As we move further into the year, I continue to be incredibly proud of the momentum we’re building together as an association Each month, I’m reminded that what makes the Black Hills Home Builders Association so strong isn’t just our numbers it’s the collaboration, leadership, and shared commitment to improving our industry and our communities
Recently, several of us had the opportunity to attend the NAHB Area 10 Conference, and I can confidently say it was time well spent Not only did we bring back valuable ideas to strengthen our association’s growth and impact, but it also provided meaningful opportunities for personal and professional development. Engaging with other local and state associations reinforced that while every market is unique, many of our challenges and solutions are shared.
One of the biggest takeaways was the importance of staying connected at every level. Our partnership with the National Association of Home Builders, along with our relationships across Area 10, allows us to both learn from others and contribute our own successes. We’re not just growing we’re helping lead. Identifying ways we can support other associations while continuing to elevate our own has become a key focus moving forward.
Back here at home, I’m especially proud to share the completion of the Parkview Softball Complex bathroom remodel a project made possible through the BHHBA Community Foundation and the incredible support of our members and partners It was an honor to serve as the general contractor on this project and work alongside such dedicated businesses and volunteers This effort is a perfect example of what can happen when our industry comes together with a shared purpose: to give back and make a lasting impact in our community
As we highlighted in our last newsletter, our focus this year remains clear growth, advocacy, workforce development, and meaningful community engagement. We’re already seeing progress in each of these areas, and I’m excited about what’s ahead.

As the founder of Black Hills Business Results LLC and a Certified EOS Implementer with EOS Worldwide, Shasta has made it her mission to help business owners get more of what they want from their businesses Through a proven system of simple, practical
tools known as the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), she helps leaders simplify, clarify, and take control of their companies.

Shasta’s story begins right here in the Black Hills Raised in a family of entrepreneurs, she grew up watching how business ownership can shape not only a livelihood, but an entire way of life

Life Beyond the Business
Outside of her work, Shasta continues to invest in her community and her passions She serves on the boards of two local nonprofits, plays percussion on her church’s worship team, and has recently started learning the cello. She enjoys camping with her husband, kids, grandkids, and their dog, and has developed a love for geocaching She also has a deep appreciation for historic architecture.
“I absolutely geek out over historic buildings I love imagining the experiences people had and the memories they made in those spaces, especially as they were being built.”
In addition, she enjoys coaching young athletes in baseball, where she helps teach not only the fundamentals of the game, but also important life lessons about humility, growth, and perseverance
Building a Better Future Together
At its core, Shasta’s work is about meaningful and lasting change It is not
about quick fixes, but about creating businesses that truly work for the people who run them.
Her message to fellow members is clear. You do not have to do it alone, and you do not have to settle for a business that runs you.
With the right tools, the right mindset, and the support of a strong community, it is possible to build something better for your business, your team, and your life.

As I reflect on the past few months, I continue to feel energized by the traction we’re gaining as an association. One of the areas I’m especially excited about is the expansion of our education and workforce efforts. We are proud to officially welcome Tom Chandler with Weather-Tite Roofing as our training partner. This partnership allows us to bring valuable certifications and hands-on learning opportunities directly to our members—continuing to elevate the professionalism and expertise within our industry.
On the advocacy front, I remain committed to strengthening my own knowledge and leadership so that I can effectively stand up for our builders across the Black Hills. Whether it’s working alongside local government officials, engaging with legislators, or ensuring our voice is present at key decision-making tables, we are focused on protecting and advancing the housing industry in our region. Being proactive and present matters.
I’m also incredibly proud of the way we are showing up in our communities. Through our foundation and member-led projects, we are making a tangible difference, demonstrating the heart behind our industry and the power of coming together to serve others. These efforts not only give back—they build trust and strengthen the reputation of our members across the Black Hills.
And finally, I want to recognize our team. Our staff is energized, focused, and fully committed to carrying our mission forward. Their passion, paired with the dedication of our volunteer leaders and members, is what continues to push us to new levels.

A $35,000 donation was recently presented to the Black Hills Home Builders Association Community Foundation, supporting its ongoing efforts to strengthen and invest in the local community
Samy Carlin, who serves on the foundation’s Board of Directors, shared insight into how the opportunity came together, noting that when the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines announced a grant program available for South Dakota, it was clear this was a meaningful way to give back
The contribution will directly support several impactful initiatives led by the foundation, including homebuilding projects, the development of public restroom facilities, and workforce development programs through the Black Hills Home Builders Association Additional communityfocused projects will also benefit from the funding
Through partnerships like this, continued investment in housing, infrastructure, and workforce development helps create lasting opportunities and strengthens the future of the Black Hills region

Attending the NAHB orientation in Washington, D.C. gave me a better understanding of how our local work in the Black Hills connects to the national home building industry. It was really interesting to see how national advocacy, resources, and member services all tie back into what we do day to day for our members.
One of my biggest takeaways was how well the national and local associations work together, and how much support we can bring back and use locally especially around workforce development and industry education. I also came back with some good ideas for connecting more with schools and promoting careers in the trades.
This was also my first time in D.C., which made the whole experience even more impactful for me both personally and professionally. It was really cool to finally see everything in person that I’ve only ever heard about!!!
I also really enjoyed getting to experience the trip with our VP, Tyler Tribby. It was great to learn alongside him and have someone to talk through everything with along the way.
Overall, it was a great experience that gave me new ideas, a better perspective on the industry, and a reminder of how important our work is for members and the future workforce.
