping over to the Continent…but this Citroen should eat up the miles without a hiccup. Estimated economy is 38.7mpg, but we d i d b e t te r t h a n t h a t a t j u s t over 40mpg. 0-60mph takes a shade over 10 seconds which is sufficient poke for when joining q u i c ke r r o a d s. To p s p e e d i s 106mph. Everything goes via a smooth 8-gear auto ‘box. There are no mechanical options.

There’s just a single level of trim too, but you get sat nav, 10-inch touchscreen, heated driver’s seat, heated steering wheel,

180-degree parking camera, DAB radio, LED headlights, interior curtains, wireless smartphone charging, and dark tinted rear windows. Plenty of safety kit too.

It’s also worth mentioning that if there are just two of you using the Citroen Holidays, you can remove the rear pair of seats altogether and use the additional space for carrying bikes or bulky equipment.

If you’re looking for a decent option for doing some holiday touring but don’t want to break

the bank, the Citroen Holidays is a great option. You get all of the essentials in a sensibly compact vehicle which can travel and park just about anywhere. Yes, there are more premium campervan products out there plus plenty of motorhomes, but they cost considerably more while still offering much the same as the Citroen Holidays.

And if you’re thinking of joining the campervan crowd, this would be a great place to start.
